CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Miles DavisBags Groove (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1954. Used ... $4.99
Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! The title track on the album is a key reading of "Bag's Groove", presented here in two versions, both recorded by a quintet that includes Milt "Bags" Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – carving out the tune in a nicely modern idiom. The rest of the set features work by Miles in a quintet with Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver – again with support from Heath and Clarke – on tunes that include 2 versions of "But Not For Me", plus early recordings of Sonny Rollins' standards "Oleo", "Airegin", and "Doxy". Miles DavisMiles Davis & The Modern Jazz Giants (20 bit remastering) ... CD
Prestige, 1954/1956. Used ... $7.99
A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! Most of the record features Miles Davis recording with a quintet that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on longer versions of "The Man I Love" (in 2 takes), "Swing Spring", and "Bemsha Swing". These sides have a great bop/modern approach that's a nice extension of the styles that Jackson and Davis were playing on Blue Note in earlier years. Also added to the set is one number from 1956 – a version of "Round Midnight" recorded in early sessions with John Coltrane on tenor, and the Red Garland Trio on rhythm – different than the rest of the tracks, but still quite nice! Phillip MitchellJust The Beginning – 20 Previously Unreleased Tracks Recorded In Muscle Shoals ... CD
Grapevine (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Landmark work from one of the greatest talents in southern soul – the mighty Phillip Mitchell, a key talent from the best underground work of the 70s! Mitchell recorded only a handful of records under his own name, but his contribution runs deep – given his amazing ability to pen a sophisticated tune that still delivered plenty of soul. And although it would be enough to simply collect the hard-to-find singles that Mitchell recorded over the years, this tremendous set goes even farther – to offer up 20 tracks recorded in the early and mid 70s – all of them done at Muscle Shoals, with a quality level that seems to even beat the other records we've heard from Mitchell! The set's tremendous – must-have release for any fan of southern soul, and an extremely well-done package that's far far better than its simple cover might indicate. Every track is a gem, and the CD's the kind that will finally give Mitchell his due as one of the greatest talents of the south – one of the few artists who was really helping to continue to develop a sound that would have been so easily trapped in the cliches of the 60s. Titles include "Be Strong Enough To Hold On", "Just The Beginning", "It Don't Hurt Me", "Here I Am Again", "Something For The Head", "If You Can't Give Her Love Give Her Up", "Make Yourself At Home", and "Trippin On Your Love". Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1953/1954. Used ... $3.99
A full length set that compiles earlier sessions cut under either the name of Thelonious Monk or Sonny Rollins – most of them together in the same group! At the time of recording, Monk was an established figure on the bop scene, but Rollins was still a fresh voiced up-and-comer – yet they work together beautifully here on an early take of "Friday The Thirteenth" which really benefits from Rollins' voicing on tenor, next to Monk's angular arrangement. The pair also perform "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want To Be Happy" with a quartet – twisting the familiar tunes into strongly Monkish territory – and the album's last 2 tracks, "Nutty" and "Work" are performed by Monk with a trio that includes Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. VariousDore LA Soul Sides Vol 2 – 20 Years Worth Of Elusive West Coast Dancers, Sweet Soul Ballads & all Points In Between ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Loads and loads of great group soul sounds from the LA scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a mix of upbeat groovers and laidback harmony tunes that show that the west coast city was every bit as great at handling soul groups as the scenes in Detroit or Philly! Apart from The Whispers – who were the big Dore label stars at the time – many of these other acts didn't break big east of the Rockies – which makes this whole collection a real treasure trove of great discovery – stunning vocals supported by superb arrangements and production, and a selection of tracks chosen with the usual Kent Records care! There's a few solo artists on the set, too – but the main focus is on groups, and titles include "Nothing Lasts Forever" by The Natural Resources, "Getting Back Into Circulation" by The Entertainers IV, "I'm Givin You Notice Baby" by The Fidels, "I Wanna Chance" by The Vows, "I Only Cry Once A Day Now" by The Puffs, "The Girl That I Loved" by Bobby & Eddie Unlimited, "Saigon To San Francisco" by Toussaint McCall, "Just A Little Ugly" by Gail Anderson, "Wind In My Sails" by The Superbs, "I Want YoU" by Dee Torres, and "My Pillow" by The Darlings. PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. Used ... $12.99
A sweet set of grooves from this always-great series – served up with a special focus on the kinds of snapping sounds that were making the scene in the early 80s! Nearly all the tracks on the set were recorded in 1983, and capture a special point in funky soul – a time when the music was really moving past familiar modes from the disco years, and coming across with a leaner, meaner groove that's plenty heavy on sweet beats and keyboards! Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. Celluloid/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Landmark material from the legendary Nigerian percussionist! NEPA is a great little album from Tony Allen – recorded in the mid 80s, but with a chunky groove that's very much in the style of his 70s Afro Funk work! The title track is one of Allen's best cuts ever – a really anthemic tune with a punchy hook that's as infectious as it is political – and other tracks on the set are equally nice, touched with some slight electronic bits, giving them a cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe! Titles include the long numbers "When One Road Close" and "NEPA (Never Expect Power Always)", in regular and dub versions – plus the great closing track "Olokun". LP, Vinyl record album

