Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". CMU (Contemporary Music Unit)Open Spaces (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... LP
Folkways, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... About May 22, 2020 (delayed)
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Music Improvisation CompanyMusic Improvisation Company 1969/1970 ... LP
Incus/Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Incredible work from a group that forever changed the face of British jazz – and which really found a way for improvised music to exist in a space that's all its own! The "company" is really a quartet – with Derek Bailey on guitar, Evan Parker on soprano sax, Hugh Davies on organ and electronics, and Jamie Muir on percussion – working in a way that's definitely got plenty of free jazz elements, but which also occasionally resonates with experiments in electro-acoustic sound from the 60s – yet at a level that's much warmer and personal, which is the sensibility that important improvisers like this can really bring to the music! Parker also plays a bit of amplified auto harp, which is great – and titles include "In The Victim's Absence", "Pointing", "Bedrest", "Untitled 3", "Untitled 4", and "Its Tongue Trapped To The Rock By A Limpet The Water Rat Succumbed To The Incoming Tide". Roxy MusicRoxy Music – Steven Wilson Stereo Mix (colored vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Atco, 1972. New Copy ... On August 29, 2020
A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". (Note: Record Store Day 2020 has been rescheduled to separate special release days of August 29, September 26 and October 24. The specific release date for each previously announced title is yet to be announced and subject to change. Titles are in limited supply – and will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago on August 29, September 26 and October 24 only if it is safe and responsible to open the store, with Covid-19 shelter in place orders no longer in place. ✨✧ African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $31.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. Titles include "Neo Dancer", "And", "Repeat", "Membership Card", "Romantic Romance", and "Recovery Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian BriggsSelected Music From The Album Brain Damage ... LP
Bearsville/Get On Down, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99 14.98
A great lost record of minimalist club – a set that we'd rank right up there with classics by Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, or some of the other most creative talents on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! As with work by those other two artists, there's an experimental approach here, but one that's very very groovy – mostly just spare beats, loose instrumentation, and other sounds – woven together in ways that certainly have strong post-punk inspiration, but which can also work perfectly on a dancefloor too! This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (5LP set) ... LP
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 5LP ... $89.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! LP, Vinyl record album

Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 34.99
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums in a single package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". LP, Vinyl record album

Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Cosmic Neighbourhood move into the realm of sound library music with this delightful little record – a 10" album that's filled with short, captivating tunes – mostly melodic, and with electronic components, but delivered in a style that's really organic, and very beautiful! At some level, the music almost feels like a more condensed take on some of the Japanese ambient modes of years past – but with a faster progression of ideas, given the shortness of the tunes. Yet there's also something maybe a bit more universal – as if Cosmic Neighbourhood have found a way to create the sort of little tunes that might be rumbling around somewhere out there in nature. The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the set are simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals! Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About March 1, 2020 (delayed)
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. Ethnic Heritage EnsembleBe Known Ancient/Future/Music (deluxe 2LP edition) ... LP
Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $41.99 44.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". Gritness AcoustronicsMahakali – The Music Of Don Cherry ... LP
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
A really different take on the music of Don Cherry – but one that we're guessing Don would have really approved of himself! The "acoustronics" in the group's name slightly gives away the vibe – as there's definitely acoustic elements, but also a fair bit of electronics – of the sort that Cherry was embracing more in the mid 80s, as part of his continuing musical journey from jazz, to global realms, to territory that might resonate more with the sound of the streets! There's no trumpet at all on the record, but Vincent Thekal plays tenor and soprano, to hold on to a jazz component – amidst lots of drum machine and keyboard parts from leader Gary Gritness, plus more from Olivier Portal – both musicians who somehow manage to evoke the global currents of earlier Don Cherry music, but in a very different way. Nelson/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $28.99
