Ruby Braff, George Wein, & OthersJazz At The Boston Arts Festival (10 inch LP) ... LP
Storyville, 1954. Very Good+ ... $38.99
A great set of trad jazz grooves from the Boston scene of the 50s – recorded with an easygoing groove that's totally great, and put together by George Wein in the same spirit as some of his better-known live events of the time! Players include Ruby Braff on trumpet, Vic Dickenson and Dick Lefave on trombones, Al Drootin on clarinet, Sam Margolis on tenor, Buzzy Drootin on drums, and Wein himself on piano – and the tunes are open-ended swing-based numbers, with titles that include "High Society", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Swinging The Blues", "At The Jazz Band Ball", and "After You've Gone". ✨✧ VariousSkippy White Story – Boston Soul 1961 to 1967 ... LP
Yep Roc, Mid 1960s. Near Mint- Trifold ... Out Of Stock
If you never went to Skippy White's record store in Boston, you really missed a hell of a shop – a surprisingly great outlet for rare and underground soul, located way up in New England – and a place that was giving the world wonderful music over the course of many decades! Back in the early days of the store, Skippy really had his ear to the scene – and managed to capture all sorts of great artists who were working very underground on the Boston scene – mostly soul acts, but a bit of blues and gospel too – all featured here in the first-ever collection to look at White's work at this level. The package was put together by Eli Paperboy Reed, and has notes from Boston contemporaries Peter Guaralnick and Peter Wolf – yet it's far hipper than any of those references might imply – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Do The Thing" by Earl Lett, "I Love What I Found In You" by The Precisions, "I've Been Lifted Out Of Sin" by Sons Of David, "Evil Woman Blues" by Guitar Nubbit, "Treason" by The Precisions, "Holy Ghost & Fire" by The Lord's Messengers, "Skippy White (parts 1 & 2)" by Junior Washington, "I Was Standing" by Lynn Harmonizers, and "Now Is The Time" by Earl Lett. ✨✧ Charlie MarianoBoston All Stars ... LP
OJC, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Vital early Prestige work from alto sax great Charlie Mariano – who's fronting a quintet of Boston All Stars! The record includes a couple of his more essential early compositions in "Erosong" and "Barsac" – and Charlie's solos on those are incredible on those. It's also got some tightly-swinging takes on "Stella By Starlight" and "I'm Old Fashioned" (which Mariano decisively was not!) – "Bye Bye Blues" and "Bess, You Is My Woman". Dick Twardzik's piano also stands out tremendously throughout the set – along with Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, Bernie Griggs on bass and Jimmy Wiener on drums. Also features material from a 10 inch album subtitled New Sounds From Boston – which is quite appropriate – as the soulfulness of the solos and the overall arrangements sound a good half-decade ahead of their time! Charlie's solos are terrific, but he's a generous leader – with plenty of space for standout moments by a group that features Joe Gordon on trumpet, Sonny Truitt on trombone, Jim Clark on tenor, George Myers on baritone, Glenn Glennon on drums, Jack Lawlor on bass, and Roy Frazee on piano. Includes 2 sessions masters each of Mariano's own "Boston Uncommon" and "The Wizard" – plus "Tzoris" and "Autumn In New York". Also includes "Mariners" and "Aviary" – the former in a sextet setting and the latter a quintet. LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Max Roach's most experimental albums from the 50s – a set of serious compositional works performed in conjunction with the Boston Percussion Ensemble. The feel is very much in the mode of 20th century classical work, such as the recordings in the 60s by the Percussions Of Strasbourg – with a wide variety of percussion instruments used on the set, and Roach's drums at the center. Titles include "The Music Inn Suite", "Evolution", and "Variations On A Familiar Theme" – all written by Harold Farberman, who directs the group. LP, Vinyl record album

Universal, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 21.99
