Jack McDuffAnother Real Good'Un (32 Jazz) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1989. Used ... $6.99
A nice little album of soul jazz organ tracks by Jack McDuff, and proof that he was always still burning strong! Unlike other Hammond players, who got a bit sloppy in later years, McDuff always kept things interesting, and managed to come up with some creative arrangements and soulful solos that pushed his work way past the usual soul jazz bag. This set was recorded with Cecil and Ron Bridgewater, Houston Person, and Cecil Brooks III – and features a nice set of longish groovers like "Another Real Good'Un", "Rock Candy", "Off The Beaten Path", and "Summertime", which McDuff always does nicely. Jack McDuffRe-Entry (32 Jazz pressing) ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1988. Used ... $3.99
In our opinion, Jack McDuff never made a bad album – and this excellent later session is proof of that statement! The album's got a horrible cover – we'll state that from the start – but it's still a great batch of soul jazz organ tracks, played tightly by McDuff, with a group that includes Cecil and Ron Bridgewater, plus Houston Person on tenor, and Grady Tate on drums. The album features a great remake of McDuff's legendary "Theme From The Electric Surfboard" – done here with a bouncing groove that makes the tune perfect for a jazzy stepper's set – plus the cuts "Cap'n Jack", "One Hundred Ways", and "Walkin The Dog". ✨✧ Zbigniew SeifertPolish Radio Jazz Archives 32 ... CD
Polskie Radio (Poland), Early 70s/1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from funky violinist Zbiniew Seifert – a musician who never got the same kind of acclaim on the US market as his Polish countryman Michal Urbaniak – but one who plays here with an equally groovy sort of sound! Like Urbaniak, Seifert has a way of using the violin in ways that almost seem more informed by saxophone phrasing – especially the more open, flowing lines of the post-Coltrane generation – and, as with Michal, he also plays a bit of saxophone as well – although that only happens on one of the album's tracks. The bulk of the CD features a stellar live performance from 1978 – in a group with the great Jaroslaw Smietana on guitar, plus Fender Rhodes from Janusz Grzywacz – on long-flowing tunes that include "Quo Vadis", "Spring On The Farm", "Bass Line A-Moll", and "Materna". CD also features two earlier live tracks – one with Seifert on alto sax in a quartet with Jan Jarczyk on piano – on "The Irreplaceable One" – another with a larger orchestra backing up his violin, on "Waiting For The Rain". Roland Kirk/Yusef LateefSeparate But Equal – Case Of The 3 Sided Dream/Part Of The Search ... CD
32 Jazz/Atlantic, Mid 70s. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
A 2 CD set that features two of the more enigmatic Atlantic Records jazz sides from the 70s! Case Of The 3 Sided Dream is a great 70s album by Roland Kirk – one that features him working on a lot of short tracks, in a pretty crazy style! A number of the tracks feature Kirk's uniquely quirky reed style in full effect – often processed with added studio techniques, in a very nice way. And along side that mode, the album's also got a beautiful warm side, with great writing, and a level of sensitivity that's sometimes missing from Kirk's earlier records. Lots of good tracks, including "Freaks For The Festival", "Echoes Of Primitive Ohio and Chili Dogs", "Dream", "Horses", "Side Four", "Portrait Of Those Beautiful Ladies", and "Conversation". Part Of The Search is one of Yusef Lateef's more ambitious albums for Atlantic – kind of a "history of jazz" in styles and expressions, performed with a large set of players that runs the gamut of talents available at the time. The set includes lots of tunes in rawer modes than you'd expect for Yusef – including Kansas City jazz, R&B, and even doo wop! Titles include "Soul's Bakery", "Oatsy Doatsey", "Big Bass Drum", "In The Still Of The Night", "Superfine", "Strange Lullaby", and "Rockhouse". CD

Woody ShawSolid ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1986. Used ... $4.99
One of Woody's last albums – a back to basics set, recorded with a group that include Kenny Garret on alto sax, Kenny Barron on piano, and guest guitar work on one track by Peter Leitch. The approach is straight modal hardbop – in the spirit of Woody's first recordings for Muse – and although his genius seems to have faltered a bit, his work here is still incredibly solid, much more so than most other trumpeters of his generation, and still expressed in a preference for easily grooving longer tracks. Titles include "Speak Low", "Solid", "There Will Never Be Another You", "It Might As Well Be Spring", and "The Woody Woodpecker Song". CD

✨✧ Rahsaan Roland KirkDog Years In The Fourth Ring (Rare Live Material & Natural Black Inventions: Root Strata) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1960s/1997. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest contributions made by the 32 Jazz label so far has been the rich amount of classic Roland Kirk material they've released on the market. The best of Kirk's work has been out of print for years, and like the folks at 32 Jazz, we think that's a darn shame – which is why we're extra-excited about a set like this! This nicely (and strangely) packaged 3 CD set features 2 CDs worth of previously unreleased live material – recorded in the years 1964 to 1975, by jazz recordist/archivist George Bonafacio. The material is amazing, and definitely gives proof to the claim that Kirk's live sets were even more amazing than his studio recordings. There's a wealth of great stuff here that really opens up an understanding of Kirk's 60s and early 70s years – and titles include "Rahsaantalk", "Misterioso", "Jammin With A Wolf", "Sister Sadie", "Blues For Alice", and a very groovy "Multi-Horn Medley". And if that's not enough, the 3rd CD of the set features the totally rare Natural Black Inventions album, which Kirk recorded for Atlantic. The record's got an amazing sound: Roland plays solo (mostly), and without the aid of overdubbing, to create these amazing soundscapes of multiple horns and circular breathing. It's filled with these fantastic throbbing pulsating reed lines, with one horn blowing rhythm, and one playing an adventurous solo – and both being blown live a the same time! Tracks include "Black Root", "Raped Voices", "Day Dream", and "Something For Trane That Trane Could Have Said". 