Great grooves from this legendary sound library combo from the Italian scene of the 70s – but a set that also features some of their more unusual, offbeat styles too! We've stocked plenty of records by I Marc 4 over the years – and have always loved them for their tight blend of jazz, funk, and instrumental soundtrack modes – but this set shows the combo at their most creative, as there's often some cool effects and unusual sounds added to the blend of their more familiar elements – so that the record seems to shift from spooky to groovy and back again with effortless ease! If you're thinking that you've already got some I Marc 4 records in your collection, then think again – as there's a lot of new sounds here to discover, pulled from their very rare limited recordings for the Nelson label in the Telecinesound Studios – titles that include "Giallo", "Tensione Ed Attesa", "Temporale", "Atmosfere Spaziali", "Tema Di Raven 1o Vers", "Thrilling Mortale", "Smookie", "Immagini", "Corsa Pericolosa", "Ossessione Omicida", and "Suspence Subacqueo". Dreamy sounds from Iasos – an early proponent of the world of new age music, but one that's far hipper than the bigger-label acts to come in the 80s! This set is beautifully spare and meditative – two side-long tracks, each a kind of warmer, more sentimental take on territory that Brian Eno was exploring with his ambient music projects – inflected maybe with a slightly spiritual vibe, as you'd guess from the title! Instrumentation is mostly electric, but used in ways that also really show the manner in which these early American pioneers of the format were marking their own space away from German electronic experimentation. The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and which could work well as some of the shorter link tracks on an early 70s Impulse album. Samuel Jonathan JohnsonMy Music ... LP
Columbia/Be With (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of our favorite 70s soul records ever – and a totally unique set as well! To our ears, Samuel Jonathan Johnson belongs in the company of Roy Ayers, Norman Connors, and other spiritual soul heavyweights – even though he only ever cut this one album for Columbia Records back in 1978! The set's got a really visionary feel – keyboards that compare with the best mellow soul lines of Donny Hathaway, and a vocal style that's got some of the range of Ronnie McNeir, mixed with a more human approach to the lyrics that makes the whole thing wonderfully personal, too. There's lots of jazzy elements on the Fender Rhodes lines – which bubble beautifully on the mellow moments, and step out boldly on the album's few groovers – making for a richness that goes way beyond the vocals, and which puts Johnson in the company of DJ Rogers or Webster Lewis. Forgive us if we keep name-dropping like that – but the set's a stunning treasure from an artist who should have gotten the same sort of recognition as all the best soul talents of the 70s. The title track – "My Music" – has an amazing bit of bubbling synth intro (and outro), cool spacey vocals by Sam, and a mellow, but tight groove that sounds a bit like something that Roy Ayers might have cooked up – and it leads off an incredible album of other titles that include "Sweet Love", "Just Us", "You", "Reason For The Reason", "Because I Love You", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Yesterdays & Tomorrow", and "Thank You Mother Dear". An amazing solo effort from Harrison Kennedy – a record that's quite different than his work with Chairmen Of The Board, and a set that's easily one of the most compelling albums ever issued on the Invictus Records label! The set's nice and funky at times – the heaviest expression of that early 70s Holland Dozier Holland groove – but there's also moments that have kind of a playful, offbeat mode that's almost folksy soul – hard to peg adequately in words, but touched with these acoustic elements that are quite different than Kennedy's work with the Chairmen. The oddity of the record almost puts it in Rodriguez territory – especially given the raspy charm of Harrison's vocals – and titles include "Night Comes Day Goes", "Gimme A Glass Of Water", "Hypnotic Music", "Closet Queen", and "Up The Organization". Wall MatthewsSpine River – The Guitar Music Of Wall Matthews 1967 to 1981 ... LP
Tompkins Square, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
Sublime solo guitar work from Wall Matthews – a musician who's maybe best known for his work in the group Entourage, who issued two 70s albums on Folkways – although that group is also pretty darn obscure too! Matthews has a great sound here – a solo acoustic mode that's filled with experimental elements, but also very down to earth – part of the 60s legacy of Robbie Basho and John Fahey, but also graced with a chromatic sensibility that points the way towards the direction of William Ackerman. Those references are all pretty huge in our mind, and very well-attached here – on a beautiful set of tracks that should get Wall a much larger place in the acoustic underground. Titles include "Spine River", "The Doves Of Venus", "Wendy's Piece", "The Dance In Your Eye", "Roping", "Kotokes", and "Walk In A Country Rain". LP, Vinyl record album

WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $34.99
