✨✧ VariousYou Need This – An Introduction To Black Saint & Soul Note Records 1975 to 1985 (3LP set) ... LP
Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. One of the best albums ever by this legendary Chicago trio – a great example of the way that records on the Nessa label can really get to the heart of artists' intentions! The trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion have never sounded better – and have this intimate, soulful interplay that's sometimes missing from other efforts – that special kind of energy that makes the AACM so great when it's really clicking this well – as deeply spiritual as it is freely expressive! Threadgill plays alto, tenor, bass flute, and the compelling hubkaphone – and titles include "I'll Be Right Here Waiting", "No 2", "GvE", "Subtraction", and "Keep Right On Playing Thru The Mirror Over The Water". Buda (France), 2018. New Copy ... $18.99
A very cool group from Mali – one who have some of the older currents that you'd associate with the scene, but served up with a nicely contemporary crackle! The vocals often have those bluesy inflections that have risen up strongly in west Africa – but the instrumentation also has a nicely electrified current alongside rootsy percussion – especially when moments of distortion come in to play, almost with the blown-out quality you'd know from Konono, although maybe less processed overall. There's also a lot of vocal interplay between lead singer Fassara Sacko and other members of the group – on titles that include "Tangwanana", "Salia", "Stange Koreduga", "Dirty Donso", "From Segou To Nightmare", and "Rougeot" – plus the very funky "Mali Liberela", which almost has some James Brown-ish guitar! Strut (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A totally great collection of work from the German scene of the early 80s – a time that's often referred to as the German New Wave – although the music was usually a fair bit darker than any new wave sounds in the Anglo world! Instead, maybe think of this work as a cool compression of ideas that were floating around during the Krautrock generation – a shortening of prog rhythms, electronics, and production – infused with a bit of punk energy, but never too much – so that there's a sharper, more focused sound overall – but one that's still full of all these great sonic experiments! The language enough is something that really sets these songs apart – and at some level, you could almost argue that it's styles like these that the German pop language was waiting for after all these years – perfect for the mood, even if you can't understand the meaning – on titles that include "Your Turn To Run" by Malaria, "Der Karibische Western" by Die Haut, "Track 4" by Mania D, "Fred Vom Jupiter" by Andreas Dorau & Die Marinas, "Voyager One" by Stefan Bloser, "Amanita" by Leben Und Arbeiten, "Fakten" by ExKurs, "Pingelig" by Aus Lauter Liebe, "Scharfer Schnitt (no 1)" by Populare Mechanik, and "Offnen Sie Mal Ihre Tasche" by Franz Erlmeier & Fritz Kostler. Elektra/DBK Works, 1979. Used ... $11.99
Our favorite Elektra album by Terry – different than his earlier work for Cadet, with a smoother jazz-based style of backing. The change works surprisingly well for Terry, pushing him into a new sound that still preserves his honest soulful vocals. The album includes nice remakes of "Ordinary Joe" and "Occasional Rain", both from his days on Cadet, plus the great track "Turn You To Love". Also includes a groovy cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again". CD

Abkco/RCA, Early 60s. Used ... $4.99
A brilliant overview of Sam's best secular soul from the 60s – a well-done collection that contains tracks from Sam's early sessions for RCA, and which presents the material with a full set of notes by Peter Guaralnick, and complete details on all the sessions! Some of the tunes on here were hits, but there's a lot more here that are less familiar, including a few unreleased numbers – such that hearing the CD together is like finding that great, lost, no-nonsense Sam Cooke album that never really came out at the time! Titles include "Shake", "Yeah Man", "Good Times", "Falling In Love", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", "Rome (Wasn't Built In A Day)", "The Riddle Song", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "I'm Just A Country Boy", "Keep Movin On", and "There'll Be No Second Time". 23 tracks in all. ✨✧ Sam CookeSam Cooke At The Copa ... CD
Abkco, 1964. Used ... $2.99
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. Titles include "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Try A Little Tenderness", "If I Had A Hammer", "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", and "This Little Light Of Mine". CD

