✨✧ John AddisonBridge Too Far – Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
United Artists, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest 70s moments from film composer John Addison – music scored for an all-star movie that was maybe a bit too all-star in the long run – but which features Addison really knocking it out of the park with the music! The vibe is more like the best 60s war dramas than you'd guess from the date – orchestrations that mix together bold passages of action with some more subtle dramatic moments – woodwinds and strings used by Addison with effortless ease, and often some nicely dark touches lurking in the deep backgrounds! Titles include "Human Roadblock", "Nijmegen Bridge", "Underground Resistance", "Before The Holocaust", "A Dutch Rhapsody", and "March Of The Paratroopers". CD

Colin BlunstoneEcho Bridge ... CD
Permanent (UK), 1995. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The man with one of the most godlike voices in rock is back in action – heard here in a recent recording, one of the few post-70s sides that really does him justice! Colin's breathiness is a bit faded, but cast in professional arrangements that still have enough space to let him dominate the material – and the set's also got an interesting choice of songs that shows that Colin's not content to just rehash his older hits, as he did on a few other recent projects. Titles include "Levi Stubbs' Tears", "Tearing The Good Things Down", "The Radio Was Playing Johnny Come Lately", "What Is Love", "Oxygen", "If I Said", and "Breakaway". CD

✨✧ Bridge (Rodrigo Amado/Alexander Von Schlippenbach/Ingebrigt Haker Flaten)Beyond The Margins ... CD
Trost (Austria), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tenor player Rodrigo Amado spearheads an excellent international quartet session – bridging the inspiration of 60s heavyweights Sonny Rollins and Albert Ayler to a modern, boldly improvisational sound that still connects strongly to the inspired roots! The group features pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Gerry Hemingway on drums, with each getting strong lead moments on the 40+ minute "Beyond The Margins", the length offering plenty of space to roll from loose beauty to heavy-hitting tension. The shorter, no less brilliant group composed "Personal Mountains" might be all the more impressive for doing so much with a bit of brevity, and a take on Ayler's "(Visiting) Ghosts" closes it out. ✨✧ Paul DesmondBridge Over Troubled Water ... LP
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The legendary alto saxophonist Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel – with results that are simply amazing, and very different than the originals! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more jazz-based mode – one that has some of the slight Brazilian undercurrents in the rhythms that you'll find on Desmond's previous two albums for CTI! The full arrangements are by Don Sebesky, who brings a great sense of balance to the set – and Herbie Hancock plays some great electric piano, in a group that also features Airto on percussion and Gene Bertoncini on guitar. But the real star of the set is Paul Desmond – blowing with that amazing tone of his – and sliding from tune to tune with effortless ease, in a way that really transforms these tunes in their instrumental readings. Titles include "Cecilia", "Mrs. Robinson", "America", "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright", and "Scarborough Fair" – all done with a sweet jazzy A&M approach! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DJ KawasakiBridge Into The Future – DJ Kawasaki Recreated Tracks ... LP
Lawson (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
DJ Kawasaki has given the world plenty of great club tracks over the years – but here, he reworks his music in a variety of different styles – sometimes funk, sometimes soul, sometimes a bit of jazz – all with a level of expression that really takes us back to that moment when the Japanese scene was really crossing over with American soul! The vibe here is much richer than if you've just caught some of Kawasaki's tracks floating around the digital world – and the whole thing works really well as a whole – with guest work from Bird, N'Dea Davenport, Karin, and others – on titles that include recreations of the tunes "I'm So On Your Mind", "Let The Music Play", "Shooting Star", "Blazin", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Bright Like Light", "So Far Away", and "Planetary Track". Floating BridgeFloating Bridge (gray vinyl pressing) ... LP
Vault, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 28.99 On June 14, 2024
Late 60s hard blues & psychedelia infused rock from Floating Bridge – a group that sounds clearly indebted to fellow Pacific Northwester Hendrix – but hold their own very well on a hard grooving mix of covers and originals. The group either gigged a ton back in the day or were simply a natural fit, because they sound together in both the tightly grooving and more loose-limbed grooves. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy Goldenberg/Brooklyn Bridge/Bobby RussellGrasshopper ... LP