3 great CDs of material by one of our favorite-ever reed players – and nicely priced, if we do say so ourselves! 32 Jazz, Mid 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nice 2CD set that brings together the last 3 albums that Roland Kirk recorded before his untimely death in the late 70s. The albums show Kirk moving between his own unique jazz vision, and an exploration into older traditional forms. While not his most immediately compelling works, the albums do have a richness that is surprising, and which shows that Kirk was never willing to rest on his much-touted laurels. Titles include "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", "Giant Steps", "Night In Tunisia", "Steppin' Into Beauty", "Dorthan's Walk", "Hey Babebips", and "J. Griff's Blues". CD

✨✧ Chris ConnorChris Connor Sings The George Gershwin Almanac Of Song (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key Gershwin compositions from the 20s and 30s, redone here with a moody, mellow, jazz-based approach – one that unlocks even more darkness in these tunes than you might expect! Instrumentation is by a number of different small groups – assemblages of players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Most on clarinet, Herbie Mann on flute, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al Cohn on tenor, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all working with arrangements by Sharon, Ray Ellis, and Stan Free. The album features a whopping 32 titles in all – with tracks that include "A Foggy Day", "Strike Up The Band", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Little Jazzbird", "My One & Only", "That Certain Feeling", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Liza", "Soon", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Strike Up The Band" and "Summertime", done in different takes. CD

Jon LucienI Am Now/Mind's Eye/Rashida ... CD
BMG (Germany), Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
Brilliant stuff – all 3 of Jon Lucien's landmark RCA albums on one 2CD set! Lucien cut his best work for RCA – but sadly, the albums were under-discovered for years, and are only now recently getting credit as the soul jazz landmarks they've come to be! On these albums, Jon's style is a haunting mix of soul, jazz, and Latiny rhythms, blended together with beautiful arrangements, and airy, souful production. All 3 albums are great, and all different in their own way, shifting Lucien's unique musical vision through a host of different songs pulled from obscure sources, or written by Lucien himself. There's a total of 32 titles on the 2CD set – and tunes include "Would You Believe in Me", the spacey "Lady Love", and the tracks "Kuenda", "Satan", "Love Everlasting", "Ghetto Song", "Soul Chant", "When the Morning Comes", "Dindi", "Love For Sale", "Who Will Buy?", and "Prayer for Peace". ✨✧ Jimmy LyonsPush Pull ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons had a legendary run of performances on record with Cecil Taylor – but he sounds equally amazing here as a leader – given the space to really stretch out in a 3LP set that brings together a landmark live performance from 1978! Lyons works here with some lesser-known names – a quintet that includes Karen Borca on bassoon, Hayes Burnett on bass, Munner Bernard Fennell on cello, and Roger Blank on drums – but all players really catch the fire from his horn, and open up in a way that starts with loft jazz inspiration, then really soars to the stratosphere! The live setting of the album – recorded in a cinema – brings a really great quality of "space" to the overall production – and you can really feel Lyons and the group working together as their sounds and performance echo throughout the theater. Titles include the 32 minute "Mary Mary" – plus "Tortuga", "Breakout", "After You Left", and "Push Pull". CD

A pretty popular one from The Crusaders! "Way Back Home" is proof that Wilton Felder was one of the most melodic members of the group, as it's a well-written instrumental with moody emotional tone that's got these African overtones that fill the track with sadness and longing. Cossi AnatzCossi Anatz – Jazz Afro-Occitan ... LP
Vendemiaire/Digger's Digest (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Really fantastic work from Cossi Anatz – a 70s French group who play something they term as "jazz Afro-Occitan" – a wonderful hybrid of modes that's even more compelling than you might think! At some level, the record follows from some of the experiments of Jef Gilson along these lines, and maybe a bit like some of the famous MPS jazz-meets-world recordings – but the style is also more freewheeling and open, done with more of an influence from Free jazz at times – and with rhythms that almost point the way more towards 80s experiments of this nature, particularly some from the Don Cherry side of the spectrum. The group features Michel Marre on trumpet in the lead – clearly the lead creative force, as he also wrote all the songs – and the lineup also features Jean-Marc Padovani on soprano sax and tenor, plus electric and acoustic piano, drums, and two more percussionists. Titles include "Al Coltrane", "Sarhaoui", "Bourree Du Ceor", and "Hortus". LP, Vinyl record album

