Dead Can DanceInto The Labyrinth ... CD
4AD, 1993. Used ... $3.99
A record that seems to take Dead Can Dance even farther back into the past than ever before – not to the sound of their earliest years, but to a world of ancient musical elements that come together beautifully in their hands! The set is probably the most carefully-recorded the group ever gave us – and one of the most sensitive too – with spacious qualities that can let individual vocal or instrumental passages really resonate, while wider washes of sound come in to tie the whole thing together, but in a way that's greatly matured since the earlier years of 4AD. Lisa Gerrard's vocals are amazing – and titles include "The Carnival Is Over", "Ariadne", "Towards The Within", "Spirit", "Bird", and "How Fortunate The Man With None". CD

Scott WalkerChildhood Of A Leader ... LP
4AD, 2016. New Copy ... $22.99 24.98
One of the most amazing records we've heard from Scott Walker in years – a set that even stands out from the incredible sounds of his revived career in the past decade or two! Walker's been a dark artist during all of those times – far moodier than any of his work of the 60s or 70s might make you expect – but here, he steps sideways a bit, and casts his shadow in a slightly different light – working with larger orchestrations on the music, which was designed as the soundtrack to the film in the title – although the album has more than enough appeal to Walker fans on its own! The big difference this time is that the setting is instrumental – a large batch of strings and woodwinds conducted by Mark Warman, with all the moody currents that Walker has given us in his music from Tilt onwards – but reflected here without those trademark vocals, in ways that put even more emphasis on Scott's tonal conception of the different instrumental elements. Longtime studio partner Peter Walsh produced the set with Walker – and the whole thing really lives up to the legacy of haunting sounds that began with their collaboration on Climate Of The Hunter. Johann JohanssonOrphee ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A beautiful re-interpretation of the myth of Orpheus – handled here by composer Johann Johannsson in a beautiful style that recalls some of the best Deutsche Grammophon projects from Max Richter! The composer plays a variety of keyboards – including electric and pipe organ – in shifting settings that either feature the American Contemporary Ensemble's strings, the cello of Hildur Guonadottir, the AIR Lyndhurst String Orchestra, or the shifting Theater Of Voices conducted by Paul Hillier – all musical elements which are sampled and used carefully alongside Johannsson's keyboards and a bit of electronics – with results that seem to take the generation of 4AD and advance it more than a few steps with a new sort of complexity and emotional depth. The blend of the compositional and personal here is wonderful – maybe even more so than in Richter's work – and titles include "A Pile Of Dust", "Flight From The City", "The Radiant City", "Fragment II", "The Burning Mountain", "Good Morning Midnight", and "Orphic Hymn". VariousStill In A Dream – A Story Of Shoegaze 1988 to 1995 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5 CDs ... $34.99
Psychedelia meets British pop – in a really special musical moment that's forever come to be known as shoegaze! The work here comes from a time when the UK scene was really moving past punk rock, and starting to let its guitarists open up in the kind of longer, fuzzy solos that were big in the late 60s – along with all the sort of heady production modes that made such music sound even better, but always with the kind of leaner, more focused lessons learned from the post-punk years! The result is a special sort of sound that can trip out as needed, but never get too overindulgent to lose the tune – the balance that first came to play on the early singles of Creation or 4AD, then found flower in so many other UK groups as the years went on. These glorious years are presented here in a big 5CD set – one that comes in a book-styled package with loads of notes on the music – alongside 87 tracks by artists who include Blow Up, The Honey Buzzards, Submarine, Bailter Space, The Curtain Society, Mercury Rev, An April March, Spacemen 3, The Hinnies, Spiritualized, Moose, Spitfire, Moonshake, Bark Psychosis, AR Kane, Jesus & Mary Chain, Lush, Ride, The Darkside, Velocity Girl, Bleach, Catehrine Wheel, See See Rider, Cranes, Chapterhouse, Telescopes, Sun Dial, Medicine, Sweet Jesus, Luna, Astrobrite, and many more! ✨✧ Pearls Before SwineBalaklava (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
ESP/Get Back (Italy), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second album by Tom Rapp's legendary group Pearls Before Swine – and a haunting batch of tracks that is far and away one of our favorite rock albums of the 60s! The style of the music is incredible – a dark blend of rock and folk, with slight avant influences, in a style that's influenced countless groups in later years, most famously some of the British acts on 4AD. Rapp's vision and vocals are instantly captivating – sad and moody but never self-pitying, with a sound that's as striking as the production of the album's jagged musical backings. Includes the tracks "Translucent Carriages", "I Saw the World", "Lepers and Roses", and a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". CD
