Ashford & SimpsonCapitol Gold – Best Of Ashford & Simpson ... CD
Capitol, 1980s. Used ... $3.99
A wonderful selection of work by the team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson – a batch of tunes that focuses on their tight 80s work for Capitol Records! The pair may be best known from this era for their mega hit "Solid" – but Nick and Valerie changed the face of duet soul forever long before that sweet, if ubiqitous number– the boy/girl soul sound into a strident, mature, tightly-grooving mode! This set splits the difference between uptempo, sophisticated soul and a more delicate, ballad mode. Titles include "It Seems To Hang On", "Found A Cure", "Street Corner", "Love It Away", "I'll Take The Whole World On", "High-Rise", "Solid", "Outta The World", "Count Your Blessings", "Nobody Walks In LA", "Cookies And Cake", "I'll Be There For You" and more. Ashford & SimpsonHigh Rise ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Always-great work from the team of Ashford & Simpson – the kind of a record that has them at the top of their game, even though they'd changed their overall sound over the years! The vibe here is more in an 80s groove mode than some of the duo's Warner albums, but they've still got an undeniable talent for a massive hook – the kind that makes even the simplest tunes really go over the top. Plus, they're just about one of the only male/female duo teams that you can hear on record and actually believe that both singers are on the same page! Titles include "Side Effect", "Experience", "It's A Rush", "High-Rise", "Still Such A Thing", "It's Much Deeper", "I'm Not That Tough", and "My Kinda Pick Me Up". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has bumped corners and is lightly bent at the top left corner.)

Near-perfect work from Ashford & Simpson – really grooving in full powerhouse mode here, and never missing a beat! By all rights, the team should have run out of steam by this point, but the album's another winner from their sublime Warner years – caught in a unique space between chart soul, ensemble funk, and disco – taking all the best elements of each, and really sending the whole thing home with some incredible vocals and impeccable production and arrangements! Titles include "Rushing To", "Love Don't Make It Right", "We'll Meet Again", "Get Out Your Handkerchief", and "I Ain't Asking For Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Sublimely satisfying work from Ashford & Simpson – a stone killer from the height of their late 70s glory days on Warner Brothers! The pair are working together wonderfully at this point – wrapped up in that blend of upbeat soul and righteous undercurrents that made them a real cut above in mainstream soul – getting great help from arrangers William Eaton, Paul Riser, and Al Gorgoni – all of whom know how to hit that perfect Ashford & Simpson balance between tightness, class, and soulful spontaneity! Backings are always filled with lots of jazzy touches, too – the kind of sophisticated soul elements other would cop from the pair in years to come – and titles include "Over & Over", "It's You", "If You're Lying", "Couldn't Get Enough", "Destiny", "So So Satisfied", and "Tried Tested & Found True". Darn solid work from Ashford & Simpson – one of the duo's biggest albums for Capitol Records, and a great set from their 80s run for the label! The groove here is a bit more heavy on keyboards and beats than before, but the pair still keep things plenty soulful with their positive, upbeat approach to the music – rich, full, and always steeped in soul! The title track, "Solid", is one of the most-remembered tunes from the duo – and other cuts include "Outta The World", "The Jungle", "Honey I Love You", "Babies", "Cherish Forever More", and "Tonight We Escape". Warner, Late 70s/2008. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Ashford & Simpson may have gotten their start at Motown, but they really found their groove at Warner Brothers – as you'll hear on this massive collection of tracks from their landmark late 70s years at the label! Even many decades later, the strength of this music is undeniable – a careful blend of soulful roots and upbeat rhythms – yet all in ways that never fall into standard disco cliches of the period! The Ashford & Simpson groove is a really unique one – always deeply soulful, even when well polished, and carefully put together with some of the best studio elements the pair could get their hands on – then produced to perfection with a sparkling sound that's years ahead of its time. This 2CD set offers up a full disc of 70s originals that includes some rare 12" mixes from back in the day – and it also includes a second CD of contemporary remixes that really pay tribute to the classics – the sort of modern re-edits and mixes that always keep the original sounds, styles, and rhythms intact. CD 1 features 14 tracks that include "Over & Over (12" disco mix)", "Have You Ever Tried It", "One More Try (12" disco mix)", "Send It", "Top Of The Stairs", "Don't Cost You Nothing (12" disco mix)", "It Seems To Hang On (12" disco mix)", "Found A Cure (12" disco mix)", "Bourgie Bourgie", and "Love Don't Make It Right (12" disco mix)". Great stuff! The record's got a great groove that offers a more soulful version of disco than most of the competing albums on major labels at the time – a perfect summation of the care and craft that Ashford & Simpson had always put into their music right from the start! The pair handle all production on the record, and also contributed all the songs too – and the whole thing's so wonderfully tight, right, and on the money, the album soars to the top even before the vocals come into the mix. Titles include more than a few club classics, like "Found A Cure", "Stay Free", and "Nobody Knows" – plus the cuts "Dance Forever", "Crazy", "Follow Your Heart", and "Finally Got To Me". CD

