CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

✨✧ Phillip MitchellJust The Beginning – 20 Previously Unreleased Tracks Recorded In Muscle Shoals ... CD
Grapevine (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Landmark work from one of the greatest talents in southern soul – the mighty Phillip Mitchell, a key talent from the best underground work of the 70s! Mitchell recorded only a handful of records under his own name, but his contribution runs deep – given his amazing ability to pen a sophisticated tune that still delivered plenty of soul. And although it would be enough to simply collect the hard-to-find singles that Mitchell recorded over the years, this tremendous set goes even farther – to offer up 20 tracks recorded in the early and mid 70s – all of them done at Muscle Shoals, with a quality level that seems to even beat the other records we've heard from Mitchell! The set's tremendous – must-have release for any fan of southern soul, and an extremely well-done package that's far far better than its simple cover might indicate. Every track is a gem, and the CD's the kind that will finally give Mitchell his due as one of the greatest talents of the south – one of the few artists who was really helping to continue to develop a sound that would have been so easily trapped in the cliches of the 60s. Titles include "Be Strong Enough To Hold On", "Just The Beginning", "It Don't Hurt Me", "Here I Am Again", "Something For The Head", "If You Can't Give Her Love Give Her Up", "Make Yourself At Home", and "Trippin On Your Love". ✨✧ Thelonious MonkMisterioso (Riverside) (20 bit remaster with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside, 1958. Used ... $5.99
A key classic from Thelonious Monk's years at Riverside – and an album that's as compelling as its haunting title! The session features Thelonious working with a great quartet that includes Johnny Griffin on tenor, playing these wonderfully angular lines; Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, working in well-rounded tones that add a lot of depth to the work; and Roy Haynes on drums, bringing in a playfully rhythmic spirit that really matches the tone of Monk's compositions – a wonderful quartet to interpret the thoughtful, angular, inventive numbers on the set – not just Monk's own tunes, but some killer arrangements of a few classics too. Tracks are all longish, and the album features key readings of "In Walked Bud", "Misterioso", "Nutty", and "Let's Cool One". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Evidence" and "Round Midnight". CD

✨✧ Thelonious Monk & Gerry MulliganMulligan Meets Monk (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1957. Used ... $9.99
An unlikely pair, but a great one here – and the record's one of those few magical moments where bringing together unusual partners actually works! Mulligan's cool hardly seems a match for Monk's angular modernism, but together the players seem to strike a middle ground that resonates with the strength of both – a sound that cuts a bit more edge on Gerry's normally smooth baritone, and which still lets Monk's keys flow into wonderful twists and turns. Rhythm is by the great bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Shadow Wilson – and titles include the Monk classics "Straight No Chaser", "Rhythm A Ning", "Round Midnight", and "I Mean You" – plus a version of Mulligan's "Decidedly". CD features 4 bonus tracks! CD

✨✧ VariousColemine Singles – 20 / 45 RPM ... CD
Colemine, Early/Mid 2010s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
An excellent compilation of the funky sounds of Colemine Records – a contemporary indie label/labor of love with roots in Oxford, Ohio – who've been putting out some of the best singles in the post-millennium funk underground for years! The label has been delivering solid funk 45s for years, and it's about time they collected 'em on tight compilation. We've only ever seen most of the tunes on the original 45s, and it's great to have so many top shelf funk tunes together at last – numbers by Jungle Fire, Orgone, Tee See Connection, Los Sospechos, Dojo Cuts, Jive Turkeys, Ikebe Shakedown, Geno Washington & The Ironsides and more. 20 tracks in all! Includes "Comencemos (Let's Start)" by Jungle Fire, "Don't Get Caught" by Droptones, "Black Mamba" by Tee See Connection, "Authoritay" by Alan Evans Trio, "Don't Stop" by Orgone, "City Heights" by Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, "Don't Throw Your Love Away" by Gene Washington & The Ironsides, "Like Yesterday" by Monophonics and more. ✨✧ Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk With John Coltrane (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Jazzland, 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An interesting little LP that compiles alternate takes from Monk's classic album for Riverside – Monk's Music – the session that featured the unique twin tenor lineup of John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins. The album features 4 different alternates of tunes from that set – "Nutty", "Epistrophy", "Functional", and "Off Minor" – plus 2 other tunes played by a quartet that features Monk, Coltrane, Wilbur Ware, and Shadow Wilson – on the tunes "Ruby My Dear" and "Trinkle Trinkle". A real odd one in the catalog, but with some great music! CD

PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of grooves from this always-great series – served up with a special focus on the kinds of snapping sounds that were making the scene in the early 80s! Nearly all the tracks on the set were recorded in 1983, and capture a special point in funky soul – a time when the music was really moving past familiar modes from the disco years, and coming across with a leaner, meaner groove that's plenty heavy on sweet beats and keyboards! Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. Celluloid/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Landmark material from the legendary Nigerian percussionist! NEPA is a great little album from Tony Allen – recorded in the mid 80s, but with a chunky groove that's very much in the style of his 70s Afro Funk work! The title track is one of Allen's best cuts ever – a really anthemic tune with a punchy hook that's as infectious as it is political – and other tracks on the set are equally nice, touched with some slight electronic bits, giving them a cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe! Titles include the long numbers "When One Road Close" and "NEPA (Never Expect Power Always)", in regular and dub versions – plus the great closing track "Olokun". LP, Vinyl record album