Incredible sounds from Japanese composer Yoshio Ojima – music created for the Spiral art center in Tokyo – one of the most beautiful buildings we've ever visited in the city! The spot is a special blend of art and commerce – and the music by Ojima shifts between the sorts of sounds you might hear in an installation, and work that's similar to some of the environmental music of his contemporaries – all delivered with spare electronics and a minimalist mode that really shows the fantastic direction some of these Japanese composers were taking after the initial Brian Eno experiments with ambient music, particularly Music For Airports. Titles on this volume include "Mensis", "#1", "Glass Chattering", "Entomology", "Flius", "Entrance", "Float On", and "Esplanade (live)". LP, Vinyl record album

Tidal Waves, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
A set recorded in Paris during the early 80s – but headed up by an American saxophonist, and done with a vibe that's like the best spiritual jazz modes of the 70s! Byron Pope has a compelling legacy that includes work with Burton Greene and Alan Silva – but he's definitely his own man here, working at the head of a group that's rich in organic rhythms, and which has a really great sense of flow – always moving forward with new ideas, bringing complex ideas into play with a down to earth sensibility in their sound! Pope's sound is great – nice and crisp – and other players include Georges-Edouard Nouel on piano, Roger Raspail on percussion, and Chris Henderson on drums – on titles that include "Shades Of", "No Boundaries", "Third Eyes", "This Way", and "Face Reality". ✨✧ Chano PozoRumbero Mayor – An Overview Of The Legendary Afro-Cuban Conguero That Changed Latin Music & Jazz Forever ... LP
Grosso! (Spain), 1940s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99
A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. Sons Of SlumMusic Is The Message ... LP
Cordial (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $22.99
Fantastic funk from Sons Of Slum – a 70s Chicago combo with a sound that's as heavy as their name! You might know the group from some killer singles they cut for Stax in the early 70s – but this set features unreleased material from later in the decade, showing an even cooler band than on those earlier records! Instrumentally, these guys have the tightness of the young Earth Wind & Fire, maybe mixed with some of the righteous currents of 24 Carat Black – and the vocals are often sung in this style that has edgey harmonies that remind us of The Notations, especially when they hit their more sinister style at Curtom. The whole thing's tremendous – one of those funk records that should have been issued back in the day, and which would have been on collector and DJ lists for decades if that was the case – which makes it a hell of a discovery all these many years later. Titles include "Show Me Tell Me", "Spirit", "Save The Children", "Music Is The Message", "Funky Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Breakout", "Running", and "Get Your Thing Together". LP, Vinyl record album

Tomasz StankoMusic 81 – Polish Jazz Vol 69 ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A lost chapter in the career of Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko – better known for his recent recordings on ECM, and his classic 60s work with Komeda – but sounding surprisingly great here as well! The album's a relatively straight set of tracks that feature Stanko with a quartet – blowing in a mode that's more forthcoming than on some of his experimental and ethereal sessions – using an earthy tone that seems to dig into the dirt, and come up with bold, new notes. A few tracks have a feel that's a bit like that of Freddie Hubbard in the same period – particularly on the recordings where he was moving back to straight jazz, from electric work. But Stanko's tone is something fierce on the set, and unique his own – especially on the album's few more exploratory numbers. Titles include "Ahuha", "Third Heavy Ballad", "Alusta", and "Daada". Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $26.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". Svart (Finland), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
Finland's been giving us some great funk and soul sounds in recent years, but that legacy stretches back much longer than we might have guessed – to a point that includes all these groovy disco and electronic dance tracks from the 80s! The set's a follow-up to the Satan In Love compilation, which charted similar territory – but this one moves more into a world that's influenced by some of the electro pop modes that were coming out of the UK in the early 80s, with maybe a touch of the European disco of the decade before – especially in the style of some of the female singers here, who could just as easily have been working with Munich Machine, or some of the other German and Italian groups. Lyrics are mostly in Finnish, but the keyboards, drum machines, and basslines are universal – on titles that include "Jossakin Jos Halaut" by Eini, "Jupiter" by Jori Sivonen, "Big & Beautiful" by Visual, "Night Is Like Magic" by Biba, "Hi Jacker" by Buffalo Soldier, "Sormus" by Clifters, "Grandmaster Klaus" by Mad Lindell, "Nuori Inka" by Jarmo Juhani, "Robotin USA" by Vaarallinen Mutanti, "Cold War On The Rocks" by Step On The Other Side, and "Tahdenlento" by Mika Sundqvist. Odion Livingstone (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
