A really compelling set from trombonist Roswell Rudd – one of our favorite players of the 60s avant garde, and an artist who's started to grow tremendously since coming out of his recent retirement! The set is a brilliant criss-crossing of styles – as Rudd's working here with Mali-based musicians led by kora player Toumani Diabate, in a set of post-colonial world jazz that recalls some of the best Paris-based experiments in the genre during the 70s. Rudd's tone is darkly evocative – juxtaposed nicely against the percussion and stringed instruments of the ensemble – and the album makes for a really striking new chapter in his long career! Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! A wild little record – one that was issued under the name of Flying Dutchman label headman Bob Thiele – but which actually features work from some of the grooviest artists on the label at the time – including Tom Scott, Ornette Coleman, Jon Appleton, John Carter, Horace Tapscott, and Bobby Bradford! The package has a very different feel on each of the album's four sides – and side one is a tremendous showcase for the young reedman Tom Scott – working here in a cool mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation that's similar to his other records of the time – including organ, vibes, and some nice funky touches as well. Side two features an exploration of the history of jazz – but one that progresses quickly from early modes to hipper ones – showcasing the talents of John Carter on tenor, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, and Horace Tapscott on piano! Side three is a mighty dedication to the late John Coltrane – played at first by a trio with Joe Farrell on flute, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – then moving into a mix of Farrell's flute and narration by Rosko – then a performance by the Ornette Coleman quartet. And side four is especially mindblowing, as it's comprised of lone long piece by Jon Appleton's Syntonic Menagerie – a mix of sound samples, tape tricks, and jazz – as a commentary on The American Indian, JFK, and Martin Luther King. The whole thing's a great illustration of the Flying Dutchman label at its most revolutionary – and titles include "Head Start", "Freaky Zeke", "Lanoola Goes Limp", "Swing Era", "In The Vineyard/Avant Garde", "Love Supreme", "Lament For John Coltrane", and "A Few Thoughts For The Day". CD also features a rare bonus track – "The Flying Dutchman". CD

One of Anthony Braxton's great records for BYG, and like the other one, a very cool session that has Braxton playing in a vibe that shows his AACM roots much more clearly than a lot of other sessions! He's playing here with a number of other Chicago expatriates – including Leo Smith on trumpet, Steve McCall on percussion, and Leroy Jenkins on violin – and between them, the four players handle a huge amount of string, reed, percussion, and keyboard instruments, switching off and on in a warmly experimental sound that characterizes the best work of the Chicago avant garde from the time. Tracks include "The Light On the Dalta", "Simple Like", and one of Braxton's weird symbol compositions. Ironically, this French session from the late 60s still stands as one of the best ways to witness the budding Chicago genius of the AACM! CD

Modern art, but of the sonic variety – served up here by composer Daniela Casa on a rare sound library album, but with a free-thinking quality that rivals the best of the avant garde at the time! Unlike some more staid, academic record, there's no overarching concept here – no detailed notes that you need to read to "get" the music. Instead, Casa creates these short, dark little passages of sound – sometimes very abstract, occasionally tuneful – with elements that move between free jazz, atonal piano and woodwinds, offbeat strings, and even a bit of Fender Rhodes! The whole thing's a great reminder of just how much genius was bubbling up in Italy during the 70s – so much so that a record like this, which would have been worthy of release by Columbia or Deutsche Grammophon in bigger scenes, was only pressed up in small quantities by the Flipper music label. A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

One of the hippest albums that Rahsaan Roland Kirk ever recorded – a perfect realization of his "black classical music" ethos, and a pan-generational jazz album that's all held together by one unique musical vision! Side one features the extended suite "The Seeker", which mixes together bop, avant garde, and New Orleans styles – and side two features more of the same in an extended medley of tracks, plus the titles "Baby Let Me Shake Your Tree" and "Sweet Fire". The album's got a few cool passages that feature recitations by Rahsaan – stating his musical philosophy, and tracing the development of the styles of work – and other players include Leroy Jenkins on violin, Dick Griffin on trombone, Ron Burton on piano, and Sonelius Smith on celeste! A wonderful, wonderful, wonderful "new thing" jazz session from Blue Note – and proof that the avant garde in the 60s didn't necessarily have to resort to blowing their heads off to make fantastic music! Trombonist Grachan Moncur III organized the session – but like other key Blue Note dates of this type, including work from Tony Williams and Jackie McLean, the album's a very evenly-weighted date that features equal contributions from all members involved! The lineup's a dream – and features Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – and the set's very much in the vein of Williams' Life Time album for Blue Note – with lots of dark, moody, and extremely complex compositions – and beautifully restrained modern solos. Moncur wrote all the tracks, and titles include "The Twins", "Nomadic", "Gnostic", and "Thandiwa". CD

