A very cool inner sleeve for CDs – perfect for storing them in LP-styled covers! The clear plastic sleeves are similar to the ones you get in Japanese Paper Sleeve packages – and they're great for using if you lose your sleeves from any of those, or if you've bought LP-styled CD packages from other outlets – and want something to protect the CD inside! CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

✨✧ Bill EvansPortrait In Jazz (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used ... $4.99
A classic set to feature the Bill Evans Trio with the great Scott Lafaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums! Listening to the set we're reminded of what always brings us back to Evans' playing – a quality that's often described as moody, but which is really is quite spry and lively throughout this set, without ever giving up it's lyrical approach. Titles are mostly standards – but really transformed by the touch of the trio – and tunes include "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Autumn Leaves", "Witchcraft", "When I Fall In Love", "Peri's Scope", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Spring Is Here", "Some Day My Prince Will Come", and "Blue In Green". CD features 1 bonus track! CD

Hampton HawesHampton Hawes Trio Vol 1 (20 bit mastering) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1955. Used ... $13.99
'Leaping brilliance on the keys from a young Hampton Hawes – a player who makes this record bristle with excitement from the very first note! The format is simple, but the presentation here is breathtaking – a rock-solid trio performance that shows why Hawes was one of the greatest talents on the keys to come out of the west coast in the 50s – one with the fluidity of some of the better-known crossover players of the era, but the harder edge and sharper notes of the boppers, plus just a touch of nascent soul jazz in the rhythms. Backing is by Red Mitchell on bass and Chuck Thompson on drums – and titles include "Hamps Blues", "Carioca", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Blues The Most", "Easy Living" and "All The Things You Are". Hot 8 Brass BandVicennial – 20 Year Of The Hot 8 Brass Band ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A tremendous tribute to one of the greatest brass bands on the Nola scene – a group who celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, and who are still going strong! The Hot 8 Brass Band have always been one of the funkiest groups on the New Orleans scene – and they've continued to win us over with their great releases for the Tru Thoughts label – records that take an old school street brass approach, and fuse it with some harder, funkier currents in the process – but all without ever losing any sort of Crescent City roots. And despite any fears you might have about tourist cliches, these guys are definitely far from that – as their approach is super-fresh, super-unique, and widely appealing to most fans of other funky styles too. The album features older recordings, remixed and reworked with sublime sound – and titles include great covers of "Sexual Healing", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and "Just My Imagination" – plus "Royal Garden Blues", "Get Up", "What's My Name", and "New Orleans After The City". Jackie McLean4, 5 & 6 (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1956. Used ... $5.99
An unusual title, but one that refers to Jackie McLean in quartet, quintet, and sextet formation – a growing lineup that develops along the course of the record, as new players are added into the mix with a casual, almost blowing session approach! The set begins with Jackie's alto set out in spare territory with Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plenty of space to solo on "Sentimental Journey" and "Why Was I Born" with sharp changes and deeply soulful tones that really push past the conventions of the tunes – and as the record moves on, Hank Mobley steps in on tenor and Donald Byrd on trumpet – expanding out the sound for nicely-blown versions of"Abstraction", "Confirmation", and "Contour". Phillip MitchellJust The Beginning – 20 Previously Unreleased Tracks Recorded In Muscle Shoals ... CD
Grapevine (UK), Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Landmark work from one of the greatest talents in southern soul – the mighty Phillip Mitchell, a key talent from the best underground work of the 70s! Mitchell recorded only a handful of records under his own name, but his contribution runs deep – given his amazing ability to pen a sophisticated tune that still delivered plenty of soul. And although it would be enough to simply collect the hard-to-find singles that Mitchell recorded over the years, this tremendous set goes even farther – to offer up 20 tracks recorded in the early and mid 70s – all of them done at Muscle Shoals, with a quality level that seems to even beat the other records we've heard from Mitchell! The set's tremendous – must-have release for any fan of southern soul, and an extremely well-done package that's far far better than its simple cover might indicate. Every track is a gem, and the CD's the kind that will finally give Mitchell his due as one of the greatest talents of the south – one of the few artists who was really helping to continue to develop a sound that would have been so easily trapped in the cliches of the 60s. Titles include "Be Strong Enough To Hold On", "Just The Beginning", "It Don't Hurt Me", "Here I Am Again", "Something For The Head", "If You Can't Give Her Love Give Her Up", "Make Yourself At Home", and "Trippin On Your Love". Presidents5-10-15-20-25-30 Years Of Love ... LP
Sussex, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
The early 70s sweet soul masterpiece by The Presidents – a great album that kicks off with a title track of that was a huuuuuuuge hit back in the day, but the full length album by the group just about never shows up! It's just beautiful stuff, with lots of tasty harmony soul tracks with production by Van McCoy, who also wrote and arranged the bulk of the material. The vocals are great and the strings soar pretty grandly, without compromising the group soul backdrop. Includes the big title hit, of course, plus "Gotta Keep Movin", "For You", "Sweet Magic", "This Is My Dream World", and "How Can You Say You're Leavin". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins With The Modern Jazz Quartet (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1951/1953. Used ... $4.99
Early Sonny Rollins work for Prestige – recorded in the years 1951 and 1953, in a variety of settings! 4 tracks on the album features Rollins blowing with the MJQ, one more has him working with a Miles Davis group, and the last 8 feature a quartet with Kenny Drew, Percy Heath, and Art Blakey. The tunes are shorter than you might be used to hearing Rollins, but there's still plenty of power and imagination in the grooves – very economical solos, crafted with a great deal of imagination. Titles include "Scoops", "Shadrack", "Mambo Bounce", "The Stopper", "I Know", and "No Moe". CD

