VariousBear Family Rocks ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A hot host of killer rockabilly, R&B, and other smoking styles from the late 50s and early 60s – all pulled together in tribute to the long-running Rocks series from Bear Family records! The package has 30 tracks in all, the the blend of artists is really great, and shows just how much blues, R&B, and other pre-soul styles were important on the scene next to the rising wave of rockabilly and other early rock styles. And in fact, the package probably has more from those worlds of music than you'd expect from an collection that foregrounds the word "rock" – key proof that the name was initially lifted from black music, then used to peddle white pop as the years went on. Features work from The Treniers, Roy Milton, Little Junior Parker, Ella Mae Morse, Arthur Crudup, The Drifters, 5 Royales, Shirley & Lee, Amos Milburn, Lloyd Price, Slim Harp, Clyde McPhatter, Louis Prima, and many others! ✨✧ Jimmy WoodsAwakening!! ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work by this obscure LA legend! Jimmy Woods was one of the unsung geniuses of the west coast scene at the start of the 60s – and the few recordings he ever made stand as some of the best examples of how the avant garde was feeding into the hard bop scene out there – and with fantastic results! Jimmy's alto is hard and biting throughout – and although it veers in the direction of Ornette Coleman at times, the overall conception is very much Woods' own – with a starkly clear voice that should have made him one of the key figures in 60s modern jazz. The rest of the group includes the great (and also underrecorded) Joe Gordon on trumpet, plus Amos Trice on piano, Milt Turner on drums, and either Gary Peacock or the highly rhythmic Jimmy Bond on bass. Titles include "Awakening", "Roma", "Not Yet", "New Twist", "Little Jim", and "Anticipation". CD

Joao Donato & DonatinhoSintetizamor ... CD
Polysom/Far Out (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
One of the most unusual projects we've ever heard from the legendary Joao Donato – not the bossa jazz of his roots, but instead a fresh new groove created with his son Donatinho! The music is heavy on keyboards, and definitely has the 80s vibe promised by the cover – with the younger member of the duo handling keyboards from that generation, and singing with a bit of electric crackle in his voice – while the older Donato brings in all his classic charms, and creates a great sense of counterpoint in the process! The whole thing's nicely funky – sweet 80s electro overall – but Joao's presence also gives the whole thing a lot more depth, and it's clear from their duo moments that the pair really have a lot of warmth in their hearts for each other. Titles include a remake of "Quem E Quem", plus "Luz Negra", "Clima De Paquera", "De Toda Maneira", "Lei Do Amor", "Interstellar", and "Vamos Sair A Francesca". CD

Jorge NavarroNavarro Con Polenta ... CD
Aleluya/RGS (Argentina), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Fantastic funky fusion from the 70s Argentine scene – a set that begins with a killer take on the Led Zeppelin tune "Black Dog", and only gets even groovier after that! Jorge Navarro leads the group on piano, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – and the group is a tight combo with guitar, bass, drums, and percussion – shifting rhythms nicely to match the dynamic mood of Jorge's work on the keyboard – as he moves through 70s fusion styles and Latin jazz in a wonderful array of grooves! At times, Navarro's not afraid to use some funky phrasing on his electric keys – ala Herbie Hancock – and at other times, he's way down in the groove and really going to town. Titles include "Funk Yourself", "Black Dog", "Vamos Quedando Pocos", "Lucky Southern", "Despues De La Polenta", and "Repartamos El Funky". CD

✨✧ Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedro MartinezDuologue ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. Used ... $1.99
A record that's recorded by a duo, but one that's got a much fuller sound than you might expect – thanks to the magic of overdub, and to some great production help from Quincy Jones! Alfredo Rodriguez plays piano, Fender Rhodes, and keyboards – Pedro Martinez plays percussion – and both artists sing a bit too – and the whole thing sounds a lot richer than just a keyboard and percussion album might, as the songs bristle with the energy of a small combo – mixing together elements of Latin jazz and other global elements, in a mode that's warmly soulful and sometimes funky. Titles include a nice remake of "Thriller", plus "Estamos Llegando", "Yo Volvere", "Mariposa", "Cosas Del Amor", "Duologue", "Africa", and "El Punto Cubano". CD