Marianne FaithfullCome & Stay With Me – The UK 45s 1964 to 1969 ... CD
Decca/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A wealth of wonderful work from Marianne Faithfull, all pulled from those key early years when she was part of the musical world of Andrew Loog Oldham and the Rolling Stones! Yet right from the start, despite the fact that she sang a few Stones songs on her own (and wrote a few for the group, too) – Marianne was always very much her own singer, and had a way with a song that was quite different than most of the other UK girl pop artists of the time too! Faithfull sometimes has a trill, and always has a sense of darkness on these singles – almost in the territory of the young Nico, but more tuneful and less moody – and superbly set up in just the right sort of arrangements by Mike Leander, David Whitaker, and even the great Jack Nitzsche. CD features all the a and b-sides of these early singles, plus a huge amount of notes – and 22 tracks that include "Morning Sun", "Sister Morphine", "As Tears Go By", "Summer Nights", "The Sha La La Song", "Something Better", "I'd Like To Dial Your Number", "Counting", "That's Right Baby", "Tomorrow's Calling", "This Little Bird", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Go Away From My World". Bob Seger & The Last HeardHeavy Music – The Complete Cameo Recordings 1966 to 1967 ... CD
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". CD

Jason Stein is one of the few folks who can make a bass clarinet sound like a completely fierce instrument – a horn blown with the kind of frenzy and sonic power that most musicians would bring to a tenor – completely set free here in a fantastic trio with Jason Roebke on bass and Mike Pride on drums! Roebke's bass has this rock-solid, thoroughly rumbling vibe that really matches the tonal range of the bass clarinet – creating a massive bottom end to the record, which is only driven deeper by Pride's drums – except for those great moments when he gets a bit more open-ended on the percussive tip, and might well seem to be the lightest member in the group! ✨✧ Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD

Delmark, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from the great Josh Berman – one of the most important musicians on the Chicago underground scene of the past decade or so – not just for his work on cornet, but also for his warmly collaborative and supportive spirit! That quality really comes through here – on a trio date that has Josh's horn with Jason Roebke on bass and Frank Rosaly on drums – all working together in this very special, very individual style – one that seems to embrace so many different decades of jazz at once – from the early trad phraseologists admired by Berman, to the postwar modern that's resurfaced in the recent Chicago scene, to the 21st Century experiments that all three members have engaged in! All the music is composed, but the performance has a looseness that almost feels improvised – save for the sense of cohesion in the tunes, and that no player ever steps too far outside – even though all of them are pretty darn freewheeling. We're not sure we've ever even heard a cornet trio before – but even if we had, there's never been anything like this – as you'll hear on titles that include "Cold Snap", "Today's Date", "Mint", "Your Uncle", "Time/Trouble", "Wooden", "Bridges", and "Luggage". Abdul-Malik was the legendary bass player from the fifties who mixed straight jazz playing with traditional Middle Eastern rhythms – and although he most famously recorded albums with Monk as a regular bassist, his albums on his own are amazing blends of jazz and world music, done years before anyone else had contemplated doing so! This album is similar to Abdul-Malik's Jazz Sahara album, in which he plays quite a bit on the Oud – but in this one the ensemble is much more jazz-oriented, and features Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, and Johnny Griffin. The Oud holds center stage on most tracks, but then it drops out, and Morgan and Griffin come wailing in on solos that will rip your socks off! Titles include "Rooh", "La Ibky", "Takseem", "Searchin", and "El Ghada". Fantastic!!!! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sidi ToureToubalbero (with download) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A more joyous, upbeat side of Mali blues singer and guitarist Sidi Toure – and maybe his best yet for Thrill Jockey! Backed by a tight group featuring Boubou Diallo on backing vocals, Djadke Traore on guitar, Ousmane Dagnon on n'goni, Baba Traore on bass and Mamadou Kone on drums, Sidi soars out front with his trademark spindly electric guitar and soaring vocals on songs that are as lively as any we've heard. Part of that might be due to this being his most electric guitar based album we've heard, but the songs themselves have a bigger, loftier sound. Includes "Hendjero", "Moulaye", "BK", "Djirbi Mardkie", "Toubalbero", "Tchirey", "Handaraizo", "Heyyeya", "Sitiali Boubou", "Kaoula" and "Tarzidet". LP, Vinyl record album
Also available Toubalbero ... CD 9.99