National General, Early 70s. Sealed Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Quite a groovy soundtrack – a mixture of vocal and instrumental numbers written by Billy for this groovy film about the liberated woman of the late 60s! The album sports a few vocal numbers by bigger stars – "Look Again" by the Brooklyn Bridge, "Used To Be" by Vicki Lawrence, and "As Far As I'm Concerned" by Bobby Russell – but the best tunes are the shorter instrumental ones by Goldenberg. These have a sparkling quality that mixes easy instrumentation, some slight grooves, and a few mode touches of instrumentation – like electric sitar, guitar, and more. What this means is that about half the album is very nice groovy music – with titles that include "La De Da", "Tommy Doesn't Like Rosie At All", "Traveling With A Star", "Christine In Las Vegas", "Bonanza Paree", and "Soft Music For Rosie". Al HaigChelsea Bridge ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
Bop legend Al Haig gets a wonderful setting here – a beautifully-recorded trio date done for the Japanese market – with sensitive backing that really shows the development in Haig's sound and style over the years! Bassist Jamil Nasser is a wonderful choice for the group – playing with these round, well-shaped lines that seem to unlock a whole new lyrical side in Al's music – and drummer Billy Higgins fits in perfectly, able to work this subtle magic behind Haig, similar to his stellar sessions with Cedar Walton. The set list is great – material that also shows a side of Al that you might not expect – and titles include Antonio Carlos Jobim's "How Insensitive", Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance", and Wayne Shorter's "Maoco" – plus "Sweet and Lovely", "Chelsea Bridge", "Love Will Find A Way", "Lush Life", and "We'll Be Together". ✨✧ Bobby Harden & The Soulful SaintsBridge Of Love (black haze vinyl pressing) ... LP
Dala, 2023. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Bobby Harden's got a great way of putting over a tune – he's not a soul singer out to top James Brown, or try to leap into the fray with a real funky frenzy – and instead, he approaches the material with the laidback confidence of some of our southern soul favorites from years past – all with a vibe that really makes the album shine! The presentation of the songs by the Soulful Saints is great – themselves an equally understated group, and clearly aware that Bobby's the main attraction of the set – which he definitely is, in this overdue debut that's clearly going to make him one of the best underground soul singers in years to come. Titles include "One Tribe", "Wounded Hearts", "Bridge Of Love", "Runnin", "Raise Your Mind", "It's My Time", "Feels So Good", and "One Night Of The Week". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sylvaine Helary/Fred Longberg-Holm/Eve Risser/Mike ReedSync – Bridge Sessions 02 ... CD
Bridge Sessions (France), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A session of loose tones and open sounds – served up over long, improvised tracks that have a nicely slow-building approach – so that the acoustic elements are often abstracted into the larger mix of music! The quartet features Mike Reed on drums, Eve Risser on piano, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, and Sylvain Helary on flutes – but two of the players are also listed as using "effects", and Risser also plays prepared piano – so that the whole group quickly moves past expectations, onto sonic splendor throughout! Reed's got the strength to keep things moving forward, even in subtle ways – and although his presence is sometimes gentle, it still feels like the energetic core of the performance. Titles include "Golay", "Turbo", and "Goppa". CD

✨✧ Daunik Lazro/Joe McPhee/Joshua Abrams/Guillaume Seguron/Chad TaylorPride Of Lions – Bridge Sessions 08 ... CD
Bridge Sessions (France), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from a trans-Atlantic group – one that features really beautiful work on saxes from Daunik Lazro, in one of his best settings in many years! All the other musicians here are fantastic – as in addition to Daunik on tenor and baritone, the rest of the group features Joe McPhee on tenor and pocket trumpet, Joshua Abrams on bass and guembri, Guillaume Seguron on bass as well, and Chad Taylor on drums and mbira! Given the use of the double basses, there's a strong bottom end here – and that's perfect for those organic tones that we've always loved from Lazro's horn, since first discovering him in the 80s – a very different trajectory of improvisation than some of his European contemporaries, with a quality that seems to bring out more from McPhee as well. Taylor just keeps exploding with his talents in recent years, and is a perfect partner for the music here – and all the tracks are improvised, save for a snippet of Albert Ayler's "Mothers" which appears at one spot. ✨✧ Peggy LeeThen Was Then Now Is Now/Bridge Over Troubled Water (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Collectors Choice, 