✨✧ CameoAlligator Woman ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99
The cover's a bit creepy, but the album's still plenty great – old school Cameo still strongly in a funk-based mode, before some of the stiffer grooves of their later years! Bass is the ruler of the set – and most tracks here vamp around in a very heavy P-Funk style of groove – lots of guitar dancing around the rhythms, and plenty of spoken/sung vocals from the whole ensemble – not to mention a heavy dose of keyboards that helps keep things clean and lean! A partyful album if there ever was one – with tracks that include "Soul Army", "Enjoy Your Life", "Flirt", "Secrets Of Time", "I Owe It All To You", and "For You". CD

VariousFlorida Funk – Funk 45s From The Alligator State 1968 to 1975 (US pressing with bonus track) ... CD
Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
There's a whole lot more going down in Florida than alligators and Disney World – as you'll hear on this amazing little set! The package follows brilliantly in the tradition of Jazzman's Texas and Midwest Funk compilations – and like those collections, this one uncovers an incredible amount of under-heard music from an especially unlikely source! Florida is usually best remembered as the home of TK disco in the 70s, or contemporary club in more recent years – but back in the late 60s and early 70s, the state was a hotbed of indie funk activity – with loads of artists who were every bit as great as bigger names from points north, all working in an underground network of clubs, studios, and labels. The Jazzman team of Gerald Short and Malcolm Catto have really outdone themselves here – providing not only almost two dozen great funky tracks, but also a wealth of notes and information on each track – all served up in one really beautiful little package! The CD features a whopping 24 pages of notes and pictures all in color – with titles that include "Quit Jive'in" by Pearly Queen, "Cutting Room (Hot Pants)" by Oceanliners, "Super Cool" by Carrie Riley & The Fascinations, "Pure Funk (part 2)" by Delrays, "Do Right Man" by Sam Baker, "All The Time" by Bobby Williams & His Mar Kings, "Butterfly Theme" by Blowfly, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "Funky Fast Bump" by The Outlaw Gang, "Na Na" by Coke, "Get Down" by The Montereys, "90% Of Me Is You" by Vanessa Kendrick, "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma, "Baby Don't Cry" by Third Guitar, "Spider Web" by Weston Prim & Backlash, "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, "Save Me" by James Knight & The Butlers, and "It's Gonna Be A Mess (part 2)" by The Mighty Dogcatchers. US pressing features the bonus track "Soft Soul" by Lavell Kamma – and different cover art too! CD

✨✧ Lou DonaldsonAlligator Bogaloo ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder". Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky classic! "Alligator Boogaloo" is a longtime winner for Lou – and virtually the blueprint for the popular Idris Muhammad-driven drum breaks that would inspire a generation. "Rev Moses" is great, too – and has a rolling groove that's very nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ AlchemistRetarded Alligator Beats ... LP
ALC, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rewarding entry in Alchemists always worthwhile instrumental series – featuring a diverse, though distinctively Alchemist set of unreleased beats – and a guest vocal appearance from Action Bronson for good measure! All the material on Retarded Alligator Beats was put down by Alc in the summer of 2013, which was clearly a creatively fruitful period for the man, as this is top shelf stuff. Includes "Summer Madness", "Muscular Infant", "Bloodhounds", "Retarded Alligator", "Seven Minutes", "Holy Tabernacle", "Gigantic Clam", "Still Ill", "Napoleon" and more – plus "Voodoo" featuring Action Bronson". ✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiIl Fiume Del Grande Caimano (The Great Alligator) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stelvio Cipriani wins us all over again with his genius-level approach to film music – and his ever-constant way of bringing totally great sounds to movies that might otherwise have only the lowest level of scoring! This movie is a great illustration of that genius at work – as Cipriani draws on all the best mellow modes of his early 70s classics – including that ear for a slow-stepping groove and isolated piano or keyboard line – mixed with a few more upbeat moments that reflect the disco trends of the time, but never in a way that's as cheesy or throwaway as some of his contemporaries! There's a surprising amount of care to the music throughout – and if you dig Stelvio's slinky erotic sounds as much as we do, you'll find plenty to love here – especially since the excellent CD reissue adds in 12 more bonus tracks, a number of which were never issued before. Titles include "Alligator Fear", "Alligator Touch", "Soft Love Theme", "Underwater Fear", "Rites Percussion #1", "Alligator Waltz", and "Water Party". CD

Fenton RobinsonSomebody Loan Me A Dime ... CD
Alligator, 1974. Used ... $8.99
One of the better albums on the Alligator Records label from Chicago – a set by Fenton Robinson that's not far different from his earlier work on the 77/Sound Stage Seven label! There's a feel here that's pretty great – slightly southern in inflection, and not as Chicago-cliched as other Alligator work. Mighty Joe Young joins Fenton on rhythm guitar – and titles include "I've Changed", "Country Girl", "Gotta Wake Up", "Texas Flood", "Checking On My Woman", and "Somebody Loan Me A Dime". CD