A important record from Joan Baez – one that has the singer expanding her sound, but in all the right possible ways – bringing in some Nashville elements to her folksy roots! The record features some larger backings arranged by producer Norbert Putnam – with bits of strings, The Memphis Horns, and some backup vocals – but most of a focus around the core combo of the album, which includes Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Pete Wade and Norman Blake on guitars. Stax, 1968. Very Good ... $19.99
Booker T & The MGs – definitely doing their thing on this late 60s cooker – and moving their instrumental sound into a whole new range than before! The album has a very groovy feel – nice and tight, with especially great organ and guitar lines – often tuned towards 60s hits by other soul artists, but reworked strongly by the group's wonderful rhythms, and turned into a really cooking batch of Memphis soul instrumentals! There's a few key original tunes on the set – like the title track "Doin Our Thing" – and the cuts "I Can Dig It" and "Blue On Green" – but the covers are equally great, and include versions of "Ode To Billie Joe", "You Keep Me Hangin On", "Expressway To Your Heart", and "Let's Go Get Stoned". ✨✧ Brighter Side Of DarknessLove Jones ... LP
20th Century, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A tremendous bit of harmony soul from Chicago – one of the few cases where the Windy City really gave the east coast a run for its money – and the landmark album from teen soul quartet Brighter Side Of Darkness! Although young, Brighter Side managed to bring a depth to their work that was way more than kiddie soul – a heartfelt, heartbreaking quality that was all adult, no matter how youthful the themes – and their vocals are a perfect contrast to the fuller arrangements from producers Clarence Johnson and Johnny Cameron. The set contains the group's classic "Love Jones", still one of the best fragile harmony tracks of the early 70s – plus loads of other great numbers like "I Owe You Love", "I'm A Loser", "Just A Little Bit", and a superb remake of "Summer Ride". Jubilee, Early 60s. Very Good- ... $19.99
Despite the "twisting" tag in the title – designed to cash in on the hit dance craze at the time the album was issued – this album's actually a nice batch of classic doo wop tracks by one of the craziest groups to come out of New York! The Cadillacs, despite having some mellow hits, were also a wild group who were sort of like an East Coast answer to the Coasters. This album's got some of their best crazy stuff – and titles include "Dum Dee Dum Dum", "My Girl Friend", "Sugar Sugar", "Speedo", and "Shock A Doo". LP, Vinyl record album

Doug CarnRevelation ... LP
Black Jazz, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early genius – his own work on organ and keyboards, never overdone and mixed perfectly with a righteous array of acoustic sounds from Rene McLean on alto and tenor and Olu Dara on trumpet – both players who soar to the skies on waves of energy begun by Carn! Wife Jean Carn sings on a number of tracks – with this heavenly style that's mighty righteous – every bit as soulful as her later work at Philly International, but in a very different way. The set includes Doug's great reading of "Naima" – plus other wonderful cuts that include "Power & Glory", "Feel Free", "Jihad", "Fatherhood", and "God is One". LP, Vinyl record album

Benny CarterSwingin' The 20s ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1958. Used ... $4.99
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". CD features 3 bonus tracks! CD

Chi Sound/20th Century, 1979. Very Good- ... $0.99
Later work by Gene Chandler – but a surprisingly great little set overall, and proof that Carl Davis was really stretching for greatness in the glory years of his Chi Sound label! Rather than rehash the styles he'd hit with on Vee Jay, Constellation, Mercury, or Brunswick – Chandler steps out here almost as a whole new singer overall – one with surprising sensitivity for ballads, and a maturing approach that almost reminds us of Walter Jackson's same stretch on the Chi Sound label. And like Jackson, Chandler also manages to move a bit into clubby territory too – with arrangements from Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders that are quite solid overall – and almost a Chicago take on Philly. Titles include "Do What Comes So Natural", "That Funky Disco Rhythm", "When You're #1", "Dance Fever", "Stay Here In My Heart", and "I'll Remember You". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic cover art on the front! The album's a crowning achievement for pianist Sonny Clark – a player who'd already brought greatness to the world before the record, but really knocks it out of the park during the session – leading a razor sharp lineup that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all coming together with some magic in the studio, crafting a sound that forever put Blue Note on the map! Tracks are long, open-ended, and almost effortlessly soulful – and titles include Clark's classics "Cool Struttin" and "Blue Minor", plus versions of "Sippin At Bells" and "Deep Night". Plus, this CD also adds 2 long bonus cuts – "Lover" and "Royal Flush" – both of which weren't on the original album! CD
