✨✧ Solomon BurkeKing Of Rock N Soul – The Atlantic Recordings 1962 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/ (UK), Mid 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Essential work from the legendary Solomon Burke – one of the greatest singers to record for Atlantic Records during the 60s – and an artist we'd put right up there next to Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding! Like both of those giants, Solomon has a style that's completely his own – almost a blueprint for deep soul, southern soul, and 60s soul all together at once – never captured as well or as perfectly as during the mid 60s years he recorded for Atlantic! There's nobody like Solomon Burke during these Atlantic years – a hard-edged singer who was virtually inventing deep soul at the time – taking currents from earlier R&B years, and folding them with a brash, bold energy that was completely heartfelt – and which drew on the same sort of styles that southern soul singers would make their own a few years later – as you'll see by the dates here, Burke predates work by Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Wilson Pickett. The package features 3CDS, and a massive 79 tracks in all – the biggest collection of Burke's work for Atlantic that we've ever seen – with tracks that include "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Baby", "Gotta Travel On", "Peepin", "Yes I Do", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Beautiful Brown Eyes", "When She Touches Me", "Keep Lookin", "Woman How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do", "Presents For Christmas", "What'd I Say", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "This Little Ring", "It's All Right", "How Many Times", "Cry To Me", "Hard Ain't It Hard", "Mountain Of Pride", "I Feel A Sin Coming On", and lots lots more! A fantastic set – all 6 of Solomon's albums for Atlantic, plus non-LP cuts recorded for the label. CD

✨✧ Billy CobhamAtlantic Box Set 1973 to 1978 (Spectrum/Crosswinds/Total Eclipse/Shabazz/Funky Thide/Life & Times/Live On Tour/Inner Conflicts) (8CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Mid 70s. Used 8 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a run of music from legendary drummer Billy Cobham – records so strong, they're maybe almost a genre unto themselves! Billy had already made something of a mark as a sideman before these albums, but right from the start, he brought something completely different to the table – a genre-stepping mix of jazz, funk, and soul influences that are as forward-moving for Cobham's instrument as Stanley Clarke's similar span of records in the 70s were for the bass – and, like Clarke's, these records have appeal that stretches way past conventional jazz, or even conventional funky jazz too. Yet there's also none of Cobham's more rockish-fusion on these records either – which makes for a wonderfully soulful span of records throughout – as Billy tries on so many different modes, and gets all of them pretty darn right! Some records have bonus tracks, too – and the set features the complete albums Spectrum, Crosswinds, Total Eclipse, Shabazz, Funky Thide Of Sings, Life & Times, Live On Tour In Europe, and Inner Conflicts – plus bonus tracks "Natural Essence", "Neu Rock & Roll (outtake)", "Stratus (single mix parts 1 & 2)", "All 4 One (outtake)", "Le Lis", "Crosswind (single mix)", "Moon Germs", "Hip Pockets (single mix)", and "Do What Cha Wanna (single mix)". Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 6 CD + Book ... Out Of Stock
We'll be honest with you – we love this stuff! Sure, Ornette made some great recordings for a number of other labels – but as a whole, his Atlantic stuff is some of the greatest modern jazz ever recorded, and no other period of an artist is more worth collecting and having in a complete format than this one! The package is unbelievably thorough – and includes not only all the tracks from classic albums like Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz, Shape Of Jazz To Come, Ornette!, Ornette On Tenor, The Art Of The Improvisors and Twins – but also 6 previously unreleased tracks, and rare material like Ornette's Japanese-only LP To Whom Who Keeps A Record plus 2 selections from Gunther Schuller's Jazz Abstractions featuring Ornette! There's 6CDs in all – packaged in a great case with a well annotated booklet. John ColtraneHeavyweight Champion – Complete Atlantic Recordings (7CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 7 CDs & Book ... $44.99
An amazing set of work by John Coltrane – some of his best recordings ever, tracks that form a pivotal point between his later 50s work with Miles Davis and his mid 60s spiritual searching years. The set's unbelievably exhaustive – and includes every track that was ever issued by Coltrane on an Atlantic album, plus some great alternate takes, plus a 72 page hardbound book of photos and writings, plus a whole CD of rare material that was never issued before! (The folks at Atlantic say that they would have loved to make an even bigger set – but after a fire in their warehouse in the 70s, this one CD of tapes is all that ever remained!) The whole package is incredibly well put together – in a small discrete box with some great fold-out CD cases, and a wonderful mechanism for storage that's as great as the music in the set. Titles include "Syeeda's Song Flute", "Ole", "My Favorite Things", "Cousin Mary", "Giant Steps", "Mr Day", "Blues To Elvin", "Satellite", "Liberia", "Dahomey Dance", and sooooo much more! CD

