Charles MingusBlack Saint & The Sinner Lady ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1963. Used ... $5.99
Fantastic – and one of Mingus' greatest albums ever! This one ranks right up with The Clown and Pithecantropus Erectus for sheer raw power and emotion – and Mingus' writing here is incredibly tight, giving soloists like Charlie Mariano, Jaki Byard, Richard Williams, and Jerome Richardson a real workout. The set's an extended suite of tracks with sort of a semi-ballet form. Don't let this fool you into thinking that the work's some sort of semi-classical snoozer, though – as Mingus uses the structure to hit some brilliant raw emotion, and the "dance" part of the piece gives the work a tight rhythmic form, pushing the soloists into raw urgent grooves, of a nature that never show up on Mingus' other work from the time. Titles include "Trio & Group Dancers", "Solo Dancer", "Group & Solo Dance", and "Duet Solo Dancers". CD

✨✧ Max RoachComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note Vol 2 (Pictures In A Frame/In The Light/Live At Vielharmonie/Scott Free/Easy Winners/Christmas Again) (6CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1980s. Used 6 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Drummer Max Roach was really on fire during the 80s – a time when the Black Saint/Soul Note label gave his music more exposure than ever, and allowed Max to try out so many great concepts with a new sense of freedom! Roach first came up during the early years of bebop, exploded with righteous power in the 60s, and sometimes never got the presence he deserved in the 70s – when some of his best work was only recorded in Japan. These records really correct that lack of wider presentation of Max's music – and the titles here show an especially strong focus on expanding the spiritual ideas that Roach recorded with his bass-less Quartet in the decade before. The quartet appears strongly on the albums Pictures In A Frame, Scott Free, and In The Light – which feature Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Odean Pope on tenor, and Calvin Hill on piano. Most of these players show up on the other albums too – including Easy Winners and Live At Vielharmonie Munich – with his Double Quartet, which takes the Quartet and expands it with a string quartet. The set also features the beautiful It's Christmas Again – a nicely spiritual set with work from Bridgewater, Pope, Tony Scott, Lee Konitz, and Tyrone Brown. 6 albums in all – each in tiny LP-styled sleeves! Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/Early 90s. Used 4 CDs ... $39.99
Tremendous work from Mal Waldron – four later albums that have him hitting a whole new level of power! Waldron's always been a compelling artist – from his 50s hardbop work to his 60s modern moments to his rich array of overseas recordings in the 70s. But on these 80s sides for Black Saint/Soul Note, he takes off in a rich new direction – one that's stepped in the sort of spiritual modes that other American players were using in the 70s, touched with some of Waldron's more creative, complex approaches to jazz! The lineup on these records is all great – with stellar reed work from either Sonny Fortune, Ricky Ford, or Charlie Rouse – and trumpet by the great Woody Shaw on two of the dates – plus bass by Reggie Workman, and drums from Eddie Moore and Ed Blackwell. Tracks are very long on most records – lots of hard-burning, stretched-out, all-soul solos that are mighty nice! Includes the full albums The Git Go, Seagulls Of Kristiansund, Crowd Scene, and Where Are You – packed in small LP-styled sleeves. CD

