✨✧ CameoAlligator Woman ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99
The cover's a bit creepy, but the album's still plenty great – old school Cameo still strongly in a funk-based mode, before some of the stiffer grooves of their later years! Bass is the ruler of the set – and most tracks here vamp around in a very heavy P-Funk style of groove – lots of guitar dancing around the rhythms, and plenty of spoken/sung vocals from the whole ensemble – not to mention a heavy dose of keyboards that helps keep things clean and lean! A partyful album if there ever was one – with tracks that include "Soul Army", "Enjoy Your Life", "Flirt", "Secrets Of Time", "I Owe It All To You", and "For You". CD

Stelvio CiprianiIl Fiume Del Grande Caimano (The Great Alligator) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $19.99
Stelvio Cipriani wins us all over again with his genius-level approach to film music – and his ever-constant way of bringing totally great sounds to movies that might otherwise have only the lowest level of scoring! This movie is a great illustration of that genius at work – as Cipriani draws on all the best mellow modes of his early 70s classics – including that ear for a slow-stepping groove and isolated piano or keyboard line – mixed with a few more upbeat moments that reflect the disco trends of the time, but never in a way that's as cheesy or throwaway as some of his contemporaries! There's a surprising amount of care to the music throughout – and if you dig Stelvio's slinky erotic sounds as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love here – especially since the excellent CD reissue adds in 12 more bonus tracks, a number of which were never issued before. Titles include "Alligator Fear", "Alligator Touch", "Soft Love Theme", "Underwater Fear", "Rites Percussion #1", "Alligator Waltz", and "Water Party". CD

✨✧ Lou DonaldsonAlligator Bogaloo ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty stereo pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Label has a tiny spot of pen, but whole thing is nice overall.)

✨✧ VariousCriminale Vol 4 – Violenza (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An Italian Sound Library compilation series so full of gritty funk grooves, it's positively criminal! This might be the best volume in the series yet – really getting to the nitty gritty of the European soundtrack funk style of the end of the 60s and most of the 70s – some so minimally propulsive that they're stripped to just blazing psych-steeped electric guitar or funky drums and bass rhythms, while others are more fully fleshed out blasts of small combo jazz funk. The fourth volume in this impressive series includes some previously unreleased bits, and 18 tracks in all: "Contestation" by Daniela Casa, "Baterasso" by Remigio Ducros, "Lupin", "by Piero Montanari, "Diatomea" by Stelio Subell, "Tertz Blues" by Joel VDB, "Alligator Terror" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Tea Room" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Canottaggio" by Remigio Ducros, "Afrotheme" by Paolo Ferrara and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(140 gram vinyl – with bonus CD.)

✨✧ VariousBest Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody. CerroneCerrone's Paradise (white vinyl pressing with bonus CD) ... LP
Malligator/Because (France), 1977. New Copy LP & CD (reissue)... $18.99
Cerrone's second album – a swirling mix of disco beats and strings that follows very clearly on the spirit of his landmark first one! Like that album, this one's got a title track that runs well over 15 minutes long – building in a slowly dancing way that says everything about European disco styles that one track could ever hope to do! Other tunes on the album are shorter and tighter – with soulful vocals dancing in and out, and some nice keyboard work that makes the tunes sparkle with a sweet electric groove. Titles include "Take Me", "Time For Love", and "Cerrone's Paradise". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CerroneCerrone IV – The Golden Touch ... CD
Malligator/Big Break (UK), 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cerrone's definitely got the Golden Touch here – grooving long and strong, with that mix of cosmic club and warmer disco that made his 70s music so great! The album's a masterpiece all the way through – driven by great percussion from the maestro, and swirled up into a heavenly mix at the legendary Trident studios – with some mighty sweet keyboards that really make the whole thing sparkle! There's a nice undercurrent of fuzz at points, too – hinting at French club to come – and the whole thing's a wonderful standard-setting record that really earns all the accolades it's gotten over the years. Titles include the long funky version of "Rocket In The Pocket" – plus "Je Suis Music", "Look For Love", and "Music Of Life". Great new reissue, too – with excellent notes and packaging! CD

✨✧ CerroneLove In C Minor (clear vinyl pressing with bonus CD) ... LP
Malligator/Because (France), 1976. New Copy LP & CD (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! The title track's got some nice keyboards by the great Alan Hawkshaw – who sounds even better on the album's cool disco version of "Black Is Black" and the tight snare-beat original, "Midnite Lady". LP, Vinyl record album
(LP comes with bonus CD version of the full album.)

Malligator/Because (France), 1976/1977. New Copy 3LP & 3CD (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful package – a very limited set that includes the first three albums from Cerrone, with bonus CD versions as well! First up is Love In C Minor – the fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! Titles include "Take Me", "Time For Love", and "Cerrone's Paradise". Supernature is the height of French disco – a huge worldwide hit for Cerrone, a nutty bit of space disco that actually holds up pretty darn well over the years! The guy's not really a looker – and the strange "animal operation" cover almost makes this look like a prog rock album – which is where Cerrone probably got his inspiration for the incredible keyboard work on the set – but the record's a killer bit of club that went onto influence generations to come – and is arguably one of Cerrone's best moments ever! Includes the classic "Supernature", a catchy disco groover you'll recognize instantly – plus the tracks "Love Is Here", "Love Is The Answer", and "Sweet Drums". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited, numbered edition of 1000 – pressed on colored vinyl.)