Sweet grooves from the Duomo Sounds label – a short-lived Nigerian imprint who cut some mighty funky sounds at the start of the 80s! The title here uses the word "disco", but these cuts have none of the strings and polish of the sounds you'd hear at Studio 54 – as most numbers here are stripped-down and raw, really more in a clubbier take on the more famous Nigerian funk of a few years before! However, there's also a quality here that could easily cross over to the hipper clubs on the New York underground – as most of these guys are also using the same sort of small combo funk instrumentation of the best of the indie post-disco scene – which means that some tracks resonate with the work of labels like P&P, and others echo some of the more global currents that were showing up in New York funk during the period! Most lyrics are in English, which further gives these tracks a universal appeal – and titles include "Perfect Disco Machine" and "Disco Connection" by Bindinga, "Aimiuugwia" and "Advice" by Christy Ogbah, "Bazz Xmas Eve" by Johnny O, "Look At Me" and "Shake You Body" by Mike Umoh, "You Do Good You Do For Yourself" by Godfrey Odili, "On My Mind" by Bassey Black & The Natty Messiah, and "Ariro" by Eunice Mokus Arimoku. Nashboro/Third Man, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel recordings from the legendary Nashboro Records – one of the most important imprints for the music back in the 50s and 60s! We rank the work of Nashboro right up with the famous Houston-bred productions of Peacock Records – and as Peacock was part of the secular soul label Duke, Nashboro was also part of the blues powerhouse Excello – which means that the cuts here are put together at a level that's maybe got as much understanding of the needs of the record racks and jukebox scene, as they are aimed at the higher ideals of the lyrics! Nashboro excelled especially in the sorts of small vocal groups that can make gospel singles from this time every bit as much a slice of harmony heavy as rare doo wop tracks – and titles here include "Seven Angels" by The Trumpeteers, "Just One Step" by Little Johnny Jones & The Little Jones Singers, "I Received My Blessing" by Radio Four, "Touch Me Lord Jesus" by Angelic Gospel Singers, "Give Me My Flowers" by The Consolers, "I Would Not Be A Sinner" by Dixie Nightingales, "Jesus Keeps Me Alive" by The Skylarks, "Sit Down Servant" by Swanee Quintet, "When Jesus Stays Home" by Southern Echoes Singers, and "Rest From My Labor" by Supreme Angels. 16 cuts in all – and very nicely done! 60s soul treasures – served up here in glorious mono – all as part of this wonderful tribute to the legendary Loma Records label! Loma was a small imprint that was part of Warner Brothers in the late 60s – and acted more like an LA-based indie label, with a quality level that rivals the best from New York, Detroit, and Chicago at the time – even Memphis, given that Loma had a surprisingly great ear for deep soul – in a way that few west coast imprints had during the 60s. The mix of modes here is wonderful – from upbeat groovers, to female soul killers, to some especially hard-burning male vocal numbers – in a set list that includes "The Dam Busted" by Carl Hall, "You Can't Outsmart A Woman" by Kell Osborne, "Too Late" by JJ Jackson, "Good Time" by The Mighty Hannibal, "Help Yourself" by Larry Lester, "Callin" by Lonnie Youngblood, "Your Search is Over" by Walter Foster, "Rainin In My Heart" by The Olympics, "There's Something On Your Mind (part 1)" by Baby Lloyd, and "Try" by Lorraine Ellison. Loma/Future Days, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 22.99
Major labels didn't always get soul music as well as the indies back in the 60s – but there's one exception to that myth, the mighty Loma Records label from Warner Brothers! The company had a near-perfect run during its few years in business – killer soul singles that are every bit as prized by collectors as some of the more obscure records on tiny labels from the time – and which are handled with a quality level that's never too commercial, never as slick as you'd expect from a bigger company that was also handling easy listening and pop during the same period. Instead, the Loma legacy is a mighty deep run of greatness – as you'll hear on this stunning third volume in the series – with titles that include "The Shadow Of Your Love" by Bobby Freeman, "I Paid For The Party" by The Enchanters, "Can't Win" by The Invicibles, "Better Think Of What You're Losing" by Tommy Starr, "If This Ain't Love" by The Realistics, "Don't Come A Knockin" by Mary Lee Whitney, "Sad Sad Feeling (part 1)" by The Autographs, and "I Wanna Love You So Bad" by Bobby Reed. Rare work from the mighty Loma Records label – including a few never-issued tracks from the Los Angeles powerhouse of soul! Loma's music has already been compiled strongly on the previous three volumes in this series, but this volume maybe goes even further – to offer up a batch of other classic Loma singles, along with some equally nice cuts from the vault – the kind of music that really makes us wonder what would have happened if the imprint had kept on putting out soul music well into the 70s! There's a rock-solid, forward-thinking quality here that's totally great – overlooked talents and a few bigger names – all working here at the height of their powers. Ace (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 32.99
