✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiIl Fiume Del Grande Caimano (The Great Alligator) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stelvio Cipriani wins us all over again with his genius-level approach to film music – and his ever-constant way of bringing totally great sounds to movies that might otherwise have only the lowest level of scoring! This movie is a great illustration of that genius at work – as Cipriani draws on all the best mellow modes of his early 70s classics – including that ear for a slow-stepping groove and isolated piano or keyboard line – mixed with a few more upbeat moments that reflect the disco trends of the time, but never in a way that's as cheesy or throwaway as some of his contemporaries! There's a surprising amount of care to the music throughout – and if you dig Stelvio's slinky erotic sounds as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love here – especially since the excellent CD reissue adds in 12 more bonus tracks, a number of which were never issued before. Titles include "Alligator Fear", "Alligator Touch", "Soft Love Theme", "Underwater Fear", "Rites Percussion #1", "Alligator Waltz", and "Water Party". CD

Dave FrishbergLookin' Good (Getting Some Fun Out Of Life/Let's Eat Home) ... CD
Concord, 1977/1990. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
Dave Frishberg's always getting some fun out of life – given the way he pens these witty little tunes, and sings them with a hell of a lot of charm! And this album's one to feature Frishberg at all his charming best – still with the jaunty, edgey qualities we love so much in Oaklahoma Toad, but turned back more towards more traditional jazz elements too – all set nicely into a small combo jazz mode, with help from Bob Findley on trumpet and Marshall Royal on alto – both horn players who give the album a fleshed-out feel that's a nice change from some of Dave's more piano/vocal-based records. A number of the tunes are instrumental – with Frishberg on piano – and titles include "Lotus Blossom", "Dear Bix", "Violet Blue", "Old Man Harlem", "Save It Pretty Mama", "Alligator Crawl", and "In A Mist". Holy Modal RoundersGood Taste Is Timeless (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sundazed/Metromedia, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold (reissue)... $16.99
An overlooked gem from The Holy Modal Rounders – the group's fifth album, and a set that shows them moving into a slightly more subtle style than before – but still with plenty of their trademark touches intact! The work often has a sweetly folksy feel – one that conjures up the city-to-country modes of some of the Marin County bands of the time – with some sensitive lyrics and instrumentation, all produced beautifully down in Nashville by the legendary Bob Dorough – who was doing some surprising rock projects around this time. Despite the joke of the title, there actually is a timeless quality to this set – one that might almost make the record a good place to start if you've always been curious about the Rounders, but a bit intimidated by the fame of their earlier classics. Titles include "Black Bottom", "Spring OF 65", "Boobs A Lot", "Alligator Man", "City Blues", "The Whole World Oughta Go On Vacation", and "Melinda". LP, Vinyl record album

Adam O'FarrillStranger Days ... CD
Sunnyside, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Trumpeter Adam O'Farrill's debut as a leader, and it's a strong one! Adam is the son of Cuban jazz piano great Arturo O'Farrill, but on Stranger Days, he's pretty firmly establishing his own identity in contemporary post-bop – keeping up the family tradition as a top notch player, rather than following the same stylistic path – not on this excellent debut for Sunnyside, anyway. Players include his brother Zack O'Farrill on drums, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown on sax, and Walter Stinson on bass. Titles include "A & R ITalian Eatery", Survival Instincts", Forget Everything You Learned At School", "The Courtroom", "Alligator Got The Blues", "Building The Metamorphosen Bridge", "Lower Brooklyn Botanical Union" and more. Great stuff! CD

