VariousSynthetic Soul & Other Junk – Mixed By Dom Thomas ... LP
Brutal (UK), 2010. Sealed 2LP ... $24.99
Loads of 80s elements here – drum fills, post-punk guitars, keyboard bits, and more – all mixed up superbly from Dom Thomas – with the same sort of B-Music/Finders Keepers style we love in his other projects! There's plenty of bits here that seem familiar, but they're nicely turned up on their ear in Dom's hands – kind of a view back to the early 80s, but through a shifting set of filters that keeps confusing things in a nice way! Titles include "1979 Ludicrous", "Ghetto Sun", "After Midnight", "Electro Benelux", "Disco Patch Pop", "Desert Ode 2010", and "Cavernous Sinus". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, with hype sticker!)

Fela & Africa 70Yellow Fever ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1976/1999. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A really killer 70s album from Fela Kuti – one that serves up a hell of a message, and some great slinky grooves too! "Yellow Fever" is a brutal attack on miscegenation, backed by a funky groove that makes the whole thing fall into place with an amazing riffing sound – bold, powerful, and Afrika 70 at their best! "Na Poi 75" begins with a cool spoken bit – then moves into this pulsating keyboard part which is almost eerily spare, until the rest of Afrika 70 come into the mix and really funk things up! Drums are wonderfully skittish – kind of double-snapping, while the bassline dips nicely below – and the tune ebbs and flows in this really great way. LP, Vinyl record album

Last PoetsLast Poets (Celluloid pressing) ... CD
Celluloid, 1970/1984. Used ... $6.99 8.99
The first album by the second group to call themselves the Last Poets – and as fierce a document of their rich talents as you'll ever find – bursting forth with anger and righteousness at a level as tight as Gil Scott-Heron's first album! The group here is the key second lineup of the ensemble of wordsmiths – comprised of Abiodun Oyewole, Alafia Pudim, and Omar Ben Hassan, plus the percussionist Nilaja – and most cuts feature only spare percussion backing over the spoken protest poetry – delivered with a brutal edge that really sums up the righteous politics of the time. Titles include "Run, N****r", "On The Subway", "When The Revolution Comes", "Jones Comin' Down", "Black Thighs", "N*****s Are Scared Of Revolution", and "Wake Up, N*****s" – all of which should give you a good picture of what's going on with the record! Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really deep dive into the lost legacy of Franklin Boukaka – a singer who really helped revolutionize music in the Congo during the 60s, recording a heck of a lot of great tracks before a brutal murder took him from the planet in the early 70s! At some level, the work here is to Congolese music what some of the more playful township songs were to the South African scene – a new style, but one that also had a really universal sort of appeal – contemporary and catchy, yet still nice and lean, and never overproduced in any sort of European way! There's plenty of numbers here that show that strong 60s Congo love of Afro-Cuban elements – and the 3CD package also features work done with Manu Dibango, and the group Cercul Jazz. Titles include "Pasi Na Komona", "Succes Cercul", "Na Welate", "Dia Bikola", "Honole", "O Nongone Mba Mulema", "Na Ye Na Lisano", "Yanga", "Longwa Na Nzela", "Nitouani Yam Bi", "Awana Divorce Na Bana", and "Les Ecoliers". ✨✧ Black FlagDamaged ... LP
Unicorn/SST, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An unmitigated blast of punk, worthy of setting the stage for the American hard core movement! While punk rock had been firmly established by the time this album came out, no one was prepared for the next level that Black Flag would take things to with this brutal, nihilistic, stripped down assault on the status quo! A classic that will stand up for ages, wit fist in the air anthems like "Rise Above", "Six Pack", "What I See", "TV Party", "Police Story", "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie", "Thirsty & Miserable", "Depression", "Padded Cell", "Damaged I", "Damaged II", "Life Of Pain", "Room 103" and "No More". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s blue label Unicorn/SST pressing with S-9375/9376 matrix. Cover has some light ring & edge wear, mild corner bend.)

✨✧ Masta AceDisposable Arts ... LP
JCOR/M3, 2001. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
There's nothing disposable about this classic album – as the set is one of the greatest comebacks in hip hop, and the start of a fantastic second run for Masta Ace! It's almost as if the MC has a whole new sense of mature majesty – one that really comes through on the classic "Acknowledge", and which holds strong in the company of guests who include Jane Doe, King T, Apocalypse, Strick, Jean Grae, Greg Nice, Rah Digga, and others whose presence only serves to remind us who the leader is! Ace delivers some amazing self-reflection on "Dear Diary" – rhyming about the ups and downs of his career in hip hop with brutal honesty – and other cuts include "Too Long", "Don't Understand", "Hold U", "Enuff" "Last Rights", "Block Episode", "Unfriendly Game", "I Like Dat", "PTA", "No Regrets", and "Something's Wrong". ✨✧ VariousPeople Take Warning – Murder Ballads & Songs Of Disaster 1913 to 1938 (3CD set) ... CD
Tompkins Square, 1910s/1920s/1930s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Amazing music from the depths of the Great Depression, but it's hardly a downer – this is a deeply felt collection of tunes by black & white singers and combos of the 20s & 30s that's cathartic, emotional, and a complete treasure trove! The songs are full of brutal beauty, tragedy, and some dark humor, especially when it gets to the murder ballads – and more than 30 of the 70 songs haven't been reissued before now! This is simply one of the very best sets of archival Americana since the epic CD releases of the Anthology Of American Folk Music. It's really that good! The discs are separated thematically – Man V Machine, Man V Nature, and Man V Man (And Woman, Too) – and titles include "Titanic Blues" by Hi Henry Brown & Charlie Jordan, "The Crash Of The Akron" by Bob Miller, "Wreck Of Old 97" by Skillet Lickers, "The Fatal Wreck Of The Blus" bu Mainer's Mountaineers, "The Story Of The Mighty Mississippi" by Ernest Stoneman, "When The Levee Breaks" by Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie, "The Death Of Floyd Collins" by Vernon Dalhart, "Peddler And His Wife" by Hayes Shepherd, "Frankie" by Dykes Magic City Trio, "Dupree Blues" by Willie Walker. 70 tracks on 3CDs! CD
(Trifold cardboard sleeve edition of the heavy-duty box set on Tompkins Square – pared down artwork, but containing all the great music and a nice booklet, with an intro by a clearly indebted Tom Waits, plus notes on the individual tracks.)

