Cossi AnatzCossi Anatz – Jazz Afro-Occitan ... LP
Vendemiaire/Digger's Digest (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Really fantastic work from Cossi Anatz – a 70s French group who play something they term as "jazz Afro-Occitan" – a wonderful hybrid of modes that's even more compelling than you might think! At some level, the record follows from some of the experiments of Jef Gilson along these lines, and maybe a bit like some of the famous MPS jazz-meets-world recordings – but the style is also more freewheeling and open, done with more of an influence from Free jazz at times – and with rhythms that almost point the way more towards 80s experiments of this nature, particularly some from the Don Cherry side of the spectrum. The group features Michel Marre on trumpet in the lead – clearly the lead creative force, as he also wrote all the songs – and the lineup also features Jean-Marc Padovani on soprano sax and tenor, plus electric and acoustic piano, drums, and two more percussionists. Titles include "Al Coltrane", "Sarhaoui", "Bourree Du Ceor", and "Hortus". LP, Vinyl record album

Nat BirchallLive In Larissa – Divine Harmony In Duende Jazz Bar ... LP
Sound Soul & Spirit/Parafono (UK), 2013. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99
Sublime live sounds from the great Nat Birchall – one of the most spiritual jazzmen currently working today! The set has Nat and his quintet really stretching out – playing his own great compositions, plus some Impulse and Strata East classics too – all at an open, searching, constantly creative level that really lives up to their inspiration from the Coltrane generation! Nat himself plays tenor and soprano sax – and the group features piano, vibes, bass, and drums – plus a bit of bells as well. The whole thing's very spiritual – like some lost Strata set from the 70s – and titles include remakes of Clifford Jordan's "John Coltrane" and Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" – plus the tracks "Sacred Dimension", "The Black Ark", "Return To Ithaca", and "Divine Harmony". Selenites BandEthio Jazz Groove Project ... LP
Stereophonk, 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
An album that definitely lives up to the title – as the music here is rooted in classic Ethiopian modes, but also has the freer flow of a contemporary funky jazz ensemble! There have been other Ethio-styled albums from current groups in recent years, but this set may well be one of the best – as the group really leave room for plenty of their own sense of expression, which includes some nicely roomy solos, especially on baritone sax! Other instrumentation includes Fender Rhodes, moog, flute, bass, drums, guitar, and some guest organ – and titles include reworks of classics by Mulatu Astatke and some of his contemporaries – "Yegelle Tezeta", "Yekatit", "Muzikawi Silt", "Yekermo Sew", and "Antchim Endelela". VariousSpiritual Jazz 10 – Modal, Esoteric, & Deep Jazz From Prestige Records ... LP
Prestige/Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A really loving look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the Prestige Records label – a company that's famous for giving the world plenty of hardbop and soul jazz in the 50s and 60s, but which also helped lay the groundwork for American spiritual jazz to come! Long before Impulse, Strata East, MPS, and other labels were working with the music – and even long before Coltrane first started to soar into the cosmos – Prestige was letting its musicians really experiment with unusual rhythms, extended solos, and even some non-Western instrumentation – which resulted in a set of records that were years ahead of their time, and which still sound pretty darn mindblowing all these many years later! The package is a long-overdue entry in this hip series from Jazzman Records, and will also have you looking at your collection of older jazz in a completely new way – thanks to tracks that include "Summertime" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, "Love Theme From Spartacus" by Yusef Lateef, "Dorian" by Roy Haynes, "Rip A Dip" by The Latin Jazz Quintet, "Warm Canto" by Mal Waldron, "Organ Rounds" by Moondog, "Death & Taxes" by Walt Dickerson, "Song Of Delilah" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, and "Modette" by Roy Haynes – plus 70s tracks "I've Known Rivers" by Gary Bartz Ntu Troop and "Peace" by Idris Muhammad. VariousYou Need This – A Journey Into Deep Jazz Vol 3 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.98
An excellent collection of rare jazz grooves – the special kind of tracks that effortlessly mix up influences and styles, with a result that makes each and every number a real standout in the set! This is the third volume in the series, and the mix of music is wonderful – tunes from artists who are definitely jazz, and who have sophistication that goes way past familiar funky modes – into territory that's often far-reaching, and influenced by spiritual modes – even though all the tracks have a great little groove! There's plenty of fantastic modal moments in the collection, and although the core energy of the package comes from the 70s underground jazz scene, there's also some great bits from other periods too. Titles include "Nepal" by Bjorn Alkes Kvartette, "Probuzeni" by Jazz Celula "Dawn" by Sangram, "Manteca" by Phineas Newborn Jr, "Pan African Ballet Music" by Karlton Hester & The Contemporary Jazz Art Movement, "Hasta La Victra Siempra" by Copa Salvo, "Impressions" by Stafford James Ensemble, "Middle Passage" by Tyrone Jefferson, "Aladdin's Carpet" by Beaver Harris, and "24 Carat" by Gabor Szabo. Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 32.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. 2LP set features studio material – including "Saturday Morning", "Villa Tiamo", "Chi-Congo 50", "I Greet You With Open Arms", and "Fanfare & Bell". ✨✧ Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

BelenouEmosyon Tambou-a ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". Decca/Universal (UK), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A record with a bit of a gag in the title, but a set that has the mighty Caravan at their classic best – simply soaring to the skies on some of the best-crafted prog lines of their generation! The lineup has shifted a bit from before – only core members Pye Hastings on guitar and Richard Coughan on drums – but the sound is still wonderful, as Dave Sinclair steps on with lots of cool work on keyboards – and the group get assorted guest help from Brit jazz giants who include Tony Coe on tenor, Pete King on flute and alto, Henry Lowther on trumpet, Frank Rocotti on congas, and Rubert Hine on Arp! Peter Geoffrey Richardson is also a core member of the group, and provides electric viola at many spots – an instrument which doesn't change the Caravan sound, so much as slide right in and expand it. Titles include "The Dog The Dog He's At It Again", "A Hauting We Shall Go", "Headloss", "Surprise Surprise", "Memory Lain Hugh", and "C'Thlu Thlu". LP, Vinyl record album

CaravanIn The Land Of Grey & Pink (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Deram/Universal (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Caravan – one of the greatest groups to emerge from the jazzy Canterbury scene in the late 60s! The album's a wonderful blend of jazz roots and more focused rock impulses – and has some subtle funky elements that's given it a wider sort of audience over the years – that special sound you'd find in a rare few Deram gems by artists like Mike Westbrook or Colosseum too. The drums are especially great – snapping out in a way that really holds things together, even when the instrumental solos really step out strongly – especially the organ, flute, and tenor – all of which retain a jazzy appeal. The vocals from Richard Sinclair are nice, too – never overdone, with almost a Robert Wyatt sort of reserve – and titles include "Golf Girl", "Love To Love You", "In The Land Of Grey & Pink", and the extended "Nine Feet Underground", which takes up all of side two. CaravanWaterloo Lily (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
London/Universal (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A bit of a shift in lineup for Caravan – but a set that has the group stepping out in all their fantastic proggy glory! This time around, Steve Miller provides some incredible work on electric piano, organ, and electric harpsichord – and the set also features some guest soprano sax work from Lol Coxhill, who'd later record wonderfully with Miller on Virgin Records – and whose presence here further underscores the qualities that make Caravan one of the jazziest groups of their prog generation! The classic core is wonderful too – Pye Hastings on guitars, Richard Sinclair on bass, and Richard Coughlan on drums – and the interplay between the latter two is fantastic, and really keeps the album driving onward. Titles include "Waterloo Lilly", "Songs & Signs", "Nothing At All", "Aristocracy", "The World Is Yours", and "The Love In Your Eye/To Catch Me A Brother/Subsultus/Debouchement/Tilbury Kecks". Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". Alice ColtraneEternity ... LP
Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". LP, Vinyl record album

Fabriano FuzionCosmic Sindika ... LP
Beau Monde (France), Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A beautiful blend of global rhythm and jazz – served up by bassist/berimbau player Serge Fabriano – a musician with equal ties to Paris and Guadeloupe, but who works here in a style that's completely his own! The music isn't as directly tied to other Guadeloupe rhythms as other Parisian projects of this nature – but maybe that's because the leader's handling bass, instead of piano or percussion – an instrument he uses very much upfront in the mix, to chart a path that the others then follow along with a strong sense of energy and improvisation! The group features, the great Alain Jean-Marie on piano, plus Edouard Labor on tenor and soprano sax, and Pierre Labor on alto – and although there are vocals on the record, the instrumentation seems to get even more time in the spotlight – on titles that include "Kosmos 1", "Kaladja Vivilo 2, "Karibean Suite", "Se Kon Sa", and "Manege". An early classic solo jam from Fat Jon – one of our favorite underground hip hop beat wizards in the immediate post millennium – and a more than ample effort that still sounds great today! Combining his Dyslexic and Stasis EPs, it features a trademark batch Fat Jon's chilled out hip hop excursions into the realm of jazzy tone science. The beats here are fairly straight forward and snap nicely to keep it in head nodding territory, but his signature atmospheric production style is still floating nicely over the filtered basslines and crisp drum loops. Includes "Where?", "Feel The Void", "Visual Music", "For Stress", 'Wet Secrets", "Automated Life Machines" and "Surrection". 2019 version includes a couple extra tracks: "Trust You" and "Rain Dance Instrumental". Ceasar FrazierCeasar Frazier – 75 ... LP
Westbound/Be With (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
The second great album from organist Ceasar Frazier – a tightly grooving set that expands his sound a bit from the first! All the best elements are still in place here – including funky organ from Ceasar, production from jazz funk maestro Bob Porter, and a hip range of players that includes Horace Ott, Wilbur Bascomb, and Bernard Purdie. But the overall sound is somewhat shifted too – brought more into the tightly jamming jazz funk mode of the mid 70s – a bit richer and fuller overall, yet never in a way that's slick or sloppy – just more like some of the best later sides on Prestige or Fantasy from the same stretch. The record features a crazy version of the "Mighty Mouse Theme", a mellow take on the Isley's "Summer Breeze", Stevie Wonder's great "Living For The City", and the original "Funk It Down". Excellent work from Full Blast – a trio who really live up to their name, joined here by another trio of guests – with a sound that's even more of a full blast than before! The core group features Peter Brotzmann on saxes, Marino Pliakas on bass, and Michael Wertmuller on drums – moving in territory that really lives up to the Brotzmann legacy – but then expanded with work from Keiji Haino on guitar, Peter Evans on trumpet, and Mars Williams on tenor and alto – all players with nicely different aspects in their music, which find a way to resonate strongly with the group in this sextet performance recorded at Jazzfest Berlin in 2008. Jacky GiordanoOrgan – IM 24 ... LP
Le Tres Jazz Club (France), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
Fantastic funky organ from Jacky Giordano – a European keyboardist who seems to sparkle in just about every style he tries on! The set's a sound library record, barely issued at the time – but Jacky treats the proceedings like he's trying to audition for some top-level jazz organ position – using some moments that have a Verve Records jazz approach, others that are lighter and more melodic, and others that rival the keyboard grooves of sound library contemporary Alan Hawkshaw! There's just a bit of rhythm on most tracks, and most titles are quite short – but Giordano packs a lot into a little – on titles that include "Coffee Or Tea", "Latest News", "Hey Taxy", "Easy Drive", "Interrogation Point", "Pheasant Moment", and "Beating Around". Keyboardist Jacky Giordano really steps out here – in an "organ plus" mode that also features work on a fair bit of other electric keys too! The style is nice and simple – tight, short tracks that follow the best sound library funk modes of the 70s – with plenty of elements that recall more famous soundtrack work for cop shows or crime films – delivered by Jacky with effortless ease on a shifting array of keyboard styles throughout the set! Some tracks have more of a moogy vibe, others are more Hammond-driven – and titles include "Hold It", "Hitch Hiker", "Riffologic", "Be Careful", "Hesitation", "Self Confidence", "May Day", and "Agitation". Eddie HarrisIn Sound (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... About February 20, 2020 (delayed)
We can never get enough of Eddie Harris – and a record like this is a great reason why! Despite all the many different settings Eddie worked in at Atlantic, he still always stayed true to his roots – and a record like this is a perfect example of that – no electric horn, no funk, but a rock-solid sense of tone and timing that's unbelievable – and which makes the album a soulful treasure throughout! Of course, the group really helps a lot too – keeping things as in the pocket as Eddie's playing – with great rhythms from Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. And as an added treat, the set features killer work on trumpet from Ray Codrington – a player who we only know from the JFK Quintet albums – but who's an equal killer here. Titles include the first version of Eddie's classic "Freedom Jazz Dance", plus "Born To Be Blue", "Love For Sale", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Cryin' Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Leroy HutsonUnforgettable ... LP
Curtom/Acid Jazz (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $14.99
A great little set from Leroy Hutson – proof that he was still going strong through all his years at Curtom! The vibe here is a bit different than his first few records, and you might be suspicious with Leroy wearing a disco shirt on the front – but the sound is wonderful, and only shows Hutson blossoming into a more sophisticated singer, songwriter, and producer – one with a great ear for the careful balance needed for the modern soul generation! The shift is a bit like Roy Ayers on his late 70s work for Polydor – and Hutson is definitely on a par with Ayers in our book – we'd always put the two side by side for the strength of their work in the 70s. Seminal tracks include "So Nice" and "Right or Wrong" – both of which are amongst some of his best work ever – and other tracks include "Unforgettable", "Funk In My Life", and "Lonely Without You". Ill ConsideredIll Considered 5 ... LP
Ill Considered (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
This brilliant British collective never lets us down – and here, on their majestic fifth album, they seem to soar towards the heaven even more – with a righteous spirit that comes through from the very first note, and which never seems to let up at all as they spin out some long, beautiful tracks that are filled with heavenly soul! In a generation where other groups are maybe reworking the spiritual jazz modes of the 70s, Ill Considered are finding a space that's completely their own – unabashedly open to new modes of expression, and in a way that creates a beautiful balance between darkness and light! At the start, the bass work of Leon Brichard seems to be the guiding force at the core of the tunes, but the drums of Emre Ramazanoglu take over more once things get going – all while the unrelenting reed work of Idris Rahman just keeps burning brightly, as Satin Singh fills in all the spaces with his percussion. Columbia (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $49.99
A definite head rocker here – a brilliant bit of funky jazz from Japan, and a record that beautifully balances acoustic and electric elements! Jiro Inagaki plays some heavy tenor and soprano sax on the record – working with a combo that includes electric guitar, electric bass, and organ – plus a trumpet joining Jiro in the frontline! The rhythms are tight, hard, and very funky at times – drenched in soul, but also filtered through a bit of a psychedelic influence, as you might guess from the cover on the record – and Jiro's choppy tenor and soprano come off with some of the same sharp notes and changes you might expect from the best European funky fusion of the time. Tracks include "Spoonful", "The Ground For Peace", "Head Rock", "The Vamp", "Back To Back", "High Jack", and "Twenty One". LP, Vinyl record album

