✨✧ Nick IngmanBig Beat ... LP
De Wolfe/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A funky sound library gem from Nick Ingman – not to be confused with the other Big Beat records from the KPM label – as this set's got an even sharper, hipper vibe overall! Keyboards are in the lead on most numbers – although they get lots of support from the beats promised in the title – as Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and other keyboards soar out in a range of modes that even includes a few moogy moments that are especially nice! Instrumentation is lean overall, although still with all that strong sense of arrangement that can make even larger groups from these golden British years so great. Lots of funky instrumentals throughout – with titles that include "Strike", "Down Home", "Thrust", "Snatch", "Trip Wire", "Overtone", "Smooth", "Long Line", "Throng", and "Orgy". Francesco De MasiLa Macchina Della Violenza (aka The Big Game) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beat/Spettro (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
An excellent 70s Italian film score – penned for a political thriller, but handled with a fair bit of sweet and lovely themes! The album's one of the best we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi, and it nicely mixes his usual strong talents for action with a bit more warmth that befits the sexier side of the Italian cinematic spectrum. Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". Ace Of CupsIt's Bad For You But Buy It! ... LP
Big Beat (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
A long-overdue full length album from Ace Of Cups – a really unusual female group from the Bay Area scene of the late 60s – but one who never hit the heights of their bigger San Francisco contemporaries! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. Titles include "Music", "Glue", "Taste Of One", "Stones", "Pretty Boy", "Waller Street Blues", "Simplicity", and a great version of "Afro Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible album – one of the greatest rock albums of the 60s, and a record we'd place right up there on the shelf next to Pet Sounds or Forever Changes! The arrangements are sublime – proof that the Zombies were growing way past just a simple Brit Invasion style, into a world of complicated orchestrations, subtle songwriting, and some of the most baroquely beautiful vocals ever recorded in the service of pop music! The whole thing's amazing – the kind of essential record we never tire of – and tracks include "Changes", "Care of Cell 44", "Rose For Emily", "Hung Up On A Dream", "Friends Of Mine", and "Butcher's Tale". ✨✧ Masaaki HiraoNippon Rock N Roll – The Birth Of Japanese Rokabirii 1958 to 1960 (10 inch vinyl) ... LP
Big Beat (UK), Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Rare rock from the Japanese scene of the postwar years – but sounds that definitely have a universal appeal overall! Masaaki Hirao is way more than just a novelty remake of American rockers of the time – as he's got a sharp-edged sound that easily rivals the best we had to offer here in the US – the charm of Elvis, the propulsion of Johnny Burnette, and the offbeat appeal of Buddy Holly! Yet the sounds here are often quite their own thing, too – especially on the Japanese language numbers which make up most of the set, and which have Masaaki stepping away from straight American cover versions, and really doing some great things on his own. The guitar lines are especially great – recorded with brilliant twang and echo that really matches the power of the vocals – and the set features some mighty nice live tracks that are even more biting than the studio material! 10 cuts in all – including "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "Hoshi Wa Nandemo Shitteiru", "Isuki No Komoriuta Rock", "Crazy Love", "Ooh My Soul", "Jenny Jenny", "Miyo Chan", and "Blue De Memphis". EMI (UK), 1966. Sealed ... $19.99
Excellent "a go-go" soul from Brit beat group phenom Zoot Money – recorded in a style that was very faithful to his roots in US soul and R&B, but with the usual UK touches. The record was recorded live at the Klook's Kleek nightclub in London – and it's got some of the best work we've heard in this mode from the time. Side two features a tasty "James Brown Medley" with some of James' best funky numbers from the time – plus a funky instrumental reading of "Mashed Potato USA". Other tracks include "Florence Of Arabia", "Chauffer", and "Barefootin". LP, Vinyl record album

Dot, 1958. Very Good+ ... $7.99
An assortment of tracks recorded together under the Downbeat name, but which was really designed to showcase the budding jazz talents on late 50s Dot Records! The set kicks off with a big band, Basie-ish number – "Blues Over Easy", performed by Manny Alban and jazz greats that include Nick Travis, Gene Quill, and Jerome Richardson. Next up is the Tony Scott quintet with Jimmy Knepper – on a version of "Scrapple From The Apple" – followed by 2 tracks by Steve Allen – one trio, one with a quartet with Georgie Auld – "Rose Room" and "The Fast Thing In C". Paul Horn follows up with "Give Me The Simple Life" – and the set's completed by "Dougy's Buggy" performed by the Don Elliott Quintet, with Elliott on trumpet and vibes, plus bass clarinet by Hal McKusick. Capitol, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. Butch Engle & The StyxNo Matter What You Say – The Best Of Butch Engle & The Styx (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beat Rocket, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Surprisingly strong work from a Bay Area group who never managed to crack the big time back in the day – then hung up their guitars at a time when most of their contemporaries were really starting to blossom! Maybe the issue was that Butch Engel & The Styx had experience going back to the start of the 60s – moving through familiar guitar-based modes for the first part of the decade, before really hitting their stride with the wonderful sounds on this record – done partly in collaboration with Beau Brummel Ron Elliott, who helped produced and lent them some songs – but also with this increasingly heartfelt, freewheeling quality that could have put them at the height of the SF scene, had they kept going. The set features rare singles