✨✧ Lou DonaldsonAlligator Bogaloo ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty stereo pressing.)

Dizzy GillespieReal Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

Judy HenskeJudy Henske – The Elektra Albums (Judy Henske/High Flying Bird) ... CD
Elektra/Ace (UK), 1963/1964. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A great two-fer – a pair of albums from the very cool Judy Henske – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Elektra debut from Judy Henske – an enigmatic 60s figure with a style that lie somewhere between jazz, blues, and folk! Given the mix, Henske was a perfect fit for the early sound of Elektra Records – who give her plenty of freedom here to really do her thing – not just singing, but also speaking in between songs, as part of the live setting of the record – with an approach that really hints at the pre-hippie qualities of her scene! Some of the dialogue is quite frank, very down to earth – and provides a wonderful contrast to the tighter, sharper approach of her vocals – especially when they're set up with jazzy backings from Onzy Matthews. Other tunes features a smaller group – with John Forsha on guitar, Jimmy Bond on bass, and John Ewing on trombone – on titles that include "Hooka Tooka", "Ballad Of Little Romy", "Low Down Alligator", "Salvation Army Song", "Love Henry", and "Lilly Langtree". High Flying Bird features ultra-cool work from Judy Henske – a singer who's not quite folk, not quite jazz, and whose groundbreaking style here provides a strong platform for styles and generations to come! At this point, Judy's almost in territory that's like the Jim Kweskin/Maria Muldaur side of the universe – a very conscious blend of roots and blues, jazz and folk – but with a style that's even hipper than that other pair, and this edge that shows that Judy, at least, is really ready for the flower power generation to happen – and is trying to do her best here with using an earlier aesthetic to get things going. Backing is by a small group with Jack Marshall on guitar and John Forsha on twelve-string guitar – on titles that include "Charlotte Town", "Buckeye Jim", "High Flying Bird", "Columbus Stockade", "Baltimore Oriole", "Lonely Train", and "God Bless The Child". Sandy NelsonBoogaloo Beat ... LP
Liberty, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $4.99
Groovy stuff from Sandy Nelson – one of his best albums ever! Despite the title, this isn't exactly the Latin soul adventure you might think – but it is a nice batch of drum-heavy instrumentals, with a good soul boogaloo beat to them. The best tracks are the ones with "boogaloo" in the title – like "Mystery Boogaloo", "Buckaroo Boogaloo", "Karate Boogaloo", and a cover of Lou Donaldson's "Alligator Boogaloo". ✨✧ Mike VickersDracula AD 1972 ... CD
BSX, 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool soundtrack to this very cool Dracula film – one of the oddest in the Hammer Horror series, as it very firmly has the Count working in the wild world of 1972! There's a sexy vibe to the movie – as you might guess from the title – and that's definitely echoed in some of the soundtrack by the great Brit arranger Mike Vickers, who cut his teeth in the early days of Manfred Mann, and was moving onto some great larger projects by this time! Some numbers have a groovy approach that fits the time period, others are more standard orchestrations – but still always handled with all those great elements we love from Vickers. Titles include "Van Helsing Heads To The Club", "Devil's Circle Music", "Baptism By Blood", "Dracula Returns/Dracula Bites Laura", "Johnny Be Really Dead", and "Prologue/Hyde Park 1872". CD features bonus tracks "Alligator Man" and "You Better Come Through For Me" – both rock songs performed by Stoneground! CD

✨✧ Luther AllisonLuther's Blues ... LP
Gordy, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the only blues records you'll ever find on Motown – and a mostly straight blues affair with a hard electric sound to it. The album's mostly in the early Alligator Records camp – but there's a few nice funky cuts, like "Now You Got It" and "Into My Life", which both have strong rhythm backing, and a smoother groove that kind of cuts the blues quotient a bit. That's a good thing for us, in case you couldn't tell! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear.)

✨✧ VariousCriminale Vol 4 – Violenza (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An Italian Sound Library compilation series so full of gritty funk grooves, it's positively criminal! This might be the best volume in the series yet – really getting to the nitty gritty of the European soundtrack funk style of the end of the 60s and most of the 70s – some so minimally propulsive that they're stripped to just blazing psych-steeped electric guitar or funky drums and bass rhythms, while others are more fully fleshed out blasts of small combo jazz funk. The fourth volume in this impressive series includes some previously unreleased bits, and 18 tracks in all: "Contestation" by Daniela Casa, "Baterasso" by Remigio Ducros, "Lupin", "by Piero Montanari, "Diatomea" by Stelio Subell, "Tertz Blues" by Joel VDB, "Alligator Terror" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Tea Room" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Canottaggio" by Remigio Ducros, "Afrotheme" by Paolo Ferrara and more. Otis RushMourning In The Morning (French pressing) ... LP
Atlantic (France), 1969. Sealed ... $19.99
A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer" – the last 4 of which were written by Bloomfield and Gravenites. LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed 70s French pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)