Rufus HarleyCourage – The Complete Atlantic Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino Handmade, Late 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $28.99
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". One of Mose Allison's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set follows nicely from Mose's earlier work for Prestige and Columbia – with Mose on piano, plus Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. The set features 10 tracks in all – including "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended". ✨✧ Dorothy Ashby/Junior ManceFantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby/Live At The Top ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1965/1969. Used ... $14.99
Two obscure Atlantic jazz albums on one CD! The real winner here is The Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby – as Dorothy gets a cool breezy sound out of the harp that's unlike any other player we've ever heard on the instrument. This session doesn't have the funky soul sound of her later Cadet albums, but all of her work is great, and the record shines with a tight approach to rhythm – thanks to excellent backing from Richard Davis, Willie Bobo, and Grady Tate. Tracks include "Flighty", "Nabu Corfa", "Dodi Li", and "Essence of Sapphire". The Junior Mance album's a live one, recorded at The Top Of The Gate, with David Newman in the group playing flute and tenor on two tracks. All tunes are done in long versions, and titles include "I Wish I Knew", "Turning Point", and "Before This Time Another Year". CD

Atlantic/Rhino, 1974. Used ... $4.99
AWB's first for Atlantic – and a nice slice of funk that proves that they can mix it up with the best groups of the 70s! The record's got plenty of sweet electric keyboards over smooth funky basslines – and as the years go by, the band's white boy vocals don't sound nearly as bad as we remember them. And besides, when they play their instruments so nicely – how can you hold the singing against them? Includes the killer classic "Pick Up The Pieces", sampled more times than we can remember – plus "You Got It", "Just Wanna Love You Tonight", "Person To Person", and a nice remake of the Isley Brothers' "Work To Do". The CD includes the bonus track "Pick Up The Pieces (the Atlantic Family Live At Montreux). CD

AWB's right up there with Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire for sheer pop 70s funkiness – and despite what you might think about a bunch of white guys noodling around like they're soul stars, you can't argue with classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", "Schoolboy Crush", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "A Love Of Your Own", and "Work To Do" – all of which are on this set! ✨✧ Andy BeyExperience & Judgment ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An incredibly righteous record from the legendary Andy Bey – an artist who's risen back to fame in recent years as a relatively straight jazz singer – but who was in some very heady territory here in the early 70s! Bey first rose to fame as part of the vocal trio, Andy & The Bey Sisters – and while that group's 60s recordings were already wonderful, Andy soon stepping out into tremendous territory of his own – working with Max Roach, Horace Silver, and Gary Bartz – and adding some unique spiritual and socially conscious vocals to some of their best jazz records at the end of the 60s! This set's one of Andy's few solo moments from the time – and really follows up the groove strongly – with lots of help from the mighty William Fischer, who wrote some of the tracks, and plays keyboards – although Bey is clearly the main compositional force here. The album includes a remake of "Celestial Blues", which Bey recorded famously with Gary Bartz – and which is in a leaner, even funkier take here – and other titles include "Being Uptight", "Tune Up", "Hibiscus", "Experience", and "The Power Of My Mind". Dave BrubeckTruth Is Fallen/Two Generations Of Brubeck ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1972/1974. Used ... $6.99
Truth Is Fallen is a complicated orchestral work – with Brubeck's piano, and backing from both the Cincinnati Symphony and the rock group New Heavenly Blue! Two generations, four Brubecks – an all family affair from the early 70s! Patriarch Dave Brubeck leads the sons through some of Dave's fine original numbers, sitting at his acoustic piano with Darius Brubeck on electric piano, organ and more, Chris Brubeck on trombone and bass, and Danny Brubeck on drums – along with David Mason on guitar and some utility players. The effort is way better than you may be expecting, as the brood shows some truly surprising range on tracks that veer from wildly energetic and muscular, to slender and brooding, to tightly moving! An under-appreciated gem! Tracks include "Circadian Dysrhythmia", "Three To Get Ready", "Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Unsquare Dance" (with some lightly funky bass), "The Holy One", "Call Of The Wild", "Knives" and "Tin Sink". CD