Bryony Jarman-PintoCage & Aviary ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $20.99 21.99
Very cool work from Bryony Jarman-Pinto – a singer who's way more than just a singer – partly because she often uses the studio to harmonize alongside herself, which brings a very hip vibe to her sound! Bryony's maybe tied most strongly to jazz, but there's a heck of a lot going on here too – straighter soul lyrics overall, often with a vibe that's personal and positive – given a kick by skittish drums, unusual keyboard lines, light colors from acoustic guitar, and some guest sax lines from Ben Watt! The lead vocal often has this inflection that emphasizes some jazz roots, even though the music is never straight jazz at all – and there's a very special, very compelling quality to the record that makes us think we'll be hearing a lot more from Bryony in years to come. CBS/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Groovy groovy groovy! Les Masques were a 60s vocal-oriented Brazilian combo from France, and they had a tight jazzy approach that was similar to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66! That alone would be enough to make them #1 in our book – but they also get some excellent backing from the Trio Camara, who back the band with some nice organy riffs, and a very tight rhythm section! The whole thing's a great lost bit of Braziliana – with that crossover sound that you'll hear on the best 60s and 70s European recordings of this sort. Includes the great groover "Il Faut Tenir", which has shown up on a few compilations over the years – plus "Mais Un Jour", "Enfer", "Echo", "Un Regard .. JMD/Digger's Digest (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99
An album that's unlike anything else we've ever heard before – served up by a percussionist who spent the mid 70s touring the Caribbean and South Pacific, and who seems to have absorbed a globe's worth of rhythms in the process! The album's probably closest to a jazz fusion album – as there's no vocals, and instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic – with lots of keyboard lines throughout, peppered with guitar, alto, tenor, and trumpet – yet the rhythmic changes are very different from familiar fusion, as is the role of the instruments – which don't always get solo space, because they're all so tied to the groove! The whole thing's got an upbeat, freewheeling vibe – sounds filled with plenty of joy and rhythm – and titles include "Tipi Fanm", "Doubout Pou Gade", "Syka", "Marie Blanche", and "Vini Coute E Tann". Mighty SparrowSlave (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
National/Modern Harmonic, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A great 60s record from Mighty Sparrow – and the kind of set that shows just how different calypso music could sound when you got away from Harry Belafonte and the hits! The music here is every bit as political and socially conscious as earlier recordings of the genre – but you can also hear some of the cool 60s changes taking place on the Caribbean scene – including great use of horns to inflect most of the tunes with a great sort of edge – in the way Jamaican jazz and mento styles were shifting gears into rocksteady and ska! Sparrow's vocals have plenty of bite – and titles include "The Slave", "Calypso Twist", "Corbeau Sheltering Rain", "Popularity Contest", "Stupid Married Man", "Kennedy & Kruschev", and "Old Man & The Donkey". Incus/Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Incredible work from a group that forever changed the face of British jazz – and which really found a way for improvised music to exist in a space that's all its own! The "company" is really a quartet – with Derek Bailey on guitar, Evan Parker on soprano sax, Hugh Davies on organ and electronics, and Jamie Muir on percussion – working in a way that's definitely got plenty of free jazz elements, but which also occasionally resonates with experiments in electro-acoustic sound from the 60s – yet at a level that's much warmer and personal, which is the sensibility that important improvisers like this can really bring to the music! Parker also plays a bit of amplified auto harp, which is great – and titles include "In The Victim's Absence", "Pointing", "Bedrest", "Untitled 3", "Untitled 4", and "Its Tongue Trapped To The Rock By A Limpet The Water Rat Succumbed To The Incoming Tide". Speed, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A lost boogaloo classic! This is one of the rare few records to come out on the tiny Speed label during the 60s – a hotbed of production for some of New York's most unique Latin Soul sides. Like other albums on the label, this set is a nicely messed up batch of tracks that shifts effortlessly from soul to jazz to hard Latin jamming – all held together with a youthful sense of energy, and a wrong-side-of-the-tracks attitude about the music! Bastard Jazz, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A great full length set from The Pendletons – a group who've given us some great singles in recent years, but who seem to sharpen up their sound even more in an extended setting! These guys started out in more of a lean 80s funk mode, but have really warmed up their groove – so that both the instrumentation and vocals have a rock solid quality that results in some really strong soul tunes – still funky, but with a richer, deeper quality that almost feels like when some old school funk act would go for a midtempo stepper or a mellower groove! The set features guest work from Howard Johnson and Gizelle Smith – both of whom really slide into the Pendletons sound – and titles include "Blessings For The World", "You Do You", "No Regrets", "Life To Me", "Running Away", "There Goes My Mind", "Keep It Working", and "2 Steps Away". Bobby RodriguezSimply Macrame (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Jazz Men/Jazz Detective (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A fantastic album of soulful jazz – and one that's got a lot more staying power than the macrame craze of the 70s! Don't confuse this Bobby with the Rodriguez who put out some mid 70s salsa albums on Vaya in New York – because this Bobby's a trumpet player from the LA scene, one who worked with Gerald Wilson, and is striking out here on his own in a sweet self-produced set! Instrumentation on the set is a bit ambitious – with large-ish sax and trumpet participation – but the overall groove is nice and compressed, and driven by some strong rhythms laid down by Ndugu Chancler and a host of added Latin percussionists. The highlight of the set is the side-long spiritually-soulful "Simply Macrame" – which runs for 16 minutes, and builds nicely in a "Little Sunflower" mode – using some vocals from singer Betty Macias to initiate the Latin-tinged groove, and set the tone for a host of sweet solo work to come. The album also features a nice take on Lee Morgan's "Caramba", plus the original tunes "Judy's In Love" and "Straight No Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Albert's Favourites (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An Arkestra performance, but one that's headed up by Mark De Clive-Lowe – who wrote all the material, and produced the record too – as a great extension of some of the more spiritual directions he's been taking in his own music in recent years! The group have a sound that definitely lives up to the spiritual jazz reference you might expect from their name – building nicely on waves of piano and keyboards from Mark, with excellent work from other ensemble members on tenor, flute, alto, trumpet, and guitar – all soaring to the skies in a great 21st Century take on 70s spiritual jazz modes! There's a number of drummers on the record, and there's no rhythm programs listed – save for "fx" and "live electronics" in the credits – but it feels as if there might be a slight current of beats amidst the live instrumentation from time to time. Not that any of that gets in the way of the sound – which is tightly focused and soaring to the skies, on tracks that include "Fallen Angel", "Tempestuous Temperaments", "Cosmic Collisions", "Lullabies Of The Lost", "Elegy Of Entrapment", and "The Art Of Altercation". One of Mongo Santamaria's best albums from the 70s – and one of his funkiest too! The record's got a sweet electric groove that sounds mighty nice next to the Latin jazz arrangements on the set – almost in the feel of some of Candido's funky work from the time, but possibly even heavier! Justo Almario is on tenor and flute in the set – and Mongo's group here is a small combo, with electric bass, piano, and lots of sax and flute! Includes loads of great original tunes – like "Chambique", "Don't Step On My Tears", "Crazy Lady", "Besame", and "Malcolm X" – plus Mongo's semi-hit version of "Last Tango In Paris". A record with a lot of visual impact, and one with a fair bit of audio impact too – given that the tracks are a great mix of funk, jazz, and some of the more dramatic styles from the KPM sound library of the 70s! The music is nicely varied, but all in the best KPM modes – as even the mellower moments still have a key sort of hook – and the album itself veers more towards the kind of upbeat, groovy tunes that usually make KPM so great! Artists include Brit sound library giants, Johnny Pearson, Johnny Scott, Steve Gray, and Brian Bennett – and titles include "Low Profile", "Nuplex", "Sequence Of Events", "Source Of Energy", "Canaveral Scape", "Keeping Pace", "Giant's Causeway", and "Jaguar". Sexedelic (Manfred Huebler & Sigi Schwab)Sexedelic ... LP