A landmark album in the British avant garde – the first set ever issued on Incus Records, and a monumental set of improvisations between Evan Parker on saxes, Hank Bennink on percussion, and Derek Bailey on guitar! The album followed from some great energy on the British scene of the previous few years – but went onto set the tone for countless other improvisations in years to come – especially in the way that Bailey's guitar is integrated into the sharper sounds of the saxes and drums. That blend may well be the record's strongest contribution to improvisation – but even without that historic status, it's still a hell of a set from some genius players at their height. Titles include "Dogmeat", "For Peter B & Peter K", "Fixed Elsewhere", and "Titan Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice set for ECM for French avant garde jazz veteran Louis Sclavis – bit more linear in instrumentation than some of his more experimental work – but with a heavy mood and muscular angularity that hits the spot just right! Sclavis plays both soprano sax and clarinet on the set, with Matthieu Metzger on soprano and alto sax, electric guitarist Maxime Delpiere, Oliver Lete on bass and Francious Merville on drums. There's sinister, noirish edge to the composition that's working really well on this one, and the players are in fine form throughout. Titles include "De Charybde En Scylla", "La Premiere Ile", "Bain D'Aor", "Les Doutes Du Cyclope", "The Last Island", "L'Absence" and more. CD

The pinnacle of Blue Note's "new thing" era! This amazing album was led by drummer Tony Williams (then just a wee lad, playing with Miles Davis, in his legendary 60s quintet) – but it's more of a "roundtable" session that features equal contributions by some of Blue Note's best avant garde players from the time, all of them young fiery geniuses like Williams. The configurations of the players change drastically from track to track – and some feature Sam Rivers, Richard Davis, and Gary Peacock playing in a 2-bass and tenor lineup with Williams; others feature Bobby Hutcherson and Herbie Hancock playing heavily percussive vibes and piano solos next to Williams' assorted percussion playing; and one track doesn't even feature Williams at all, but has Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter in a beautifully moody bass and piano duet! The record is a treasure – and it's a landmark recording that's probably one of the greatest that Blue Note (or any other label) released during the 60s! One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. The most truly jazz-based group on Norway's hip Jazzland label – a quintet of players that know how to push an avant garde solo into a groove, and vice versa! The album's free-thinking and quite striking – as some tracks crackle with the energy of an early Mingus record, filtered through the colder cooler approaches of the recent Norwegian scene. Very cool work from the Irish avant garde of the early 70s – served up here by a key member of what must have been a pretty small scene! Roger Doyle is a drummer, with experience in jazz – but here, he's working in this huge variety of experimental sounds – leading a Moondog-like combo on one track, directing a trio of ancient instruments on another, playing solo piano with effects, and even creating some tape experiments too! There's a very freewheeling sound to the whole album – stepping between instrumental modes and styles in this way that we might dub as playful, but which has such a compelling quality, it's way deeper than you might expect. True genius from an overlooked talent – with titles that include "Why Is Kilkenny So Good", "Oizzo No", "Theme From Emptigon", "Extra Bit", "Obstinato", and "Bitter Sweet Suite". Kind of a strange mix – half dramatic tracks with a very spare, and almost avant garde approach, by Benjamin Frankel; and half Mexican trio tracks, recorded by Los Tres Guaramex in earlier years, included here on the soundtrack. The result is a bizarre shifting between moody quiet tracks, and others with a more lively Latin-themed feel. Titles include "Maxine & Shannon Theme", "Hannah & Shannon Theme", "The Night Of The Iguana Theme", "Shannon's Long Swim", "La Llegada", "Mexicanerias", and "The Washer Women Of Mexico". A pair of legendary albums from the mighty Joe Harriott – a player who emigrated to England in the 50s, then set the scene on fire in the following decade! First up is Free Form – the landmark album that forever put saxophonist Joe Harriott on the map, and it's a brilliant batch of tracks that prove that Harriott was advancing the jazz avant garde in England as much as players like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor were advancing it in America. Despite the "free form" of the title, the tracks are more "new thing" – somewhat structured, with a rhythmic approach that's still a little straight, but solos that go nice and outside. Joe's overall conception is a beautiful mix of angular thinking with freely expressed soulful emotion – and the record's one that ranks up there with the 10 most groundbreaking of the 60s! The group's about as fantastic as you could ever expect from England at the time – with Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seamen on drums – and titles include "Formation", "Coda", "Abstract", "Straight Lines", and "Impression". Next is Abstract – one of the legendary sets of avant garde jazz by the British alto genius Joe Harriott – an artist who was sometimes billed as the British Ornette Coleman – a reputation he definitely earns with the groundbreaking quality of this album! The conception is bold right from the start – strongly rhythmic, but at a level that's different from Coleman's music – with some deeply emotional undertones to the solos (which also include work from Shake Keane on trumpet!) – and occasional modal elements that also bring in some spiritual elements to work perfect with the breakout solos. The group also features crack rhythm work from Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seaman on drums – and the track list includes "Subject", "Shadows", "Tonal", "Oleo", "Pictures", "Idiom", "Compound" and "Modal". CD

