✨✧ Albert MangelsdorffNow Jazz Ramwong – The Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet In Asia (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Tiger Bay (UK), 1964. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Brilliant modern jazz from German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – recording here in 1964, but sounding years ahead of his time, with an amazing a blend of jazz and Asian styles! The album's one of Mangelsdorff's best ever – a set of rhythmic tunes that seem clearly informed by the work of Ornette and Joe Harriott, but also based along eastern themes picked up by the group on a tour of the Orient – and performed by a sharp-edged quintet that includes Heinz Sauer on tenor and soprano sax, Gunter Kronberg on alto, Gunter Lenz on bass, and Ralph Hubner on drums. There's some nice traces of MPS/Saba modal and Jazz Meets the World styles – and overall, the rhythmic pulse keeps things from getting as free and out as on Mangelsdorff's 70s sides – really soaring, but never too far out – and always with a cool exotic groove. The whole thing's great – instantly striking, and always a treasure – and titles include "Sakura Waltz", "Now Jazz Ramwong", "Raknash", "Theme From Vietnam", and "Burungkaka". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousAsian Disco – Disco Divas, Funky Queens & Psych Ladies From Asia From The 70s to Early 90s ... LP
Aberrant, Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare set of disco tunes we never would have heard otherwise – most from the late 70s , and proof that back in the day, the sound of New York had a huge impact around the globe! Vocals on most cuts are in the local language – tracks here are from Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia – but the instrumentation often has plenty of the funky elements you'd know from American disco tracks – yet often taken into leaner territory, too – and given a slightly different spin in terms of production and arrangement – maybe a bit like some of the clubbier cuts you'd hear on a Bollywood soundtrack. The set's from the same folks who gave us the great Taiwan Disco compilation – and features work by Chailai & Sawanee, Lei Si Si, Ding Dai, Yasmin, Hit Girls, Grace Simon, Fatimah Razy, and Sum Sum & Pan Pan. ✨✧ Egisto MacchiAsia ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record that nicely combines the two different sound library sides Egisto Macchi – his scene setting ability with a lovely melody, and his deeper darker experiments on the further reaches of sound! The album's got a cover that belies its complexity – and within, you'll definitely hear Eastern melodies and instrumentation that echo the title – but mixed with some more complicated sonic elements that make the whole thing very different than just another travelogue-styled recording! Macchi has this amazing way of bringing out all these moody tones, even when things are tuneful – and the album's got this sense of complexity that's wonderful, even when the tunes seem to come across as more straightforward. Titles include "Luci Dei Traffico", "Ceylon", "La Citta Sacra", "Il Budda", "Corsa Nella Giungla", "Pescatori Di Ceylon", and "Raccolta Del The". LP, Vinyl record album

Martin RevMartin Rev ... LP
Infidelity/Bureau B (Germany), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
The brilliant solo debut of Martin Rev – a set that feels like it's peeled away all his best contributions from the first Suicide album, then found a way to serve them up with a slightly different vibe that really sets the album apart! There's lots of analog fuzz and echo – that same spacey style that made Suicide so great – but the keyboards dominate even more than before, as only one tune features vocals – which lets Rev do all these really cool things with the electronics – continuing his way of taking earlier prog, avant, and Krautrock experiments and fusing them into a leaner, meaner style for the punk generation! The album's got a very seminal sound – a key text in the cold wave generation – and titles include "Jomo", "Mari", "Baby O Baby", "Nineteen 86", and "Asia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nathan DavisNathan Davis With Georges Arvanitas Trio – Live in Paris – The ORTF Recordings 1966/67 (180 gram 3LP pressing) ... LP