issued on the Golden State, Loma, MEA, and Onyx labels – plus some excellent unreleased tracks too – titles that include "I Call Her Name", "Left Hand Girl", "Hey I'm Lost", "Going Home", "I Like Her", "Puppetmaster", "If You Believe", "Tell Me Please", and "She Is Love". White Whale/Beat Rocket, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A completely amazing bit of psychedelia – recorded in Vancouver by the very young Jay Kaye, who was just 15 at the time – but done with a sound that easily rivals some of the more trippy classics from the big names of the late 60s! The record's got this perfect blend of tunefulness and way-out modes – songs that are certainly sometimes as catchy as material by the Beatles, both other times maybe as blue as work by the Tims of the time, Buckley and Hardin – served up with instrumentation that often echoes Eastern modes, but in the right sort of subtle way – mixed with a bit of fuzz and echo. Way more than the usual obscure oddity set – one that truly has classic depth – with titles that include "Fly", "Break Of Dawn", "Little Children", "Speed", "The Times", "Magical Fingers Of Minerva", and "Dead". Large ProfessorLP (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Paul Sea Productions, Mid 90s. New Copy (reissue)... About December 12, 2019
The legendary unreleased LP album from Large Professor – recorded for Geffen in the mid 90s, finally seeing official release by Large Professor's own Paul Sea Productions! It's a solid effort, with a vibe that for some reason wasn't speaking to Geffen brass at the time, but it stands up now as a pretty faultless example of solid blueprint beatcraft by one of the scene's pioneers. Some of the production is laidback and jazzy, some has a more booming bass beat, and LP's rhymes are tailored nicely to his beats. Titles include "That Bulls**t", "Hungry", "I Juswanna Chill", "Funky 2 Listen 2", "Mad Scientist", "Hard", "One Plus One" feat Nas (not too far removed from his Large Pro collaborations on Illmatic at this point), "The LP", "Dancin' Girl", "Large Pro:Verbs", "Havin' Fun", "Spacey", "Amaman", "Queens Lounge", "Bowne" and "Big Willie". PetardsHitshock (180 gram pressing – with poster) ... LP
Liberty/Bear Family (Germany), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
Maybe the standout album from The Petards – a German group who got their start during the big beat group boom, but who really start to trip out nicely on this album for Liberty! Lyrics are all in English, and sung in a freewheeling style that echoes some of the more soulful psych singers on the American and UK scenes – and although the instrumentation reflects the compact elements of the beat years, they're also filled with really wonderful touches that trip things out in the best way possible – especially on the organ and occasional flute! Songs are well-written and beautifully executed – surprisingly under-indulgent, and with a tunefulness that should have made the album more of an international hit at the time. Titles include "Mekka", The Dream", "Pictures", "Blue Fire Light", "Sunshine Rainshine", "Ruins Of Tookamoon", "Stone By Now", and "My World". LP, Vinyl record album

The album's got the group really stepping up with a rich new sound – drawing on all the best elements of their New Jersey roots, but hitting harmonies that are even more sublime – and put together perfectly by Lou Toby's arrangements. This debut from the trio's a real classic – proof that the indie group soul sound can make it to the big time – and although the lyrics are a bit off-beat, but that's always part of the charm of the group. George RussellNew York New York & Jazz In The Space Age ... LP
Decca/MCA, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
A 70s issue of 2 seminal sides from George Russell, originally recorded in the 50s. The first, New York New York is a wonderful album from George Russell – and a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast that includes John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Max Roach, and Hal McKusick – all working together to paint tones on the tunes that George has crafted to set up his scene of New York in the 50s. Most importantly, though, Jon Hendricks acts as the narrator of the album – talking and scatting in hipster mode, laying out a bit of beat rapportage about the Big Apple, all done in a very cool 50s style that's a bit different from his own vocal work. Titles include "Manhattan", "Big City Blues", "Manhattan-Rico", and "A Helluva Town". And don't let the title of the second, Jazz In The Space Age, mislead you into thinking it's a record of bachelor pad musi. The set's one of Russell's finest recordings of the 50s, and it features some wonderful work in odd tones and scales, executed by another awesome cast of players, including Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Hal McKusick, Bob Brookmeyer, and David Young. An essential chapter in Russell's career, and nice to have in any form. Titles include "Chromatic Universe (parts 1, 2, & 3)", "Dimensions", "Waltz From Outer Space", and "The Lydiot". The classic Mavis vocals are very firmly in place, but the record's also got a warmer glow than usual – great arrangements from Jesse Saunders, who again comes to the record as a bit of a surprise – but really helps make a setting that's very fresh for the Staples sound, especially if you've heard as many records by Mavis as us! Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99 34.98
