PixiesDoolittle 25 – B-Sides, Peel Sessions, & Demos (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
4AD, 1989. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $39.99 42.98
A defining moment for The Pixies and rock music in general – given the loaded 3LP 25th anniversary edition it deserves here – with the classic original album, plus bonus B-side tracks, a side of 1988 and 1989 Peel Sessions, and a full LP of rare demos! Doolittle itself is as revelatory as ever – somehow managing to deliver on the rawer, artier promise of Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim, while bringing in a tunefulness that the earlier album(s) just hinted at. Rock music just didn't sound like this in 1989, kids! Amazing stuff. Includes "Debaser", "Tame", "Here Comes Your Man", "La La Love You", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "I Bleed", "Hey", "Gouge Away" and more. Bonus material includes the B-sides "Manta Ray", "Weird At My School", "Bailey's Walk and others, Peel Sessions versions of "Tame", "Wave Of Mutilation", "Down To The Well" and others, demo versions of album tracks and more. Amazing! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Scott Walker & Sunn0)))Soused ... CD
4AD, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Scott Walker – maybe the best album so far in his revival stretch of the last few decades – and a set that has even more depth and power than the previous albums! The album's a collaboration with Sunn0))) – who provide these dark textures and sonic patterns that are extremely low-end – which leaves Walker's vocals plenty of space up top to unfurl with this lyrical power we haven't heard in years – and a range of expression that's almost operatic in nature – easily some of the boldest vocalizations we've ever heard from Scott – and that's saying a lot, given his incredible legacy since the 60s. The whole thing almost feels like one of the most perfectly-realized moment of Walker's darker later period – and although the group performs the music, it was all still written by Scott. Titles include "Brando", "Bull", "Herod 2014", "Fetish", and "Lullaby". CD

✨✧ ApartmentsEvening Visits (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Rough Trade/Captured Tracks, 1985. New Copy ... $13.99
An overlooked 80s pop masterpiece – the first full album from The Apartments, one of the most blue-tinged groups of the decade! Ex-Go Between Peter Milton Walsh heads the group, which is a showcase for his wonderfully-penned songs – unique little tracks that show his Australian roots, but which also share links with some of the smartest UK pop of the period – no surprise, given the original release of the record on Rough Trade. There's a subtle genius here, but one that grabs you right away – given Walsh's distinct vocals, and the album's blend of jangle pop guitars with sadder elements like cello and flugelhorn, which help push things slightly towards 4AD territory, but without any goth. The whole thing's wonderful – one of those records we've loved for decades, from the moment we first heard it – and titles include "Sunset Hotel", "Mr Somewhere", "All The Birthdays", "Great Fool", "Speechless With Tuesday", "Cannot Tell The Days Apart", and "Lazarus Lazarus". Beautiful double-length package features almost a whole extra album – early singles, demos, and more – with tracks that include "All You Wanted", "Fever Elsewhere", "Refugee", "Help", and "Nobody Like You". CD

✨✧ Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Three – River Run Thee (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Constellation (Canada), 2015. New Copy ... $18.99 25.98
Maybe the most dense, most complex work we've heard from Matana Roberts to date – a unusual effort that blends together her own instrumental passages with sound samples recorded during a wintertime ramble through the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana! Roberts moves away from her previous group efforts, to hit even more experimental sounds here – which include her own alto saxophone lines, plus work on a Korg Monotron, an early 1900s upright piano, and even a bit of vocalizations too – all taken at a level that's way beyond jazz, and which has elements of found sound mixing with processed instrumental passages, and even some odd snippets of classic American songs. The effort comes off sounding as if an avant jazz album were recorded with an older 4AD aesthetic – with all the dense sonic structures that might imply – and the whole thing's definitely one more reason to keep your eyes focused on Roberts' genius in years to come! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download & art print poster.)

✨✧ MARRSPump Up The Volume (long, bonus beat, inst)/Anitina ... 12-inch
4th & Broadway, 1987. Used (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An offshoot of the 4AD rock scene from the UK, this number sampled Rakim from "Paid In Full" to great effect – and it made quite a bit of sense that the track was issued on 4th & Broadway in the US (probably also a legal move, so that the label wouldn't sue 4AD for copping a sample from one of their artists! The record features a bit of scratching by CJ Mackintosh, with a bubbly beat that made it huge on both sides of the Atlantic. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has some creases.)
