BB & Q BandGenie (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
The last true classic from the masters of the 80s groove genre – a post-Capitol effort for Elektra, but one that's still awash in great keyboards and snapping electro beats! Some of the jazzier sound from the past is gone here, but in its place is a leaner, cleaner sound that's still a fair bit more compelling than most work by the group's contemporaries! Nearly all tracks snap along with rhythms that are nicely placed between the street and the dancefloor – never gimmicky and never too cloying, and tightly focused enough to make the most of the hooks in the vocals. Lots of DX7 on the album, and more than a few numbers have a great sort of breakdance vibe. Tracks include "Riccochet" and "Dreamer" – both remixed by Shep Pettibone –"On The Shelf", "Genie", "Main Attraction", and "Don't Force It". CD features 6 bonus tracks – including "Dreamer (no 1 rmx)", "Main Attraction (finest rmx)", "Dreamer (Shep's dream version)", "Riccochet (Ben Liebrand mix)", and "Dreamer (Shep Pettibone long voc version)". ✨✧ BB KingHere's One You Didn't Know About – From The RPM & Kent Vaults ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
An excellent collection of rare work from the legendary BB King – a selection of 25 tracks from the vaults of RPM and Kent Records, 23 of which appear here for the first time ever! Some cuts are alternates, some are different versions of other recordings – and all are pretty darn wonderful – that sharp-edged BB King sound right at the start, before the famous Memphis powerhouse was recording for bigger labels in a more commercial setting! Lots of these cuts have a jazzy backing alongside BB's sweet guitar and raspy vocals – a mode that's similar to the mix of bigger band and bluesy elements you'd get on early work from Bobby Blue Bland – that great Memphis mix of modes that always makes us love this stretch in King's career so much. Titles include unusual versions of "Sweet Little Angel", "Catfish Blues", "Early In The Morning", "I Wonder Why", "Goin Down Slow", "Whole Lotta Meat", "Loving You In Vain", "Long Nights", "The Woman I Love", "Soul Beat", "Don't You Want A Man Like Me", "Be Careful With A Fool", and "Whole Lot Of Lovin". ✨✧ Budos BandV ... LP
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Titles include "The Enchanter", "Spider Web (part 1)", "Old Engine Oil", "Veil Of Shadows", "Arcane Rambler", "Valley Of The Damned", and "Rumble From The Void". LP, Vinyl record album

A stone classic from Skyy – one of those groups who virtually helped invent 80s groove! Like the best of the genre – such as Slave, BB&Q Band, and others – Skyy have a soulful approach that goes way past the simple cliches that other groups were so content to only muddle around it. The sound here goes very deep – based around the bass-heavy funk sound of the time, but setting up the instrumentation with lots of jazzy touches, and coming up with a strong ensemble approach that offers up plenty of freshness, even while the boogie groove goes on and on! ✨✧ Bootsy's Rubber BandAhh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
Massive work from Bootsy Collins – one of his best-ever solo albums, and a perfect summation of the P-Funk groove – focused strongly through Bootsy's own sense of stardom! George Clinton worked with Collins on production, and the album's as tight as the best Parliament or Funkadelic work of the time – particularly the latter on their killer 70s sides for Warner, which was also the home for Bootsy. The Horny Horns are helping out on this one, which gives the album a strong instrumental drive – but the real star is Bootsy, whose sexy vocals and good sense of soul keep things firmly on track throughout. Features the cuts "What's A Telephone Bill?", "Munchies For Your Love", "We Want Bootsy", "The Pinocchio Theory", and "Rubber Duckie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bootsy's Rubber BandStretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band ... LP
Warner, 1976. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Bootsy Collins' first solo album as a leader – and a masterpiece of slow bassy funk that set the tone for countless other groups to come! Bootsy steps into the spotlight with a tremendous amount of confidence and personality on the record – emerging as the one real star that could shine brightly on its own in the P-Funk galaxy – oozing personality, sexuality, and super-funky grooves throughout! George Clinton's helping Bootsy out on production a bit, and the rest of the P-Funk regulars are in the group as well – but the album's clearly Bootsy's own, and takes mainstream funk into a whole new sound – one that would really set a high bar for much of the west coast scene in years to come! Includes the massive "I'd Rather Be With You" – plus "Physical Love", "Love Vibes", and "Psychoticbumpschool". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Evans PyramidEvans Pyramid ... LP
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s. Sealed Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Rare grooves from Evans Pyramid – a sweet set of cosmic disco from the end of the 70s – recorded with a lean, almost spiritual vibe – quite similar to some of the great tracks reissued in the Soul Cal series! There's a definite ear for the dancefloor here – lots of upbeat rhythms, touched with sweet keyboards riffs, and layered with vocals that are almost an afterthought – yet have their own sort of message at the right moment. The group's the brainchild of Andre Evans, an artist whose huge legacy of music business work includes stints with Dyke & The Blazers, Little Anthony & The Imperials, and Tribe – as well as a host of key album sessions as well – but the sound is unlike any of those references, and has this great stripped-down late 70s club vibe throughout. The rare album is offered here with unreleased bonus tracks – and titles include "Rubber Band", "Never Gonna Leave You", "Dip Drop", "No I Won't", "Soul Petrol", and "Dance A Thon". David Clayton ThomasDavid Clayton Thomas/Tequila Sunrise/David Clayton Thomas (with bonus track) ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A trio of solo albums from David Clayton Thomas – packaged here with a bonus track too! First up is the self-titled Columbia set David Clayton Thomas – great early solo work the singer who'd rose to fame as part of Blood Sweat & Tears – stepping out here with a sound that's maybe even more soul-based than his music with that famous group! The set features production from Bobby Colomby, of BS&T – and the groove is somewhat similar, but with less horns, and a lot more riffing guitar, keyboards, and other elements used to bring out some of the funkier currents in David's vocals! A few tracks were recorded in Memphis, with guitar from Steve Cropper – and the record even features some arrangements from Claus Ogerman and Jimmy Giuffre. The set includes a remake of of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" – with a break at the start that's as funky as the original – and other titles include "We're All Meat From The Same Bone", "Sing A Song", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Once Burned", "Stealin In The Name Of The Lord", and a surprisingly great take on the Gram Parsons tune "She". Next is Tequila Sunrise – a fantastic solo album from David Clayton Thomas – and a set that still retains the amazing