James Brown20 All Time Greatest Hits! ... LP
Polydor/Universal, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 34.99
Not a classic from the early years of James Brown – but a later greatest hits package that's gone onto have legendary status – given all the key cuts it includes! Most numbers here are the shorter single versions – and together, they pack a hell of a punch – showing an especially strong focus on the best soul and funk years of the legendary Godfather Of Soul! Titles include "I Got You", "Sex Machine (part 1)", "I Got The Feelin", "Mother Popcorn (part 1)", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (part 1)", "Think", "Get Up Offa That Thing", "Hot Pants (part 1)", "Superbad (parts 1 & 2)", "Papa Don't Take No Mess (part 1)", "Payback", "Get On The Good Foot", and more! Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A very cool inner sleeve for CDs – perfect for storing them in LP-styled covers! The clear plastic sleeves are similar to the ones you get in Japanese Paper Sleeve packages – and they're great for using if you lose your sleeves from any of those, or if you've bought LP-styled CD packages from other outlets – and want something to protect the CD inside! Antistatic, and very well constructed. Record Care

CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Milt Jackson & Wes MontgomeryBags Meets Wes! (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1961. Used ... $4.99
A beautiful combination we'd like to hear more of – one that comes from the meeting of Milt Jackson's vibes and the guitar of Wes Montgomery – both recorded here in easygoing brilliance! The session's a nice break from the usual sound of both players at the time – and although Wes played a bit with vibes when working in The Montgomery Brothers, the Jackson approach here is a bit different – more soulful, and a bit more driven on by the rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones. Titles include the originals "SKJ", "Blue Roz", "Jingles", and "Sam Sack" – plus bonus tracks "Stairway To The Stars", "Jingles" and "Delilah (take 3 & 4)". CD

Abbey LincolnAbbey Is Blue (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used ... $3.99
Key early work by Abbey – no so much the "blue" album you'd guess from the title, but a session that's filled with the kind of anger and emotion that makes us love her so much when she's this good! The group here is very hip – an ensemble brought to the date by her then-partner Max Roach – with Max on drums, Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, and Julian Preister on trombone – all working with Abbey in a mode that's quite similar to her best appearances on Roach records from the same stretch! Titles include her amazing early version of "Afro Blue", plus "Lonely House", "Come Sunday", "Let Up", and a great version of Oscar Brown, Jr's "Brother Where Are You?" CD
(Out of print, small cutout notch through spine.)

Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk Trio (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1952/1954. Used ... $3.99
Key early trio material from Thelonious Monk – a record that features seminal recordings of important compositions, all done in sharply angular versions that showcase the best modern Monk touch on piano! As with a number of early Prestige LPs, the material here is pulled from 2 different sessions that were originally issued as smaller records – but there's a deeply unified sound to the record, and the raw early Monk sound is undeniably great! The trios here feature either Gary Mapp or Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey or Max Roach on drums – and titles include "Monk's Dream", "Little Rootie Tootie", "Bemsha Swing", "Trinkle Trinkle", "Blue Monk", "Just A Gigolo", and "Bye-Ya". Wes MontgomeryBoss Guitar (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1963. Used ... $1.99
Early greatness from Wes Montgomery – and a session that's got a gritty edge that takes Wes back to his Indianapolis roots! The album's one of the few of the time to feature the unsung Hammond hero Mel Rhyne – a player who worked with Wes at his start, but has only gotten stronger acclaim in recent decades as part of his comeback. Rhyne's a key force in the record – working alongside Montgomery's guitar and the drums of Jimmy Cobb – in a loose, open trio that has Mel participating as strongly in the rhythms as he does in the solo side of the album. Titles include a few Montgomery originals – "The Trick Bag" and "Fried Pies" – plus the tunes "Besame Mucho", "Dearly Beloved", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Canadian Sunset", "The Breeze & I", and "For Heaven's Sake". CD includes bonus tracks "Besame Mucho (take 2)" and "Fried Pies (take 1)". CD

O QuartetoAntologia Da Bossa Nova – 20 Anos Depois ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1977. Very Good+ ... $33.99
A beautiful album of jazzy vocal tracks with a definite bossa feel, recorded by the group O Quarteto – a harmony group whose style is very reminiscent of earlier Brazilian ones – like Os Cariocas and The Tamba Trio! The record's a sparkling batch of bossa tracks, produced with an electric groove that's sort of similar to some of the late 70s MPS material – with soaring harmonies, warm keyboards, and a killer mellow jazzy groove – the kind of sound that was probably overlooked at the time, but which really sounds great all these years later! Titles include "Ceu E Mar", "Vo Ceitar E Rolar", "Desafinado", "Moca Flor", "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", and "O Barquinho". Very nice, and one not to pass up! LP, Vinyl record album