✨✧ Roy BuddStone Killer ... CD
Legend (Italy), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the darkest Roy Budd scores ever – designed to accompany a brutal police film starring Charles Bronson! The main theme has a nice electronic sound that's kind of like the "Mystery Movie" theme from the 70s – then the score moves into some nicely moody regions that feature spare Fender Rhodes riffs underpinned by dark orchestral scoring! Titles include "Under Surveillance", "On The Trail", "Down Uptown", "The Graveyard", "The Chase", and "Assassination". Nice stuff, and one of Budd's best moments from the 70s! CD

✨✧ MekonsCurse Of The Mekons/Fun 90 ... CD
A&M/Collectors Choice, 1990/1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A creative highpoint for The Mekons – even if too few were listening at the time! The greatest curse The Mekons have to deal with is their relative obscurity, outside of underground rock aficionados – and if you don't require the fieriness of their punkier earlier albums, we can't recommend Curse Of The Mekons highly enough. It includes the fierce "Authority" – one of our favorite Mekons songs ever – a that roars and mourns at the same time! The album's a stunner from beginning-to-end, though. Includes "The Curse", "Blue Arse", "Wild & Blue", "Secrets", "Nocturne", "Sorceror", "Brutal", "Waltz" and "100% Song". This CD edition also includes their great A&M EP Fun 90 – with "Makes No Difference", "Sheffield Park", "Having A Party" and "One Horse Town". CD

✨✧ PrinceHitnrun – Phase One ... CD
NPG, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
Prince certainly hit and run with this record – as the set was so secret, we couldn't even announce it until it was released! But the lack of advance fame certainly doesn't hold it back – as the whole thing is one of Prince's strongest efforts in years – a record that echoes lots of his 80s famous funk right at the start, then breaks out into a mode that's a lot more brash and almost brutal at times – as if the purple one's expressing anger and emotion we never would have heard in his music from years back! Everything is very much right on the money – vocals, instruments, and all the rhythms woven together with that magic that Prince first created decades ago – but with a fresher 21st Century spirit that still blows away most of the younger generation he's inspired. Titles include "Hardrocklover", "Fallinlove2nite", "Mr Nelson", "June", "Million $ Show", "Ain't About 2 Stop", and "This Could B Us". CD

✨✧ VariousMuggsy Story – The Real House Sound Of The New York Underground ... CD
BBE (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
New York house from the Muggsy label – an imprint that was an offshoot of the well-known Henry Street Records, but which focused on more stripped-down sounds from the underground! The tunes here all have some great old school touches at the core – like warm keyboards, a funky disco bassline, or other vintage elements – but the execution is decidedly house-heavy, in that skittish style that was burning up the New York clubs in the mid 90s! There's a lot more focus here than you'd get in mainstream dance music, and a lot less commercialism too – and the tracks are wonderful in their ability to sum up a few key essences, and work them into a groove. Titles include "Twist The Knob" by Da Mooch, "Back Jack" by TKC, "Woman Of Angels (Whisky A Go Go mix)" by Brutal Bill Presents The Funkryders, "Do You Know About Love (club)" by Brutal Bill Presents Soul Function, "That's What It Is" by Da Mooch, "You Used To Hold Me (salsa mix)" by Ralphi Rosario, and "And There Ain't (Troopa's deep mix)" by Kenny Dope Presents DBX. Cuneiform, 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A really great setting for the guitar of Mary Halvorson – one that reminds us what a versatile player she's become over the years – an artist whose way of inflecting strings and reaching for new colors really continues to amaze us with each new album! There's a very rhythmic pulse to the record – as Michael Formanek provides bass and Tomas Fujiwara plays drums – with the former also bringing in a bit of electronics, while the latter handles vibes – although both rarely diverge too much from the core, which really allows Halvorson to fly throughout. The album that changed everything for Metallica – catapulting them from patron saints of unrelentingly heavy thrash metal to reluctant (at first, anyway) mainstream superstars! The production is glossier sounding than ever before, and whether that compromised the rawer brutality of their heaviest moments is debatable to this day – but that's countered by the slow-building, incredible songcraft (the shortest one is over 5 minutes long) and all around ambitiously structured material. ✨✧ David Boykin & SebauLast Slave Movie/Which Side Are You On ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the most political projects we've ever heard from saxophonist David Boykin, and one of the most ambitious too – a jazz opera that deals with the recent struggles of black America in the face of increased police brutality – inspired by the tragic deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and others! The piece features vocals – both sung and rhymed, performed by a group that was put together especially for this event – with vocals from Rhonda Gray and Quenna Lene, plus Boykin himself – and rhymes from Manu Wisdom. Bokyin plays fantastic tenor throughout, alongside drums from Josh Ross and bass from Rollo Radford – and the mix of voice with this stripped-down lineup is incredibly powerful, with the best energy of an underground project like this from the 70s. The group also features a bit of turntable work from Abstract Black and some piano from Aliyyah Heatherington – and the whole thing was recorded live in concert, in late 2017. CD
