Budos BandBurnt Offering ... LP
Daptone, 2014. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Some of the deepest, heaviest work we've ever heard from the Budos Band – as you might guess from the album's dark title and cover! There's a bit of a heavy metal look to the package, but the sounds within are still the righteous funk we've always loved from Budos – yet are also inflected with a very slight bit of trippy elements this time around – a touch of fuzz on the guitar, or cosmic echoes on the keyboards – which really balance out strongly with the group's bold horns and razor-sharp drums! The slight changes make for a more sinister sound than before, and show that these guys continue to be one of the most forward-thinking funk bands around – never content to just rest on the laurels of their great musicianship, but always leaping ahead with new ideas. Titles include "Shattered Winds", "Black Hills", "Magus Mountain", "Into The Fog", "The Sticks", "Burnt Offering", and "Turn & Burn". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band III (includes bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). ✨✧ Budos BandV ... LP
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Titles include "The Enchanter", "Spider Web (part 1)", "Old Engine Oil", "Veil Of Shadows", "Arcane Rambler", "Valley Of The Damned", and "Rumble From The Void". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band 2 ... LP
Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Budos BandLong In The Tooth (with bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Budos Band may be long in the tooth – 15 years since their first record (!) – but they still sound pretty darn funky and fresh to our ears, and maybe even return here to some of the rawer modes of their first few records! The approach is simple, but fantastic – heavy drums on the bottom and exotic horns on the top – almost as if a hip hop DJ discovered all the best funky tracks from the Ethiopiques series back in the mid 90s, then set about to create a unique brand of instrumentals – all colored with sweet keyboard lines and other great touches! Titles include "Sixth Hammer", "Dusterado", "Silver Stallion", "The Wrangler", "Gun Metal Grey", "Budonian Knight", "Mierda De Toro", and "Snake Hawk". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes die-cut sleeve and embossed insert – with download!)

✨✧ Menahan Street BandMake The Road By Walking ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download.)