Metronome/Wah Wah (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A fantastic record that more than lives up to the promise of its title and cover – and a set that's gone onto legendary fame as part of the music used by director Jess Franco for his Vampyros Lesbos films! The music here comes from the German jazz scene of the early 70s – a sound library set that features the talents of guitarist Sigi Schwab, who you'll know from some very groovy records on MPS – and a host of other great projects at the time! Schwab put the music together with keyboardist Manfred Huebler, in a style that's got the same blend of funk, jazz, and psych as some of the MPS jazz albums by artists like Dave Pike or Wolfang Dauner – but which comes across here with maybe even a bit more sense of freedom, as the whole thing works to convey the vibe of some sort of drug-fueled orgy on record! Think of this as a psychedelic take on porno sounds, and you'll only get part of the picture – because the jazz chops are wonderful, as is the sense of arrangement and production. Titles include "People's Playground", in five variations – plus "Kamasutra", "Konkubination", "Shindai Lovers", "The 6 Wisdoms Of Aspasia", "We Don't Care", and "Necronomania". LP, Vinyl record album

StuffLive Stuff ... LP
Warner (Japan), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $45.99
A nice little live set from Stuff – one that's recorded in Tokyo, with a groove that's a bit more open than their better-known New York live album from a few years later! The sound's somewhat rougher than the Stuff studio sessions, but in a good way – one that shows that the combo can really jam nicely, in a blend of funky rhythms, jazzy riffing, and a few soul-inspired moments. There's also a surprising Motown element to the music too – heard in the group's "Junior Walker Medley" – which fuses "Road Runner" and "Pucker Up Buttercup" – and in their long take on "Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours" – although both these tunes are quite far from Motown in their overall execution. Players include Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale on guitars, Richard Tee on keyboards, and Steve Gadd on drums – and other cuts include "Foots", "Need Somebody", and "Love Of Mine". Hiromasa SuzukiPrimrose ... LP
Union/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Warm and wonderful work from pianist Hiromasa Suzuki – a real leading light in the Japanese trio scene of the 70s! The album's got a really wonderful vibe throughout – modes initially informed by a bit of Bill Evans, and maybe some Tommy Flanagan too – recorded with warm tones and a nice sort of sparkle – yet never in a commercial way, just with that clear, clean sound that makes so many Japanese trio dates from this time so great. Suzuki takes off nicely on some tunes, but never goes too far outside – and a few others have a slightly straighter feel – showing his balanced emotion on the keys, as well as his strong compositional abilities, as all tunes here appear to be originals. The trio features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and Steve Jackson on drums – the latter of whom is especially nice – and titles include "Hornet", "Primrose", "Dis-Charge", "Pincer Attack", "Early Summer", and "Knick Knacks". Erik TaggRendezvous ... LP
Poker/P-Vine (Japan), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... About March 4, 2020
Warmly crafted vocal work from Erik Tagg – a Dutch singer who'd relocated to Texas by the time of this mid 70s set – singing here in English with some nicely jazzy backings on the set! There's a style here that's a bit singer/songwriter, but somewhat deeper too – one that has a nicely smooth glide, and a slight undercurrent of soul at times – particularly in the Free Soul mode, and all the bright colors and good feelings that reference might imply! Tagg's lyrics are decent, but the real appeal of the set is the overall sound – the blend of his well-produced vocals with the heavy keyboards in the instrumentation – often served up with a smooth and groovy quality that reminds us of much bigger-name sets from the LA scene of the time. Titles include "Got To Be Lovin You", "Rendezvous", "Fancy Meeting You", "Marja's Tune", "Babies", "Soul Touch", and "Life Goes On". LP, Vinyl record album

A 70s classic from bassist Henri Texier – a musician who's been a key part of the French jazz scene for decades, and already had a very unusual approach in his early years! Texier is fantastic here on acoustic bass – but he's also already opening up in so many other ways too – sometimes vocalizing wordlessly alongside his instrument, sometimes going electric, and always avoiding the temptation to get too moody that he'd forget to swing – which sometimes happened with other 70s bass pioneers. A number of cuts even have a cool global jazz component – but not in a hokey way at all – as Texier mixes oud alongside the bass, and also uses a bit of flute, cello, and percussion. Titles include "Homme Rouge", "Quand Tout S'Arrete", "Les Korrigans", "Amir", and "Le Sage Le Singe Et Les Petits Enfants". LP, Vinyl record album

JMS (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
French bassist Henri Texier has given us some really amazing music over the decades – but this rare gem from the late 70s may be one of his grooviest records overall – and has this criss-crossing of styles that's really fantastic! Texier doesn't just play acoustic bass, but also electric, percussion, and even a bit of oud – which he uses to create this cool global jazz sound, but in a way that's very unique – partly because a number of the tracks have wordless vocals from Henri, kind of floating over the top and really bringing a sense of majesty to the music! If you love Texier's work on acoustic bass, don't worry – as the record also still features plenty of superb work on that instrument too, really captured here with a strong yet subtle sonic quality. Strut (UK), 1990/1995/2014. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
A return to greatness for the legendary Tribe Records scene in Detroit – an underground movement that gave us some spiritual jazz classics in the 70s – then kept on making wonderful music at an even more underground level as the years went on! This set is a collection of work from three rare recordings issued during that time – all on CD only, and representing a maybe even more obscure side of this legacy than the Tribe albums of the 70s! First up is trombonist Phil Ranelin – heading up a group that includes Wendell Harrison on tenor and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – two key Tribe partners from the early years – really stretching out on the titles "He The One We All Knew" and "Freddie's Groove", both recorded in 1990. Next is material from a 1995 performance led by pianist Harold McKinney – a set that's got an incredible depth of imagination and soul, almost as much as Harold McKinney's work of years back! The group is a wonderfully hip one – with former Tribe artists Wendell Harrison on tenor and clarinet and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – plus additional players who include Kiane Zawadi on trombone, Reggie Workman on bass, Francisco Mora on percussion, and Jimmy Owens on trumpet. There's a bit of vocals, but never that much – and most tracks are long and open – freely exploratory, but never too far out or avant-styled – just soulful and spiritual, in the true Tribe Records tradition! Titles include "Wide & Blue", "The Slave Ship Enterprise", "Juba", "Libra Ahora", and "Conjure Man". Last is a set of tracks recorded in 2014 by keyboardist Pamela Wise – a record that really carries forward the Tribe Records spirit from the 70s! The overall approach is a bit more contemporary, but the set's still got all the best feel of a classic indie album from the underground – played and penned by Wise in close collaboration with reedman Wendell Harrison, a frequent partner of Pamela's on a variety of projects, and one of the driving forces of Tribe back in the day! Wise plays both acoustic and electric keyboards, and sometimes sings just slightly – although most of the album is instrumental – and in addition to Harrison's work on tenor and bass clarinet, the album features trumpet, guitar, and lots of percussion. Titles include "Ode To Black Mothers", "Hometown", and "Marcus Garvey". LP, Vinyl record album

