Bobby Hamilton QuintetDream Queen ... LP
Alifa/Now Again, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 27.99
A lost bit of funky vibes and Fender Rhodes – one of those few records that's as sublime as it is rare – like work by Billy Wooten or Lyman Woodard! The Bobby Hamilton Quintet were an obscure combo from upstate New York – but they've lived on in our hearts (and ears!) with this rare gem from the 70s – a killer set that features Bobby on Rhodes, vocals, and percussion; Mike Gipson (aka Brother Fundi) on vibes, percussion, and electronics; and additional trumpet, tenor, and percussion – used to just the right effect in these totally great arrangements. Most of the tunes on the album are instrumentals – with a very cool, ultra-hip soul jazz approach that's somewhere between the very early Polydor work of Roy Ayers, and the funky electric grooves of the Nineteenth Whole – and the tracks are long, and have a really deep, soulful feel! Titles include "Pearl", "Priscilla", "In The Mouth Of The Beast", "Roll Your Own", and "Dream Queen". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dexter GordonSoy Califa – Live From Magleaas Hojskole 1967 (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An ultra-rare performance from Dexter Gordon – one at a high school in Denmark at the same time he was really beginning to take off at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen! The group here is similar to one that was working with Dex in the club – Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – a rollicking rhythm section that really takes off on the title track – a searing rendition of "Soy Califa", which is one of our favorite Dexter Gordon tunes from the Blue Note years. The set then slides into a laidback reading of "Shadow Of Your Smile", with Dex blowing soulfully and deep – and the record concludes with a tight boppish version of "Blues Up & Down", with lots of room for long tenor and piano solos! The playing is great, but we should say that the recording quality seems to have the bass more upfront than both the piano and tenor – so the mix is a bit unusual. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dexter GordonSwingin' Affair ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An amazingly simple – but amazingly satisfying session from Dexter Gordon! The group's a totally solid quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the groove is right in the pocket with a solid solid soulful feel that you don't always get on Gordon's other Blue Note albums! There's a simple elegance here that's really beautiful – Gordon at his post-bop best, but without any of the over-extended modes of his too-long solo years – a mix that's really rare, and carried off impeccably for this set. The record starts with the amazing "Soy Califa", a nice hardbop number with a good Latiny feel, then slides into lots of other nice ones like "McSplivens", "The Backbone", and "Don't Explain". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty pressing – in nice shape! Back cover has a small sticker in one corner, and front has very light wear – but overall, this is a superb copy.)
Also available Swingin' Affair (RVG remaster edition) ... CD 5.99

✨✧ ThundercatDrunk (4 x 10 inch LP set) ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2017. Near Mint- 4x10" Box Set ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from one of the most compelling mainstream talents in recent years – an artist who can get wide fame and acclaim, yet keep on pushing the boundaries into fresh new cosmic territory! This album may well be Thundercat's masterpiece – not just a summation of all the ideas and areas he's explored in the past, but also kind of a re-filtering of other modes as well – including the more spiritual and jazz-based territory that he's moved towards, especially when working with others! Yet there's nothing here that's an easy copy of another style, or another's work – as the whole thing bristles with a personal newness that's wonderful – even when Thundercat is getting help from guests who include Kamasai Washington, Flying Lotus, Wiz Khalifa, Pharrell, and Kendrick Lamarr – as well as some especially nice work from AOR legends Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. Titles include "I Am Crazy", "3AM", "Rabbot Ho", "Bus In These Streets", "Lava Lamp", "Jethro", "Show You The Way", "Drink Dat", "Jameel's Space Ride", and "Tokyo". LP, Vinyl record album
