Dead Can DanceDead Can Dance ... LP
4AD (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
The start of a wonderful run of sounds – the debut album from Dead Can Dance, and a set that's maybe more linked to the larger world of 4AD Records than some of their later material! All the moody touches we love are already in place – those amazing ancient-sounding vocals of Lisa Gerrard, and that blend of exotic percussion and European string instrumentation that works surprisingly well – yet there's also elements that echo a bit of the Factory Records groups, and maybe other 4AD work – stronger drum patterns at points, and maybe a bit more coldness in the production. That blend makes for a record that's a great step after hearing Joy Division or groups of that nature – and titles include "Musica Eternal", "A Passage In Time", "East Of Eden", "Threshold", "The Fatal Impact", "Fortune", and "Ocean". Dead Can DanceInto The Labyrinth ... LP
4AD, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.98
A record that seems to take Dead Can Dance even farther back into the past than ever before – not to the sound of their earliest years, but to a world of ancient musical elements that come together beautifully in their hands! The set is probably the most carefully-recorded the group ever gave us – and one of the most sensitive too – with spacious qualities that can let individual vocal or instrumental passages really resonate, while wider washes of sound come in to tie the whole thing together, but in a way that's greatly matured since the earlier years of 4AD. Lisa Gerrard's vocals are amazing – and titles include "The Carnival Is Over", "Ariadne", "Towards The Within", "Spirit", "Bird", and "How Fortunate The Man With None". LP, Vinyl record album

Dead Can DanceSpleen & Ideal ... LP
4AD, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
The record where Dead Can Dance really puts the whole thing together – and finds that amazing sound that still makes them one of the best things ever to come from the 4AD Records label! The strings are stepped up nicely – those cello and violin lines that helped bring a real depth to the music, and also fold back to create the kind of ancient currents that worked so well with their evocative vocals and earthier percussion bits – all layered in perfect 4AD production that makes the music resonate even more strongly overall. And maybe even more amazingly, these guys manage to do the whole thing without ever resorting to any of the goth cliches of their contemporaries – or the countless bands they inspired – a very careful, very special balance – on titles that include "The Cardinal Sin", "Mesmerism", "De Profundis", "Indoctrination", "Avatar", "Advent", and "Enigma Of The Absolute". ✨✧ Scott WalkerChildhood Of A Leader ... CD
4AD, 2016. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of the most amazing records we've heard from Scott Walker in years – a set that even stands out from the incredible sounds of his revived career in the past decade or two! Walker's been a dark artist during all of those times – far moodier than any of his work of the 60s or 70s might make you expect – but here, he steps sideways a bit, and casts his shadow in a slightly different light – working with larger orchestrations on the music, which was designed as the soundtrack to the film in the title – although the album has more than enough appeal to Walker fans on its own! The big difference this time is that the setting is instrumental – a large batch of strings and woodwinds conducted by Mark Warman, with all the moody currents that Walker has given us in his music from Tilt onwards – but reflected here without those trademark vocals, in ways that put even more emphasis on Scott's tonal conception of the different instrumental elements. Longtime studio partner Peter Walsh produced the set with Walker – and the whole thing really lives up to the legacy of haunting sounds that began with their collaboration on Climate Of The Hunter. ✨✧ Cocteau TwinsPink Opaque ... LP
4AD/Relativity, 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-remembered set from The Cocteau Twins' sublime 80s run on the 4AD label – a set that was one of the duo's first American titles, culled together from some of their early singles and import EP releases! The song choices are wonderful – some of the most focused, expressive cuts from the first few Cocteau years – magical moments that have the wordless vocals of Liz Frazier carving out these really beautiful melodies – while lush keyboards and splashy rhythms fill in the background with that unique 4AD style of production. There's still never been anything like the group at this point over all the years that have past – and the album's filled with gems that include "Wax & Wane", "Pearly Dewdrop Drops", "From The Flagstones", "Lorelei", "Aikea Guinea", "Pepper Tree", and "Musette & Drums". VariousStill In A Dream – A Story Of Shoegaze 1988 to 1995 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5 CDs ... $42.99
Psychedelia meets British pop – in a really special musical moment that's forever come to be known as shoegaze! The work here comes from a time when the UK scene was really moving past punk rock, and starting to let its guitarists open up in the kind of longer, fuzzy solos that were big in the late 60s – along with all the sort of heady production modes that made such music sound even better, but always with the kind of leaner, more focused lessons learned from the post-punk years! The result is a special sort of sound that can trip out as needed, but never get too overindulgent to lose the tune – the balance that first came to play on the early singles of Creation or 4AD, then found flower in so many other UK groups as the years went on. These glorious years are presented here in a big 5CD set – one that comes in a book-styled package with loads of notes on the music – alongside 87 tracks by artists who include Blow Up, The Honey Buzzards, Submarine, Bailter Space, The Curtain Society, Mercury Rev, An April March, Spacemen 3, The Hinnies, Spiritualized, Moose, Spitfire, Moonshake, Bark Psychosis, AR Kane, Jesus & Mary Chain, Lush, Ride, The Darkside, Velocity Girl, Bleach, Catehrine Wheel, See See Rider, Cranes, Chapterhouse, Telescopes, Sun Dial, Medicine, Sweet Jesus, Luna, Astrobrite, and many more! ✨✧ Talk TalkLaughing Stock ... LP
Polydor, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible swan song from Talk Talk – a group that nobody would have guessed would go in this direction from the early years of their catchy crossover new romantic pop! The sound here is something else entirely – a fully-formed extension of the ideas they'd been exploring on Spirit Of Eden – in these beautiful soundscapes guided by Mark Hollis and the rest of the group – and filled in with work from a range of jazz and string players, including the legendary Brit jazz trumpeter Henry Lowther! There's a sense of denseness and texture that really marks the music – and a lot more warmth than similar 80s projects that might have come from 4AD, Factory, or ZTT – instead almost a "new subtlety" that had a huge influence on so many other groups to come. Tracks include "Myrrhman", "Ascension Day", "After The Flood", "Taphead", "New Grass", and "Runeii". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Express RisingFixed Rope ... CD
Numero, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A moodier, mellower record than usual from Express Rising – a set that's got a laidback, ethereal feel that really fits the image on the cover! The style here is less the classic funk of ER's debut, and more a moody blend of echoey guitar lines and slow-moving, watery rhythms – all in a instrumental style that recalls some of the best early Durutti Column albums on Factory Records, or maybe some of the more cerebral moments during the glory days of 4AD! The group's listed as a trio this time around – but in typical oblique fashion, we're not sure who's doing what – and how – but the resultant sound is mighty nice, and a real change than previous records. Titles include "Spirit Darts", "Perishable Looks", "Fixed Rope", "Names & Numbers", "Corners Of Your Eyes", "Long Distance Photo", and "Sycamore". CD