The work's a mixture of clubby soul and funky fusion – done in the leaner style of the best AVI sides handled by Rinder & Lewis – and featuring some great moments in both the soulful fusion vein and the sweeter disco one! A totally great group – all hip leaders who've given us great records on their own in recent years, working together here as a combo with a really fresh sound of its own! The music draws on the strengths of the individual members, but also really pushes forward, too – as their unified voices create moments of pride and power that are maybe even brighter than recent records on own – a truly artful collective expression of the talents of Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, James Burton on trombone, Xavier Davis on piano, Vincente Archer on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums. There's maybe more angular lines than we might have expected, but still a deep sense of warmth as well – on titles that include "Essence Of Beauty", "Double Consciousness", "Going Somewhere", "Salvador Da Bahia", "Devil Eyes", and "Awaiting Change". The set's got Bob working with a slightly larger group than usual – his own trombone out front of the mix, swinging nicely in a mix of modern-styled grooves that almost remind us of some of Quincy Jones' charts from the time. Arrangements are all by Brookmeyer, and players include Thad Jones and Joe Newman on trumpets, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Hank Jones on piano, and Charlie Persip on drums. ABC, 1956/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
An excellent set that brings together 2 rare albums from the 50s! Sonny Criss At The Crossroads is an obscure 1959 session recorded by Criss in Chicago, and it's one of the only jazz records ever on the Peacock label, which put out mostly gospel and blues. Criss is joined by Joe Scott on piano, and the Chicago rhythm section of Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins, both fresh from the MJT+3. Great tone, warm solos, and a nice vibe throughout. Tracks include "You Don't Know", "Butts Delight", "Softly", and "Sylvia". Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets is a fantastic lost hard bop album, featuring Kenny Dorham leading a tight quintet that stars J.R. Monterose on Tenor. Monterose and Dorham are great, and really open up on the 5 tracks on the album – all of which are long enough to give the players plenty of room to blow. Probably one of the best jazz records ever recorded for ABC, and with the titles "The Prophet", "DX", "Tahitian Suite", and "Blues Elegante". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A nice 70s reissue two-fer that brings together two sides of jazz King Curtis cut for Prestige. The first set, The New Scene Of King Curtis finds him accompanied by Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Oliver Jackson – plus trumpet from Nat Adderley, billed on the back as "Little Brother" for contractual reasons! The 5 tracks are long and open, with less of King's tenor tricks, and more of a laidback Gene Ammons-ish style of blowing: "Little Brother Soul", "In A Funky Groove", "Have You Heard", "Da Duh Duh" and "Willow Weep For Me". The second LP is another rare early King Curtis jazz session – cut a few months later, but still before he settled down to his tight short soul instrumental recordings for Atlantic. The record is very much in the Prestige soul jazz style of the early 60s with Curtis set up nicely in a group that features Nat Adderley and Wynton Kelly again, but with Sam Jones and Belton Evans in the rhythm section, and it holds together in an easy grooving way. There's 6 tracks in this set: "Soul Meeting", "Lazy Soul", "All The Way", "Jeep's Blues", "What Is This Ting Called Love?" and "Do You Have Soul Now?". LP, Vinyl record album

Victor (Japan), 2015. New Copy ... $13.99
The other side of Monday Michiru – or, more appropriately, the early side of the great soul singer – given that her roots in jazz go very far back, to the time when she was the child of two very famous jazz musicians! This set has Monday reunited with her mother – the legendary pianist Toshiko Akioshi – who works exclusively on piano, in this wonderfully pointed, introspective style – while Monday both sings in a jazz style, and plays flute as well – an instrument she first used on record when she was about ten years old. The reunion is a wonderful one – and while Toshiko's every bit as great as you'd expect, we find ourselves falling in love with Monday even more than before – as her handling of the mellower material is beautiful, and opens up an even more deeply expressive side of her vocals than before. The record's got a bit of added bass and drums at points – and titles include "Frog", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Love & Life", "New Girl In Town", "Broken Dreams", and "Ain't Gonna Ask No More". Modern Jazz Quartet/Quartetto Di Milano/HungarianQuartet Is A Quartet Is A Quartet ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1964. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
The title's a bit misleading, because while the 3 groups on the session are all quartets, they're hardly similar in the associative way the record assumes! Side one features 4 tracks by the Modern Jazz Quartet – re-recordings of a few classics, plus one new one for the set – titles that include "Reunion Blues", "Winter Tale", "Concorde", and "Yesterdays". But side two actually features a string quartet – Quartetto Di Milano – playing the atonal "Funf Satze" by Anton Webern – plus the Hungarian Gypsy Quartet, doing a concert medley of traditional tunes in a violin-based way. So while the album may be some sort of attempt by the MJQ to further tie themselves to Europe – it's also kind of an unusual mix of jazz, avant classical, and folkloric styles! CD

