Cocteau TwinsHead Over Heels (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
4AD (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.98
Seminal early work from The Cocteau Twins – the kind of record that made the group almost a genre unto themselves – even though so many later artists tried to copy their sound and style! The record is years ahead of its time, especially when you consider that it was produced in the post-punk generation, at a point when less was often more – which was definitely the case with the core contributions to the record, before they were fluffed out into this amazing candyfloss of sonic textures, beats, and the mindblowing vocals of Elizabeth Fraser! The sound is as dark and obtuse as the cover image, but also completely lovely too – surprisingly catchy, even when you can't figure out the lyrics. Titles include "Sugar Hiccup", "When Mama Was Moth", "Musette & Drums", "The Tinderbox", "In The Gold Dust Rush", and "Glass Candle Grenades". LP, Vinyl record album

Cocteau TwinsTreasure ... LP
4AD (UK), 1984. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Cocteau Twins at the height of their powers – really honing in on that special blend of sounds that made their music so unique – while also finding a way to be even more tuneful than before! If you know the group, you'll know that their lyrics are always a bit obtuse, especially at this point in their career – but the amazing voice of Liz Fraser is so beautiful, and such a great contrast to the darker instrumental elements, there's an immediately uplifting feel to the tunes. The other great thing is the way that these guys dance right on the fringes of so many elements that could crush their music with pretension, yet never fall into the traps of their copycats – which makes for a mighty classic album throughout. Titles include "Otterley", "Donimo", "Amelia", "Beatrix", "Persephone", and "Pandora". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing – with inner sleeve.)

Circuit Des YeuxReaching for Indigo ... LP
Drag City, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99
An extremely beautiful set from singer Haley Fohr – a record that combines late folk singer/songwriter styles with some of the deeper, darker tones of the post-punk generation too – in a way that feels like Tom Rapp into 4AD, or maybe Robbie Basho into Diamanda Galas! The songs are maybe more understated than both of those 80s references might imply – handled with less of a self-conscious mode, with light instrumentation provided by various members of the Chicago scene – in this seamless blend of acoustic and electric elements, often at a level that makes it difficult to tell which instrument is which – or where the overall sound is coming from. But that's also part of the album's success – as it's got a slightly unsettling feel that really matches the vibe of the lyrics, even when the flow of Fohr's vocals can be melodically seductive. Titles include "Black Fly", "Philo", "Paper Bag", "A Story Of This World Part 2", "Geyser", "Falling Blonde", and "Brainshift". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johann JohanssonOrphee ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 2016. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful re-interpretation of the myth of Orpheus – handled here by composer Johann Johannsson in a beautiful style that recalls some of the best Deutsche Grammophon projects from Max Richter! The composer plays a variety of keyboards – including electric and pipe organ – in shifting settings that either feature the American Contemporary Ensemble's strings, the cello of Hildur Guonadottir, the AIR Lyndhurst String Orchestra, or the shifting Theater Of Voices conducted by Paul Hillier – all musical elements which are sampled and used carefully alongside Johannsson's keyboards and a bit of electronics – with results that seem to take the generation of 4AD and advance it more than a few steps with a new sort of complexity and emotional depth. The blend of the compositional and personal here is wonderful – maybe even more so than in Richter's work – and titles include "A Pile Of Dust", "Flight From The City", "The Radiant City", "Fragment II", "The Burning Mountain", "Good Morning Midnight", and "Orphic Hymn". Popol VuhSei Still Wisse Ich Bin (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Innovative Communication/Wah Wah (Spain), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Maybe one of the most spiritual albums ever recorded by Popol Vuh – recorded with a huge choir on the first track, which really sets a lofty sound for the rest of the session! The music is a fantastic mix of earthy, organic elements and more heavenly sounds – served up by the core trio of Florian Fricke on piano, Renate Knaup on vocal, and Daniel Fichelschner on guitar and drums – but processed heavily throughout, so that the familiar elements are often abstracted into dark washes of moody sound! In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the 4AD generation – even though most of those artists would have never admitted it at the time – and is more proof that the hip German cats of the 70s were always light years ahead of the rest. Titles include "Wehe Khorazin", "Garten Der Gemeinschaft", "Las Los", "Gemeinsam Assen Sie Das Brot", and "Und Als Er Sah Es Geht Dem Ende Zu". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 500!)

Tortusa & Inge BreisteinMind Vessel ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the deeper, darker sets we've heard from the Jazzland label in recent years – a set that blends the saxophone of Inge Weatherhead Breistein with lots of layered electronics – at a level that takes us back to our favorite records from the early days of the label! Things here are relatively abstract, with the core elements moved into darkly melodic territory that almost feels like a later more mature answer to sonic territory explored by ECM and 4AD in decades past – delivered here also as a statement to the studio talents of Tortusa, who produced the whole record. Titles include "Snow Mold", "Hopes", "Mind Vessel", "Keep Coming Back", "Corrosion Is A Natural Process", and "Ceiling Filled With Water". CD

✨✧ VariousStill In A Dream – A Story Of Shoegaze 1988 to 1995 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. Used 5 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Psychedelia meets British pop – in a really special musical moment that's forever come to be known as shoegaze! The work here comes from a time when the UK scene was really moving past punk rock, and starting to let its guitarists open up in the kind of longer, fuzzy solos that were big in the late 60s – along with all the sort of heady production modes that made such music sound even better, but always with the kind of leaner, more focused lessons learned from the post-punk years! The result is a special sort of sound that can trip out as needed, but never get too overindulgent to lose the tune – the balance that first came to play on the early singles of Creation or 4AD, then found flower in so many other UK groups as the years went on. These glorious years are presented here in a big 5CD set – one that comes in a book-styled package with loads of notes on the music – alongside 87 tracks by artists who include Blow Up, The Honey Buzzards, Submarine, Bailter Space, The Curtain Society, Mercury Rev, An April March, Spacemen 3, The Hinnies, Spiritualized, Moose, Spitfire, Moonshake, Bark Psychosis, AR Kane, Jesus & Mary Chain, Lush, Ride, The Darkside, Velocity Girl, Bleach, Catehrine Wheel, See See Rider, Cranes, Chapterhouse, Telescopes, Sun Dial, Medicine, Sweet Jesus, Luna, Astrobrite, and many more! ✨✧ Kenji KawaiGhost In The Shell ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1995. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Surprisingly beautiful sounds from the original Ghost In The Shell feature film – music that's far more organic and acoustic than you might expect, and much more subtle than the usual anime soundtrack! Many moments here almost feel like outtakes from some 80s session for 4AD – maybe more interesting percussion or production passages from a This Mortal Coil project, mixed with some Dead Can Dance-like elements of vocals or pan-global references – yet all done without any sense of cliche, and a really rich vibe that makes this one way more than the usual "game music" score. Titles include "Ghosthack", "Puppetmaster", "Virtual Crime", "Ghost City", "Nightstalker", "Floating Museum", and "Ghostdive". LP, Vinyl record album
