Aaron ParksLittle Big II – Dreams Of A Mechanical Man ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 12.98
A great second chapter to the Little Big album from Aaron Parks – a set that's full of as many great keyboard lines as that one – with Aaron on a mix of acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and other sweet keys – plus vibes as well! And as with that set, the keyboards are balanced by the sharp, raspy tones of Greg Tuohey on guitar – a player who almost gets key-like tones from his instrument at times, using it sparely, and with a nice sense of resonance that really helps shape the mellow grooves of the sound! The rest of the group features David Dinyard on bass and Tommy Crane on drums and percussion – and titles include "My Mistake", "Friendo", "Solace", "Here", "Is Anything Okay", "The Storyteller", "The Shadow & The Self", and "Where Now". Terence BlanchardFlow ... CD
Blue Note, 2005. Used ... $7.99
A real standout from trumpeter Terence Blanchard – and a record that arguably helped set the tone for lots of Blue Note albums in years to come by a variety of younger artists! The album's produced by Herbie Hancock – who still really lets Blanchard's horn and musical vision take the lead, but also receive a bit more careful, creative treatment in the overall approach to the record – especially that great talent for blending styles and influences that Herbie's had in his own music for most of his career! In addition to soulful lead lines from Terence, the set also features work Lionel Loueke on guitar, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Bruce Winston on tenor and soprano, Derrick Hodge on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums – and Herbie Hancock and singer Gretchen Parlatto each guest on a tune. Titles include "Wandering Wonder", "Harvesting Dance", "Over There", "Child's Play", "The Source", "Benny's Tune", and "Wadagbe". CD

Kassa OverallI Think I'm Good ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
We really loved Kassa Overall's debut, but we're completely blown away with this full length set – as the record's got a visionary sound that's completely his own – a really new mix of jazz, soul, and funk that's bound to make Kassa one of the most important talents in years to come! Overall sings and plays drums – the latter of which are used in very open, creative ways – amidst a keyboard-heavy set of instrumentation that also includes work from Sullivan Fortner on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Vijay Iyer on Fender Rhodes, Joel Ross on vibes, and Theo Croker on flugelhorn! Kassa finds a way to bring in these guests, and others – but always at a level that never changes the core style too much – so that it's always clear we're always in very personal territory, with a style that's poetic one minute, funky the next, and always extremely beautiful. Titles include "Please Don't Kill Me", "Visible Walls", "Was She Happy", "Sleeping On The Train", "Landline", "Darkness In Mind", and "The Best Of Life". CD

ThiefsGraft [La Greffe] ... CD
Jazz & People (France), 2018. Used Gatefold ... $1.99
Thiefs are a jazz combo at the core – outfitted with saxes, acoustic bass, and drums – but all three members also use a fair bit of electronics, and do so in a way that opens the door to a range of different voices that help shape the sound of the record! The mode is a bit like some of the more creative jazz-inspired projects coming from the LA scene of late – such as work on the Ropeadope label – and there's definitely some righteous power to the vocals on the set, thanks to contributions from Mike Ladd, Gael Faye, and Guillermo E Brown. Aaron Parks plays piano and keyboard on most of the set – and there's a vibe here that's a bit like his own work too – on titles that include "I Live In Fear", "Anthro", "Pas D'Ici", "Iwbah", "Beat One", and "Anthro". ✨✧ VariousStay Awake – Various Interpretations Of Music From Vintage Disney Films ... CD
A&M, 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most novel, and dare we say coolest alternative soundtrack compilations of the late 80s! Stay Awake features a wildly diverse roster of artists covering, reinterpreting and paying tribute to songs from older Disney films – including Tom Waits, Sun Ra & His Arkestra, Natalie Merchant & Michael Stipe, Aaron Neville, Bill Frisell, NRBQ, Betty Carter, Garth Hudson of The Band, The Replacements & many more – and goes a lot farther than just inviting disparate musical figures to do versions of classic songs. The material is arranged into suites and medleys that have a strangely effective flow regardless of how jaw-droppingly diverse the voices and players might be from one movement to the next. This one should be considered a late feather in the cap for creativity at A&M Records! Includes "Pink Elephants On Parade" by Sun Ra, When You Wish Upon A Star" by Ringo Starr & Herb Alpert (co-produced by Van Dyke Parks), "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" by Harry Nilsson, "Hey Ho (The Dwarfs Marching Song)" by Tom Waits, "I Wan'Na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" by Los Lobos, "Stay Awake" by Suzanne Vega, "Cruella De Ville" by The Replacements and lots more.