The meeting of two key modern jazz talents in the late 50s third stream of jazz – heard on material pulled from three different Atlantic albums recorded at the Music Inn during 1956! The core of the set features the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre blowing alongside the Modern Jazz Quartet – in a spacious style that's very much in the spirit of Jimmy's own loosely-crafted groups of the time, and which makes surprisingly gentle use of piano, drums, and vibes next to his own gentle phrasing on clarinet. 2 of the 5 tracks with the MJQ add in Giuffre trio members Jim Hall and Ralph Pena – and titles for all include "A Fugue For Music Inn", "Serenade", "Fun",j "Da Capo", and "Fine". Added to these are 4 more titles that have Giuffre in the shifting company of other all-star players on tunes that take on a more traditional nature overall – longer jamming tracks that feature Rex Stewart, Pee Wee Russell, Teddy Charles, and Herbie Mann on titles that include "Blues In E Flat", "In A Mellotone", "The Quiet Time", and "Body & Soul". The last 3 tracks on the set return us to the Modern Jazz Quartet – working here on their own – on tracks that include "2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West", "Variation No 1 On God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Oh Bess Where's My Bess". Riverside, 1959. Sealed ... $19.99
Wes Montgomery's first album as a leader – a relatively obscure set that has him playing in a trio with Indianapolis bandmates Mel Rhyne on organ and Paul Parker on drums – a mode that strongly recalls Montgomery's roots in the Indy scene at the time! If you only know the later, famous Wes Montgomery with bigger charts, you'll be surprised to hear him here in a cooking little combo – the kind of group that made Mel Rhyne a local Hammond hero in Indy, although it seemed to take decades for him to get any sort of larger recognition. Mute, 1979. Used ... $9.99
The title might seem like a joke – given Throbbing Gristle's reputation for intense noise and dark sounds – but at another level, it's actually a great fit for the spirit of the record too! The sound here is a lot leaner than before – almost as if TG is focusing in on the best elements that made their earlier performances so great – exposing a hidden talent for a song, a groove, and even an occasional melody – in ways that almost refine and filter down the whole of German 70s electronics into a spirit of post-punk expression! Subject matter is still pretty darn dark, and vocals are as creepy as ever – thanks Genesis P – but there's also more of the electronics that Chris & Cosey would soon explore on their own. Titles include "20 Jazz Funk Greats", "Beachy Head", "Still Walking", "Tanith", "Convincing People", "Exotica", "Hot On The Hells Of Love", "Persuasion", "Walkabout", "What A Day", and "Six Six Sixties". Cory WeedsLive At Frankie's Jazz Club ... CD
Cellar Live (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
A Cory Weeds album that's really a cut above – given that this live session has the alto saxophonist joined by two great guests – Harold Mabern on piano and Terrell Stafford on trumpet! Both Mabern and Stafford get plenty of space to solo, and their contributions are wonderful – particularly Harold, who's rock-solid approach on the keys brings some of the focused energy he's more likely to use with some of the New York scene he records more regularly with – like Eric Alexander or Jim Rotondi. The rest of the group features Michael Glynn on bass and Julian MacDonough on drums – and titles include some well-chosen numbers from old school Blue Note vintage – including "Mood Malody", "Bluesanova", "Tolypso", "The Three Minors", "Up Tight's Creek", and "Consequence". VariousGroove Of ESSR – Funk, Disco, & Jazz From Soviet Estonia ... CD
Funk Embassy (Estonia), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $16.99
A really ear-opening compilation – one that brings together an insane range of music from Estonia – one of the smaller of the Soviet-era Eastern Bloc nations – and a surprising hotbed of groovy activity! The tunes here are definitely in the funk, disco, and jazz modes promised by the title – but they all often have very unusual approaches to the genres, too – weird ways of coming up with instrumentation, or arranging the rhythms, or laying down the vocals next to some wonderfully jazzy solos – but never in a way that sacrifices the soulful side of the spectrum, as these tunes have plenty of appeal to fans of more familiar West European funk from the time. Vocals are mostly in Estonian – which further makes the tunes sound unique – and titles include "Malestuste Teel" by Eesti Raadio Estraadiorkester, "Rasked Veosed" by Valter Ojakaar, "Keskoo" by Els Himma, "Naed Vaid Oma Silmi" by Tiiu Varik, "Uksi Kuid Vabana" by Marju Kuut, "Mets Neidude Vahel" by Collage, "Marss Eksprompt" by Uno Naissoo, "Leidmine" by Gunnar Graps & Magnetic Band, and "Keskoosamba" by Eesti TV & Raadio Estraadiorkester. Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Proof that there's few labels better at digging up an interesting groove than the mighty Jazzman imprint – home to a consistently great series of reissue 45s over the past 10 years or so! And as with other Jazzman volumes, it's not just the music that makes the set great, but the way it's put together – as Gerald Jazzman manages to sort tunes and lay them out one by one in a style that really changes up the groove – pushing our expectations with each new number, and really keeping things fresh throughout! This one's way way way more than just a pile of rare funk tracks – a truly loving document of one label's commitment to the depth of music in all its forms – served up over a batch of 12 rare tunes! VariousLefto Presents Jazz Cats ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 2018. Used ... $4.99
