Express RisingFixed Rope ... CD
Numero, 2015. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
A moodier, mellower record than usual from Express Rising – a set that's got a laidback, ethereal feel that really fits the image on the cover! The style here is less the classic funk of ER's debut, and more a moody blend of echoey guitar lines and slow-moving, watery rhythms – all in a instrumental style that recalls some of the best early Durutti Column albums on Factory Records, or maybe some of the more cerebral moments during the glory days of 4AD! The group's listed as a trio this time around – but in typical oblique fashion, we're not sure who's doing what – and how – but the resultant sound is mighty nice, and a real change than previous records. Titles include "Spirit Darts", "Perishable Looks", "Fixed Rope", "Names & Numbers", "Corners Of Your Eyes", "Long Distance Photo", and "Sycamore". CD
Also available Fixed Rope ... LP 16.99

MARRSPump Up The Volume (long, bonus beat, inst)/Anitina ... 12-inch
4th & Broadway, 1987. Very Good- (pic cover)... $1.99
An offshoot of the 4AD rock scene from the UK, this number sampled Rakim from "Paid In Full" to great effect – and it made quite a bit of sense that the track was issued on 4th & Broadway in the US (probably also a legal move, so that the label wouldn't sue 4AD for copping a sample from one of their artists! The record features a bit of scratching by CJ Mackintosh, with a bubbly beat that made it huge on both sides of the Atlantic. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Talk TalkLaughing Stock ... LP
Polydor, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
An incredible swan song from Talk Talk – a group that nobody would have guessed would go in this direction from the early years of their catchy crossover new romantic pop! The sound here is something else entirely – a fully-formed extension of the ideas they'd been exploring on Spirit Of Eden – in these beautiful soundscapes guided by Mark Hollis and the rest of the group – and filled in with work from a range of jazz and string players, including the legendary Brit jazz trumpeter Henry Lowther! There's a sense of denseness and texture that really marks the music – and a lot more warmth than similar 80s projects that might have come from 4AD, Factory, or ZTT – instead almost a "new subtlety" that had a huge influence on so many other groups to come. Tracks include "Myrrhman", "Ascension Day", "After The Flood", "Taphead", "New Grass", and "Runeii". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousStill In A Dream – A Story Of Shoegaze 1988 to 1995 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5 CDs ... $42.99
Psychedelia meets British pop – in a really special musical moment that's forever come to be known as shoegaze! The work here comes from a time when the UK scene was really moving past punk rock, and starting to let its guitarists open up in the kind of longer, fuzzy solos that were big in the late 60s – along with all the sort of heady production modes that made such music sound even better, but always with the kind of leaner, more focused lessons learned from the post-punk years! The result is a special sort of sound that can trip out as needed, but never get too overindulgent to lose the tune – the balance that first came to play on the early singles of Creation or 4AD, then found flower in so many other UK groups as the years went on. These glorious years are presented here in a big 5CD set – one that comes in a book-styled package with loads of notes on the music – alongside 87 tracks by artists who include Blow Up, The Honey Buzzards, Submarine, Bailter Space, The Curtain Society, Mercury Rev, An April March, Spacemen 3, The Hinnies, Spiritualized, Moose, Spitfire, Moonshake, Bark Psychosis, AR Kane, Jesus & Mary Chain, Lush, Ride, The Darkside, Velocity Girl, Bleach, Catehrine Wheel, See See Rider, Cranes, Chapterhouse, Telescopes, Sun Dial, Medicine, Sweet Jesus, Luna, Astrobrite, and many more! ✨✧ Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Three – River Run Thee ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most dense, most complex work we've heard from Matana Roberts to date – a unusual effort that blends together her own instrumental passages with sound samples recorded during a wintertime ramble through the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana! Roberts moves away from her previous group efforts, to hit even more experimental sounds here – which include her own alto saxophone lines, plus work on a Korg Monotron, an early 1900s upright piano, and even a bit of vocalizations too – all taken at a level that's way beyond jazz, and which has elements of found sound mixing with processed instrumental passages, and even some odd snippets of classic American songs. The effort comes off sounding as if an avant jazz album were recorded with an older 4AD aesthetic – with all the dense sonic structures that might imply – and the whole thing's definitely one more reason to keep your eyes focused on Roberts' genius in years to come! ✨✧ ApartmentsEvening Visits (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Rough Trade/Captured Tracks, 1985. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked 80s pop masterpiece – the first full album from The Apartments, one of the most blue-tinged groups of the decade! Ex-Go Between Peter Milton Walsh heads the group, which is a showcase for his wonderfully-penned songs – unique little tracks that show his Australian roots, but which also share links with some of the smartest UK pop of the period – no surprise, given the original release of the record on Rough Trade. There's a subtle genius here, but one that grabs you right away – given Walsh's distinct vocals, and the album's blend of jangle pop guitars with sadder elements like cello and flugelhorn, which help push things slightly towards 4AD territory, but without any goth. The whole thing's wonderful – one of those records we've loved for decades, from the moment we first heard it – and titles include "Sunset Hotel", "Mr Somewhere", "All The Birthdays", "Great Fool", "Speechless With Tuesday", "Cannot Tell The Days Apart", and "Lazarus Lazarus". Beautiful double-length package features almost a whole extra album – early singles, demos, and more – with tracks that include "All You Wanted", "Fever Elsewhere", "Refugee", "Help", and "Nobody Like You". LP, Vinyl record album
