Scott WalkerChildhood Of A Leader ... LP
4AD, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 24.98
One of the most amazing records we've heard from Scott Walker in years – a set that even stands out from the incredible sounds of his revived career in the past decade or two! Walker's been a dark artist during all of those times – far moodier than any of his work of the 60s or 70s might make you expect – but here, he steps sideways a bit, and casts his shadow in a slightly different light – working with larger orchestrations on the music, which was designed as the soundtrack to the film in the title – although the album has more than enough appeal to Walker fans on its own! The big difference this time is that the setting is instrumental – a large batch of strings and woodwinds conducted by Mark Warman, with all the moody currents that Walker has given us in his music from Tilt onwards – but reflected here without those trademark vocals, in ways that put even more emphasis on Scott's tonal conception of the different instrumental elements. Longtime studio partner Peter Walsh produced the set with Walker – and the whole thing really lives up to the legacy of haunting sounds that began with their collaboration on Climate Of The Hunter. ✨✧ Dead Can DanceSpleen & Ideal ... CD
4AD, 1985. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The record where Dead Can Dance really puts the whole thing together – and finds that amazing sound that still makes them one of the best things ever to come from the 4AD Records label! The strings are stepped up nicely – those cello and violin lines that helped bring a real depth to the music, and also fold back to create the kind of ancient currents that worked so well with their evocative vocals and earthier percussion bits – all layered in perfect 4AD production that makes the music resonate even more strongly overall. And maybe even more amazingly, these guys manage to do the whole thing without ever resorting to any of the goth cliches of their contemporaries – or the countless bands they inspired – a very careful, very special balance – on titles that include "The Cardinal Sin", "Mesmerism", "De Profundis", "Indoctrination", "Avatar", "Advent", and "Enigma Of The Absolute". Johann JohanssonOrphee ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A beautiful re-interpretation of the myth of Orpheus – handled here by composer Johann Johannsson in a beautiful style that recalls some of the best Deutsche Grammophon projects from Max Richter! The composer plays a variety of keyboards – including electric and pipe organ – in shifting settings that either feature the American Contemporary Ensemble's strings, the cello of Hildur Guonadottir, the AIR Lyndhurst String Orchestra, or the shifting Theater Of Voices conducted by Paul Hillier – all musical elements which are sampled and used carefully alongside Johannsson's keyboards and a bit of electronics – with results that seem to take the generation of 4AD and advance it more than a few steps with a new sort of complexity and emotional depth. The blend of the compositional and personal here is wonderful – maybe even more so than in Richter's work – and titles include "A Pile Of Dust", "Flight From The City", "The Radiant City", "Fragment II", "The Burning Mountain", "Good Morning Midnight", and "Orphic Hymn". Kenji KawaiGhost In The Shell ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1995. New Copy ... $25.99
Surprisingly beautiful sounds from the original Ghost In The Shell feature film – music that's far more organic and acoustic than you might expect, and much more subtle than the usual anime soundtrack! Many moments here almost feel like outtakes from some 80s session for 4AD – maybe more interesting percussion or production passages from a This Mortal Coil project, mixed with some Dead Can Dance-like elements of vocals or pan-global references – yet all done without any sense of cliche, and a really rich vibe that makes this one way more than the usual "game music" score. Titles include "Ghosthack", "Puppetmaster", "Virtual Crime", "Ghost City", "Nightstalker", "Floating Museum", and "Ghostdive". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pearls Before SwineBalaklava ... LP
ESP, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second album by Tom Rapp's legendary group Pearls Before Swine – and a haunting batch of tracks that is far and away one of our favorite rock albums of the 60s! The style of the music is incredible – a dark blend of rock and folk, with slight avant influences, in a style that's influenced countless groups in later years, most famously some of the British acts on 4AD. Rapp's vision and vocals are instantly captivating – sad and moody but never self-pitying, with a sound that's as striking as the production of the album's jagged musical backings. Includes the tracks "Translucent Carriages", "I Saw the World", "Lepers and Roses", and a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes insert. Cover has some wear & a split bottom seam. Vinyl plays with clicks & crackles.)

✨✧ Popol VuhSei Still Wisse Ich Bin (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Innovative Communication/Wah Wah (Spain), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the most spiritual albums ever recorded by Popol Vuh – recorded with a huge choir on the first track, which really sets a lofty sound for the rest of the session! The music is a fantastic mix of earthy, organic elements and more heavenly sounds – served up by the core trio of Florian Fricke on piano, Renate Knaup on vocal, and Daniel Fichelschner on guitar and drums – but processed heavily throughout, so that the familiar elements are often abstracted into dark washes of moody sound! In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the 4AD generation – even though most of those artists would have never admitted it at the time – and is more proof that the hip German cats of the 70s were always light years ahead of the rest. Titles include "Wehe Khorazin", "Garten Der Gemeinschaft", "Las Los", "Gemeinsam Assen Sie Das Brot", and "Und Als Er Sah Es Geht Dem Ende Zu". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 500!)