vocals he brought to Blood Sweat & Tears, but which has a completely different focus overall! Clayton-Thomas wrote almost all the songs on the set – and he works here with a tight core group that features William Smitty Smith on keyboards and arrangements, and plenty of guitar from Danny Kortchmar – both musicians who give the whole record a very strong, tight vibe that makes the whole thing feel like it comes from some hip early 70s group. Titles include "Friday The 13th Child", "My Song", "Last Time That She Cried", "The Face Of Man", "Nobody Calls Me Prophet", and "Fallin By Degrees". Next up is another self-titled album – David Clayton Thomas, from 1973 – with David himself handling arrangements, and doing a mighty nice job – getting plenty of sweet keyboards from William D Smith, and strong lead guitar from Domenic Troiano – both of whom echo the funky rock currents in the music. There's a bit of a Memphis rock vibe to the record at times – and titles include "Small Family", "Professor Longhair", "Harbor Lady", "Harmony Junction", and "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". CD also features the bonus track "Some Hearts Get All The Breaks". CD

Carl Drewo & The Clarke Boland Big BandSwing Waltz Swing ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 29.99
One of the coolest projects ever to come from the Clarke Boland Big Band scene of the 60s – an album done under the leadership of Austrian tenor player Carl Drewo, but one that features all of his bandmates from the better-known big band! The set's wonderfully swinging throughout – done in a jazz waltz style with plenty of modal inflections – hardly the overdone Strauss modes you might expect from Drewo's roots, and more of the groovy 60s European rhythm modes that would show up often in sessions on Saba & MPS! Most tracks dance along beautifully – using instrumentation that includes Benny Bailey and Dusko Goykovich on trumpets, Sal Nistico on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone and flute, and Derek Humble on alto – all supported by the CBBB rhythm team of Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – plus the amazing Fats Sadi on percussion, really grooving along nicely at the bottom. Drewo's the lead soloist in most numbers, but he allows plenty of space for his bandmates too – and the session's got a sound we'd rank right up there with some of the best Clarke Boland projects of the 60s. Titles include "Wives & Lovers", "Fruhlingsstimmen", "My Favorite Things", "Claudia", "Schon Ist Die Welt", "Just Give Me Time", and "Keep On Keeping On". LP, Vinyl record album

A great batch of rare tracks from the legendary Fela Kuti – unreleased for many years after their recording – which was done in London in 1971, when EMI sent Fela to the UK for a special session at their Abbey Road studios! The set benefits from the great production values of that historic place – and the band grooves tightly in tracks that are a little bit shorter than usual, but which still burn with all the intensity of the later African recordings – almost a more focused approach that draws a bit more link between American funk before some of the freewheeling jams of the side-long Afro Funk tracks! Gap BandGap Band (1979)/Gap Band II/Gap Band III ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Massive music in a wonderful package – three funky classics from The Gap Band! First up is the group's self-titled album from 1979 – the start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. There's also a few mellower cuts too – which really sound great, and give the record the same sort of balance you might hear on work by Heaven & Earth at the time. War's Lonnie Simmons produced – and held the cash bag all the way to the bank! Titles include "I'm In Love", "Got To Get Away", "Messin With My Mind", "Shake", "Baby Baba Boogie", "Open Your Mind Wide", and "I Can Sing". Gap Band II features mean, lean grooves from The Gap Band – a legendary batch of mainstream funk from the end of the 70s – and a record that really has the trio working at the top of their game! There's a wonderful balance here between funky numbers and mellow ones – the latter of which really help pace the record nicely, giving it a depth that takes the group way beyond the cliches of some of their contemporaries, and firmly establishing the Gap Band as one to watch for the 80s! Titles include the massive "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up & Dance" – with its classic "Oops Upside Your Head" refrain – plus "Who Do You Call", "No Hiding Place", "Steppin Out", "You Are My High", and "Party Lights". Gap Band III is sagreat one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! Tunes like "Burn Rubber On Me (When You Want To Hurt Me)" and "Humpin" packed 80s dance floors for good reason, and put the band in steady rotation, while numbers like "Yearning For Your Love" showed the band could drop the tempo, stretch out a bit, and deliver the mighty mellow. This one's certainly at the top of the heap of 80s groovers, as far as we're concerned – a record that really took the Gap Band over the top! Other tracks include "Nothin' Comes To The Sleepers", "Are You Living", "The Way", "Gash Gash Gash" and more. CD

Gap BandGap Band 8/Straight From The Heart (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Total Experience/BGO (UK), Late 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 19.99
A pair of late 80s gems from the Gap Band – back to back, with bonus tracks too! First up is Gap Band 8 – very sharp work from The Gap Band – working confidently in a mid 80s boogie soul mode with a couple of solid slow jams and that funky synthesizer groove which they had pretty much perfected by this point! The Gap Band's way of inflecting easygoing 80s soul and more ballad-y numbers with funky synth and bass, as well as diverse styles of percussion is a big piece of the pie at this point in their career – as is the supremely catchy songwriting. Definitely an overlooked Gap Band effort worth revisiting! Includes "Big Fun", "I Can't Live Without Your Love", "Get Loose, Get Funky", "Don't Take It Away", "I'll Always Love You", "Bop B Da Da (How Music Came About)", "I Owe It To Myself" and more. Straight From The Heart is great work from the later, leaner sound of the Gap Band – a time when the group were working with a bit more programming than before, but still very much in the funky soul territory of their roots! Like contemporaries Cameo, Gap Band were able to make a great shift into the electro soul generation – one that maybe even got them greater fame than in the early years – almost as if their initial impulses were waiting for the 80s funk generation to really find the right sort of sound for their groove! The whole album's rock-solid – filled with tunes that should have been hits – and titles include "Come & Dance", "All The Way Yours", "I'm So Satisfied", "You Told Me That", and "Straight From The Heart". 2CD set features six bonus tracks from Gap Band 8 – "Big Fun (mega mix)", "Zibble Zibble (dub-zibble money mix)", "I Owe It To Myself (rmx)", "Big Fun (Bandolero mix)", "Big Fun (serious dub mix)", and "Bop B Da B Da Da (ext version)". Kapp, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
