A much-needed look at the amazing underground jazz scene in LA – the richly creative spiritual and avant underground that flourished strongly in the 60s, 70s, and 80s! Although the city's best known for its cool jazz of the 50s, there's an even greater amount of left-field jazz that's come from LA – work that rivals eastern scenes like the AACM in Chicago or loft jazz world in 70s New York – but even more righteous and spiritual overall! The book does a great job of laying the groundwork for this scene to emerge – and offers an incredible amount of detail on its evolution – with an especially focused look at Horace Tapscott and his Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, as well as some of the artists who recorded for Nimbus Records. Plus, this updated edition does a wonderful job of showing the continuing legacy of the music well into the 21st century – and also includes an appendix by Roberto Miranda, for a larger volume running well over 420 pages! An incredible guide to sound library music around the world – one that features artwork from countless different labels, and brief notes on their history and output! The package is quite unique – not really a discography, not really an art book – but kind of a mix of both – and the only resource so far we've seen for tracking down the elusive musical gems that have come out of sound library sources of the 50s, 60s, and 70s! The book lists hundreds of records from 230 different labels – each presented alphabetically, with information and history on each label – alongside a huge amount of color images of the covers that are as beautiful as the music contained within. Trunk Records head Jonny Trunk put the whole thing together – and this huge second edition is twice as big as the first – really showing the full scope of new information on some of the more obscure labels that have come into play in recent years. 248 pages, hardcover, full color – and beautiful! A very cool book – and way different than you might expect from the title – as the discography doesn't only focus on contemporary ambient albums, but instead traces a history of moody sounds from the late 50s onwards! The publication is one of the most interesting Japanese discographies we've seen so far – filled with an evolving conception of ambient sounds, through jazz, acid folk, kraut rock, electronic music, and a host of other styles that predate Brian Eno's 70s experiments in ambient – and all the many Eno-inspired projects to follow – with chapters on John Cage, Joe Meek, Gigi Masin, Pauline Oliveros, Iasos, Walter Marchetti, Luc Ferrari, Lol Coxhill, Joanna Brouk, Sun Electric, Max Richter, and dozens of other artists. As with most Japanese discographies, the book has images of record covers, with dates, labels, and artists in English – plus a small review in Japanese – and even if you can't understand that last bit, you can still understand plenty from the way the book breaks down the music into various years and styles. This expanded edition is even better than the previous one – with chapters that include Space Age records of the 50s and 60s, Meditation records of the 70s, Post Modern records of the late 70s and 80s, Chill Scape records of the early 90s, Drone/Improvisation records of the late 90s/early 00s, and a Diversity section of more recent records. A beautiful book, and one that's almost as enjoyable as finding a box of rare records from the funk and soul underground of the 60s and 70s! The book is a huge overview of funk and soul from Ohio – starting with the early 60s, and running up to the big years of Ohio funk that rose on the charts into the 80s – presented here with information on 1700 different artists, 500 record companies, and over 3000 different albums – many presented with label scans and other visual information too! Both the Numero Group and soul historian Dante Carfagna are no strangers to the Ohio scene – as they've both plumbed the depths in recent decades, and have given us no end of fantastic discoveries that we never would have heard otherwise – really wonderful material from Cinncinnatti, Cleveland, Columbus, and other cities – all music that makes up the rich array of scenes and talents presented in the book. There's a very visual presentation to the book – with over 125 pages alone of rare photos, posters, and other images from the scene – next to another huge chapter that features almost 80 more pages of rare record label scans and covers! Next to that, you'll find chapters that list different Ohio record labels, along with releases; Ohio pressing plants and recording studios; and even Ohio funk and soul artists who recorded for non-Ohio and national labels, and some who made no records at all! We love the presentation – as the huge book is very image and information-heavy, with no essays or other writing at all – beautifully done in a hardcover volume, with 350 pages – super-hefty, and a great gateway to continued digging for rare material from this surprising hotbed of funk and soul. A beautiful book of images – not just for record lovers, but for all fans of sonic delights – as the author starts from the earliest days of recorded sound, then moves up through decades of representation – following images of record players, radios, cassette tapes, albums, 78 record sleeves, and dozens of other variations on the way that sound and music is presented! The heavy volume is an artbook first, but also has plenty of history in the mix – and the author presents images from around the world, in a way that really gets away from the Anglo-centric evolution of the record industry – coming up with all sorts of weird images of record scenes in so many different locations, mixed with stark photographs, blueprints, and other images too. Journalist Philip Clark spent a good deal of time with piano legend Dave Brubeck in his later years – then did a really wonderful job of going backwards, and putting together all the many pieces of Dave's musical puzzle! There's no doubt that Brubeck was one of the most important jazz musicians of the 20th Century – especially in the 50s and 60s – but Clark also really helps us understand why that is, and paints a picture of Brubeck's music and influence that stretch far beyond the smaller world of modern jazz! The hardcover volume is 445 pages, with some black and white images – and covers key moments of Brubeck's career in great depth. Book

About 30 years back, Joseph Lanza first turned us on to an amazing array of 60s easy listening records that we'd never fully given their due – and here, he continues the journey, but with a key shift into the world of psychedelia too! The book is a wonderful look at the way that easy listening and instrumental pop tried to stay vibrant in the second half of the 60s – and it follows the way that easy artists of the time were picking up the aesthetics of the younger generation in a variety of ways – not just doing cover versions of songs by The Beatles and Stones, but also going for trippier artwork on their album covers, and using more unusual studio techniques in production – all in ways that made for a huge legacy of very groovy records! At times, things would even move backwards – as older songs from the early part of the century were given a mod spin for the 60s generation – and the range of topics covered here is as wonderful as Lanza's presentation. The book is a very cool 7" square format – with lots of album reproductions and great graphics, plus a list of 50 essential records at the back – served up in a softcover volume that's 237 pages in length. A mighty hefty set of photos of Roxy Music on stage – served up in a massive oversize book that's filled with fan photos from the early days onward! Photographer Jocelyn Fiske has a lifetime love of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry – and managed to sneak some great shots of the group in the early 70s, then get very serious once their comeback years hit in the later part of the decade – served up here in hundreds of oversized, full color shots of the new romantic years, later solo Bryan Ferry, and even the 21st Century reunion as well! The images are striking – these are definitely not the polished shots of Ferry and the group on the album covers – and from the drenched look of Bryan on stage alone, the whole thing stands as a vivid testimony to the "work" that went into the music of Roxy! A guide to classical records, of sorts – but one that features older albums all picked by the well-known Japanese writer Haruki Murakami! Murakami is well-known as a lifetime lover of music, which comes through in his fiction, and which is almost more foregrounded in his essays – a body of work that's greatly expanded here – as Haruki presents full color images of treasured albums in his collection – mostly vinyl offerings from the 20th century, with a range of works that goes back to the early years of classical on mono LPs! Each cover image is presented with the label and date in English, and other details in Japanese – but you can easily use Google Translate on your phone to read the rest of these spare details, then set it to translate the longer essays that accompany the images. There's definitely more Japanese text here than in the "disc guides" we stock – but the images alone provided a great start to building a strong classical collection, guided by a true master.
