Henry ManciniBlues & The Beat ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good ... $5.99
This is a pretty jazzy record compared to the usual Mancini soundtrack-type stuff. It's mostly mellow the whole way through and has some very nice moments due to the quality of the playing. His orchestra includes such folks as Pete Condoli on trumpet, Dick Nash on trombone, Johnny Williams on piano, Victor Feldman on vibes & marimba and Larry Bunker on vibes. There is only one Mancini original – "The Beat" – and the others are jazz standards such as "Misty", "After Hours", "Mood Indigo", "Tippin In", "Sing, Sing, Sing", and "Big Noise From Winnetka". ✨✧ BandMusic From Big Pink ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Includes "Tears Of Rage", "In A Station", "The Weight", "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", "Lonesome Suzie", "This Wheels On Fire", "I Shall Be Released" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jazz CrusadersBest Of The Jazz Crusaders ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1960s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A sweet little set of some of the Jazz Crusaders' best sides from the 60s – a hip swinging selection of short, tight, and very well played soul jazz numbers – grooving hard in a way that was very big with the jukebox and jazz AM crowd! The set list features a good mix of originals and covers – all expertly played with a tightly snapping groove that never misses a beat. Titles include "The Young Rabbits", "Hey Jude", "Tough Talk", "It's Your Thing", "Freedom Sound", "Love & Peace", "The Thing", and "Ooga Boo Ga Loo". LP, Vinyl record album

Mirage/Atlantic, 1985. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Wow! This record takes all the directions that soul was heading towards in the early 80s, and wraps them into one record! System has it all – geri curls, bass pedal riffing, tinny synth drums, over-produced flanged-out vocals, and tinny but catchy little tunes that were designed to cross over with the "hot mix" crowd in a big way. Tracks include "It Takes 2", "Big City Beat", "I Don't Run From Danger", "My Radio Rocks", and "Did In By A Friend". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Patti LabelleWinner In You ... LP
MCA, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bit one for Patti Labelle in the 80s – a set that crossed over big at the time, but which still has the lady in very soulful territory! Patti seems to sparkle most here on the mellower cuts – the gentle groovers and laidback ballads that helped open her up to a whole new audience, and which really give her a different sound than her 70s Labelle years. Titles include the Bacharach/Carol Bayer Sager title "On My Own" – sung as a duet with Michael McDonald – plus "Oh People", "There's A Winner In You", "Finally We're Back Together", "Beat My Heart Like A Drum", "Kiss Away The Pain", "Something Special", and "You're Mine Tonight". ✨✧ Re-FlexPolitics Of Dancing ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Reflex never had much of a long recorded legacy – but they certainly made their mark with this classic album of 80s electro pop! The tunes follow somewhere in the territory of contemporaries like Human League or Ultravox, but also maybe have a quirkier vibe that's more in the spirit of the indie scene – especially in the ways the keyboard lines and vocals take on all these odd inflections – maybe a nod towards soulful styles, but also a mode that quickly fell out of favor overseas – but which is also what makes the whole thing so completely charming! Titles include the big title hit "The Politics Of Dancing" – and "Hitline", "Hurt", "Couldn't Stand A Day", "Jungle", "Sensitive", "Keep In Touch", "Praying To The Beat", and "Pointless". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some spots of peeling and stuck on paper in the bottom right corner of the cover.)

Amon Duul IIMade In Germany ... LP
Atco, 1975. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A big international record from Amon Duul – and for good reason, too – as the set's filled with catchy little tracks that have this really cool blend of prog and glam! The style's almost like Roxy Music at points – with the vocals all compressed in the guitars, and this sinister vibe in the instrumentation – played by a group who clearly know how to stretch out more, but instead pack a lot of experimentation into shorter, groovier space. The vocals are in English, but accented – which gives them a further offbeat vibe – and titles include "The King's Chocolate Waltz", "Emigrant Son", "La Krautoma", "Metropolis", "Gala Gnome", and "Mr Kraut's Jinx". LP, Vinyl record album