A fantastic collection that looks at the relationship between American soul and reggae in a very unique way – not the early crossovers of soul and rocksteady in the 60s, but a big wave of disco-inspired sounds in the 70s! The set brings together some great Jamaican and British versions of American club tracks from the late 70s and early 80s, plus some soul cuts from earlier years – often done with rhythms that are slower and more bad-stepping, in a true reggae mode – but with songs and lyrics that are lifted right from bit hits by artists like Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and others! The mix of modes is wonderful – and maybe comes across even better than on some of the Afro disco records of the period – thanks to a great track selection, in the usual Soul Jazz standard. A great set that moves towards the farther reaches of the Caribbean scene in the 80s – music that's much more underground than some of the bigger soca and tropical hits of the time! As you might expect from the Soundway label, the work here is a very unusual, very well-done presentation of a fresh slice of global music – Caribbean cuts that borrow bits from electro soul, house music, and other styles of the time – and weave the newer elements into island rhythms with a very forward-thinking feel! The tunes are heavy on keyboards and beats, yet still have a indie soul sort of charm – and as usual with Soundway, the whole thing comes with very detailed notes on the music. Most tunes are b-sides, dubs, or edits – and titles include "Last Days" by The Millers, "Wild Indian Band" by Andre Tanker, "Zion Gates (dub)" by Mohjah, "I Want Your Love" by Peter Britto, "Hotter & Hotter (dub edit)" by Juno D, "D'Jab Jab Dance (bad lad mix)" by Colin Jackman, "Fighting Soldier" by Cito Jarvis, "Stand Up & Rock Your Body (inst)" by Roger Bain, "Fire (ext dub edit)" by D Ivan, "Body Beat" by Bill Campbell, and "It's Alright" by Adonijah. Some great funky jazz by one of Poland's greatest musicians! Zbigniew Namyslowski cut his teeth playing modernist alto sax in the group of Krzystof Komeda, but on this mid 70s set, he's grooving hard in a tight set of choppy fusion tracks with that hard European approach on the downbeat! The group's a quintet – with Namyslowski on alto, Tomasz Szukalski on tenor and soprano, and Wojcieh Karolak on electric piano – and the tracks are long and spiralling, a bit free, but always with some good grooves, and held down especially nicely by Karolak's keyboard lines! AfriqueSoul Makossa ... LP
Mainstream, 1973. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that situation – kind of a quickie project issued by Mainstream Records to cash in on the hit – but it's also an amazing bit of lost funk, and a record that's lasted for years in the hearts of beatheads! The group's a studio combo headed by Richard Fritz – and includes funky drummer Paul Humphrey, organist Charles Kynard, and guitarist David T Walker – all players we can trust to keep things groovy. The record does include a version of "Soul Makossa" that's pretty great – but even better is the breakbeat classic "House Of The Rising Funk", apparently the same version of the track that was issued on a 45 under the name The Chubukos. Other nice ones include "Kissing My Love", "Hot Mud", "Get It", "Hot Doggin", and "Let Me Do My Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

B-Boy/Traffic, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

CuicaCity To City ... LP
Ubiquity, 2003. Sealed 2LP ... $6.99
The debut release from Cuica – a group that features Simon Serrietella, aka Big Bang! Cuica take their name from a Brazilian percussion instrument that has a very unusual sound – and while this record has very little to do with Brazilian music, it does have a highly percussive sound – one that's almost a stripped-down version of the London broken beats of Big Bang. The groove is very spare on most cuts – and a lot of the basis for the percussion is natural instruments, sampled and looped in a way that gives the work a nice tribal kind of feel. Warm keyboards step out on a number of cuts, adding in a nicely soulful approach – and titles include "Nights Over Vauxhall", "Slipping Away", "Afrique", "Meierising (parts 2 & 3)", "Why Not Samba", and "Double Blues". Cypress Hill's debut masterpiece – one of the biggest and best first albums in 90s hip hop! There's little we can add to the canon when it comes to describing this album's impact, but it's still pretty revelatory. Like other west coast rap heavies of the time, Cypress Hill documents real world street violence with a darkly comic sensibility, redefined usage of the word "blunt" forever more, and simply delivered one of the most influential rap (or rock. . .considering the astonishing crossover success) albums of the decade. "How I Could Just Kill A Man", "Hand On The Pump", "Hole In The Head", "Real Estate", "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk", "Phunky Feel One", "Pigs", "Latin Lingo", "Something For The Blunted", "Psychobeatbuckdown" and more. Each one of these characters is so brilliant at their best, this record would've been a lot of fun even of they were just winging it – but it's actually pretty A-Game – with big, boisterous beats and clever samples and pretty deft rhymes throughout! Gary Davis/Chocolate StarChocolate Star – A Taste Of Chocolate – The Very Best Of Gary Davis ... LP
Traffic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 24.98
Incredible work from Chocolate Star – less a group than a record label or project name used for some excellent underground club recordings from the late 70s and early 80s! Gary Davis is the real brainchild here – keyboardist, songwriter, and main spiritual force behind the music – but Peter Brown also played a big hand in some of the initial Chocolate Star sessions too, and there's a definite P&P groove to most of this work! The Chocolate Star touch is perhaps best known on the classic club track "Got To Get Your Love" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction – but it's even better on the more obscure work throughout the entire package – an array of tunes that run from funky club to other modes that include mellow soul, old school hip hop, and even some very spare tracks that mostly just have keyboards and beats! Titles include "Gee Dee", "Last Night", "Stay With Me", "Time For Love Is Now", "Super Jake", "Got To Get Your Love", "The Professor Here", "The Pop", "Gotta Get Your Love (Kenny Dope rmx)", "The Pop (12")", "The Professor Is Space Walking", and "Gee Dee (alt mix)". An incredible collection of work from the vastly-overlooked Geater Davis – and a set that definitely lives up to its title! Geater Davis is a tremendous singer from the south – but one who barely ever got his due back in the 70s – even though these recordings for the tiny House Of Orange label are every bit as amazing as work coming out for bigger labels like Stax or Hi Records! Although Davis didn't record nearly as much as his contemporaries, he's got a sound that matches or beats them – a raw, raspy quality that's a bit like Bobby Blue Bland, touched with the depth of feeling we love in James Carr, peppered with elements of other Memphis singers – all produced to perfection with a sound that's got a deep-burning soul that never lets up. This excellent collection features all tracks from Geater's rare album Sweet Woman's Love, plus additional singles from the time – all produced by Allen Orange, an overlooked genius in the southern studio scene of the 70s. Titles include "Don't Marry A Fool", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Love You", "I Know My Baby Loves Me", "I Can Hold My Own", "Cold Love (long version)", "I'll Get By", "I'll Play The Blues For You", "Breath Taking Girl", and a killer long take on "For Your Precious Love". Elektra/Get On Down, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $21.99