1965/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer Peggy Lee on Capitol Records – 2 very groovy albums on a single CD! Then Was Then is a sublime mid 60s effort that has Peggy working with arrangers Sid Feller, Billy May, and Cy Coleman – all of whom continue in the same groovy territory Lee hit at the time with Jack Marshall – a blend of romping rhythms, swinging jazz, and some slightly soulful touches that really come off well! The song selection is especially great – as it features some really unusual numbers that get past overdone standards, and some of the too-heard tunes from Peggy's Capitol years. Titles include "I Go To Sleep", "Then Was Then", "Seventh Son", "They Say", "Trapped In The Web Of Love", "Losers Weepers", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Leave It To Love". Bridge Over Troubled Water is wonderful work from Peggy Lee's newly mature years on Capitol Records – a set that follows from some of the hipper arranging and songwriting styles she was working with at the end of the 60s! Peggy's badass 60s self is even more pronounced here – as she's a forthright, adult singer on most of the tunes – workign with subjects she might not have touched at all a decade before – all with some great help on arrangements from the mighty Mike Melvoin. A few tunes are older, but most are relatively contemporary for the time of the album's release – and titles include "Something Strange", "You'll Remember Me", "He Used Me", "I See Your Face Before Me", "Always Something There To Remind Me", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?" CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Maybe This Summer", "Stop Living In The Past", and "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big". CD

Bridge Sessions (France), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing mix of acoustic and electric elements – a set that's in part very much like some of the more freewheeling work of cornetist Rob Mazurek, but which also features an organic core in the presence of AACM reedman Mwata Boden! Bowden adds in clarinet, baritone, didgeridoo, and percussion – all of which provide a very striking contrast and strong sense of soul alongside the electric guitar of Julian Desprez, electric bass of Matt Lux, and acoustic guitar of Mathieu Sourisseau – a French/Chicago combination of players who really stretch out here on two long tracks! Mazurek also adds some electronics next to his cornet – as on other recordings – and the set features the great addition of Douglas Ewart on half of the set – whose use of English horn and bamboo piccolo echo the spiritual currents of Bowden. Titles include "Fourth View" and "Second Side". CD

✨✧ MC Shan/Roxanne ShanteBridge (voc)/Roxanne Revenge (voc) ... 12-inch
Pop Art, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
If you want to appreciate BDP's "South Bronx", you've gotta hear this one. If ya don't know... MC Shan recorded "The Bridge", saying hip hop started in Queensbridge, Queens. BDP replied with "South Bronx", setting the record straight (as we see it). "South Bronx" uses the same beat and replies to "The Bridge" almost line for line. MC Shan then replied with "Kill That Noise", followed by the final word from BDP with "The Bridge Is Over". Shan's first single was "Feed The World" on MCA (which explains KRS's line "You got dropped off MCA, cuz the rhymes you wrote was wack" on "South Bronx"). We won't even begin with the other entries in the Queens/Bronx Battle like MC Poet's "Beat You Down", which was directed at KRS. (And somehow Poet returned to the game as a member of Screwball, with an LP on Tommy Boy.) . . . And you thought the LL/Canibus/Wyclef battle went on too long! All that trivia aside, the record is up there as one of our favorites from the class of '85. The b-side is Roxanne Shante's first single, "Roxanne's Revenge" – by far the best of the Roxanne replies. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Buck Owens & His BuckaroosBridge Over Troubled Water ... LP
Capitol, 1971. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Bakersfield genius Buck Owens is best known for his trailblazing, electric honky tonk sound (on top of hamming it up on Hee Haw), but by the late 60s and into the 70s the ever restless Buck tried on a number of different styles – including well known folk rock hits for this set! Rather than adapting tunes by Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Donovan and others as honky tonk numbers, Buck sort of meets the tunes halfway. (That makes sense – why would he take a turn onto a new neighborhood if he wasn't interested in a different path?) He does inject the Buckaroo twang, but he smooths out his usual punchy vocals, and projects a warmth that would have been impossible if Buck wasn't really feeling it. Great stuff – a left turn for both mainstream folk fans and honky tonk purists, but one worth taking! Tracks include "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", "Within My Loving Arms", "The Devil Made Me Do It", "San Francisco Town", "Love Minus Zero-No Limit", "I Am A Rock" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowing late 50s sessions might not expect the album to work – but instead, it sets up his playing in a whole new mode that brings out a leaner, more confident, more sophisticated solo mode that shows that his time woodshedding in retirement was well spent. Territory Band (with Ken Vandermark)Transatlantic Bridge ... CD