✨✧ Archie SheppComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note (Sea Of Faces/Down Home New York/Little Red Moon/California Meeting) (4CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1975/1984/1985. Used 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A relatively small slice of the long and storied career of tenorist Archie Shepp – but a great one too, and a set of records that marks some of Shepp's more spiritual modes at the time! The package might well be worth it alone for the classic Sea Of Faces – a great little set from Archie Shepp – one of his strongest of the 70s, and a real return to the kind of spiritual jamming he was doing at the end of his time with Impulse Records! The album's well-known for it's great track "Song For Mozambique" – a spare and righteous number that features Bunny Fox singing in a sweet spiritual mode, while Charles Greenlee and Shepp recite chants over the jamming grooves of the band. Fox also sings on the mellow and soulful "I Know Bout The Life", and the Shepp group picks up a straight but hard mode on Cal Massey's great track "Lookin For Someone To Love". The extended jammer "Hipnosis" takes up all of side one – and it's a great little groover that builds nicely with a comping rhythm, yet which gives the band some nice room to solo in an exploratory fashion. Down Home New York is an overlooked killer from Archie Shepp – a set that almost recalls some of the spiritual moments of his later Impulse work, and which definitely has him moving past some of the straighter sounds of this period in his career! Things are never too outside or free, but there's a balance with straightness that's really great – so that when the rhythms are gentle, Archie might really take off in an edgey solo – or when the grooves have more force, he might hang inside with a soulful core energy, holding the whole group together. There's some great use of electric bass on the date – played by Saheb Sarbib – and other players include Charles McGhee on trumpet, Ken Warner on piano, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Players vocalize a bit at times – in an older Shepp way – and titles include "Down Home New York", "May 16th", "Down Home New York", "Straight Street", and "The 4th World". Little Red Moon features some nicely spiritual currents too – with a group that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet – on titles that include "Naima", "Impromptu", "Whisper Not", and "Little Red Moon". California Meeting is a live set from the west coast – featuring some very long tracks with George Cables on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Eddie Marshall on drums – plus bluesman Royal Blue on one track too. All four albums come in a box, in tiny recor-style sleeves! CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsColors In Thirty-Third ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1986. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Plenty of colors here – a classic 80s recording from Muhal Richard Abrams, of the sort that showed him to be one of the most focused, expressive members of the AACM at the time! The core group features John Purcell on saxes, Dave Holland on cello, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – and John Blake plays violin on a few numbers, and Holland switches to bass on two tracks too. The sound is more stripped down than some of Abrams' other recordings – quite spacious and introspective at times, really showing the sensitive side of his music, and reminding us that he can be a very soulful improviser, when he gives himself the chance. Titles include "Miss Ricarda", "Munktmunk", "Soprano Song", "Piano Cello Song", "Colors In Thirty Third", and "Introspection". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic record – and one of the warmest, most soulful sets we've ever heard from Muhal Richard Abrams! The album features Muhal's piano alongside the bass of Malachi Favors – a really unique duo outing that unlocks a whole new side of both players, especially Favors, who really seems to have a presence here that's different than usual – a bubbling, effervescent sense of soul that really buoys up the whole record, and helps Abrams hit these beautifully lyrical tones on the piano. We can't recommend this one highly enough, and the tracks include "W.W. (Dedicated to Wilbur Ware)", "JG", "Way Way Way Down Yonder", "Unity", and "Two Over One". CD

John CarterDauwhe ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99
Richly complicated work from reedman John Carter – working here at a level that's a great change from his smaller combo work of the early years! Carter plays clarinet throughout – at the head of an octet with a very cerebral feel – a group who almost bring more of a serious music sort of style into play at times, yet still have enough jazz-based energy in their work too. The approach is a bit like that of Muhal Richard Abrams or Henry Threadgill – but the set also has a definite LA underground bent too, thanks to work by Bobby Bradford on cornet, Red Callender on tuba, James Newton on flutes, Charles Owen on soprano sax, Roberto Miranda on bass, William Jeffrey on drums, and Luis Peralta on waterphone and percussion. Titles include "Dauwhe", "Enter From The East", "Soft Dance", "The Mating Ritual", and "Ode To The Flower Maiden". LP, Vinyl record album

Heady stuff from trombonist George Lewis – hardly the bebop outing you might expect from the title, and instead a set of complicated work that's heavily in the AACM tradition! Side one features "Blues" – an investigation of older blues harmonics, but done in a very freeform, experimental way – with tenor trombone from Lewis, piano from Anthony Davis, bass clarinet from Doug Ewart, and moog from Richard Teitelbaum. "Homage To Charles Parker" is an equally open sort of track – very spare and textural at times, which provides a beautiful showcase for Lewis' trombone! CD

