Stelvio CiprianiIl Fiume Del Grande Caimano (The Great Alligator) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $19.99
Stelvio Cipriani wins us all over again with his genius-level approach to film music – and his ever-constant way of bringing totally great sounds to movies that might otherwise have only the lowest level of scoring! This movie is a great illustration of that genius at work – as Cipriani draws on all the best mellow modes of his early 70s classics – including that ear for a slow-stepping groove and isolated piano or keyboard line – mixed with a few more upbeat moments that reflect the disco trends of the time, but never in a way that's as cheesy or throwaway as some of his contemporaries! There's a surprising amount of care to the music throughout – and if you dig Stelvio's slinky erotic sounds as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love here – especially since the excellent CD reissue adds in 12 more bonus tracks, a number of which were never issued before. Titles include "Alligator Fear", "Alligator Touch", "Soft Love Theme", "Underwater Fear", "Rites Percussion #1", "Alligator Waltz", and "Water Party". CD

VariousFlorida Funk – Funk 45s From The Alligator State – 21 Rare & Unreleased Cuts (UK pressing) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
There's a whole lot more going down in Florida than alligators and Disney World – as you'll hear on this amazing little set! The package follows brilliantly in the tradition of Jazzman's Texas and Midwest Funk compilations – and like those collections, this one uncovers an incredible amount of under-heard music from an especially unlikely source! Florida is usually best remembered as the home of TK disco in the 70s, or contemporary club in more recent years – but back in the late 60s and early 70s, the state was a hotbed of indie funk activity – with loads of artists who were every bit as great as bigger names from points north, all working in an underground network of clubs, studios, and labels. The Jazzman team of Gerald Short and Malcolm Catto have really outdone themselves here – providing not only almost two dozen great funky tracks, but also a wealth of notes and information on each track – all served up in one really beautiful little package! The CD features a whopping 24 pages of notes and pictures all in color – with titles that include "Quit Jive'in" by Pearly Queen, "Cutting Room (Hot Pants)" by Oceanliners, "Super Cool" by Carrie Riley & The Fascinations, "Pure Funk (part 2)" by Delrays, "Do Right Man" by Sam Baker, "All The Time" by Bobby Williams & His Mar Kings, "Butterfly Theme" by Blowfly, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "Funky Fast Bump" by The Outlaw Gang, "Na Na" by Coke, "Get Down" by The Montereys, "90% Of Me Is You" by Vanessa Kendrick, "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma, "Baby Don't Cry" by Third Guitar, "Spider Web" by Weston Prim & Backlash, "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, "Save Me" by James Knight & The Butlers, and "It's Gonna Be A Mess (part 2)" by The Mighty Dogcatchers. Dizzy GillespieMatrix – The Perception Sessions (The Real Thing/Portrait Of Jenny/Giants) ... CD
Perception/Castle (UK), 1970/1971. Used 2CD ... $6.99
Excellent funk from Dizzy Gillespie – featuring all 3 of his albums for the legendary Perception label! The Real Thing is an amazing mix of funky jazz, cool rhythms, and some nice Latin-tinged grooves – and it's a stunning representation of the way that Dizzy kept on growing as a musician, long after his bebop years were over. James Moody sits in with some very funky tenor, and Mike Longo is on piano. Tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator" – all short, hard, and funky! Next up is Portrait Of Jenny, which has a cool electric feel that you don't really associate with Diz. The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga" and "Diddy Wa Diddy". The last set is Giants – a live recording that features Dizzy with Mary Lou Williams and Bobby Hackett, in a pretty mellow, pretty straight setting that shows that Diz could still play straight jazz when he wanted to. Titles include "Love For Sale", "Caravan", "My Man", and "Birks Works". 2 CDs, with 21 tracks in all! CD

Adam O'FarrillStranger Days ... CD
Sunnyside, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Trumpeter Adam O'Farrill's debut as a leader, and it's a strong one! Adam is the son of Cuban jazz piano great Arturo O'Farrill, but on Stranger Days, he's pretty firmly establishing his own identity in contemporary post-bop – keeping up the family tradition as a top notch player, rather than following the same stylistic path – not on this excellent debut for Sunnyside, anyway. Players include his brother Zack O'Farrill on drums, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown on sax, and Walter Stinson on bass. Titles include "A & R ITalian Eatery", Survival Instincts", Forget Everything You Learned At School", "The Courtroom", "Alligator Got The Blues", "Building The Metamorphosen Bridge", "Lower Brooklyn Botanical Union" and more. Great stuff! CD

