Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Atlantic StarrAtlantic Starr (with bonus track) ... CD
A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used ... $12.99
The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. Titles include "Gimme Your Lovin", "The Love I Never Had", "Visions", "Keep It Comin", "Stand Up", "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "We Got It Together", and "Being In Love With You Is So Much Fun". CD features a bonus track – "Stand Up (single version)". CD

✨✧ Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

Aretha FranklinAretha Franklin – The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! Jerry Wexler is at the production helm on all these numbers – as the man who really helped Aretha find her special style at the label – and the cuts also feature arrangements from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, both studio talents who'd really help Franklin open up with a new sense of power and majesty as the 60s moved on! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You". 2CD set features 9 more tracks than the 2LP version – with titles that include "Let It Be", "You & Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "Prove It", "Dr Feelgood", and "It Ain't Fair". ✨✧ Rufus HarleyCourage – The Complete Atlantic Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". ✨✧ Freddie HubbardArt Of Freddie Hubbard – The Atlantic Years ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer work from Freddie Hubbard – some key transitional sides for Atlantic Records, and easily some of his most soulful work ever! Freddie started out as a bopper on Blue Note, but then made a great shift at Atlantic – exploring space and sound in a really wonderful way, and opening up towards some of the killer modes you'd know from his classics on CTI. There's just a bit of electricity in the mix here, as most cuts are acoustic – but they already stretch out in some hip, spiritual styles that are really great. Titles include "For BP", "Lonely Soul", "High Blues Pressure", "Midnite Soul", "Black Soldier", Interlude I", "Echoes Of Blue", "Threnody For Sharon Tate Comment", "Spacetrack", "Leap Frog", "Up Jumped Spring", "Latina", and "On The Quee Tee". Most moments are instrumental, but the set also features some vocals from Ben E King, Hamish Stuart, and Alan Gorrie on lead – plus backup from a group that includes Luther Vandross as well. A gem of a record from Nat Adderley – filled with short soulful groovers, and done with an upbeat vibe that rivals some of Cannonball's best of the 60s! Joe Zawinul handled the arrangements, so there's definitely a strong influence here from the Cannon group – and although the players shift a bit throughout the course of the set, there's a really unified feel – thanks to a top-shelf lineup that includes Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Benny Powell on bass trombone, and Willie Bobo on percussion! The set features all original material by Nat – with older gems and new favorites that include "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Never Say Yes, "Jive Samba", "Stony Island", "Junkanoo", and "Work Song". A couple tracks feature lead vocals by Yvette Cason or Willie Dee, and players include Michael Brecker, Bunny Brunell, Howard Johnson and Neppie Noya. A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". CD

✨✧ Mose AllisonSwingin Machine ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mose Allison creates a very swinging machine for this classic Atlantic Records set – by adding in a few horns to his usual trio, and making for a groove that's even jazzier overall! Mose's vocals are wonderful, as always – extremely witty, with that great balance of New Orleans roots and 60s hipster jazz – served up in a host of his own wonderful compositions! But at some points, the horns step out even more strongly, and get some great solo play of their own – with excellent work from the obscure Jimmy Reider on tenor sax, a surprisingly great player we wish we knew better – plus the great Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Some tunes are instrumentals – and titles include the classic"Swingin Machine", plus "Do It", "Stop This World", "Promenade", "If You're Goin To The City", and "Saritha". CD

