Dead Can DanceDead Can Dance ... CD
4AD (UK), 1984. Used ... $3.99
The start of a wonderful run of sounds – the debut album from Dead Can Dance, and a set that's maybe more linked to the larger world of 4AD Records than some of their later material! All the moody touches we love are already in place – those amazing ancient-sounding vocals of Lisa Gerrard, and that blend of exotic percussion and European string instrumentation that works surprisingly well – yet there's also elements that echo a bit of the Factory Records groups, and maybe other 4AD work – stronger drum patterns at points, and maybe a bit more coldness in the production. That blend makes for a record that's a great step after hearing Joy Division or groups of that nature – and titles include "Musica Eternal", "A Passage In Time", "East Of Eden", "Threshold", "The Fatal Impact", "Fortune", and "Ocean". ✨✧ Dead Can DanceInto The Labyrinth ... CD
4AD, 1993. Used ... $3.99
A record that seems to take Dead Can Dance even farther back into the past than ever before – not to the sound of their earliest years, but to a world of ancient musical elements that come together beautifully in their hands! The set is probably the most carefully-recorded the group ever gave us – and one of the most sensitive too – with spacious qualities that can let individual vocal or instrumental passages really resonate, while wider washes of sound come in to tie the whole thing together, but in a way that's greatly matured since the earlier years of 4AD. Lisa Gerrard's vocals are amazing – and titles include "The Carnival Is Over", "Ariadne", "Towards The Within", "Spirit", "Bird", and "How Fortunate The Man With None". CD

Scott WalkerChildhood Of A Leader ... LP
4AD, 2016. New Copy ... $22.99 24.98
One of the most amazing records we've heard from Scott Walker in years – a set that even stands out from the incredible sounds of his revived career in the past decade or two! Walker's been a dark artist during all of those times – far moodier than any of his work of the 60s or 70s might make you expect – but here, he steps sideways a bit, and casts his shadow in a slightly different light – working with larger orchestrations on the music, which was designed as the soundtrack to the film in the title – although the album has more than enough appeal to Walker fans on its own! The big difference this time is that the setting is instrumental – a large batch of strings and woodwinds conducted by Mark Warman, with all the moody currents that Walker has given us in his music from Tilt onwards – but reflected here without those trademark vocals, in ways that put even more emphasis on Scott's tonal conception of the different instrumental elements. Longtime studio partner Peter Walsh produced the set with Walker – and the whole thing really lives up to the legacy of haunting sounds that began with their collaboration on Climate Of The Hunter. ✨✧ Cocteau TwinsPink Opaque ... LP
4AD/Relativity, 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-remembered set from The Cocteau Twins' sublime 80s run on the 4AD label – a set that was one of the duo's first American titles, culled together from some of their early singles and import EP releases! The song choices are wonderful – some of the most focused, expressive cuts from the first few Cocteau years – magical moments that have the wordless vocals of Liz Frazier carving out these really beautiful melodies – while lush keyboards and splashy rhythms fill in the background with that unique 4AD style of production. There's still never been anything like the group at this point over all the years that have past – and the album's filled with gems that include "Wax & Wane", "Pearly Dewdrop Drops", "From The Flagstones", "Lorelei", "Aikea Guinea", "Pepper Tree", and "Musette & Drums". Eighteenth Street Lounge/4AD, 1996/1999. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking mix of tunes – early work by Thievery Corp, one of the best remix/producer teams of the past 10 years! The Thieves have a huge bag of influences to dip into – one that includes bossa grooves, easy melodies, and 70s electric funk, nearly all of which seem to come into play at one moment or another on many of the album's tracks. There's also a nice dubbed-out quality to the album – making it a downtempo classic with a really deep feel. Titles include "The Oscillator", "Interlude", "The Glass Bead Game", "Incident At Gate 7", and "Shaolin Satellite". CD

✨✧ Dead Can DanceSpleen & Ideal ... CD
4AD, 1985. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The record where Dead Can Dance really puts the whole thing together – and finds that amazing sound that still makes them one of the best things ever to come from the 4AD Records label! The strings are stepped up nicely – those cello and violin lines that helped bring a real depth to the music, and also fold back to create the kind of ancient currents that worked so well with their evocative vocals and earthier percussion bits – all layered in perfect 4AD production that makes the music resonate even more strongly overall. And maybe even more amazingly, these guys manage to do the whole thing without ever resorting to any of the goth cliches of their contemporaries – or the countless bands they inspired – a very careful, very special balance – on titles that include "The Cardinal Sin", "Mesmerism", "De Profundis", "Indoctrination", "Avatar", "Advent", and "Enigma Of The Absolute". Johann JohanssonOrphee ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A beautiful re-interpretation of the myth of Orpheus – handled here by composer Johann Johannsson in a beautiful style that recalls some of the best Deutsche Grammophon projects from Max Richter! The composer plays a variety of keyboards – including electric and pipe organ – in shifting settings that either feature the American Contemporary Ensemble's strings, the cello of Hildur Guonadottir, the AIR Lyndhurst String Orchestra, or the shifting Theater Of Voices conducted by Paul Hillier – all musical elements which are sampled and used carefully alongside Johannsson's keyboards and a bit of electronics – with results that seem to take the generation of 4AD and advance it more than a few steps with a new sort of complexity and emotional depth. The blend of the compositional and personal here is wonderful – maybe even more so than in Richter's work – and titles include "A Pile Of Dust", "Flight From The City", "The Radiant City", "Fragment II", "The Burning Mountain", "Good Morning Midnight", and "Orphic Hymn". VariousStill In A Dream – A Story Of Shoegaze 1988 to 1995 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5 CDs ... $34.99
Psychedelia meets British pop – in a really special musical moment that's forever come to be known as shoegaze! The work here comes from a time when the UK scene was really moving past punk rock, and starting to let its guitarists open up in the kind of longer, fuzzy solos that were big in the late 60s – along with all the sort of heady production modes that made such music sound even better, but always with the kind of leaner, more focused lessons learned from the post-punk years! The result is a special sort of sound that can trip out as needed, but never get too overindulgent to lose the tune – the balance that first came to play on the early singles of Creation or 4AD, then found flower in so many other UK groups as the years went on. These glorious years are presented here in a big 5CD set – one that comes in a book-styled package with loads of notes on the music – alongside 87 tracks by artists who include Blow Up, The Honey Buzzards, Submarine, Bailter Space, The Curtain Society, Mercury Rev, An April March, Spacemen 3, The Hinnies, Spiritualized, Moose, Spitfire, Moonshake, Bark Psychosis, AR Kane, Jesus & Mary Chain, Lush, Ride, The Darkside, Velocity Girl, Bleach, Catehrine Wheel, See See Rider, Cranes, Chapterhouse, Telescopes, Sun Dial, Medicine, Sweet Jesus, Luna, Astrobrite, and many more! ✨✧ Birthday PartyPrayers On Fire ... LP
Missing Link, 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ferocious, darkness-tinged postpunk from The Birthday Party! The caterwauling and howling fervor here is uber-influential to a lot darker indie/noise rock to come later in the decade. The band known by many for being Nick Cave's launching pad, but deserves many more props for the uncompromising genius they churned out in their time! Honking sax and churning organ suggest a diseased take on old blues & R&B, but the raucous energy and manic, frighteningly spat poetry is wholly unlike anything else at the time. Includes "Zoo Music Girl", "Cry", "Caper", "Nick The Stripper", "King Ink", "A Dead Song", "Yard" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing on 4AD, including the printed inner sleeve.)