Wilfred is a hell of a percussionist – as you might guess from the title of the group and the album – and works here in a style that's similar to some of the best Brazilian jazz of the 70s – no surprise, as the album's filled with versions of classic songs by Milton Nascimento and Hermeto Pascoal! Wilfred also adds a few of his own tunes to the set, too – and the group has this great mix of keyboards and guitar with warmer acoustic percussion – all topped by the lovely vocals of Liliana, who can soar through a breezy line with the same jazzy changes as Brazilian singers like Flora Purim or Joyce! The great Cicci Santucci plays trumpet in the group, too – and the whole thing is right up there with the best jazz/fusion/Brazilian sets coming out of Germany at the time, such as work on the Nabel label – and titles include "Circo", "Tudo", "Andei", "Papo Eurado", "Uri", "Cravo E Canela", and "Ragazza Dell'Est". Jackie WilsonHigher & Higher (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brunswick/Demon (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A wonderful little album from Jackie Wilson – one that helped him redefine his sound and save his career! Jackie's earlier work for Brunswick was a mish-mash of styles that ranged from raw R&B to smooth supper-club jazz to silly novelty numbers, all of which had gotten pretty stale by the mid 60s. Elsewhere at Brunswick, though, things were really popping during the time – as Carl Davis was turning the label's Chicago offices into a hotbed of soul, forged in the newer hipper styles of the Chisoul scene. Davis got Wilson into the Chicago scene for this album – had him working with arranger Sonny Sanders and director Gerald Sims – to create a wonderful batch of strident soul tunes that perfectly embody the loping Chisoul groove that was Davis' real legacy in soul music during the 60s. The prime example of this is the title cut "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher" – which became a runaway hit that put Wilson back on the map I the soul business. The rest of the album's just as great, though, and includes loads of solid numbers like "Soulville", "I've Lost You", "Those Heartaches", and "I'm The One To Do It". LP, Vinyl record album

We're not usually the sorts to dig tribute albums, but the mighty Mose Allison is one of our favorite talents from years back – and the lineup here do a great job of reviving some of the classic spirit of Mose, while also pushing things forward with their own creative reinterpretations of his legacy! If you don't know Allison, he was a jazz pianist first, and a singer second – the latter the quality that brought him great fame, with lots of New Orleans-inflected qualities in his vocals, and lyrics that had a nicely biting mix of contemporary wit and more vintage themes. That legacy has held up wonderfully over the years – and is interpreted here by a host of different artists – a lineup that includes "If You're Going To The City" by Iggy Pop, "Your Mind Is On Vacation" by Taj Mahal, "My Brain" by Robbie Fulks, "If You Life" by Jackson Browne, "Parchman Farm" by Richard Thompson, "Ever Since The World Ended" by Loudon Wainwright III, "Stop This World" by Chrissie Hynde, "Numbers On Paper" by Frank Black, and "Monsters Of The Id" by Amy Allison with Elvis Costello. The Nigerian groove of the 70s – way past the familiar modes of Fela Kuti, and served up here in a range of artists who followed on a huge second wave of soul that soared from Lagos and beyond in the second half of the decade! The music here opens up in a sweet range of different styles – including bits of club and boogie that have come into the scene to open up Nigerian funk in more global modes for the dancefloor – blending African roots with American currents, in a sound that's completely unique – and which is way better than some of the Afro-disco modes that were coming from Europe a the time! As usual with the folks at Soul Jazz, the set's an ear-opening work of genius – from the superb track selection, to the very thorough notes and research – which really do a great job of presenting this side of Nigerian funk that's always been a bit eclipsed by some of the bigger names on the scene. Liner notes are by dancefloor historian Bill Brewster – and titles include "Do The Funkro" by Joni Haastrup, "You Can't Change A Man" by Christy Essien, "Afrikana Disco" by Akin Richards & The Executives, "Ocheche" by Don Bruce & The Anges, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" by Tee Mac, "Get Up & Dance" by Benis Cletin, "Enoviyin" by Colomach, "Nwaeze" by Jimmy Sherry & The Musik Agents, "Wake Up Your Mind" by Joni Haastrup, "Disco Dancing" by Angela Starr, "Mr Been To" by Arakatula, "Living Every Day" by Tee Mac with Marjorie Barnes, "Wake Up Africa" by Arakatula, and "Soul Fever" by Benis Cletin. A lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Opium Den", "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number that's done in both vocal and instrumental versions. A great harvest of sounds from Japanese pianist Makoto Terashita – a set that also features strong contributions from Bob Berg on tenor, who comes in at a few key spots to really deepen the sound! The core of the record features Terashita working with his trio – Errol Walters on bass and Jo Jones on drums – plus a bit of guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – and these trio tracks are really wonderful, with a long-flowing vibe that's a bit like work from the time by Fumio Karashima. Berg really steps it up in the right places – especially on the wonderful 12 minute track "Tell Me An Old Story Grand Papa" – which is a perfect illustration of the strength of the Japanese jazz scene at the time, and the way it found a unique way to blend together post-Coltrane ideals of soul and spiritualism, but at a level that's different than the US. Deeply spiritual jazz from the American underground of the 20th century – music that sits in a perfect space between straight jazz and more avant garde material – always reaching out in this really soaring, searching sort of way – but never too outside or free! Rhythms are at the core of most of these numbers – often modal elements, with especially strong basslines – or earthy percussion with strong Afrocentric inspirations, recast here in the huge wave of jazz experimentation of the 60s and 70s! Most tracks are from those key decades, but he set also features some overlooked gems from the 80s too – and a good deal of these tracks are from albums we hardly ever see anymore these days. The hippest funky jazz from the start of the 70s – music that takes all the pride, power, triumph, and challenge of the 60s – and focuses into a bold new energy for a young generation! Nearly every track is a classic – and all the artists are ones we've supported for years on their own reissues – and together, the tracks sound wonderful, especially when given the full sort of Soul Jazz presentation with great notes and other details. Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 19.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". The best we've heard so far from Dayme Arocena – a Cuban singer who's got a great way of reaching out from Havana with a sound that can circle the globe! The music here has a blend of jazz, soul, and Cuban roots – but all delivered together in a style that's completely unique and without cliche – really showing a maturity in Dayme's vocals since the previous record, and in her overall conception of a song! Instrumentation is by her core quartet, recorded live and openly, in a really unfettered way that instantly matches the spirit of Dayme's vocals too. The whole thing is tremendous – a record that lives up to the truest promise of the Brownswood label – with titles that include "Nangareo", "Porque Tu No Estas", "Yemaya", "Plegaria A La Lupe", "Homenaje", "Para El Amor Cantar", and "As Feridas". Warner/Polysom (Brazil), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Quite an unusual record from trumpeter Magnus Broo – a set that him handling a number of jazz standards – which is a real change from the more experimental sounds we've always heard from his own pen! And yet, amidst the current Scandia scene, Broo's always had a depth of tone that's really classic – and his approach here is wonderful, as he doesn't just echo familiar modes with the songs, but instead uses them as these compelling showcases for his unusual phrasing – his very particular way with the mouthpiece, which gets plenty of room in the spotlight – thanks to a trio setting that features the great Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Hakon Mjaset Johanson on drums. If you're just expecting a set of ballads and easygoing jazz, then think again – as Magnus creates a wealth of surprises here – on titles that include "You've Changed", "Summertime", "Easy Living", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Don't Explain", and "Like Someone In Love". Mighty funky mushrooms from the Canadian scene of the early 70s – a group who work with a jazzy sort of energy, but also know when to rock out as well – serving up this wonderful blend of saxes, organ, guitar, bass, and drums! The songs are mostly instrumental, and kind of poised between late beat group and early prog modes – usually with a great sort of groove going on at the bottom, almost soul jazz moving into fusion – and solos that get the job done, but all without ever getting too overindulgent! The group's a sextet, and are wonderfully sharp throughout – on titles that include "Folies Du Mercredi", "Pop Pino", "Le Ghetto Noir", "Dynamite", "Le Train", and "Le Chateau Hante". Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums in a single package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Dynamic Sounds/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 34.99
One of the hippest sets ever issued during the roots reggae wave of the 70s – and one of the most spiritual, too! The album's got a very special acoustic vibe at the core – earthy drumming that goes back to a pan-African tradition, these beautiful acoustic basslines that link the music strongly with underground jazz, and even some wicked sax and reed passages that make that link even stronger – especially when tied to the more message-oriented lyrics of the vocals! The album's hardly a straight roots album – and instead goes deep into the more spiritual side of Rastafari, with a personal, acoustic style that's instantly captivating – and which also has strong appeal to fans of other global sounds, and 70s spiritual jazz as well. A stunning classic – with tracks that include "Lock Stock & Barrel", "Selam Nna Wadada", "Tales Of Mozambique", "Let Freedom Reign", "Nigerian Reggae" and "Run One Mile". Maybe some of the early Becker/Fagan charm drifted upriver during their time at Bard College – or maybe these guys just really dug the best mix of soul and AOR modes taking place in the hipper studios out in LA – but whatever the case, Crac really deliver the goods at a level that's stunningly great – with wonderful original songs, well-crafted jazzy instrumentation, and lead vocals that hit the most soulful territory you'd hear from Hall & Oates. The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. Odeon/Polysom (Brazil), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A gem of a record – one we wouldn't part with for anything! Joao Donato's best known as one of the founding fathers of bossa nova – better known for his 60s work over the years, than he was for 70s electric work like this. Fortunately, international groove hounds picked up on the record years back, and it's been firmly brought back into the limelight as the classic it truly is! The set's an incredible reworking of Donato's sound – the gentle jazzy phrasing of the bossa years turned towards mellow groovers that feature a heck of a lot of electric piano. The album's got a few classic funky tracks, and some even more wonderful tracks that feature Joao working sparely on Fender Rhodes – accompanying himself on raspy vocals on most of the cuts! The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. A different sound than usual from the Fire Orchestra of Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin – a set that still features the large spontaneous composition style of the group, but which also has them working with singer Mariam Wallentin – whose vocals really add a lot to the whole process! Wallentin's a singer with a very powerful presence – and a style that's more innately tuneful than usual for the Fire ensemble – which makes for a very unusual, very creative mix with instrumentation that includes Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax, Per Texas Johansson on bass clarinet and oboe, Isak Hedtjarn on b sharp clarinet and alto, Susana Santos Silva on trumpet, Johan Berthling on bass, and Andreas Werliin on drums. The set also features keyboards from Tomas Hallonsten, which changes things up a bit too – as does the slight use of violin and viola – all of which makes for a record that has the group going way beyond jazz, and opening up a new audience for their sound. A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was bringing real magic to the records of pianist Bill Evans at the time – and music is by a core combo that includes American jazz musicians Ralph Grierson on keyboards and Grady Tate on drums – with some additional larger arrangements from Claus Ogerman, but used in a way that never clutters up the sound at all. Instead, Joao sounds beautiful right up front in the mix – with those sublime raspy vocals, and perfectly-placed lines on acoustic guitar – on titles that include a fabulous reading of "Estate", plus Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", and the tracks "Caminha Cruzados", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". The set was recorded at the end of the 70s with amazing fidelity – and features a unique lineup that includes Webster Lewis on additional keyboards and Alphonse Mouzon on drums – alongside more familiar partners Bennie Maupin on reeds, Paul Jackson on bass, and Bill Summers on percussion! Given these last three, there's almost a slight Headhunters feel to the set – but the overall groove is a bit more mellow, with some wonderfully spacey touches that are super-soulful – and miles above anything that Herbie was recording in the US at the time. Here's a group that never lets us down – and one who just seem to get better and better as they move into the farther reaches of their unique approach to jazz! The reeds of Idris Rahman soar out over the top of the sound, and have this edge that almost makes us feel as if they've been electrified for the record – although, as usual for the group, the artful packaging makes it a bit hard to delve into detail – but that's also part of the great aesthetics of the Ill Considered sound! The bass of Leon Brichard is fantastic – this pulse that really holds the whole thing together – while Emre Ramazanoglu goes nuts on the drums, and Satin Singh adds in plenty of percussion – all with this sound that's freewheeling, but always rhythmic at the core. A beautiful little record – of the sort it feels like the Moserobie label was created to record – jazz that's not totally free or improvised, but which is also doing way more than conventional swing as well – served up by a trio with a perfect sense of creative cohesion! The tunes build in very different ways – sometimes with a slight groove, sometimes more complexity – but never too arch for their own good. Per Texas Johansson is fantastic on both tenor and clarinet – and the always-fantastic work on bass of Torbjorn Zetterberg is completely sublime, and the core element that really holds the whole thing together. (Heck, he's such a hell of a bassist, we're not sure why he's not one of the most recognized musicians on the instrument in the world!) A modern bit of progressive avant jazz from Krokofant – a trio who take us back to some of the European power combos of the 70s, particularly those that could blend together electric styles and outside sounds in the Eastern Bloc scene! The core lineup features tremendous drums from Axel Skalstad, who also plays a bit of vibe – plus guitars from Tom Hasslan and saxes from Jorgen Mathisen – all used in a forward-thinking style that crests beautifully from the united energy of the trio! This time around, they've also got key help from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Stale Storlokken on keyboards – both players who help churn up the sound even more! The keyboards have a way of locating the guitar and saxophones nicely – and we're not sure we've ever heard Ingebrigt's bass in just such a setting, but it really rises to the occasion. The group's got lots of guitar pyrotechnics from Benjamin Bouton – who weaves his lines around the keyboards and bass of Kevin Toublant, and the mix of electric and acoustic drums of Leon Brichard – who always seems to provide a driving rhythm, no matter what the setting – but at a level that never overwhelms the other elements too much. A gem of a record from flute player Lloyd McNeil – an artist who flourished strongly during the spiritual jazz scene of the 70s, but who also seemed to always have his own sort of groove as well! Lloyd blows with the complexity and far-reaching sounds of contemporaries