The album features a set of classic Clark originals from the glory days of his Blue Note years – recast here by Zorn on alto sax, and a quartet that also features Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, Ray Drummond on bass, and Bobby Previte on drums. Sun Ra's made the move here from Egyptian pyramids to Mayan temples – but the sound is every bit as cosmic and compelling as ever! The album's one of Ra's last – a studio set recorded in Italy in 1990, and one that draws strongly from the tightening of tradition the Arkestra experienced in the 80s – working at a time of some of their greatest acceptance by jazz audiences worldwide, and able to express themselves fully in a range of different modes! The sense of tone and timing here is beautiful – almost Ellington-like at points, but still with a decidedly Sun Ra-like quality – and players on the date include Michael Ray and Ahmed Abdullah on trumpets, John Gilmore on tenor, Noel Scott and Marshall Allen on alto sax, and Tyrone Hill on trombone – and June Tyson also sings just a bit on the set. Ra plays both piano and synth, and titles include "Alone Together", "Discipline 1", "Sunset On The River Nile", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "I'll Never Be The Same", "Theme On The Stargazers", and "Opus In Springtime". One of the best-remembered Anthony Braxton albums from the 80s – and for good reason too, as there's a strength to the record that's evident from the very first note! The quartet here features longtime collaborator George Lewis on trombone, bassist John Lindberg, and percussionist Gerry Hemingway – the last of whom really rattles some creative energy into the record. Lewis and Braxton provide excellent foils for one another – balancing abstract left brain streams with phrasing that alludes to an approach that hasn't forgotten the jazz tradition. Jimmy McGriffBlack & Blues ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual double-length album for Jimmy McGriff – released during his funkier years at the Groove Merchant label, but with a gritty sort of sound that takes us back to his first few records on Sue in the 60s! The "blues" in the title is definitely well-chosen – as the tracks here are long, lean, and drawn out – blues-drenched soul jazz played by a small combo that includes Larry Frazier on guitar, Rudy Johnson on tenor, and Saint Jenkins on drums – plus Gerry Jemmott on electric bass, adding a bit more vamp to the background than usual. There's a very earthy feel to most numbers – almost improvised jams at times, at least on the tracks that are credited to McGriff as the writer. Titles include "Blue Groove (parts 1 & 2)", "Blues For A Broken Down Funky Old Bus", "Bahama", "Mack The Knife", "Harp-er", "Mocha", "Hey Mrs Jones", "Amen", and "Penthouse Serenade". CD

Doug HammondFolks ... LP
Idibib/Manufactured, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A lasting classic from drummer Doug Hammond – maybe one of his most widely-circulated records, even though the whole set is still relatively obscure! That doesn't stop the music from being great, though – and the whole thing is a great bridge between the New York loft jazz years of the 70s, where Doug was a key performer – and some of the later soulful styles of jazz expression that would flourish in the 80s – a kind of new confidence brought back to the mainstream, with subtle messages really creating power in the music! Much of the record is more inside than you might expect, but still swings with a real edge – very much in the early 80s spirit of Black Saint/Soul Note – and Hammond works with a very cool shifting lineup of musicians, which creates a special flavor for each track on the set. Musicians include Marvin Blackman on alto and tenor, Hubert Eaves on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Byard Lancaster on alto, Karen Joseph on flute, and Muneer Abdul Fataah on cello – and the record features vocal performances from both Bessie Carter and Angie Bofill – the later of whom is a real surprise on a record like this. Buddah, 1974. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Transition is right – as the cover has Barbara floating above a Curtis Mayfield-ish scene of drugs, war, gambling, and Satan – a really righteous image that beautifully sums up the vibe of the record! The set was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philly – with excellent arrangements from Norman Harris, Richard Rome, and Bobby Eli – who all bring in a slight blacksploitation vibe to match the image on the cover – easily the funkiest setting that Barbara Mason ever had! But the real star here is the lady herself – who's pushed herself beyond the little girl soul themes of a few years before, to take on a host of societal issues with a surprisingly righteous vibe – mostly on tracks she penned herself. The song titles sum up lots of the energy of the record – and include "World in a Crisis", "Trigger Happy People", "The Devil is Busy", "Sunday Saint (Weekday Sinner)", "Half Sister Half Brother", and "Time Is Running Out". Things are very loose and free – and the pair perform live, improvising some amazing sounds between McPhee's alto and pocket trumpet, and Zerang's always-creative work on the regular drum kit – used here with a wide pastiche of sounds that perfectly matches Joe's post-musical tones on his instruments.
