Ruud BosDe Fabriek (with bonus tracks) ... CD
678 Records (Belgium), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
A rare later soundtrack from Dutch composer Ruud Bos – best known for some very funky work at the start of the 70s, and still going strong here a decade later! The score's got a much more mid 70s vibe than you'd expect – like some of the best American cop show work of the early 70s, with jazzy instrumentation intertwined with larger orchestrations – handled by Nat Peck, who had a fair bit of jazz experience himself – which means that he really lets the best elements of the music come forth and blossom! A number of tracks are upbeat and quickly-grooving – and those are mixed with some shorter scene-setting moments that balance the whole thing out strongly – and make the whole package feel like a long suite of sounds, dedicated to this lost film. There's a whopping 30 tracks in all – and titles include "Longing", "Secret Affair", "At Labour", "Sugar", "Happy House", "In Love", "Romance", "Start", "Casino", "Jack's Death", and the well-titled "Sexy Music". CD also features some bonus tracks – early takes and "rhythm mix" versions of the tunes! CD

✨✧ Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

Red SovineAnytime ... CD
Starday, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $2.99 5.99
Great work from the mighty Red Sovine – an artist who's maybe best known for his recitation-heavy records of the 70s, but who could also be a hell of a country singer on early material like this! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of the tearjerking material that Red would lean on more heavily in later years – but the approach here is tempered with a bit more of that lean 60s production that Starday Records did so well – the kind of no-nonsense style that made them such a great change from some of the major label country on the charts. Titles include "A Kiss & The Keys", "Don't Let My Glass Run Dry", "Too Much", "Nobody's Business", "Anytime", "Letter Edged In Black", "More From Habit Than Desire", and "Long Night". CD

✨✧ Rufus HarleyCourage – The Complete Atlantic Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". ✨✧ George JacksonOld Friend – The Fame Recordings Vol 3 – Rare & Unreleased Recordings From The Fame Vaults ... CD
Fame/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-issued work by the great George Jackson, mixed together with a handful of some of the few singles released back in the day – all to serve up a seminal portrait of this crucially-overlooked talent in southern soul! George was one of those backroom figures who helped out countless other artists – he wrote songs for some of the best, and recorded a fair bit of material at the Fame Records studios too – but oddly most of his music was never issued in the 60s and 70s, and it's only in more recent years that we're finally getting the fuller picture of his genius on his own! Jackson's a hell of a singer who really brings a rich degree of characterization to his well-penned words – some of the hippest, most sophisticated deep soul lyrics of his time – served up here with equally great Fame Studios backings that go way beyond the Muscle Shoals studio work the players were doing for bigger name artists. And although the set's the third in this excellent series, there's not a bit of filler, and not a sign of Jackson running out of steam – just pure deep soul greatness throughout, on titles that include "Break Away From Me", "I'm In The Middle Of A Good Thing", "It's Up To His Woman", "I'm Holding On", "Superstitious Woman", "Bad Case Of Love", "Heart On A String", "Gotta Have Soul", "That From The Heart", "Won't Nobody Cha Cha With Me", "All He Can Do Is Love You", and "If You Ain't Here". Matthew HalsallSalute To The Sun ... CD
Gondwana (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
A gem of a record from trumpeter Matthew Halsall – one of our favorite jazz musicians of the past 20 years, and an artist who just seems to be growing and growing with each new release! This set picks up on the organic, meditative quality of some of Halsall's recent records – but it also has a bit more bite, and is maybe almost a return to the roots of his earliest records on the Gondwana label – those classics that first made us fall in love with his music over a decade ago, and which made Matthew a real front-runner of the current global spiritual jazz underground! The set's got this very rich presentation – as the leader's work on trumpet is mixed with harp from Maddie Herbert, flute and tenor from Matt Cliffe, piano and kalimba from Livin Gheorghe, and great use of percussion, bass, and drums – all on long tracks that build with the best sort of post-Coltrane energy – titles that include "Joyful Spirits Of The Universe", "Mindfulness Meditations", "Tropical Landscapes", "Harmony With Nature", and "The Energy Of Life". ✨✧ 5 RoyalesFive Royales ... CD
King, Late 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stone killer from the legendary 5 Royales – one of the greatest groups to ever record for King Records in the 50s, and a key force in helping move things forward from doo wop to soul! The balance between Lowman Pauling's lead and the harmonies is amazing – a big inspiration on the young James Brown & The Famous Flames – and many cuts have this hard guitar used in a very rhythmic way, which creates a groove that few other groups could touch! The tracks all have a great hard-edged sound, with little of the schmaltz that can sometimes date these albums a bit too much – just lots of raw group vocals that definitely pave the way for 60s soul, but also have a stronger 50s R&B current in the background! The material is very rootsy soul stuff – and titles include "One Mistake", "Mine Forevermore", "Wonder Where Your Love Has Gone", "I Know It's Hard But It's Fair", and "Get Something Out Of It". CD

✨✧ VariousTaking Some Time On – The Underground Sounds Of 1970 (4CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking set of music from the start of the 70s – work by a variety of British groups who rose up from the underground and changed music forever – some who'd later fly to superstardom in the 70s, and many more who'd just remain the province of hipper listeners for decades to come! The music here is in a variety of modes – late psych, early prog, hard rock, and even experimental folk – the crowning jewels of important labels like Vertigo, Harvest, and Decca – brought together here with a really wonderful choice of cuts, and very detailed notes that helps really put all the many artists and sounds in perspective! If you think you know this moment from the classic rock records in your collection, then guess again – as you'll have plenty here to rework your ideas of 1970, in a set list of 57 tracks, with work from Gentle Giant, Blodwyn Pig, Lindisfarne, Hawkwind, Atomic Rooster, Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Egg, Patto, T2, Kevin Ayers, Rare Bird, Stray, Family, Wishbone Ash, Yes, Quatermass, East Of Eden, Pete Brown & Piblokto, McDonald & Giles, Cressida, Love Sculpture, Affinity, Curved Air, Michael Chapman, and many others. ✨✧ Jim FordBig Mouth USA – The Unissued Paramount Album ... CD
Paramount/Bear Family (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A heck of a great record from Jim Ford – an early 70s country outsider whose early work hardly got any circulation at the time – but who's managed to go on to become the stuff of legend over the years! This set's got Jim at his best – maybe sounding even more country than on his two Capitol Records sessions, with slightly fuller production – but still that very individual, very distinct way of songwriting and putting over a tune – a quality that sparkles strongly on the album's batch of all-original material by Ford. A few tracks are reworks of numbers done on his unreleased second session for Capitol, taken in a very different way – and the whole thing has an offbeat vibe that's in the best left-of-Nashville mode of the early 70s. Titles include "He Turns My Radio On", "Family Tree", "Mixed Green", "I Call Her Baby", "Rising Sign", "Which Way", "If I Go Country", and "If There's A Will There's A Way". CD