The 4th collaboration between electronics maestro Kieran Hebden & free jazz drum titan Steve Reid – a duo that might have seemed an odd fit at first, but actually makes a lot of sense given their adventurous sensibilities – and their joint body of work keeps growing in surprising ways! NYC is, you guessed it, and ode to the great city – with a pretty diverse approach that builds throughout the six longish tracks. Some find Reid hitting pretty hard and heavy while others are more dexterous and complicated in the rhythms, while Hebden works in both a groove based mode and in artier, Eno-esque experimentation. Truly inspired work from a duo we hope work together for years to come. Titles include "Lyman Place", "1st & 1st" & "25th Street" (both of which work in some avant garde funk), "Arrival", "Between B & C" and "Departure". CD

One of the avant garde classics in the early catalog of ECM Records – a set that has bassist Dave Holland working with two key bandmates from the Circle group – Anthony Braxton on saxes and flute, and Barry Altschul on percussion – as well as the great Sam Rivers on flute and sax, who was really taking off at the time! All tracks are originals by Holland – and Rivers' emotive, flowing approach proves the perfect balance for Braxton's intellectual approach – in a setting that really brings the most out of both players, thanks in part to elastic rhythms from Holland and Altschul. The overall approach leaves a great deal of space on this atmospheric set – but not in the usual mellower ECM way. Titles include "Four Winds", "Q & A", "Conference Of The Birds", "Interception", "Now Here (Nowhere)", and "See Saw". CD

A late 70s issue of material that was originally recorded by Shaw and the group in their hometown of St Louis – where they held center stage in the city's small but committed avant garde scene, working as St Louis' answer to Chicago's AACM. Players include JD Paran on reeds, Joseph Bowie on trombone and percussion, Oliver Lake on saxes, James Marshall on alto and flute, and Baikida Carroll on gong and percussion – and tracks include "Whisper Of Dharma" and "A World New". LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the coolest sounds we've ever heard from the Three Blind Mice label in the 70s – a trio outing, but one that has the players really changing up their instruments a lot over the course of the album's long tracks – never in a way that's too avant garde or improvisational, but which always has the group really reaching for new sounds! Yoko Sumiya plays Yamaha electric keys, mini moog, and a Steinway – and really comes up with this incredible blend of acoustic and electric elements – one that's sometimes offset by these moody vocalizations that are hardly song, but almost another instrument in the mix. Jimmy Shironga plays acoustic guitar and electric bass – and again also vocalizes a bit, but in this strangely offbeat way that's often far from lyrical – more personally expressive overall. All group members seem to shout with enthusiasm at points – especially when Shin Okabe urges them on with drums – as well as a host of other percussion instruments too. There's never any moments that get too out, and overall there's almost a performative feel to the whole thing – with the band changing moods and rhythms a number of times during a single song. Tracks include "Soul Soran", "Gion Shoja", and "Sei Shonagon". CD

One of the best Rolf Kuhn sessions we can think of – and a classic MPS album that mixes spiritual avant garde jazz with unusual rhythmic progressions and world percussion. Rolf's group here features Phil Woods guesting on alto, a great companion for Rolf's fluid clarinet lines, which sound here more like soprano sax, blown in a spiritual post-Dolphy kind of way. Nana Vasconcelos is on percussion and berimbau, and Joachim Kuhn plays piano. Tracks include "The Day After", "Turning Out", "Everything In the Garden", and "CA 1-9-5-2". LP, Vinyl record album