Sam Records (France), Mid 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing music by one of our favorite saxophone players of all time – captured here at the height of his 60s genius on the European scene! The tracks here have never been issued at all – but stand as a perfect complement to the killer MPS/Saba albums by Nathan Davis – and are served up with a similar blend of soulful hardbop and modernist edges – qualities that are already present in the fantastic phrasing of Davis on tenor and flute, pushed even further by the equally great work of French piano legend Georges Arvanitas! Although Arvanitas could be out when he wanted, he could also swing like the best of them – and his pairing with Davis here is perfect, and really brings out both the soul and edge in both players – especially in the company of George's fantastic rhythm duo of Charles Saudrais on drums and Jacky Samson on bass. The set's full of other surprises, too – including a bit of organ from Arvanitas, and an appearance by Jack Dieval – and the whole thing is beautifully recorded by French Radio. Tracks are all long – and include "Mid Evil Dance", "Blues For Southeast Asia", "The Hip Walk", "Rules Of Freedom", "A5", "The Thing", "Love Ye The Neighbor", "Nathalie's Dance", and "Yesterdays" in both flute and tenor versions. ✨✧ Piero Umiliani (Zalla)Paesaggi ... LP
Liuto/Four Flies (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most seductive sound library albums ever recorded by Piero Umiliani – a set that was originally issued under his Zalla pseudonym, but which has all the best jazzy grooves of some of his famous soundtrack material from the end of the 60s! As on those records, Umiliani plays a host of great keyboards, especially organ – over rhythms that are mellow-stepping and slightly funky – often updated with modes borrowed from bossa nova, but brought into a more sensuous Italian soundtrack setting – balanced with nice touches on flute, guitar, and other instrumentation as well. The whole thing's wonderful – as lovely as your favorite soundtrack work by Umiliani, Piero Piccioni, or Armando Trovajoli – with titles that include "Porta D'Oriented", "Tanto Lontano", "Pianure D'Asia", "Oriente Rosso", "Prime Nebbie", "Nel Parco", "Vecchie Strade", and "Laguna Tropicale". ✨✧ VariousCambodian Nuggets ... LP
Akenaton (Egypt), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Heady sounds from the Cambodian scene of the late 60s – a set of work that mixes together modes that may well have Cambodia sounding like the the most psychedelic nation in Southeast Asia! The music here is of two types – one a transformation of older Cambodian styles with a strong influence from European pop and rock, the other a more direct version of psychedelic modes – with lots of heavy, freaky guitar lines in the mix! The vocals on both styles are often recorded with a version of echo that's much more East Asian than anything ever used in the Anglo world – and taken together, the two modes of expression make the whole album a really rich collection of fresh sounds. Titles include "I Wonder" by Eng Nary, "Navy A Go Go" by Sinn Sisamout, "Rom Sue Sue" by Liev Tuk, "Jam 10 Kai Thiet" by Ros Serey Sothea, "Yuvajon Kouge Jet" by Yol Aularong, "Jomreang Oun Chreang" by Choun Malai, "Do You No Wrong Again" by Thra Kha Band, and "De Quoi Pleures-Tu" by Baksey Cham Krong & Mol Kamach. ✨✧ Mort GarsonMother Earth's Plantasia (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Homewood/Sacred Bones, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, moogiest records we've ever heard from Mort Garson – and that's saying a lot, given that the man gave us the Wozzard Of Iz and a host of moog-based astrological records too! The album's billed as "mood music especially composed to aid the growing of your plants" – and while we doubt that claim, it's more than groovy enough without any herbaceous activity at hand – these cool keyboard lines that are often sweetly tuneful, but nicely tripped-out too – played by one of the best cats to really grab hold of the moog right at the start of its great musical run! Titles include "A Mellow Mood For Maidenhair", "You Don't Have To Walk A Begonia", "Concerto For Philodendron & Pothos", "Ode To An African Violet", and "Plantasia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brij Bhushan Kabra/Shivkumar Sharma/Hariprasad ChaurasiaCall Of The Valley ... LP
Gramophone Company Of India (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing setting for the groundbreaking guitar work of Brij Bhushan Kabra – set up here in a trio with Hariprasad Chaurasia on flute and Shivkumar Sharma on santoor! We already love Kabra's guitar on its own – played in a sitar-like way with all these amazing inflections and soundshaping moments – and it sounds even more wonderful here next to the cascading chimes of the santoor – dulcimer-like instrument that really brings an otherwordly quality to the record. The flute has a way of soaring out on its own, often with weird and unusual tones – and the group also features work on tablas on both sides too – on long tracks that include "Ahir Bhairav", "Nat Bhairav", "Piloo", "Bhoop", and "Pahadi". VariousPadang Moonrise – The Birth Of The Modern Indonesian Recording Industry 1956 to 1967 (with bonus 7 inch) ... LP