Okka Disk, 2000. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
The fantastic first record from Chicago's Territory Band – a project headed up by saxophonist Ken Vandermark, and one that definitely builds the Transatlantic Bridge that's promised by the title! During the second half of the 90s, the Chicago avant scene really exploded with some great younger players – and also drew a lot of guests from other global scenes too – creating a lively cross-breeding of sounds, styles, and ideas – all of which are represented strongly by this group! The lineup features Jim Baker on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Axel Dorner on trumpet, Dave Rempis on alto and tenor, Kent Kessler on bass, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, and both Paul Lytton and Tim Mulvenna play drums – which makes for a super heavy sense of energy throughout. Vandermark blows tenor, bass clarinet, and b flat clarinet – on titles that include "Collage (for Kurt Schwitters)", "RM (for Marcel Duchamp)", "Mobile (for Alexander Calder)", and "Stabile (for Hans Hoffmann)". VariousBridge Into The New Age – Funky Afro-Centric Spiritual Sounds From Jazz's Forgotten Decade ... CD
BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Beautifully spiritual jazz from the post-Coltrane generation – a wealth of righteous grooves from the early 70s – brought together in one mighty collection! If you dig the work of Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and other giants on Impulse Records, this is a great way to dig even deeper – and hear the way their late 60s legacy inspired other musicians to new heights in their own music – sounds that hit a new level of freedom in jazz, yet which are still filled with enough swing and soul to avoid some of the more avant modes of the free jazz scene! If that description sounds a bit obtuse, then just plug into the collection, and let the music do its thing – as it's got a very powerful vibe throughout – the kind of inspirational, socially conscious work that flourished best during the 70s – and which is finally getting its due all these many years later. The package is new territory for Ace/BGP, but they've done a great job as usual – picking key tracks from the era, and coming up with detailed notes on each of the long tracks. Titles include "Free Angela" by Bayete, "Bridge Into The New Age" by Azar Lawrence, "Tress Cun De O La" by Joe Henderson, "Ebony Queen" by McCoy Tyner, "Peace" by Idris Muhammad, "Mother Of The Future" by Norman Connors, "Brown Warm & Wintry" by Jack DeJohnette, "I've Known Rivers" by Gary Bartz, and "Fire" by Joe Henderson & Alice Coltrane. J.Bridge/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great record – and the kind of lost soul that has group collectors digging through the used bins year after year! Smoke hailed from Kansas City, and they were sweet harmony group in the mode of many of their east coast contemporaries. The record was recorded in 1976, but has a sound that's more 1972 or 1973 – with some uptempo righteous cuts, and some heavenly floating ballads that really hit the best sort of group soul harmony heaven! The record appears to have been recorded in Chicago – as the engineer is Paul Serrano, and the arrangements were handled by Benjamin Wright. Tracks include "I Can Feel Your Love (Comin' Down On Me)", "Cream Of The Crop", "I'm So Lonely", "Have I Really Lost You", and "Don't Take Your Love". A smooth groove classic through and through! Rogue Art/Bridge (France), 2024. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
One of the most wonderful records we've ever heard from trumpeter Corey Wilkes – a set that seems to unlock new territory in his music, and has him working in a really unbridled setting overseas! The album just features one single track – "Oysters For The Masters" – improvised at points, but always grooving – with this sublime blend of free jazz, funk, and touches of soul – especially at points when the organist Justin Dillard delivers this righteous spoken passage that's totally great! Wilkes plays some electronics and percussion as well – shifting effortlessly between instruments – alongside co-leader Quentin Biardeau, who blows tenor and handles more electronics – in a group that also features Etienn Ziemniak on drums. There also seems to be some vibes in the mix too – and the shift of instrumentation and modes over the course of the nearly 50 minute performance is totally great! CD

✨✧ Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

