A very cool inner sleeve for CDs – perfect for storing them in LP-styled covers! The clear plastic sleeves are similar to the ones you get in Japanese Paper Sleeve packages – and they're great for using if you lose your sleeves from any of those, or if you've bought LP-styled CD packages from other outlets – and want something to protect the CD inside! Antistatic, and very well constructed. Record Care

CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

✨✧ Thelonious MonkMonk's Music (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1957. Used ... $3.99
A landmark in jazz – easily one of Thelonious Monk's greatest albums ever, and a magical crossroads of talents that brings together a variety of jazz traditions! The work is performed by an ambitious Monk septet that includes both Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane on tenor – and if you've ever doubted the brilliance of Hawk, this is the record to change your mind. The rest of the group is equally great – with Ray Copeland on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – all coming together with Monk to craft a perfect set of tunes that are virtually the definition of "modern jazz". Titles include "Abide With Me", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule With Nellie", and "Epistrophy". CD features 2 bonus tracks! CD

Wes MontgomeryWes Montgomery Trio (aka A Dynamic New Jazz Sound) (20 bit remastered with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside, 1959. Used ... $7.99
Wes Montgomery's first album as a leader – a relatively obscure set that has him playing in a trio with Indianapolis bandmates Mel Rhyne on organ and Paul Parker on drums – a mode that strongly recalls Montgomery's roots in the Indy scene at the time!. The groove is straight and simple, but the real charm is Wes' chromatic lines on guitar – already quite distinctive among his contemporaries, and allowed ample room to express their voice in this setting. Titles include "Ecorah", "Missile Blues", "Too Late Now", "Jingles", and "Whisper Not". CD

Sussex, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
The early 70s sweet soul masterpiece by The Presidents – a great album that kicks off with a title track of that was a huuuuuuuge hit back in the day, but the full length album by the group just about never shows up! It's just beautiful stuff, with lots of tasty harmony soul tracks with production by Van McCoy, who also wrote and arranged the bulk of the material. The vocals are great and the strings soar pretty grandly, without compromising the group soul backdrop. Includes the big title hit, of course, plus "Gotta Keep Movin", "For You", "Sweet Magic", "This Is My Dream World", and "How Can You Say You're Leavin". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousDore LA Soul Sides Vol 2 – 20 Years Worth Of Elusive West Coast Dancers, Sweet Soul Ballads & all Points In Between ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Loads and loads of great group soul sounds from the LA scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a mix of upbeat groovers and laidback harmony tunes that show that the west coast city was every bit as great at handling soul groups as the scenes in Detroit or Philly! Apart from The Whispers – who were the big Dore label stars at the time – many of these other acts didn't break big east of the Rockies – which makes this whole collection a real treasure trove of great discovery – stunning vocals supported by superb arrangements and production, and a selection of tracks chosen with the usual Kent Records care! There's a few solo artists on the set, too – but the main focus is on groups, and titles include "Nothing Lasts Forever" by The Natural Resources, "Getting Back Into Circulation" by The Entertainers IV, "I'm Givin You Notice Baby" by The Fidels, "I Wanna Chance" by The Vows, "I Only Cry Once A Day Now" by The Puffs, "The Girl That I Loved" by Bobby & Eddie Unlimited, "Saigon To San Francisco" by Toussaint McCall, "Just A Little Ugly" by Gail Anderson, "Wind In My Sails" by The Superbs, "I Want YoU" by Dee Torres, and "My Pillow" by The Darlings. AmanazAfrica (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". Horacee ArnoldTales Of the Exonerated Flea ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good- ... $9.99
A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. Very hip stuff, with titles that include "Benzele Windows", "Tales Of The Exonerated Flea", "Euroaquilo Silence", "Puppet Of The Seasons", "Sing Night Jar", and "Delicate Evasions". Billy BauerBilly Bauer Plectrist ... LP
Verve, 1956. Near Mint- ... $38.99
Guitarist Billy Bauer will long be remembered as one of the key players who helped create Lee Konitz's icy sound of the mid 50s – but apart from his work with Konitz, he barely made any other recordings, and this one album on Verve is the only one we know that has him as a leader! The session's rare as hen's teeth in any format – and it features Bauer's guitar in the lead, with rhythm backing by a trio that includes Andrew Ackers on piano, plus Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson. The set includes some nice originals by Bauer – like "Night Cruise", "Lincoln Tunnel", and "Moon Mist" – all of which are as evocative as their titles, and which show Bauer's style on the guitar to be one of the more compelling modernist ones of the 50s. ✨✧ Beastie BoysPaul's Boutique (20th Anniversary edition – 180 gram pressing & quadfold cover) ... LP
Capitol, 1989. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
The Beasties' masterpiece – and one of the original nightmares for sampling opponents everywhere – the cut & paste hip hop classic Paul's Boutique! The Dust Brothers unapologetic way of weaving very famous samples with soul, funk and film score obscurities would steal the show if not for the infectious, boisterous rhymes of the Beastie Boys – they couldn't possibly have cared less about alienating the massive frat boy fan base built with License To Ill, and it's a joy to behold. It's one of those mindblowing pop transformations on par with the Beatles (who the Beasties and Dust Brothers were so brazen to sample several times on this album) and the Beach Boys on the pop maturation scale from earlier hits to later artistry – even if the wild lyrics and deft back & forth rhymes by the Beasties are the antithesis of maturity. From classic rock dinosaurs to soul and disco classics, from the Jaws score to "Dueling Banjos", it all finds it's way into the beatcraft – and both mainstream pop and underground hip hop are better now because of this record. Tracks include "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump", "High Plains Drifter", "Shadrach", "Johnny Ryall", "Eggman", "Car Thief", "What Comes Around", the "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" suite and more. Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $24.99
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album