Not the famous debut album from Deee-Lite, but a killer set of grooves that has the trio very much at the height of their powers! So many folks remember these guys as a bigger pop act, they tend to forget how much they brought back to dance music – a real embrace of warmer elements from the past, served up in samples and set to rhythms that were often more funk-based than a lot of the stark, stiff, house-inspired beats of the time! Lady Kier is completely charming in the lead – and the group get lots of help on production from Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, who really add in a Masters At Work level of soul. The music comes across in two different modes – side one has more acoustic elements, and uses compelling percussion alongside offbeat strings – and side two brings in some more contemporary elements, but never in a way that sounds pop or mainstream – thanks to the vocals of Fairuz. Big, heavy late 60s British rock from Gun – with the raw, lumbering and bluesy (or better, bloozy) power trio core that's fleshed out in the studio with horns and other more sweeping touches! It's wild stuff, a genuine precursor to heavy metal in the searing guitars, thundering drums and bass, and wild eyed vocals – we have to wonder of the label thought it was too menacing and brought in the strings and horns to make it more approachable – but it actually just makes it weirder, which we love! Titles include their hit "Race With The Devil" plus "The Sad Saga Of The Boy And The Bee", "Rupert's Travels", "Yellow Cab Man", "It Won't Be Long (Heartbeat)", "Sunshine", "Rat Race" and"Take Off". An 80s groover from LTD – one that has the group working strongly on both groovers and ballads, the latter of which may well be the strongest suit here! Jeffery Osborne's long gone from the group, but his warmly soulful legacy lives on in the vocal style of the love songs – kind of a mellow-flowing way of putting over a tune that hints at the bigger 80s quiet storm years to come. The upbeat tracks have an 80s groove mix of funky bass, beats, and keyboards – not as warm as the LTD funk of earlier years, but still handled with a bit of flair. The earliest work we've ever seen from this legendary South African group – and music that's got a much rawer, more stripped-down vibe than the albums that made them famous in the 80s! These tracks are mostly just group vocals with a bit of percussion and guitar – billed as "zulu vocal jive" or "zulu vocal" on the back cover – and with a romping, joyous quality that resonates with some of the bigger South African stars who were getting some global exposure in the mid 60s – upbeat, lively, and really positive in spirit, despite the struggles taking place on the scene. Curtom, 1974. Very Good ... $9.99
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as played-out as some of Curtis' bigger hits. The production style's still the same – with plenty of rumbling funky soul, arranged by Rich Tufo in that classic Curtom mode – and you can't beat Curtis' vocals on songs like "Mother's Son", "Love Me (Right In the Pocket)", "A Prayer", and "Ain't No Love Lost". A big one for Billy Ocean – a set that's got some catchy beats on the bottom and plenty of sweetly crafted vocals over the top! The style's smooth, but never too much so – thanks to a nicely percolated sense of rhythm on most of the numbers – and in a way, the record represents a nice transition for Billy – a set that pushes him even further past his Caribbean roots into the mainstream of American soul. There's a bit of a quiet storm vibe on here, but one that's never too heavy or forced – and titles include "Love Zone", "Without You", "There'll Be Sad Songs", "Bitter Sweet", "It's Never Too Late To Try", "Showdown", "Promise Me", and "Love Is Forever". A rare soul treasure from the duo of Estrus and Lester Patterson – a pair who recorded in virtual obscurity during the late 70s, but managed to come across with the strengths of the bigger soul acts of the time! The album was recorded in Nashville and Fort Wayne, Indiana – but has a vibe that's maybe like the better Cali soul of the period – not the indie sides, but the bigger label sets – with really well-formed songs penned just for the date, and instrumentation that moves easily between upbeat groovers and slower-stepping tracks that really fit the vocals nicely! These guys manage to pack in plenty over the course of the album – and in addition to the catchy title cut "Let Me Be Your Lover", and the funky "Funk Machine", other cuts include "A Good Thing", "Disco Dream", "Gonna Find A True Love", "You Give Me Someone To Love", and "He's A Loser". Reprise, Early 60s. Very Good ... $1.99
A beautiful solo moment from the lovely Keely Smith – the singer who first rose to fame in a famous 50s partnership with the lively Louis Prima – but who always had a lot more to offer right under the surface! On her earlier Capitol Records albums with Prima, Keely would occasionally get the chance to step out solo and do a more sophisticated song or two – yet here, working for Reprise, she's out in the spotlight, singing to incredible Nelson Riddle arrangements, and really knocking it out of the park! Smith has a vocal range that should have made her huge – certainly in the company of the bigger, more mature female singers of the 60s – and side one of the album features mellow tracks, with some more upbeat material on side two. The album features a set of all English language tracks – with Sunny Ozuna singing in his best sweet soul style on the ballad tracks, and hitting a raw raw groove on the harder-hitting numbers, really nailing the groove on both fronts. As with "Happy Together", there's a nice edge to a lot of the tracks here – sweet, but with currents of darkness too – as if the group's looking at pop from the outside – able to effortlessly do their thing, while also twisting things around a bit. Yet they also take themselves more than seriously enough to hit pop perfection throughout – on titles that include "Guide For The Married Man", "The Walking Song", "Think I'll Run Away", "Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "Like The Seasons", and "Rugs Of Woods & Flowers". United Artists, 1975. Very Good ... $14.99