in the loft jazz scene, but he also opens up with more of a modal groove on most of these tracks too – a great pulse from a hip rhythm section that features Dom Salvador on piano, Cecil McBee on drums, Brian Brake on drums – and both Portinho and Ray Armando on percussion – players who add sensitive, subtle elements to the music to really resonate with the flute! Lloyd's sound is wonderful throughout – sometimes with the soulful focus of Roland Kirk, sometimes more open and cosmic, ala Prince Lasha – all depending on the special rhythms of the tunes. A superb record from the great Lloyd McNeil – one of the more obscure players of the spiritual jazz generation of the 70s, but an artist who always gave us his best whenever he walked into the studio! Here, the mood is a mix of modal and Latin elements, with a definite current of influence from Brazil – thanks in part to the presence of Dom Salvador on piano and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion – in a lineup that also features Cecil McBee on bass, and Claudio Celso on guitar. The real star, though, is clearly Lloyd – whose flute solos are some of his most complex, expressive on record – very soulful, but at a level that hardly recalls any other player we can think of – very fitting for the personal themes of the tunes. Titles include "Samba For The Animals", "Asha II", "Memory Cycle", and "Elegiac Suite For Elizabeth". LP, Vinyl record album

Lloyd McNeillWashington Suite (with bonus download) ... LP
Asha/Soul Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by DC flutist Lloyd McNeil – and one of the grooviest, too! Lloyd's work is always amazing – stretched-out, spiritual, and filled with life – but this time around, there's a definite groove to the record that's undeniable – an increased sense of rhythm, yet one that's still extremely creative, especially in the mellower moments – which are among some of the most compelling that McNeil ever recorded. The tunes were originally scored for a dance group, and feature a core combo with Lloyd on flute, some great Fender Rhodes from Eugene Rush, and sublime bass and drum patterns – mixed with some haunting added woodwinds, played by a combo that also features the legendary Andrew White. The whole record has a beautifully rhythmic quality, filled with throbbing, modal, soulful grooves – and tracks include "Home Rule", "City Triptych", "2504 Cliffborne Pl", "Just 71% Moor", and "Fountain In The Circle". MEVUnited Patchwork ... LP
Horo/Alternative Fox (UK), 1977. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99
A return to classic form for MEV – after some of the more tripped-out experiments of the early 70s – and a record that's also very much at home on the Horo label, thanks to a very freewheeling sense of improvisation! The founding trio of the group are at the core – Frederick Rzewski on acoustic and electric piano, Alvin Curran on synthesizer, piano, and vocals, and Richard Teitelbaum on synthesizers and shells – and they're joined by two key other musicians – Steve Lacy on soprano sax and Karl Berger on vibes, piano, and electric piano – players who really at a lot of creative dimensions to the music, not to mention a very strong sense of improvisation. The whole thing is a stunning mix of free jazz and electronics – with tracks that include "Fox", "Slugging Rocks", "Psalm", "What Is Freedom", "Cross Over Two", "Dewline", "Sea Line", and "Via Della Luce". Jackie MittooJackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King At Studio One ... LP
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 32.99
Killer funky organ – and 100% Dynamite! Jackie Mittoo is one of the all-time great organists – as essential to Jamaica as Booker T was to Memphis, or Jimmy McGriff was to New York. He's legendary these days as the player who completely transformed the Hammond sound with his unique Jamaican instrumental style during his early years with the Skatalites, and on his later solo recordings for Studio One. This set's probably the first time Mittoo's work has been properly packaged and remastered – and the folks at Soul Jazz have done an amazing job of selecting just the right tracks for such a project. The whole thing wails along with a stone rocksteady groove – with plenty of nice drum parts and funky rhythm bits underneath Jackie's soulful organ. If you dug the label's 100% Dynamite series, you'll really dig this one – and the whole thing's very much in the same vein. Tracks include "Drum Song", "Reggae Rock", "Hot Tamale", "Killer Diller", "Black Organ", "Stereo Freeze", "Wall Street", "Darker Shade Of Black", "Juice Box", and "Killer Diller". Nacka Forum (Goran Kajfes & Jonas Kullhammar)Sa Stopper Festen (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2020. New Copy ... $22.99
Fantastic sounds from Nacka Forum – a group with a name that might be a bit unusual, but which represents some of the strongest work on the Moserobie label in recent years! The lineup here is a quartet – Goran Kajfes on trumpet and mellophone, Johan Bethling on bass, Kresten Osgood on drums and vibes, and Jonas Kullhammar on tenor, alto, clarinet, and bassoon – and most group members play percussion too – working together in this freewheeling style that often begins with the more structured avant modes of the Moserobie scene, but which also often takes off in freer flights too – but at a level that's really balanced throughout the album, making the set quite different than more familiar albums of improvised jazz. But that's one thing we've always loved about Moserobie – and the standard really holds true here – on titles that include "Tigray", "Big L", "Ohsogood", "Haltefanden", "Epilog", and "Reboleira". PerceptionPerception ... LP
Futura/Souffle Continu (France), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99
The amazing first album from Perception – a French avant-jazz group that you might recognize from other performances from some of its members – a quartet lineup that includes Siefried Kessler on acoustic and electric piano, Didier Levallet on bass, Jean My Truong on drums, and Jeff Seffer on soprano, tenor, and bass clarinet! The style here is a bold step forward from the French free modes of the BYG/Actual recordings in 1969 – still very open, expressive, and improvised – but maybe given a bit more structure at times through the chunky use of the bass and drums, which is then echoed by Kessler on the keys, especially when he's electric – although at other moments the pianist can spin out with strong lines that rival the freedoms of Cecil Taylor! Seffer is amazing too – a player that we wish we knew more of, as his work on the record is tremendous, especially on tenor – really giving full depth to tunes that include "Debora", "Enitram", "Narcisse", "Chirato", and "Phenobarbital". RampCome Into Knowledge ... LP
Blue Thumb/Verve, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums of all time – a masterpiece of moody soul, spacey vocals, and jazzy vibes – all produced by the legendary Roy Ayers! Ramp take their name from the anagram Roy Ayers Musical Productions – and in a way, the group's the summation of all the genius that Roy had been cooking up on his own albums of the 70s – served up at an even higher level than before! The group boasts a unique two-female vocal style – sung together in a mode that had been used on Roy's own albums, but never this fully – all supported by some complex jazzy instrumentation, very heavy on the vibes and keyboards! Nearly every cut is fantastic – and the album has a strange off-kilter vibe that's totally amazing, and which has captivated soul fans for years – a blend of mellow and upbeat, complicated and straightforward that's totally great. Titles include the massive cut "Daylight", sampled famously over the years, plus "American Promise", "Come Into Knowledge", "I Just Love You", and the band's great cover of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", done in a way that's strangely both similar and different than Roy's own version! Steve ReidNova (with bonus download) ... LP
Mustevic Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An underground soul jazz classic – massive grooves from drummer Steve Reid, and exactly the kind of set that's gotten him so much attention in recent years! There's a mixture of freedom and tightness here that's really wonderful – some of the looser elements of the loft jazz generation, mixed with an inherent sense of rhythm that always set Reid's records apart from the rest – a groove that comes not just from his own pulsations on the drum kit, but also from the elliptical basslines of Richard Williams on electric and Luis Angel Falcon on acoustic, and the mixed organ and piano lines of keyboardist Les Walker. Joe Rigby brings some really sharp-edged sax work to the record, alongside the trumpet of Ahmed Abdullah, who really sounds wonderful here – bringing a spirituality to the album that's clearly borrowed from his time with Sun Ra. The album includes the great groover "Lions of Judah" – which has a very Ra-like quality – plus other great cuts "Long Time Black", "Sixth House", "Nova", and "Free Spirits Unknown". Carlo SavinaGoldsnake Anonima Killers (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Digitmovies (Italy), 1966. New Copy Gatefold ... $26.99