BlondieParallel Lines ... LP
Chrysalis, 1978. Very Good+ ... $16.99
The breakthrough album by Blondie! Parallel Lines is their third album overall, and having been released only 7 months after their second, you know they were hungry to break big – and they do it here with unbeatable cool. For as tight and bright as as the sound is, a trademark of producer Mike Chapman, there's still something of the raucous downtown energy here – and also some pretty great stylistic strides, such as the disco-aware smash "Heart Of Glass". Includes the equally classic "One Way Or Another" plus "Hanging On The Telephone", "Just Go Away", "I Know But I Don't Know" "Will Anything Happen", "Picture This", "11:59 and more. James IngramIt's Your Night ... LP
Quest, 1983. Sealed ... $4.99
Early crossover work as a solo act from James Ingram – and a set that features some stellar production from Quincy Jones! The album's one of the best of Q's pop-styled efforts of the time – and although it played big at the time, it's got a sound that's much better than we remember, especially on the more upbeat numbers – rock-solid vocals from Ingram, sung with a youthful quality that's nicely shies away from some of his more clunky commercial modes. Titles include the big hit "Yah Mo B There", plus "She Loves Me", "Try Your Love Again", "Party Animal", "Whatever We Imagine", "One More Rhythm", and "There's No Easy Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie JacksonRock Me Tonight ... LP
Capitol, 1985. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Freddie Jackson was certainly one of the biggest new soul stars of the 80s – and this debut LP is still a treasure! Freddie's got a skill that transcends his age – with an approach that's decidedly 80s, but classic enough to last for years and years. The songs on the record are all extremely well-written, and although the arrangements have certain elements that might date – like DX7, drum machine beats, and floppy bass pedal riffing – the quality of the work is super-high all around, and Freddie's rich soul vocals hold everything together perfectly. Catchy tunes abound – and tracks include "He'll Never Love You (Like I Do)", "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)", "Calling", "I Wanna Say I Love You", and "You Are My Lady". Rebbie JacksonReaction ... LP
Columbia, 1986. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A smoking second album from Rebbie Jackson – a set that has Rebbie working with strong production help from two of the bigger aspects of the Columbia Records soul family in the 80s – Tito Jackson and Reggie Lucas, who each handle a handful of songs along with David Conley and Howie Rice. The album's got a bubbly, perky approach to soul – almost more catchy and beat-heavy than Jackson's debut for the label, with cuts that include "Reaction", "Ticket To Love", "Ain't No Way To Love", "Lessons In The Fine Art Of Love", "Always Wanting Something", "You Send The Rain Away", and "If You Don't Call". Evelyn Champagne KingSo Romantic ... LP
RCA, 1984. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Evelyn King's still gliding high here – working with that upbeat, catchy style that really helped her hit big during the early 80s – a perfect fit for the hook-heavy sound of her vocals! The mode's a bit like Denise Williams at the time, although maybe a bit less commercial – and King brings in a host of different producers to help give different shape to different tracks in the set – almost in a way that tries to reach out towards a number of (then) contemporary soul modes – some mellow, some upbeat and grooving. Titles include "I'm So Romantic", "Till Midnight", "Out Of Control", "Just For The Night", "Heartbreaker", and "Talking In My Sleep". LP, Vinyl record album