Warner/Rhino, 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
15 tracks – and a great selection of work by the team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson! The pair started out doing some excellent work at Motown during the early 70s – but it wasn't until they moved to Warner in the middle of the decade that they began to emerge as the powerhouse act they became for the rest of their career. Nick and Valerie changed the face of duet soul forever – taking it past the simple boy/girl themes of 60s work by artists like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell or Maxine Brown & Chuck Jackson, into a strident, adult, hard-grooving mode that forever changed the way male and female voices interacted in soul music. The set kicks off with a live medley of older Motown hits, which makes for a good comparison of modes – then rolls into classics like "Send It", "Found A Cure", "Nobody Knows", "Love Don't Make It Right", "Don't Cost You Nothing", "I'd Know You Anywhere", "Somebody Told a Lie", "Is it Still Good To Ya", "It Seems To Hang On", "Happy Endings", "Solid", and "Stuff Like That", done with Quincy Jones. Valerie Simpson really shines in the spotlight here, on an early solo outing for Motown – not yet paired with Nick Ashford at a vocal level, but still getting plenty of help from her future musical partner on both production and songwriting! The approach here is sometimes a bit more personal than later Ashford & Simpson material – as Valerie really shines on some of the ballads and mellower cuts, then lets loose with a righteous style that points the way at some of the great grooves to come! Includes the groovy "Keep It Coming", plus "Genius 1 & 2", "I Believe I'm Gonna Take This Ride", "Silly, Wasn't I?", and "Drink The Wine". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dynamic SuperiorsDynamic Superiors/Pure Pleasure ... CD
Motown/Soulmusic.com, 1975. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A great lost bit of mid 70s Motown – a pair of should-be classic albums by Dynamic Superiors – in a single set! Dynamic Superiors were a great harmony group with an east coast sound – quite different from the usual Motown combo in that their vocals were often allowed very free range, with less of the tightness of the usual Motown group soul album. Ashford & Simpson produced the record – with arrangements by Leon Pendarvis, Richard Tee, and Arthur Jenkins – and the whole thing's a sweet soul treasure that's got some excellent mellow soul cuts! Titles from the self-titled set include "One Nighter", "Don't Send Nobody Else", "Shoe Shoe Shine", "Star of My Life", and "Leave It Alone". Pure Pleasure is another sweet set – arranged with a bit more of a high stepping groove than some of the other Motown work of the time. Backings are handled by a range of talents that includes Paul Riser, William Eaton, Al Gorgoni, and Horace Ott – but the real charm is the way the group's innocent harmony style puts over the lyrics, all of which are very strong tunes written by the team of Ashford & Simpson. Titles include "Face The Music", "Hit & Run Lovers", "Deception", "Pleasure", "Nobody's Gonna Change Me", "Feeling Mellow", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", and "Don't Give Up On Me Baby". CD

A mega-hit from Peaches & Herb – best known for the crossover classic "Reunited", but equally great for a host of modern soul groovers! The duo first achieved fame at the end of the 60s – through a set of key pop soul tracks that had a warm and sweet finish. Here, though, the pair are stepping out with a bit more of an Ashford & Simpson vibe – more mature and groove-oriented – and getting some great help on production and arrangement from Freddie Perren. Titles include, of course, "Reunited" – plus "Shake Your Groove Thing", "We've Got Love", "Love It Up Tonight", "Easy As Pie", "Four's A Traffic Jam", and "All Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Tunes are long and clubby, but never throwaway pop disco – and with Ashford & Simpson at the helm, Diana Ross sounds better here than on most of her other late 70s work! There's a tight-stepping groove to most numbers – never too fast, and exploding with that fuller soulful undercurrent we love so much in Ashford & Simpson. SyreetaRita Wright Years – Rare Motown 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Rare early material from one of the hippest singers on 70s Motown – the heavenly Syreeta, best known for her seminal work with Stevie Wonder – heard here in the years before, on a rare single and a huge amount of never-issued tracks! Syreeta first worked for Motown under the name of Rita Wright – but apart from a 1967 single on Gordy, and a handful of compilation tracks in recent years, almost all her work for the label at the time appears here for the first time ever – a massive 18 of the collection's total 24 tracks – offering up a huge look at the early days of this wonderful talent! Even at the start, Syreeta's got a style that's hipper than most – righteous currents that point the way towards the 70s, and set her apart from some of the other female singers on the label – with a vibe that's completely sublime. We're really not sure why these cuts have been hidden for so long – because on any other label, they'd be hit material – especially given that production his handled by giants like Hal Davis, Stevie Wonder, Ashford & Simpson, and the Holland-Dozier-Holland team. One of the coolest sets of female soul you'll buy in a long, long time – with