BlockheadDowntown Science (CD with DVD) ... CD
Ninja Tune (Canada), 2005. Used CD & DVD ... $5.99
Another really strong effort from Blockhead – one that follows his equally good Music By Cavelight! It's feels like a tribute to NYC, in an atmospheric way, full of crackly melodies, terse moments, and compelling soundtracky hip hop beat craft. Tracks include "Expiration Date", "Roll Out The Red Carpet", "Serenade", "Cherry Picker", "Crashing Down", "Stop Motion Traffic", "Good Block Bad Block", "Dough Nation", "The First Snowfall" and "Long Walk Home". Includes a bonus DVD of experimental film accompaniment to Blockhead's music from Music By Cavelight LP – 3 1/2 hours worth of footage! CD

✨✧ VariousNext Stop Soweto Vol 2 – Soul, Funk, & Organ Grooves From The Townships 1969 to 1976 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The next set in the stellar Next Stop Soweto series from Strut Records – highlighting rare South African sounds – this one infused with the western party music influences of funk, soul and organ drenched grooves of all kinds! Volume 1 in the series concentrated on the lively township jive sounds, this one gets gritty and funky – American funk, soul and R&B drenched organ grooves are more prominent in the sound – combining with regional traditions masterfully and coming out feverish and ready for the dancefloor! Includes material from the small, but exciting South African soul scene by groups The Klooks and The Anchors, mbaqanga numbers liberally infused with soul and funk by the Mgababa Queens and Mahotella Queens, jazzier funk from The Heshoo Beshoo Group and much more! 22 tracks in all: "Khubani" by JK Mayengani & The Shingwedzi Sisters, "Blockhead" by The Monks, Nkuli's Shuffle" by The Klooks, "Come With Me" and "Funky Message" by The Heroes, "Last Time" by The Anchors, "I Am There" by The Grasshopers, "Saduva" by Gibson Kente, "Wozani Mahipi" by Mahotella Queens and more. Ian Dury & The BlockheadsDo It Yourself (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Stiff (Japan), 1979. Used ... $9.99
One of the great ones from Ian Dury – a record that goes way beyond simple quirky rock, and explodes with some wonderful jazzy touches! The sound here is totally great – very much in the sway of Chaz Jankel's musical direction, and filled with great bits on sax, keyboards, and guitar that have a fair bit more warmth and soul than Dury's original records. There's actually less standout hits here – but that's ok, because the record has a really unified feel overall – strongly in the funky arty dancefloor mode that you might expect from some of the Ze Records camp. Titles include "Dance Of The Screamers", "Inbetweenies", "Quiet", "Sink My Boats", "Don't Ask Me", "This Is What We Find", and "Uneasy Sunny Day Hotsy Totsy". CD
(Out of print.)
