✨✧ Missy ElliottUnder Construction ... CD
Atlantic, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Missy and Timbaland (and the usual cast of guest stars) are back and hotter than ever before on Missy's fourth full length, much more of a hip hop record this time, with tons of old school party shouts and new school neo-electro production! Under Construction is kind of a concept album (don't worry, not in the Jethro Tull kind of way) with a theme that celebrates the hip hop golden age of the mid-to-late 80s but with a modern, probably timeless flavor. The status quo R&B that Missy can't seem to get out of her system is here only at a minimum – this is a hip hop record! Past guests like Method Man (turning in a great remake of "Bring The Pain"), Ludacris, and Jay Z show up as well as 50 Cent, Ms. Jade, Beyonce Knowles, and TLC – but as usual, no one steals the show from Mis and Tim. No one would claim Missy is the most scholarly of lyricists, but as a conduit for attitude and a spicy groove she can't be beat, plus her topical and scatological rhymes and choruses fit these hip hop party bumpers like a Kangol & a gold chain. Tons of shout outs to and samples of the old schoolers that are just way too true to be nostalgic, plus strong production from Timbaland that isn't afraid to risk his reputation as an innovator by referencing his influences. The duo may have produced more astoundingly great singles in the recent past, but this is Missy and Timbaland's magnum opus, as far as full lengths go. 13 tracks including "Work It", "Go To The Floor", "Bring The Pain" featuring Method Man, "Funky Fresh Dressed" featuring Ms Jade, "Slide", "Play That Beat", "Ain't That Funny", and more. Vincent HerringDawnbird ... CD
Landmark, 1991/1992. Used ... $3.99
Solid, soulful work from Vincent Herring – blowing here wonderfully on alto and soprano sax, with a sense of feeling and creative energy that really makes him one of the key players of his generation! The proceedings are relatively straight, but they're also totally great – open, honest expression that's a nice update of 70s indie jazz modes – held together tightly by a rhythm section that includes Mulgrew Miller on piano, Ira Coleman on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums on most of the records – or Keven Hays, Dwayne Burno, and Carl Allen on a few remaining selections. Wallace Roney plays trumpet on the first set of tracks – Scott Wendholt on the others – and the whole album has a sharp-edged quintet format with an occasional bite, often rolling out in the kind of upbeat lines that usually make Herring sound best. Titles include "Sound Check", "August Afternoon", "Dawnbird", "Dr Jamie", "Toku Do", and "The Dark Side Of Dewey". CD

Huey Piano SmithHavin A Good Time ... CD
Edsel (UK), Early 60s. Used ... $11.99
A classic album of raw New Orleans soul from one of the all-time greats! Huey was a key figure who bridged the gap between the rolling sound of 50s Crescent City R&B, and later funky grooves from the 60s. This album's filled with 12 original tracks by Huey – recorded by Ace Records in Jackson, Mississippi – and titles include "Rockin Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu", "Little Chickee Wah Wah", "Havin A Good Time", "Everybody's Whalin", "We Like Birdland", and "High Blood Pressure". ✨✧ Pharoah SandersCrescent With Love ... CD
Evidence, 1992. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderfully majestic album by Pharoah – sort of a follow up to his Welcome To Love album of ballads and standards, but handled with a bit more of the expansive soul of some of his other recordings. Like that previous album, this one has Pharoah playing tenor in a quartet with William Henderson on piano – but the difference here is that Sanders has chosen a deeper, darker set of material – one that includes a few strong Coltrane originals, which are done in freely flowing versions that take along the other tracks with their energy. Titles include "Lonnie's Lament", "Wise One", "Naima", "Feelin Good", "Light At The Edge Of The World", "Crescent", and "After The Rain". CD

Art Tatum20th Century Piano Genius (Jazz Heritage pressing) ... CD
Verve, Early 50s. Used 2CDs ... $2.99
A tremendous collection of work by Art Tatum – maybe even THE collection of work by Art Tatum – as the 2CD set brings together all the material that appeared on the legendary 20th Century Fox albums by Art – recorded in a private home in Hollywood late in his career, but at a time when he was even more inventive than ever. Film studio sound whiz Ray Heindorf recorded the sessions – and also had a huge amount of unissued tracks that appear here – making the set more like a package of Volmes 1 and 2 – plus 3 and 4 as well! Lennie TristanoDescent Into The Maelstrom ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
Rare material from the great Lennie Tristano – a host of tracks that sit perfectly with his two landmark albums for Atlantic Records – and which maybe even push the envelope a bit more as well! The material is all from the 50s and early 60s – and is pulled together here in an excellent album that originally appeared on the Japanese market, then got wider circulation – really helping fill in the picture of Tristano's talents, which were often sadly under-represented on record. Highlights include a beautiful solo piece based on an Edgar Allen Poe story – "Descent Into The Maelstrom" – plus the lovely "Dram Paris 1965" and "Image Paris 1965" – plus three more tracks from a 1961 rehearsal, and trio titles with either Sonny Dallas or Peter Ind on bass, and Roy Haynes or Nick Stabulas on drums. ✨✧ Thad JonesMagnificent Thad Jones (RVG remaster edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most wonderfully lyrical records ever cut for Blue Note – and a shimmering early showcase for the genius of trumpeter Thad Jones! Jones is maybe best remembered for his work in bigger groups, but at the start of his career he's a lyrical genius – as you'll hear on this sublime session that also features tremendous tenor from Billy Mitchell – a player who was also often lost in larger groups, but who really shines wonderfully here next to Thad! The pair are perfect together, and move seamlessly through the session, trading solos with incomparable ease – yet never getting too perfect, and never lacking the humanity that makes a record like this so great. Barry Harris plays some wonderful piano – and the tracks include "If I Love Again", "Thedia", "If Someone Had Told Me", and "April In Paris". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "I've Got A Crush On You" and "Something To Remember You By". CD

✨✧ VariousListen All Around – The Golden Age of Central and East African Music (2CDs & hardcover book – with bonus download) ... CD
Dust To Digital, 1950s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderfully beautiful package – filled with gems from the central African scene of the 50s – all packaged together with a huge book of notes that's as wonderful as the music itself! The set culls together vintage singles from the Congo, Tanganyika, Zanzibar, and Kenya – not as random rare records, but instead to showcase some fantastic musical trends that were taking place in African music during the postwar years – particularly as influences from the Caribbean were starting to hit those shores in the form of imported phonograph records. Many of these tracks showcase some fantastic acoustic guitar work along with a very hypnotic singer – while others show maybe the beginning of the Cuban influence that would come into the fold even more during the 60s – and as usual with Dust-To-Digital, the book-like presentation is as much of a history lesson and travelogue as it is a treasure trove of music. 47 tracks in all – presented beautifully! Be! (Germany), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD & Hardcover book ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sprawling set of rare singles in a variety of genres – and a set that's maybe one of the most essential in the "state" series from the Be! Records label! Previous entries have included Michigan, Texas, and other states with a well-known recorded legacy – but this time around, the package focuses on cuts from a range of scenes in Virginia and West Virginia – really rare music on a variety of very small labels – done in modes that run the gamut from rockabilly to garage, to country and a bit of pop as well! As with other volumes, the package is as magnificent as the music – as the set comes with a huge 12" square hardcover book – 120 pages of information, session details, label scans, and more – in support of a wealth of music from tiny labels that include Dominion, Cozy, Fernwood, Mart, Nu-Kat, Tip Top, and other long-gone record companies from the glory days of the indie 7" single. The set features 145 tracks in all – music from Johnny Gravely, Big Al Walker, The Reactors, Butch Lester, Paul Young & The Versatones, George Curtus, Johnny Boni, Bob Varney, Dusty Owens, Hasil Atkins, Keith Anderson, Dorse Lewis, Jeanette & Hubert, Buddy Watson, and countless others! ✨✧ Heliocentrics13 Degrees Of Reality ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at the core, but it's also filled with loads of amazing sounds – instruments tuned weirdly, played weirdly, and produced weirdly – so that over the heavy drums, there's often lots of freaky, fuzzy bits and tripped-out sounds – in ways that make the record feel like some lost acid trip outtakes from the Westbound studios of the early 70s – or like some obscure funk band that dropped acid at Andy Warhol's loft! The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too. Really evocative work from pianist Mal Waldron – a rare Japanese session cut with trumpeter Terumasa Hino, and a hip group of players who really make the set sparkle! The album's easily one of the most spiritual that Mal ever cut – and features two side long tracks that build beautifully, with soaring, searching rhythms that are unlike anything else we've ever heard in another Waldron record. Other players include Takao Uematsu on tenor, Isao Suzuki on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums – and the set also feature added percussion, which really adds to the spiritual quality of the music. Toshiko Akiyoshi & Charlie MarianoToshiko Mariano Quartet (Candid) ... CD
Candid, 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
One of the few recorded meetings of alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and pianist Toshiko Akioshi in the studio – quite strange given that they were a couple at the time! The session's easily one of the last great American sessions by either player – a work that shows Mariano's alto really building on the strengths of his work in the 50s, and Akioshi's piano shedding some of its early bop influences, and going for the richly-toned sound that would serve her greatly in the 70s. The long tracks here offer plenty of space for Charlie's sharp tone to really do its thing – and that raspy warmth of the 50s is even more deeply soulful at this point – and augmented by a new sense of composition that gives the record some of its best tracks. There's almost a nascent sense of spiritualism here – quite unusual for the time – and titles include "When You Meet Her", "Toshiko's Elegy", "Deep River", and "Little T". CD