The first-known recordings of the young Aerosmith – pulled from the group's own vaults, and issued here for the first time! The sound of the group is already strongly in place, and you'll know some of these cuts from their first studio album – but the versions here have a quality that's even more raw and urgent, and a sound that's pretty darn mindblowing! The material was all recorded in October of 1971, in the group's Boston home turf – and titles include "Reefer Head Woman", "Movin Out", "Major Barbara", "Dream On", "Mama Kin", "Somebody", and "Walkin The Dog". Late 60s psyche pop on Atco from Bo Grumpus – a Boston group who only ever cut this one LP that we know of – and it's a groovy one! The sound has kind of tight pop combo groove with catchy melodies – fleshed out into trippier territory with some keys, trumpet, and overall bigger arrangements – some of which was done by Felix Pappalardi, who would go onto to bigger things with Mountain! Titles include "Sparrow Tune", "Think Twice", "Yesterday's Street", "The Breath O'Love", "A Knowing Young Touch", "Ragtimey Love", "Travelin In The Dark", "Brooklyn", "The Moon Will Rise" and "If I Came To You". Donald ByrdByrd's Eye View (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99 On May 3, 2024
A wailer! This rare 1955 album is one of Donald Byrd's first records as a leader – recorded for the tiny Transition label in Boston, but with a hardbop groove that's right up there with his early work for Savoy and Blue Note. The record is practically a Jazz Messengers session – as it features Art Blakey on drums, Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass – and it's also got the unique aspect of a two-trumpet frontline, as the young Joe Gordon joins Donald on the instrument for the session. Tracks are long and open-ended – with incredibly well-crafted playing that really keeps the set fresh, despite the young age of Donald at the time. Titles include "El Sino", "Doug's Blues", "Hank's Tune", and "Hank's Other Tune". LP, Vinyl record album

Wilbur De ParisWilbur De Paris At Symphony Hall ... LP
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good ... $4.99
Wilbur DeParis may be working at Symphony Hall in Boston, but the sound here is pure New Orleans jazz all the way through – played in a tight small combo setting that features Wilbur on both slide and valve trombone, alongside Sidney DeParis on cornet, Omer Simeon on clarinet, Sonny White on piano, and Bennie Moten on bass! The hall gives a nicely echoey feel to the performance – almost an audio quality that's more vintage than the date of the recording – although all players come through with great clarity overall. Drummer Wilbert Kirk also plays a bit of harmonica – and titles include "Banjoker", "Sister Kate", "Cielito Lindo", "Farewell Blues", and "Juba Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Webster LewisGive Me Some Emotion – The Epic Anthology 1976 to 1981 ... LP
Epic/Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99 39.99
The hands of Webster Lewis are on a classic Fender Rhodes on the cover – and you'll hear plenty of that instrument on this collection, along with all the other many keyboards that Lewis can handle so well! Webster started out as a straighter jazzman in his early years, but by the time of these tracks he was at the top of his game in the world of soulful fusion – picking up a torch first lit by Herbie Hancock and Ramsey Lewis, and blending it with more influences from soul music too – which means that in addition to great keyboard solos from Lewis, you'll also hear wonderful vocals on most of these cuts – a key element that really helped Webster cross over into so many worlds at the time. As with work from the same period by Patrice Rushen, there's a sublime blend going on here – one that still sounds tremendous all these many years later, and which is presented with a great selection of cuts – including the rare "Japanese Umbrella" and "Boston" – plus "El Bobo", "Barbara Ann", "Hideaway", "Give Me Some Emotion", "Dancer", "Do It With Style", "Let Me Be The One", "Touch My Love", "Reach Out", "Love Won't Harm No One", and "There's A Happy Feeling". Shadows Of KnightBack Door Men ... LP
Dunwich, 1966. Good ... $9.99
A fuzzy, freaked-out classic from one of the coolest groups to work on the Chicago scene of the 60s – the mighty Shadows Of Knight, easily one of the best garage acts of their time! The album's got a raw power that's undeniable – a gritty sound that almost beats the Boston, Texas, and Sunset Strip scenes at their own game – as sharp guitars, weird Hammond, and plenty of feedback come together to blow away the listener right from the start – all with a sound that's a lot more heady than the group's better-known "Gloria" hit, with a far-reaching vibe that makes us wish these guys had kept on recording a few more years longer – because they might have given some of the best European psych acts a real run for their money! Titles include "Bad Little Woman", "The Behemoth", "Three For Love", "Peepin & Hidin", "Gospel Zone", "High Blood Pressure", and "Tomorrow's Going To Be Another Day". LP, Vinyl record album
(Pink label stereo pressing. Cover has staining & waviness on the bottom half. Vinyl has a mark that clicks throughout "Bad Little Woman" and "Gospel Zone".)