PS Artbooks (UK), Early 50s. New Copy Book ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning work from the glory days of the 50s horror comic – issues of the legendary publication Adventures Into The Unknown – one of the first and most important comics to plumb the depths of supernatural and science fiction! The publication inspired countless imitators, but was always a cut above the rest – thanks to a careful editorial policy that really focused on strong stories and high quality artwork – at a level that makes these issues a delight to read all these many years later! This volume, like others in the PS Artbooks series, features beautiful color reproductions of issues that would cost you a fortune to buy in the original – all wrapped up in a high quality, hardcover package. Artists in these issues include Ogden Whitney, Ken Bald, Lin Streeter, Emil Gershwin, Al Camey, Edvard Moritz, WG Hardis, and others – and stories include "The Little People's Revenge", "The Vampire's Victim", "The Man Who Met His Own Ghost", "The Undying Brain", and lots lots more. 288 pages, hardcover, and full color. PS Artbooks (UK), 1953/1954. New Copy Book ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the amazing horror comics published by Harvey Comics in the pre-code years of the early 50s – and a publication that was noted for its wealth of creepy stories and equally chilling images! Harvey may have been the home to Casper the ghost, but on the horror tip they were something else entirely – publisher of some of the most gruesome material in the years before comics got cleaned up in the mid 50s – with some of the best artists as well! Some of these stories are a clear attempt to copy the more famous style of EC Comics, but the Chamber Of Chills material also has a charm that's all its own – a rough approach to stories, which often leads to wonderfully lurid artwork – handled in this volume by Bob Powell, Manny Stallman, John Giunta, Howard Nostrand, Lee Elias, Jack Sparling, and others – in stories that include "Dust Unto Dust", "Invasion", "Grave's End", "I Vampire", "Grim Years", "Credit & Loss", and more. 288 pages, full color, and hardcover. ✨✧ VariousNu Yorica ! – Culture Clash In New York City 1970-1977 (20th anniversary edition) ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A landmark collection – and one that virtually defined an entire generation unto itself! Back in the mid-90s, when this early Soul Jazz collection was first issued – there was a certain strain of Latin music that had been ignored for decades – that unusual fusion of Latin, soul, funk, and jazz that happened mostly in the New York underground of the 70s – at a time when salsa was reigning king, and some of the more soulful currents were getting lost in the shuffle. The work here is wonderful – and thanks to this set, finally has gotten its place in the history book – as a key moment when so many different scenes came together, and made some of the most groundbreaking Latin grooves of the 20th century! The set's got a wonderful book that's really a primer to hip Latin sounds of the 70s – and the 2CD set is filled with gems that include "La Trompeta Y La Flauta" by Cachao, "Gumbo" by Cortijo Y Su Maquina Del Tiempo, "Un Dia Bonita" by Eddie Palmieri and "Macho" by Machito Orchesta – plus "Las Negritas De Caranval" by Charlie Palmieri, "Mamey Colorao" by Ocho, "Aftershower Funk" by Joe Bataan, "Amigos" by Stone Alliance, "Babilonia" by Ricardo Marrero, "Anabaco" by Grupo Folklorico & Experimental, "Little Rico" by Bobby Vince Paunetto, "Condiciones Que Existen" by Eddie Palmieri, "My Friend" by Ricardo Marrero, and "Tornado" by Ocho. Brian Auger & The TrinityDefinitely What/Open (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Atco/Fuel 2000, 1969. Used 2CD ... $24.99
A Brian Auger double-header – two great albums back to back in a single set! First up is Definitely What – Brian Auger's first album away from singer Julie Driscoll – and a landmark batch of funky organ work that made big waves in both the rock and jazz worlds at the time! Auger's really stretching out here – getting past the simple R&B of his roots, and going into a bubbling funky style that's clearly touched by chromatic inspirations from Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith – both of whom are referenced by some of the song structures on the set. The album's filled with killer organ-based instrumentals – some lean and stripped down, others full and rich – and all of them coming across with a richly soulful sound that you'd hardly expect from a member of the British rock scene! Titles include "Day In The Life", "Red Beans", "Definitely What!", and his classic "Bumpin' On Sunset". Open is great stuff – one of the amazing early albums from the team of Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger – kind of a next-generation to the Brit beat group sound of the mid 60s – one that moves beyond simple R&B modes, to bring in more sophisticated soul and jazz touches! Driscoll's vocals are amazing – some of the boldest belted out in the British scene at the time – and Auger's Hammond work really cooks throughout – at a level that easily makes him one of the best UK organists to hit the scene, amidst some very heady company in the 60s. There's a few bluesy moments, but our favorites are the funky ones – especially the group's reading of "Season Of The Witch", which is tremendous. Other cuts include "In & Out", "Black Cat", "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph", and "Break It Up". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Red Beans & Rice (parts 1 & 2)", "Save Me", "I've Gotta Go Now", "This Wheel's On Fire", and "The Road To Cairo". CD

Fantastic music by one of the all-time greats – easily one of our favorite soul artists of the 70s, and a hell of a jazz musician too! The tracks here are all from Roy Ayers' landmark run at Polydor Records – a place where he turned his straight jazz sound of the 60s into a mix of spiritual, funky, and smooth-stepping grooves that are totally great! The collection brings together some of the key Ayers cuts that have broke big with the younger generation – some because of famous use as hip hop samples – and titles include "Mystic Voyage", "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", "Running Away", "Coffy Is The Color", "Don't Stop The Feeling", "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", "searching", "Gotta Find A Lover", and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine". Fantastic! This is a rare original Shandar pressing of this classic late Ayler recording – a record that's probably better known to people as one of the "Nuits De La Fondation Maeght" concerts issued under one title or another. The set's a stellar live performance, and one of his few hard jazz recordings from this time. Ayler's on tenor and soprano, and he's playing with Call Cobbs on piano and Mary Maria on soprano sax. Sonor (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $28.99
A very cool record from Luis Bacalov – and one with a sound that's quite different than some of his more familiar, more sentimental soundtrack material! This one's got a wild mix of modes – from moody, atmospheric tracks, to funky bits, to more tripped-out passages – all with instrumentation that feels much more like it's from the Piccioni or Umiliani camp than the usual Bacalov styles! The whole thing's one of the more obscure numbers in Luis' soundtrack catalog – but it may well also be one of the best, thanks to titles that include "Hello Quincey", "Tucumania", "Nago", "Pinha Tamburim", "Lisa G", "Members Only", and "Anagramma".