Donald BaileyBlueprints Of Jazz Vol 3 ... CD
Talking House, 2008. Used ... $6.99
A great return to form for drummer Donald Bailey – a player who's probably best known for his work in the classic Jimmy Smith Trio of the late 50s/early 60s – but who sounds especially amazing here in a recent, righteous recording! Bailey's working with some very tight talent – the mighty Odeon Pope on tenor sax, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, George Burton on piano, and Tyrone Brown on bass – all players with a lot of depth in their music, and a brooding intensity that makes the record burn a lot more fiercely than anything Bailey ever recorded back in the day. The horns are especially nice – and although Tolliver's only on two of the album's nine tracks, Pope more than holds his own on the others – blowing that heady tenor sound that always grabs attention right from the get-go. Titles include "Blues It", "Gone Now", "For All We Know", "USQ/Trilogy", "Blue Gardenia", "Plant Life", and "Variations". CD

Flo BennettHalf Past Lonely (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Gift/SSJ (Japan), 1962. Used ... $23.99
An obscure set, but a great one too – the only full album ever recorded by Flo Bennett, a singer who started in Denver, moved to LA, and managed to cut this sweetly jazzy session with help from arranger Ernie Freeman! The album's on the tiny Gift label, but it's got the care and poise of bigger-label sets from the time – particularly some of the late 50s girl singer sessions on RCA, especially those with a more jazz-based feel. The group's a small combo – with Plas Johnson on tenor, John Anderson on trumpet, and Irving Ashby on guitar – and the tunes themselves are mostly pretty fresh, and include some lesser-known mid-century numbers amidst more familiar standards. Flo's vocal style is nicely raspy at points – almost world-weary, despite a relatively young age – and songs include "Lonely Winter", "If You Were Me", "What To Do", "Half Past Lonely", "Saturday Night", "Out Of Town", "Laugh At Me", and "Never Been So Lost". Butter FingerNothing But Flying ... CD
Kung Fu Studio (Japan), 2005. Used ... $6.99
Sparely jazzy grooves from Butter Finger – aka producer Miztani Yukimasa, working in a mode that's kind of his own take on the club jazz sound of recent work from Japan! The record's got a much more programmed feel than some of the more acoustic work of groups like Sleepwalker and Soil & Pimp Sessions – but most tracks also have a focus on isolated instrumentation that steps out in the mix, either acoustic piano, tenor, or soprano sax. Plus, a few cuts have vocals, coming off with a warmer quality that reminds us of Jazztronik's best work – jazzy, with a bit of soul – and with plenty of organic grooves that more than offset the sequencing and programs on the tunes. Titles include "New Horizon", "Whispers Of Autumn", "The Moon", "Everything", "Nov 6", "Waiting For A Long Time", "Tek Blues", and "The Monster". CD

Paul ChambersWhims Of Chambers ... CD
Blue Note, 1956. Used ... $6.99 8.99
One of the few great records that modern bassist Paul Chambers made as a leader – a rare treasure given to the world before he left this planet all too soon! Chambers is maybe best remembered for some of his late 50s work with Miles Davis and John Coltrane – and the session also marks a key early appearance on Blue Note for Coltrane on tenor – acting as a sideman here, instead of a leader – but also bringing a really deep vibe to an all-star lineup that also includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The writing is great, and the group has a nice dark edge that gives the session a slightly different sound than other Blue Note albums from the time. Chambers leads off with the bass on most tracks, kind of putting the work at an off-center pace that really gives it a fresh feel – and which makes it different from the straighter bop sound of his albums as a leader on Vee Jay. Tracks include "We Six", "Dear Ann", "Tale Of The Fingers", and "Omicron". CD