Great 60s work from Mose Allison – a key record cut at that time when his influence was being felt strongly on the other side of the Atlantic – by younger London singers like Georgie Fame and Zoot Money! Mose is almost answering back with this great little record – hitting things with a sharp punch, and a nice undercurrent of soul and R&B – always in that New Orleans-informed groove, with loads of wonderful self-penned lyrics that really make the set sparkle! Allison's piano is plenty strong in the lead, and the album features the unlikely rhythm team of Earl May on bass and Paul Motian on drums – adding in some interesting changes on titles that include "War Horse", "Wild Man On The Loose", "Power House", "Night Watch", and "No Trouble Living". The word from Mose is mighty darn hip – served up here in a sweet Atlantic Records session that seems to really hone into all the mod influences his music would have in the 60s! The rootsy quality of Allison's earlier records is still firmly in place – but the group also has a tighter feel that's almost more soul jazz – thanks, in part, to work from Ben Tucker on bass – in a groove that's similar to some of his own contributions to 60s jazz. Titles include a great version of "Foolkiller" – one of Mose's greatest tracks – plus "One Of These Days", "Days Like These", "Your Red Wagon", "Look Here", "I'm Not Talking", and "New Parchman". CD

What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. ✨✧ AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Atlantic/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $22.99
An excellent smooth soul groover from Johnny Bristol! The album has Johnny stepping into a more sophisticated groove than he used on his early 70s albums for MGM – mixing together styles that sound a lot like those used by artists like Leroy Hutson or Leon Ware at the time, a mix of well-produced backings with just the right touch of strings, keyboards, and tight rhythms. Johnny's voice has a bit rootsier quality than you might be used to for this sort of album – which makes for an even more unique sound, especially on the mellower cuts. Tracks include "Do It To My Mind", "Have Yourself A Good Time Thinkin' Bout The Good Times", "You Turned Me On To Love", "I Sho Like Groovin' With Ya", and "She Came Into My Life". Nice one! CD

Excellent smooth soul from Johnny Bristol – working here in territory that's a lot more sophisticated than his earlier work, in the same vein as smooth modern soul singers like Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, or Prince Phillip Mitchell! The album's got a sweet warm feel – and the richness of the songwriting and vocals make us wonder why Johnny wasn't a bigger star on his own – because each new track is a gem, and the album's got a quality level to match the best of the biggest names of the 70s! However, it's also gems like this that keep us digging through the history of soul music – looking under the surface of the big stars to find excellent work from "almost rans" like Johnny! In addition to this rare appearance by Joe, the set's also noteworthy for some great tenor from Teddy Edwards – working here in a setting that's maybe even looser than some of his Contemporary Records dates of the same time – with great rhythmic help from the team of Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The record's more like a soul jazz side for Pacific Jazz, than a typical Atlantic Records date from this time – and it's got some tasty mellow groovers, like "Groove Funk Soul", "That's All", "Yesterdays", and "Play Me The Blues". Ray CharlesGenius Of Ray Charles (Original Master Recording) ... CD
Atlantic/Mobile Fidelity, 1959. Used Gatefold ... $14.99
Later Atlantic Records material from the legendary Ray Charles – a set that definitely lives up to the genius of the title, in that it shows a real sense of development in Ray's music! Charles has moved from the shorter R&B of his early Atlantic singles, to embrace some greater jazz-based sophistication – served up here with players who include Paul Gonsalves and Zoot Sims on tenor, Clark Terry and Joe Newman on trumpets, Melba Liston and Al Gray on trombones, and Freddie Greene on guitar – all players who really shift things towards a richer, fuller sound – setting the stage for Charles 60s growth at ABC Records, but with less of the country modes. Titles include Charles takes on classics like "Just For A Thrill", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin", "Am I Blue", and "It Had To Be You" – and the record also features a young Marcus Belgrave delivering a trumpet solo on "Alexander's Ragtime Band". More of a jazz album than the early vocal singles of Ray Charles – but a set that definitely is as great as promised by the title! Ray's in the lead on piano – taking some strong solos, and showing us what a sensitive phraseologist he can be when needed – really showcasing that side of his talents even more strongly away from his vocals. The album's got some great sidemen, too – David Newman on alto and tenor, Joe Bridgewater and John Hunt on trumpets, Emmott Dennis on baritone, and even a bit of guest work on bass from Oscar Pettiford. Newman and Bridgewater get in some nice solos – and titles include "Black Coffee", "The Ray", "Doodlin", "There's No You", and "Sweet Sixteen Bars". CD