A record with a sound that's as swirly as its cover – a record that's loaded to the brim with fuzzy guitar and dreamy organ lines – and served up in a style that makes the whole thing one of the most treasured albums from the short-lived psych years on Mainstream Records! The group hail from Boston, but they've almost got the heady sound of some of the trippiest Texas groups of the period – effortlessly mixing garagey grit with heavier psychedelic elements – on titles that include "Trip To The Zoo", "Please Don't Set Me Free", "The Flight", "Mommy & Daddy", "Symphonic Psychedelia", "Crystalescent Heaven", and "One More Heartache". And heck, even their cover of "Gloria" is pretty darn wild! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Doug WatkinsWatkins At Large (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99 On June 7, 2024
A great session – and one of the few lost ones on the legendary Transition label! The album was originally recorded in Boston in 1956, and it features a group led by bassist Doug Watkins, with Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Art Taylor on drums – really a Blue Note lineup, if you come to think of it – and the album's definitely got a Blue Note vibe overall! Mobley's tenor is always a treat, and brings out a new sort of fire in Byrd's young horn – and Watkins, who didn't always work as a leader, has a hip conception that really keeps things interesting – a slight exotic undercurrent amidst the hardbop. Tracks are long, and titles include "More Of the Same", "Return To Paradise", "Panonica", and "Phinupi". LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not The Cars' first album, but the one that definitely catapulted them from Boston underground to mainstream fame – quite a surprise, given the style that most of the bigger acts were laying down at the time! And of course, we say that from the more mainstream bent of our American market – where punk had yet to penetrate the radio and other outlets – which made the new wave sounds of The Cars a surprisingly strong tilt in a more contemporary direction for both major labels and broadcast radio. All these many years later, the group's elevated to classic rock status, but that's only because of the strength of the songs – a classic lineup that includes "Let's Go", "Candy O", "Night Spots", "You Can't Hold On Too Long", "Got A Lot On My Head", "It's All I Can Do", and "Since I Held You". A well-remembered classic from The Cars – one of those records that had the group finding a perfect way to tap into new wave energy from the underground, yet somehow manage to score some major hits at a time when American radio was still pretty shy of so many new sounds! This set still has the group pretty close to their Boston roots – commercial, but never too polished – and in addition to the title hit "Shake It Up", other tracks include "Think It Over", "Since You're Gone", "I'm Not The One", "Victim Of Love", "This Could Be Love", and "A Dream Away". ✨✧ Dexter GordonPower (Tower Of Power/More Power) ... LP
Prestige, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of great American albums from Dexter Gordon – back to back in a single set! First up is Tower Of Power – recorded at a time when Dexter Gordon certainly was a tower of power – as his lengthy 60s stay in Europe helped him to work work work, and season his playing considerably – to a point at which he emerged as a masterful soloist far beyond the limits of his early bop recordings! This session features Dexter back with an American group – one that features Barry Harris on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums – plus a very welcome James Moody on tenor on one track, "Monmartre", blowing in that raspier tone of the late 60s we love so much! Other titles include "Stanley The Steamer", "The Rainbow People", and "Those Were The Days" – all nice and long! More Power is one of Dex's few great group sessions from the late 60's. Unlike a lot of other records from the time – in which he solos long and meanderingly with a piano trio backing him up, on standards he's played a million times – this one has him playing with a tight group that includes James Moody, Barry Harris, Buster Williams, and Albert Heath, on a set of nice original material with titles like "Fried Bananas", "Boston Bernie", and "Sticky Wicket". There's also 2 jazz standards – "Lady Bird" and "Meditation" – but they're both taken in a nice tight way, and in keeping with the rest of the album. LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s issue. Cover has some ring and edge wear, bumped corner at the bottom of the spine, and is bent at the top left corner.)

