Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Jackson In Your House (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
One of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago's all-time classics! If you've ever bought an Art Ensemble album and said "Hmm, what's all the fuss about?", get this one. It'll change your mind. The band is in perfect form – and hits an incredible blend of free thinking modernism and soulful soloing, peppered with a healthy dose of humor. The tracks are shortish, and very tight – and titles include "Jackson In Your House", "Song For Charles", "The Waltz", and "Get In Line". LP, Vinyl record album

Grachan Moncur IIIAco Dei De Madrugada (One Morning I Woke Up Very Early) ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Essential stuff – and one of a few albums recorded for BYG/Actual by trombonist Grachan Moncur III – some of his best work after his initial classics for Blue Note! The album features Moncur fronting a European rhythm section – performing one side of interpretations of Brazilian folk tunes: "Aco Dei De Madrugada" and "Ponte Lo"; and another of two originals: "Osmosis" and "Tiny Temper". Anyone familiar with Moncur's style can't help but appreciate his coloristic slides and slurs, or his marvelous textural splashes of tone, or his individual phrasing, shaped more by his unique vision than any standard trombone slide or valve brass tradition. While his wonderful Blue Note sides were very modernist, these BYG sessions find Moncur at his most expansive – more groundbreaking work from one of our favorite "new thing" artists! Sunny MurrayHommage To Africa (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
One of the more spiritual sessions for BYG, and a large ensemble session that brings together players like Archie Shepp, Malachi Favors, Roscoe Mitchell, Grachan Moncur, and Clifford Thornton. "Suns Of Africa" takes up all of side one, and although it begins slow, and with spare soloing, it moves into a slow rhythmic pulse that pulls along all players in a moving ensemble passge that sparkles with feeling and spirituality. Side 2 has two shorter pieces entitled "R.I.P.", which is more intense, and "Unity", which again moves into a mellower ensemble space. Certainly one of our favorite albums on BYG, and one that we find ourselves returning to more than others on the label! LP, Vinyl record album

Archie SheppBlase ... LP
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Maybe our favorite of the Archie Shepp albums for BYG/Actuel! These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the decade, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", and "My Angel". The group includes Jeanne Lee on vocals, plus Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Dave Burrell, and Philly Joe Jones – and the whole thing has that great Paris spiritual free jazz party feel to it! Archie Shepp & The Full Moon EnsembleLive In Antibes Vol 2 ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
A seminal live set from tenorist Archie Shepp – and some of his freest, least-structured material ever! Shepp's still a righteous force here on his horn, but there also seems to be equal emphasis on the contributions of all members of the group – woven together in a really rich tapestry of sound, but with less of the structuring righteous concepts of some of Archie's other work – especially his sides for Impulse. Shepp had really been experiencing some new freedoms on the French scene of the late 60s – even more so than in the US avant outfield – and you can definitely hear him taking flight here, with a like-minded group of players that includes Clifford Thornton on trombone and shenai, Alan Shorter on flugelhorn, Joseph Dujean on guitar, Beb Guerin on bass, and Claud Delcloo on drums. This second part features one long track, "Huru", split over two sides, and slowly building energy through a tangle of piano, drums, bass, and guitar – with tenor, flugelhorn, and trombone soloing over the top! Clifford ThorntonKetchaoua ... LP
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $16.99
An early gem from the great Clifford Thornton – maybe his best-known album over the years, thanks to its placement on the post-68 series of French free jazz releases on the BYG/Actuel label – but a set that's got a much more New York vibe overall, and stands as a key precursor to so many loft jazz recordings of the 70s! The style is very open and organic – not nearly as bombastic as some of the other Actuel sets of the period – with an earthy energy that really allows the players to come together naturally, collaboratively, and not combatively. The lineup of players shifts from track to track – again echoing some loftish modes – and the lineup includes Thornton on cornet and percussion, with Grachan Moncur on trombone, Archie Shepp on soprano sax, Arthur Jones on alto, Beb Guerin and Earl Freeman on bass, Sunny Murray on drums, and Dave Burrell on piano. Titles include "Pan African Festival", "Brotherhood", and "Ketchaoua" – plus "Speak With Your Echo", a cool track that has Clifford's cornet playing in a spare setting with only 2 basses! LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram reissue on Get Back.)