The set has Cannon playing without his usual group, in the context of an all-star batch of players that includes Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – who he worked with in his time with Miles Davis – plus occasional guest rhythm work by Albert and Percy Heath. The set's strong and straight ahead – a good bridge between Cannon's early Mercury recordings, and his later albums for Riverside and Capitol – tightly crafted solos with a good deal of soul, Adderley holding down all the horn work on the record. Titles include "If This Isn't Love", "Serenata", "Poor Butterfly", "I Remember You", and "I've Told Ev'ry Little Star". CD also features 2 bonus alternate tracks! CD

Gene Ammons has some pretty hip friends here – a roster of talent that includes guest appearances by hornmen Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, and Nat Adderley on one long jam number – plus Hampton Hawes on electric piano on the entire set! The work's done in a laidback, long-blowing way – more the Gene Ammons of earlier live dates than the revived funk hero of the early 70s Prestige years – but thanks to some nicely spacious keyboards from Hawes, the record's got a more modern sound than you might expect, and is a good bridge between 60s and 70s soul jazz modes. Titles include "New Sonny's Blues", "Treux Blue", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Yardbird Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Ceballas handles lead vocals, guitar, organ, and harmonica – and the group hail from San Francisco – where their appreciation of blues roots was mixing with lots of the freewheeling energy of the Fillmore scene – and we mean that in the best way possible! Powell's drums are fantastic throughout – really driving the whole thing along – and Aiello comes across like some lost lead act from the glory days of the arena scene. Jessie Belvin's often talked about in reverent tones as a bridge between a number of different styles of 50's R&B and vocal soul, but it's not until you hear a great compilation like this one that you realize how fantastic his stuff really is. This excellent Ace set compiles tracks from his great early years at Modern, and even includes some stuff that he did with the vocal group The Cliques. ✨✧ Eddie BertKaleidoscope ... CD
Discovery/Fresh Sound (Spain), Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant example of why Eddie Bert was one of the hippest trombonists of the 50s – a player who could bridge the worlds of Stan Kenton and Charles Mingus, and always come up with a sound that was one of the freshest on his instrument! The bulk of the CD features small combo work Bert recorded for the Discovery label in 1953 and 1954 – quintet sessions done with Duke Jordan on piano and Clyde Lombardi on bass, plus other players that include Sal Salvador on guitar, Vinnie Dean on alto sax, and Joe Morello on drums. Bert's sound throughout is fluid, lean, and modern – gliding with light colors one moment, a crisp modern edge the next, and a bit of boppish inflection at others – always opening up new areas of expression for the sometimes-staid trombone, and working here at a level that matches 50s invention of better-known players on the instrument. 4 additional tracks on the CD are from a previously unissued 1959 recording with Dean on alto, Lombardi on bass, Sal Mosca on piano, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums – plus a really unique 17 minute live recording of the title track by a quartet with Bert, Jordan, Lombardi, and Osie Johnson on drums. Bert's playing on this extended track alone is worth the price of admission – but the CD features a total of 73 minutes of music in all, on 17 tracks that include "Ripples", "Conversation Piece", "Interwoven", "Little Train", "Kaleidoscope", "Around Town", "Melting Pot", "He Ain't Got Rhythm", and "Blues At Sunrise". Enja (Germany), 1992. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last recordings made by Ed Blackwell before his early passing in 1992 – an Oakland live date recorded with an excellent lineup that includes Graham Haynes on cornet, Carlos Ward on alto and flute, and Mark Helias on bass – working without any piano, at a level that maybe echoes some of Ed's earlier work with Ornette Coleman, but with a voice that's completely his own. The style here is earthy and organic – never overly modern, and building in a way that echoes Blackwell's angular roots, but transforms that sound into more spiritually exploratory lines. Ward's work is especially great, and the absence of a piano means that the interplay between cornet and sax is the main driving force of most tunes. A fantastic testament to the genius of the transatlantic meeting that is the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet – a group that manages to bridge the sometimes-unwieldy modes of the improvising orchestra, and the energy of a smaller free jazz combo! All the players seem tied together perfectly – both at an emotional level, and a musical one – so that the combination of energy is way more than the sum of its mighty parts – a real accomplishment, given that the "parts" include Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Marts Gustafsson, and Mars Williams on reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, and both Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. The set begins with a searing 37 minute piece dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg – Vandermark's "All Things Being Equal", which almost has a Mingus-like combination of structure and solo. "Images" follows, and is a more freewheeling piece – but completely wonderful too! CD