That's Goldsnake, not Goldfinger – but the soundtrack here from Carlo Savina is very much inspired by the James Bond music of the 60s – and served up in a great range of spy, mod, and crime jazz styles! The main theme gets a vocal reading at the start, but is transformed into other groovy instrumentals throughout – and balanced with some more mod jerk and shake-styled instrumentals that are heavier on electric bass and guitar, with overall results that may well be groovier than the best work that John Barry did for 007! LP features 12 tracks in all – and is an overlooked gem from the 60s spy spoof years. LP, Vinyl record album

Polysom (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
A killer set from Brazilian trombonist Marlon Sette – a player who seems likely to take on the legacy of Raul De Souza, through his own mix of jazz, funk, and soul! The set's all instrumental, with plenty of strong solos from Sette – working in a combo that also features Alex Meirelles on keyboards, and plenty of great bass from Kassin – who also produced and recorded the whole set with Mauro Araujo! The record's a very different funky outing from Kassin – who really lets Marlon do his thing, and shine strongly on titles that include "Soul Samba Rock Sou", "Vai Dancar Baby", "Grito Da Natureza", "Vidigal Montmartre", "Bate Pro Tito", "Sapato Cromo", and "Sua Beleza". Trunk (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $25.99
David Shire's wonderful score to The Conversation – a subtle mix of jazz and darker sounds that's one of the best things about this incredible film! Shire's definitely one of the cooler cats of American film scoring of the 70s – and with a groundbreaking project like this, he really shows his stuff – especially given that he plays these haunting piano solos himself throughout most of the score – really beautiful elliptical lines that are a great revelation, and make us like Shire even more! There's also a jazz combo in the film – a group that includes Pete Jolly on piano, Don Menza on tenor, and Conte Candoli on trumpet – and titles include "Theme From The Conversation", "Dream Sequence", "Plumbing Problem", "Finale & End Credits", "The End Of The Day", and "Harry Carried". Slum Village & Abstract OrchestraFantastic 2020 Vol 2 (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ne'Astra, 2020. New Copy ... $21.99 24.98
Slum Village teams up with the hip hop-reared jazz funk collective Abstract Orchestra for this worthy revisit/live band rework of the legendary Fantastic Vol 2 – a soulful Detroit hip hop classic and a vital piece of the late great J Dilla's legacy! A few cuts have prominent vocals, others have atmospheric backing vocals, but it's Abstract Orchestra's jazzy hip hop soul instrumentals – taking flight on the inspiration of the Jay Dee & Slum Village Detroit hip hop classic – that serve as the driving soulful spirit of this one. They are indeed a sizable crew more than earning the orchestra part of their name, but they know how to keep the core groove in a tight, headnodding mode befitting late 90s soulful hip hop, while finding space to soar within. It's also a testament to Dilla's original production that it makes so much sense fleshed out with horns, strings and more orchestral atmosphere. Vol 2 includes "Raise It Up", "Once Upon A Time", "Players", "2U4U", "Thelonius", "Who We Are" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A lost jazz-funk gem – originally recorded at Club Mozambique in Detroit in 1970, but not issued by Blue Note until the mid 90s! The set's right up there with Lonnie's classic Move Your Hand live set – as the tracks are long, free, and very funky, performed by a hip group that includes Joe Dukes on drums, Dave Hubbard on tenor, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, and George Benson on guitar. Lonnie's organ is harder than you'll ever hear it in later years – and tracks include "Scream", "Expressions", "I Can't Stand It", "Peace Of Mind", "Love Bowl", and "Play It Back". Som ImaginarioMatanca Do Porco (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Odeon/Polysom (Brazil), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic instrumental fusion from Brazil – a killer set from the combo who came from Milton Nascimento's scene, and often backed him up in the early 70s! Som Imaginario have a style that mixed the complex jazzy arranging styles of artists like Egberto Gismonti or Edu Lobo with some of the harder instrumentation of other progressive bands of the time – a post-Tropicalia style that's filled with heavy guitars, but also some more sensitive piano and keyboards too – all put together with the sense of spaciousness you might find in Milton Nascimento's music. No surprise, frequent Nascimento partner Wagner Tiso is the pianist for the group, and also wrote most of the tracks – and his soaring sensibilities really grace the album throughout. Titles include "Armina", "A 3", "A Matanca Do Porco", "Mar Azul", "A No 2", "Bolero", and "A (Nova Estrela)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Som ImaginarioSom Imaginario (1970) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Odeon/Polysom (Brazil), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
An incredible early album by this legendary Brazilian band with a strong late 60s/early 70s progressive flair! While not as countercultural as Os Mutantes or other Tropicalia artists, Som Imaginario shared with them a sense of pure musical inventiveness, and a love of psychedelic flourishes – and they had a lasting impact upon MPB through their backup work for Milton Nascimento on some of his best albums. This rare first album is a killer – and features fantastic organ and piano riffs, heavy guitars, and stunning songwriting, with lots of jazzy touches – all very much in the best mode of the Minas Geras scene that also birthed Nascimento and Lo Borges. Wagner Tiso is on keyboards, but the whole band's great – and the vocals are produced to a very cool effect – and titles include "Hey Man", "Poison", "Nepal", "Pantera", "Super God", and "Morse". ✨✧ Erwin Somer GroupErwin Somer Group ... LP
Universe (Netherlands), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A vibes, percussion, and Fender Rhodes masterpiece – and one that's got some really hard-driving percussion as well! The set's maybe the only one we've ever seen from Dutch musician Erwin Somer – both a vibist and a percussionist, working here strongly in both modes – in a very hip quintet that also features Helmig Van De Vegt on Fender Rhodes and Rudy Van Dijk on tenor – two equally obscure players, but who really make the whole thing great! Tracks are all quite long, and have that loose blend of funk and more exploratory elements we love on the Placebo records from the same time – and the Rhodes is often played with a much harder edge than used on American 70s jazz sessions. Titles include "De Yssel", "Kobus & Tim", "Maatje", "De Veerpoint". and a version of the Keith Jarrett tune "Grow Your Own". LP, Vinyl record album

Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Amazing! This lost Roy Ayers-produced gem from the early 80s has not only been one of the biggest sample records of all time, but it's also become one of the holy grails of the groovy record collecting scene! It's a stellar bit of jazzy soul with the same production vibe that's characterized Roy's best work – but made all the more sublime thanks to Sylvia Striplin's beautifully fragile and soulful vocals, which sound a bit like Minnie Riperton's at times – but also has a fuller, richer quality too. The record's got arrangements by Sylvia, Roy, and James Bedford (who also recorded for Uno Melodic), and it includes classics like "Give Me Your Love", "You Can't Turn Me Away", "Look Towards The Sky", "All Alone", and a great cover of Roy Ayers' "Searchin". A totally great follow-up to the first Seven Golden Men soundtrack – and one that features an equally wonderful range of jazzy and groovy modes from composer Armando Trovajoli! As before, the music is heavy on cool 60s touches – including some swinging wordless vocals from I Cantori Moderni, solo moments on organ or saxophone, and plenty of cool rhythms that seem to borrow from bossa nova – a quality that's emphasized a bit more here on a few tracks with batucada legend Lucio Perrone! Completely wonderful throughout – and with titles that include "Rossana", "Seven Golden Men", "Esquentando Os Tamborins E Cuicas", "7 Per Il Grande Colpo", "Cuica", and "Samba 1o Andamento".