A wild assortment of music from an equally wild source – a BBC Radio program hosted by Jarvis Cocker, presented on Sunday mornings as a way to relax and reach some sort of deeper spiritual consciousness! The show was never churchy – but maybe an attempt to find a new sort of inner peace during the modern age – with a selection of songs in a really great range, all linked by the dry wit and understated presence of Cocker as an announcer. This set brings together key tracks from the early years of the show – music that spans decades, and runs from jazz vocal numbers, to electronic music nuggets, 70s AOR, underground folk, and a number of more recent tracks that show that Jarvis has continually had his ear on the rock underground around the globe. The blend is incredibly hard to describe in words, but a delight to hear on record – and the whole thing comes with detailed notes on the track selections from Cocker himself. Titles include "Snowed In" by Tim Rose, "Day Glo" by Serafina Steer, "Cold Rain" by Alternative TV, "Won't That Be A Happy Time" by Joseph & Louis Spence, "Old Molly Metcalfe" by Jake Thackery, "Waters Of March" by Art Garfunkel, "It's A Quiet Thing" by Morgana King, "Rock Intro" by Miranda July, "After The Gold Rush" by The King's Singers, "Invasion Muzak" by John Baker, "True Love Will Find You In The End" by Headless Heroes, "Cars" by The Katzenjammers, "Crazy In Love" by Antony & The Johnsons, "Don't Wait Too Long" by Bob Welch, "Baltimore" by Nina Simone, "December" by David Cain/Derek Boswell, "Gynopedie No 3" by Camarata Contemporary Chamber Group, and "The Interrogative Mood" by Jarvis Cocker & David Cunningham. One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! The album's best known for its title hit "Jungle Fever" – an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that's peppered with sounds of female pleasure! The track was a worldwide hit, and continues to be a funky classic today – thanks to a heavy sample history, and a life in playlists worldwide – but the rest of the album's pretty darn great too, and even weirder. Some tracks mix easy Euro grooving with heavy conga, others have kind of an LA Chicano funk approach, and still others throw in some mad horns to complicate matters with nice jazzy riffing. Really great throughout – and maybe one of the best funky albums to ever come out on a major label! A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. A beautiful set of hipster jazz vocals! This legendary album by Pittsburgh pianist Frank Cunimondo has always been a favorite for the jazz-dance groover "Feelin Good" – a cut which has an incredible drum and bass riff, and which has been sampled more than a few times over the past few years. But even above that track, the whole album's pretty darn great – and it features an excellent set of vocals by the lovely Lynn Marino, a very unique vocalist with a sweet style that's sort of like Blossom Dearie. Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 28.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagitarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! LP, Vinyl record album

Da LataBirds ... LP
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Das EFX's third album finds them holding down a more jam-packed approach than ever before – longer by half than their previous LPs and with a strong sense of purpose! Das EFX appeared with such a unique rhyme style, by this point they really needed to balance the tasks of being recognizable as as the hard-hitting duo with the distinctive approach to rhymes, without relying on it as a gimmick, and here they largely succeed – with production from Premier, Showbiz, Easy Mo Bee, Klark Kent, DJ Scratch and more. Miles DavisBlack Beauty – Miles Davis At Fillmore West (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sony/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $38.99 39.99
Four sides of noisy, funky, stretched-out playing from Miles Davis – recorded at the Fillmore West, but with an intensity that matches some of Miles' crazy electric recordings from Japan during the early 70s! The music is a powerful blast of music that stretches out over the double-length set of the package – with a style that moves from heavy-duty avant playing, then back to more mellow grooving, then kicks it out nice and hard again – a heavy dose of rock mixed in with the fusion, but still plenty jazzy throughout. In all, the record is probably one of the most heavy-duty that the Miles electric group recorded in the 70s – and the lineup on the set features Steve Grossman on saxes, Chick Corea on electric piano, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion. Tracks include "Spanish Key", "Directions", "Masqualero", "It's About That Time", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Bitches Brew", "Willie Nelson", and "Sanctuary". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the spookiest soundtracks ever crafted by one of our favorite film composers of all time! Francois DeRoubaix always had this amazing style to his music – unlike anyone else, especially in the way he could blend together spare acoustic elements and unusual sonic and electronic touches! There's a very intimate feel to the record – almost as if Francois is performing most of the sounds in the studio himself – balancing a guitar line with a keyboard fill, a bowed bass bit with drums, soaring strings with trumpet, and so on – occasionally hitting some funky touches that really keep things interesting – and which makes some of DeRoubaix best work on a par with the genius of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier! Titles include "The Countess Kiss", "Phantom Organ & Piano", "Pursuit On The Dunes Of Ostend", "Accident & Cymbalum", "Love On The Rails", "Red Lips", "Ballad In Bruges", and "The Dunes Of Ostend Flagellation". Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". Atco/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An unusual album in the Atlantic career of Donny Hathaway – and a unique collaboration with the legendary Quincy Jones! The music here is Hathaway's sole entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack genre of the 70s – penned for film version of a Chester Himes novel, and scored in a mix of funky 70s modes and other more standard jazz styles. Quincy's on board as the "musical supervisor" – and clearly helps Donny focus his energies towards the hipper side of the soundtrack spectrum, especially on the more contemporary styled tracks. And although most of the work here is instrumental, Hathaway also sings a bit too – most famously on the classic "Little Ghetto Boy" – which is easily one of Donny's greatest tracks ever! Other titles include "Come Back Charleston Blue", with vocals by Margie Joseph, plus "Bossa Nova", "Tim's High", "Hearse To Graveyard", "Harlem Dawn", "String Segue", "Furniture Truck", and "Liberation". Seminal sounds from The Heptones – and a record that really helped the older trio style of Jamaican music find a new home in the 70s roots reggae years! The vocals here are every bit as much in harmony heaven as reggae trios from a few years before – but there's also a tighter, more righteous quality to the music that really makes the record a classic – with stunning lead vocals from Leroy Sibbles, fused tightly with the voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn, in this style that's smoothly soulful, but still has a nicely edgey undercurrent too. The record was cut at Harry J's, with production that really steps past earlier Heptones work – and titles include "Country Boy", "Book Of Rules", "Deceivers", "In The Groove", "Love Won't Come Easy", "Fatty Fatty", and "Mama Say". An incredible record from funky drummer Idris Muhammad! Idris is probably known for his funky break work on Blue Note and Prestige records sessions of the late 60s and early 70s – but by the time of this 1974 album, he was really expanding his style, hitting a laidback groove that went way beyond the simple drum break, into a world of complicated fills and riffs that forever changed the face of funk. The best example of this is the album's standout groove – the massive cut "Loran's Dance", which has a mellow jazzy vibe that you'll recognize from its popular use as a sample cut over the years (by the Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow, and others.) All cuts are long and mellow, and other titles include "Power Of Soul", "Saddest Thing" and "Piece of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

If there's anyone who could make the idea of Italian westerns and Jamaican grooves come together, it's the young Lee Scratch Perry – the mad musician who always had a great talent for mixing it up! Eastwood Rides Again follows the theme of The Upsetters previous classic, Return Of Django – and like that one, the groove isn't just the rocksteady rhythms you'd expect – but also maybe this more spacious version of the style, with a bit more space between the notes than some of their Kingston contemporaries – almost a mode that could be inspired by the spacious soundtrack scoring of the Italian scene, then delivered with a much grittier vibe. This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever – a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work – done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock – all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style – but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk – and the set includes great covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire", plus great original tracks like "Sagar (The Ocean)", "Snow Flower", "Dance Indra", and "Metamorphosis". The mighty Sly Dunbar, working here on drums, in some very heady company – a wicked dub-heavy group that includes longtime partner Robbie Shakespear on bass – plus Gladdy Anderson on piano, Ansel Collins on organ, and Bingy Bunny and Bo Peep on guitars! At a time when Sly was breaking big in the mainstream, working on lots of imported productions too, the groove is still very down to earth, and back to the amazing sound that he and his confreres first brought to the Kingston scene much earlier in the 70s. Atlantic/Warner/Music On Vinyl (Spain), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The first album from Carla Thomas – and one of the first full statements from the burgeoning Stax Records scene of the early 60s! Carla was part of the Stax scene almost from the start – thanks in part to the fact that her father was Rufus Thomas – and she scored big with her own original composition "Gee Whiz, Look At His Eyes" – a single so successful that Stax let Atlantic handle the first full album by Carla, instead of issuing it themselves. The record's got a much sweeter sound than some of Carla's later work – with an approach that's almost uptown soul, and which sets Carla's little girl vocal style amidst fuller arrangements that have a lot of "classy" overtones. The result is a classic bit of 60s soul – and the album features some great original tracks that include "Gee Whiz", "It Ain't Me", "For You", and "A Love Of My Own" – plus versions of "Your Love", "To The Aisle", and "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening". Hot Mix 5/Still Music, 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $27.99