Soundway (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.99
A mindblowing look at a really stunning musical moment in Indonesia – a postwar period when older sounds from the nation were updated with more western-styled instrumentation – yet often at a level that still retained all of the charm of their roots! If you dig Indonesian gamelan or vocal performances, you'll find plenty to love here – as rhythmic and melodic elements from those worlds are mixed with jazz instrumentation, electric guitar, and plenty of percussion that often seems to draw a bit from Latin inspirations as much as it does from larger local ensembles and their musical legacy. The style is maybe a bit like musical shifts that were taking place in other Southeast Asian nations at the time – but the results are far less slavish to western pop, and still really retain all the cultural care of earlier years – sometimes in ways that are a lot more lean and personal, with extremely beautiful sounds throughout. Maybe one of the best collections the Soundway label has ever given us – with the usual detailed notes, and tracks by artists who include Orkes Kelana Ria, Mus DS, Zaenal Combo, Yanti Bersuadara, Band Nada Kentjana, Orkes Tropicana, Nada Kantjana, and Chris Byantoro. Aberrant (Spain), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Weird and wonderful grooves from the Taiwanese scene – tracks that definitely echo some of the disco and funky soul modes of the American market in the 70s, but which have plenty of strange twists and turns of their own! The vibe here is a bit like other collections of Southeast Asian pop hybrids from the 60s and 70s – material that's clearly influenced by the Anglo culture of the time, but which has plenty of localized touches – not just in language and instrumentation, but also in terms of production styles, which gives a lot of these tracks a really cool sound. Titles are all in Taiwanese, but we can say that the set features work from Tian Lu Lu, Liu Guan Lin, Wu Xiu Zhu, Luo Yan Li, Hua Yi Bao, Cui Tai Jing, and others. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousWild Paarty Sounds Vol 1 (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
On-U Sound/Lantern (Italy), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A legendary compilation – and one that marked the start of the huge On-U Sound legacy to follow throughout the 90s! The work here is maybe even more messed-up than some of the later productions by Adrian Sherwood – as there's maybe a bit more post-punk influence in the blend, alongside plenty of that Jamaican groove that was so important to both Sherwood and the UK scene at the time, already getting manipulated here in the way that made the producer and label such an important aesthetic force in years to come! Titles include "Bed Bound Saga" by Machine Gun Hogg & Co, "Woodpecker Sound" by Jah Woosh, "Quit The Body" by The Chicken Granny, "Dreams Are Better" by London Underground, "Demonic Forces" by Alan Pellay, "Afghani Dub" by The Mothmen, "The Dice" by Judy Nylon, "Yipee I Aah" by New Age Steppers, "Quante Jubila" by Prince Far I & Creation Rebel, and "Asian Rebel" by Suns Of Arqua. ✨✧ Captain BeefheartSpotlight Kid (2LP deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Reprise, 1972. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early 70s gem from Captain Beefheart – not as wild-eyed and whacked out as the late 60s glories – but still a good stretch weirder than most of the post psych, blues-steeped rock of the time! Ultimately, it's still Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, despite it being billed solely to Captain Beefheart on the cover (and his only album NOT co-billed with The Magic Band) – and we'd say it's their first album to go for a consistent mood from beginning-to-end, and we love it for that! If the Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off Baby records are the more feral early twin masterpieces – we'd say this one and Clear Spot are the wiser and more focused siblings, but no less classic! Tracks include "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby","Grow Fins", "There Ain't No Santa Clause On The Evenin' Stage", "Blabbern Smoke", "Alice In Blunderland", "The Spotlight Kid", and "Glider". Great 2LP version features lots of rare tracks – the never issued full length versions of "I'm Gonna Booglarize You" and "Pompadour Stomp" – plus the instrumental "Semi Multicolored Caucasian", and the tracks "Harry Irene", "Best Batch Yet (version 1)", "I Can't Do This Unless I Can Do This/Seam Crooked Sam", "The Witch Doctor Life (inst)", and "Two Rips In A Haystack/Kiss Me My Love". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsNewk's Time (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