A dark and extremely avant garde soundtrack from the great Ennio Morricone – one that's done in collaboration with his own Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – an ensemble with roots in film scoring, but expressions that are more in the mode of 20th century avant! The music is a blend of free improvisation and more straight ahead jazz – with electric guitar, trumpet, violin, and percussion mixed with lots of weird effects and electronics – much more experimental than some of Morricone's more famous soundtracks of the time, and given a nice sense of direction from conductor Bruno Nicolai. The whole thing's incredibly spooky – one of the most turgid scores we've ever heard from the pen of Morricone – and the titles include "Sequita", "Evaporazione", "Dal Sogno E Ritorno", "Folle Folle", and "Notte E Misteri". Killer piano jazz, and some of the greatest modernist work ever recorded by Blue Note! Herbie Nichols deserves every bit of the rare fame he ever got – and it's only the paucity of his recordings that has kept him from achieving the status of Thelonious Monk or Cecil Taylor as an avant garde forefather – which makes this album a really key piece of a too-small jazz puzzle! Nichols is amazing throughout – bristling with new ideas, and a fresh approach to modern jazz that also transforms the presence of the other two members of the trio – Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass, both of whom are clearly following Herbie's lead here. All titles are original – Nichols was a hell of a writer – and titles include "Third World", "Step Tempest", "Dance Line", "Blue Chopsticks", "Shuffle Montgomery", "Brass Rings", "Crisp Day", and "Amoeba's Dance". One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "Gods Of A Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite". A wonderful step forward for drummer Max Roach – working here in very creative company with saxophonist Anthony Braxton! Although Roach could have easily rested on his laurels as a famous bop drummer – and have spent endless years touring on highly-paid revival/reunion tours – he was a true creative giant who never stopped expanding his talents, especially during the late 70s, when he was matching up with some of the greats of the avant garde. This album is a perfect example of that commitment to modernism, as Roach duets with Anthony Braxton on a set of 7 fantastic tracks that stand apart from individual work by either artist – more loose and open than earlier Roach work, but a bit more inside than some of Braxton's – with fresh results from both players that never fail to delight! Titles include "Dance Griot", "Birth", "Tropical Forest", and "Spirit Possession". CD

A late 80s effort from Pharoah Sanders – recorded in partnership with William Henderson, who plays piano and Kurzweil synthesizer on the session. The work flows nicely from Sanders' earlier work on the Theresa label – warm, spiritual, still with the majestic searching quality of his best Impulse recordings, but with none of the forced attempt to be too avant garde to be enjoyable. Overall, the album's quite mellow – and although the synth work by Henderson might get in the way a bit, it's more than made up for by some solidly soulful blowing by Pharoah, always a treat! Titles include "Living Space", "After The Rain", "The Light At The Edge Of The World", "Softly For Shyla", and "The Greatest Love Of All". CD

The birth of a key moment in avant garde music – served up here in a series of recordings that are nicely different than some of the other musique concrete material on the market! The package brings together some early "panorama" presentations of the work – two from the Club D'Essai program on French TV, with crucial work from Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer, working in that blend of acoustic instruments with electronic results that seemed to grace so much of these early experiments! There's also contributions from Philippe Arthuys on one of the programs – and the set then moves onto CD2, which has even more variety in the music. The first section of CD2 features selections from a 1959 showcase of musique concrete by the Groupe De Recherces Musicales – with work by Iannis Xenakis, Henri Sauget, Luc Ferrari, Michel Philippot, and Schaeffer. The second part of that CD features the soundtrack to the film Malefices D'Henri Decoin by Pierre Henry – a selection of very cool songs! CD