BYG/Actuel, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The 2nd volume of the Solar-Myth sessions! Recorded in New York in 1970, with an Arkestra that includes Kwame Hadi, Ali Hassan, Danny Davis, John Gilmore, and Clifford Jarvis – and instrumentation that includes moog, space dimension mellophone, ancient Egyptian Infinity drum, and lots of other weird percussion instruments. Longer titles are "The Utter Nots", "Scene 1, Take 1", and "Strange Worlds", and the whole thing's packaged in a glossy gatefold cover, with good photos of the band, and a good cover shot of Ra wearing cool goofy glasses! BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A the time they were taking Paris by storm, the Art Ensemble recorded this brilliant message to folks everywhere – one of their best early albums, and a landmark in Chicago avant garde jazz! The record features the group at their best – playing very tightly, but also with a sense of whimsy and imagination. Side two features the extended track "A Brain For The Seine", a real classic by the band – and side one features versions of "Dexterity" and "Old Time Religion", plus the Roscoe Mitchell composition "Rock Out". ✨✧ Don CherryMu Second Part ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles on this second part include "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". ✨✧ Sonny SharrockMonkey-Pockie-Boo (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wow! This is one of Sonny Sharrock's rare early recordings, recorded in France shortly after he had been playing with Herbie Mann. The groove's kind of crazy, and it's amazing that Sonny jumped out so soon after leaving the sort of pop-jazz environs he was in with Herbie – but hey, lots of players got to France in the 60s, and completely let their bag open up – so why not Sonny? Wife Linda's on vocals on the session, and they're backed up by Beb Guerin on bass and Jacques Thollot on drums. Titles include "27th Day", "Soon", and "Monkey Pockie Boo". LP, Vinyl record album

BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the best-ever BYG/Actuel sessions, and one that has the unlikely pairing of east coast avant players Sonny Murray and Byard Lancaster, with Art Ensemble Of Chicago bassist Malachi Favors! Murray plays drums, and reads a bit of poetry, while the band wails behind him in powerful turgid lines of hard free jazz that represent all there is to say about the freedom of the Paris jazz scene in 1969. 4 long tracks – "Invisible Blues", "Complete Affection", "Giblets – Part 12", and "An Even Break". ✨✧ Sunny MurraySunshine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums that Sunny Murray ever recorded – a set of large ideas and long explorations – performed here by a group of all-star avant players from the time! Murray's vision is wonderful here – even bolder and more expressive than on his work for ESP – and realized by a mighty lineup of players that includes Lester Bowie on trumpet, Arthur Jones and Roscoe Mitchell on alto saxes, Archie Shepp and Kenneth Terrode on tenors, Dave Burrell on piano, and Alan Silva and Malachi Favors on bass! The strong influence of the AACM can definitely be felt on the set – but Murray's presence really changes things up – taking the mood in a different direction than heard on the BYG albums that Mitchell, Bowie, and Favors recorded with the Art Ensemble. Side one features the extended "Flower Trane", and side two contains "Real" and "Red Cross". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peter BrotzmannNipples ... LP
Calig (Germany), 1969. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A legendary early album from German reedman Peter Brotzmann – a set that wasn't issued on the FMP label, but which is every bit as important as Machine Gun or other classics from the time! The album's got a bold statement right from the very first note – introducing new jazz freedoms with a power that even blows away 1969 recordings on the BYG/Actuel label, and other key imprints of the period – as Brotzmann blows tenor in the frontline alongside an equally-intense Evan Parker – while Derek Bailey explodes any previous conceptions of jazz guitar, Han Bennink makes mincemeat out of his drum kit, Fred Van Hove destroys a piano, and Buschi Niebergall tries his best to keep up on bass! Side two features the slightly reduced lineup of Brotzmann, Van Hove, Nibergall, and Bennink – on the equally-intense "Tell A Green Man". And Manfred Eicher produced the whole set – but with a sonic intensity that's quite different than his later work on ECM! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original black label Calig pressing, with fold-out images on the front! Cover has some light wear, some yellowing around two edges, and a small rip on the top – but vinyl is great, and this is the first copy we've seen in years!)

Philippe Mate/Daniel VallancienPhilippe Mate/Daniel Vallancien ... LP
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99
A fantastic collaboration between two key members of the French avant jazz scene – working here in a spirit that really lives up to the genre-busting legacy of the Saravah Records label! Philippe Mate improvises here on saxophone – but in a unique space that's controlled by Daniel Vallancien – not really a musician himself, but a key force in recording the classic BYG/Actuel avant jazz sessions a few years before – working here in the studio to inflect the performance of Mate with all sorts of effects and studio techniques! The approach isn't nearly as gimmicky as you might expect – and instead, the whole thing is maybe a free jazz nod to some of the more stodgy, academic electro-acoustic sounds from Paris – given a very earthy, organic quality here by the duo. Titles include "Cambodge 70", "Sanza Sallee", "Cyclothime", "Osakaphone", "Campus", and "Sax Hi Fi". LP, Vinyl record album

Francois TusquesAlors Nosferatu Combina Un Plan Ingenieux ... LP
Cacophonic (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Never-heard music from from French free jazz legend Francois Tusques – sounds that grew out of a 1968 "happening" experiment he was doing on the Parisian scene – but which then took stronger force as the American avant garde descended on the city during the BYG/Actuel generation! The tapes were recorded at a few different events at the end of the 60s – and have this loose structure in which a large ensemble improvise freely along a musical idea, then really take off into flights of their own – in a way, maybe an early example of the improvising orchestra at work. Players include Noel McGhie, Barre Phillips, Aldo Romano, Alan Silva, Claude Delcloo, Earl Freeman, and others – and titles include "Le Fumet Du Jubjub", "La Voute D'Un Caveau Ou D'Un Charnier", and "Tout Le Pouvoir Au Peuple".