One of the grooviest groups of the Latin Soul scene – but they'd have to be, given their name! The Latin Souls are a vocal group with a really soulful feel – a great link between the earlier harmony sounds that were bubbling under in Spanish Harlem, and some of the hipper rhythms that were hitting the scene in the late 60s – particularly the two dance modes pushed strongly in the title of the record! Many of the cuts have a nicely dark undercurrent – a bit like the best work of Ralph Robles – but the harmonies give the record a somewhat more sincere feel too, with echoes of Joe Bataan in the mix. The whole thing's great – with production from Pancho Cristal that's right up there with his other great Latin sides of the 60s. We knew we were in for a treat from the second we put it on – with the crisp bass line, the chicken scratch guitar, and the spacey keys the floated in right at the start – and that's before the drums and horns even kicked in! Totally great stuff – reminiscent of sound library funk, full on 70s crime score grooviness, and proggy keys as an added bonus – a near perfect later 70s exploitation soundtrack! Includes 18 tracks in all LP, Vinyl record album

Skin Flesh & BonesDub In Blood ... CD
Sunshot/Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $11.99
A real dub rarity – a set that was originally issued in two different versions, both with different tracks – both in very small pressings! This excellent version from Pressure Sounds combines all the cuts from both discs – in a superb package of stripped-down dubs built around songs by George Faith and Al Campbell – recorded and mixed at Channel One, with a lean, effective sound that should stand as blueprint for all those contemporary producers who might muddle up the waters with too much in the mix! The basslines are especially strong – played by Bertram Ranchie McLean, Robbie Shakespeare, and Aston Familyman Barrett – and titles include "Dub To The Vein", "Dub In Blood", "Skin Dub", "Suit Your Dub", "Heart Dub", "Bandwagon Dub", "Doctor Dub", "Syringe Dub", and "Injection In Dub". Match Box/BBE (UK), 1980. New Copy ... $36.99 38.99
That's a very homey looking cover on the record, and the album's got a nicely down to earth vibe too – a mix of funky jazz and soul from a little known group from the Oregon scene! Carl's group here mixes acoustic horns with electric elements in the rhythms – and opens up plenty to make room for two female singers – both of whom have a nicely soulful vibe, and slide in strongly with the funky ensemble modes! The approach is like some of the European funky big band records of the earlier part of the 70s – or maybe even a bit like the Daly Wilson Band when they worked with female singers – and Carl himself plays tenor and flute, and leads the group. Titles include "Gotta Be Willin To Lose", "Azz A Rite", "Get It Right", "Livin A Dream", "Stuff Like That", "You Take The Time", "Love Won't Let Me Go", and "Dig A Little Deeper". CD

Step By StepI Always Wanted To Be In The Band ... LP
Brunswick/Demon (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99 About January 14, 2022
Quite possibly the greatest soul band ever to come out of Milwaukee – and a tight little ensemble who've got a really great sound! The overall feel of their work is a bit hard to peg – as the group are equally great at mellow midtempo group numbers as they are at tighter, clubbier tunes that snap with a bit more of a horn-heavy sound – and throughout the record there's a really playful feel that shows that whatever the sound, whatever the setting, these guys just had a heck of a great time working with each other! That quality can be heard especially well on the title track "I Always Wanted To Be In The Band" – a great little number that's almost an updating of the TSU Tornadoes sound for the 70s – but the whole set's great, and other tracks move into some great super-dope production that we really love! Titles include "I Am A Lonely Man", "People", "Cool Days Are Out Of Style", "I Ain't Never Gonna Let You Go", and "Cash Money". LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1997. Used ... $3.99
Stereolab at a creative peak! Dots & Loops continues their long running 90s win streak – here balancing their ever present love for bubbling analog synth and breezy vintage electronics with a more strongly assured knack for delivering brilliant beginning-to-end excellent albums. The band is as great as ever, featuring tracks recorded right here in Chicago with John McEntire, and with some guest work by Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas, plus Jan St Werner and Andi Toma of Mouse On Mars. It's got a beautiful subdued quality to it, but it's also so expertly layered that you'll always here something new, as long as you keep coming back to it. Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $19.99 24.00 About October 20, 2021
Just about any record with Maiden Voyage in the title turns out to be pretty darn great – and this record is no exception! The set's a sweet mix of electric and acoustic modes from Japanese tenorist Tatsuya Takahashi – played by his Tokyo Union group, and featuring electric piano and bass nestled in amidst the larger horn section – all in a great blend of big band jazz and funkier modes! The title track is a great cover of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" – taken in a spacious, open way that has some weird electronics bubbling underneath – and other highlights include a great wah wah funk version of "One Mint Julep", a stepping version of "Sir Duke" with some vocoder, and a driving big band version of "Giant Steps". Bubbha Thomas & The LightmenCountry Fried Chicken (2CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Lightin/Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 15.98
One of the strangest covers we've seen in years – and a perfect fit for this obscure session of unusual grooves! Drummer Bubbha Thomas is working here in a mode that's kind of an electrified 70s take on the Texas showband style of earlier years – a mode that has the core funky combo augmented by electric keys and moog in just the right places! The tunes on the set are all instrumentals – jamming along in a sweet little style that mixes funky jazz with some of the rougher touches of the indie 45 scene – letting the band stretch out on extended solos on most cuts, but still keeping the rhythms very tight and in the pocket! In a way, the approach almost feels like some of the funkier work on Tribe Records from Detroit, especially on tracks that have more ambitious solo work. Players include Doug Harris on flute and tenor, Ronnie Laws on tenor, John Henderson on electric piano, and a young Hugh Ragin on trombone – and titles include "Herbs Of Life", "Sweet Ray", "Famous Last Words", "Country Fried Chicken", and "Survival Song". 2CD version features a whole bonus disc of unusual material – rare alternates, unreleased disco tracks, and even some synth versions of tracks from Bubbha's first two albums – plus a big booklet of notes! BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP & 7 inch Gatefold ... $29.99 34.99
