✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiIl Fiume Del Grande Caimano (The Great Alligator) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stelvio Cipriani wins us all over again with his genius-level approach to film music – and his ever-constant way of bringing totally great sounds to movies that might otherwise have only the lowest level of scoring! This movie is a great illustration of that genius at work – as Cipriani draws on all the best mellow modes of his early 70s classics – including that ear for a slow-stepping groove and isolated piano or keyboard line – mixed with a few more upbeat moments that reflect the disco trends of the time, but never in a way that's as cheesy or throwaway as some of his contemporaries! There's a surprising amount of care to the music throughout – and if you dig Stelvio's slinky erotic sounds as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love here – especially since the excellent CD reissue adds in 12 more bonus tracks, a number of which were never issued before. Titles include "Alligator Fear", "Alligator Touch", "Soft Love Theme", "Underwater Fear", "Rites Percussion #1", "Alligator Waltz", and "Water Party". CD

✨✧ CameoAlligator Woman ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit creepy, but the album's still plenty great – old school Cameo still strongly in a funk-based mode, before some of the stiffer grooves of their later years! Bass is the ruler of the set – and most tracks here vamp around in a very heavy P-Funk style of groove – lots of guitar dancing around the rhythms, and plenty of spoken/sung vocals from the whole ensemble – not to mention a heavy dose of keyboards that helps keep things clean and lean! A partyful album if there ever was one – with tracks that include "Soul Army", "Enjoy Your Life", "Flirt", "Secrets Of Time", "I Owe It All To You", and "For You". CD

Toronzo CannonChicago Way ... CD
Alligator, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 17.98
A big step forward for Toronzo Cannon – one of the best contemporary blues players working the Chicago scene – moving from some previous records on Delmark to a bigger spot in the limelight on Alligator Records! The shift hasn't hurt Cannon's style at all – as the record still has this core sound that's very old school Chicago – with Toronzo on guitar and lead vocals, in a combo that also includes some nice Hammond B-3, and a bit of added horns on a few numbers. Most of the record is pretty stripped-down, although still very tight and electric – and titles include "Bad Contract", "The Pain Around Me", "Mrs From Mississippi", "Chickens Comin Home To Roost", and "Fine Seasoned Woman". Lou DonaldsonScorpion – Live At The Cadillac Club ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1970. Used ... $9.99
Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Paul Guma QuartetNow Sounds Over New Orleans ... LP
Top Of The Mart, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A sweet little album of funky jazz covers – recorded by the Paul Guma Quartet, a combo that played regularly at the Top Of The Mart restaurant in New Orleans during the 60s! Guma's on guitar, and the group's also got an organist who has a compressed Walter Wanderley kind of tone that keeps things nice and lean. Tracks are covers like "Hip Hugger", "Black Fox", "Viva Tirado", "Watermelon Man", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Aquarius" – all handled in a hiply swinging, loose-ended style that must have been nice when you were chilling out in the Mart's skyview bar on the 33rd floor! Screamin Jay HawkinsScreamin Jay Hawkins (10 inch LP) ... LP
Fontana/Be! (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A beautiful early European issue of material from the legendary Screamin Jay Hawkins – a special 10" record that was issued in France in the 50s, where it was clear that Screamin Jay was off to a mighty strong start! The set includes a number of Hawkins' excellent, offbeat tunes from his 50s years – those mad tunes that are part R&B, part voodoo, and part madman – served up in that unique style that nobody else could match! Titles include the classic "I Put A Spell On You", plus "You Made Me Love You", "Alligator Wine", "Little Demon", "Hong Kong", "Frenzy", "Person To Person", "There's Something Wrong With You", and "Take Me Back To My Boots & Saddle". VariousLeiber & Stoller Story Vol 2 – On The Horizon 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... On August 1, 2016
Perhaps the greatest years of genius for the team of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller – all summed up perfectly in a package that spans their work for many labels in many styles! Included here are some of the pair's best R&B work from the late 50s – hard groovers, catchy pop numbers, and a few mini-symphonies that really pushed the vocal talents of some key groups! Also included are some great early soul numbers, a few surprising crossover tracks, and a few titles that we'd heard before, but never realized were handled by Leiber & Stoller! Package features 24 tracks in all – with really wonderful notes that tie together all these bits, and further illuminate the material. Titles include "Here Comes Henry" by Young Jessie, "One Kiss Led To Another" by The Coasters, "There Goes My Baby" by The Drifters, "Yes" by Jay & The Americans, "Stand By Me" by Cassius Clay, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Searchin" by Alvin Robinson, "Lips" by Roy Hamilton, "Smokey Joe's Cafe" by Buddy Holly, "Alligator Wine" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Old Fashioned" by Varetta Dillard & The Cookies, "Lucky Lips" by Ruth Brown, "Keep Tellin Yourself" by Marv Johnson, "Some Other Guy" by Richie Barrett, "An Open Fire" by Johnny Mathis, and "I'm A Woman" by Christine Kittrell. ✨✧ Sandy NelsonBoogaloo Beat ... LP
Liberty, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovy stuff from Sandy Nelson – one of his best albums ever! Despite the title, this isn't exactly the Latin soul adventure you might think – but it is a nice batch of drum-heavy instrumentals, with a good soul boogaloo beat to them. The best tracks are the ones with "boogaloo" in the title – like "Mystery Boogaloo", "Buckaroo Boogaloo", "Karate Boogaloo", and a cover of Lou Donaldson's "Alligator Boogaloo". ✨✧ VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieReal Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

CerroneCerrone's Paradise ... CD
Malligator/Unidisc (Canada), 1977. Used ... $9.99
Cerrone's second album – a swirling mix of disco beats and strings that follows very clearly on the spirit of his landmark first one! Like that album, this one's got a title track that runs well over 15 minutes long – building in a slowly dancing way that says everything about European disco styles that one track could ever hope to do! Other tunes on the album are shorter and tighter – with soulful vocals dancing in and out, and some nice keyboard work that makes the tunes sparkle with a sweet electric groove. Titles include "Take Me", "Time For Love", and "Cerrone's Paradise". CD

CerroneLove In C Minor ... CD
Malligator/Because (France), 1976. New Copy ... $12.99
The fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! The title track's got some nice keyboards by the great Alan Hawkshaw – who sounds even better on the album's cool disco version of "Black Is Black" and the tight snare-beat original, "Midnite Lady". Cerrone featuring Jocelyn BrownCerrone VII – You Are The One ... CD
Malligator/Because (France), 1980. New Copy ... $12.99
A return to soulful disco for Cerrone – recording here in New York, with some killer lead vocals by the great Jocelyn Brown! A few cuts still retain the Euro disco approach of earlier records, but a number of the album's best cuts are much more in the style of early 80s New York club tunes – sweet grooves with a nice degree of bass on the bottom, handled with that lean style that Cerrone helped pioneer in years before! The whole thing's really strong overall – with good vocals, tight keyboards, and a punched up sort of groove – and titles include "You Are The One", "Some One To Love", "Letter To My Mother", "Cherry Tree", and the piano-grooving "Hooked On You". Malligator/Because (France), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The height of French disco – a huge worldwide hit for Cerrone, a nutty bit of space disco that actually holds up pretty darn well over the years! The guy's not really a looker – and the strange "animal operation" cover almost makes this look like a prog rock album – which is where Cerrone probably got his inspiration for the incredible keyboard work on the set – but the record's a killer bit of club that went onto influence generations to come – and is arguably one of Cerrone's best moments ever! Includes the classic "Supernature", a catchy disco groover you'll recognize instantly – plus the tracks "Love Is Here", "Love Is The Answer", and "Sweet Drums". CD
