A pair of historical soundtracks for films directed by Luchino Visconti – back to back in a single package, with a fair bit of bonus material too! First up is Ludwig – a rich orchestral score for this film tale about the reign of Ludwig II of Bavaria – one that deals with his interest in the music of Wagner, and features a fair bit of his compositions as well – in addition to compositions by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Offenbach too! The style is mostly romantic classical, with some modern touches – and the music is conducted by Franco Mannino, who also transcribed some of the compositions in more conventional arrangements. Next up is Death In Venice – a haunting score for Luchino Visconti's film adaptation of the short story by Thomas Mann – set to a range of classical themes from Mahler, Beethoven
, and Mussorgsky – which made the soundtrack quite a hit on the classical crossover world too! The music is conducted by Franco Mannino, who also extrapolates some of the themes in more contemporary arrangements with his orchestrations – and the work is performed by Accademia Di Santa Cecilia, with performances by soprano Mascia Predit, pianist Claudio Gizzi, and contralto Lucretia West.