Mal WaldronLeft Alone (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Bethlehem, 1960. Used ... $9.99
A beautiful album by Mal Waldron – recorded in 1960, after the passing of Billie Holiday, and a very loving tribute by Waldron, who was her accompanist for a number of years. The set moves way past the usual "Holiday songbook" mode, and features instead a dark batch of tracks, two written by Waldron – "Minor Pulsation" and "Cat Walk" – a third written by him and Holiday, the famous tune "Left Alone". Jackie McLean plays some fantastic alto sax on the CD's version of "Left Alone", and the rest of the tracks are trio tracks played by Waldron, Julian Euell, and Al Dreares. The set also features one very strange track – "Mal Waldron: The Way He Remembers Billie Holiday" – which is an interview with Waldron about Billie! And sure, there were many cash-in records after Billie Holiday died, but this is one of the best, and it comes from a very legitimate source! CD

Celluloid/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
Landmark material from the legendary Nigerian percussionist! NEPA is a great little album from Tony Allen – recorded in the mid 80s, but with a chunky groove that's very much in the style of his 70s Afro Funk work! The title track is one of Allen's best cuts ever – a really anthemic tune with a punchy hook that's as infectious as it is political – and other tracks on the set are equally nice, touched with some slight electronic bits, giving them a cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe! Titles include the long numbers "When One Road Close" and "NEPA (Never Expect Power Always)", in regular and dub versions – plus the great closing track "Olokun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Horacee ArnoldTales Of the Exonerated Flea ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. Very hip stuff, with titles that include "Benzele Windows", "Tales Of The Exonerated Flea", "Euroaquilo Silence", "Puppet Of The Seasons", "Sing Night Jar", and "Delicate Evasions". Moody magic from the great John Barry – a little-heard soundtrack for a late 60s Michael Caine thriller! Barry's working here in a style that's tense and evocative – mostly orchestral, but with solo guitar on many tracks stepping out front – setting the mood as Barry's orchestrations clatter around with the tightly-strung approach of his best work for the James Bond films! The score kicks off with a striking Shirley Bassey number called "My Love Has Two Faces" – and other titles include "The Meeting", "Statue Dance", "The Last Deadfall", and "Romance For Guitar & Orchestra". Billy BauerBilly Bauer Plectrist ... LP
Verve, 1956. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Guitarist Billy Bauer will long be remembered as one of the key players who helped create Lee Konitz's icy sound of the mid 50s – but apart from his work with Konitz, he barely made any other recordings, and this one album on Verve is the only one we know that has him as a leader! The session's rare as hen's teeth in any format – and it features Bauer's guitar in the lead, with rhythm backing by a trio that includes Andrew Ackers on piano, plus Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson. The set includes some nice originals by Bauer – like "Night Cruise", "Lincoln Tunnel", and "Moon Mist" – all of which are as evocative as their titles, and which show Bauer's style on the guitar to be one of the more compelling modernist ones of the 50s. 20th anniversary edition of the classic first solo album by Big L! It's got bedrock DITC production by Buckwild, Showbiz and Lord Finesse – perfectly framing the rhymes by Harlem's finest. Big L didn't leave a huge wealth of recordings before he was taking away from the world, but he started out strong, and this benchmark effort makes a pretty solid testament to his legacy. Alongside some of the period QB hip hop, this one is pretty close to the pinnacle of streetwise east coast 90s hip hop. 12 tracks in all: "Put It On", "MVP", "No Endz, No Skinz", "8 Iz Enuff", "All Black", "Danger Zone", "Street Struck", "Da Graveyard", "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous", "I Don't Understand It, "Fed Up Wit The Bullsh#t", and "Let 'Em Have It L". Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $24.99
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album

Early stuff from Dave – recorded back when his core trio featured a young Cal Tjader! Cal plays here on vibes and drums – and it's interesting to hear how much Latin and exotic influences he had even at this young age. His playing makes the tracks perhaps a bit more whimsical than the usual Brubeck outing, and the overall sound is a lot different than the late 50s work from Dave on Columbia. Cal even seems to play a bit of bongos at times – and titles include "Tea For Two", "Laura", "Body & Soul", "Lullaby In Rhythm", "Undecided", "Blue Moon", "That Old Black Magic", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" "I'll Remember April" and "Let's Fall In Love".