A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Titles include "No More Games" by Larry Wedgeworth & Clique, "All In Good Time" by Wildlife featuring Vi Taylor, "Play It By Ear" by Cojo, "Get Up & Dance Don't Want No Party Poo Pershere" by Carrie Mims & Herbe Lee River Junction, "Feel The Music" by Dreamflight, "I Want Your Body" by Royale, "Free For All" by Second Wind, "I'm Gonna Get You (Meeow)" by Carrie Mims & Herb Lee River Junction, "You Make Me Happy" by Christopher Michael Band, "Keep It Comin On" by Gypsy, and "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics. A cool collection of clubby cuts from the Finnish scene – maybe not the biggest hotbed of disco sounds at the end of the 70s, but a nation that's certainly given us some great funk in recent years! Turns out, the funky Finnish legacy goes way back to the 70s – where some of the groups on this collection were tuning out well-crafted cuts that are often arguably a lot warmer than most Euro disco – maybe inspired in part by the strong Finnish fusion scene of a few years before, and turned out here with lots of jazzy elements next to the vocals and familiar grooves. If you dig underground club and rare disco, you'll find plenty to love here – even if some of the cuts are a bit offbeat – and titles include "Discofiilis" by Ernos, "Flying High" by Dance, "Ota" by Pirtta, "Raju Yo Stomp" by Karma, "Queen Of The Night" by Nisa Soraya, "Dancing In The Night" by Caron, "Dance For Your Life" by Bjorninen Band, and "Walking Under Moonlight" by Solar. United Souls/Philadelphia International (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 8CD, book & bonus 12" single ... $139.99 149.99
An incredible tribute to the genius of the Philadelphia Records label – a box set that features CDs of eight important records on the imprint, plus a bonus 12" single, a 48 page book, a poster, and a numbered certificate too! Includes the records: Billy Paul/Going East – an amazing blend of soul, jazz, and a soaring sense of spiritualism that's not only rare for Billy Paul – but which makes the record sound different than any other Philly International LP from the time! Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes/I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! O'Jays/Back Stabbers – a landmark album for the O'Jays – a set that moved them from the indie ranks to 70s megasoul status! Billy Paul/360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a set that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! Dick Jenson is the rare self-titled album from blue-eyed soul singer Dick Jensen – a set that has the obscure vocalist working with top-shelf talent in the Gamble & Huff team. Intruders/Save The Children is a classic album from this incredible Philly soul group! The Intruders were one of the first groups to work with the Gamble/Huff team – and their sides for the team from the 60s have an amazingly professional approach to harmony soul, never afraid to hit a good hook or go for a strong image to sell a song, yet still quite raw and honest in the vocal department, where things really matter. The self-titled MFSB record is a seminal album by this legendary Philly instrumental group – essentially the house band at Sigma Studios, and an incredible ensemble filled with top-shelf musicians! The sound here is virtually the blueprint for Philly soul of the 70s – a blend of wickedly tight rhythms and fuller orchestrations – served up in a way that's never sleepy, never overdone – and which has a careful balance that none of the group's imitators could match! Billy Paul/Ebony Woman is an amazing early album from Billy Paul – the start of a rich career of sophisticated soul, and a record that really put Paul on the map right away – making him one of the most soulful interpreters of song in the 70s! Also includes a 12" single – with versions of "Back Stabbers" done by both The O'Jays and MFSB. CD

BBE (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.98
The title says "jazz", but there's a lot more going on here – a range of groundbreaking sounds and styles from the 70s, with some sweet electric modes, occasional Latin rhythms, currents of soul, and even a bit of Brazilian too! The package really takes us back to the kind of rare tracks we first started digging decades ago – when collectors from London and Tokyo were really helping us appreciate the kinds of records we might have passed by in the racks – the lesser names, the smaller labels, and even the more globally expansive range of releases that could sometimes be missed if you were only digging for American jazz! That range of music is really represented here in a great way – with tunes that soar strongly and bristle with energy throughout – sometimes in modes that might echo a label like MPS or Strata East, but often in very unique styles of their own. Titles include "Maryke" by John Thomas & Lifeforce, "La Em Guayaquil" by Banda Metalurgia, "Samba For A Cold Warrior" by Belair, "Samba De Amor" by Francisco Mora Catlett, "Little Sunflower" by Louis Hayes with Leon Thomas, "The World Is A Ghetto" by Lee Willhite, "No Other Love But You" by Clarice Labbe & Charlie Hampton, "Misturada" by Finn Savery Trio, "Kingdom Within You" by Ira Sullivan, and "Latinetta" by Ronald Snijders. BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 5LP ... $69.99 74.99
An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. Vinyl part 1 features five different records, all with lots of space for the tunes to stretch out – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, and "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney. Akron, Ohio – a very unlikely source for super-hip music – but a city that gave the world Devo, and a whole lot of other great bands at the end of the 70s! This beautifully-done package recreates an Akron scene that only a rare few ever knew about at the time – an Ohio underground that was almost as hip as nearby Cleveland, and filled with an equally wonderful range of free-thinking, forward-moving artists! There's a punkish vibe to the music, but also lots of creative touches too – modes that move quickly past the fast and loud, into territory that's increasingly experimental, with echoes of the New York no wave scene – maybe even before it happened out east. Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $32.99 36.99
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. A sublime album from the great Bobbie Gentry – and maybe her strongest full-length set recorded during the classic Capitol years! The title's "sweete" is a hillbilly play on the word "suite" – and the album definitely works as an extended suite of tracks – almost a concept album, and one that mixes lots of Bobbie's own tunes with a few well-chosen covers – all set to larger arrangements that feature strings from Jimmie Haskell and horns directed by Shorty Rogers – all while Gentry leads the combo at the core! Later Capitol albums had Gentry doing a lot of covers, and maybe losing her identity a bit – but this set is more of an expansion on the mode she brought to the "Billie Joe" single – with tracks that include "Reunion", "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Penduli Pendulum", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Courtyard", "Okolona River Bottom Band", and "Refractions". 2CD version features a brand new stereo mix from the original tapes, the original mono mix of the album, and bonus tracks that include demos of "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Louisiana Man", "Refractions", "The Way I Do", and "Feelin Good" – plus an instrumental of "Okolona River Bottom Band", and an alternate take of "Mississippi Delta". Pye/Vocalion (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. Titles include "Kojak", "Big Boss", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Mr Majestyk", "Magnum Force", "Fist Of Fury", and "Airport 1975". CD

