Serge BlennerLa Vogue ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $8.99
A really cool keyboard set from Serge Blenner – issued during the glory days of the German Sky Records label, but with a vibe that's a bit different than most of their other releases! Blenner works on an assortment of keyboard and electronic sources – but with a sound that's maybe more Sheffield than Hamburg, especially as there's some great use of darkness and distortion in the mix – less clean electronics than some of his Sky contemporaries, which creates a very cool, moody sound throughout! The album has eight instrumental tracks – each a numbered "Phrase" by Serge. CD

Serge BlennerMagazin Frivole ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $8.99
Overlooked electronic genius from Serge Blenner – an artist whose name and title might sound a bit French, but who recorded this set in the Hamburg underground at the start of the 80s! The work here is a nice bridge between earlier Sky Records modes and the rising tide of the German new wave – especially those corners of that scene that have gotten a lot of attention in the newly-titled cold wave generation of the time! The tunes are all instrumental, and nice and spare – with maybe elements that hearken back to the analogue electronics of very early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire – tuneful and song-based, but still really moody and dark too. Titles include "Derivatif", "Magazin Frivole", "Envoutement", "A L'Ouest", and "Polyphase". CD

OttoOver The Top Orchester ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
A cool little duo – one with a sound that hearkens back to the best German electronic styles of the early 80s – which maybe you might have guessed from their retro look, and the Farfisa organ on the cover! Despite their claim of being an "over the top orchester", the sound is very spare and minimal throughout – usually just drum machine beats and these great retro keyboard elements – mostly warm and analogue-sounding, with elements that remind us of some of the German Sky Records material reissued by the Bureau B label over the years – which makes the company a great home to this contemporary group. Songs are spare instrumentals, tuneful yet moody – almost in the Test Card EP style of Young Marble Giants. Titles include "Auto Disco", "Feuer Spucken", "Morgen Danach", "LKS 98", "Kanapee Pop", "Huch Zu Ross", and "Auf Dem Roten Teppich". CD

RoedeliusSelbstportrait – Wahre Liebe ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A beautiful contemporary album that follows the same spirit of the vintage Selbsportrait records by Roedelius – and one that uses the same sort of vintage instrumentation too – given that the master of spare musical space works here on Fender Rhodes, Farfisa, Roland and Korg keyboards! The songs are wonderful – lyrical in a subtle way, and with maybe a slight bit more variation than some of the Ambient work by Brian Eno – although still that similar balance between silence and sound, which is why Roedelius was such a great partner with Eno on a few projects back in the day. Selections vary in length from 36 seconds to 14 minutes – and titles include "Aus Weilter Ferne", "Nahwarme", "Ebenfalls", "Gerne", "Spiel Im Wind", "Geruhsam", and "Im Kreisel". CD

RoedeliusTape Archive Essence 1973 to 1978 ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.98
Rare archival recordings from the legendary Hans Joachim Roedelius – material that's maybe even more creative and experimental than his Sky Records albums of the late 70s! The work here was all recorded on a Revox tape recorder, and has been pulled from the archives for special inclusion in this package – a set that goes all the way back to 1973, and offers up a great preface to some of the more commercially-circulated material we know and love – electronics that sometimes have more of an edge, and also tie Roedelius back to an earlier era of German experimentation. This collection offers the "essence" of the previous 3LP box – some of the best tracks, with titles that include "Bock Auf Rock", "Langmarschieren", "Rokkokko", "Unterwegs", "Skizze 3 Von By This River", "Lied Am Morgen", "Springende Inspiration", and "Nachtens In Forst". Jimi TenorNY Hel Barca ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1990s/Early 2000s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99
A collection of early work from Jimi Tenor – an artist who's maybe known best these days for his spiritual jazz and funk recordings, but one who sounded very different at the time of this material! Jimi issued much of this music on the Warp label back in the 90s – and although there's some funky elements, there's also a fair bit electronic elements too – much more in the old school Warp mode, but evolving in a surprising way over time – particularly on some of the late 90s material, in which Jimi might use larger orchestrations, or bits of reeds – warming things up, and taking directions that would mature much more strongly in the 21st Century. In a way, a lot of these cuts are a nice link with an earlier generation of electronic European experimentation – of the sort the Bureau B label usually reissues – and titles include "Spell", "Tesla", "Year Of The Apocalypse", "Xinotepe Heat", "Take Me Baby", "My Mind", "Natural Cosmic Relief", "A Daughter Of The Snow", "Shore Hotel", "Outta Space", "Unmentionables", and "Rubberdressing". ✨✧ HeldonHeldon 6 – Interface ... CD
Cobra/Bureau B (Germany), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully noisy French album from 1977 – quite unlike anything that most of the world was working on at the time – but maybe at a level that was a preface to darker sounds in the years to come! Heldon might be sometimes grouped with the European prog scene of the 70s, but they've also got a darker vibe here that's very different than the rest – maybe almost hinting at some of the textures and tones of the post-punk years, while also evoking the Italian Cosmic world – but all in a space that's very much their own, coming from the ever-flowing talents of Richard Pinhas on electronics and guitar – with heavy drums from Francois Auger, more electronics from Patrick Gauthier, and some occasional bass from Didier Batard. The title track is a side-long jam that's really mindblowing – and other titles include "Jet Girl", "Les Souccoupes Volantes Vertes", "Le Retour Des Souccoupes Volantes", and "Bal A Fou". CD

✨✧ HeldonStand By ... CD
Egg/Bureau B (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's nothing on standby here – as Heldon are moving at full speed right from the start – soaring away in their trademark blend of heavy percussion and electronics! The album's a bit less noisy than their previous efforts, but no less cosmic overall – as side one features a long suite of tracks that build beautifully from the mini moog of Patrick Gauthier, guitars and electronics of Richard Pinhas, drums of Francois Auger, and bass of Didier Batard – and side two features two shorter, but equally mindblowing tracks! The sound is nicely post-prog – that same direction some German groups were taking at the time, but not yet with a post-punk vibe – and there's a quality to the whole record that's years ahead of its time – at that level that's maybe only made Heldon truly appreciated by later generations outside their native scene. Titles include "Stand By", "Bolero", and "Une Drole De Journee". CD

✨✧ HeldonUn Reve Sans Consequence Speciale ... CD
Cobra/Bureau B (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the headiest music ever made by this legendary French combo of the 70s – long tracks that have plenty of incredible electronics from Richard Pinhas, and plenty of freewheeling moments too! Heldon may have gotten their start in the progressive work, but here they really take off to sonic territory of their own – very burning and intense, and maybe even more avant overall – in a collision of free jazz, electronics, and raw percussion – all still with some rock sensibilities in the mix, but also very free of any generic expectations! The lack of categorization is what sometimes kept these French albums out of the same sort of limelight as German or British work of the time – but it also is what makes them so much more exciting all these many years later. Titles include "Elephanta", "MVC II", "Toward The Red Line", and "Marie Virginie C". CD
