✨✧ Lou DonaldsonAlligator Bogaloo ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder". Dave FrishbergGetting Some Fun Out Of Life ... LP
Concord, 1977. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Dave Frishberg's always getting some fun out of life – given the way he pens these witty little tunes, and sings them with a hell of a lot of charm! And this album's one to feature Frishberg at all his charming best – still with the jaunty, edgey qualities we love so much in Oaklahoma Toad, but turned back more towards more traditional jazz elements too – all set nicely into a small combo jazz mode, with help from Bob Findley on trumpet and Marshall Royal on alto – both horn players who give the album a fleshed-out feel that's a nice change from some of Dave's more piano/vocal-based records. A number of the tunes are instrumental – with Frishberg on piano – and titles include "Lotus Blossom", "Dear Bix", "Violet Blue", "Old Man Harlem", "Save It Pretty Mama", "Alligator Crawl", and "In A Mist". Dizzy GillespieMatrix – The Perception Sessions (The Real Thing/Portrait Of Jenny/Giants) ... CD
Perception/Castle (UK), 1970/1971. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Excellent funk from Dizzy Gillespie – featuring all 3 of his albums for the legendary Perception label! The Real Thing is an amazing mix of funky jazz, cool rhythms, and some nice Latin-tinged grooves – and it's a stunning representation of the way that Dizzy kept on growing as a musician, long after his bebop years were over. James Moody sits in with some very funky tenor, and Mike Longo is on piano. Tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator" – all short, hard, and funky! Next up is Portrait Of Jenny, which has a cool electric feel that you don't really associate with Diz. The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga" and "Diddy Wa Diddy". The last set is Giants – a live recording that features Dizzy with Mary Lou Williams and Bobby Hackett, in a pretty mellow, pretty straight setting that shows that Diz could still play straight jazz when he wanted to. Titles include "Love For Sale", "Caravan", "My Man", and "Birks Works". 2 CDs, with 21 tracks in all! CD

Dizzy GillespieReal Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

Judy HenskeJudy Henske – The Elektra Albums (Judy Henske/High Flying Bird) ... CD
Elektra/Ace (UK), 1963/1964. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A great two-fer – a pair of albums from the very cool Judy Henske – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Elektra debut from Judy Henske – an enigmatic 60s figure with a style that lie somewhere between jazz, blues, and folk! Given the mix, Henske was a perfect fit for the early sound of Elektra Records – who give her plenty of freedom here to really do her thing – not just singing, but also speaking in between songs, as part of the live setting of the record – with an approach that really hints at the pre-hippie qualities of her scene! Some of the dialogue is quite frank, very down to earth – and provides a wonderful contrast to the tighter, sharper approach of her vocals – especially when they're set up with jazzy backings from Onzy Matthews. Other tunes features a smaller group – with John Forsha on guitar, Jimmy Bond on bass, and John Ewing on trombone – on titles that include "Hooka Tooka", "Ballad Of Little Romy", "Low Down Alligator", "Salvation Army Song", "Love Henry", and "Lilly Langtree". High Flying Bird features ultra-cool work from Judy Henske – a singer who's not quite folk, not quite jazz, and whose groundbreaking style here provides a strong platform for styles and generations to come! At this point, Judy's almost in territory that's like the Jim Kweskin/Maria Muldaur side of the universe – a very conscious blend of roots and blues, jazz and folk – but with a style that's even hipper than that other pair, and this edge that shows that Judy, at least, is really ready for the flower power generation to happen – and is trying to do her best here with using an earlier aesthetic to get things going. Backing is by a small group with Jack Marshall on guitar and John Forsha on twelve-string guitar – on titles that include "Charlotte Town", "Buckeye Jim", "High Flying Bird", "Columbus Stockade", "Baltimore Oriole", "Lonely Train", and "God Bless The Child". ✨✧ Sandy NelsonBoogaloo Beat ... LP
Liberty, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $4.99
Groovy stuff from Sandy Nelson – one of his best albums ever! Despite the title, this isn't exactly the Latin soul adventure you might think – but it is a nice batch of drum-heavy instrumentals, with a good soul boogaloo beat to them. The best tracks are the ones with "boogaloo" in the title – like "Mystery Boogaloo", "Buckaroo Boogaloo", "Karate Boogaloo", and a cover of Lou Donaldson's "Alligator Boogaloo". VariousCriminale Vol 4 – Violenza (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... $16.99
An Italian Sound Library compilation series so full of gritty funk grooves, it's positively criminal! This might be the best volume in the series yet – really getting to the nitty gritty of the European soundtrack funk style of the end of the 60s and most of the 70s – some so minimally propulsive that they're stripped to just blazing psych-steeped electric guitar or funky drums and bass rhythms, while others are more fully fleshed out blasts of small combo jazz funk. The fourth volume in this impressive series includes some previously unreleased bits, and 18 tracks in all: "Contestation" by Daniela Casa, "Baterasso" by Remigio Ducros, "Lupin", "by Piero Montanari, "Diatomea" by Stelio Subell, "Tertz Blues" by Joel VDB, "Alligator Terror" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Tea Room" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Canottaggio" by Remigio Ducros, "Afrotheme" by Paolo Ferrara and more. ✨✧ Chris DarrowArtist Proof ... LP
Fantasy, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A should-be Cali country rock classic by Chris Darrow – and a real rare gem of a record we'd put right up there with the best of its kind! Multi-instrumentalist Darrow might be best known to psych enthusiasts – as he was a founding member of Kaleidoscope – but as a session player, he's worked with an eclectic roster of major players that includes Frank Zappa, Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, Sly Stone, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others. His solo work is akin to some other great, but better-known Cali country rockers, and honestly, we'd rate this record up against the aforementioned Mr. Parsons – it's really that good – but with more eclectic instrumentation. Catchy songs that are well sung and expertly-crafted – with Chris playing guitars, mandolin, dobro, fiddle and just about anything else with strings on it – and some light percussion, too! Other players include Ed Black, Loren Newkirk, Arnie Moore and Mickey McGhee – plus a sweet group of backing vocalists that includes Jennifer Warren. Titles include "Beware Of Time", "Lovers Of Sleep Abed Tonight", "Shawnee Moon", "Move On Down The Line", "Song For Steven", "Cocaine Lil", "Alligator Man", "Keep On Trying", "New Zoot", "The Show Must Go On", "The Sky Is Not Blue Today" and "We Can Both Learn To Say I Love You". ✨✧ Adam O'FarrillStranger Days ... CD
Sunnyside, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Adam O'Farrill's debut as a leader, and it's a strong one! Adam is the son of Cuban jazz piano great Arturo O'Farrill, but on Stranger Days, he's pretty firmly establishing his own identity in contemporary post-bop – keeping up the family tradition as a top notch player, rather than following the same stylistic path – not on this excellent debut for Sunnyside, anyway. Players include his brother Zack O'Farrill on drums, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown on sax, and Walter Stinson on bass. Titles include "A & R ITalian Eatery", Survival Instincts", Forget Everything You Learned At School", "The Courtroom", "Alligator Got The Blues", "Building The Metamorphosen Bridge", "Lower Brooklyn Botanical Union" and more. Great stuff! CD

Otis RushMourning In The Morning (French pressing) ... LP
Atlantic (France), 1969. Sealed ... $29.99
A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer" – the last 4 of which were written by Bloomfield and Gravenites. LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed 70s French pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)
