The setting is the Golden Gate, but the sound is pure Philly International – a rare early live performance from the label, featuring some of its key vocal heavyweights working here with live accompaniment from MFSB! Although the instrumental group backed Philly artists often in the studio, this 1973 concert marks the only time they worked live with the singers – in a stunning showcase for the young label, performed as part of a Columbia Records convention in San Francisco! Given the setting, and the uniqueness of the whole event, the release of this rare material is a treasure for soul fans of many generations – a rare addition to the amazing run of music the label first started giving us at the time. The set begins with MFSB doing a version of "Freddie's Dead" – then runs into Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes singing "I Miss You", "The Love I Lost", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" – followed by Three Degrees on "I Didn't Know" and "Dirty Ol Man". The first set is a live Billy Strayhorn date – recorded with a group that includes Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves on reeds, Harold Baker and Clark Terry on trumpets, and Quentin Jackson on trombone. Next up is Jazz From Abroad – an incredible early work from British leader Johnny Dankworth – jazz work that's as fluid and grooving as his best 60s soundtrack sessions, and cut with an early sense of power that's really great! Dankworth's tight on the head arrangements, really leaping into the rhythms of the tune with the same love of groove as contemporary Johnny Keating – but he also makes some strong solo space on the best tracks on the album, really letting the sax players in the group stretch out searingly. In fact, the album contains work from 2 different sessions that filtered over to the Squares album – one that featured Mobley with Freddie Hubbard, Barry Harris, Paul Chambers, and Billy Higgins; and another that included Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, Butch Warren, and Philly Joe Jones. A weird batch of groovy tracks from Diz – more of a pop soul jazz instrumental set than a straight jazz one, recorded in 1969 with arrangements by Jimmy Mundy, who conducts a group with Paul Griffin, Billy Butler, and Jerome Richardson. As usual, Dizzy rises to any occasion – and brings out some great work for the album, grooving in a number of different modes as the moods of the tracks change with the backing colors of the band. A fantastic underground set from the UK scene at the end of the 60s – the final record by The Deviants, who'd later go on to form the core of Pink Fairies – but who sound a lot weirder and wilder here! Part of that difference is lead singer Mick Farren, who also handled the production – which really does a lot with a little, and makes any of the group's guitar-heavy, blues-inspired licks sound stranger in the company of some of the odd effects and unusual vocal styles too. Make no mistake, there's plenty of fantastic guitar on the record – thanks to Paul Rudolph, who's completely searing at most moments – but Farren balances things out nicely with his touches too, on strange-titled songs that include "The Junior Narco Rangers", "Black George Does It With His Tongue", "Death Of A Dream Machine", "Metamorphosis Exploration", "Billy The Monster", and "Rumbling Black Transit Blues". A lost chapter in the career of cellist Fred Katz – an album recorded after his small combo work with Chico Hamilton, and sort of a larger group take on the whimsical sound of the classic Hamilton Quintet! The tracks are all older folk tunes, adapted by Katz to fit a chamber jazz mode – and featuring shifting instrumentation from track to track, in order to fit the African, American, or Jewish origins of the tunes. Although the concept may sound a bit gimmicky, the record's actually pretty darn great from a jazz perspective – and is one of the few to show the real depth of Katz as a leader! Players include Billy Bean on guitar, Gene Estes on vibes, Jack Costanzo on percussion, Pete Candoli on trumpet, and Paul Horn on flute and alto – all great talents for this sort of work, especially Horn, whose reed lines help keep things lively. The lineup is unusual – as Red is working with a group that features the great James Clay on flute and tenor, alongside Lorraine Geller on piano, and Billy Higgins on drums – and tracks are longer than usual for a Contemporary Records session – which gives Clay some moments to stretch out, spurred on by the lively drumming of Higgins.