The jazz cats here are all pretty contemporary – younger musicians and combos on the current scene in Belgium – which turns out to have a fantastic array of really fresh sounds! Some groups play straight, some maybe use a bit more electronics – others are more acoustic than electric – and together, the tracks present an amazing underground that we'd never have heard otherwise – a really rich tapestry of talents who clearly draw keen inspiration from the 70s, but also really point the way forward – maybe with some of the post-jazz styles of music that we've been exposed to by Gilles Peterson over the years! Hats off to Lefto for doing such a great job of bringing these talents to light – in a set that includes "Steak In The Neck" by Madame Blavatsky, "Bombarda" by Combro Oro", "Introducing (part 3)" by Commander Spoon, "Lindbergh" by Schntzl, "De Vlijtige Kip" by Brzzvll, "Elevator" by LABtrio, "Takeoff" by Collective Conscience, "Hiza Hiza Hey" by Pudding Oo, "Hikari Park" by Mazzle, and "Oude Beren" by De Beren Gieren. ✨✧ VariousNew Jazz Poets ... CD
Folkways, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A seminal set of righteous underground poetry – a key bridge between the earlier work of Langston Hughes and some of the bigger spoken sides of the 70s by artists like Gil Scott-Heron or Wanda Robinson! As the title promises, there's a definite undercurrent of jazz in the work – but mostly in the subject matter of the poems, or in the riffing way the readers approach the material – since there's really no instrumentation at all to accompany the voices. There's a few names on here that you might recognize, but there's a lot more that you won't – and that makes the album a key look at this under-documented 60s scene. Titles include "Elvin Jones Gretch Freak" by David Henderson, "The Jackal Headed Cowboy" by Ishmael Reed, "Poem To Americans" by Gerald Jackson, "Poem To Ernie Henry" by Gloria Tropp, "Listening To Sonny Rollins at the 5 Spot" by Paul Blackburn, "African Memories" by Joel Oppenheimer, and "Autumn 1964" by Peter LaFarge. Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99
A really loving look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the Prestige Records label – a company that's famous for giving the world plenty of hardbop and soul jazz in the 50s and 60s, but which also helped lay the groundwork for American spiritual jazz to come! Long before Impulse, Strata East, MPS, and other labels were working with the music – and even long before Coltrane first started to soar into the cosmos – Prestige was letting its musicians really experiment with unusual rhythms, extended solos, and even some non-Western instrumentation – which resulted in a set of records that were years ahead of their time, and which still sound pretty darn mindblowing all these many years later! The package is a long-overdue entry in this hip series from Jazzman Records, and will also have you looking at your collection of older jazz in a completely new way – thanks to tracks that include "Summertime" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, "Love Theme From Spartacus" by Yusef Lateef, "Dorian" by Roy Haynes, "Rip A Dip" by The Latin Jazz Quintet, "Warm Canto" by Mal Waldron, "Organ Rounds" by Moondog, "Death & Taxes" by Walt Dickerson, "Song Of Delilah" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, and "Modette" by Roy Haynes – plus 70s tracks "I've Known Rivers" by Gary Bartz Ntu Troop and "Peace" by Idris Muhammad. An excellent collection of rare jazz grooves – the special kind of tracks that effortlessly mix up influences and styles, with a result that makes each and every number a real standout in the set! This is the third volume in the series, and the mix of music is wonderful – tunes from artists who are definitely jazz, and who have sophistication that goes way past familiar funky modes – into territory that's often far-reaching, and influenced by spiritual modes – even though all the tracks have a great little groove! Sublime live sounds from the great Nat Birchall – one of the most spiritual jazzmen currently working today! The set has Nat and his quintet really stretching out – playing his own great compositions, plus some Impulse and Strata East classics too – all at an open, searching, constantly creative level that really lives up to their inspiration from the Coltrane generation! Nat himself plays tenor and soprano sax – and the group features piano, vibes, bass, and drums – plus a bit of bells as well. The whole thing's very spiritual – like some lost Strata set from the 70s – and titles include remakes of Clifford Jordan's "John Coltrane" and Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" – plus the tracks "Sacred Dimension", "The Black Ark", "Return To Ithaca", and "Divine Harmony". They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! Early Sonny Rollins work for Prestige – recorded in the years 1951 and 1953, in a variety of settings! 4 tracks on the album features Rollins blowing with the MJQ, one more has him working with a Miles Davis group, and the last 8 feature a quartet with Kenny Drew, Percy Heath, and Art Blakey. The tunes are shorter than you might be used to hearing Rollins, but there's still plenty of power and imagination in the grooves – very economical solos, crafted with a great deal of imagination. No Free Beats is the jazzy soul-steeped beats for the graffiti documentary No Free Walls! A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. 2LP set features studio material – including "Saturday Morning", "Villa Tiamo", "Chi-Congo 50", "I Greet You With Open Arms", and "Fanfare & Bell". Chet BakerChet Baker & Crew ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... $6.99