A killer classic from a time when the Chicago house scene was really taking off – that second generation of underground productions that was tagged with the "acid" term, because of the way they were using older riffs and keyboards to change things up! The Brits got that all wrong, and thought the word was a drug reference – and ended up taking way too much E in the process – but in Chicago, the term meant a new sort of sophistication for house music, and a warmer sound than the first few years too – deeper soul, more interesting keyboard parts, and a door opening to vocals and other elements that would help build a bridge between underground club and a rising tide in the mainstream. There's few records that document that shift as well as this one – a gem on the Hot Mix 5 label, put together by Mickey Oliver, who also had a hand in some of the music too. A record that's brimming over with pride for the new musical grooves coming out of Kingston – and a rare compilation on the legendary Treasure Isle record from producer Duke Reid! The tunes here are great and gritty – almost as if Reid was finding a way to capture the energy of a sound system in the studio – with lots of booming beats, rumbling basslines, and the kind of standout instrumental and vocal passages that give each tune a special sort of hook! A classic compilation from the Chicago scene – one that stood as one of the key full-length releases of house music that was bubbling under in the Windy City – important at the time, as most other albums of house music were from overseas labels issuing Chicago recordings! As you'd guess from the title, Mickey Oliver's at the helm throughout – producing the work with a nicely soulful quality – one that takes things a bit past some of the starker, colder modes that sometimes showed up on Trax Records – and which really illustrates that great second chapter as Chicago house was maturing a bit. The beats are nice and crispy throughout, the keyboards get cool and moody – and titles include "I Can't Stop For You" by Pierre's Fantasy Club, "Take It To The Top" by Joe Magic, "House Rights" by Phortune, "Suavesito" by Ralphi Rosario, "I Want Your Love" by Jamie, "Lost Me Boy" by Mickey Oliver with Dari Mor, and "Anticipate" and "I Need A Beat" by Mickey Oliver. ✨✧ Baby HueyBaby Huey Story – The Living Legend (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Curtom/Music On Vinyl (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic! The lost link in the Chicago soul scene of the 60s was Baby Huey – and he was a pretty darn big link too, if you've ever seen him in pictures! Weighing in at about 300 pounds, Baby Huey was sort of a rockin' soul star who played clubs on both sides of the city, to audiences of all types – working in a party-styled blend of funk, rock, and soul that was one of the most powerful grooves going down in the Windy City at the time! Huey sadly passed away at a very young age, leaving only this full album as his legacy – a great batch of hard-hitting soul tracks that are among some of the funkiest work ever recorded for the legendary Curtom label! The set includes Huey's classic version of "Mighty, Mighty", a club favorite from the live shows – plus the excellent Curtis Mayfield tune "Hard Times", famous as an oft-used sample track! Other titles include "A Change Is Going To Come", "California Dreamin", "Running", and "Mama Get Yourself Together". LP, Vinyl record album

Muhal Richard AbramsCelestial Birds (with bonus download) ... LP
Karl (UK), 1968/1980/1989/1995. New Copy ... $22.99
A limited vinyl collection of work from the legendary Chicago pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – one of the founding members of the AACM, a hell of an improviser, and a musician who's also featured here with a focus on both his larger compositional vision, and some of his rare electronic performances! Side one features the classic "The Bird Song" from the late 60s – a long piece that features Anthony Braxton on alto, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Thurman Barker on drums, and Abrams on piano and clarinet – plus some vocals from David Moore. Next are two shorter electronic pieces from 1989 and 1995 – "Conversations With The Three Of Me" and "Think All Focus One". The set finishes with the title track of Abrams' great album "Spihumonesty" – with Muhal on piano and electronics, Amina Claudine Myers on electric piano and organ, Roscoe Mitchell on alto and flute, Yousef Yancey on theremin, and George Lewis on trombone and electronics. Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmed (Pat Thomas/Antonin Gerbal/Joel Grip/Seymour Wright)Super Majnoon – East Meets West ... LP
OTOroku (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $31.99
A fantastic group dedicated to one of our favorite jazz musicians of all time – legendary bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, the musician who worked famously with Thelonious Monk, but also recorded some amazing experiments that mixed together jazz rhythms and elements of music from the Mid East! For this quartet performance, bassist Joel Grip assumes a role that's probably closest to Abdul-Malik – but it's also clear that all four performers are very much in the spirit of their muse – and spin out these beautiful long tracks with an almost other-worldly vibe – a mix of jazz and exoticism that also evokes some of the smaller combo Sun Ra material of the early years of Saturn Records. Other players include Pat Thomas on piano, Seymour Wright on alto, and Antonin Gerbal on drums – and titles include "E-Lail West", "Farah Alaiyna", and "E-Lail East". LP, Vinyl record album

A Chahine & Fils/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 28.99
