William OnyeaborWho Is William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics 5 (3LP set) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 LPs Gatefold ... $31.99 34.99
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". 3LP set features four bonus tracks not on the CD! VariousMood Mosaic Vol 16 – Hipsoulover ... LP
Mood Mosaic (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... $28.99 42.99
One of the coolest entries we've ever seen in this excellent series – a package that's heavy on rare funk tracks from overseas, most of which we're never likely to find on vinyl in our neck of the woods! There's a slinky, sexy groove to most of these cuts – very 70s, with plenty of sweet electric elements, and lots of keyboards too – and although the vocals are part of the sound, the strength of the cuts really lies in the instrumentation – especially on the longer numbers that really take off strongly! Titles include "Puutharassa" by Pekka Streng, "Ombilic Contact" by Atomic Crocus, "Erotica" by Agua Turbia, "Primitivo" by Hareton Salvanini, "September 13" by Deodato, "Dingo" by Olivier Despax, "Animal" by Farm, and "Psychastenie" by Serge Gainsbourg. ✨✧ Blues CreationDemon & Eleven Children ... LP
Denon/Lawson (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing set from early 70s Japan – and a record that's every bit as sinister as you'd guess from its title! Blues Creation certainly started out with a blues influence in their music, but like some of the headier British groups of the moment, they've turned that love of guitar lines and heavy rhythms into some much more brooding territory – hard rock, but with a current of evil that was never in their inspirations – almost as if these guys have shaken off the blues, and are ready to show the world that they're a force to be reckoned with! The guitar work is superb – really top-shelf classic jamming level – and titles include "Atomic Bombs Away", "Demon & Eleven Children", "One Summer Day", "Brane Baster", and "Just I Was Born". ✨✧ Charles MingusOh Yeah (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Speakers Corner (Germany), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus – a record that fits nicely in his legacy of other recordings for Atlantic, but which has a very different approach! On this set, Mingus plays piano, and even sings a bit – using this messed-up take on blues roots, but filtered through a hipper modern jazz filter, and with a bit of a political bent too – almost as if he were trying to break out of the avant jazz ghetto, and reach a larger audience with his message and music! The group is an all-star lineup with Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and both Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on reeds – the latter of whom might be a good comparison in spirit, especially for some of the genre-crossing things he did on Atlantic during the late 60s. Titles include the classic "Oh Lord Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me" – plus "Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am", "Devil Woman", and "Passions Of A Man". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Comet Is ComingHyper Dimensional Expansion Beam ... LP
Impulse, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Comet Is Coming are one of those groups who are almost a genre unto themselves – certainly part of the rich criss-crossing of styles that has been taking place on the London scene of the past decade or so – but also a trio who've found a way to forge forward and hold the world at bay with a record like this! At the core, the approach is simple – tremendous tenor work from Shabaka Hutchings, drums from Betamax, and keyboards from Danalogue – the latter two of whom are equally important as producers, in the way they take the live performance at the core, and work it into so many other shifting shapes and sounds! Hutchings' solos are always kept mostly intact, which makes for a beating soul to the record, and a nice link to previous generations of jazz – on titles that include "Pyramids", "Tokyo Nights", "Technicolour", "Code", "Lucid Dreamer", "Atomic Wave Dance", "Mystik", and "The Hammer". ✨✧ Otakar Olsanik/Jan MartisAdvanced Process ... LP
Coloursound Library/Be With (UK), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A synth-heavy sound library set, and one that really lives up to the cover image of a spaceman on the front – a record that soars through the skies on waves of pulsating sonic energy – lean enough to achieve liftoff, but with enough force to keep on soaring through the cosmos! The keyboards used aren't listed in the notes, but there's definitely an 80s vibe throughout – plenty of elements from those early days of digital keys – when things were very sharp around the edges, yet still had some of the warmth of hand-programmed keyboards too! Titles include "Regulators 2", "Data Load", "Modem", "Digiheart 1", "Fusion Point 3", "Nuclear Radiation 2", and "Atomic Plant 1". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chico Science & Nacao ZumbiAfrociberdelia (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Chaos/Polysom (Brazil), 1996. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Believe it or not, the title's a pretty good way to describe this modern Brazilian rock release – as the music's a mish mash of newer beats and grooves, grounded in a hip hop/dance tradition, mixed with samples of older Brazilian rock influences – including stuff by Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso. We like this one a lot better than we expected, and we hardly mind the modern elements, when we can get an occasional treat like a sample of "Bat Macumba", or a remake of "Maracatu Atomico". The latter track is included here in 4 different mixes, and other tracks include "Sangue De Bairro", "Mateus Enter", "O Cidado Do Mundo", "Maco", "Um Passeio No Mundo Livre", and "Baiao Ambiental". ✨✧ Piero UmilianiL'Uomo Elettronico – Cosmic Electronic Environments From An Italian Synth Music Maestro 1972 to 1983 ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Weird and wonderful sounds from a very electric man – the mighty Piero Umiliani, an Italian composer who first rose to fame for a set of groundbreaking film scores in the 60s – then moved into even more experimental sound library work in the following decade! This set has Piero working in all sorts of cool electronic styles – never too outside or avant, but definitely in the darker side of his spectrum – although almost always with that playful sense of a tune that made his 60s music such a delight! The range of instruments varies – Umiliani clearly had a studio that was full of brand-new, top-shelf technologies – and titles are mostly from the mid 70s, with a few later cuts from 1983. Tunes include "Danza Magica", "Soundmaker Blues", "Fruitori", "Batticuore", "Sinistro Carillon", "Dolomiti", "Apocolaisse Atomica", "Description", "Lavorazione A Mare", and "Elettrone".