Dizzy GillespieReal Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. Very Good+ ... $39.99
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCriminale Vol 4 – Violenza (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... $22.99
An Italian Sound Library compilation series so full of gritty funk grooves, it's positively criminal! This might be the best volume in the series yet – really getting to the nitty gritty of the European soundtrack funk style of the end of the 60s and most of the 70s – some so minimally propulsive that they're stripped to just blazing psych-steeped electric guitar or funky drums and bass rhythms, while others are more fully fleshed out blasts of small combo jazz funk. The fourth volume in this impressive series includes some previously unreleased bits, and 18 tracks in all: "Contestation" by Daniela Casa, "Baterasso" by Remigio Ducros, "Lupin", "by Piero Montanari, "Diatomea" by Stelio Subell, "Tertz Blues" by Joel VDB, "Alligator Terror" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Tea Room" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Canottaggio" by Remigio Ducros, "Afrotheme" by Paolo Ferrara and more. ✨✧ Dr JohnDr John's Gumbo ... LP
Atco, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A distinctly roots-oriented effort from Dr. John – and one in which he reprises a number of classic New Orleans R&B tracks, and gives them his unique funky twist. The record features versions of Sugarboy Crawford's "Iko Iko", Huey Smith's "Blow Wind Blow", and other classics like "Mess Around", "Let The Good Times Roll", "Junko Partner", "Tipitina", and "Stack A Lee". The band includes Melvin Lastie, Harold Battiste, Alvin Robinson, and other great southern funk players – and the album's got a nice gatefold cover! LP, Vinyl record album

CerroneLove In C Minor (clear vinyl pressing with bonus CD) ... LP
Malligator/Because (France), 1976. Sealed (reissue)... $16.99
The fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! The title track's got some nice keyboards by the great Alan Hawkshaw – who sounds even better on the album's cool disco version of "Black Is Black" and the tight snare-beat original, "Midnite Lady". GuelewarTouki Ba Banjul – Acid Trip From Banjul To Dakar ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $9.99
Some of the best material from Gambian psych funk pioneers Guelewar – a double-length collection, pulled from stellar albums of the late 70s and early 80s! Guelewar's got a really great sound here – one that brilliantly blends heavy, hypnotic rhythms, passionate vocals, swirling guitars and psychedelic organ grooves – all to create really unique vibe, and more than worthy of the legendary fame the group's gotten over the years! You might know Guelewar from their earlier work in the Supreme Eagles and Super Alligators – both great groups who prefaced the material here – infusing regional traditions with western funk, soul, and psych – to create a wicked groove that eventually evolved into the Guelewar sound! Titles include "Sama Yaya Demma N'Darr", "Sunu Makaan", "Ya Mom Samaray", "Njarama", "Tasito", "Wollou", and "Kele Fasane". CD

✨✧ CerroneCerrone IV – The Golden Touch ... CD
Malligator/Big Break (UK), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Cerrone's definitely got the Golden Touch here – grooving long and strong, with that mix of cosmic club and warmer disco that made his 70s music so great! The album's a masterpiece all the way through – driven by great percussion from the maestro, and swirled up into a heavenly mix at the legendary Trident studios – with some mighty sweet keyboards that really make the whole thing sparkle! There's a nice undercurrent of fuzz at points, too – hinting at French club to come – and the whole thing's a wonderful standard-setting record that really earns all the accolades it's gotten over the years. Titles include the long funky version of "Rocket In The Pocket" – plus "Je Suis Music", "Look For Love", and "Music Of Life". Great new reissue, too – with excellent notes and packaging! CD

Cerrone's second album – a swirling mix of disco beats and strings that follows very clearly on the spirit of his landmark first one! Like that album, this one's got a title track that runs well over 15 minutes long – building in a slowly dancing way that says everything about European disco styles that one track could ever hope to do! Other tunes on the album are shorter and tighter – with soulful vocals dancing in and out, and some nice keyboard work that makes the tunes sparkle with a sweet electric groove. Malligator/Because (France), 1976/1977. New Copy 3LP & 3CD (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful package – a very limited set that includes the first three albums from Cerrone, with bonus CD versions as well! First up is Love In C Minor – the fantastic first album by Cerrone – a landmark disco record that features the 16 minute long "Love In C Minor" – a swirling bit of strings, beats, and female voices – one of those tunes that forever went onto change the face of dance music in the 70s! Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! Titles include "Take Me", "Time For Love", and "Cerrone's Paradise". Supernature is the height of French disco – a huge worldwide hit for Cerrone, a nutty bit of space disco that actually holds up pretty darn well over the years! The guy's not really a looker – and the strange "animal operation" cover almost makes this look like a prog rock album – which is where Cerrone probably got his inspiration for the incredible keyboard work on the set – but the record's a killer bit of club that went onto influence generations to come – and is arguably one of Cerrone's best moments ever! Includes the classic "Supernature", a catchy disco groover you'll recognize instantly – plus the tracks "Love Is Here", "Love Is The Answer", and "Sweet Drums". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited, numbered edition of 1000 – pressed on colored vinyl.)