A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! The set is upbeat and funky, but not entirely disco – more this very groovy blend of Mid-East elements and more familiar keyboards – all moving and grooving in ways that are a lot hipper than any other belly dance music we've heard! Music features piano and organ, plus a very cool "string synthesizer" by played by the leader – and there's also plenty of percussion at the core of the set, making for a nice juxtaposition with the electric elements. Titles include "Night Entertainer", "Dance Of Tenderness", "Joy Of Lina", "A Flower Of My Imagination", "Love Of Laura", "Girls Of Iskandariah", and "Once A Year". LP, Vinyl record album

Anderson PaakOxnard (with bonus tracks) ... LP
12T/Aftermath, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $31.99
Cinematic hip hop soul from Anderson.Paak named after a seaside city west of Los Angeles, CA – but it's not Malibu, it's the stunning follow up Oxnard – a little looser, more diverse, and ultimately just as impressive set from this still rising talent! The uber-impressive guest list including Kadhja Bonet, Norelle, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop, Dre, Pusha T, J Cole, Q-Tip and more but this is the sprawling Anderson.Paak show all the way, his distinctive blend of Cali sunshine and nighttime music and mood, his gritty-smooth voice so masterfully going back & forth from singing to rhyming, the production breathtaking from the stripped down beats, bass and vocals focused tracks to grander and more densely layered material. Includes "The Chase" with Kadja Bonet, "Headlow" feat Lowrell, "Tints" feat Kendrick Lamar, "Who R U", "6 Summers", "Saviers Road", "Smile/Petty", "Mansa Musa", "Brothers Keeper" feat Pusha T, "Anywhere" feat Snoop Dogg & Last Artful Dodgr, "Trippy" feat J Cole and "Cheers" feat Q-Tip – plus the bonus tracks "Sweet Chick" feat BJ The Chicago Kid and "Left To Right". AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

Arat Kilo with Mamani Keita & Mike LaddVisions Of Selam (with bonus download) ... LP
Accords Croises (France), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
Arat Kilo blend together sounds of West Africa, currents of hip hop, and older Mid East modes – all filtered through their unique Parisian perspective, and topped here with help from Mike Ladd and Mamani Keita on vocals! The record's a great evolution of older world music blends that never seemed to gel this well – but which maybe took the efforts of a younger multicultural outfit like this to really hold together! Rhythms are heavy on real percussion, and titles include "Seeds", "Toulo", "Dou Coula", "American Juju", "Soul Flood", "Chaos Embedded", "Yala", "Cilaos", and "Angafile". 2LP set seems to have bonus material from the CD – titles that include "Seeds (inst)", "Dia Barani Tropikal (Kamo rmx)", and "Eshi Swost". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album

Okyerema AsanteSabi ... LP
Atumpan/Kalita (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A lost set from percussionist Okyerema Asante – an African percussionist, but one who made some great music as part of the Black Fire/Oneness Of Juju collective on the DC scene in the 70s! This album follows with a spirit that's a bit like the later work of Oneness – and in fact, the group also features its leader, the excellent Plunky Nakabinde on a variety of saxes and flute. There's a strong dancefloor current at times – mixing funk and soul with deeper roots – similar to Oneness on their Make A Change album, inflected with lots of clubby rhythms and a bit of electronics. The best cut is "That's My Girl" – a 15 minute number that grooves on with some good sax bits from Plunky, and a catchy hook that comes off quite soulfully – but the other long track, "Sabi (Get Down)", is pretty great too. Pascal AtanganaYe Mot Ai Kare Mot – Cameroun Partout Vol 10 (with bonus download) ... LP
Nanga Boko (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Pascal Atangana is a hell of a singer – one who can move quickly, but with lots of deft changes – over the very dynamic rhythms provided by his excellent backing group! The set was originally issued as a part of a series to showcase the music of Cameroon in the 70s – but it's got a unique quality that's very much its own – often delivered with a very propulsive blend of percussion and fast-moving guitars – rhythms that cascade forward without ever missing a beat, while Pascal does an amazing job of keeping up the pace, and bringing lots of personal inflections to the sound as well. Titles include "Ye Mot Ai Kare Mot", "Amayang Wom", "Aluk Adang Ayia", "Za Ayana Ma", "Oyene Nyolo Ane Nyobok", and "Komedeng". LP, Vinyl record album

Alhaji Kollington Ayinla & His Fuji 78 OrganizationBlessing ... LP
Kollington/Soul Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
An album of heavy righteous power from Alhaji Kollington Ayinla and his Fuji 78 ensemble – a group who bring a very different sound to this record than some of the more mainstream Afro Funk work of the Nigerian scene at the time! The group are heavily percussive, and also use their drums in these inflected ways that open up next to the vocals – yet they're also not afraid to throw in a bit of synth and keyboards, but with modes that are never trying to overwhelm the core fuji energy of the music – which really comes from the hard-driving percussion, and the rising of group vocals next to the lead of Ayinla – all in ways that almost have the righteous energy of prayer, but tuned here towards much more secular politics in the end. The whole record has a timeless power that's undeniable – and titles include "Pataki L'Omo", "To Ba Jisoro Mi", "Won Ti Gbe Oye Fun Mi", "Adio Shile", "E Ye Ika Se", and "Odu Titun De".