Marcos ValleEstatica ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2010. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
An incredible record from Marcos Valle – maybe our favorite-ever of his recent-revival years! The sound here is sublime – a warm blend of funky rhythms, bossa roots, and larger orchestrations – all very much in the spirit of those legendary albums that Valle recorded for EMI/Odeon right at the start of the 70s – soaring, sophisticated, and never without a groove! Valle did all the arrangements for the set, but gets some great help on strings and horns from Jesse Sedoc – whose touches are really a key part of the Odeon-styled sound here – and a number of the tracks feature female vocals duetting with Marcos' lead, in a mode that's just like his classic work with Anamaria! Titles include "Prefixo", "Vamos Sambar", "Novo Acorde", "1995", "Esphera", "Eu Vou", "Papo De Maluco", and "Baiao Maracatu". CD

✨✧ VariousPortugal Instrumental – Les Solistes Et Virtuoses De Coimbra & Lisbonne 1950 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A really ear-opening set of music from the Portuguese scene of the postwar years – instrumental tracks that follow some of the stylistic developments of fado, but which often branch into wonderful sounds that are all their own! In a way, the set is a counterpart to the growth of flamenco guitar in Spain during the same stretch – but the instrument here is the fuller-bodied, more-stringed Portuguese variant of the instrument – almost a cross between an acoustic guitar and a mandolin, but played in ways that aren't really like either instrument! As you might be able to tell from the title, the set focuses on key musicians in two different scenes in the nation during the 50s – and is overflowing with rare instrumental gems from Carlos Paredes, Coimbra Quintet, Domingos Camarinha, Caravalinho, Casimiro Ramos, Artuer Parades, Jorge Fontes, Joao Alexio, and others. The set features 58 tracks in all – and complete notes in English and French! CD

✨✧ Cees SlingerSling Shot/Happy Times/Then & Now (3CD set) ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985/2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Three great albums from the Dutch scene! Sling Shot is a beautiful little album from Dutch pianist Cees Slinger – one that features a quartet with Clifford Jordan on tenor, Philly Joe Jones on bass, and the wonderfully-toned Isla Eckinger on bass! The presence of Jordan adds a deep edge to the set that really opens things up – bringing in a strong degree of soul to the session, and reminding us a lot of the work by the Jordan/Cedar Walton team back in the mid 70s. Slinger has a touch on the keys that's a bit like Walton too – lightly expressive, yet also rhythmically soulful – and the bass work of Eckinger drives things along with the same sort of bounce as Sam Jones on the classic Jordan/Walton outings of the 70s. Titles include "Slingshot", "Growing Up", "Waltonia", "Eye Witness Blues", and "Dizzizzit". Happy Times was recorded by Cees Slinger's Buddies In Soul – a very soulful quintet, with a groove that's right up there with the best hardbop of the late 50s and early 60s! The ensemble's led by Dutch pianist Cees Slinger, but it features some especially strong work from the hornmen – tenorist Simon Rigter and trumpeter Ruud Bruels, who've got a great way of coming together on the start of the tunes – stating their case with a nice degree of power, then breaking out with really searching, soulful solos – beautifully blown material that we'd rank right up there with any of our favorite older classics. The set list is great too – filled with well-chosen tunes that give the album the solidity of a Blue Note date from the 60s – titles that include "Barbara", "Happy Times", "When We Were One", "The Last Score", "Friday Night At The Cadillac Club", "Song For The Early Worm", and "Silent Majority". Then & Now is a record that really lives up to its title – as it features tracks from "then", recorded in the 60s with the great Ben Webster on tenor – plus tracks from "Now", which is the 2000 date of the second half – with a combo that features Bart Van Lier on trombone! Pianist Cees Slinger leads both groups, with the soulful vibe that made him one of the killers of the Dutch scene – and titles include "Sunday", "Better Go", "Really", "Ballad For Mrs H", "One For Amos", and "Witchcraft".