✨✧ Gary Burton & Keith JarrettGary Burton & Keith Jarrett/Throb ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1969/1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice 2-fer! Gary Burton & Keith Jarrett features hip work from both players – and Jarrett plays electric piano and soprano sax too – in a group that also features Sam Brown on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bill Goodwin on drums. Titles include "Como En Vietnam", "Fortune Smiles", "The Raven Speaks", and "Grown Your Own". Throb is a very groovy record from vibes legend Gary Burton – a set that was done for Atlantic Records right after Gary's big rise to genius on RCA – but with a feel that's even wilder than those wonderful records! There's a bit of the Vortex Records approach going on here – some slight psychedelic elements that come not just from Gary's vibes, but from the excellent guitar work from Jerry Hahn – who can play jazz, but with some of the trippiness of a rock musician – yet in a way that's still very laidback, and pre-fusion overall. The group also features Steve Swallow on bass, Bill Goodwin on drums, and a bit of violin from Richard Greene – and the blend of electric and acoustic strings with the vibes is mighty nice – with a sound that's sharper and more pointed than Burton's ECM music to come. Titles include "Turn Of The Century", "Chickens", "Some Echoes", "Throb", "Doin the Pig", and "Henniger Flats". CD

Atlantic/FTG, 1985. Used ... $6.99
A classic from Jenny Burton – only the singer's second album as a solo act, but already a set that has Jenny hitting on all burners! The mellow numbers are great – never sleepy or too commercial, but pushed into just the right blend of polish and soul – and the groovers have some electro touches that hint back and Burton's start working with John Robie – modes that are underdone here in ways that hold together a lot more strongly than the usual electro dancefloor cut. Some production is by Maurice Starr – and cuts include "Dancing For My Love", "Bad Habits", "Once In A Lifetime Love", "Load It Up", and "Love Runs Deeper Than Pride". The album that very firmly put Clarence Carter on the mainstream soul map – thanks to his brilliant version of the title tune! By the time of this set, Carter was already one hell of a soul singer – and really brought amazing sounds to play with classic production from Rick Hall and the Fame Studios gang. But when he pointed those talents towards the country soul story "Patches", he really found his groove – mixing southern roots from both sides of the fence into one really unique groove – and following it up with a host of other well-chosen tunes that really helped establish Carter's unique place in music. George Jackson co-wrote a number of the best tunes – a few with Clarence – and titles include "Patches", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Till I Can't Take It Anymore", "Changes", "Say Man", "Willie & Laura Mae Jones", "CC Blues", and "Getting the Bills (But No Merchandise)". ChangeTurn On Your Radio (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Big Break (UK), 1985. Used ... $11.99
A great later album from Change – not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Titles include "Turn On Your Radio", "Examination", "Let's Go Together", "Oh What A Feeling", "Mutual Attraction", "If You Want My Love", and "Love The Way You Love Me". CD features 7 bonus tracks too – including "Let's Go Together (12" Paul Hardcastle rmx)", "Mutual Attraction (12" Nick Martinelli rmx)", "Oh What A Feeling (12" Paul Hardcastle rmx)", "Let's Go Together (single)", "Mutual Attraction (single)", "Turn On Your Radio (single)", and "Mutual Attraction (inst)". Billy CobhamFunky Thide Of Sings ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, Mid 70s. Used ... $5.99
Billy Cobham's always got something funky going on in his music – and this 70s classic for Atlantic Records has the drummer at the height of his powers – really mixing together jazz, rock, and funk impulses – all without some of the overindulgence of his more jamming records of the time! There's still some great trippy sounds at times – some fierce future jazz passages that have Billy's drums really propelling keyboards and guitar – but overall the tracks are short and focused, with a nice nod back to the kind of energy that Cobham brought to his sessions with other artists. One exception is the great "Moody Modes" – a sweet long electric track that almost feels like George Duke on MPS – alongside other cuts that include "A Funky Kind Of Thing", "Some Skunk Funk", and "Light At The End Of The Tunnel". Ornette ColemanOrnette On Tenor ... CD
Atlantic, 1962. Used ... $6.99
