✨✧ Charles MingusBlack Saint & The Sinner Lady ... LP
Impulse/Superior Viaduct, 1963. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic – and one of Mingus' greatest albums ever! This one ranks right up with The Clown and Pithecantropus Erectus for sheer raw power and emotion – and Mingus' writing here is incredibly tight, giving soloists like Charlie Mariano, Jaki Byard, Richard Williams, and Jerome Richardson a real workout. The set's an extended suite of tracks with sort of a semi-ballet form. Don't let this fool you into thinking that the work's some sort of semi-classical snoozer, though – as Mingus uses the structure to hit some brilliant raw emotion, and the "dance" part of the piece gives the work a tight rhythmic form, pushing the soloists into raw urgent grooves, of a nature that never show up on Mingus' other work from the time. Titles include "Trio & Group Dancers", "Solo Dancer", "Group & Solo Dance", and "Duet Solo Dancers". Quite hard to find on the original vinyl, too – which is why we're extra-excited to have it on CD! (Great pressing, too – very heavy cover and excellent format – almost like owning an original!)

John CarterDauwhe ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99
Richly complicated work from reedman John Carter – working here at a level that's a great change from his smaller combo work of the early years! Carter plays clarinet throughout – at the head of an octet with a very cerebral feel – a group who almost bring more of a serious music sort of style into play at times, yet still have enough jazz-based energy in their work too. The approach is a bit like that of Muhal Richard Abrams or Henry Threadgill – but the set also has a definite LA underground bent too, thanks to work by Bobby Bradford on cornet, Red Callender on tuba, James Newton on flutes, Charles Owen on soprano sax, Roberto Miranda on bass, William Jeffrey on drums, and Luis Peralta on waterphone and percussion. Titles include "Dauwhe", "Enter From The East", "Soft Dance", "The Mating Ritual", and "Ode To The Flower Maiden". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Clark Memorial QuartetVoodoo ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99
A seminal album from the 80s New York scene – not only because it brought some long-overdue attention to Sonny Clark (whose records were mostly out of print at the time), but also because it reminded the world that John Zorn could blow hardbop! The album features a set of classic Clark originals from the glory days of his Blue Note years – recast here by Zorn on alto sax, and a quartet that also features Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Ray Drummond on bass, and Bobby Previte on drums. The energy's different than an older Sonny Clark record, but the sound is still plenty darn great – and titles include "Sonia", "Voodoo", "Sonny's Crib", "Nicely", "Minor Meeting", and "Cool Struttin". ✨✧ Archie SheppSea Of Faces ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little set from Archie Shepp – one of his strongest of the 70s, and a real return to the kind of spiritual jamming he was doing at the end of his time with Impulse Records! The album's well-known for it's great track "Song For Mozambique" – a spare and righteous number that features Bunny Fox singing in a sweet spiritual mode, while Charles Greenlee and Shepp recite chants over the jamming grooves of the band. Fox also sings on the mellow and soulful "I Know Bout The Life", and the Shepp group picks up a straight but hard mode on Cal Massey's great track "Lookin For Someone To Love". The extended jammer "Hipnosis" takes up all of side one – and it's a great little groover that builds nicely with a comping rhythm, yet which gives the band some nice room to solo in an exploratory fashion. The cut's written by Grachan Moncur III, and has Charles Greenlee blowing trombone in Grachan's place! LP, Vinyl record album

Doug HammondFolks ... LP
Idibib/Manufactured, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A lasting classic from drummer Doug Hammond – maybe one of his most widely-circulated records, even though the whole set is still relatively obscure! That doesn't stop the music from being great, though – and the whole thing is a great bridge between the New York loft jazz years of the 70s, where Doug was a key performer – and some of the later soulful styles of jazz expression that would flourish in the 80s – a kind of new confidence brought back to the mainstream, with subtle messages really creating power in the music! Much of the record is more inside than you might expect, but still swings with a real edge – very much in the early 80s spirit of Black Saint/Soul Note – and Hammond works with a very cool shifting lineup of musicians, which creates a special flavor for each track on the set. Musicians include Marvin Blackman on alto and tenor, Hubert Eaves on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Byard Lancaster on alto, Karen Joseph on flute, and Muneer Abdul Fataah on cello – and the record features vocal performances from both Bessie Carter and Angie Bofill – the later of whom is a real surprise on a record like this. Titles include "Togetherness", "What's Happening Now", "Folks", "Perspicuity", "Pony Pone", and "Kone Pone". LP, Vinyl record album