About as classic as you can get for Sonny Rollins during the 50s – from the cover right down to the incredible solos on the set! The album's got Rollins really stretching out – still not finding the freer trio mode of his Vanguard session, but still bringing in plenty of fresh ideas in both his phrasing and the construction of his tunes – way more than just the roots of his (still excellent) years as a boppish player. The group's nice and loose – with Wynton Kelly on soulful piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all able to snap into a groove when needed, but also letting Rollins really lay back into a solo too. Titles include the sublime "Asiatic Raes", plus "Namely You", "Tune Up", "Wonderful Wonderful", and "Blues For Philly Joe". If you've ever needed a record to convince you how great Rollins is, this might just be the one! LP, Vinyl record album

Minky, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cambodian rock, pop and psychedelia from the 60s & 70s – compiled by the members of Dengue Fever, LA's modern torchbearers of rare prime rock era rarities from Cambodia! It's wonderful stuff – like a lot of the sounds from the pulpy garage rock era Asian underground, most tunes have love female vocals, but the instrumentation varies from raw r&b & kind of moddish influenced sounds, to more psychedelic electric guitar and hazy melodies, bits of funk, and strains that come closer to traditional Cambodian sounds. The tracks were culled for rare cassette tapes, and the sound quality is top notch! Titles include "Give Me One Kiss" by Dara Chom Chan, "Don't Speak", "Jombang Jet", "I Will Marry You" and more by Pan Ron, "Shave Your Beard", "Flowers In The Pond", "I Will Starve Myself To Death", "Cold Sky" and more by Ros Sereysothea. 12 tracks in all. Finders Keepers (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hypnotic sound library material from Italian composer Daniela Casa – some of her rarest work from the mid 70s – recorded in her home studio and never before released commercially! It's very compelling work, with a range of styles from minimalist soundtrack music, to fairly heavy psych, to sitar-driven strings, to airy flute pieces and beyond. It was recorded for use in radio, television and film, but it honestly works just as well as melodic, if experimental instrumentals that masterfully blends and straddles genres. Titles include "Ricerca Dela Materia", "Pericolo", "Dimensione Concreta", "Grosse Cilindrate", "Avventura", "Visione Surreale", Occultismo", "Fantasia", "Motocross", "Dimensione Astrata", Ugnoto", "Circo Del Bimbi", "Sovrapposizione Di Immagini" and more. A contemporary set, but one with a very old school Brazilian vibe – acoustic guitar and vocals from Gabriel Da Rosa, set to some warm post-bossa arrangements from Pedro Dom! Dom produced the record too, and the whole thing's got a nicely understated quality – with percussion that hints at a bit of samba influence, but always in a gentle way – and use of slight keyboards, flute, and tenor – warming things up just a bit, but in all the best ways to really give the record a unique sort of personality! Titles include "Jasmim", "Idiossincrasia", "So You Can Se Me", "Dona Chica", "Cachaca", and "Batuque". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Piero UmilianiTemi Descrittivi Per Piccolo Complesso ... LP
Liuto/Holy Basil (Italy), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful sound library set from Piero Umiliani, and one that's overflowing with contributions from some mighty hip jazz musicians on the Italian scene of the 70s – including Enrico Pieranunzi on both electric and acoustic piano, Oscar Valdambrini on trumpet, Dino Piana on trombone, and Bruno Tommaso on bass – all working with very cool organ and moog from Piero himself! There's flute on many tracks – played by both S Genovese and N Rapicavoli, both players we don't know at all – and the instrument is often used in these cool, compressed ways that are mighty nice – and which make a stunning sonic counterpart to the other instrumentation, especially when Umiliani turns up some of the odd effects in the production! Titles include "Regalita", "Babilonia", "Chiaroscuro", "Battimenti A Tarantella", "Flauto Notturno", "Penombra", and "Fantasia Italica". LP, Vinyl record album