AmanazAfrica (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". ✨✧ Art Blakey & Thelonius MonkArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+ ... $18.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Blue Mountain EagleBlue Mountain Eagle (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $24.99
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album

Leo (UK), 2003. Used 2CD ... $12.99
Vocalist Ann Rhodes joins Anthony Braxton for this set – a 2CD package that features some pretty compelling improvisations by the pair! The first disc features "Composition 339" – a work that begins almost tentatively, with eerie non-verbal vocalizations by Rhodes moving alongside Braxton's sonorous reeds – sometimes blown in familiar saxophonic modes, other times almost coming across with an electronic sort of energy. "Composition 340" is on the second disc, and is somewhat more dynamic from the start – lots of vocal acrobatics by Rhodes, which are matched nicely by Braxton! CD

Compelling duets between Anthony Braxton and Chris Jonas – both playing a variety of saxophones, and coming together with energy that's often a bit more sprightly than usual for a Braxton record! CD1 features "Composition 255" – a perfect showcase for the energy of the pair – and CD2 adds in voice from Molly Sturges, which brings in a third layer of angular interplay! The second piece is titled "Composition 265", and it's a great counterpart to the first – a bit darker at points, but still quite lively and playful. CD

Just when we've thought we've heard everything Peter Brotzmann has to offer – out comes a record like this, and blows us away all over again! As you'd guess from the title, Brotzmann's working here in a Chinese setting – mixing with younger players we'd never heard before – including Li Tiequiao on alto and Scandinavian spring flute, and Xu Fengxia on zither, sanxian, and voice – a strange style of singing that really makes for an amazing moment on one track! The quartet also features Kristian Mondrup Nielsen on drums – and Brotzmann plays searing tenor, alto, and clarinet – but often changes his phrasing to meet the moods of the younger players – especially at moments when Fengxia is in the forefront. Amazing stuff – and the CD features titles that include "Deciduous Carnival", "Walking In Wu Men", "Beijing Legend", "798 Art District", "Moat", and "Feel As If We Were Visiting Our Country Of Birth". DVD features all these tracks, plus two more! CD

Rare work from Barry Brown – all material arranged and produced by Linval Thompson – including singles, dubs, and unreleased album tracks! There's a really unified feel to the work, despite the space of a few years – given that the Roots Radics handled backings at the Channel One studio, and Scientist mixed all the tracks at King Tubby's – with a nice dub undercurrent that really helps the rhythms float and dip along with Brown's vocals. Titles include "Please Officer (version)", "Ketch A Fire", "Can't Stop Natty Dread", "Free Dreadlocks", "Life Is So Funny", "Love Jah So", "Love Is Pure", and "You Don't Know Who To Trust (version)". 14 tracks on 7 singles – all packaged in a limited box! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Dave BrubeckTime Out (200 gram 4LP set – 45rpm vinyl) ... LP
Columbia/Classic, 1959. Sealed 4LPs (reissue)... $99.99
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty of waves with their creative yet swinging approaches to modern jazz – heard on a number of successful albums for Fantasy and Columbia in the 50s. But with this record, they really knocked one out of the park – blending Desmond's cool alto, Brubeck's unusual piano phrasing, Joe Morello's melodic drum work, and Eugene Wright's pulsating bass into a waltzing, almost modal groove that crossed over to many camps at the time! The classics "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo Ala Turk" were both hits on their own – but all titles are great, and include "Kathy's Waltz", "Strange Medow Lark", "Everybody's Jumpin", and "Pick Up Sticks".