✨✧ Alice ColtraneUniversal Consciousness (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Impulse/Verve, 1971. Used Gatefold ... $14.99
One of Alice Coltrane's most adventurous albums – a beautiful blend of organ, harp, percussion, and strings – much of which are transcribed for the album by Ornette Coleman! The most haunting aspect of the album is Alice's work on organ – spare, jagged, with a nascent soulful quality that's quite different from her piano work on other Impulse albums. The strings provide a sheet of sound – a shimmering backdrop to support Alice's work on the keys – moving forward tentatively, but growing in energy as the album progresses through a host of Eastern spiritual influences. Alice is way past jazz at this point – moving towards the new level of consciousness hinted at in the title, growing majestically on tracks that include "Oh Allah", "Sita Ram", "Hare Krishna", "Universal Consciousness", and "The Ankh of Amen-Ra". Chris ConnellyEulogy To Christa – A Tribute To The Music & Mystique Of Nico ... CD
Shipwrecked, 2023. New Copy 2CD ... $7.99 16.99
The magnificent voice of Chris Connelly serves up a sublime tribute to the work of Nico – a set that's not a reworking of just her key classics, but which also includes a huge amount of original new songs by Chris as well! Connelly put together the double length set after being inspired by the book on Nico, You Are Beautiful & You Are Alone – and the spirit of that well-penned biography really moves throughout the tracks, as Chris balances his own originals with really different takes on the Nico tunes – all at a level that really comes across like some modern day masterpiece that feels like it was years in the making! If you've never heard Connelly sing, you'll be blown away – and the setting of the whole project really seems to have him at his best – in a selection of two dozen songs that include "Ripcord Ripcord", "The Last Mile", "Union Square West", "Eulogy To Lenny Bruce", "I Cannot Care For You", "The Falconer", "The Black Rooms Of Richeleiu", "Reims 12/74", "A Slow Jones In New York", "Running Pure", and "Andy Incidentally". Hip-O, Mid 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
A whopping collection of the Dells' classic work – featuring tunes pulled from their years at Vee Jay, Chess, Chi-Sound, and Mercury! The package starts way back in the 50s, and traces the group through their groundbreaking 60s soul sides, their sublime baroque 70s numbers, and their later smooth modern tracks – and as you listen to this stuff, you'll be stunned to hear how great the group remained through all of that time! The early tracks are straight doo wop, with simple production; later work has the great Charles Stepney crafting some majestic Cadet/Concept arrangements; and even the modern stuff has a well-constructed smooth groove. Through it all, though, the real strength is the group's vocals – still wonderful even in the album's one more recent number, "A Heart Is A House For Love". Titles include "I Can Sing A Rainbow/Love Is Blue", "Always Together", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", "I Miss You", "Slow Motion", "We Got To Get Our Thing Together", "The Glory Ove Love", "Long Lonely Nights", "Dreams Of Contentment", "The Bossa Nova Bird", "Oh What A Night" (in 2 versions), "Stay In My Corner (in 3 versions)", and "Does Anybody Know I'm Here". Art Farmer QuartetTo Sweden With Love/Live At The Half Note ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
2 of Art Farmer's best 60s albums – back to back on one CD! Both albums feature the flugelhorn work of Farmer alongside mellow guitar work from Jim Hall, bass by Steve Swallow, and drums by either Walter Perkins or Pete La Roca. There's a spare brilliance to both albums – a sense of space, sound, and timing that is simply magical – modern, but never abrasive, and done in a spirit that's clearly influenced by the late 50s experiments of Jimmy Guiffre, but which also has more of a swinging center. The work of Hall is incredible in a setting like this, and Swallow's round, circular work on the bass seems to even further widen the center of the sound – letting both Jim and Art stretch out magically. To Sweden With Love features newly arranged versions of older Swedish tunes – including "Visa Vid Midsommartid", "Va Da Du", "De Salde Sina Hemman", and "Och Hor Du Unga Dora" – and Live At The Half Note includes the tunes "Swing Spring", "What's New", "I Want To Be Happy", "Stompin At The Savoy", and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You". The Easy Way? Jimmy Giuffre never did anything the easy way – and his classic albums from the late 50s, some of the strongest modern jazz sides of the time, are a great testament to that fact! This album's one of the most obscure – and features Jimmy in his groundbreaking percussion-less trio mode – blowing tenor, clarinet, and baritone in a group with Jim Hall on guitar and Ray Brown on bass. The notes hang magically in air – still quite rhythmic, despite the freedom of the setting, but also stretching forth in an unfettered style that set the stage for countless jazz experiments to come. Charlie GracieIt's Charlie Gracie ... CD
Stomper Time (UK), Late 1950s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
An overdue look at the 50s work of Charlie Gracie – a singer who could rock when he wanted, but also step back into a mellower pop ballad too – both of which are featured strongly on this set! Charlie cut a lot of material in Philly, at a time when the city was a real laboratory for new styles of music in the postwar years – and the production on most of these cuts is nice and lean, with great use of echo and other early pop styles to bring the most out of Gracie's surprisingly strong vocal style. There's occasional echoes of hillbilly and rockabilly modes at times – and the CD features material from the Cameo, Cadillac, and 20th Century labels – with 32 tracks in all, including the titles "Cool Baby", "Ninety Nine Ways", "Say What You Mean", "Wandering Eyes", "Crazy Girl", "Rock The Joint", "Butterfly", "Guitar Boogie", "Fabulous", "I Love You So Much It Hurts", and "A Heart Like A Rock". Chico HamiltonChico Hamilton & The Players ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
Chico Hamilton in the 70s just can't miss – he's really changed loads from his mellow 50s work in LA, and has a tendency to go for a hard grooving sound – but also one that's slightly left of center than the work of most other 70s jazz drummers – and we mean that in a good way! This cooking set for Blue Note is a great example of that offbeat approach – a tight set of fusion tracks with a warm finish and an edgey approach to the rhythms – awash with some really compelling numbers that will have you hunting down the rest of Chico's work from the decade! The group's got a great mix of acoustic and electric musicians – including Steve Turre on electric bass, Arthur Blythe on alto, Rodney Jones on guitar, and Abdullah on congas – and titles include the massive groover "Abdullah's Delight", plus the cuts "Ode to Miles", "Sex Is A Cymbal", "Mr Sweets", "First Light", and "Adair". A wonderful album by pianist John Hicks – which, despite a stupid title that makes it sound like a techno record, is a brilliant batch of easily soulful tunes that ranks with his best work of recent years! The album features Hicks in some fantastic company – most notably bassist Curtis Lundy, who's well-rounded grooves have always provided perfect accompaniment for Hicks' piano, plus Vincent Herring on alto and soprano sax, Cecil Brooks III on drums, and occasional flute by Elise Wood. ECM, 1993. Used ... $6.99
A fond farewell to Miles Davis – played here by a hip trio that features Keith Jarrett on piano, Gary Pecock on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums! A few of the numbers are ones that Davis recorded famously in years past, and a few others are originals – played by the trio in ways that are hardly Davis-like, but which certainly draw from the rich legacy of music he created. Rather than a Miles soundalike record, consider this one as a musical poem to the (then) recently departed great one – a beautiful set of music, with titles that include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Blackbird Bye Bye", "You Won't Forget Me", "Summer Night", "For Miles", and "Straight No Chaser". Barney Kessel/Shelly Manne/Ray BrownStraight Ahead ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1975. Used ... $11.99
A rare 70s reunion for the Poll Winners trio of Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, and Shelly Manne – one that has them all looking a bit shaggy on the cover, but still plenty darn tight in the grooves of the record! There's a really nice change here from the earlier sound of the group – longer tracks than before, played with a bit more sense of freedom by all players involved – but still with that tight comraderie that made the trio so great in the first place. Manne's rhythms are showing some of the looser modes of his later years – and that space is filled nicely by Kessel's still firm guitar lines and Brown's increasingly warm bass. Titles include "Blue Boy", "Caravan", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "Two Cents", and "One Foot Off The Curb". CD

Charles LloydForest Flower – Charles Lloyd At Monterey (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used ... $11.99 14.99
A famous album – and for good reason too! The set's something of a landmark in spiritual jazz from the 60s – and it features a classic live performance from Charles Lloyd, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival – almost as a distillation and popularization of ideas that were brewing in the music of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and others! The group here features a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all flowing magnificently with Lloyd's work on tenor and flute – in an open-ended groove that draws on modal rhythms for inspiration, and which features solos that stretch out, but never go "outside"! The classic performances of "Forest Flower" takes up all of side one – with a dreamy drifting quality that has Jarrett at his best – and side two features a version of his "Sorcery", plus McBee's "Song Of Her", and a version of "East Of The Sun". DIW/Columbia, 1989. Used ... $11.99
A straight street, but a great street – as Harold Mabern returns to full force in this lovely set of trio tracks! The set's one of the best of any of Mabern's early 90s sessions for DIW Records – a very strong outing with Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums – served up with a no-nonsense approach to the music that has Harold spinning off lyrical lines at his soulful best. The recording quality brings out some nice round tones in Mabern's piano – and titles include "Seminole", "To Wane", "Mr Stitt", "Straight Street", "It's You Or No One", and "Crescent". CD

Midnight MoversTruckin ... CD
Funky Delicacies/Tuff City, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Heavy heavy funk from this hard-rocking group! The Midnight Movers were a tripped out combo who used a heck of a lot of guitar work in their grooves – and who also had a 4-part sax section that riffed heavily over the beats, creating a mad wailing approach that was as hard and full-on as any of their contemporaries on the end of the 60s funk scene. This set's the first-ever collection to look at their work – and it features tunes from their rare album on the Elephant label, plus a few obscure singles that include 2 sides cut with the singers Skip & Ernest. The sound is great – better than we remember – and titles include "Funk Ain't Nothing But A Scent", "Crabs", "Pickin & Chippin", "Sweet Darlin", "Try Our Thing", "Truckin", "Long Train Runnin", "Masai", and "Put Your Mind In The Pocket". CD features a number of bonus tracks too – including the legendary "Follow The Wind (part 1 & 2)". CD

