Max RoachBright Moments ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1987. Very Good ... $6.99
Proof that Max Roach was always experimenting with his music – even in the later years! The album's one of a few 80s efforts to feature Roach's Double Quartet – a group that takes his regular four-piece jazz group and augments it with a string quartet – all in a sound that's almost an extension of modes first begun by Roland Kirk in the 60s! The Kirk reference isn't accidental – as the title track here is a great version of Kirk's "Bright Moments" – one that uses the strings to offset the core jazz work of Roach on drums, Odeon Pope on tenor, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, and Tyrone Brown on electric bass – all in ways that are as creative as they are playful, definitely in a Kirk-styled spirit. Other tunes follow suit – and use the strings to echo Kirk's dream of a black classical music, but also one that's always firmly jazz-based at all times. Titles include "Double Delight", "Hi Fly", "Bright Moments", "Elixir Suite", and "A Tribute To Duke & Mingus". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole, PSI sticker, and is bent a bit at the front panel.)

✨✧ Cecil PayneBright Moments ... LP
Spotlite (UK), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A tasty little session from Cecil – recorded in London, with a swinging soulful sound that's all-American! Part of this has to do with Curtis Fuller, who's joining Payne in the frontline on trombone – giving a nice deep round edge to the whole set. Payne plays flute on a version of Roland Kirk's "Bright Moments", and other tracks include "Equinox", "Solar", and "Speak Low". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a spot of red ink in back at the top right corner.)

✨✧ Larry BrightNew Dimensions ... LP
Selector Series (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sweet fusion set from the Baltimore scene of the late 80s – served up by Larry Bright on keyboards, bass, and drums – and all done with a nice lean vibe and soulful sound throughout! There's guest work on bass, trumpet, and guitar from track to track – and the record has a vibe that's a stripped-down take on mainstream fusion of the time – still very influenced by elements of 80s R&B, but never too polished or commercial – and with some keyboard/rhythm moments that maybe echo 80s action soundtracks as well! Titles include "New Dimensions", "Sonic Image", "Spirit", "Sunbeam", "Heat", and "Generations". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Grover Washington JrSkylarkin' ... LP
Motown, 1980. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet Motown grooving from Grover Washington – a set that has him working with slightly larger backings than his Kudu years, but in a way that still lets his soulful horn stand strongly out front! As always, Washington is a killer talent on the soprano sax – able to inflect the instrument with these soulful twists and turns that he virtually invented at the time, and which so many others have tried to copy over the years. Yet the set also has Grover on a bit of tenor and baritone sax, too – plus some flute – all over arrangements mostly handled by the man himself, with a bit of help from William Eaton. Titles include "Snake Eyes", "Bright Moments", "Easy Loving You", "Love", and "I Can't Help It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has a light trace of a sticker and a light corner bend.)

✨✧ Fat MattressFat Mattress ... LP
Atco, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the better moments of the underground scene on Atlantic at the end of the 60s – a pretty cool little group led by Noel Redding! There's a few slightly soulful moments on the set that make it nicely appealing to our ears – a bit hippy dippy to be sure, but with some nice drums, good production, and even some guest flute by the legendary Chris Wood. Titles include "Mr Moonshine", "All Night Drinker", "Petrol Pump Assistant", "How Can I Live", "Everything's Blue", and "Bright New Way". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch and light wear.)