✨✧ Peter Brotzmann/Hamid Drake/Mahmoud GaniaWels Concert ... CD
Okka Disk, 1997. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual Peter Brotzmann records we've ever heard – and we mean that in the best way possible! The live improvisation features Brotzmann on tenor, alto, tarogato, and e-flat clarinet – working with Hamid Drake on drums, tablas, and percussion – but alongside Moroccan gnawa musician Mahmoud Gania (or Guinia), whose music is a really different addition to the Brotzmann sound! Hamid Drake provides a great bridge between both players – still working as a free jazz musician, but also bringing a wider range of sounds to his percussion, which blends perfectly with Gania's creations on the warm-toned strings of the guembri, and his occasional vocalizations too. The whole thing is amazing – and the balance of avant reeds, percussion, and regional sounds rivals some of the best of the MPS jazz-meets-world titles from years back. The improvisation is 70 minutes in length – and breathtaking throughout! CD

Brilliant work by the team of Clifford Brown and Max Roach – a seminal hardbop album that was one of the few to bridge the east and west coast scenes! The set was recorded in LA under the joint leadership of Brown and Roach – and features the classic quintet lineup that included Harold Land on tenor, Richie Powell (Bud's brother!) on piano, and George Morrow on bass. The mix of Roach's heavy full-on drumming and Brown's lyrical beauty is beyond compare – and Land's angular and sensitive tenor lines provide a perfect link between the two. Titles include classics like "Parisian Thoroughfare", "The Blues Walk", "Daahoud", "Jordu", and "Joy Spring". CD

✨✧ Sidiku BuariFeelings In Africa/Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters ... CD
Precious/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of rare records by Sidiku Buari – issued back to back on a single CD! Feelings is a record that was issued on the tiny Precious label – home to only two Buari albums in its tiny catalog – and the set follows strongly on the work that Sidiku recorded in New York during the 70s, records that were initially issued just under his last name! The groove on some tracks is full of early 80s NYC touches – sweet electro keyboards that provide some great middle-ground shocks to the tunes – while beats crackle crispy at the bottom, and Buari sings these slinky soul vocals that are a lot more American than you'd guess from the Ghanaian recording of the album. But other numbers have more of a West Africa vibe – that updating of older modes that was taking place in Nigeria too. Titles include "Music", "Feelings", "Anowar", and "Yayo Papa". Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters has a groove that definitely lives up to its name – a sweet 80s crackle with lots of tunes that jam in an old school funk style – keyboards, basslines, and rhythms right on the money – in a great Transatlantic bridge between Ghana and New York City! The set begins with the super-funky "Let's Go To Funky Town" – a tune with a break on the intro to rival some of the best funky club work of the time – and the vibe continues strongly through the rest of the set, on titles that include "Sophisticated Jammer", "Power To My People", "Rhythm Of Africa", "Minsumobo", and "Karambani". ✨✧ Solomon BurkeElectronic Magnetism ... LP
MGM, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An album of stunning beauty, and one of Solomon's best-ever! He's recording here in a vein that's more in keeping with the smoother Southern soul sound that began to dominate later in the generation – with weeping guitars, soaring strings, and smooth keyboards – and the sound is a perfect accompaniment to Solomon's raspy voice, and actually brings out a lot more soul than his rootsier recordings. The title cut is a stunning love song that taps into the natural force of magnetism, and which shows that Solomon hasn't lost an ounce of his talent. Other cuts include "Stand", "No Man Walks Alone", "Bridge Of Life", and his weird medley of Elton John tracks, called "Three Psalms of Elton". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderful live work from RL Burnside – done in that instantly-timeless style that he brought to recordings right from the start – maybe even more so here, as the acoustics are fantastic, and really capture the spirit of the man and his guitar! As most folks know, Burnside was a bit late to the rural blues game – but because of that fact, he's also been a key bridge between the past and the present – especially with recordings like this, which bristle with a sort of honest, back to basics vibe. Titles include "Short Haired Woman", "Sweet Black Angel", "If You Don't Want Me Baby", "Long Distance Call", "Walkin Blues", "Death Bells Ringing", and "When My First Wife Left Me". ✨✧ Donald ByrdKofi ... CD