✨✧ Music Makers BandYou Can Be ... LP
Now Again, Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The rare lost legacy of the Music Makers Band – a funky group from Georgia who are best known under their previous incarnation as The Mighty Chevelles – who cut the superb Black Gold album the year before! The work here was never issued at the time, but represents some well-done sessions at the legendary Capricorn Studios – the group even sharper than before, and mixing in some clubby elements with their funk – but all without ever losing the edge that made them great in the first place! Kenny Dope remastered all the work here from the original multi-track masters – and each tune is presented in a well-crafted vocal version, and the set also features instrumentals, plus some extended mixes by Kenny as well. Titles include "That Look In Your Eyes", "You Can Be", "Lady In My Dream", "Shake Your Booty", "Let Me Start Lovin You", "We're The Band", and "That True Love Of Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Robbie RobertsonTestimony ... Book
Three Rivers, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Robbie Robertson has always spoken volumes with his guitar, but this well-written memoir reveals him to be quite a man of letters, too – over the course of nearly 500 pages that chart Robertson's long musical career – from early work with Ronnie Hawkins, to his time with Bob Dylan, and his seminal work in The Band, and on later recordings too! Robertson's prose is great – maybe more honest and less sensational than other books of this nature, with a great way of looking at himself and experience from a distance, and with a reasonable amount of wit as well. 498 pages, softcover, with a small section of images. Sunshot/Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky sounds old and new – a great collection of cuts that are hand-picked by Jasper The Vinyl Junkie, and which have a way of bridging the best modes of the 70s and some of the best sounds from recent years! The work here all sounds very classic, even if some of it is contemporary – rhythms that are mostly upbeat, but not really house, disco, or club – just upbeat funky nuggets that are filled with plenty of elements from jazz and soul! Titles include "Funky Cookie" by Exile One, "JB's Latin" by Spitting Image, "Safari" by Ashantis, "Berlin 1 (Hot Pants Road)" by Tihomir Pop Asanovic, "Nobody Else But You (Opolopo rmx)" by Steve Arrington, "Black Hole" by Stato Brado with Fred Wesley, "Crusien" by Thomas Siffling Trio, "Flotational Device" by E Live, "Let The Drums Speak (Harvey Lindo edit)" by Bah Samba with The Fatback Band, "Trippin High" by Eric Legnini Trio, "Painful Pleasure" by Hubert Eaves, and "Stay Cool" by Jaki Whiren & John Cartwright. Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". Rhino, Late 60s/1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest box sets we've ever seen – and amazingly issued by an American major label! This one goes way past some of the silly "decade" sets from Rhino, and really displays a new level of cool and connoisseurship – one that finally appreciates the rich depths of funky work at their fingertips, most of which has not been properly reissued in the US! BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
2CD set features one disc of the music in a continuous mix by Serge – the other with unmixed versions. One of the coolest collections ever put out by The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the hipness of the label! Downriver Revival chronicles the story of a unique studio in Michigan – Double U Sound, a custom recording spot that captured a wonderful range of soul, funk, gospel, and other sounds from the local community – beautifully presented here in a full CD, plus a bonus DVD that features the near-complete 200 song archive of the studio! The DVD's really unique – so we'll talk about it first: Done with an interactive menu that lets you literally comb through the boxes of tapes in the Double U vault – selecting each reel recorded by the studio, and sampling the rich array of wonderful sounds from this untapped Michigan scene – a huge amount of music, far more than you'd ever find on a CD compilation. The DVD also features a documentary on the studio and Downriver Revial project – and that alone would be worth the price of admission – but the CD then features 24 key numbers pulled from the vaults – tracks that were either issued on rare 45s, or never issued at all – and which represent a wonderful array of soulful sounds that definitely lives up to the Numero standard! Titles include "There's A Light" by Shirley Ann Lee, "Take Care Of Us" by The Revelations, "Untitled Jam" by Bobby Cook & The Explosions, "Foot Stumping (alt)" by Organics, "While You Were Gone" by Combinations, "Heaven" by Deliverance Echoes, "Untitled" by Burgess Band, "Round N Round" by Junior Mays Group, and "Walk With Me" by Calvin Cooke. Dust To Digital, 1920s/1930s/1940s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing collection – and one that really lives up to the genius of the original Anthology Of American Folk Music put together by Harry Smith for Folkways Records! That groundbreaking set is the stuff of legend – a package that collected rare blues, folk, string band, hillbilly, and other styles from Smith's own collection of 78rpm singles – then brought together by Folkways with copious notes and a huge amount of detail that opened the door to this lost world of music for listeners over many decades. Here, the collection goes back to further Smith's choices – by offering up the flipside of all the records included in the original set – tracks that are almost always as great as the other sides, given that so many of these artists were getting a brief time in the studio, and really gave their all during the recordings. The package is one of the nicest we've ever seen on Dust To Digital – done with more than enough notes and packaging detail to live up to the spirit of the original – in a set of 84 tracks, with work by Dick Justice, Clarence Ashley, Coley Jones, Bill & Belle Reed, Buell Kazee, Buster Carter & Preston Young, Williamson Brothers & Curry, The Masked Marvel, William & Versey Smith, Carter Family, GB Grayson, Mississippi John Hurt, Uncle Eck Dunford, Uncle Bunt Stephens, Carolina Tar Heels, Furry Lewis, Ernest Phipps, Cannon's Jug Stompers, Richard Rabbit Brown, Rev Moses Mason, Alabama Sacred Harp Singers, Cincinnati Jug Band, Rev JM Gates, Jim Jackson, Breaux Freres, Blind Willie Johnson, Dock Boggs, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Julius Daniels, Ramblin Thomas, Sleepy John Estes, and many others! 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. BBE (UK), 2021. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $52.99 54.99