Al Lirvat & Robert Mavouzny QuintetBlowin At The Cigale ... LP
Numera (France), Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A very cool record from saxophonist Robert Mavouzny and trombonist Al Lirvat – the latter of whom also cut some biguine albums on the French scene of the 70s! This set's maybe a bit straighter jazz, but you can definitely hear some unusual touches at play – as the group opens up with help from Xavier Chambon on trumpet, Wolf Schubert on piano, Jack Sewing on bass, and Michael Silva on piano. A few moments are more swing, but others are more offbeat – a very unusual session! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy OceanLove Zone ... LP
Jive, 1986. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A big one for Billy Ocean – a set that's got some catchy beats on the bottom and plenty of sweetly crafted vocals over the top! The style's smooth, but never too much so – thanks to a nicely percolated sense of rhythm on most of the numbers – and in a way, the record represents a nice transition for Billy – a set that pushes him even further past his Caribbean roots into the mainstream of American soul. There's a bit of a quiet storm vibe on here, but one that's never too heavy or forced – and titles include "Love Zone", "Without You", "There'll Be Sad Songs", "Bitter Sweet", "It's Never Too Late To Try", "Showdown", "Promise Me", and "Love Is Forever". Alexander RobotnickCe N'Est Q'Un Debut ... LP
Materiali Sonori (Italy), 1984. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Classic work from the legendary Alexander Robotnick – an artist who not only scored big on European dancefloors in the early 80s – but one whose electronic grooves also went onto really shape the sound of house music here in the US! Although a few of Robotnick's tunes were issued over here on an EP, this full length set was a European-only release – and offers up even more of him to love! "Problemes D'Amour" is the real winner here, and probably most well known cut – a classic blend of beatbox and keys, all percolating together with a "wikky wikky" magic that still really sends us, with nice vocoded vocals, too! The rest of the set's nothing to dismiss either, and includes "Computer Sourire", "Dance Boy Dance", "Hola Macci Kola", "Ce N'Est Q'Un Debut", and "Afrikan Kola". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michael Zager BandLet's All Chant ... LP
Private Stock, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crossover classic from the Michael Zager Band – a record that played big in the clubs at the end of the 70s, and got plenty of spins on the homefront too! The title track is a massive classic – with its instantly-memorable "Let's All Chant" groove – and unique rhythm that was perfect for the period's move from straight disco to some bouncier styles of 80s club – particularly the roller skating mode! Yet there's also some other great disco material on the set too – tunes that bounce along with trademark female chorus vocals – mostly sounding pretty darn great on numbers like "Soul To Soul", "Love Express", "Freak", and "Music Fever" – and faltering slightly on the offbeat "Dancin Disney" medley – a batch of Disney tunes set to disco grooves! ✨✧ Rosemary ClooneyRosie Solves The Swingin Riddle ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A rare gem from Rosemary Clooney, and a great set done with arranger Nelson Riddle – grooving nicely in a bigger band mode, but inflected with plenty of great Riddle touches on the instrumentation – in a way that matches the playful quality of Rosie's vocals! The overall sound is quite dynamic – especially on the horns, which often step out in some unusual blasts of sound – and Clooney sounds equally great on both the ballads and the upbeat, highly-swinging numbers. Titles include "Shine On Harvest Moon", "By Myself", "Angry", "I Get Along Without You Very Well", "April In Paris", and "How Am I To Know". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A monster album that's gone on to influence a generation – but which was barely recognized at the time! Singer Eugene McDaniels had scored big with some pop hits in the 60s under the name Gene McDaniels – but here, he steps out in a righteous batch of offbeat funk tunes – filled with politics, offbeat rhythms, and some very weird instrumentation. The whole thing's awash in moody, jazzy changes – of the style that showed up often in samples by Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, and other artists who drew keen inspiration from this record. Titles include the massive "Jagger the Dagger" – plus "The Lord Is Back", "Lovin Man", "Headless Heroes", "Freedom Death Dance", and "Supermarket Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

A funky big band album, recorded by Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, with the great Joe Williams on vocals! The record is one of the most sought-after by the team – probably because it includes the hard breakbeat version of "Get Out of My Life Woman". The other tracks are pretty funky, too, with nice soul groovers like "Night Time Is The Right Time", "Woman's Got Soul", and "How Sweet It Is". Al Wilson grooves it beautifully here – years away from any of his big early hits, but still bubbling over with all the warmth and soul we always love in his music! There's a groove that's definitely rooted in Philly – and which is carried off with much more of a mid 70s vibe than you'd guess from the date of the record – just a touch of mainstream disco at times, with more of a focus on the upbeat soul styles that were first coming from Sigma Sound before the club sound of the decade got too commercial. Titles include "Earthquake", "Is This The End", "Since I'm Without You", "Tomorrow's Sun", "You Got It", and "Count The Days". LP, Vinyl record album

The set's incredibly strong throughout – filled with some of the new post-Peppers ideas explored by the group, yet also with some catchier numbers too – great sing-songy tracks that undoubtedly were a big mainstream influence to the world of late 60s psych! Portrait, 1982. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Soaring vocals from Angela Clemmons – a set that really has an amazing range, and a depth of sound that goes way past the usual from Epic Records at the time! Angela's got a way of stretching out right from the start – inflecting the lyrics with a rich power that easily matches or beats some of her bigger-name contemporaries at the time – and which really help give an extra something special to the record. Production is by Paul Leka, and a number of songs were written by Michael Brown – and the pair really help give the whole thing a personal feel, and keep the set from being just another run of the mill mainstream soul album from the early 80s. Titles include "Giving It Away", "Fill You Up", "Uneasy", "When You're Through I'll Be Waiting", "Mine", and "Sure Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny Johnson & The BandwagonJohnny Johnson & The Bandwagon ... LP
Epic, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An excellent uptempo soul groover, and a lost gem from the late 60s soul years on Epic. Johnny and The Bandwagon have a very groovy psychedelic pop soul sound, with the kind of swingbeat that was very popular with the Beach Music scene in the Carolinas, but which still sounds pretty darn fresh today. This one and only album by the group is quite tough to find, but it's well worth searching out, especially since we don't know of anything by them that's been reissued legitimately. Titles include "Are You Ready For This", "You", "Girl From Harlem", "I Ain't Lyin", and their big hit "Breakin Down The Walls of Heartache". LP, Vinyl record album