Killer work from the late 50's by Chet! Although Baker's trumpet playing in the early part of the decade became known as one of the trademark "cool" sounds of the west coast, he started to move towards a sound that was a lot more hardbop at the end of the decade – as you'll hear on this tasty album. The session's got a great (and unlikely) batch of players accompanying Chet – like firey young soul jazz pianist Bobby Timmons, modal grooving bassist Jimmy Bond, and cool tenorist Phil Urso. The set's a great one, and pushes Chet's sound way past the usual stereotypes. Titles include "Medium Rock", "Lucius Lu", "Revelation", and "To Mickey's Memory". Plus, this excellent reissue CD also adds a number of bonus tracks recorded by the same group, but not issued with the original album. Two jazz giants of the 70s come together on this rare Italian recording from the late 60s – South African pianist Dollar Brand (Abdulla Ibrahim) and Argentine tenorist Gato Barbieri – both working here in spare duo formation, with edges that are a fair bit sharper than most of their later work! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds – a tremendous spirit that makes the record very different than freer jazz outings, and which maybe points the way towards some of the classic European tenor/piano recordings to come. Tracks are long, with a free flowing quality that's infused with soul and spirit – and titles include "Hamba Khale", "The Aloe & The Wildrose", and "To Elsa". CD

A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". Blue Note, Late 50s. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderfully hard-storming set – and a record that not only firmly put the Jazz Messengers on the map, but also set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The group here is the early version of the Messengers – almost co-led by drummer Art Blakey with pianist Horace Silver – and featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, just a few months before his early death – plus Lou Donaldson on alto and Curley Russell on bass. The presence of alto instead of tenor makes the sound slightly different than later incarnations of the group – and the overall approach is one that virtually defines the shift from straight bop to hardbop in the 50s – a mode that both Blakey and Silver were key in creating. A set that definitely lives up to its title – a stone stormer from Brainstorm – one of the tightest funky ensembles of their generation, and one of the few who could go deep while still laying down a groove! The set's got a perfect balance of modes – enough of the appeal of bigger mainstream funk acts of the time, but also some righteous undercurrents that really show the group's roots – both in the approach of the lyrics, and in the jazzy instrumentation of the backings – which often show a righteous side of the group that's mighty surprising! The record's one that just grows and grows with each new listening, and is put together with some great sharp-edged production by Jerry Peters – who has a way of showcasing all the most interesting elements, while still keeping things focused too. Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The album's a wonderful blend of jazz roots and more focused rock impulses – and has some subtle funky elements that's given it a wider sort of audience over the years – that special sound you'd find in a rare few Deram gems by artists like Mike Westbrook or Colosseum too. The drums are especially great – snapping out in a way that really holds things together, even when the instrumental solos really step out strongly – especially the organ, flute, and tenor – all of which retain a jazzy appeal. The vocals from Richard Sinclair are nice, too – never overdone, with almost a Robert Wyatt sort of reserve – and titles include "Golf Girl", "Love To Love You", "In The Land Of Grey & Pink", and the extended "Nine Feet Underground", which takes up all of side two. CaravanWaterloo Lily (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
London/Universal (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A bit of a shift in lineup for Caravan – but a set that has the group stepping out in all their fantastic proggy glory! This time around, Steve Miller provides some incredible work on electric piano, organ, and electric harpsichord – and the set also features some guest soprano sax work from Lol Coxhill, who'd later record wonderfully with Miller on Virgin Records – and whose presence here further underscores the qualities that make Caravan one of the jazziest groups of their prog generation! The classic core is wonderful too – Pye Hastings on guitars, Richard Sinclair on bass, and Richard Coughlan on drums – and the interplay between the latter two is fantastic, and really keeps the album driving onward. Titles include "Waterloo Lilly", "Songs & Signs", "Nothing At All", "Aristocracy", "The World Is Yours", and "The Love In Your Eye/To Catch Me A Brother/Subsultus/Debouchement/Tilbury Kecks". A great later album from samba singer Elizeth Cardoso – one that has a sophisticated sound that really matches her maturing vocals, thanks to a nice dose of jazz in the mix! Elizeth approaches the lyrics like a grand dame of Brazilian music – with a subtle sense of majesty touched by just the right of lived experience to really make the lyrics resonate – all warmed up by these really nice arrangements from Sergio Carvalho, who also plays a bit of acoustic and electric piano on the set too. Dori Caymmi arranges in a few points with Sergio, and also plays piano – and titles include "Prezado Amigo", "Viver Por Esperar", "Velha Poeira", "O Nosso Olhar", "Olha Moco", and "Bebeco E Doca". ChakachasJungle Fever ... CD
Polydor/Dusty Groove, 1972. Used ... $14.99