Great early genius from the Clarke Boland Big Band – proof that Kenny and Francy were onto something great, right from the start! The album really has the group hitting the heights of their MPS years – stretching out way past earlier big band modes, into the hip mix of rhythms and soulful solos that made the ensemble unlike any other group in the 60s – a really groundbreaking approach to their music, delivered by a range of top-shelf players! Arrangements are by Boland, who also plays piano – and other group members include Benny Bailey and Jimmy Deuchar on trumpets, Derek Humble on alto sax, Carl Drewo and Zoot Sims on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax and flute, and Ake Persson on trombone – plus rhythm from the rock-solid duo of Jimmy Woode on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. A very full-on hard heavy fusion album! Drummer Billy Cobham lays down some massive hard beats, while Tommy Bolin wails away on guitar, Jan Hammer pounds on electric piano, and Lee Sklar noodles on electric bass. 2 cuts feature a different lineup with Joe Farrell and Jimmy Owens – but the rock-heavy one dominates the album, with a very hard sound. The best cut is the slow mellow funk number "Red Baron", which has great breaks and nice electric piano. The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension album for Impulse – and like that one, the session features Ornette and his contemporaries really stretching out – blowing like never heard before on record, and working in a highly unstructured setting! Other players include Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Scott LaFaro on bass – alongside regular group members Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and both Ed Blackwell and Billy Higgins on drums. Why these tracks weren't released at the time is a mystery to all, because the material is great, and ranks with some of his best stuff – and over the years, the value of the album has grown even more within the early Ornette oeuvre – as it contains key tracks that have come to define his edgiest moments of the early 60s . The LP includes "First Take", a 17 minute earlier version of the material the ended up on Free Jazz, plus additional quartet recordings with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell – on titles that include "Check Up", "Little Symphony", and the wonderful "Joy Of A Toy". A true giant step for John Coltrane – and one of the first albums to really showcase his talent as a writer – and his amazing ability for penning some of the most soulful, spiritual themes in jazz! Apart from the well-known title cut, the record's filled with other Coltrane classics – key early readings of "Naima", "Cousin Mary", "Mr PC", "Spiral", and "Syeeda's Song Flute" – all showing a new sense of timing, phrasing, and pacing in jazz – one that would go on to have a huge impact on players in the 70s generation! The group here is relatively straight – Tommy Flanagan or Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – but the players have never sounded better, and really match Coltrane's sense of power and imagination on these legendary tracks! Wonderful wonderful wonderful work from the legendary John Coltrane – and even though it's probably one of his best-selling albums of all time, it's still a treasure – and has an essential place in just about any jazz collection! We've heard the original title version of "My Favorite Things" a million times – but it still blows our mind the way Coltrane hits this incredibly soulful modal groove, twisting and turning on soprano sax, always keeping things interesting, so that we're surprised that the cut's 13 minutes have gone by so quickly! The rest of the record's equally great – and the 3 other long cuts are "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "Summertime" and "But Not for Me". As great today as when it was cut, and still one of Coltrane's most revelatory albums! With McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. CD

A magnificent little record from John Coltrane – one of his earliest expressions of unbridled spirituality, and a session that we've treasured for years! As you might guess from the title, there's a slight Latin focus to the record – but not one that has congas and bongos creating choppy rhythms – most just a bold, driving, modal sort of inspiration – of the sort that allows the tracks to open up and flow with some of the genius that Coltrane would show more fully later on Impulse! But honestly, we'd rate this one right up there with the best modal sides on Impulse – as the record's got a sense of flow and energy that's simply breathtaking – with lots of long tracks that let Coltrane open up on tenor and soprano sax, and which also feature work from Eric Dolphy (under the "nom du date" George Lane) on alto, plus Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, and Art Davis and Reggie Workman on twin basses! The title track "Ole" runs for a whopping 18 minutes, and takes up all of side one – and side two features the great numbers "Dahomey Dance" and "Aisha". The CD includes the bonus track "To Her Ladyship"! CD