Junko Mine with Lou LevyYou're The Top – Junko Mine Sings Cole Porter ... CD
All Art/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $12.99 24.99
Japanese jazz vocalist Junko Mine made a great trip to LA for this album – working here under the leadership of pianist Lou Levy, with a group that includes some of the best west coast jazz players of the 50s! At the time, American labels were often ignoring the talent that was still flourishing strongly in the city of angels – and it was up to Japanese labels like this to give them a chance to shine on record – which they do wonderfully, in a group that features Levy on piano, Bill Perkins on tenor and flute, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Red Mitchell on bass, and Mundell Lowe on drums. Junko handles vocals, but also knows when to step aside for an instrumentalist to solo – and titles include "Easy To Love", "You're The Top", "I Concentrate On You", "In The Still Of The Night", "You Do Something To Me", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You". Sugar Minott/Johnny OsbourneBitter Sweet/Reggae On Broadway ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A pair of great records from the production hands of Prince Jammy – back to back on a single CD! First up is Bitter Sweet – one of those key records that helped Sugar Minott earn the sweet reputation that really echoed his name – as the set's got these easygoing grooves that are perfect for his warmly crackling vocals – richly expressive, but without every sounding overdone – all set up in these great instrumental elements produced and arranged by Prince Jammy! The groove is different than some of the sharper modes that were creeping in during the digital generation – very casual, with a quality that has the easygoing vocals from Minott stepping out nicely on cuts that include "I'm Not For Sale", "Give The People", "Never Too Young", "Be Careful", "Right Track", "Can't Get Over", "Save The Children", and "This World". Reggae On Broadway is a gem from Johnny Osbourne – hardly the kind of album with polish and glam that you'd expect from a Broadway title, and instead this mellow, laidback session that really showcases the genius of Prince Jammy in the studio! Given the date of the recording, things could be a lot more commercial, or a lot cleaner in a digital way – but Jammy keeps the proceedings casual and cool, which lets those magnificent vocals of Osbourne flow out in a really great way. Titles include "Let Me Your Chopper", "Live Right", "Folly Ranking", "Water Pumping", "Reggae On Broadway", "Mr Walker", "Sing Along", and "Can't Leave Jah". Great Doctor Bird package – excellent sound, and very detailed notes! CD

Mark MurphyOnce To Every Heart (Japanese version with bonus track) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 2005. Used ... $18.99
Easily the greatest album that vocalist Mark Murphy has recorded in years – and a surprising departure from a lot of his recent work! Murphy did the album in collaboration with German trumpeter Til Bronner – a player we mostly know for his own smoothly soulful, and often-grooving albums. Yet here, Bronner's got both himself and Murphy working in a lush mode that recalls the spirit of 60s sessions arranged by Claus Ogerman or Don Sebesky – Bronner on trumpet with a core jazz group, augmented by larger orchestrations on most tracks – and recorded in a spaciously sublime way that often has Murphy's vocals hanging beautifully in mid-air! There's a breathtaking depth to the album that gets past some of the simple tracks and over-tread territory of other recent Murphy albums – almost as if the album's the "classic" that Mark never got to record back in the day, but which is finally coming out now, 50 years into his career in music! A real contrast to the recent Mark Murphy dancefloor work – such as his vocals with Five Corners Quintet – and featuring the originals "I Know You From Somewhere" and "Our Game" – plus standards "It Never Entered My Mind", "I'm Through With Love", "When I Fall In Love/My One & Only Love", and "Love Is Here To Stay". Japanese pressing features the bonus track "Detour Ahead". CD

Brassy LA sunshine big band from Marty Paich – with plenty of subtle, grooving twists & turns, too – with lots of lighter touches and late 50s Hollywood style! Marty is better remembered for his studio arrangement and production genius than as a band leader, but shows a really steady hand here handling a big group of jazz players including Pete Candoli, Herbie Harper, Herb Geller, Mel Lewis and others. Titles are mostly Paich compositions, with the exception of the centerpiece "What's New". The compositions are great, and Eddie's in top form on piano, with backing by Donald Harrison, Conrad Hewig, and Brian Lynch. Titles include "Palmas", "Doctor Duck", "Bouncer", and "Slowvisor". ✨✧ Bernard Purdie (Pretty Purdie)Soul Drums (expanded edition) ... CD
Date/Greenstreets, 1967. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
Massive work from one of the funkiest drummers of all time – the legendary Bernard Pretty Purdie, stepping out here in a batch of instrumentals that may well be his greatest album ever! Bernard's drums are right up front in the mix – leading off all tunes with a full, funky, echoey sort of approach that's unlike anything else we can think of – and certainly different from any other late 60s albums of this type! The production is totally great – and has a way of pulling out some of the weirdest aspects of the music – which itself features guitar from Billy Butler and Eric Gale, bass from Bob Bushnell, tenor and flute from Seldon Powell, and organ and piano from Richard Tee – who also handled all the arrangements on the set! The centerpiece is the hit single "Funky Donkey", but just about every track's a groover in its own way – and titles include "Soul Drums", "Bill's Groove", "Jimmy's Back", "Testifyin", "Modern Jive", "Blow Your Lid", "Bee N Tee", and "Soul Bossa Nova". This new edition includes 8 bonus tracks, with a couple rare 45 tracks and more that have never been released – all soulful & funky – well paired with the Soul Drums album! Bonus tracks are in stereo, and include "Alexander's Rag Time Band", "Genuine John", "Soul Clappin", "If You Never Cried", "Stop" and "Time Is Tight". Sun RaExotica ... CD
Modern Harmonic, Late 50s/1960s. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
A fantastic take on the music of Sun Ra – a set that looks at the way his sounds dovetailed with the exotica movement in American music of the postwar years! Given that he claimed to be from outer space, Ra was already pretty darn exotic himself – but his music also arose at a time when artists like Martin Denny and Les Baxter were taking global sounds and fusing them into more mainstream American music, including jazz – with results that have become legendary over the years! And while Denny, Baxter, and other contemporaries were more involved with mood music, Ra was part of a generation of jazz musicians – such as Yusef Lateef or Wilbur Harden – who were working a richer vein of the territory for jazz – as you'll hear in these wonderful tracks. The set brings together key sides from the earliest Ra recordings, plus some unissued material too – done in the really great style of the other Modern Harmonic reissues in recent years. Unissued titles include "April In Paris", "Paradise", "Star Bright", "Spontaneous Simplicity", "Somewhere In Space", and "Cha Cha In Outer Space" – and other titles include "Overtones Of China", "Tiny Pyramids", "The Nile (part 1)", "Kingdom Of Thunder", "Ancient Aiethopia", "India", "Friendly Galaxy", and "Africa" – plus the complete version of "Island In The Sun". Light In The Attic, 2007. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
The last-ever album from the legendary Lou Reed – and a set that's completely different from the sounds he gave the world in the Velvet Underground, and on most of his solo work in recent decades too! The music is spare and ambient, and very much lives up to the "meditations" in the title – inspired strongly by Lou's love of Tai Chi, but also delivered with a quality that echoes a lot of the ambient work of Brian Eno too! There's a great sense of texture and tone here – really slow-building, quiet-shifting sound that has this really subtle, almost earthy power – definitely music that is designed to alter the body and mind, but in very peaceful ways. Titles include "Move Your Heart", "Find Your Note", "Wind Coda", and "Hudson River Wind". CD

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
They're not lying with the title of this one – as Rita's voice is as cool as it gets, very much in the mode of 50s work by June Christy or Chris Connor – but made even more icy because of her Dutch accent, which adds a strange twist to her interpretation of the English lyrics on the set! Backing is by Ian Corduwener or Tom Dissevelt, and there's an unusual blend of flute and bass and strings on many of the tracks, which creates a sound that makes the music somber and sad – a blend that really works wonders with material like "Only A Moment Ago", "Where Are You", "There Is No Greater Love", "The Song Is You", "They Didn't Believe Me", and "Star Eyes". Jimmy ScottLittle Jimmy Scott – The Savoy Years & More (3CD set) ... CD
Savoy, 1950s/1975. Used 3 CDs ... $11.99
Some of the best material ever recorded by singer Jimmy Scott – presented as a lovely 3 disc package with copious notes, and a lot of bonus material too! The bulk of the sides were cut during the earliest years of Jimmy's career – from 1952 to 1960, all with great small group, jazz-based backing – very nicely handled by the folks at Savoy Records – with just the right sort of pitch to work well with Scott's unique voice. There's a lot of unreleased cuts from these sessions – which makes the package essential even if you own the records – and titles include "If You Only Knew", "If I Ever Lost You", "Once", "What Good Would It Be", "I'll Never Deceive You", "Please Forgive Me", "Guilty", "Anytime Anyday Anywhere", and "The Talk Of The Town". The set then ends with the full album Can't We Begin Again, from Jimmy's "lost" period in 1975 – ne of the most obscure albums we've ever seen from Scott – and that's saying a lot, given how obscure most of his career was before his relatively recent revival! This session – billed in the notes as his "umpteenth comeback" – was recorded in Chicago in 1975, but has a feel that's in keeping with some of Jimmy's more traditional work from earlier years. The set was done by producer Fred Mendelsohn, who'd recorded some of Jimmy's earlier work – and features backings by pianist Ace Carter, plus additional string arrangements from Alex Hamilton. Jimmy's voice is actually a bit less fragile and somewhat deeper than usual – possibly even more confident – and the "jazz with strings" format brings a full feel to the session, but one that never dominates the vocals. Titles include "The More I See You", "I'll Be Around", "Anchored By My Side", "You've Changed", "Can't We Begin Again", "Close Your Eyes", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". Box features 66 tracks in all! CD