A wild little record – one that was issued under the name of Flying Dutchman label headman Bob Thiele – but which actually features work from some of the grooviest artists on the label at the time – including Tom Scott, Ornette Coleman, Jon Appleton, John Carter, Horace Tapscott, and Bobby Bradford! The package has a very different feel on each of the album's four sides – and side one is a tremendous showcase for the young reedman Tom Scott – working here in a cool mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation that's similar to his other records of the time – including organ, vibes, and some nice funky touches as well. Side two features an exploration of the history of jazz – but one that progresses quickly from early modes to hipper ones – showcasing the talents of John Carter on tenor, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, and Horace Tapscott on piano! Side three is a mighty dedication to the late John Coltrane – played at first by a trio with Joe Farrell on flute, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – then moving into a mix of Farrell's flute and narration by Rosko – then a performance by the Ornette Coleman quartet. And side four is especially mindblowing, as it's comprised of lone long piece by Jon Appleton's Syntonic Menagerie – a mix of sound samples, tape tricks, and jazz – as a commentary on The American Indian, JFK, and Martin Luther King. The whole thing's a great illustration of the Flying Dutchman label at its most revolutionary – and titles include "Head Start", "Freaky Zeke", "Lanoola Goes Limp", "Swing Era", "In The Vineyard/Avant Garde", "Love Supreme", "Lament For John Coltrane", and "A Few Thoughts For The Day". One of the weirdest, wildest albums Caetano Veloso ever recorded – a highly experimental session that shows that his ties with the avant art world were still plenty strong on his return to Brazil! Despite a goofy cheeseball photo of Veloso on the cover in a bikini, the sound on this one is waaaaay out – with weird avant garde vocal bits, choppy instrumentation, and wild shifts in style that make his Tropicalia albums almost seem like pop hits! As usual, Caetano's vocals are superb, especially as he slides from experimental tunes into straighter songs – like the title cut "Araca Azul", and Milton Nascimento's "Cravo E Canela". Proof that the Brazilian intelligentsia was still alive and well in the post-Tropicalia years – with other titles that include "De Palavar Em Palavra", "Julia/Moreno", "Epico", "Viola Meu Bem", "De Conversa", and "Sugarcane Fields Forever". The pinnacle of Blue Note's "new thing" era! This amazing album was led by drummer Tony Williams (then just a wee lad, playing with Miles Davis, in his legendary 60s quintet) – but it's more of a "roundtable" session that features equal contributions by some of Blue Note's best avant garde players from the time, all of them young firey geniuses like Williams. The configurations of the players change drastically from track to track – and some feature Sam Rivers, Richard Davis, and Gary Peacock playing in a 2-bass and tenor lineup with Williams; others feature Bobby Hutcherson and Herbie Hancock playing heavily percussive vibes and piano solos next to Williams' assorted percussion playing; and one track doesn't even feature Williams at all, but has Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter in a beautifully moody bass and piano duet! The record is a treasure – and it's a landmark recording that's probably one of the greatest that Blue Note (or any other label) released during the 60s! Fantastic work by this obscure LA legend! Jimmy Woods was one of the unsung geniuses of the west coast scene at the start of the 60s – and the few recordings he ever made stand as some of the best examples of how the avant garde was feeding into the hard bop scene out there – and with fantastic results! Jimmy's alto is hard and biting throughout – and although it veers in the direction of Ornette Coleman at times, the overall conception is very much Woods' own – with a starkly clear voice that should have made him one of the key figures in 60s modern jazz. The rest of the group includes the great (and also underrecorded) Joe Gordon on trumpet, plus Amos Trice on piano, Milt Turner on drums, and either Gary Peacock or the highly rhythmic Jimmy Bond on bass. Titles include "Awakening", "Roma", "Not Yet", "New Twist", "Little Jim", and "Anticipation". CD

A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. A great set from AACM legend – tenorist Fred Anderson – cut in the very familiar home territory of his Velvet Lounge in Chicago! Anderson had been tending bar and leading jam sessions at the tavern since his return from Europe in the early 80s – but ended up purchasing the venue towards the end of the next decade – and quickly turned it into one of the real hotspots for the rising Chicago avant garde! This classic live set features Anderson caught in his home turf, in the company of bassist Peter Kowald and drummer Hamid Drake – prime example of the kind of local/international crossover sets that were really shaking the Chicago scene in the 90s. The set features 3 long tracks – "Straight, But Not Straight", "To Those Who Know", and "Multidimensional Reality". CD

