Lou DonaldsonAlligator Bogaloo ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... $14.99
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder". ✨✧ CameoAlligator Woman ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit creepy, but the album's still plenty great – old school Cameo still strongly in a funk-based mode, before some of the stiffer grooves of their later years! Bass is the ruler of the set – and most tracks here vamp around in a very heavy P-Funk style of groove – lots of guitar dancing around the rhythms, and plenty of spoken/sung vocals from the whole ensemble – not to mention a heavy dose of keyboards that helps keep things clean and lean! A partyful album if there ever was one – with tracks that include "Soul Army", "Enjoy Your Life", "Flirt", "Secrets Of Time", "I Owe It All To You", and "For You". CD

✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiIl Fiume Del Grande Caimano (The Great Alligator) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stelvio Cipriani wins us all over again with his genius-level approach to film music – and his ever-constant way of bringing totally great sounds to movies that might otherwise have only the lowest level of scoring! This movie is a great illustration of that genius at work – as Cipriani draws on all the best mellow modes of his early 70s classics – including that ear for a slow-stepping groove and isolated piano or keyboard line – mixed with a few more upbeat moments that reflect the disco trends of the time, but never in a way that's as cheesy or throwaway as some of his contemporaries! There's a surprising amount of care to the music throughout – and if you dig Stelvio's slinky erotic sounds as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love here – especially since the excellent CD reissue adds in 12 more bonus tracks, a number of which were never issued before. Titles include "Alligator Fear", "Alligator Touch", "Soft Love Theme", "Underwater Fear", "Rites Percussion #1", "Alligator Waltz", and "Water Party". CD

✨✧ VariousDoors Of Perception – Dope Funk, Psychedelic Soul, & Acid Jazz From New York City 1970-74 ... CD
Sanctuary, Early 70s. Used ... $12.99
An excellent dip into the wild catalog of Perception Records! The label was home to some of the most compelling soul and funk of the early 70s – and it operated in a boundary-less territory that mixed up fuzzy guitars with heavy beats with soaring sax and sweet harmony vocals. Some of the artists who recorded for the label are best known for their work there – like Black Ivory or Wanda Robinson – and others made rare sessions for Perception – like Dizzy Gillespie and Shirley Horn – that really stand out from the rest of their work! This 20 track set offers a perfect sampling of the work on the label – and it includes a wild variety of tracks like "Alive" by Larry Young, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The 8 Minutes, "Consequences Of A Drug Addict Role" by Shirley Horn, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Life Love & Peace" by The Exciters, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "Stop Me" by Benny Johnson, and the main theme to "Brother On The Run" by Johnny Pate & Adam Wade! ✨✧ VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieReal Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

CerroneCerrone's Paradise (white vinyl pressing with bonus CD) ... LP
Malligator/Because (France), 1977. New Copy LP & CD (reissue)... $18.99
Cerrone's second album – a swirling mix of disco beats and strings that follows very clearly on the spirit of his landmark first one! Like that album, this one's got a title track that runs well over 15 minutes long – building in a slowly dancing way that says everything about European disco styles that one track could ever hope to do! Other tunes on the album are shorter and tighter – with soulful vocals dancing in and out, and some nice keyboard work that makes the tunes sparkle with a sweet electric groove. Malligator/Because (France), 1976. New Copy LP & CD (reissue)... $18.99
The fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! The title track's got some nice keyboards by the great Alan Hawkshaw – who sounds even better on the album's cool disco version of "Black Is Black" and the tight snare-beat original, "Midnite Lady". A wonderful package – a very limited set that includes the first three albums from Cerrone, with bonus CD versions as well! First up is Love In C Minor – the fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Titles include "Take Me", "Time For Love", and "Cerrone's Paradise". Supernature is the height of French disco – a huge worldwide hit for Cerrone, a nutty bit of space disco that actually holds up pretty darn well over the years! The guy's not really a looker – and the strange "animal operation" cover almost makes this look like a prog rock album – which is where Cerrone probably got his inspiration for the incredible keyboard work on the set – but the record's a killer bit of club that went onto influence generations to come – and is arguably one of Cerrone's best moments ever! Includes the classic "Supernature", a catchy disco groover you'll recognize instantly – plus the tracks "Love Is Here", "Love Is The Answer", and "Sweet Drums". LP, Vinyl record album

Roky EricksonEvil One (Plus One) ... CD
Sympathy For The Record Industry, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Roky Erickson's fantastic early 80s solo material – tracks that were produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival's Stu Cook – with some of the most straight-forward and accessible rockers in Roky's canon, but it's still sporting his trademark eccentricity! Given his mythical personal history, you can easy describe Roky Erickson as "having demons" – but as you'll hear, he's also got two-headed dogs, vampires, zombies, fire demons, ghosts and Lucifer himself – just on this one record! The tracks have an odd release history – having been recorded in the late 70s, but not released until 1980 in the UK on the Five Symbols record, and in '81 as The Evil One LP, with an altered tracklist. This definitive Light In The Attic version gathers up all 15 amazing tracks from the Stu Cook sessions from '77-'79. Includes the legendary "Two Headed Dog" and many more tunes that are just as incredible! Titles include "I Walked With A Zombie", "Night Of The Vampire", "It's A Cold Night For Alligators", "Mine Mine Mind", "I Think Of Demons", "Creature With The Atom Brain", "Bloody Hammer", "Don't Shake Me Lucifer", "If You Have Ghosts" and more. Cerrone's definitely got the Golden Touch here – grooving long and strong, with that mix of cosmic club and warmer disco that made his 70s music so great! The album's a masterpiece all the way through – driven by great percussion from the maestro, and swirled up into a heavenly mix at the legendary Trident studios – with some mighty sweet keyboards that really make the whole thing sparkle! There's a nice undercurrent of fuzz at points, too – hinting at French club to come – and the whole thing's a wonderful standard-setting record that really earns all the accolades it's gotten over the years. Titles include the long funky version of "Rocket In The Pocket" – plus "Je Suis Music", "Look For Love", and "Music Of Life". Great new reissue, too – with excellent notes and packaging! CD

Malligator/Atlantic, 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cerrone's going for a bit more of a rock-like sound here – stepping up the guitars in the mix, recording in LA, and including some distinct lead vocals that travel in more hook-heavy territory. There's still some nice smooth disco grooves on the set, touched here with some sweeter LA instrumentation and a bit of a sunny CA finish. Titles include "Call Me Tonight", "Living On Love", "Not Too Shabby", and "Rock Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Otis RushMourning In The Morning ... CD
Atlantic, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer". CD