Silent PoetsSun ... CD
Nocturne (France), 2006. Used ... $3.99
One of the richest and most complex recordings we've ever heard from Silent Poets – a brilliant blend of strings, soul, and sounds! The style here is a bit more cinematic than before – taking cues from recent Silent Poets work, but unlocking a new sense of majesty in the music – one that unfolds gently as the tunes go on, and really finds a unique place for itself in the modern sound spectrum. There's a sense of confidence and power here that goes way beyond the last few Silent Poets records – and the initial forays into this type of music have finally found their place, and come together much more strongly here. Shawn Lee delivers a bit of guest work on the record, and titles include "Rock Star", "From Earthling", "Future", "Dumb Girl", "Next Episode", "Man On The Street", "Fate", and "Wonder". CD

Capitol, 1960. Used ... $2.99
A Swingin Session indeed – as Frank steps out with Nelson Riddle on one of his last great albums for Capitol! The record's got the bounce and lilt of Frank's earlier gems with Riddle – a sly mix of jazz and strings that's every bit the best fit for Blue Eyes' vocals at the end of the 50s as it was back when he and Riddle cooked up the comeback sound earlier in the decade – and as before, although the tunes are mostly familiar, they're spun out by Frank as if they're his own – phrased beautifully, punched up nicely, and swung in just the right way to fit the spirit of the session! Titles include "I Concentrate On You", "Blue Moon", "When You're Smiling", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Always", and "September In The Rain". Ninja Tune, 2005. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
Soul jazz vocalist Dwight Trible gathers the forces for this magnificent effort – an album pairing his emotionally rich vocals and singular spirit with a group of largely west coast allstars – and it's pure genius! The Life Force Trio, from what we can tell, is simply the moniker for a small army of free thinking guests from the deep funk, hip hop and turntablist underground assembled by Carlos Nino of Ammon Contact. The guest list includes SA-RA, J Dilla, Madlib, Daedelus, Scienze Of Life, Nate Morgan, Dwight's Build An Ark fellows and many others. It features some vocals Dwight has laid down for other albums, and some unreleased recordings – how they pair up so intricately well, with such fresh and varied production is a beautiful mystery. This record could have merely served as an interesting exercise in combined talents, but instead it absolutely soars, and could be remembered as Dwight's masterpiece! It may also be one of the best Ninja Tune albums ever! Tracks include "Equipoise" feat SA-RA, "Freedom Dance", "The Rhythm", "Waves Of Infinite Harmony", a fresh take on Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", "Love Is The Answer", "I Was Born On Planet Rock", "Constellations" feat Super Nova, "Celestial Blues" and more. Mosaic/United Artists/Roulette, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $49.99
Some of the most important work ever recorded by Randy Weston – 5 early albums that really pushed the boundaries of modern jazz! First up on the set is Little Niles – a fantastic set that features some of Weston's best early compositions – angular and Monk-ish numbers, but with a profound influence from African rhythms. Next up is Live At The Five Spot – a really compelling live set that features Randy working out Little Niles-ish numbers with a live group that includes Kenny Dorham and Coleman Hawkins. After that is Piano A La Mode – a sublimely simple album of mellow piano tracks – followed by a series of previously unissued tracks done with a quartet that includes Roy Haynes, Cecil Payne, and Ron Carter. Following that are some of Randy's most Afro-centric albums – very unique for the time, and equally powerful today – the records Uhuru Afrika and Highlife – both of which feature larger groups working through some distinctly African ideas in jazz. Nearly every record features arrangements by Melba Liston – and if you've ever wondered where to start with Randy, this is it – because the set encapsulates nearly all of the biggest contributions he ever made to jazz! 40 titles in all – with tunes that include "Little Niles", "Nice Ice", "Earth Birth", "Gingerbread", "Saucer Eyes", "204", "CB Blues", "Where", "Fe Double U Blues", "African Lady", "Bantu", "Kucheza Blues", "Blues To Africa", and "Congolese Children". The famous 50s team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are reunited strongly here – after working alone for several years on their own projects! The groove here is a bit more open and less arranged than some of the pair's earlier projects – mostly just two trombones in the lead, soloing separately, with backing from a rhythm trio – split into two for each half of the album, with Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes handling side one; and Evans, Tommy Williams, and Art Taylor on side two. Tunes are short, but include deft demonstrations of the solo talents of each player – and titles include "Judy", "Alone Together", "Going, Going, Gong", "Trixie", "This Could Be The Start Of Something", "Georgia On My Mind", "I Concentrate On You", and "Just For A Thrill". A mighty new effort from the amazing Tom Ze – a wild, heaving stylistic sprawl that's as dense and wonderful as his other recent efforts for Trama – but far more ambitious than anything he's done in many years! If you know anything about Tom Ze, you know that the man's aural art is quite difficult to describe, from the post-Tropicalia heyday to today! This set is a 16 song operatic suite that seems to be a stylistic sibling to his great (and quite rare) Estudando O Samba album from the mid 70s. Tom is taking on Greek mythology and age-old issues of gender oppression here – on an album produced with a sly, sinister groove by Jair Olivera. Incredible stuff – with all of the jerky, pulsating avant funk and leftfield grooves of Tom Ze at his recent best! The tracks are divided into 3 sections (Primero Ato, Segundo Ato and Terciero Ato) and include "Ave Dor Maria", "Estupido Rapaz", "O Amor E Um Rock", "Elaeu", "Para La Do Para", "Prazer Carnal", "Teatro (Dom Quixote)", "A Volta Do Trem Das Onze" and more! Bear Family (Germany), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
The shadow of Hank Williams still looms large in country music well into the 21st Century – but it had an especially strong force in the years after his too-early death – as you'll hear here in a great selection of covers, tributes, and other songs that continue the short-but-strong legacy of revolution that Hank brought to country music! Some of the cuts here are pop numbers, and show the way that Williams' original tunes found many different audiences in the 50s – yet most are pure country, and are way more than straight remakes of originals by the legend. Not long ago, we were very plugged into the sound of Rio through countless great records issued on the Brazilian scene – but more recently, things have gone digital and a bit more underground – which makes a collection like this such an essential way of keeping in touch with the music – a really well-done collection that shows just how much has been happing in Brazil in recent years! There's definitely echoes of older styles in the music, but they resonate with a freshness that's amazing – with qualities that make each new tune on the set a real delight – in a lineup that features titles that include "Sigo Num Site/Marmore" by Rosabege, "Vento De Bierada" by Dora Morelenbaum, "Bandeide" by Troa, "Gigolo" by Jonas Sa, "Soar Estranho" by Tiago Nassif, "Cliche" by Pedro Fonte, "Saudade"b y Ana Frango Electrico, "Avos De Experienca" by Exercito De Bebes, "Briga De Familia" by Vovo Bebe, "Apreco Antigo" by Le Ameida, "Sambolero" by Os Ritmistas, and "Dois Litorais" by Joana Quieroz. Fresh Sound (Spain), 1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $26.99
A massive overview of work from the Barcelona scene of the mid 20th century – most of it music we'd never heard before! The package was done in conjunction with the book of the same name – and it's divided up into 3 different sections – trad jazz from the 20s and 30s, mainstream jazz from the years after the Spanish Civil War, and modern jazz from the late 50s and early 60s! That last segment is our favorite here – as you might guess – and the CD features rare early material from pianist Tete Montoliu, often in groups with horn players, plus other tracks from saxophonist Mantequilla. Modern titles include "The High & The Mighty", "Bernie's Tune", "Delaunay's Dream", "Home Cookin", and "Laverne Walk" by Montoliu; and "Blue Note", "Vat 69", "Balada", "Whisky Jazz", and "La Tuna Club" by Mantequilla. Trad jazz CD features a total of 27 tracks by assorted groups – and "posguerra" CD features an additional 31, mostly from the 40s and early 50s. CD