titles that include "Bad Boy", "Ain't I Gonna Win Your Love", "Beware Of A Stranger", "Love Child", "Since You Came Back", "Mind Body & Soul", "May His Love Shine Forever", "Something On My Mind", "That's What He Told Me", "It Don't Mean Nothin To Me", "Give Back The Good Things", "Can You Feel It Babe", "Save The Country", "Hurtin Me", "Love My Lovin Man", and "Where There's A Will There's A Way". Aware/Kent (UK), 1973/1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two wonderful albums from Loleatta Holloway – both a strong full-length document of her early genius in the Atlanta studios! First up is the Loleatta album from 1973 – and if you only know Loleatta Holloway as a disco singer, you'll be really amazed at this debut album – because Loleatta emerges first as deep soul singer with a strong southern vibe – very much in the mode the Atlanta scene did best, before picking up the pace a bit more as the 70s moved on! There's a mellow, blue sort of vibe to the record – but still plenty of that pride and power that made Holloway an equally great singer on an upbeat tune – served up here on tunes by Sam Dees, Ashford & Simpson, and other hip songwriters of the period – set to strong arrangements by Mike Terry, who does a great job of bringing out the lady at her best. Titles include "We Did It", "Mother Of Shame", "Only A Fool", "So Can I", "Our Love", and "Love Woke Me Up". Cry To Me is a wonderful album of southern soul from Loleatta Holloway! The record was her last in the deep soul mode – and it's a gem that should have made her as big as her later disco records – a really well-crafted extension of styles that Stax and Atlantic had done in the 60s, but given a smoother, more sophisticated vibe for the 70s! The record was produced by Floyd Smith, and it's got some of the most sophisticated production we've heard on a southern diva album from the 70s – with instrumentation that still boggles us with its brilliance. Case in point is the amazing cut "Cry To Me", which has these insane banks of "weeping" guitar that send chills down our spine! The cut was written by Sam Dees, who also penned some other fine material for the album – and titles include "I Know Where You're Coming From", "Just Be True To Me", "Something About The Way I Feel", and a cover of Ruby Andrews' "Casanova". Lonnie Simmons handles production, and brings in some hip undercurrents – instrumental moments that get past the obvious, and which really make the record hold up nicely over the years – with a groove that's almost more 70s, and with a looser indie feel overall. ✨✧ Candy & The KissesScepter Sessions (butterscotch vinyl pressing) ... LP
Scepter/Sundazed, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length album of work by Candy & The Kisses – a really great east coast girl group who recorded these tracks for Scepter Records in the mid 60s! The trio are great – and have a way of snapping sweetly and hitting a groove that might have sounded very familiar with a bit of Motown polish, but which is maybe even nicer here with some looser handling by Scepter – a nice sort of bite that's a bit like The Exciters at times! The label only issued a few singles by the group back in the day, which means that eight of the tracks here are previously unissued, and one more was only ever released as a promo track – brought together to give the world a long-overdue full picture of this really lovely group from Staten Island. There's a number of early Ashford & Simpson compositions in the mix – and titles include "The Last Time", "Out In The Streets Again", "I'll Settle For You", "Let Love Win", "Together", "Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me", "Looky Looky What I Got", "Keep On Searchin", "You Did The Best You Could", "Smokey Joe's", and "One Sweet Kiss". ✨✧ Dynamic SuperiorsDynamic Superiors ... LP
Motown, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great lost bit of Motown 70s! Titles include "One Nighter", "Don't Send Nobody Else", "Shoe Shoe Shine", "Star of My Life", and "Leave It Alone". LP, Vinyl record album

Motown/Soulmusic.com, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Aretha FranklinYou're All I Need To Get By/Pullin ... 7-inch
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Classic stuff – as Aretha's version of the Ashford & Simpson hit "You're All I Need" is augmented with lovely strings and large arrangements by Arif Mardin, very much in the style that Aretha was moving into after her first few sessions with Atlantic. "Pullin" is a bit harder, and has a nice hook! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Gladys Knight & The PipsAbout Love ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Gladys Knight with Ashford & Simpson – a perfect pairing of two post-Motown talents! Gladys Knight & The Pips are one of those groups that never stopped being great – and later albums like this are well worth tracking down, especially with the team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson making the quartet sound so great! As before, Gladys' lead vocals are tremendous – deeply soulful and always personal, quite far from any easy cliches – and supported wonderfully by the three male voices of The Pips. The Ashford & Simpson groove really helps keep things fresh, too – and the set's got a nice balance of uptempo cuts and some of the heartfelt mellow numbers Gladys always does so well. Titles include "Landlord", "Taste Of Bitter Love", "Get The Love", "Friendly Persuasion", "We Need Hearts", and a great reading of the club classic "Bourgie Bourgie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stephanie MillsTantalizingly Hot ... LP