One of the most compelling albums in years from Billy Bang – and that's really saying a lot, given how much compelling music he's recorded! The set is put together in conjunction with a fascinating documentary on Bang's life, music, and time spent fighting in Vietnam – an experience that stayed with him for decades, scarred him, and which here has become a way of reaching back into the past, into the culture, as a way to find some sort of personal healing! The result is fantastic – as Bang's amazing work on violin comes in contact with a variety of Vietnamese artists – including Tran Manh Tuan on tenor, Duc Dau of the Phu Dong Family Band, and even the larger Hanoi Symphony Orchestra – all different musical partners who really help Billy expand his sound and resolve some of his decades-old conflicts – presented alongside some spoken passages from the film that are very striking, and a few solo numbers too. Third World/17 North Parade, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Cornell Campbell's essentially saying that he's a stalwart – something we can completely agree with, given his strong legacy in Jamaican music – and the sublime sound of a 70s classic like this! Cornell's got a higher range than some of his contemporaries, but never in a way that makes his music sound too light or airy at all – because there's a sense of soul going on that maybe stands as a Jamaican counterpart to 70s Marvin Gaye, especially in the way that Campbell inflects his notes on the sweeter tunes on the set! Luv N' Haight, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A strange little record – but one with some very groovy moments! The album is a rare relic from the St Louis scene of the early 60s – cut by the combo of Don Cunningham, the house act at that city's Playboy club at the time! Don borrows heavily from the styles of Martin Denny, Bobby Montez, Earl Grant, and Nat King Cole – but he also puts the work together with a jazzier edge than you'd expect, one that makes for more than a few really great moments that have made the album a treasure for groove hounds for years! The album sports a mad reading of "Quiet Village", one that has the band getting really crazy with percussion and birdcalls, hardly "quiet" at all! The real standout, though, is the group's cover of "Tabu" – done with a great percussion break on the intro, and a chugging Latin groove that's sure to burn up any dancefloor! Also great is the album's two Brazilian-tinged numbers – jazzy remakes of "Manha De Carnival" and "Samba De Orpheus" – both of which feature some great percussion! LP, Vinyl record album

DioHoly Diver (picture disc) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Warner, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
One of the best heavy metal albums of all time! Ronnie James Dio had long been hailed for having some of the finest vocal chords in hard rock before this first Dio album arrived – having led the the obscure but beloved Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath in the 70s and earlier 80s – but it's Holy Diver that cements his legend. These days, it's kind of stunning how much he transcends metal cliche, as opposed to wallowing in it. Holy Diver has killer songs, Ronnie's unrivaled vocals and melodies, and the band focuses on crunching riffs instead of silly guitar solos and other elements that overwrought and badly dated so many other metal bands of the era. Includes "Stand Up & Shout", the eternal classics "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark", "Gypsy", "Caught In The Middle", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Straight Through The Heart", "Invisible" and "Shame On The Night". A great album of jazzy soul from The Fantastics – a group who can open up and let their jazzier side flow on the instrumental tracks on the set, then get more of a contemporary groove when singer Sulene Fleming joins the mix! Sulene is on four of the album's ten cuts – and brings in a deep soul vibe that focuses and steps down a bit of the group's instrumentation – which then opens with lots of strong solo work when the instrumental tracks come into play – maybe a more righteous take on a 70s funk band, as if they've been listening to spiritual jazz in their free time. Soundway (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $30.99 About November 1, 2021
Some of the funkiest, clubbiest work we've ever heard from the African scene of the 70s – great grooves that would be right at home on the New York dancefloors of the time! The style here is definitely drawn from disco, yet is a lot more funk-based too – more in the farther reaches of the disco underground of the late 70s – with some of the offbeat touches you might hear from some of the P&P family of labels. Basslines are often stronger than the beats – and although strings and other elements are sometimes used to sweeten the grooves – the approach is never too commercial, and never softens up the funky rhythms at the bottom. Kiki plays keyboards, sings a bit, and does a great job on production – working under his own name, and with some other key projects as well. A really great chapter in the long and funky history of the musicians that also played in Lafayette Afro Rock Band and Cane & Abel – and a cool little set that may be one of the best records to ever come from the collective! The players work here as Ice – and come across like some of the best American funk collectives of the time – a group that's heavy on wah wah guitar over Fender Rhodes riffs, but which also features lots of searing solos in the middle – an instrumental intensity that sometimes dominates more than the vocals! A real shift in modes for the legendary Bert Jansch – as you might guess from the sunny Santa Barbara on the cover – which is a long way from the rainy roots of Bert's music in the UK! Jansch steps out here as maybe more of a singer than before, but still gets in plenty of his amazing work on guitar – on tunes that show a more confident approach, but one that's never too slick, nor commercial. This is hardly folk-into-AOR – and instead just uses the right sort of Cali touches to augment the genius of Jansch, without getting in his way at all – at a level that also has Bert really sounding wonderful on vocals. Titles include "Love Anew", "Mary And Joseph", "Be My Friend", "You Are My Sunshine", "Lost And Gone", "When The Teardrop Fell", "Build Another Band", "Dynamite", and "Buckrabbit" and more. CD includes 6 bonus tracks – an alternate version of "Build Another Band", plus 5 tracks live from Montreux in 1975. CD

Linval Thompson/Big Joe/TrinityTrojan Roots Collection (I Love Marijuana/African Princess/Rock In The Ghetto/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. Used 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of classic albums produced by Linval Thompson – with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Linval's I Love Marijuana record – an album with a striking title – and a set that really marked the full promise of Linval Thompson in the 70s – a dubby classic that's every bit as strong on the vocal side of Thompson's skills, as it is the production side! The album was recorded at Tubby's with the Revolutionaries band and an uncredited Junjo Lawes (who would later go on to cut some of the best dub albums ever, with Scientist) – and the vocals have this great style of cresting between sweeter modes and more biting modes – particularly when wrapped around the social themes that always made Thompson stand out. Titles include "I Love Marijuana", "Don't Push Your Brother", "Dread Are the Controller", "The Children of the Ghetto", "Not Follow Fashion", and "Jamaican Colley Version". African Princess is a set that features great DJ vocals from Big Joe – one of the lesser-knowns of the time, but a voice that's perfect for the rich sense of flow that Linval Thompson brings to the production – on titles that include "African Princess", "Big Disgrace", "Tubby At The Controls", "Smoke Marijuana", "Love Can Conquer", and "Pauline Love The Natty". Rock In The Ghetto is classic 70s work from Trinity – a Jamaican deejay singer who gets some excellent help on the set from Linval Thompson! Thompson mixes dubby modes with some sharper, crispier crackles at key moments – working as a nice way of punctuation to the moods delivered by Trinity's vocals – which are almost always in the righteous modes you'd guess from the title. Tracks include "Dangerous Rockers & Ting", "Pope Paul Dead & Gone", "Don't Lose Me", "Life Is Not Easy", "Don't Lose Me", "Every Trick In The Book", "Freedom Style", and "Rock In The Ghetto". 2CD set features 10 bonus tracks – titles that include "Lover's Style" and "Come On Baby Dub Style" by The Roots Radics, "Follow My Heart (12" mix)" and "Pope Paul Dead & Gone (12" mix)" by Trinity, "Mr CID" by Barry Brown, "There's A Song" by Pat Kelly, "King Tubby's Rockers" and "Second Hand Girl" by Scientist & Roots Radics, and "Here With Me" by Linval Thompson. ✨✧ VariousAfrica Boogaloo – The Latinization Of West Africa ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