AJP/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most tripped-out albums of funk you'll ever buy – a rare treasure with a very unusual history! The Stark Reality were a cool little combo formed to work on public television in Boston in the late 60s – and the combo featured some heavy guitars, fuzzed-up vibes, and some monster percussion laid out in tight bass and drum rhythms that were years ahead of their time! The group recorded one rare album – ostensibly a children's record, but based around old compositions by Hoagy Carmichael, completely pulled apart, sliced up, overly harmonized, and spat out into wild funky tunes that bear no resemblance to their originals! John Abercrombie handles the guitar, Monty Stark delivers the vibes and vocals – and titles include "Rocket Ship", "Shooting Star", "Bustin Out Of Doors", "Comrades", "Swing High", "Cooking", "Grandfather Clock", "The Old Prospector", "The Whale", "Junkman's Song", and "Merry Go Round". Elektra, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great debut LP by a near-forgotten act that blossomed briefly at the end of the 60s folk-rock boom – and deserve more than sidebar status in the book of modern music history! Earth Opera incorporated many styles into a sound that may not seem uncommon today, but was idiosyncrastic and unique in it's day, and still sounds great! The group was born from the collaboration of Peter Rowan and a young David Grisman, who recruited the rest of the members from the Boston Be-In and built an east coast take on the sounds that were sweeping California in the mid and late 60s. There's some nice jazzy influence creeping in to the bands singer/songwriter-plus vibe, with 10 songs in all, including "The Red Sox Are Winning", "As It Is Before", "Dreamless", "To Care At All", "Home OF The Brave", "The child Bride", "Close Your Eyes & Shut The Door", "Time & Again", "When You Were Full Of Wonder", and "Death By Fire". ✨✧ Charlie MarianoCharlie Mariano ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Insanely wonderful early work from Charlie Mariano – some of the freshest, cleanest alto sax work of its time – blown with a tone and sense of soul that goes way beyond some of Mariano's contemporaries at the time! The album was recorded for Bethlehem Records, and is relatively straight – but Charlie already shows a sense of complexity in his presentation that hints at all the greatness to come – and which bursts out here with some refreshing energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle. Charlie's tone is impeccable – somewhere between Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker, with that back bay Boston blend of soul and modernism, making the city one of the best scenes for alto players in the 50s – and he gets some strong rhythm support from the trio of John Williams on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Titles include "Blues", "Floormat", "I Heard You Cried Last Night", "Johnny One Note", and "King For A Day". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul Butterfield Blues BandGot A Mind To Give Up Living – Live 1966 ... LP
Real Gone, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Unreleased live material from the legendary Paul Butterfield Blues Band – heard here at a time when the mighty Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield were in the group on guitar! The set was recorded in a coffee house in Boston in 1966, but the recording vibe makes the whole thing feel a lot more like it was set in the kind of southside club that first inspired Paul on the Chicago scene – with a surprisingly faithful representation of the group's sound, complete with a wonderful amount of grit – both in the grooves, and on the guitar, and even in the fuzzy sound of the vocals! Butterfield sings lead, and plays harmonica – and the combo also features organ, bass, and drums. Titles include a sweet funky take on "Get Out Of My Life Woman" – plus "Look Over Yonders Wall", "Born In Chicago", "Walking By Myself", "Memory Pain", "One More Heartache", and "Never Say No". ✨✧ Donald ByrdByrd's Eye View ... LP
Transition, 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock

✨✧ Serge ChaloffBlue Serge ... LP
Capitol, 1956. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real classic in the canon of American postwar jazz – one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by Boston baritone player Serge Chaloff – one of a handful of musicians who really helped move the instrument forward in jazz, and help it take a rightful place next to the expressiveness of the tenor and alto sax! Even though he hardly got a chance to record, Serge was a hell of a player, and one who has both the rich tone of the instrument completely in hand, while also able to move with the fluidity of a much leaner horn – a quality that's augmented here by the fantastic rhythm work from Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The set's a treasure through and through – from the cool cover image, to the great music within – served up on tunes that include "How About You", "Handful Of Stars", "The Goof & I", "Susie's Blues", and "All The Things You Are". What we once thought might've been a short-lived, if rewarding east coast team up of Wu Tang's Inspectah Deck and Boston heroes 7L & Esoteric has gone on to be one of the longest running later career supergroups this side of Run The Jewels! Old and mid school styled funky/sci-fi/vintage comic book style like we haven't heard since Doom left us, paired with some icey cool bits of synth and other and fresh touches on the production side – nicely setting up Deck's rhymes, still spitting sharp and smart after all these years. The rare folksy psychedelic solo set from Tommy Flanders of the Blues Project – a fairly stripped down, acoustic guitar and misty-eyed vocals led set of tunes. Moonstone is fairly straight forward singer songwriter record in some ways, with lovelorn lyrics and laidback arrangements – but it has flashes of out there mysticism. The LA session players are impeccable, too! Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "Blue Water Blue", "Morning Misty Eyes", "Purple And Blue", "Moonstone", "By The Mailbox We Stood", "Angel Of Mercy", "Boston Girls", "Sleepin'", "She's My Love" and more. ✨✧ Friend & LoverReach Out Of The Darkness ... LP