✨✧ BuckinghamsTime & Charges ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the proudest pop moments in the Windy City during the 60s – the fantastic Columbia debut of The Buckinghams, easily one of the most tremendous vocal groups of their generation! At their core, the quintet work in a sunny way that's not unlike other pop acts – but the key difference here is that they're getting some incredible production and arrangements from James William Guerico, working in a pre-Chicago mode that has complicated horn charts pushing up brightly underneath the vocals – edging the whole mix way up into the stratosphere with a uniquely soaring sound! Other instrumentation is great too – bright, but never slick, and really complementing the vocals perfectly. Titles include "The Married Life", "Don't You Care", "Pitied Be The Dragon Hunter", "And Our Love", "I'll Be Back", and "Remember". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Live! ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Cannonball Adderley with David Axelrod production – a combination that couldn't miss back in the 60s! In keeping with the success of the Mercy Mercy Mercy album done with Axelrod, Capitol did everything they could to catch Cannonball in a live setting – a great move, given the open, soulful energy his group had in the format – crowd-pleasing, but always plenty darn creative too! Added to the mix here is some nice production by David Axelrod, capturing all the right moments in all the right ways – especially when Joe Zawinul steps up to take some sweet solos on the keys – and the great Charles Lloyd serves up some mighty nice work on flute and tenor sax. Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and titles include "The Song My Lady Sings", "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Work Song", and "Sweet Georgia Bright". ✨✧ Rahsaan Roland KirkKirkatron ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Later genius from Rahsaan Roland Kirk – a record of wonderful depth and soul, and a session that moves back to the straighter jazz focus of some of his work from the Mercury years – yet still keeps all the personality and charm of the best Atlantic sides! Roland's playing in a warm jazzy mode that still features some of his wit and tricks – but which also is even more nicely in a straight jazz vein on the album's best tracks – rolling out in a gently soulful 70s mode that features some slight electric touches, but which preserves a main focus on his own soulful work on a variety of saxes and flute. The lineup is great too – with a shifting group of players that include Hilton Ruiz, Billy Butler, Walter Perkins, and even the great Trudy Pitts – and titles include "Sugar", "Serenade To A Cuckoo", "The Christmas Song", "Los Angeles Negro Chorus", "Bright Moments", "Night In Tunisia", and "J. Griff's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny NashI Got Rhythm ... LP
ABC, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An excellent early album form Johnny Nash – one that's quite different than his later hits, and which has Johnny singing in a jazzy sort of mode that reminds us a lot of Jesse Belvin! Like Belvin, Johnny's got a warmly sweet voice that's lighter than Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, or other contemporaries crossing the bounds between jazz and R&B – and this album showcases that style especially well, by setting Nash up with some strong arrangements from Don Costa – all nicely bright, and with plenty of breakout jazz moments. Titles include "I'm Beginning To See The Light", "I Got Rhythm", "S Wonderful", "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", "Baby Baby Baby", and "It's All Right With Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ocean MoonCrystal Harmonics ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really unusual later entry in the KPM sound library series – a set that's mellower and a lot more meditative than some of the label's usual work – not action or funky soundtrack material, but instead an electronic set that resonates nicely with some of the Japanese minimal work of the time! The tunes here are of varying lengths, and really mix together a nice range of elements – some bright moments, some more obtuse sonic passages – sometimes with a bit of rhythm, oftentimes just flowing along on air! Titles include "New Infinity", "White Mirror", "Peace Bells", "Sleep Golden", "The Long Path", "Forest Motion", "Mountain Dreaming", and "Lost Oceans". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Archie SheppLife At The Donaueschingen Music Festival ... LP
MPS, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Some of Archie Shepp's most freewheeling material of the 60s – a long, extended, single-song album recorded at the Donaueschingen festival a few years before his classic work for BYG/Actuel – and very much in the same bold spirit as his recordings for that label! The single tune – "One For The Trane" – is opened up, stretched out, and run freely by Shepp on tenor, Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombones, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – a very unique lineup that benefits not just from the presence of two trombones, which gives the record a very deep, rich sound – but also from the creative rhythms of Garrison and Harris, a really great team for a session like this! Shepp is wonderful – still with this inherent sense of soul that also ties the performance to some of his brightest moments for Impulse Records – this structure, even when blowing free, that creates an amazing sense of swing somewhere back in the music. LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese non-gatefold pressing – ULS 1636. Spine has some light splitting, but this is a great copy overall.)

Brooklyn SoundsBrooklyn Sounds ... LP
Salsa/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99 About May 17, 2024
Proof that hard Latin didn't always happen on the uptown scene – and a self-titled cooker from this legendary combo from Brooklyn! The record's a killer all the way through – done with some very deep, dark trombone that colors the session like the best of Johnny Colon's material from the late 60s – inflected with some brighter salsa moments in the rhythms, but all very focused and tightly held together by the rhythms! In addition to the trombone, the piano is especially nice – and other instrumentation includes a bit of organ and plenty of percussion. Most numbers have vocals – and titles include "Guaguanco De Puerto Rico", "Perdicion", "En Las Tumbas", "Rain", and "Sueltame Ya". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mar-KeysGreat Memphis Sound ... LP
Stax, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great Memphis sound from the second greatest instrumental group on Stax next to Booker T & The MGs – heard here on a massive record that really pushes The Mar-Keys to the next level! On previous records, the combo always had a sound that was a bit brighter than Booker and his group – still soul, but not nearly as sharp. Yet this time around, they really dig deep – and have a way of smoking out plenty of the best soulful elements associated with the Stax Records sound – that great way with a heavy-stepping groove, instrumentation that's tight yet never slick, and solo moments that burst out and really give the tunes a hell of a lot of personality! The rhythm jumps out of the grooves on numbers like "Honey Pot", "Grab This Thing" and "Philly Dog", and the album winds up with a James Brown medley that's pretty darn swingin too. LP, Vinyl record album
(Original yellow label stereo pressing! Cover has some light wear, mostly near the top and bottom seams – but overall this is a great clean copy.)

