✨✧ Anthony OrtegaAnthony Ortega Quartet ... LP
Vantage, 1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Excellent early work from modernist reedman Anthony Ortega – his first-ever session, and one that was actually recorded overseas with a Swedish group! The record's relatively straight – but it's got an icy tone that's just great, and which brings new life to tracks like "Lady Bird", "Body & Soul", and "Laura", as well as Ortega's own "Serenade To Sonny". ✨✧ Richard Groove HolmesWelcome Home ... LP
World Pacific, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure albums that Groove Holmes cut for Pacific Jazz – and one of his grooviest, too! The set's got a slightly larger group than usual – and the record features work from Wilton Felder, Anthony Ortega, and Tom Scott on saxes – plus George Freeman on guitar, and Paul Humphrey on drums! The tracks are short and have a sweet soul instrumental vibe – and cuts include a nice version of "Madison Time", plus "Groovin Time", "Oklahoma Toad", "Upward Bound", and "The Odd Couple". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing in the Unipak cover, with a partially unglued bottom seam.)

✨✧ Quincy JonesPawnbroker ... LP
Mercury, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A nice one by Quincy! Although the material here isn't funky like his 70's work, it does show Quincy as a strong composer of serious thriller-type material – working in a style that produces a nice amount of tension and mood, and which still has some nice touches of jazz. The group is filled with strong jazz players like Freddie Hubbard, Anthony Ortega, Oliver Nelson, Elvin Jones, and others – and the album features a vocal version of the theme by Marc Allen, plus a crazy spoken bit from the movie, by Rod Steiger! Other titles include "Harlem Drive", "Naked Truth", "Rack 'Em Up", and "Death Scene". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some light surface wear, name in pen.)

✨✧ Gerald WilsonCalifornia Soul ... LP
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very hip set of arrangements by LA bandleader Gerald Wilson – and one that takes his soul jazz stylings of earlier albums, and gives them a bit more of a late 60s funky sound. The band's pretty darn hip, and includes players like Anthony Ortega, Hadley Caliman, and Bobby Bryant – and titles include a nice working of "California Soul", plus "Lullaby From Rosemary's Baby", "Sunshine Of Your Love", and "Down Here On The Ground". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has a split top seam and light surface wear.)

✨✧ Gerald WilsonEternal Equinox ... LP
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Gerald Wilson's hippest albums for World Pacific – and all of them are pretty darn hip! This set is one of Gerald's last for the label – cut in a run of very successful, and very strong big band soul jazz albums that brought together the cream of the crop of the LA underground. Like the other sets, this one's got a great lineup – with players that include Anthony Ortega, Hadley Caliman, Harold Land, Ernie Watts, and Bobby Hutcherson – but the real strength of the album lies with Groove Holmes, who cuts some pretty fantastic solos on the album's best tracks – bubbling his Hammond through the larger arrangements with the space and expression that Wilson allowed his individual players on these sessions. Titles include great versions of "Aquarius" and Coltrane's "Equinox" – plus the original tunes "Celestial Soul", "Scorpio Rising", "Pisces", and "Bluesnee". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Gerald WilsonOn Stage ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1965. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The title's a weird one, because the album was recorded in the studio and not on stage – but we're hardly going to complain, because the record's so great! Wilson is really cooking for this one – leading an all-great group that includes Curtis Amy, Roy Ayers, Jack Wilson, Joe Pass, Bobby Bryant, Anthony Ortega, and other 60s LA soul jazz luminaries – all coming together in a style that's certainly big band, but which allows plenty of space for breakout solos – and which really grooves a lot more like a small combo session than you might expect! Titles include "Los Moros De Espana", "In The Limelight", "Musette", "Lighthouse Blues", and "El Viti". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Maynard FergusonBoy With Lots Of Brass (profile cover) ... LP
EmArcy/Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
There's definitely lots of brass here – as you might guess from the title – but never so much so that it gets in the way of individual soloing by Maynard Ferguson! The date features Maynard working with arrangements by Willie Maiden, Al Cohn, Ernie Wilkins, and Bill Holman – all for a largeish group that's wonderfully hip – Bobby Timmons on piano, Anthony Ortega on alto, Jimmy Ford on alto and tenor, Willie Maiden on tenor, Tate Houston on baritone, Richard Evans on bass, and Larry Bunker on drums – plus some added trumpets and trombones! Maynard himself plays both instruments on the date, and the album also feature some surprising guest vocals by Irene Kral on 4 tracks – spicing up the instrumental blend with lyrics on "Moonlight In Vermont", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Imagination", and "The Song Is You". Instrumental tracks include "Jeepers Creepers", "I Never Knew", "A Foggy Day", "Love Me Or Leave Me", and "The Lamp Is Low". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Blue MitchellCollision In Black ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An excellent pairing of funk talents – the tight trumpet of Blue Mitchell, and the super-soulful backings of Monk Higgins! Higgins has a groove that was schooled in the funky 45 underground of Chicago – and here, he really finds a great way to pick things up for Mitchell – relieving him of the duties of being a leader on his own, and coming up with tight jams that then let Blue step out as the main solo talent! Other players include Paul Humphrey on drums, Anthony Ortega on tenor, Jim Horn and Ernie Watts on flute, and Monk Higgins himself on organ, tenor, and piano! The whole thing's a great jam, and includes many tasty cuts, like "Deeper In Black", "Jo Ju Ja", "Blue On Black", "Monkin Around", and "Keep Your Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gerald WilsonFeelin Kinda Blues ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Ahhh . . . Gerald Wilson at the height of his powers – recording here in a mode that could never miss! The group's a jazz orchestra, but it's filled with some of the hippest cats on the west coast in the 60s – soulful soloists who include Anthony Ortega on flute and alto, Curtis Amy on soprano sax, Phil Moore on piano, Teddy Edwards on tenor, Victor Feldman on vibes, and Dennis Budimir on guitar – all grooving in tight formation that still allow plenty of space for solos on each tune – even when the group is vamping, romping, and hitting an all-out swinging 60s soul jazz groove! Includes versions of "Freddy Freeloader", "Watermelon Man", "Yeh Yeh", and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" – and other titles include "Well Son Shuffle", "Do Anything You Wanna", "When I'm Feeling Kinda Blue", and "One On The House". ✨✧ Billy TaylorMy Fair Lady Loves Jazz (Impulse pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1957. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great take on the score to the hit show My Fair Lady – heard here in one of the best jazz interpretations from the time! Billy Taylor really gets a great setting for the music here – one that moves past the more familiar small group takes on the tunes, and features soaring large group backings arranged by a young Quincy Jones! Jones really knows how to keep things groovy, and free from cliche – allowing plenty of space for Taylor to step out in fluid solos in the frontline, but also featuring lots of great horn work from players that include Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Don Elliott on Mellophone, Ernie Royal on trumpet, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, and Anthony Ortega on both alto and tenor! Titles include "Show Me", "Get Me To The Church On Time", "The Rain In Spain", "With A Little Bit Of Luck", and "On The Street Where You Live". LP, Vinyl record album
