✨✧ VariousEpic Americana – Pre War Blues, Country & Folk (3CD set) ... CD
Floating World (UK), 1920s/1930s/Early 40s. New Copy 3CD set ... Out Of Stock
A hefty amount of music from the early days of the 78rpm single – great work that mostly predates the Second World War, and which is divided up into three different styles for each different disc! CD2 features early country – back when it was known as "old time music" or hillbilly – 26 more tracks by The Stanley Brothers, Carson Robinson, Henry Grilland, Charlie Poole, BF Shelton, Uncle Dave Macon, Frank Hutchinson, Delmore Brothers, Milton Brown & His Brownies, Fiddlin Arthur Smith, and others. And CD3 features vintage folk – 27 tracks by artists who include Golden Eagle Gospel Singers, Texas Gladden & Hobart Smith, Luther Strong, Vera Hall, Hugh Gillespie, Leadbelly, Two Poor Boys, Blind Uncle Gaspart, Clarence Ashely, and many others. 78 tracks in all! Steve ReidRhythmatism ... CD
Mustevic/Universal Sound (UK), 1974. Used ... $16.99
A fantastic mid 70s set led by drummer Steve Reid – fronting a group of players who groove tightly, but with a really sinister sound! Reid is an absolute steamroller on this set – laying down a fast-paced, super tight funky backdrop for the rest of the players to groove fluidly over the top. Three of the five tracks run well north of the 10 minute mark – and those pieces are strong as can be, providing just enough room for the players to lay out a groove that lies beautifully between the mid 60s avant garde of Ornette Coleman and the spiritual soul jazz of the mid 70s. The core group includes pianist Les Walker (who penned most of the material here), plus David Wertman on a wonderfully rubbery bass, Michael Keith on trombone and Arthur Blythe on alto sax – with guests Chris Capers (trumpet), Melvin Smith (guitar) and Charles Tyler (baritone sax) on "Center Of The Earth". Great stuff, with a really dark edge! Other tracks include "Kai", "Rocks (For Cannonball)", "C You Around", and "One Minute Please". CD

✨✧ Jimmy SmithRoot Down ... LP
Verve, 1972. Very Good+ ... $79.99
Once an overlooked late Verve album, now a solid classic – and easily one of the funkiest albums ever from organist Jimmy Smith! The groove here is far different than the more familiar Jimmy Smith Verve sessions of the 60s – and the tracks open up in a really extended mode – vamping and jamming with a definite influence from funk, as Jimmy and the combo explore some of the hippest corners of their sound! Players include Paul Humphrey on drums, Wilton Felder on bass, and Arthur Adams on guitar – plus a bit of harmonica from Steve Williams – and there's almost lessons learned here from some of the Latin funk going on in the LA scene of the time. The set was recorded live, and features the great title cut – "Root Down" – a long drawn out groover with a slow funk feel that was made famous by a Beastie Boys sample years back – and other great cuts include "Slow Down Sagg", "Sagg Shootin His Arrow", and "Let's Stay Together". LP, Vinyl record album
(MGM pressing, with deep groove. Cover has light ring & edge wear and a spot of adhesive residue.)

VariousSolitary Man – The Early Songs Of Neil Diamond ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Sublime, rough hewn hooks and soaring melodies written by Neil Diamond – early classics and lesser known gems from his deep songbook recorded by other artists – including numbers by Bobby Womack with Peace, Lulu, Billie Davis, Arthur Alexander, Jay & The Americans, The Solitaires and many more! We love us some Neil Diamond, the man is a pop tunesmith par excellence – wide collar polyester superstar status aside – and many of these versions are straight up killer, and it's a lot of fun in a variety of styles, all the way. Includes "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)" by The Monkees, "The Boat That I Row" by Lulu, "Red Red Wine" by Tony Tribe, "Kentucky Woman" by Deep Purple, "We Got Love" by The Rocky Fellers, "Glory Road" by Arthur Alexander, "Ain't No Worry" by The Box Tops, "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon" by Mackie Edwards, "Cherry Cherry" by The Music Machine, "Sweet Caroline" by Bobby Womack & Peace, and more. 24 tracks in all! ✨✧ VariousYou Heard Them Here First – Rock's Icons Before They Were Famous ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really cool little collection – one that features early work by a host of famous rockers and 60s pop acts – many of whom are recording here before using their better-known later names! The music's pulled from both sides of the Atlantic, and often has a nicely rough-edged feel – bits of garage rock, mod soul,a nd more – performed by artists who include Peter Frampton, Mike Nesmith, The Byrds, Cher, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Ry Cooder, Neil Young, Lee Hazlewood, Narry Nilsson, Love, and others! As always with Ace, the notes are great – and really help illuminate these rare gems – and titles include "It's My Time" by The Mynah Birds, "Your Love" by Lewis Reed, "Stop Calling Me Baby" by Danny Lee, "Dream Baby" by Cherilyn, "In The Midnight Hour" by The Pigeons, "I Can Fly" by The Herd, "You Made Me Fall" by Marty Balin, "Prison Break" by The Paramours, "Rumble-Still-Skins" by Arthur Lee & The LAGs, "Groovy Little Suzie" by Bo-Pete, "Can't Let Her See Me Cry" by Mark Robinson, "Hole In My Pocket" by The Rockets, "Candy Man" by The Rising Sons, and "Liza Jane" by Davie Jones with The King Bees.