Styles run the gamut from mambo to voodoo, biguine to goombay, calypso to cha cha, and lots more in between – with a total of 48 cuts by artists who include Compay Segundo, Facundo Rivera, Dioris Vallardes, Luis Quintero, Joe Harriott, Ruben McCoy, Theophilus Beckford, Sidney Bean, Josephine Premice, The Mighty Terror, Blind Blake, Cout Ossie, Cecil Lloyd, Mongo Santamaria, Henri Salvador, and many others! Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
A deep look at a blues scene that doesn't always get its due – music not from Chicago, Memphis, or various points south – but some nicely gritty tracks that were cut in New York during the postwar years! Despite New York's fame as a hub of jazz, soul, and other styles – the city also had a surprisingly strong blues scene in the 50s and 60s, which is when most of these tracks were recorded – music that's both in the electric modes that were showing up in other urban centers at the time, and also in some more traditional modes that were sometimes left behind in other cities – but which got a nice revival in New York, thanks to an interest in folk blues from the underground! Material here was originally recorded by a range of different labels – Old Town, Atlantic, Mercury, Prestige, Fire, Apollo, King, and Chess – and as you'd expect from Ace, there's also some unreleased material on the set, all presented with a great assortment of notes and details on every single track. 26 titles in all – with cuts that include "Bad Blood" by Champion Jack Dupree, "Step It Up & Go" by Blind Boy Fuller, "The Guy With A 45" by Allen Bunn & His Trio, "Stormy Monday Blues" by Bob Gaddy, "Kansas City March" by Wild Jimmy Spruill, "Four Women Blues" by Larry Johnson & Hank Adkins, "Idle Hours" by Lonnie Johnson with Victory Spivey, "Hard Times" by Noble Thin Man Watts, "Believe Me Darling" by June Bateman, "Security" by Tarheel Slim & Little Ann, "Jack That Cat Was Clean" by Dr Horse, and "Goodbye Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison. VariousReady Or Not – Thom Bell Philly Soul Arrangements & Productions 1965 to 1978 ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Sublime soul from the great Thom Bell – one of our favorite arranger, producer, songwriters of all time – and a talent who really helped push the Philly soul scene much farther than most during the 70s! Bell was trained as a classical pianist as a kid – which might explain part of his ear for a special sort of tune – but by the time of this work, he was neck-deep in the soul scene – and working with a fantastic track record for bringing the best out of a very wide variety of artists! Bell was especially great with groups – he helped more than a few really stretch out their wings and grow – but as you'll hear here, Thom also handled a fantastic range of music in Philly studios – all with magnificent touches that really set the tunes apart from the rest – French horns, harpsichord, and especially that twangy sitar sound that worked so well with a harmony ballad. The set's got 23 tracks in all, and a massive set of notes on the man and his music – with titles that include "What I See" by Three Degrees, "Here I Go Again" by Archie Bell & The Drells, "You've Been Untrue" by The Delfonics, "Moody Woman" by Jerry Butler, "Something For Nothing" by MFSB, "One Man Band" by Ronnie Dyson, "Close The Door" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" by Johnny Mathis, "Look The Other Way" by Lesley Gore, "What Kind Of Lady" by Dee Dee Sharp, "It's The Same Old Love" by The Courtship, "Do You Remember Yesterday" by The Intruders, "Track Of The Cat" by Dionne Warwick, and "I Wanna Be A Free Girl" by Dusty Springfield. ✨✧ Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". One of the hipper Louis Armstrong albums of the 50s – a set that still has him singing in that charming comeback style of other sessions of the time – but which also has a slightly deeper groove overall! The New Orleans Nights title is taken very strongly here – and the session has a much more stretched out, open-ended feel than some of Armstrong's sessions from the time – almost the sort of material you'd hear in a Crescent City club in the small hours of the evening, polished a bit perhaps for a larger audience. Players include Barney Bigard on clarinet, Jack Teagarden on trombone, Bud Freeman on tenor, and Earl Hines on piano – and titles include the hip suite "New Orleans Function", which features narration by Armstrong – plus "Struttin With Some Barbecue", "Basin Street Blues", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", and "Bugle Call Rag". A pivotal session for Gil Evans – one that brought his genius to the American public strongly and successfully, without the help of Miles Davis! Sure, Gil had recorded albums as a leader before this one – but the sparkling quality of this set is right up there with the charts he handled for Miles, and the quality of the players in the group make the performance every bit as great. Gil's band includes trumpeter Johnny Coles, plus Ron Carter on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, Budd Johnson on tenor, and Ray Crawford on guitar – all players who open up the sound with a magnificent array of colors that sparkle from the sublime Evans arranging touch. Prestige, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An essential Art Farmer session from the mid 50s – and a magnificent batch of hardbop tracks that we'd rank with some of our favorite work on Blue Note! The group is incredibly strong – with Hank Mobley on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all coming together with a magical in-the-pocket groove that persists on nearly every track. Farmer's still at a formative stage here – and he's going for a much harder sound than usual, with an excellent tone and extremely well calculated solos throughout. Mobley's at his best from this period, and his playing puts this session more in the tightly executed Blue Note camp (ala some of the Horace Silver late 50s recordings), than it does the Prestige/New Jazz blowing session mode. ✨✧ Al FosterReflections ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Drummer Al Foster has a hell of a legacy, one that includes some famous 70s work with Miles Davis – and he's a hell of a leader, too – the kind that always seems to get a little sort of something extra from the players in his group! That's definitely the case here, as he works with a lineup that includes Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Chris Potter on tenor and soprano, and Kevin Hays on piano and Fender Rhodes – all musicians you'll know from their own records, but who come together here with a strong sense of voice under Al's leadership! Potter feels warmed up and more soulful than usual, Payton seems to have a bit more bite, and Hayes really feels unbridled on the keys – maybe in part because the record also has some excellent work on bass from Vicente Archer. Titles include the Foster originals "TS Monk", "Monk's Bossa", and "Anastasia" – plus takes on "Pent Up House", "Blues On The Corner, "Punjab", and "Half Nelson". CD

One of the greatest 50s showcases for the tenor talents of Warne Marsh – a deceptively understated album that captures Warne at his most fluid and creative point! The setting is a quartet – with Ronnie Ball on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Marsh is magnificent throughout, really blowing with a tone that is fresh and filled with modern ideas – yet never overdone, nor too willfully complex to lose the train of the tunes. The approach is almost Konitz-soulful – a wonderful distillation of ideas in the hands of one magical talent – and titles include "Ad Libido", "It's All Right With Me", "Playa Del Ray", "Autumn In New York", and "You Are Too Beautiful". ✨✧ Jimmy ScottEverybody's Somebody's Fool ... CD
Decca/Verve, Early 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from a young Jimmy Scott – a great collection that brings together rare singles for Decca, Coral, and Brunswick – plus a few tracks that were never issued at the time! Although Jimmy's work has become famous in recent years – thanks to much-needed support towards the later stretch of his life – he seems to sound even more compelling on these early sides – hanging in a sublime space between male and female vocal traditions, and often backed by groups that bring a bit of a modern flavor to the music. We'd almost say that we dig these sides more than Jimmy's better-known work for Savoy in the 50s – and backings are by the groups of Lionel Hampton, Billy Taylor, and Lucky Thompson – all artists who really keep jazz at the forefront. Titles include "Wheel Of Fortune", "I Wish I Knew", "I've Been A Fool", "Come What May", "They Say You Cry", "Alone With A Memory", "When You Surrender", "Why Was I Born", and "The Bluest Blues". CD