A beautiful meeting of two major talents from the left end of jazz – recorded in the early 60's when both were working for Atlantic! Despite the "avant garde" title, this set is straighter than you'd expect – very much in the spirit of Coltrane's work for the label, but with perhaps some of the more angular styles that Cherry was laying down with Ornette Coleman at the time. The session has Coltrane joining Ornette's group of Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell – save for a few numbers that feature Percy Heath on bass instead of Haden. The set includes great readings of Ornette's "The Blessing", "The Invisible", and "Focus On Sanity", and Coltrane plays both soprano sax and tenor! CD

Two funky classics from Dr John – back to back in a single set! First up is Remedies, one of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! The album's got a nicely exploratory vibe – as the first side features shorter funky cuts, but the second half really stretches out, and features a side-long track that has the Doctor at his most freewheeling – mixing deep currents from soul and blues with all the great ear for studio techniques he'd developed over the years – fused into a sound that's almost a fantasy of a soulful subculture in the swamps. Titles include "Loop Garoo", "Wash Mama Wash", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Mardi Gras Day", and "Chippy Chippy" – plus the side-long "Angola Anthem". Desitively Bonnaroo is filled with tight funky work from Dr John – a second collaboration with producer Allen Toussaint, and a set that follows strongly on their Right Place record of the year before! The groove's not as messed-up as on the first few Atlantic records by the Doctor – but in it's place is a sweet electric funk mode, kind of an update on 60s New Orleans grooves – handled here by The Meters and a host of other key players from the Crescent City scene! Toussaint's production and arrangements are tight, but never slick at all – still much earthier than the later work, especially that on Warner Brothers, that was handled by the producer. And the tunes have a good focus that keeps Dr John on track lyrically – even though we'll admit that our main love of this record comes from the keyboards, bass, and funky drums! Titles include "Stealin", "What Comes Around (Goes Around)", "Mos' Scocious", "Rite Away", "R U 4 Real", "Let's Make A Better World", "Sing Along Song", "Go Tell The People", "Quitters Never Win", and "Can't Git Enuff". A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players – as Gil's working with a group of younger soul jazz and spiritual soloists that include Ted Dunbar, Billy Harper, and Hannibal Marvin Peterson – as well as the older soul modernist Richard Williams. But there's also some other specifically Evans-like touches to the record that stand out – like Gil's stark notes on acoustic piano and his lighter work on the electric keys – plus a bit of inventive synthesizer from David Horowitz, who makes a few tracks really crackle with energy. What can we say? We've heard this one a million times, it sold over a million copies – but it's still incredible! The record is Roberta's first, and it features her in a mellow trio format, augmented by some occasional larger arrangements by William Fischer. At most points, though, the sound is incredibly spare – with vocals that are much more soulful than any of Roberta's other records, and a sound that hints at Nina Simone, but which has it's own jazzy groove and deep sense of feeling. Includes the classic funky version of "Compared To What", plus "Angelitos Negros", "Our Ages Or Our Hearts", and "Tryin Times". CD

Sonny FortuneInfinity Is ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A beautiful set from Sonny Fortune – a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still with a deeply soulful finish that keeps the album fresh throughout! Nearly every track was written (or co-written) by Larry Willis, who plays piano and Fender Rhodes on the set, and really feels like Sonny's co-leader on the session – and who gives the album a hiply swinging feel that's similar to his own work at the time. Titles include "Samba Touch", "Perihelion", "This Side Of Infinity", "Turning It Over", and "The Blues Are Green". CD