One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. The studio work is as masterful as ever, always finding a killer groove and impeccable rhythmic dynamics – ratcheting up the intensity without the blunt force trauma that others in the free jazz underground bring on, balanced by spare moments and strains of the 60s heroes of avant garde jazz lurking in the shadows. Really wonderful stuff from players we love and respect more with each successive project! Wonderful early live work from Gato Barbieri – heard here both before his important American records on Impulse, and his earlier emergence in the global avant garde – already blowing with a really wonderful tone on tenor, in a hip quartet that features the great Ruben Baby Lopez Furst on piano! The set's a wonderful illustration of the way that modern modes showed up on the Argentine scene and very quickly made it one of the hippest in South America – a move that's signaled especially as Gato takes on two key Coltrane compositions amidst well-done versions of familiar numbers. Most tracks are nice and long, overflowing with strong tenor and piano solos – and the group features bass from Jorge Negro Gonzalez and drums from Antonio Tony Harris – on titles that include "Village Blues", "Impressions", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Round Midnight", and "You Say You Care". A very open, spacious sort of set from the German jazz scene of the 70s – one that's very different than both the hard-driving fusion of the time, and some of the more free jazz-styled work from the avant garde! There's a lean lineup here – a group that features a variety of flutes from leader Dieter Bihlmaier, mixed with the bass of Jan Jankeje and drums and percussion of Gerhard Ziegler – plus added vibes from Gerhard Dietz on the second half of the record, which really helps the sound take off. Overall, there's almost a style that's in the more experimental, spiritual side of the MPS/Saba world, with a similar care for the overall sound and conception of the set – on titles that include "Arco Oriental", "Roulette", "Ovation", "Maskerade", "Polyp's Lullaby", and "Echoes". A legendary session of avant garde jazz – recorded by MPS at the Baden Baden Free Jazz Meeting in 1969! The centerpiece of the record is the performance by the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Orchestra – which is led by Lester Bowie, and features Albert Mangelsdorff, Eje Thelin, Kenny Wheeler, Roscoe Mitchell, Alan Skidmore, Steve McCall, Tony Oxley, Willem Breuker, and other American and European avant players. The group performs a 2 part version of the title track – and their set is a beautiful mix of out styles, and a rare occasion to hear AACM players interacting with other European free jazz musicians. Incredible work from John Coltrane's Newport Jazz Festival sets from 1963 and 1965 – totally amazing work from Trane and his superior quartet of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – nearly 1 1/2 hours of essential avant garde! This CD features a trio of pieces from each year, "I Want To Talk About You", "My Favorite Things" and "Impressions" from '63 – plus One Done, One Up and "My Favorite Things" from '65 – with an endearing intro by Father Norman O'Connor for the '65 parts. Includes the extended version of "Impressions" from the '63 appearance – the full 23+ minute version that's never been released until now! CD