A huge moment for War – maybe the group's biggest album of the 70s, but a set that still has them holding onto everything that makes the great! Like Earth Wind & Fire at their best, War have this way of staying strong and righteous, while still able to hit a hook – jamming one minute, but finding sharp focus the next – and balancing it all out over the course of an album so that there's a sense of depth that really keeps on going once the familiar cuts draw you in. In this case, the familiar cuts are giants – the stunning Latin funk gem "Low Rider", which became an anthem for a generation, and the radio hit "Why Can't We Be Friends" – mixed with other nuggets like the jazzy "Don't No One Get You Down", the funky "Heartbeat", and the cuts "Lotus Blossom", "Smile Happy", "So", and "Leroy's Latin Lament". Raw and soulful Jamaican rocksteady – first class in quality and first class stylistically – strongly representative of the brief, but pivotal rocksteady sound that presaged the reggae revolution to come! The sound essentially stripped some of the bigger arrangements of Jamaican ska and earlier styles – and focuses more on an R&B-influenced sound with impeccable rhythms, achingly soulful vocals, and tight, tuneful songs that really let the singers hit new heights! A lost legacy in the always-hip Pacific Northwest scene of the 60s – rare psych and garage tracks from the tiny Garland Records – an Oregon imprint who only issued a small amount of singles, but also recorded some really excellent music back in the day! All the tracks here are pretty darn rare, and the package also features some unissued music too – work that shows a great evolution of northwest sounds since the bigger guitar bands of the early 60s – with some trippier, headier elements showing up in the instrumentation, lyrical modes, and even the production – which is often pretty darn hip for a small label like Garland. The monumental debut of BT Express – and an excellent funk album that often gets overlooked by fans of the music because of the band's bigger fame as a disco group! This first record has the combo grooving hard and instrumentally – in the mode of a tight blacksploitation soundtrack, with plenty of tight wah wah guitar riffing, conga beats, and funky flute and sax – topped off by just the right amount of strings to make the set soar even more! The album's best known for the title track "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)" – which was a big hit, but is still an excellent groover – and the set also includes loads of other great cuts too – like "Express", which was the original song that the created the JBs' response track "Monorail"; "This House is Smokin'", which has lots of funky descending horn bits; and other great tunes that include "Mental Telepathy", "If It Don't Turn You On", and "Do You Like It". Ok, so these goofy guys got us all a bit annoyed when they hit the charts big in the early 70s – but this album also includes a monster breakbeat: a totally great spare drum riff that happens right at the beginning of their big hit "Put Your Hand In The Hand". The break is worth the price of the entire album – and it ensures that this one's still turning up in DJ crates worldwide, even those belonging to DJs who don't remember how terrible it was to hear the song on the radio! ✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". ✨✧ GeminiGemini Rising ... LP
M&M, 1981. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A classic boogie groover from the early 80s – the one and only album from Gemini, and one of the few albums issued on the tiny M&M label! Although an indie effort, the album's got a tightness that matches the best 80s groove on bigger labels from the time – especially the excellent work coming out of Capitol, which would be a good match for the upbeat rhythms and well-crafted grooves going on here. Production is right on the money – very together without sounding slick – and the album's got a wonderfully soulful charm, served up by two male vocalists who sound great on both the upbeat and mellower tunes in the set. Titles include "Everytime I See A Pretty Lady", "You've Got Something Special", "Ain't No Love", "My Love For You Keeps On Growing", "The Power Of Your Love", and the great mellow soul ballad "I Don't Want To Lose You". Sweet 80s sounds from the legendary Kool & The Gang – one of the key classics from the second chapter of the group – when their lineup and sound were a lot leaner than before, and they managed to cross over big to a much wider audience than before! The upbeat cuts show that the group were still kings of the funky dancefloor – and the mellower ones are equally great too – showing a rising ballad style that proved to be the group's big crossover card at the time – a way of putting over a laidback track, but with plenty of soul. This approach is heard to great effect on the album's great single "Cherish" – and other tracks include "Bad Woman", "Surrender", "Emergency", "Misled", "Fresh", and "You Are The One". Quite possibly the biggest early moment of US fame for Roxy Music – thanks to the classic "Love Is The Drug", which kicks off the album and is easily one of the group's best-known tunes of the 70s! The album tightens things up slightly from the sound of Country Life before – not as many dark corners, but still plenty of the offbeat styles that make these early Roxy Music albums so great – with none of the softer styles that took over during the early 80s years. Other tracks include "End Of The Line", "She Sells", "Could It Happen To Me", "Both Ends Burning", "Just Another High", and "Whirlwind". LP, Vinyl record album