✨✧ John ColtraneJohn Coltrane In The Winner's Circle (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Rare material from John Coltrane – tracks that were done for Bethlehem Records at a time when he was just rising up as a leader, and still contributed work as a sideman! The album features Trane playing tenor on only four of the album's eight tracks – making it kind of surprising that they used his name in the title – but the album is a lesser-known batch of large group recordings that offer an interesting early chapter in his career! The main force behind the album is arranger Harry Tubbs – possibly not a name that's as sexy as John Coltrane, hence the billing – but a worthy leader for the date, given the quality of the music. Many of the other players here are small combo heroes who can also shine brightly in bigger groups – such as Donald Byrd and Art Farmer on trumpets, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – plus Rolf Kuhn, making an early American appearance on clarinet. Coltrane gets in some nice, but short moments on the date – but the bigger charm is the full ensemble work – on titles that include "She Didn't Say Yes", "Turtle Walk", "At Home With The Blues", "Seabreeze", and "Love & The Weather". ✨✧ Woody ShawWoody Shaw Concert Ensemble – At The Berliner Jazztage ... LP
Muse, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Woody Shaw albums of the 70s – a masterpiece of soulful expression, filled with the kind of righteous touches we always love in Woody's work! The album's recorded live, with an even more open feeling than some of Shaw's studio sets – and features an excellent group of modernist 70s soul jazz players – all wrapped together with fire and imagination, and the sort of soaring rhythms that really makes the all shine brightly! Players include Rene McLean on alto and flute, Frank Foster on tenor and soprano, Slide Hampton on trombone, Ronnie Matthews on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and at some surprising moments, the horn players also play a bit of percussion! Titles include a killer reading of "In The Land Of The Blacks" – plus "Jean Marie", "Hello To The Wind", and "Obsequious". LP, Vinyl record album

Tom BrowneRockin Radio ... LP
Arista, 1983. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A classic killer from trumpeter Tom Browne – a smoking set that still has all the jazz funk touches of his earlier records, yet which also picks up a bit of an electro vibe as well! The move here is a bit like that taken by some of Browne's labelmates on GRP at the time – particularly Bobby Broom and Bernard Wright – and offers up a great mix of jazzy roots and some of the newer sounds hitting the streets in the early 80s – a vibe that's maybe one of the first moments when older genres of music were beginning to show an influence from hip hop! Maurice Starr handles most of the production, and really makes things tight throughout – but Tom himself does a great job of keeping things interesting with the solos, augmenting the electric vibe with some rock-solid acoustic playing. Titles include "Rockin Radio", "Angeline", "Brighter Tomorrow", "Never My Love", "Mr Business", "Cruisin", and "Feel Like Makin Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Emanuel HarroldWe Da People ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $19.99 34.99
Drummer Emanuel Harrold is way more than just a musician on the set – and the record is way more than jazz as well – as Emanuel works with some great guests throughout, and turns the whole thing into a record that's more like some soul-styled soundsystem overall! There's definitely plenty of jazzy moments on the set – nice work on flute, alto, Fender Rhodes, and guitar – but the singers who appear on different cuts really help shape the sound of the record in great ways – given a lot of freedom by Harrold to do their things, at a level that's very different than just a vocalist joining in on a jazz session. Gregory Porter gives us one of his best songs in years – the wonderful "I Think" – and singers on other cuts include Shareef Keyes on "See", Crystal Ransom on "Brighter Day", Saunders Sermons on "Good Word", and Malcolm Jamal Warner on "We Da People" – and other cuts include "Shine Light" and "Fight Harder" – the last of which features trumpet from Keyon Harrold. ✨✧ Masao YagiInga ... LP
King/Lawson (Japan), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $42.99 49.99
Great 70s work from Japanese pianist Masao Yagui – a set that's got some fusion elements, but which also holds onto some of his earlier modern energies as well! The lineup here is relatively large – with Yagui on piano and keyboards, plus Akira Miyazawa on tenor, Shigeo Suziki on alto, Shin Kazuhara on trumpet, and Kiyoshi Sugimoto on guitar – mostly moving in these sharp lines that almost get a bit funky, but occasionally laying back into these mellower moments that are even more soulful! The set begins and ends with beautiful acoustic solos from Masao – and titles include "Memories", "No Ifs No Buts", "Sad Song", "Blossom In The Water", and "Brighter Than The Colour Of White". ✨✧ Jade WarriorJade Warrior ... LP
Vertigo/Trading Places (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The fantastic debut of Jade Warrior – a group who were one of the most unique prog acts to record for the Vertigo label in the 70s! Jade Warrior is just a trio – and unlike some of the harder-rocking power trios of the time, the group have a way of balancing softness and intensity, acoustic modes and electric ones – all with a unique style that also offers up some of the exoticism promised by their name! Yet don't worry about that last aspect – as things here are never too heavy-handed, as the group are Brit to their core – maybe balancing some of the lighter Mel Collins moments of King Crimson and the more personal Ian Anderson songs of Jethro Tull – in a line up that features percussion and flute from Jon Field, guitar from Tony Duhig, and bass and these great raspy vocals from Glyn Havard. Titles include "Masami Morning", "Windweaver", "Petunia", "Telephone Girl", "Psychiatric Sergeant", "Slow Ride", and "A Prenormal Day At Brighton". LP, Vinyl record album