Blue Note, 1969/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic set of tracks that was recorded at the cusp of the 70s, but which wasn't (for some strange reason) released until many years later! Donald Byrd's playing here with two different larger groups, and the music is a perfect bridge between his spacey late 60s attempts to mimic Miles Davis, and his tighter early 70s jazz funk work with Larry Mizell. The instrumentation's a bit different than usual, and includes a warm frontline of Frank Foster on tenor, Lew Tabackin on flute and tenor, and William Campbell on trombone – all working with these charts that are full and flowing – really strong, soulful elements that get some further great touches from Duke Pearson on Fender Rhodes! Rhythms echo some of Pearson's own great music of the time, with lots of Brazilian undercurrents – no surprise, given that Duke produced the record – and titles include "Kofi", "Fufu", "Perpetual Love", and "Elmina". Spoon (Austria), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second album from Can – and one that the group maybe likes to think of as more of a bridge between Monster Movie and Tago Mago – tracks done for a variety of film projects, but which also still really show the quick evolution of the group at the time! Some of the work still features original singer Malcolm Mooney, and others feature the new rising star of Damo Suzuki – but what might be most striking here is the drum work of Jaki Liebezeit, who already seems to be pushing forward with that rhythmic pulse that would soon make the early 70s Can so amazing – recorded with stark brilliance and blended with edgey percussion, at a level that makes most of the tracks unlike anything else the world had ever heard before! Of course, there's still plenty of tremendous bass from Holger Czukay, guitar from Michael Karoli, and keyboards from Irmin Schmidt – all of whom sound amazing here – on titles that include "Mother Sky", "Deadlock", "Tango Whiskeyman", "Don't Turn The Lights On Leave Me Alone", "Soul Desert", and "She Brings The Rain". Classic work from one of Brazil's greatest soul singers of the 70s – an album of rich feeling that's a wonderful bridge between American soul music and some of the sophisticated song stylings of the MPB generation! Cassiano's somewhere in the territory of contemporary Tim Maia – but is a bit smoother and more sophisticated – more of a mature soul mode next to Maia's rougher funk – served up here with impeccable arrangements that really draw from all the best changes in Brazilian music during the early 70s. The album includes the funky "Central Do Brasil", the extended midtempo groover "Onda", the semi-hit "Hoje E Natal", and the cuts "De Bar Em Bar", "Ana", "A Lua E Eu", and "Salve Essa Flor". Don CherryCherry Jam ... LP
Gearbox, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... About February 26, 2021 (delayed)
Never-issued work from Don Cherry – and a really key piece of the puzzle in the career of this legendary trumpeter! The recordings were done for Swedish Radio, with great fidelity – more than just live tracks captured in a club, and instead some really thoughtful material that marks an early pairing of Cherry's talents with the Swedish scene that he would soon call home! Don plays cornet, and the music is maybe a bit inside compared to some of his later Swedish experiments – but still pretty amazing, and a great bridge from his work with Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins. Players include Mogens Bollerup on tenor, Atli Bjorn on piano, Benny Nielsen on bass, and Simon Koppel on drums – and titles include the Cherry originals "Priceless", "Nigeria", and "The Ambassador From Greenland" – plus a reading of "You Took Advantage Of Me". ✨✧ Don CherrySummer House Sessions ... LP
Blank Forms, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Here's a summer house we'd really like to visit on our next vacation – a legendary spot in Sweden, where Don Cherry created freely with some of the hippest players on the local scene in 1968! The tracks here were all recorded for later commercial release, which never ended up happening – and they represent a key bridge in Cherry's career between his important American work of the mid 60s, and his growing global consciousness to come – maybe a first chapter in the sound that would become the Organic Music Society! The set features work from an array of musicians that includes Cherry on pocket trumpet and flute, Bernt Rosengren on tenor and flute, Gunnar Lindqvist on reeds, Tommy Koverhult on tenor and a variety of flutes, Jacques Thollot and Leif Wennerstrom on drums, Torbjorn Hultcrantz and Kent Carter on bass, and percussion from Bulent Ates – plus other members of the group! There's no vocals, but there's a strong sense of rhythmic cohesion throughout – freewheeling jazz, but not entirely free either – and filled with a global inspiration that makes the whole thing come off with an organic sense of beauty. Titles include "The Machine Age", "Sir Charles Brackeen A", "Mao", "Samba", "Plotslight", and "Human". LP, Vinyl record album