A monster album that's gone onto influence a generation – but which was barely recognized at the time! Singer Eugene McDaniels had scored big with some pop hits in the 60s under the name Gene McDaniels – but here, he steps out in a righteous batch of offbeat funk tunes – filled with politics, offbeat rhythms, and some very weird instrumentation. The whole thing's awash in moody, jazzy changes – of the style that showed up often in samples by Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, and other artists who drew keen inspiration from this record. BBE (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant funky instrumentals from the UK Cavendish Sound Library – a company who could sometimes recorded more staid music, although that certainly wasn't the case with the gems on this collection! The music is by a handful of British studio talents of the time – most of whom come from the jazz scene in earlier years – and provide a great update of their earlier talents with some very sweet electric touches! Many of these tunes have some really great keyboards – Fender Rhodes or even moogier elements – and many also have wicked basslines next to the funky drums, which really make things kick throughout. These tunes are vastly undiscovered – at least in comparison to better-known sound library funk from companies like KPM or DeWolfe – but we'd put these grooves right up there with the best of that bunch too. Titles include "Night Shade", "The Rally", "Southbound", "Snowmobile", "Night Driver", "The Trackers", and "Lady Killers" by Dennis Farnon; "Milky Way" and "Star Voyage" by John Scott; "Two Bars" and "The Scape Goat" by Pete Moore; "The Big Score" by John Cacavas, "One Way Trip" by Sam Fonteyn, "Smile Of A Stranger" by Dominic Sands, "Riff Raff" by Geoff Bastow, "Come Cuban" by Edward White, and "Kaleidoscope" by Tony Kinsey. Act One (Act 1)Act One ... LP
Spring, 1974. Sealed ... $16.99
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – because some tunes are spare, simple, and heartbreaking – really building off the best qualities of 60s harmony soul, but with a lot more sophistication – while others are bolder, more upbeat, and positive – really using the new studio modes of the time to send a few tunes really over the top! The mix is quite similar to Black Ivory at their best – although the album's more under-discovered treasure – and although it's the only record ever by the group, it's got a solidity that should have made them as big as any of the 70s stars on Atlantic or Philly International! Titles include "Goodbye Love", "Friends Or Lovers", "Tom the Peeper", "Party Hardy People", "I Don't Want To Know What You Do To Me", "Still Waters", "It's The Same Old Story", and "Love's Got Your Mind". Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... LP
Rozenblit/Audio Clarity (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". A groundbreaking little record – and one that set a whole new standard for guitar funk in the 70s! By the time of this set, Dennis Coffey had been playing, arranging, and producing all over the Detroit soul scene for many years – so it wasn't like he really needed a hit to get paid or anything – but the record forever marked him as a guitar player to be reckoned with, and is a perfect showcase for Coffey's fuzzed-out funky style – instantly recognizable and still extremely popular today! The album contains the monster breakbeat cut "Scorpio" – kind of a seminal text of hip hop – plus plenty of other groovers like "Getting It On", "Garden Of The Moon", "Big City Funk", and "Sad Angel". There's some really wonderful work on the record that easily matches, if not beats Chris Connor gems on some of her bigger albums of the time – especially since some of the cuts show Connor trying out some new modes, and new ideas – elements that go past her usual vocal jazz styles, with some cool inflections that really open things up. 5th Dimension5th Dimension Live! ... LP
Bell, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $3.99
A groovy little live album from The 5th Dimension – not nearly as smoothly polished as their studio albums, in a way that really makes the set stand out nicely! The vocals are still completely top-shelf – a heavenly sound that's hard to believe comes from five mere mortals – but the musical backings are a bit more rough-edged and soul-based – a harder groove than the group gets on their full albums, in a way that provides a great contrast to the harmonies on the lyrics! There's also a great sense of "liveness" to the set – patter from the group before the tunes, and some upbeat medleys of some of their bigger hits – strung together in ways that are a lot nicer than just simple live remakes of familiar songs. Titles include "I Just Want To Be Your Friend", "Eli's Coming", "Never My Love", "Shake Your Tambourine", "Ode To Billie Joe", "I Want To Take You Higher", and two longer medleys of hits! Don GereWerewolves On Wheels ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $24.99
A biker soundtrack to end all biker soundtracks – one that shares plenty of elements with better-known entries in the genre, but which also has some really wild and offbeat moments! As with most of the short-lived motorcycle soundtrack era, the vibe here is much more rock than other film scores of the time – written and performed by Don Gere, with a variety of styles that echo some of the fake groups that were often thrown together for bigger biker films – but sometimes with looser, weirder elements that really deliver the kind of sounds that we always expected on other biker soundtracks, but which were instead buried under piles of b and c-grade psych. Instead, Don really serves up the goods here – especially on some of the more fuzzy Satanic ritual tracks, which also have some great sound effects – and which then have you embracing some of the straighter rock tracks, almost as a relief. Titles include "Werewolves On Wheels (Main Theme)", "Mount Shasta Home", "Ritual", "Ritual 2", "The Devil's Advocates", "One Foot In Heaven", "Burning Grass", "Tarot", "Tarot Trail", "Dust Bowl", "Ritual 3", and "Werewolves On Wheels (End Theme)". A delightfully offbeat soundtrack from the glory days of the biker film – put together by Harley Hatcher, but featuring performances by a whole host of different artists! Hatcher approaches the record with the same sort of vibe that Mike Curb was using for similar projects – working with a bunch of short vocal numbers, most of which are performed by lesser-known groups, in styles that are almost a Sunshine Pop take on biker rock! The big star here is Bill Medley – who sings "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" – and other titles include "The Hard Ride" and "Victorville Blues" by The Sounds Of Harley; "Shannon's Hook Shop" and "Let The Music Play" by Bluewater; "I Came A Long Way To Be With You" and "Carry Me Home" by Thelma Camacho; and "Fallin In Love with Baby" by Junction. A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. First Word (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