Sonny FortuneWith Sound Reason ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
We love Sonny Fortune – because he always plays so great! Sonny started as more of an acoustic soul jazz player – but by the time of this session, he's working with a lot of electric backing, in a fusiony mode that should dampen his enthusiasm, but which only seems to spur him onto new heights! The group's got some killer keyboards from Larry Willis, tight guitar from Ray Gomez, and lots of Latin percussion touches that really make the grooves dance – but the real highlight is Sonny, whose tone and placement are impeccable, almost in the vein of Gary Bartz during his years with Larry Mizell, but perhaps a bit more soaring and searching. Titles include "Afortunado", "Georgiana", "Igbob's Shuffle", "Francisco" and "Come In Out Of The Rain". CD

✨✧ Aretha FranklinAretha Now/Lady Soul (Original Master Recording gold CD) ... CD
Atlantic/Mobile Fidelity, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 albums on one CD – and a gold CD at that! Aretha Now is one of a handful of crucial early Aretha Franklin albums for Atlantic – and a key example of her genius pairing with arranger Arif Mardin! Instrumental backing is by a hard burning Memphis/Muscle Shoals lineup that includes Spooner Oldham on electric piano and organ, Tommy Cogbill on guitar, Andrew Love and Charles Chalmers on tenor, Wayne Jackson on trumpet, and Roger Hawkins on drums – and even Aretha herself gets to play a bit of piano on the set. But the really amazing thing here is the way that this core live mode of backing is also given some airier, loftier overtones by Mardin and co-arranger Tom Dowd – in a way that lifts up the tunes a bit more, and pushes them away from straight indie southern soul – into the range of greatness that made Franklin stand apart from most of her contemporaries. A key example of this is the album's seminal reading of "I Say A Little Prayer" – but all cuts are great, and other tunes include "Think", "A Change", "You're A Sweet Sweet Man", "I Take What I Want", "See Saw", "Hello Sunshine", and "You Send Me". Lady Soul is one of Aretha's undisputed classics – a seminal session that furthered her deep soul agenda with key backings from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd! The Sweet Inspirations provide sublime backing vocals behind Franklin's maturing delivery of the lyrics – and the music is by an all-star group of players that includes Spooner Oldham, Bobby Womack, Jimmy Johnson, King Curtis, Tommy Cogbill, Roger Hawkins, and even Eric Clapton! Cuts include "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Money Won't Change You", "Come Back Baby", and "Ain't No Way". CD

Aretha FranklinSparkle – Music from the Original Motion Picture ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $16.99
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well at this point, but the album really gave her a push – and the super-hip setting let her record some of her best work of the 70s. If you own only one Aretha Franklin album from the 70s, it should probably be this one – as the mixture of soul, funk, and soundtrack grooves is great, and a refreshing change from some of the cliches that could show up on other records. Features the sublime "Something He Can Feel", plus "Loving You Baby", "Look Into Your Heart", "Sparkle", and Jump". CD

Tony FruscellaTony Fruscella ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1955. Used ... $18.99
The lasting testament of trumpeter Tony Fruscella – a great talent whose powers only flourished briefly on vinyl, and never so brightly as on this LP! The set's a well-composed one – gently grooving numbers arranged and written by Phil Sunkel, played by Tony and a group that includes Allen Eager on tenor sax. Eager's another talent who's not always represented as strongly as he should be on record – and this session is as great an appearance for him as it is for Fruscella. Titles include "Muy", "Old Hat", "Raintree Country", "Let's Play The Blues", and "Metropolitan Blues". CD

Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Kaddish – A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem ... CD
Atlantic/Water, 1966. New Copy ... $7.99 17.99
The one-and-only entry in the Verbatum series from Atlantic Records – a proposed spoken word offshoot of the label – but one that only ever issued this fantastic 60s reading by Allen Ginsberg! As you might guess from the cover's beautiful photograph by Richard Avedon, Ginsberg is at the height of his hippie years here – and the poem Kaddish is a freewheeling, spiritually-infused work that is quite different than some of the earlier beat material. Ginsberg draws both on his Jewish roots and his increasing conflict with society for the piece – which is presented here in a lively recording done at Brandeis in 1964. Reissue features new notes and Ginsberg items for the package! CD