A long-overdue collection of work – one that really gets at the unusual appearance of Latin rhythms on the African scene of the postwar years! Latin sounds from Africa are nothing new, but they're one of those things that's always taken for granted, too – kind of assumed in most discussions of the rhythms from the 60s onward, but never explained as fully as might be needed! Given the already-great grooves going down on the continent for generations, it's surprising that African musicians might pick up styles from Cuba and the Caribbean – yet due to the vagaries of global cultural circulation, that's exactly what happened – and the music has never been the same ever since. This really well-done package offers up a range of tracks from the 50s through the 70s – showing some of the earliest African extrapolations of Latin styles – clearly enforcing the "Afro" in Afro-Cuban rhythms – then moving onto some later grooves that offer up some funkier styles too. The work's a bridge between the ethnographic sets on Honest Jons, and some of the tighter grooves you might find on a Soul Jazz collection – a wonderful blend of music, packaged beautifully too. Titles include "A Moins Que Namikosa" by Orchestra OK Jazz, "Rampa Rampa" by Orchestre Yaya Mas, "Quiero Wapacha" by Charles Lembe, "Ven Y Ven Y Ven" by Orchestre OK Jazz, "Vamos A Bailar" by Rio Band, "Guantanamo" by Laba Sosseh, "On Verra Ca" by Orchestre Baobab, "Mi Guajeo" by Orchestre N'Guewel, "N'Niyo" by Amara Toure, "Il N'Est Jamais Trop Tard" by Pierre Tchana & Orchestre Poly Rhythmo, "Africa Boogaloo" by Le Grande Kalle with Don Gonzalo & Manu Dibango, and "Adigbedoto" by Gnonnas Pedro. Blue Note (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99
A great look at the way that the Blue Note record label renewed its commitment to jazz guitar in the 70s – finding some of the best new talents of the decade, and recording the instrument in a variety of different ways! The Blue Note jazz funk sides of the time are very well-known, but the music here is nicely expanded past those modes – to include some great mellow moments, fusion tracks, and even some numbers that completely defy easy description! There's a heck of a lot of great guitarists on the set – Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Robby Krieger, Dom Minasi, Ray Gomez, Reggie Lucas, Earl Klugh, John Rowin, Tommy Bolin, and Joe Beck – and CD2 is made entirely of tracks that feature David T Walker on guitar. Titles include "Night Whistler", "Sister Love", "Dance Band", and "Makin It" by Donald Byrd – plus "Some Neck" by Ronnie Foster, "Beginnings" and "Soft Cycles" by Gene Harris, "New York City" and "Golden Rainbows" by Alphonse Mouzon, "Baby's Gone" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Sitting Here All Alone" by The Waters, "New Day" and "Fever" by Ronnie Laws, "Only Women Bleed" by Carmen McRae, "RK Bossa" by Dom Minasi, "Gum Popper" by Robbie Krieger, "Andy's Walk" by Chico Hamilton, and the killer cuts "Mango Sunrise" and "Rise On" by John Lee & Gerry Brown. Big Crown, 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A sweet little tribute to the great Sunny Ozuna – the soulful lead singer of The Sunliners, who were one of the best Texas soul groups back in the 60s! His original tunes virtually invented the concept of brown-eyed soul, and helped bridge communities in the process – and that spirit is definitely holding strong here, in a set of contemporary interpretations of classics cut by Sunny & The Sunliners – all handled in the best Big Crown way! If you know the label, you'll know that they're very tied to sounds of the past – so all the artists here really live up to the spirit of Sunny's music – and show that these overlooked classic cuts are ripe for rediscovery by a whole new generation. Titles include "Smile Now Cry Later" by The Shacks, "Give Me Time" by Liam Bailey, "The One Who's Hurting Is You" by Lee Fields & The Expressions, "My Dream" by 79.5, "Runaway" by Brainstory, "Rain Makes Me Blue" by Paul & The Tall Trees, "Talk To Me" by Lizette & Quevin, "Should I Take You Home" by Bobby Orozona, "Get Down" by Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, and "If I Could See You Now" by Holy Hive. VariousEnglish Weather ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
One of the coolest compilations we've ever heard from Ace Records – a really special set that follows in the tradition of their other St Etienne cafe/pub collections – and like those gems, a very different package than usual! This time around, the duo of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (who you'll also know from the Croydon International label) focus on an overlooked strand of British sounds at the start of the 70s – music that's moody, often jazzy, and almost always touched with a hint of blue – a kind of melancholic moment after the heady 60s – one that takes into stock all the great changes that had happened in the music, but delivers them in this laidback style that's completely unselfconscious. This isn't singer/songwriter material, and it's not progressive either – although it carries light traces of some of the best of those scenes – and if we had to try to dig for a tag for these tracks at all, we might use the term "folk funk" that was bandied about years ago – for cuts that have a vibe that's complex yet personal, and lots of jazziness in the phrasing. Titles include "Last Cloud Home" by The Orange Bicycle, "Love Song With Flute" by Caravan, "Moon Bird" by The Roger Webb Sound, "Early Morning Eyes" by The Peacock Band, "JTL" by T2, "Evening Shade" by Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw, "Windfall" by Offspring, "Never Let Go" by Camel, "Bottles" by Belle Gonzalez, "Watching White Stars" by The Way We Live, "Wise Man In Your Heart" by Daevid Allen, "Til The Christ Come Back Home" by Bill Fay, "Pamela" by Scot Mist, and "O Caroline" by Matching Mole – a song which perfectly sums up the mood of the set. BBE (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
