Cocteau TwinsTiny Dynamine/Echoes In A Shallow Bay (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
4AD, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
A wonderful pairing of two of our favorite records ever by this sublime British group – both records that were issued separately as 12" EP releases, but make a perfect pairing as a full length record like this! There's a clarity and focus to the music here that's often missing on other Cocteau projects of this vintage – this sharpness to the instrumental ideas, and very strong use of Liz Frazier's sublime wordless vocals in these tapestries of sound that cascade beautifully over these lush rhythm progressions. Things are nicely exotic, in all the best ways – and titles include "Plain Tiger", "Ribbed & Veined", "Pink Orange Red", "Melanolla", "Great Spangled Fritillary", and "Eggs & Their Shells". PixiesDoolittle 25 – B-Sides, Peel Sessions, & Demos (3CD set) ... CD
4AD, 1989. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99 26.98
A defining moment for The Pixies and rock music in general – given the loaded 25th anniversary edition it deserves here – with the classic original album, a 13 track CD of Peel Sessions and a 22 track set of demos in a 3CD set! Doolittle somehow delivers on the rawer, artier promise of Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim, while bringing in a tunefulness that the earlier album(s) just hinted at. Rock music just didn't sound like this in 1989, kids! Amazing stuff. Includes "Debaser", "Tame", "Here Comes Your Man", "La La Love You", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "I Bleed", "Hey", "Gouge Away" and more, plus Peel Sessions that include album tracks and other tracks like "Weird At My School", "Manta Ray", the slowed-down, moody "UK Surf" version of "Wave Of Mutilation", and 22 demo versions. 50 tracks on 3CDs! 4AD, 1984. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A genius project from the growing 4AD – a special set that brings together some of its best artists, in a format that often has them covering classic songs from the past with a heavy blend of Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance elements. Titles include "Song To The Siren", "Kangaroo", "The Last Ray", "Barramundi", "Another Day", and "A Single Wish". LP, Vinyl record album

Scott WalkerDrift ... CD
4AD, 2006. Used ... $7.99
A stunner from the legendary living ghost that is Scott Walker – possibly the most archly dramatic, unique and strangely alluring work he's ever done! Since Scott Walker albums have become once per decade events, a lot more is at stake with each one, and it's nothing short of amazing that he manages to get more and more exciting with each effort. The Drift finds Scott tackling obscure historical drama, his pop-operatic vibrato as chilling as ever – backed up by his long-relied upon backdrop of string arrangements, guitars, drums and keys – along with (way) off-kilter percussion. But the sounds made with those tried-and-true materials are often unprecedented, from Scott or anyone else on the planet. The voice wails with authority, the backing is often quiet and subtle until the ever-approaching gail swoops in and carries you away. We could probably write a book about this album (and someone undoubtably will) – so we'll leave you to pick it up and experience it for yourself! Tracks include "Cossacks Are", "Clara", "Jesse", "Jolson And Jones", "Cue", "Hand Me Ups", "Buzzers", "Psoriatic", "The Escape" and "A Lover Loves". CD
(In the original slipcover.)

Scott Walker & Sunn0)))Soused (180 gram pressing) ... LP
4AD, 2014. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
Incredible work from Scott Walker – maybe the best album so far in his revival stretch of the last few decades – and a set that has even more depth and power than the previous albums! The album's a collaboration with Sunn0))) – who provide these dark textures and sonic patterns that are extremely low-end – which leaves Walker's vocals plenty of space up top to unfurl with this lyrical power we haven't heard in years – and a range of expression that's almost operatic in nature – easily some of the boldest vocalizations we've ever heard from Scott – and that's saying a lot, given his incredible legacy since the 60s. The whole thing almost feels like one of the most perfectly-realized moment of Walker's darker later period – and although the group performs the music, it was all still written by Scott. Titles include "Brando", "Bull", "Herod 2014", "Fetish", and "Lullaby". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the original plastic outer sleeve.)

✨✧ Cocteau TwinsPink Opaque (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
4AD, 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-remembered set from The Cocteau Twins' sublime 80s run on the 4AD label – a set that was one of the duo's first American titles, culled together from some of their early singles and import EP releases! The song choices are wonderful – some of the most focused, expressive cuts from the first few Cocteau years – magical moments that have the wordless vocals of Liz Frazier carving out these really beautiful melodies – while lush keyboards and splashy rhythms fill in the background with that unique 4AD style of production. There's still never been anything like the group at this point over all the years that have past – and the album's filled with gems that include "Wax & Wane", "Pearly Dewdrop Drops", "From The Flagstones", "Lorelei", "Aikea Guinea", "Pepper Tree", and "Musette & Drums". Rough Trade/Captured Tracks, 1985. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
An overlooked 80s pop masterpiece – the first full album from The Apartments, one of the most blue-tinged groups of the decade! Ex-Go Between Peter Milton Walsh heads the group, which is a showcase for his wonderfully-penned songs – unique little tracks that show his Australian roots, but which also share links with some of the smartest UK pop of the period – no surprise, given the original release of the record on Rough Trade. There's a subtle genius here, but one that grabs you right away – given Walsh's distinct vocals, and the album's blend of jangle pop guitars with sadder elements like cello and flugelhorn, which help push things slightly towards 4AD territory, but without any goth. The whole thing's wonderful – one of those records we've loved for decades, from the moment we first heard it – and titles include "Sunset Hotel", "Mr Somewhere", "All The Birthdays", "Great Fool", "Speechless With Tuesday", "Cannot Tell The Days Apart", and "Lazarus Lazarus". Beautiful double-length package features almost a whole extra album – early singles, demos, and more – with tracks that include "All You Wanted", "Fever Elsewhere", "Refugee", "Help", and "Nobody Like You". Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Three – River Run Thee (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Constellation (Canada), 2015. New Copy ... $13.99 25.98
Maybe the most dense, most complex work we've heard from Matana Roberts to date – a unusual effort that blends together her own instrumental passages with sound samples recorded during a wintertime ramble through the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana! Roberts moves away from her previous group efforts, to hit even more experimental sounds here – which include her own alto saxophone lines, plus work on a Korg Monotron, an early 1900s upright piano, and even a bit of vocalizations too – all taken at a level that's way beyond jazz, and which has elements of found sound mixing with processed instrumental passages, and even some odd snippets of classic American songs. The effort comes off sounding as if an avant jazz album were recorded with an older 4AD aesthetic – with all the dense sonic structures that might imply – and the whole thing's definitely one more reason to keep your eyes focused on Roberts' genius in years to come!