An early standout set from Ornette Coleman – and a record that features him blowing on tenor, instead of his usual alto – as you might guess from the title! In a way, Ornette's playing on tenor is almost freer than his alto work – a bit more open-ended and exploratory, stretching out strongly – yet still also hitting that great rhythmic groove that made his Atlantic albums so great – thanks to rhythm from Jimmy Garrison on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. Don Cherry's in the group on pocket trumpet, and the tunes are as provocative as their titles – which include "Ecars", "Enfant", "Mapa", and "Cross Breeding". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneColtrane Plays The Blues (with bonus track) ... CD
Atlantic, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of simple vamp that might characterize a blowing session for other labels, but which still has a strong degree of focus for this date. Rhythm is from McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and there's some great sharp edges from Coltrane here, especially on the numbers that feature tenor sax in the lead. Side one of the album features more standard bluesy vamps, but side two really opens up into some tremendous numbers that show the first great hint of modal energy – rollingly enchanting titles that still leave us breathless after all these years! Tracks include "Blues To Elvin", "Blues To Bechet", "Mr Syms", "Mr Day", and "Mr Knight". Also features the bonus track "Untitled Original". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneColtrane's Sound (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic, 1960/1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure John Coltrane albums for Atlantic – but a beautiful batch of spiritual numbers that really show him pushing towards the sound of A Love Supreme! The date on the album's 1966, but the material was recorded earlier – in that key turning point year of 1960, when Coltrane really started to let loose with his new ideas – ideas so fresh, in fact, that they might have kept this record from getting released at the time! The group here features piano from McCoy Tyner, drums from Elvin Jones, and bass from Steve Davis – an oft-overlooked talent who did some amazing work with Coltrane during this brief time. The tracks are open, flowing, and filled with imagination – and Coltrane works both on tenor and soprano sax, on titles that include "Liberia", "Equinox", "Satellite", "Central Park West", and a classic reading of "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". CD features an alternate take of "Body & Soul", plus the track "26-2". CD

2 lost soul jazz classic from the Atlantic catalog! Hank Crawford's Soul Clinic is one of the few albums we really like by him, and it features the soulful altoist playing in a group with David Fathead Newman and some other lesser-known players who are nice and soulful. The set's got some warm mellow instrumental versions of blues classics, plus a few originals like "Lorelei's Lament", "Blue Stone", and "Playmates". Even better is Blues Shout, one of the rare few albums cut by the amazing alto and flute player Leo Wright. The record's got a beautiful mix of soul jazz and slightly modern lyricism, and Wright's tone and projection are impeccable throughout. Titles on the record include "Sigi", "Blues Shout", "Indian Summer", "The Wind", and "Two Moods" – and players include Junior Mance, Richard Williams, and Charlie Persip. CD

A great document of all this famous harmony trio/quartet were able to achieve during their first few years – a masterful reworking of vocal group modes from earlier rock and soul styles, taken forward towards the 70s with a spirit that's still as powerful today as it was back at the time! These tracks saw so much circulation over the years, it's easy to forget how revolutionary they were – especially when coming from artists who had roots in more familiar rock modes, but who somehow really seemed to rise together in the company of each other. Quite an unusual date for vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon – one that has him singing with the group of Wilbur De Paris, in a mode that's a lot more trad than any of Jimmy's other records from the time! Turns out, that amazing voice is perfect for the setting – and Witherspoon really sounds wonderful here – ringing out with a full, rich style that most other trad male singers would never attempt – recorded beautifully for the session with top-shelf Atlantic fidelity, too – and more than a few echoes of their R&B approach in the studio! The group features Wilbur De Paris on trombone, Sidney De Paris on cornet, Omer Simeon on clarinet, and Sonny White on piano – and titles include "Careless Love", "Trouble In Mind", "Lotus Blossom", "Big Fine Girl", "Good Rollin Blues", and "When The Sun Goes Down". Atlantic/Collectables, 1960/1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early example of how Atlantic had already begun to exploit the international fascination with American R&B. The session was recorded in London, with Champion Jack on piano and vocals, and backing by a young Alexis Korner on guitar and Jack Fallon on bass. The set's got a rootsy feel – perhaps more so than if it was a contemporary blues album in a regular American setting. Titles include "Slow Drag", "Bad Life", "Don't Leave Me Mary", and "Seafood Blues". Champion Of The Blues features spare solo work by Jack – only piano, vocals, and a bit of foot shuffling for percussion! The sides were originally recorded by the Storyville label in Denmark, and issued here by Atlantic. The sound's similar to Jack's earlier work on Atlantic, but perhaps a bit more folksy – and titles include "Snaps Drinking Woman", "I Had A Dream", "Reminiscing With Champion Jack", "House Rent Party", and "Misery Blues". Art FarmerTo Sweden With Love ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1964. Used ... $5.99