A fantastic collection of Ethiopian funk – rare singles from the late 60s and early 70s – all brought together as an amazing illustration of a time when the scene was really on fire! The music here has this incredible resonance between ancient and modern – local and global – as older instrumental modes and singing styles get inflected with drums, basslines, and horn parts that are strongly influenced by American funk and soul – all at a level that makes for one of the most mindblowing mixes of music you'll ever hear! The "stompers" in the title is very well-chosen – as many of these grooves are maybe even more floor-shaking than conventional funk – with a different rhythmic structure than American styles, but an end result that's even more powerful overall. Titles include "Ewnetegna Feker" by Hirut Bekele, "Endiet Zengeshiw" by Selomon Shibeshi, "Alkedashim" by Birkineh Wurga, "Hasabe" by Teshome Meteku, "Mela Mela" by Seifu Hohannes, "Sigibgib Joroye" by Tilahun Gessesse, "Fikrishin Eshaleyu" by Getatchew Kassa, "Alagegnhwatem" by Muluken Melesse, "Ene Yewodedquat" by Tamrat Molla, "Felagote" by Bezunesh Bekele & Bodyguard Band, "Temeles" by Hirut Bekele & Alemayehu Eshete, and "Teleyeshign" by Merawi Yohannis. VariousLocal Customs – Lone Star Lowlands ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Rare rock from the Golden Triangle scene of Southeast TX in the late 60s and early 70s – a well-curated overview of the stylistically sprawling material being cut at Mickey Rouse's Lowland Recording Studio in Beaumont! Texas rock of the late 60s and early 70s justifiably brings to mind acts like The 13th Floor Elevators and The Bubble Puppy – tripped out psychedelia in other words, but Texas is huge, and there was a heck of a lot more going on than just the best remembered cult favorites. The music coming out of just the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, Texas "triangle" chronicled here was incredibly diverse. It includes proto TX boogie rock that's a clear precursor to early ZZ Top, harmony flavored numbers that sound closer to Cali than they do The Lone Star State, one track that somehow fuses CS&N with The Beatles and does so with prominent cowbell in the mix (and it's good!!!), punchy psych grit, and swaggering country rock with some twang in the strings that feels a bit more profoundly Texan. You don't need our word that The Numero Group has devoted some serious attention to detail – with a 35-page booklet of notes, photos and histories, plus the impressive Lost In The Golden Triangle "family tree" of the regional musicians involved – as if discovering these long buried regional relics wasn't impressive enough already. Beautiful! 22 tracks in all: "Trash One" by the Lowland Studio Band, "Live My Life Today" by Insight Out, "Simple House" by Mother Lion, "Love Of The Morning" by Circus, "Take A Look At Your Friends" by Next Exit, "You Know I Love You" by Roy Briggs & Alton Tew, "Calling Me Home (Demo)" by Donald Thomas and more. One of the coolest projects we've heard from Rich Medina in years – a killer compilation that brings together older Afro Funk tracks from the 70s with a big amount of cuts from more contemporary years – all with a blend that pushes the spirit of the continent way out into the cosmos! Medina's always been one of the most forward-thinking artists in the underground – and you can definitely hear that quality in this set – as Rich effortlessly steps back and forth in space and time, to create a unified sound that bristles with electricity, while still reveling in all the key acoustic elements from the 70s. Numero, 1970s. New Copy ... $7.99 20.99
A really tremendous batch of dark-themed tunes from the American underground of the 70s – a treasure trove of under-discovered acts who were all inspired by the deeper brooding of the Led Zep and Black Sabbath generation! Unlike later manifestations from the indie scene, the work here isn't really heavy metal – and instead has this more complex approach – ready and able to spin out their own tales and stories in the space of a full length concept album, guided by their own unique myths and mysteries – even though most of these tracks only ever saw the light of day on 7" singles, as the bands mostly never got the chance to serve up a full-length set. Leave it to Numero to do a perfect job of bringing this underground together through their vivid notes and great images for the set – and no surprise, there's some occasional funky touches on a few of the tunes – especially on the drums. This is the kind of stuff the stoners in your high school wish they were hip enough to know about – and titles include "Warlord" by Wrath, "Twelve O'Clock Satanial" by Air, "Sealed In A Grave" by Triton Warrior, "Dark Days" by Space Rock, "Sweet Child" by Gorgon Medusa, "Cry For The Newborn" by Hellstorm, "Tasmania" by Stoned Mace, and "Seance" by Wizard. Buda (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
One of our favorite entries so far in the Zanzibara series – a great set of grooves from the late 70s and early 80s – warmly laidback material, with a bubbling undercurrent of funk, and a sound that's somewhat different from other African material we've heard from the time! The rhythms often dip and turn slowly – almost with a watery feel, as the basslines groove up and down in midtempo waves of sound – often woven together with some tighter guitar parts, which also dance along nicely – topped by vocals that have a sweet undercurrent of sadness, too. The package is a great way to sample some of these lesser-heard gems – and it's put together with the same level of care you'd expect from Buda's Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Uzuri Wa Asili", "Baba Anna", "Rufani Ya Kifo", and "Mwana Acha Ujinga" by Dar International Orchestre; "Talaka Ya Hasira", "Nawashukuru Wazazi Wangu", "Taxi Driver", and "Kassim Amefilisika" by Mlimani Park Orchestra; and "Nilitaka Iwe Siri" by Vijana Dance Band. ✨✧ Beginning Of The EndFunky Nassau ... LP
Alston/Strut (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monster bit of funk that's unlike anything else we can think of! Beginning Of The End hailed from The Bahamas, but don't hold that against them – because instead of being a Caribbean cliche, they took the best part of the island rhythms, and used them to forge an incredible approach to funk! They've got a choppy sound that's the result of some incredibly dexterous guitar, bass, and drums – and which you'll recognize instantly from their one-time hit "Funky Nassau", a killer funk track that never gets old, no matter how many bands cover it over the years! That gem kicks off the album, which then rolls into the monster funky "part 2", which is even better! Other titles are equally wonderful – and include "Come Down", "Surrey Ride", "Monkey Tamarind", and "In The Deep". Essential – and one that you'll be spinning for years! LP, Vinyl record album
(New vinyl edition – remastered from the original master tapes!)

✨✧ BloPhases 1972 to 1982 ... CD
Strut (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Collected work by Blo – a hip Nigerian funk ensemble from the mid 70s! The group have a more complicated sound than some of their contemporaries – adding in dubbier stylings and bits of psychedelic guitar to the more common Afro-Funk percussion – in a mode that almost sounds like it's got traces of Can or other proggish groups, as you might hear on some of Tony Allen's more recent work, or on some of the early 70s Brit post-colonial crossover bands, like Assagai or Cymande. It all makes for a very interesting sound – marking the group as one of the most unique of their generation! Titles include "Blo", "It's Gonna Be A Good Day", "Number One", "Trace of Suicide", "Atide", "Don't Take Her Away From Me", and "Miss Sagit". CD