VariousLeiber & Stoller Story Vol 2 – On The Horizon 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Perhaps the greatest years of genius for the team of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller – all summed up perfectly in a package that spans their work for many labels in many styles! Included here are some of the pair's best R&B work from the late 50s – hard groovers, catchy pop numbers, and a few mini-symphonies that really pushed the vocal talents of some key groups! Also included are some great early soul numbers, a few surprising crossover tracks, and a few titles that we'd heard before, but never realized were handled by Leiber & Stoller! Package features 24 tracks in all – with really wonderful notes that tie together all these bits, and further illuminate the material. Titles include "Here Comes Henry" by Young Jessie, "One Kiss Led To Another" by The Coasters, "There Goes My Baby" by The Drifters, "Yes" by Jay & The Americans, "Stand By Me" by Cassius Clay, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Searchin" by Alvin Robinson, "Lips" by Roy Hamilton, "Smokey Joe's Cafe" by Buddy Holly, "Alligator Wine" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Old Fashioned" by Varetta Dillard & The Cookies, "Lucky Lips" by Ruth Brown, "Keep Tellin Yourself" by Marv Johnson, "Some Other Guy" by Richie Barrett, "An Open Fire" by Johnny Mathis, and "I'm A Woman" by Christine Kittrell. ✨✧ VariousCriminale Vol 4 – Violenza (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An Italian Sound Library compilation series so full of gritty funk grooves, it's positively criminal! This might be the best volume in the series yet – really getting to the nitty gritty of the European soundtrack funk style of the end of the 60s and most of the 70s – some so minimally propulsive that they're stripped to just blazing psych-steeped electric guitar or funky drums and bass rhythms, while others are more fully fleshed out blasts of small combo jazz funk. The fourth volume in this impressive series includes some previously unreleased bits, and 18 tracks in all: "Contestation" by Daniela Casa, "Baterasso" by Remigio Ducros, "Lupin", "by Piero Montanari, "Diatomea" by Stelio Subell, "Tertz Blues" by Joel VDB, "Alligator Terror" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Tea Room" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Canottaggio" by Remigio Ducros, "Afrotheme" by Paolo Ferrara and more. ✨✧ Holy Modal RoundersGood Taste Is Timeless (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sundazed/Metromedia, 1971. Used Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from The Holy Modal Rounders – the group's fifth album, and a set that shows them moving into a slightly more subtle style than before – but still with plenty of their trademark touches intact! The work often has a sweetly folksy feel – one that conjures up the city-to-country modes of some of the Marin County bands of the time – with some sensitive lyrics and instrumentation, all produced beautifully down in Nashville by the legendary Bob Dorough – who was doing some surprising rock projects around this time. Despite the joke of the title, there actually is a timeless quality to this set – one that might almost make the record a good place to start if you've always been curious about the Rounders, but a bit intimidated by the fame of their earlier classics. Titles include "Black Bottom", "Spring OF 65", "Boobs A Lot", "Alligator Man", "City Blues", "The Whole World Oughta Go On Vacation", and "Melinda". LP, Vinyl record album

CerroneCerrone 3 – Supernature ... CD
Malligator/Hot, 1977. Used ... $6.99
The height of French disco – a huge worldwide hit for Cerrone, a nutty bit of space disco that actually holds up pretty darn well over the years! The guy's not really a looker – and the strange "animal operation" cover almost makes this look like a prog rock album – which is where Cerrone probably got his inspiration for the incredible keyboard work on the set – but the record's a killer bit of club that went onto influence generations to come – and is arguably one of Cerrone's best moments ever! Includes the classic "Supernature", a catchy disco groover you'll recognize instantly – plus the tracks "Love Is Here", "Love Is The Answer", and "Sweet Drums". CD

CerroneHysteria (French pressing) ... CD
Malligator/Universal (France), 2003. Used ... $11.99
New work from electro pioneer Cerrone – a huge influence on the French club scene back in the day, and still today! The album is actually surprisingly great – a wonderful blend of electronics and warmer disco grooves, done very much in the best spirit of Cerrone's late 70s and early 80s work, but also with traces of Bob Sinclar and some of the other current French artists that Cerrone influenced. The album's got some really great vocals on a number of tracks – spare, simple, and really going for the hook – and we're really surprised that we like this one so much, and that it's so free from any of the gimmicks or sloppy modern touches that might have ruined such a record. Titles include "Hysteria", "Gonan Get You", "The Only One", "Wake The Beach", "Love On The Dance Floor", "Back Home", and "Funky Lov". CD

CerroneLove In C Minor ... CD
Malligator/Unidisc (Canada), 1976. Used ... $5.99
The fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! The title track's got some nice keyboards by the great Alan Hawkshaw – who sounds even better on the album's cool disco version of "Black Is Black" and the tight snare-beat original, "Midnite Lady". Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Mid 70s-Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99
Some of the best material from Gambian psych funk pioneers Guelewar – a double-length collection, pulled from stellar albums of the late 70s and early 80s! Guelewar's got a really great sound here – one that brilliantly blends heavy, hypnotic rhythms, passionate vocals, swirling guitars and psychedelic organ grooves – all to create really unique vibe, and more than worthy of the legendary fame the group's gotten over the years! You might know Guelewar from their earlier work in the Supreme Eagles and Super Alligators – both great groups who prefaced the material here – infusing regional traditions with western funk, soul, and psych – to create a wicked groove that eventually evolved into the Guelewar sound! Titles include "Sama Yaya Demma N'Darr", "Sunu Makaan", "Ya Mom Samaray", "Njarama", "Tasito", "Wollou", and "Kele Fasane". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Otis RushMourning In The Morning ... CD
Atlantic, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer". Malligator/Because (France), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A return to soulful disco for Cerrone – recording here in New York, with some killer lead vocals by the great Jocelyn Brown! A few cuts still retain the Euro disco approach of earlier records, but a number of the album's best cuts are much more in the style of early 80s New York club tunes – sweet grooves with a nice degree of bass on the bottom, handled with that lean style that Cerrone helped pioneer in years before! The whole thing's really strong overall – with good vocals, tight keyboards, and a punched up sort of groove – and titles include "You Are The One", "Some One To Love", "Letter To My Mother", "Cherry Tree", and the piano-grooving "Hooked On You".