Verve/Forecast, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One hit wonders – but oh what a hit! Friend & Lover's "Reach Out Of The Darkness" is a really unique little tune that brings together folksy vocals and funky rhythms – a solid jammer that brushed off the cobwebs of the aging folk scene of the 60s, and sprung into the charts with a trippy groove that still sounds great today! The rest of the record has a really similar feel – much heavier bass and drums than the usual folk outing, creating a sound that's nicely funky on some of the best numbers, and always groovy on all the others. Vocals are by "Friend" Jim Post and "Lover" Cathy Conn – harmonizing together nicely – and titles include "Reach Out Of The Darkness", "Saturday's Hero", "Zig Zag", "Boston Is A Lovely Town", "I'm A Woman I'm A Man", "Ode To A Dandelion", and "If Love Is In Your Heart". Spring, 1979/1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
This album seems to have been recorded between 1979 and 1980 in Boston, New York and at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. Bass player and vocalist Busta Jones gives us a batch of songs that incorporate a lot of the early 80s pop sound – some robot/space sounds, some danceable numbers and one definite disco-y tune. Side two seems to have more to offer – some solid good pop songs. Jones wrote most of the songs and he does a good version of Stevie Wonder's "Just A Little Misunderstanding". Other tracks include "Superstar", "Impulse Reaction", "I Put A Rush On You", "Everybody's Dancing All Over The World", and "You Keep Making Me Hot". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
This album was the 7th in the Contemporary series of "Shelly Manne & His Men", but it's also easily the best, and features some of the most exciting playing of any of Manne's groups. The success of the whole album comes down to Charlie Mariano, who wrote a large number of the tracks, and who's at the height of his powers on alto here – hitting a beautiful mix of icy modernism and Boston soul, in the tradition of some of his best Bethlehem recordings. Side one features an extended work called "The Gambit", which has a nice blend of far-reaching soloing and tight jazzy rhythm. Other titles include "Blue Gnu", "Hugo Hurwhey", and "Tom Brown's Buddy" – and players include Stu Williamson and Russ Freeman. LP, Vinyl record album

Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant early work from Charlie Mariano – key proof of his genius, and one of the main albums we'd recommend by him! The album has Charlie coming of his years in the Boston scene – boppish at some level, but blowing with a raspy soulfulness that really opens up his horn into new territory – not Charlie Parker, not Lee Konitz, but a whole new space and sound of expression for the alto sax! The group features Stu Williamson on trumpet and Frank Rosolino on trombone – both players who bring a slight west coast feel to the record, but never in too-cool ways that dampen Mariano's sound! Titles include "Green Walls", "Chloe", "Manteca", "S'Nice", "You Go To My Head", and "Give A Little Whistle". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John MayallJazz Blues Fusion ... LP
Polydor, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The title certainly gets it right – as the album definitely brings a bit of jazz into the mix for the great John Mayall – given that the set features strong work from funky jazz heavyweights Blue Mitchell on trumpet and Freddy Robinson on guitar! Both are musicians that we love for their late 60s records on their own, and they work mighty nicely here with Mayall in a live setting – alongside heavy saxes from Clifford Solomon, and lots of great guitar, harmonica, and piano from John Mayall himself! The style is still more blues than jazz, but definitely shows an expanding style past the more slavish roots of Mayall's early years – especially reflecting his new interaction with the American scene after the breakup of the Blues Breakers. The first side of the album features a live set from Boston – and includes "Country Road", "Mess Around", "Good Time Boogie", and "Change Your Ways" – side two is from New York shows, and features three longish tracks – "Dry Throat", "Exercise In C Major", and "Got To Be This Way". ✨✧ Serge ChaloffFable Of Mable (10 inch LP) ... LP
Storyville, 1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Very hip work from the Boston modern scene of the mid 50s! The album's one of Serge Chaloff's few as a leader – and is much harder to find than his more widely-issued work for Capitol – an obscure date for the Storyville label, and one that originally only circulated as a 10" LP! The set's also unusual in that it features Serge at the head of a nonet – with strong players that include Charlie Mariano on alto, Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, and Dick Twardzik on piano – all working wonderfully with Chaloff in a groove that's sharply modern, but also plenty darn swinging! There's a strong dose of Boston soul in the mix here, thanks to contributions from the horn players – and the album's got a freshness that's a nice contrast to Serge's more familiar work at Capitol. Titles include originals like "Sherry", "Slam", "A Salute To Tiny", and "Ennie Meenie Minor Mode" – written by group members Mariano and Twardzik! LP, Vinyl record album

Really wonderful work from the Boston scene of the 90s – material that was issued on rare 12" singles and cassette-only releases by this Roxbury duo – brought together here on a much-needed full length set! The material's got the same no-nonsense quality of the best Boston work of the period – straightforward, and completely unapologetic to the bigger cities turning out hit hop hop at the time – almost the same back to basics approach that made some of the city's interest in soul music so great in previous decades. Themes aim towards the darker side of the spectrum, but do a great job of avoiding thuggish cliches – on titles that include "Other Side Of Town", "Rendezvous", "No Doubt", "Heavily Armed", "ROX Land", "Big Ssan & Tann", "My Whole Team", and "Ask 4".