Johnny Griffin & Matthew GeeSoul Groove ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1963. Used ... $16.99
A heck of a soul jazz treasure from the 60s – and one of the hardest-hitting jazz albums ever issued by the Atlantic Records label! The vibe here is almost more Prestige Records overall – with very gutbuckety work from Johnny Griffin on tenor and Matthew Gee on trombone – on gritty tunes that snap along beautifully, and have Geen hitting some of the best tones he'd ever record – trombone that's maybe in the spirit of Bennie Green at his best. The combo also features Hank Jones on both piano and organ – plus Aaron Bell on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – and titles are nicely unusual, and include "Mood For Cryin", "The Swingers Get The Blues Too", "Twist City", "Oh Gee!", "Here", and "Renee". Steve GrossmanPerspective ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
One of the warmer Steve Grossman albums of the 70s – a set that moves away from some of the sharper fusion of his indie label sets, but which still has plenty of fire in Steve's horn! Grossman plays tenor and soprano, and the styles range from soul-fusion groovers, to propulsive jazz jammers, to some mellower moments that are surprisingly nice! Other players include Howard Bugzy Feiten on guitars, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano and keyboards, Mark Egan on bass, and either Lenny White and Steve Jordan on drums. Things are usually a bit more stripped down than most mainstream fusion albums of the time – with lots of acoustic elements in the forefront, which makes for a setting that never dampens Grossman's power at all. Titles include "Olha Graciela", "King Tut", "Katonah", "The Crunchies", "Creepin", "Arfonk", and "Pastel". CD

Lars GullinLars Gullin Swings ... CD
East West/Atlantic (Japan), 1956. Used ... $9.99
Quite a rare set from this important Swedish player – one recorded in Sweden by Metronome, but issued here in the US on the short-lived East-West imprint of Atlantic. The tracks all feature Gullin on baritone sax – in a variety of settings that range through quartet, quintet, sextet, octet, and big band. As always, Lars pulls far more out of the instrument than any of his contemporaries could hope to – and the backing he gets from Swedish modernists like Arne Domnerus, Rune Ofwerman, Bert Dahlander, and Sven Ake Persson really help keep things moving along at a strong pace. Titles include "Half Nelson", "Ma", "Yesterdays", "Like Someone In Love", and "After 8pm". CD

Eddie HarrisElectrifying Eddie Harris ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1968. Used ... $19.99
Great stuff from one of Eddie Harris' greatest periods! This one was cut in the late 60s – when Eddie was creating his famous electrified Varitone sound – unique among other jazz players in that it actually added a lot to Eddie's work, instead of detracted from it (as with some other boppers who briefly picked up the instrument.) The Varitone gives Eddie a cool flat tone works extremely well with some of the album's mutedly funky tracks – like the long version of "Listen Here", the groovy "Sham Time", the Latiny "Spanish Bull", or the incredible "Theme In Search Of A Movie", written by the great Charles Stepney. Great bass work by Melvin Jackson, too! CD

✨✧ Eddie HarrisLive At Newport ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very cool sounds from the amazing Eddie Harris – a live set, cut at the popular Newport Jazz Festival – but one that's arguably even freakier and more freewheeling than some of Eddie's studio work for Atlantic! Eddie's horn is really plugged in for the set – a Varitone, which is blown with a rich variety of tones – including some very far out, echoey modes at the start – then fused into a sharper, soulful groove later on! The group's also got some really wonderful electric piano from Jodie Christian – and include Louis Spears on bass and Bob Crowder on drums – and the legendary Eugene McDaniels joins the quartet for some very hip vocals on one cut too. Titles include "Don't You Know The Future's In Space", "Carry On Brother", "Walk Soft", and "Silent Majority". CD