Mellow soul is right – because this set swings like some great lost 70s session on Muse or Mainstream! Pete Yellin was playing way back in the day, and his work on alto and soprano is joined here by Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Chick Corea on piano, Carl Allen on drums, and Vincent Herring on additional saxes. The best cuts on the record have a post-Coltrane searching mode that's augmented with a tighter hardbop approach – and Pete Yellin produced the set with a no-nonsense approach that gets the best out of the group's sound. A really cool collection of car-themed tunes – not 60s hot rod numbers, but mostly 50s tracks from those years when the automobile was really beginning to dominate American culture – and served as the inspiration for car-based cuts in a variety of different styles! A good number of the cuts here are 50s rockers, including some wild novelty-oriented numbers – but there's also country tracks, vocal tunes, and plenty more too – served up in a really well-done assortment of 33 songs that goes way past the familiar material you might find on a collection like this! As always, Bear Family have done a really great job – with presentation, notes, track selection, and more – on titles that include "Freeway USA" by The Bonnevilles, "Stop Jivin Start Drivin" by Bert Keyes, "Cruisin Central" by Faron Warmer, "Keep A Driving" by Chuck Willis, "Flat Tire" by The Del Vikings, "Wow Man" by Bobby Jackson, "The Drive In" by The Aquatones, "Get Out Of The Car" by The Lancers, "Cruisin" by Bucky & The Premieres, "Hey Little Car Hop" by George Weston, and "Big Green Car" by Jimmy Carroll. ✨✧ Jimmy AbneyReturn To Forever ... CD
Yoruba (UK), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet electric soul from Jimmy Abney – one of the best Osunlade discoveries we've heard in recent years, and an artist who's bound to make plenty of waves on his own – even without Osunlade's support! Abney sings and plays keyboards in the style of some lost 70s soul great – but also comes across with a sound that's a bit more contemporary – somewhat more stripped down, and nicely lean – in ways that make most of the tunes here fluid and sparkling, but in ways that are light years from commercial soul. Jimmy chooses to cover Marvin Gaye's "Come Go With Me" and Heatwave's "Star Of The Story" – and both tunes are a key hint at his sound, which often has some nicely moogy undercurrents and spacey grooves. An obscure reissue that collects some of the best work by James Brown soul sister Vicki Anderson – a heck of a great vocalist, and right up there with Lyn Collins and Marva Whitney for sheer raw soul power! Vicki's work was actually some of the funkiest and most righteous to come out of the James Brown camp at the end of the 60s – and the tracks on this set really show her working at full steam – and includes some all-out groovers that have had a long life in recent years, thanks to a strong sample history. A warm little live set from Andy Bey – quite possibly one of the most personal and unassuming albums of his recent comeback career! The set's a trio one, recorded at the end of the 90s – and it features Andy on both vocals and piano, plus Peter Washington on bass, and either Kenny Washington or Vito Lesczak on drums. There's an upfront, righteous quality to most tunes here – a style that reminds us a lot of Nina Simone's best live work in a similarly stripped-down setting – and although all tunes are standards, Andy really takes off with them wonderfully – bringing a whole new sense of spirit and meaning that we wouldn't expect! A landmark set from a group who only ever gave the world two albums – but who've gone on to have a huge influence over the years! This initial offering from Breakwater is a masterful blend of jazzy fusion and mellower soul – a sound sifted together so perfectly, it really tops the rest of the combo's contemporaries – hitting a careful balance that never gets too cheesy or commercial, and which still manages to glow as strongly into the 21st century as it did when first released back in the day! The sound here is sublime – warm, but never sleepy – jazzy, but never cliched – and mixed in such a way that the vocals and instruments almost get center stage in the spotlight without trying to crowd one another out. A recent album from the legendary George Duke, and a great one too – put together with a sense of soul and sound that really recalls some of Duke's best work of the late 70s! The album's got a wonderful balance between electric and acoustic elements – especially at points when George puts the keyboards aside, and steps out on acoustic piano – creating lines that ring out proudly amidst the warm backdrops of the group. The first half of the CD concentrates on his wonderful vocal tunes – steeped in mellow, expressive tunes ranging from stripped down piano and vocal ballads and some more lush material with strings. Dick's doesn't get his vocal props in our half of the globe – and here's hoping sets like this will spread the word! Titles include "Copabana", "Marina", "Uma Loura", "Nick Bar", "Mundo Distaste", "Perdido De Amor", "Tereza Da Praia" (Dick Farney & Lucio Alves), "Grand Verdade" and more. The 9 tracks that close out the CD concentrate on his jazzier side, with Dick on piano with his Quintet on the tracks "O Genio Da Marly", "Fique Calma", "Nervosinho" and more; the Dick Farney Quartet works the Gershwin songbook with "Strike Up The Band", "Oh Lady Be Good", Bt Not For Me" and "I've Got Rhythm". ✨✧ Von FreemanImprovisor ... CD
Premonition, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Von Freeman the way we like to hear him – live! Although Von's recorded output has been quite low until recent years, the fantastic tenorist has been playing around Chicago for the past 50 years – working in regular gigs that are still some of the best shows you could ever hope to catch in this city. The CD features tracks from two of Von's regular haunts – shows at the Green Mill and New Apartment Lounge – both of which have him working with strong regular players, in a very comfortable lineup that really lets him open up and show the kind of magic that only he can craft in this sort of setting. One track is also recorded at the Chicago Cultural Center. Jason Moran plays piano on two tracks. Titles include "If I Should Lose You", "Ski Wee", "Darn That Dream", "Blue Bossa", and "I Like The Sunrise". CD

✨✧ Hal GalperArt-Work – Live At The Jazz Room ... CD
Origin, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hal Galper sounds as great as ever on this recent live set – as bold, strong, and powerful on the keys now as he did back in the 70s – getting some especially great support from Reggie Workman on bass and Rashied Ali on drums! Both players give the record a bit of an edge – a sound that's slightly more open and exploratory than some of Galper's straighter work, in a way that shakes out some of his warmer tones, and brings in more angular lines on the piano – notes that aren't exactly free, but freewheeling in their energy, especially on the more familiar tunes. Titles include "Take The Coltrane", "Soul Bod", "Blue In Green", "Soliloquy", "When Autumn Leaves Us", and "Constellation". CD

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieAfro (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Dizzy Gillespie's finest Afro-Cuban moments! The material on this album has been issued under a few different titles over the years, but this is the early Afro package – the one that features a beautiful David Stone Martin cover, and a title that really gets at the Latin influences in the material. The centerpiece of the record is a side-long workout on the "Manteca" theme, played by Diz and a group that includes Lucky Thompson, Wade Legge, Charlie Persip, and Jose Mangual – all grooving hard in a sound that virtually defines the term of cubop! The other tracks on the album are great too – versions of "Caravan", "Con Alma", and "Night In Tunisia" – all done in a Latin jazz mode, with some nice flute solos by Gilberto Valdes. And if that's not enough, the reissue features a tiny 5" record sleeve cover – just like the original! CD

✨✧ Slide HamptonSpirit Of The Horn ... CD
Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Well-arranged recent work from Slide Hampton – an artist who just keeps on maturing wonderfully over the years! Hampton's working here with his World Of Trombones group – a lineup that features a dozen trombones, brought together beautifully with this compressed sound that's sonically amazing – a mode that recalls some of the best modern use of trombones in the 50s and 60s, with more complexity than you'd find in Slide's work of that period. There's still plenty of standout solos amidst the larger group – and rhythm features Larry Willis on piano, John Lee on bass, and Victor Jones on drums – so there's a nice swing to the material too. Titles include "All In Love Is Fair", "April In Paris", "Lament/Basin Street Blues", "Blues For Eric", "Dolphin Dance", and "Moment's Notice". CD