A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! The album's best known for its title hit "Jungle Fever" – an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that's peppered with sounds of female pleasure! The track was a worldwide hit, and continues to be a funky classic today – thanks to a heavy sample history, and a life in playlists worldwide – but the rest of the album's pretty darn great too, and even weirder. Some tracks mix easy Euro grooving with heavy conga, others have kind of an LA Chicano funk approach, and still others throw in some mad horns to complicate matters with nice jazzy riffing. Really great throughout – and maybe one of the best funky albums to ever come out on a major label! Titles include "Jungle Fever", "El Canyon Rojo", "Chica Chica Bau Bau", "Eso Es El Amor", "Ay Mulata", "Cha Ka Cha", "Latin Can Can", and "Yo Soy Cubano". CD

Nice stuff! Although the Chicago Gangsters are more known as a funky group, this single highlights two sides of their more mellow material – which is great! "I Choose You" is the famous Willie Hutch cut off The Mack, filtered through a rawer New Jersey style of soul. "Don't Be Gone" has a righteous "Love Jones" type of approach – with nice dramatic flourishes behind the main lyric, and some good jazzy riffing in the back! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. It's hard to stop the duo of Celiz Cruz and Johnny Pacheco at this point in their careers – as the two Latin legends really seem to have found a perfect way to work together – at a level that makes their albums together some of the high points of their later careers! Johnny's groove is great – tight salsa, inflected with lots of jazzy changes – and Celia finds great focus in the setting, trading vocals back and forth with Pacheco – over arrangements by Louie Ramirez, Javier Vazquez, and Rafael Quezada! ✨✧ Miles DavisKind Of Blue (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, and all those playings, the record manages to still sound fantastic – a truly inspirational piece of music that's long deserved all the attention it gets! The legendary group on the album includes John Coltrane on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass – working with Miles in a relatively modal style, with brilliant rhythm changes and a wonderful sense of space. The whole thing's sublime – and titles include "Blue In Green", "All Blues", "So What", and "Freddie Freeloader". CD

Columbia, 1967. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Another bold new direction for the legendary Miles Davis Quintet of the 60s – a set that has some of the angular styles of earlier albums, but also a bit more of the flowing grace to come in the electric years! A key illustration of this is the leadoff track "Prince Of Darkness" – which has a fluid sensibility that still never fails to floor us, even all these many decades later! The rest of the tracks are equally great – even when subtle – and by this point, the group of Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams were well earning their acclaim as one of the most groundbreaking groups in jazz. Titles include "Prince Of Darkness", "Masqualero", "The Sorcerer", "Pee Wee", and "Vonetta" – plus the odd inclusion of a vocal version of "Nothing Like You" – recorded 5 years before with singer Bob Dorough and arranger Gil Evans! The tune's an odd cap to this otherwise cohesive set – but we love it plenty too, and it somehow oddly fits! LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful blend of global rhythm and jazz – served up by bassist/berimbau player Serge Fabriano – a musician with equal ties to Paris and Guadeloupe, but who works here in a style that's completely his own! The music isn't as directly tied to other Guadeloupe rhythms as other Parisian projects of this nature – but maybe that's because the leader's handling bass, instead of piano or percussion – an instrument he uses very much upfront in the mix, to chart a path that the others then follow along with a strong sense of energy and improvisation! The group features, the great Alain Jean-Marie on piano, plus Edouard Labor on tenor and soprano sax, and Pierre Labor on alto – and although there are vocals on the record, the instrumentation seems to get even more time in the spotlight – on titles that include "Kosmos 1", "Kaladja Vivilo 2, "Karibean Suite", "Se Kon Sa", and "Manege". Pronit/GAD (Poland), 1971. New Copy ... $16.99
Killer Hammond from Polish player Piotr Figiel – a player with a really wonderful sort of groove! The album's got a vibe that's halfway between the Hammond antics of Alan Hawkshaw and the freer lines of American jazzmen like Jimmy Smith or Charles Earland – augmented by other cool production touches at points, which gives the record a very groovy late 60s sort of Euro feel! The vocal group Bemibek sing these cool wordless vocals on the tune "Bit Of Spring Bit Of Summer" – and guitarist Dariusz Kozakiewicz adds a nice degree of fuzz to a few other tunes too – tripping out nicely with Piotr's very fluid lines on the Hammond! There's a bit of strings on a few numbers, bringing in a nice cinematic feel – and titles include "Prelude In E Minor", based on the same Chopin changes as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B" – plus "Never On Tuesday", "Breakfast At Midnight", "Away I'll Go", "Absence", and "Piece Of Space". The second great album from organist Ceasar Frazier – a tightly grooving set that expands his sound a bit from the first! All the best elements are still in place here – including funky organ from Ceasar, production from jazz funk maestro Bob Porter, and a hip range of players that includes Horace Ott, Wilbur Bascomb, and Bernard Purdie. But the overall sound is somewhat shifted too – brought more into the tightly jamming jazz funk mode of the mid 70s – a bit richer and fuller overall, yet never in a way that's slick or sloppy – just more like some of the best later sides on Prestige or Fantasy from the same stretch. The record features a crazy version of the "Mighty Mouse Theme", a mellow take on the Isley's "Summer Breeze", Stevie Wonder's great "Living For The City", and the