Beautifully dynamic work from drummer Myele Manzanza – an artist we've never heard work in this scope before, and we hope will soon do so again! The album's got Myele at the helm of a great large ensemble – a group who have a strong spiritual sense at the core, but often move in more vibrant rhythms driven by Manzana's work on the drums – not really funky, maybe more in an upbeat modal mode – which allows for great sounds from the rising crest of alto, trumpet, tenor, trombone, and flute in the lineup! Bass is by Ross McHenry, whose sound is a key core part of the record – and Ross also produced, as well – really capturing the right sort of vibe for the entire album. Myele's part of the Adelaide scene, in New Zealand – but we'd put this record right up there with some of the best work coming out of the London jazz world in recent years – with titles that include "Big Deal", "Madrid", "Itaru's Phone Booth", "Family Dynamics", "Ritual", and "A Love Requited". Jalapeno (Spain), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Gizelle Smith got caught in the rain on the cover – but you'd hardly know that, given the sunny, upbeat vibe of the album! Smith's a singer who's been bubbling under for years, and this sweet little set may be the one that breaks her out to the big time – as the album has her going past the role of just being a female singer with a funk group – into territory that feels much more able to take on the world of mainstream soul! Not that the album's not funky – because it is – but there's a cohesion here between Smith's self-penned lyrics and the contributions of the musicians that's really wonderful – almost at the level of an old school soul production, but at that refreshed level that the London scene gave us many years back. As with some of the greats from those years – like N'Dea Davenport or Carleen Anderson – Smith seems ready to take the world on with her pride and power – on titles that include "Hero", "Scared Of Something", "Love Song", "Ruthless Day", "Twelve", "Hey Romeo", and "Dust". The record has a very similar feel to his legendary Seven Golden Men soundtrack – with a groovy swinging jazz vocal group (I Cantori Moderni) over jazzy riffing and groovin – on upbeat tunes that are very cool, with a mod 60s style throughout! The whole thing swings mightily – and kind of feels like what might have happened if the Swingle Singers ever recorded with Lalo Schifrin – his best jazz-infused instrumentation, and their wonderfully dynamic vocal approach. Sweet electro funk from the second half of the 80s – served up here by a group with a vibe that's much more like the indie styles of the start of the genre! The set's heavy on beats, basslines, and keyboards – and even includes some vocoder bits too – all with a lean groove that's pretty darn great throughout – very much in a boogie funk mode, but with some occasional variations that really keep things interesting! Even the slower cuts rely strongly on the beats, but never in a way that's heavy handed – and some warmer keyboard washes even hit at bigger label potential for the group – although we certainly like them more in this indie mode. One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". We're not entirely sure what a "stash box" means in terms of music – but after hearing this very groovy collection, we may well be using it as a term ourselves! The set features rare material recorded for the tiny Garland Records label in Salem, Oregon during the late 60s – but the sound and style is different than other Pacific Northwest material of that decade – often a bit sweeter and sunnier, with elements that resonate more strongly with changes taking place on the LA scene of the mid 60s – including some great harmony vocals on a few numbers, and a way of mixing slight psych touches with romping rhythms – all to to create sounds that are almost a garage equivalent of Sunshine Pop from bigger studios. Most of these tracks were never issued at the time, and even the few that were are pretty darn obscure – making the whole thing a treasure trove of really fresh music – with titles that include "Life Laced Leaf" by Inner Circle, "Maybe Today" by Tim Culbertson, "What Goes Up Must Come Down" by Fatty Twice Together, "Grey Day" by The Wild Side, "Parousia" by Lawe, "We'll Meet Again" by Tyme, "Part Time Love" by Will Logan, "Keep On Looing" by The Ultimate, and "Tears" by The New Dawn. Philly soul at its finest – served up here in a collection that brings together classics from the Philadelphia International label, plus some nicely overlooked cuts! Most of the music here comes from the world of Gamble & Huff – that legendary production duo who helped take soul music into sophisticated territory after the 60s – and although the set's got some upbeat groovers, most of the music here is in the mellower or midtempo sound of Philly – and has less of the disco modes of the bigger crossover hits. Japanese soul expert Hiroshi Nagai selected the tracks – and titles include "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, "Always Room For One More" by McFadden & Whitehead, "One Day Of Peace" by Love Committee, "Mysteries Of The World" by MFSB, "Hey Baby" by Anthony White, "A Nice Girl Like You" by the Intruders, "Lady In Red" by Ronnie Dyson, "City Of Brotherly Love" by Soul Survivors, "Where Did All The Lovin Go" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Was That All It Was" by Jean Carn, "The Sweetest Pain" by Dexter Wansel, and "Put Our Heads Together" by The O'Jays. A revelatory selection of tracks