A fitting title for a great album – Eric Dolphy's last live recording, performed on June 2, 1964, with a trio of youngsters that included two of the greatest names in European avant garde jazz – Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink! The sound is jagged and a bit free – showing the way towards even greater innovations that might have marked Dolphy's 60s years, had he not been taken from us so quickly! A pretty hip album – despite a stupid title – and one that proves the Harris was always willing to keep on growing as an artist. The record does include a few blues numbers, and Eddie does sing a bit – but he does so through his electric saxophone, which creates this cool flanged-out sound that barely lets you hear the lyrics, and which feels a lot more like some snakey sax solo than it does singing. Muhal Richard Abrams is on piano for most of the record, and most of the arrangements were done by Richard Evans – bringing together the Chicago avant garde and studio scenes in a unique blend of far-reaching tracks that would have been perfect in the Cadet years of Charles Stepney. Includes a swinging version of "Giant Steps", plus "Please Let Me Go", "Walk With Me", "Ten Minutes To Four", and "A Child Is Born". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite albums of all times – and a legendary testament to the greatness of the Chicago music scene in the late 60s! Melvin Jackson was the bassist in Eddie Harris' very successful group of the time – and his playing on Eddie's trippy and funky records for Atlantic is one of the factors that made them so great. Here, he's working with an acoustic bass, amplified with electronics like a Varitone sax – and this strange-sounding instrument is set up in a hip group that mixes Cadet funky studio players (Phil Upchurch, Morris Jennings, Jody Christian) with some of the brighter young players of the AACM (Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, and Leo Smith.) Jackson's bass is looped through all sorts of crazy effects, and the result is this amazing blend of avant garde playing and groovy rhythms that is beyond compare! One of the best Rolf Kuhn sessions we can think of – and a classic MPS album that mixes spiritual avant garde jazz with unusual rhythmic progressions and world percussion. Rolf's group here features Phil Woods guesting on alto, a great companion for Rolf's fluid clarinet lines, which sound here more like soprano sax, blown in a spiritual post-Dolphy kind of way. Although the group here is piano-less – with Charles Davis on baritone sax, John Ore on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – there's a definite Monk-like edge to many of the numbers, carried off especially by the sharp turns in Lacy's horn! Reissue of a rare Teddy Charles album that also featured Booker Little and Booker Ervin. The album features the inventive vibist caught live in New York at a Metronome sponsored gig featuring Mingus alums Mal Waldron, Booker Ervin and Booker Little. The set includes one expansive Charles original, "Take Three Parts Jazz", a Little original "The Confined Few", Ervin's "Scoochie" and Waldron's "Cycles", along with a few standards. The music is fantastic, and is a mix of modernist modal themes with rich soul jazz playing. Ervin and Little are fantastic, and their sharp edgey sounds are a perfect contrast with Charles' moody vibes. Very little of Teddy Charles' work, which ranged from introspective avant garde pieces with Jimmy Giuffre to more swing based collaborations with Mingus, has been documented, this piece showcases his New Directions Quartet in a unique setting, with inspired guests. A fantastic bit of messed up avant garde jazz – and the first record ever from drummer Charles Moffett! The session was one of the rare few cut during Savoy's avant garde period – and it features Wilbur Ware on bass, Paul Jeffrey on tenor, and Dennis O'Toole on trumpet. The tracks have a very strange approach – with kind of a New York ESP sound, but also mixed with more of a soul jazz sensibility, and some slight bits of hippy dippy nuttiness. The record makes up for any weakness in the technical deparment with lots energy and a strong sense of effort – and it includes strange tracks like "Avant Garde Got Soul Too", "The Gift", and "Adnerb". A dark and extremely avant garde soundtrack from the great Ennio Morricone – one that's done in collaboration with his own Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – an ensemble with roots in film scoring, but expressions that are more in the mode of 20th century avant! The music is a blend of free improvisation and more straight ahead jazz – with electric guitar, trumpet, violin, and percussion mixed with lots of weird effects and electronics – much more experimental than some of Morricone's more famous soundtracks of the time, and given a nice sense of direction from conductor Bruno Nicolai. The whole thing's incredibly spooky – one of the most turgid scores we've ever heard from the pen of Morricone – and the titles include "Sequita", "Evaporazione", "Dal Sogno E Ritorno", "Folle Folle", and "Notte E Misteri". Expanded version – with 21 tracks in all! CD

A wonderful set from one of the most spiritual ladies of the avant garde! Amina Claudine Meyers is in very comfortable territory here – working on a set of original compositions, playing organ, piano, and singing a bit in a trio – with Thurman Barker on percussion and Don Pate on bass. While some might dismiss her vocalizations as a weak attempt at soul, we find them quite inspiring – and one of the few instances in which a 70s soul jazz approach bubbles up strongly in the 80s, proud and free, with the same sort of groove you might expect from a Strata East session – and very much at home on the Black Saint label! Titles include "The Clock", "Do You Wanna Be Saved?", "Louisville", and "The Circle Of Time". CD

Killer piano jazz, and some of the greatest modernist work ever recorded by Blue Note! Herbie Nichols deserves every bit of the rare fame he ever got – and it's only the paucity of his recordings that has kept him from achieving the status of Thelonious Monk or Cecil Taylor as an avant garde forefather – which makes this album a really key piece of a too-small jazz puzzle! A pretty wonderful set of tracks led by guitarist Jeff Parker, one of the most enormously talented, and one of the busiest guys in Chicago! Jeff spends time working with a number of avant garde jazz and rock combos like the Chicago Underground Quartet, Aesop Quartet, New Horizons Ensemble and Tortoise – but steps into a pretty straight up bop-learned jazz mode for his first full length as leader. He's leading a trio with Chad Taylor on drums and some light guitar, and Chris Lopes on bass and a little flute. Parker's sprays warm, fluid guitar lines throughout that really light the thing up. A wonderful step forward for drummer Max Roach – working here in very creative company with saxophonist Anthony Braxton! Although Roach could have easily rested on his laurels as a famous bop drummer – and have spent endless years touring on highly-paid revival/reunion tours – he was a true creative giant who never stopped expanding his talents, especially during the late 70s, when he was matching up with some of the greats of the avant garde. This album is a perfect example of that commitment to modernism, as Roach duets with Anthony Braxton on a set of 7 fantastic tracks that stand apart from individual work by either artist – more loose and open than earlier Roach work, but a bit more inside than some of Braxton's – with fresh results from both players that never fail to delight!