original "Funk It Down". A whole new flavor of Brazilian jazz – served up by pianist Amaro Freitas, whose work on the Pernambuco scene is a great cross-crossing of modes! Freitas has all the fluid, modern elements of some of the better-known Brazilian pianists from Rio and Sao Paulo – but he also mixes in some rootsier elements to his music – still using conventional jazz instrumentation, but with lots of complexity in the rhythms – so much so, it's really hard to put an sort of easy label on his approach! The work of bassist Jean Elton and drummer Hugo Medeiros is equally great – and the trio cascade together in a way that we can't imagine any other group matching at all. Fantastic funky organ from Jacky Giordano – a European keyboardist who seems to sparkle in just about every style he tries on! The set's a sound library record, barely issued at the time – but Jacky treats the proceedings like he's trying to audition for some top-level jazz organ position – using some moments that have a Verve Records jazz approach, others that are lighter and more melodic, and others that rival the keyboard grooves of sound library contemporary Alan Hawkshaw! There's just a bit of rhythm on most tracks, and most titles are quite short – but Giordano packs a lot into a little – on titles that include "Coffee Or Tea", "Latest News", "Hey Taxy", "Easy Drive", "Interrogation Point", "Pheasant Moment", and "Beating Around". Quartet (Spain), 1989. New Copy ... $24.99
A really wonderful jazz soundtrack by Herbie Hancock – recorded at the end of the 80s, a decade when Herbie was spending a lot of time on keyboards – but with a rock-solid older jazz vibe that really fits the vintage Harlem setting of the film! The music mixes larger arrangements with tighter piano tracks – the latter of which echo some of the hipper 30s styles of jazz from uptown, mixed with a few later elements of shading and tone – balanced out by larger charts at times conducted by Garnett Brown, who opens up Herbie's compositions in a really nice way. There's no players listed in the notes, but we assume that Hancock is on piano – and titles include "Dominique Seduces", "Snaggletooth Gambles", "Young Quick With Cigs", "Quick To Bed Quick To Rise", "Making A Deposit", and "Exploding Pitty Pat's". We can never get enough of Eddie Harris – and a record like this is a great reason why! Despite all the many different settings Eddie worked in at Atlantic, he still always stayed true to his roots – and a record like this is a perfect example of that – no electric horn, no funk, but a rock-solid sense of tone and timing that's unbelievable – and which makes the album a soulful treasure throughout! Of course, the group really helps a lot too – keeping things as in the pocket as Eddie's playing – with great rhythms from Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. And as an added treat, the set features killer work on trumpet from Ray Codrington – a player who we only know from the JFK Quintet albums – but who's an equal killer here. A seminal session from the St Louis scene of the early 70s – one that was humming nearly as much as Chicago was with the AACM at the time! As with the larger organization in the Windy City, St Louis had the Black Artists Group – of which Julius Hemphill was a key member, forming fresh new ideas in improvisatory jazz with players who went onto have an undeniable impact on the global scene as well. This album's one of the standout recordings of the Black Artists era at its best – a record produced by Hemphill, but equally balanced between his own alto and flute, the trumpet of Baikida Carroll, cello of Abdul Wadud, and drums of Phillip Wilson – plus a bit of added baritone from Haimet Bluiett. The rhythms are quite open, but there's also a nice sense of structure to the record too – a bridge between spiritual and free jazz that prefaces the impact that both Hemphill and Bluiett would have on the New York loft jazz generation. A great little set from Leroy Hutson – proof that he was still going strong through all his years at Curtom! The vibe here is a bit different than his first few records, and you might be suspicious with Leroy wearing a disco shirt on the front – but the sound is wonderful, and only shows Hutson blossoming into a more sophisticated singer, songwriter, and producer – one with a great ear for the careful balance needed for the modern soul generation! The shift is a bit like Roy Ayers on his late 70s work for Polydor – and Hutson is definitely on a par with Ayers in our book – we'd always put the two side by side for the strength of their work in the 70s. This brilliant British collective never lets us down – and here, on their majestic fifth album, they seem to soar towards the heaven even more – with a righteous spirit that comes through from the very first note, and which never seems to let up at all as they spin out some long, beautiful tracks that are filled with heavenly soul! In a generation where other groups are maybe reworking the spiritual jazz modes of the 70s, Ill Considered are finding a space that's completely their own – unabashedly open to new modes of expression, and in a way that creates a beautiful balance between darkness and light! At the start, the bass work of Leon Brichard seems to be the guiding force at the core of the tunes, but the drums of Emre Ramazanoglu take over more once things get going – all while the unrelenting reed work of Idris Rahman just keeps burning brightly, as Satin Singh fills in all the spaces with his percussion. As with other gems in the Three Blind Mice catalog of the time, there's a nicely different approach to the record – jazz that's neither avant, nor too electric – and recorded with a sound that's sympathetic and never sloppy, spacious but never sleepy – a really fresh approach that creates very unusual, individual sounds throughout.
