✨✧ MoodsMoods ... CD
Soiree/BBQ (Japan), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sublime lost group soul album – featuring The Moods, who we presume to be from St Louis (although we're working on second-hand information, so we're not sure!) The group have a harmony style that's a bit like Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – but with rougher touches, and none of the disco mode of that group's later work – and on this set, they work their way through some wonderful numbers that groove at a midtempo pace, moving in smooth soul modes with electric piano and tenor behind the group's wonderful vocals. A real gem if you dig harmony ensembles – with an approach that's kind of east coast early 70s indie, but which has a tightness that makes us wonder why these guys didn't hit bigger! Titles include "Funk It Out", "Without Her", "Live Today", "Grooving When We Meet", "This Magic", and "You Came Into My Life". CD

Mighty Joe YoungMighty Joe Young ... LP
Ovation, 1976. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Modern electric blues from Chicago, featuring Mighty Joe on guitar and vocals, plus backing by a tight rocking band. There's some electric keyboards in the group, which gives it less of a rootsy sound than you'd expect – but the album's still pretty spare. Titles include "Takes Money", "Mean Hitchhiker", "I Give", "Love Bone", and "Take My Advice (She Likes The Blues & BBQ)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout hole.)

✨✧ Jack McDuffHot Barbeque ... LP
Prestige, 1966. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff – not just for the cover (which is plenty appealing to us as BBQ fans!), but also for the tight, sharply focused grooves on the set – some of Jack's first really firey work on record! The combo here is great – with a young George Benson hard-wailing on guitar, cutting lines so fast and furious it's hard to believe – especially if you only know his later work. The legendary Joe Dukes is on drums – dancing all over the place under Brother Jack's great groovy solos – and Red Holloway completes the group on tenor sax! The title track's got a rare vocal refrain – with Jack shouting out "Hot Barbeque" over the organ – and other cuts include "Briar Patch", "Hippy Dip", "601 1/2 North Poplar", and "The Three Day Thang". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing, a nice clean copy! Cover looks great. Label has some marker, but it blends in with the blue.)

✨✧ Sonny StittLegends Of Acid Jazz – Turn It On/Black Vibrations ... CD
Prestige, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 classic Stitt albums back to back – Turn It On and Black Vibrations, both recorded during his early 70s funk years at Prestige! Turn It On is very firmly the funky Prestige sound of the early 70s – complete with Idris Muhammad on drums, organ by Leon Spencer, guitar by Melvin Sparks, and trumpet by Virgil Jones. After years of noodling around on the Varitone, never quite hitting his right moment, Stitt breaks out nicely in the company of these hot young funky players. The record's got a few mellow moments that point towards his older ballad style, but the funky numbers are the best. Titles include "Turn It On", "The BBQ Man", and "Miss Riverside". On Black Vibrations, Sonny Stitt joins up with a tight group of prime Prestige funky players – like Idris Muhammad, Leon Spencer, Melvin Sparks, and Virgil Jones – for a sound that's much funkier than some of his other records for the label. The set's got a good set of modern funk tracks, with all the quality moments you'd expect from these top-notch players. Titles include "Goin' To DC", "Calling Card", "Them Funky Changes", and "Black Vibrations". CD

✨✧ Sam PagliaKiller Cha Chacha ... CD
Cinedelic (Italy), 2003. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Really wicked stuff – and the greatest album from Sam Paglia to date! Sam's really honed his classic 60s organ sound to a "T" for this one – grooving in a manner that sounds a heck of a lot like famous soundtrack work by Quincy Jones or Lalo Schifrin (no surprise, he covers tracks by both in the set of mostly original tunes!) The grooves are nice and lean, with plenty of organ in the lead – and styles run from 60s mod to 70s funky, with lots of nice twists! Titles include "Bullitt", "Suspense", "Room 26", "Black Loop", "Organsm", "Introduction", "Return Of Lo Blanco", "BBQ", and "Sanford & Son". CD
