Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, & Brian BladeRoundAgain ... CD
Nonesuch, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of those rare cases where an all-star group is really worth the weight of its talent – as this quartet really sounds wonderful together, and make you know that you're in for a treat right from the very first note in the set! The best energy of the record might come from the rhythmic conception of drummer Brian Blade, and maybe a bit of the spirit of bassist Christian McBride – because pianist Brad Mehldau and tenorist Joshua Redman come off with all these really inventive, creative elements – very much structured around a sense of rhythm, although one that's nicely complex at most moments – a less-familiar sort of swing, and we mean that in the best way possible. Titles include "Father", "Floppy Diss", "Your Part To Play", ":Moe HOnk", "Right Back Round Again", and "Undertow". CD

✨✧ Brian BladeBrian Blade Fellowship ... CD
Blue Note, 1997. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An important Blue Note set from the end of the 90s – a record that marked a bit of a shift in the label's approach, and really set the scene for a more open ear to new sounds to come! Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. Titles include "The Undertow", "In Spite Of Everything", "Folklore", "If You See Lurah", "Mohave", and "Red River Revel". CD

✨✧ Christopher Parker & Kelley Hurt with Brian BladeNo Tears Suite ... CD
Mahakala, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic project dedicated to the legendary Brown V Board Of Education moment in the Civil Rights Movement – a suite of tracks recorded in Little Rock, home of the original moment of integration – with music by pianist Christopher Parker, and songs and recitations from Kelley Hurt! The jazz component of the record is strong enough to make us love it on its own – well-crafted songs that flow openly, and soulfully – with performances from Bobby Lavell on tenor, Mark Franklin on trumpet, and Chad Flower on alto – kept swinging by the drums of Brian Blade and bass of Bill Huntington. Hurt's contributions are balanced with the instrumental moments in a very nice way – and titles include "Roll Call", "To Be A Kid", "Crisis", "Jubilate", and "Overture/By The Numbers". CD

✨✧ Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, & Roy HargroveDirections In Music – Live At Massey Hall ... CD
Verve, 2002. Used ... $5.99
We have to admit, we had a lot of misgivings about this project before we gave it a chance and listened to it all the way through – but after all was said and done, we were quite impressed! While Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove and Michael Brecker all have the chops, recognition and reputations to make as many new recordings as they'd like, without resorting to pandering tributes, this project actually works beautifully and makes great sense. The group is rounded out by the elastic rhythms provided by John Patitucci (who seems to have graduated well beyond the sort of 6 string noodling he usually purveys) and Brian Blade. In most cases, we'd rather hear Miles doing Miles and Trane doing Trane, but this group manages to capture both the dark, brooding beauty of Miles' music and the deeper, soulful vein that Coltrane mined. Herbie sounds the best we've heard in ages and the highlight of this live set is a medley of Miles' "So What" and Coltrane's "Impressions", while the rest of the set is made up mostly of originals (2 more Coltrane pieces, "Naima" and "Tansition" are included) composed by members of the group like Hancock's "The Sorcerer" and Hargrove's "The Poet". Rolf & Joachim KuhnLifeline ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 2012. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The brilliant return of Rolf and Joachim Kuhn to Impulse Records – and a set that's every bit as their landmark album for the label in the 60s! As with that classic – Impressions Of New York – there's a sound here that's let free right from the start – bold stepping forward by both players, with piano and clarinet interwoven together in lines that are free, yet still have an inherent sort of pulse – guided subtly by the work of John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums! What's truly amazing is that the Kuhns sound as vibrant, urgent, and potent as ever – as if the passage of decades hasn't dimmed them a bit, and that they're still breaking down barriers of jazz with a record like this. Titles include "Girona", "Lion's Speech", "Mosquitas", "A Little Time Machine", "Light Year", and "Researching Has No Limits". CD

Ron MilesRainbow Sign ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The Blue Note debut of cornet player Ron Miles – a musician with a great sense of phrasing, and maybe some of the strongest sense of color we've ever heard come from the instrument in recent years! The group here, though, is really a strong part of that sense of tone – as the lineup features Bill Frisell delivering some delicious elements on guitar, and Jason Moran fleshing things out on piano – while drummer Brian Blade works with his strong sense of spaciousness, often letting the silences between his drumbeats do as much as the percussion itself. Bassist Thomas Morgan wraps the whole thing together from the bottom up – and Miles delivers a strong set of original compositions for the record – including "Queen Of The South", "Like Those Who Dream", "The Rumor", "Custodian Of The New", "This Old Man", "Blinder", "A Kind Word", and "Rainbow Sign". SF Jazz CollectiveInaugural Season Live 2004 – Inaugural Concert Tour (3CD set) ... CD
SF Jazz, 2004. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 35.00
The start of a fantastic tradition – the first-ever recording of the SF Jazz Collective, a kickoff to a series that would give us amazing records for years to come! This time around, the group work through a series of Ornette Coleman tunes, re-arranged by Gil Goldstein for the octet – which features an all-star lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Joshua Redman on tenor, Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Miguel Zenon on alto, Josh Roseman on trombone, Renee Rosnes on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, and Brian Blade on drums – all strong leaders on their own, but doing a remarkable job here of putting aside egos and working together as a whole! Coleman tunes include "Una Muy Bonita", "Lonely Woman", "School Work", "Happy House", and "When Will The Blues Leave" – and originals include "Of This Day's Journey", "Wages", "March Madness", and "Rise & Fall". You might not know the name of the group, but there's plenty of familiar names in the lineup – yet all coming together to build something new and fresh – a set with echoes of a variety of different southern landscapes, recorded and improvised in a studio in New Orleans! This isn't the usual Crescent City jazz, as the vibe here is a mix of freely improvised moments and deeper thematic passages – spread out over three long tracks that work together well as a suite, performed by William Parker on bass, Brian Blade on drums, Chad Fowler on alto, Marc Franklin on trumpet, Christopher Parker on piano, and Kelley Hurt on voice. Titles include "The Bond", "The Emergence", and "The Release". CD

✨✧ Wayne ShorterFootprints – Live! ... CD
Verve, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most adventurous records we've heard from Wayne Shorter in years – a collection of live recordings made in Europe in the summer of 2001, featuring a free-thinking group that includes Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. The sound here is almost end-of-the-60s Shorter – as the tracks have an incredible amount of space, and might at times almost be dubbed "out". Shorter returns to his angular genius on tenor and soprano sax – crafting long, complicated lines that have a lot more edginess than we've heard from him in years! Titles include "Go", "Valse Triste", "Sanctuary", "Masquelero", "Footprints", and "Atlantis". CD

✨✧ Yaya3Yaya3 ... CD
Loma, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great album from the Yaya trio of Joshua Redman, Sam Yahel, and Brian Blade. Yahel plays Hammond organ on the set, and the format here is kind of like the late late Big John Patton and Larry Young albums for Blue Note – freer, more open grooves than the usual organ/tenor session, kind of an elliptical swing that's still very rooted in the soul jazz organ tradition, yet which also has a post-Coltrane sense of exploration. The setting is wonderful for Redman, who carves out some great solos on tenor and soprano, but the real star of the set is Yahel, whose organ work is sublime – with a tone and a style that we haven't heard executed this well in years! A real delight – the rare kind of new album that will please fans of classic Hammond grooves, yet also push the instrument to new heights of expression. Titles include "Hometown", "Slow Orbit", "Switchblade", "The Scribe", "One More Once", and "The Spirit Lives On". CD