A really unique little album that features jazz versions of themes from Swedish folk music – all served up by a sublime quartet that features Art Farmer on flugelhorn and Jim Hall on guitar! The exploration of folk roots in jazz is not a new one – and a number of the postwar Swedish modernists were especially strong in their love of folk music for inspiration. But the genre's never been handled this well before, and Farmer's warmly lyrical sensibilities really transform the tunes – opening up a timeless sense of expression in their melodies, yet still keeping things strongly in a modern jazz vein with his timing and phrasing. The other members of the piano-less quartet certainly help in this respect – Steve Swallow on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – and Jim Hall's guitar is always a treat in a stripped-down session like this. The sound of the record is both warm and eerie at the same time – and titles include "Va Da Du?", "De Salde Sina Hemman", "Kristallen Den Fina", and "Visa Vid Midsommartid". CD

Mindblowing work from Roberta Flack – an album that should be in the collection of any fan of righteous soul music! Forget all the wimpier modes of Flack's later years – because here, the young Roberta is a vision of positive power and spiritual soul – a singer with roots in jazz, which helps to transform some of the album's very surprising song choices – and a depth and sensitivity that goes way past the usual female soul modes of the time. Donny Hathaway handled half the arrangements for the record – a perfect choice for Flack – and Deodato handles the other, with some large arrangements that still have just the right sort of gentleness to go with her voice. Titles include a version of "Reverend Lee", penned by Eugene Daniels – and the great "Gone Away", written by Curtis Mayfield, Leroy Hutson, and Hathaway – plus the tracks "Just Like A Woman", "Do What You Gotta Do", "Business Goes On As Usual", and "Until It's Time For You To Go". Atlantic (Germany), 1984. Used ... $11.99
A later and lesser-known set from Dizzy Gillespie – and a real departure both from his bop of the 40s and his funk of the 70s! The album's got Dizzy working in a more modern soul-influenced setting – blowing over larger electric-tinged backings arranged by Kenny Kirkland, Marcus Miller, and Barry Eastmond – almost in a format that's a bit like some of Freddie Hubbard's R&B-styled albums of the time. Gillespie's always up for the challenges of any sort of session, and more than holds his own in the format – but the overall credit for the groove is less focused on his solo work, than it is the smoothly soulful style of the backings. The album includes a great cover of Leroy Hutson's "Closer To The Source" – complete with a sweet female lead vocal – plus other jazz versions of R&B material, like "It's Time For Love", "You're Number 1 In My Book", and "Textures". A round two knockout for Gnarls Barkley – an album we think is better than the landmark St Elsewhere LP – boisterous pop art & soul from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo! We were slightly trepid when the Odd Couple was announced, fearing a hasty attempt to rekindle the magic that clearly caught everyone by surprise a couple years ago, but that worry is squashed. This is a near masterpiece, kids! Incredibly deep and impressively spun from obscure sound library records, Italian soundtracks, and all kinds of moddish samples by Danger Mouse – with warmly scratchy vocals by Cee-Lo that are as fresh as anything he's ever done. Again, he's laughing in the face of darkness and depression, and somehow making a party out of it! Fantastic work from one of the most unique talents in jazz! Rufus Harley plays bagpipes – yes, that's right, bagpipes – in a modal Coltrane-esque way that's simply got to be heard to be believed. He uses the drone capability of the instrument to explore reed patterns in the same way that Coltrane did, inspired a bit by Eastern sounds, especially Indian music, but also working in an Afro-centric mode that reclaims the bagpipes as an instrument rooted in the middle east (where it was first picked up by soldiers during the crusades, and brought north to Scotland.) The whole thing might sound incredibly silly, but when you hear the music, you'll be convinced – and this CD is set up to do just that. The collection takes 9 tracks from Rufus glory days at Atlantic Records during the late 60s – and features Harley not only on bagpipes, but on tenor, soprano, and flute – playing in groups that feature players like Roy Ayers, Herbie Mann, Sonny Stitt, James Glenn, and Don Patterson. 