Casablanca, 1982. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A real classic from Stephanie Mills – a record that has the singer finding a whole new groove for the 80s, while still holding onto that magnificent vocal approach that made her great right from the start! Mills gets some key help on production here from both the team of Ashford & Simpson and Mtume & Reggie Lucas – who help bring in some of their own modes to the record, in order to flesh out some of the core production work from Stephanie herself! And while the familiar groovers are always welcome, we love best the mellow cuts here – some midtempo numbers that have a nicely tripping style that really works well for the singer. Titles include "You Can't Run From My Love", "True Love Don't Come Easy", "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You", "Your Love Is Always New", and "Ole Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peaches & HerbWorth The Wait ... LP
Polydor, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Peaches & Herb get some really wonderful help here from Freddie Perren – who really helps them focus their groove nicely for the dancefloor! Given the already-great vocals from the pair, and the long legacy of upbeat work from Freddie, the album's got a heck of a lot going for it – especially as Freddie seems to be a bit sensitive to the earlier roots of the duo, and brings in a sound with older echoes, even amidst a clearly contemporary groove! Most tracks are upbeat, soaring, and joyous – all-out club soul with a bit of an Ashford & Simpson vibe – but there's also a few gentler tracks that round things out nicely, and return us a bit to the romantic ballad style of Peaches & Herb at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Hearsay", "Surrender", "All Night Celebration", "One Child Of Love", "Fun Time", "Discover You", and "The Love Stealers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Diana RossDiana Ross (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark record for Diana – her first solo effort after leaving the Supremes, and a well-conceived batch of tracks produced by Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson! The album's got a warm, mature approach that really separates the work from Diana's earlier girl group past – as Ashford & Simpson take her into territory that hints at many of the musical changes to come, but which still has a freshness that breathes new life into Ross' vocal approach. Includes the super-bit hit version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", plus the tunes "Reach Out & Touch Somebody's Hand", "Now That There's You", "You're All I Need To Get By", "These Things Will Keep Me Loving You", "Dark Side Of The World", and "Where There Was Darkness". Plus, the CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – including a previously unissued live version of "Something On My Mind", 3 alternate mixes of tracks from the record, and 4 previously unissued tunes produced by Bones Howe, including "Time & Love", "Stoney End", "The Interim", and "Loves Lines Angles & Rhymes". Motown, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great clubby work from Diana Ross – all tracks pulled from her album The Boss – and featuring some great production from Ashford & Simpson! "It's My House" is nicely mellow – and steps along with a midtempo groove that's a nice relief from the overdone drama of Diana's other club tracks. The flipside features "No One Get The Prize/The Boss" – brought together as a bit of a medley, and with a bit more groove – but one that's more Ashford & Simpson overall! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Diana RossSurrender (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Motown/Elemental (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stunner of a solo album from Diana Ross – one that has her working beautifully with the team of Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson – really taking off here into some wonderful new territory! The Ashford & Simpson sound is very much in place here – a soaring, joyous approach to the music that comes across with a bit more depth and maturity than Ross' earlier music with The Supremes – a great springboard for her solo years in the 70s, although without some of the overindulgence of later recordings. Paul Riser handled the arrangements – with that tight mix of strings and soul that made him one of Motown's greatest assets in the early 70s – and he still leaves plenty of space for Diana's vocals to come across with a breathy, personal sort of quality. Almost all tunes were penned by Ashford & Simpson – and titles include "Surrender", "I Can't Give Back The Love I Fell For You", "And If You See Him", "I'm A Winner", "Didn't You Know", "I'll Settle For You", "Remember Me", and "All The Befores". ✨✧ Brenda & HerbIn Heat Again ... CD
Drive/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's Brenda & Herb, not Peaches & Herb – Herb Rooney and Brenda Reid of the excellent 60s group The Exciters – grooving together here in a really full-on vocal approach that's clearly inspired by the best aspects of Ashford & Simpson! Tracks have a lush, full feel – arranged by Lou Hemsey in a mode that works equally well on the dancefloor tracks and on the mellower numbers – and there's an ambitious approach that could fall flat on its fact, but hangs together well – thanks to the overall execution of the set! The group may not be one of the best-remembered pair from the disco years – but they do a great job here of matching the best work of their contemporaries. Titles include "I Think I'm Gonna Like This", "Lie Down", "I Wanna Make You My Sweetheart", "Two Of Us", "Look What They've Done To Our City", and "What Goes Around". CD