VariousCriminale Vol 4 – Violenza (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... $22.99
An Italian Sound Library compilation series so full of gritty funk grooves, it's positively criminal! This might be the best volume in the series yet – really getting to the nitty gritty of the European soundtrack funk style of the end of the 60s and most of the 70s – some so minimally propulsive that they're stripped to just blazing psych-steeped electric guitar or funky drums and bass rhythms, while others are more fully fleshed out blasts of small combo jazz funk. The fourth volume in this impressive series includes some previously unreleased bits, and 18 tracks in all: "Contestation" by Daniela Casa, "Baterasso" by Remigio Ducros, "Lupin", "by Piero Montanari, "Diatomea" by Stelio Subell, "Tertz Blues" by Joel VDB, "Alligator Terror" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Tea Room" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Canottaggio" by Remigio Ducros, "Afrotheme" by Paolo Ferrara and more. VariousLeiber & Stoller Story Vol 2 – On The Horizon 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Perhaps the greatest years of genius for the team of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller – all summed up perfectly in a package that spans their work for many labels in many styles! Included here are some of the pair's best R&B work from the late 50s – hard groovers, catchy pop numbers, and a few mini-symphonies that really pushed the vocal talents of some key groups! Also included are some great early soul numbers, a few surprising crossover tracks, and a few titles that we'd heard before, but never realized were handled by Leiber & Stoller! Package features 24 tracks in all – with really wonderful notes that tie together all these bits, and further illuminate the material. Titles include "Here Comes Henry" by Young Jessie, "One Kiss Led To Another" by The Coasters, "There Goes My Baby" by The Drifters, "Yes" by Jay & The Americans, "Stand By Me" by Cassius Clay, "Bossa Nova Baby" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Searchin" by Alvin Robinson, "Lips" by Roy Hamilton, "Smokey Joe's Cafe" by Buddy Holly, "Alligator Wine" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, "Old Fashioned" by Varetta Dillard & The Cookies, "Lucky Lips" by Ruth Brown, "Keep Tellin Yourself" by Marv Johnson, "Some Other Guy" by Richie Barrett, "An Open Fire" by Johnny Mathis, and "I'm A Woman" by Christine Kittrell. ✨✧ Lou DonaldsonScorpion – Live At The Cadillac Club ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Fontana/Be! (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautiful early European issue of material from the legendary Screamin Jay Hawkins – a special 10" record that was issued in France in the 50s, where it was clear that Screamin Jay was off to a mighty strong start! The set includes a number of Hawkins' excellent, offbeat tunes from his 50s years – those mad tunes that are part R&B, part voodoo, and part madman – served up in that unique style that nobody else could match! Titles include the classic "I Put A Spell On You", plus "You Made Me Love You", "Alligator Wine", "Little Demon", "Hong Kong", "Frenzy", "Person To Person", "There's Something Wrong With You", and "Take Me Back To My Boots & Saddle". CerroneCerrone IX – Your Love Survived ... LP
Malligator (France), 1982. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
Cerrone's hitting a real 80s groove here – going for those keyboard lines that kind of go "wheeet", layed out over some heavily processed drums, all coming together in production styles that are perhaps a bit colder than on previous albums. There's actually some nice jazzy riffing in some of the instrumentation – in a similar style that was being used on keyboards by American 80s groove acts of the same time – with that electro funk approach that was pretty darn popular at the time. Titles include "Back To Champs Elysees", "Get Your Lovin", "Workout", "Your Love Survived", "California", and "Call Me Tonight". LP, Vinyl record album

Cerrone featuring Jocelyn BrownCerrone VII – You Are The One ... CD
Malligator/Because (France), 1980. New Copy ... $8.99
A return to soulful disco for Cerrone – recording here in New York, with some killer lead vocals by the great Jocelyn Brown! A few cuts still retain the Euro disco approach of earlier records, but a number of the album's best cuts are much more in the style of early 80s New York club tunes – sweet grooves with a nice degree of bass on the bottom, handled with that lean style that Cerrone helped pioneer in years before! The whole thing's really strong overall – with good vocals, tight keyboards, and a punched up sort of groove – and titles include "You Are The One", "Some One To Love", "Letter To My Mother", "Cherry Tree", and the piano-grooving "Hooked On You". ✨✧ CerroneLove In C Minor ... CD
Malligator/Because (France), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! The title track's got some nice keyboards by the great Alan Hawkshaw – who sounds even better on the album's cool disco version of "Black Is Black" and the tight snare-beat original, "Midnite Lady".