2 70s groovers from Eddie! In The UK features Eddie with a number of London rock and beat group players – including Albert Lee and Jeff Beck on guitar, Chris Squire on bass, Tony Kaye on moog, Steve Winwood on electric piano, and Zoot Money also on piano. The set's not surprising, given the influence that Eddie's electric jazz of the 60s had on these players – and there's a free loose jamming style that's better than you'd think. Titles include "Baby", "Conversations Of Everything & Nothing", "I Waited For You", and "He's Island Man". Is It In is one of Eddie's groovier Varitone albums, and a record that has a very electric sound to it! At times, Eddie's electric sax is so off-beat that you'd think he was playing a synthesizer instead of a sax, but in true Harris form, he always keeps it funky, and even the weird sounds have a great groove to them. David Newman's Bigger & Better is more of a straight soul jazz outing – but the groove's still pretty nice, and it features some nice numbers like "The Thirteenth Floor", "Ain't That Good News", and "For Sylvia". ✨✧ Donny HathawayExtension Of A Man ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1973. Used ... $5.99
Perhaps Donny Hathaway's greatest album from the 70s, and certainly the one with the most amazing arrangements! The record was Donny's last studio session, and it's got him working at a level that's far advanced from even his groundbreaking earlier work – using complicated rhythms and sophisticated string passages – but also throwing in some killer jazzy bits that make for some of his funkiest work ever! The liner notes have Donny showing off his musical training in evaluations of the song structures, but the music alone should be enough to convince you this one is great! Includes "The Slums", a funky rollicking tune that is sort of a follow-up to "The Ghetto"; "Valdez In The Country", a totally catchy instrumental with loads of electric piano, and a very Bob James-esque sound; the jaunty "Flying Easy"; and the spiritual soul cuts "Someday We'll All be Free" and "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry (parts 1 & 2)". ✨✧ Donny HathawayThese Songs For You, Live! ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic document of the genius of Donny Hathaway – and a set that shows that the 70s soul legend was every bit as wonderful live as he was in the studio! The set features a huge number of unreleased tracks by Donny – grouped with numbers pulled from his two successful 70s live sets (Donny Hathaway Live and In Performance, neither of which are in print in the US!) The tracks feature Donny on electric keyboards and organ – leading a group of players that includes Phil Upchurch, Cornell Dupree, and Richard Tee – all coming together in a tightly-jamming small group formation that's quite different than the backing on Hathaway's studio albums. There's a warm, organic feel to the set that's really wonderful – and which offers new versions of tunes you might only know from their studio incarnations, as well as a few covers of work by contemporary soul acts that come off amazingly well. Includes previously unreleased live recordings of "Flying Easy", "Valdez In The Country", "Superwoman", "Yesterday", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" – as well as a short interview – plus the tracks "Little Ghetto Boy", "A Song For You", "Sack Full Of Dreams", "The Ghetto", and "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". ✨✧ Freddie HubbardBacklash ... CD
Atlantic, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Freddie Hubbard's greatest records – a soaring bit of soulful modernism that's almost a precursor to 70s sounds on record labels like Black Jazz or Strata East! Freddie's at his early best here – stepping aside from some of the more serious Blue Note modes, and definitely feeling himself more strongly – reaching out with this righteous vibe that's quite different than later electric work in the 60s – and which, quite honestly, almost comes through best on this record than anywhere else! The group are wonderful too – and James Spaulding turns in some killer flute and alto work for the date – perfect for Freddie's lines on trumpet. Titles include "Backlash", "The Return Of The Prodigal Son", "Little Sunflower", and "On The Que Tee". CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardBlack Angel ... CD
Atlantic (Germany), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally fantastic set from the turn of the 70s, and one of Freddie Hubbard's most soulful, spiritual albums ever – a seminal chapter in the evolution of soul jazz – and a record that was a keen inspiration for changes to come on labels like Strata East and Black Jazz! The group here features Kenny Barron on both electric and acoustic piano – really stretching out with a hip, open sort of sound – possibly his first of this type on record – and other players include James Spaulding on alto and flute, Reggie Workman on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and Patato Valdes on added percussion – giving a more complicated groove to the best numbers. Tunes are all long and well-penned – three by Freddie himself ("Eclipse", "Spacetrack", "Gittin' Down"), one by Kenny Barron ("Black Angel"), and one by Walter Bishop (the original recording of his classic "Coral Keys"!) ✨✧ Freddie HubbardHigh Blues Pressure ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real gem from Freddie Hubbard's 60s years – an all soul jazz outing, cut with a hip array of players that show that young Fred was definitely on the forefront of jazz at the time! Despite the "blues" in the title, the main groove is spiritual soul jazz – in a style that puts Freddie a few years ahead of the Strata East crew, and working here in a mode that he oddly didn't continue into the 70s. The album's got a really righteous sound overall – with long tracks that really stretch out wonderfully with rich feeling and spirit – thanks to work from players who include Weldon Irvine and Kenny Barron on piano, Bennie Maupin and James Spaulding on reeds, and Freddie Waits on drums. The set's filled with great original tunes that include Freddie's "Latina", "True Colors", and "For BP" – as well as a version of Weldon Irvine's "Can't Let Her Go". CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardSing Me A Song Of Songmy/Echoes Of Blue ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1971/1976. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A great collection of 2 of Freddie's 70s sides for Atlantic. Sing Me A Song is a wild record! Freddie Hubbard plays trumpet amdist a very out, very avant set of electromagnetic and processed sounds, put together by Ilhan Mimaroglu! The record is completely unlike any other album Hubbard did, and sounds more like an early musique concrete work than it does an early 70's album on Atlantic. In fact, at times, you forget that Hubbard's playing at all, as the wash of noise is far more compelling than his solos, which have sort of a cold processed feel in most parts. Tracks include "Threnody For Sharon Tate", "The Crowd", and "What A Good Time For Kent State". Echoes is a nice set that often gets overlooked, but which features a sweet mellow funky sound arranged by Freddie, produced by Arif Mardin, and which features playing by Bennie Maupin, James Spaulding, and Kenny Barron. Titles include "Backlash", "Echoes Of Blue", "Latina", and "On The Que-Tee". CD

Deon JacksonLove Makes The World Go Round ... CD
Atlantic/Collectors Choice, 1966. Used ... $4.99
Great stuff from one of our favorite soul vocalists of the 60s! We love Deon Jackson – we love his sweetly honest vocal style, we love his songs, and we love the great production he gets from the legendary Ollie McLaughlin! This album is the only one he ever cut – and it's a masterpiece all the way through! Ollie's production mixes some wonderful lilting qualities with rollicking hard soul – it's a far-reaching approach that works incredibly well with Deon's unique approach to the vocals! Includes the super-hit "Love Makes The World Go Round" and a charming uptown soul take on "King Of The Road", plus "Come Back Home", "1-2-3", "You Said You Love Me", "SOS", "Love Is What You Make It" and "Hush Little Baby". Milt Jackson & Coleman HawkinsBean Bags ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1958. Used ... $13.99
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really work nicely with the album's slight Latin inflections – a bit like those you might hear on some of Hawkins' Impulse Records material from the same generation. Milt Jackson's vibes are great too – chromatic and edgey, and set up with rhythm support from Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. Titles include "Indian Blues", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Sandra's Blues", "Stuffy", and "Close Your Eyes". CD

Willis JacksonWillis Jackson Plays With Feeling/Way We Were ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1975/1976. Used ... $9.99
The title's righter than you might think – as Willis DOES play with feeling, despite a cheesy-looking cover that might make you think otherwise! The groove here is tight and smooth 70s jazz funk – very much in the mode of some of the more fully-arranged Kudu and CTI albums of the time, with Willis out in the lead, blowing wonderfully over the top in a Stanley Turrentine sort of mode. Arrangements are by Ricky West and Bert Keyes, and the album's got a really great version of the Afro Funk classic "Racubah", plus the upbeat tunes "Singing Bass" and "Do Your Super Thing", and the slower, harder, guitar-based "Do It To It". The soulful sax of Willis Jackson meets the Philly Soul mecca of Sigma Sound – and the result is a surprisingly wonderful album! Willis blows in the lead on all tracks, supported by legendary Sigma players – and the sound is a lush and sweetly soulful one, almost an instrumental version of the Philly work that had been coming out from some of the mellower soul groups on Atlantic at the time. Phil Hurtt co-produced the album with Tony Bell – and Phil also sings on the set, mostly working in background chorus modes, but occasionally speaking in a warm, romantic mode that's really nice. Titles include a nice remake of "Pick Up The Pieces", plus "Lady Marmalade", "Fire", "Love's Theme", "Brown Eyed Girl", and "Sideshow". CD