recorded on a Nairobi music scene that was really overflowing with creative energy – so much so that the music here doesn't just come from Kenyan talents, but from Tanzania and the Congo as well! There's a positive spirit that imbues most of the grooves – sounds that are upbeat and pulsating with rhythm – yet also put together at a level that's never too commercial at all – especially resisting the temptations that over-polished so much other music from the continent during the big world music boom of the 80s. Instead, these tunes revel in long, open interplay between guitars, bass, percussion, and voice – on selections that include "Ochieng DJ Komoro" by Victoria Chomeka, "Maria" by Orchestra Moja One Band, "Remmy Belesa" by Biashara Jazz Band, "Gilbert Wambida" by International De Nelly, "Amemiki (part 2)" by Orchestra Bana Ekanga, and "Nakuomba" by Baba Ilunga Wa Ilunga – a lost archive track, which appears here for the first time ever. The first full length album from Bonobo – aka Simon Green – a set that's gone on to have a surprising amount of endurance over the years, and which really helped mark the pace for a new generation in the beats and soundscape universe! The record kind of takes off from the territory of Kruder & Dorfmeister in the decade before – with some low-end sounds that almost have you wanting to speed up the record, mixed with some lighter elements on top of the beats, and these bits of organic, almost exotic sounds – which might well be the biggest Bonobo contribution to the scene at the time. Titles include "Kota", "Terrapin", "The Plug", "Sugar Rhyme", "Silver", "Shadowtricks", "Sleepy Seven", and "Dinosaurs". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition heavyweight yellow vinyl pressing!)

✨✧ James BrownLove Over-Due ... LP
Scotti Bros, 1991. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
James Brown going strong into the 90s – and almost hitting a mode that's a bit like some of his first few records of the 80s! James is firmly at the helm here – producing, arranging, and writing most numbers – and while the sound is definitely more contemporary than on his classics, there's also still a definite Godfather-ness that always shines through. Most of the upbeat numbers have that peppy, bouncy sort of vibe that James was laying down on his bigger post-disco groovers – and a few other tracks hit a mellower, bluesier mode that's in keeping with his image on the cover. Titles include "Dance Dance Dance To The Funk", "Teardrops On Your Letter", "Later For Dancing", "Standing On Higher Ground", "Show Me", "Move On", and "It's Time To Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Foreign ExchangeConnected (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Foreign Exchange, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Tracks include "Von Sees", "Raw Life", "Let's Move", "Nic's Groove", "Sincere", "Brave New World", "The Answer", "Come Around", "Happiness", "All That You Are" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jack McDuffWalk On By ... LP
Prestige, 1966. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff from Brother Jack McDuff – very hip, with a mixture of soul jazz and 60s grooving that's hard to beat! The album's also one of Jack's harder to find numbers on Prestige – and it features tenor work by Red Holloway and Harold Ousely, guitar by Pat Azzara, drums by Joe Dukes, and some occasional bigger arrangements by Benny Golson, who always gave Jack the hippest sound around! Includes a sublime mellow cover of "Walk On By", plus the tracks "Song Of The Soul", "Too Many Fish In The Sea", "For Those Who Choose", "Talkin Bout My Woman", and "Around The Corner". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy McGriffElectric Funk ... LP
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever – a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts – and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! Jimmy takes an upbeat and easygoing approach to the late 60s funk sound, with a nice, rubbery bass and the organ sound just killer – but would expect less from McGriff on that front? Truly funky and totally irresistible stuff, with sinister, measured moments that bigger and heavier pretty quickly - kind of prefiguring 70s blacksploitation soundtrack vibes in spots! The album's great all the way through – tight arrangements by Horace Ott, who also plays electric piano on the set, making for a clean, cool 2-keys kind of groove. Titles include "Spear for Moondog" (parts 1 & 2), "Tight Times", "Funky Junk", "Bird Wave", and "Back on the Track". LP, Vinyl record album
(German Liberty stereo pressing. Cover has some wear with an ink stamp on the back.)

Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Anita O'Day pays tribute to Downbeat poll winners by singing vocal versions of their big hits in this lively set of jazz tracks from the 50s! Arrangements are by Marty Paich and Russ Garcia, both swinging as nicely as they ever did – and the setting of the album keeps Anita nicely in line, sticking to more straight jazz material than you might hear on some of her other sets from the same period. Titles include "Frenesi", "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Early Autumn", "Four Brothers", "Four", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ OutkastATLiens (2LP 180 gram picture disc) ... LP
LaFace, 1996. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The huge creative leap forward for Outkast – and one of the greatest hip hop albums ever! The duo laid some incredible groundwork with the debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but this one is really their first (and stunningly, not their last) masterpiece. Timeless and soulful outer space grooves lace teh production and beats behind crazy good, free flowing, inventive rhymes that still manage to stay grounded enough to aptly reflect the darker realities of the ATL of the time. Most tracks have a laid back southern fried groove, and Dre and Big Boi's rhymes are as great as ever here. Essential! Tracks include "ATLiens", "Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac)", "Wheelz Of Steel", "Jazzy Belle", "Babylon", "Millennium", and "13th Floor/Growing Old". 14 cuts in all. LP, Vinyl record album
(Really nice 20th anniversary double picture disc pressing!)