✨✧ Herbie HancockNew Standard ... CD
Verve, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that some saw as a bit of a jolt in the career of Herbie Hancock when it was released – but a set that's actually gone on to become one of the classics in his catalog, thanks to the mix of material and the players on the date! The "new standard" in the title is a reference to many of the songs in the collection – taken from more (then) recent rock and pop, but then turned into jazz instrumental tapestries with Herbie on acoustic piano, Michael Brecker on tenor and soprano, John Scofield on guitars, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Titles include versions of "You've Got It Bad Girl", "Thieves In The Temple", "Your Gold Teeth II", "All Apologies", "Love Is Stronger Than Pride", "Mercy Street", and "Scarborough Fair".. CD

✨✧ Hampton HawesHampton Hawes Trio Vol 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
'Leaping brilliance on the keys from a young Hampton Hawes – a player who makes this record bristle with excitement from the very first note! The format is simple, but the presentation here is breathtaking – a rock-solid trio performance that shows why Hawes was one of the greatest talents on the keys to come out of the west coast in the 50s – one with the fluidity of some of the better-known crossover players of the era, but the harder edge and sharper notes of the boppers, plus just a touch of nascent soul jazz in the rhythms. Backing is by Red Mitchell on bass and Chuck Thompson on drums – and titles include "Hamps Blues", "Carioca", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Blues The Most", "Easy Living" and "All The Things You Are". ✨✧ John HicksPiece For My Peace ... CD
Landmark, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
A warm and soulful set of tracks by John Hicks – a wonderful album that moves past his more familiar trio modes, and shows how great he can sound with some horn players in the mix! The lineup here is wonderful – with a core combo that features Curtis Lundy's bass and Cecil Brooks' drums – joined by a shifting assortment of reeds handled by Bobby Watson on alto, Vincent Herring on tenor, and Elise Wood on flute! There's a lot of Watson-like energy on the record, but the album's also clearly Hicks' genius too – as he's at the height of his powers, crafting post-McCoy Tyner type blocks of modal sound, shifting mood and color effortlessly – perfectly matched by the always strong bass playing of Lundy. Titles include "Faith", "Piece For My Peace", "So In Love", "Don't Let It Go", and "Diane". CD

✨✧ Shirley HornLoads Of Love/Shirley Horn With Horns ... CD
Mercury, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 early albums by the great Shirley Horn – back to back on one CD! On Loads Of Love, Shirley sings some somber ballads over large orchestrations by Jimmy Jones – in a mode that's different from recent work, but which also shows that she's a great singer with a really sensitive style. The groove's not as open as on some of her small combo recordings, but that also brings out a side of Shirley that you don't always hear on record – a committed, honest, slightly sad style that's quite striking, considering that this was one of Shirley's first albums. Titles include "That's No Joke", "Love For Sale", "Ten Cents A Dance", "Who Am I?", "Only The Lonely", and "Wild Is Love". Horn With Horns is hip stuff from Shirley – very mature and swinging jazz, despite any hokiness you might expect from the "with horns" tag. Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, Thad Jones, and Billy Byers – and the set list features some good current numbers, and a bunch of standards, all redone nicely in a 60s sophistijazz style. Tracks include "Wee Small Hours", "That Old Black Magic", "The Great City", "On The Street Where You Live", and "Let Me Love You". CD

✨✧ Bobby HutchersonSkyline ... CD
Verve, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A relatively mellow recent effort from Bobby Hutcherson – one that has him playing both vibes and marimba, and going for a laidback style that allows plenty of spaces for tonal colors and shades of sound! The group's a quintet, with Kenny Garrett on alto, Geri Allen on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Al Foster on drums – and in a way, the album's kind of a link between Hutcherson's inside work of the Landmark years, and some of his more exploratory work of the late 70s. Titles include "The Coaster", "Candle", "Tres Palabras", "Delilah", "Who's Got You", and "Pomponio". CD

✨✧ Karin KrogMany Faces Of Karin Krog – Recordings 1967 to 2017 (6CD set) ... CD
Meantime (Norway), Late 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. Used 6CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the legendary Karin Krog – one of our favorite jazz singers of all time – and maybe one of the most creative talents to emerge from the European jazz scene in the past 50 years! Karin's not just a regular singer – she's a hell of a collaborator, and a great experimentalist who's always willing to try out new sounds and styles – modes she's explored since her initial recordings of the 60s, and the wonderful legacy of music she's given us on record from that time onwards – which still results in fantastic new music in recent years too! This package goes way beyond any other Krog collection we've ever seen – not just because it offers up differing discs that look at her many musical "faces" – but also because it brings together recordings for a number of different labels across a great span of time – all to really show the full range of her music! Even if you've got as many of Karin's records as we do, there's plenty that's new here too – and the well-done package divides each disc up into a special theme – with standard material, key collaborations, vocal experiments, and more. The set includes work with John Surman, Steve Kuhn, Marty Paich, Georgie Fame, Don Ellis, Slide Hampton, Red Mitchell, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Drew, Bengt Hallberg, Archie Shepp, and others – and one CD features just spare duets with musicians, and another features some great bigger band material. 59 tracks in all – with loads of surprises! ✨✧ Michel LegrandLegrand Piano – I Love Paris ... CD
Columbia, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sparkling postwar musical fantasy of Paris – one made up of a host of famous themes from French pop music of the 20th century, all set to lush string arrangements by a young Michel Legrand! The album's not as upbeat or jazzy as some of Legrand's later soundtrack work, but it's got a wonderful quality all its own – a warmly romantic vision of a Paris that was still putting the pieces back together less than a decade after WWII, presented in a way that glosses sweet sounds over darker corners with a vaguely eerie feel. The record instantly made Legrand an international favorite, and features "The Last Time I Saw Paris", "Paris Canaille", "Autumn Leaves", "A Paris", "La Vie En Rose", "Under Paris Skies", and "April In Paris. ✨✧ Pat MartinoUndeniable – Live At Blues Alley (CDr copy) ... CD
High Note, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sweet live set from guitarist Pat Martino – recorded with a nice gritty feel, and just the right blend of organ and tenor that Pat would get on his Prestige Records dates of the 60s! The tracks are all nice and long, with the kind of open, freewheeling energy that we love back in the 60s soul jazz days when Martino got his start – and as on some other excellent recent dates, the move back to basics works perfectly for Pat's deep talents on the guitar – augmented nicely here by organ lines form Tony Monaco, and some especially tight tenor from Eric Alexander. The group's completed by drummer Jeff Tain Watts – and titles include "Lean Years", "Inside Out", "Side Effect", "Goin To A Meeting", and "Double Play". CD

✨✧ Charles MingusMe Myself An Eye/Something Like A Bird ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1978/1980. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two late albums from Charles Mingus – back to back on a single CD! Me Myself An Eye is complicated later work from Mingus – a great illustration of the way his power to command a large ensemble never wavered as the years went on! The album features two different large groups of players – filled with modernists young and old – including Ricky Ford, George Coleman, and Michael Brecker ont enors; Ronni Cuber and Pepper Adams on baritone; Randy Brecker and Jack Walrath on trumpets; Lee Konitz on alto, Larry Coryell on guitar, Slide Hampton on trombone, and Eddie Gomez on bass. Side one features the 30 minute track "Three Worlds Of Drums", and side 2 contains a remake of "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting", plus "Devil Woman" and "Carolyn Keki Mingus". Something Like A Bird is one of the last Mingus albums ever recorded – large group material that's a lot more complex than his work from the 60s, performed by a variety of players from old and recent years, including Lee Konitz, Pepper Adams, George Coleman, Joe Chambers, Eddie Gomez, Ronnie Cuber, and others. The long title track is split up over 2 sides of the LP, and the remaining piece of the second side is given over to "Farewell Farwell". CD
