CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

✨✧ Bill EvansBill Evans Trio At Shelly's Manne-Hole (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1963. Used ... $4.99
A great west coast live date from Bill Evans – one that showed that his magic on the keys was equally at home in LA as it was in New York! The session's especially noteworthy for the presence of drummer Larry Bunker – a great player who worked on countless recordings, both jazz and non-jazz, but who hits a new level here with the Evans Trio – one that almost matches that of Paul Motian for his sensitivity and lyrical interplay with Evans' piano and the bass of Chuck Israels! Titles include "Blues In F", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "The Boy Next Door", "Swedish Pastry", and "Round Midnight" and the bonus track "All The Things You Are". CD

Hampton HawesHampton Hawes Trio Vol 1 (20 bit mastering) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1955. Used ... $9.99
'Leaping brilliance on the keys from a young Hampton Hawes – a player who makes this record bristle with excitement from the very first note! The format is simple, but the presentation here is breathtaking – a rock-solid trio performance that shows why Hawes was one of the greatest talents on the keys to come out of the west coast in the 50s – one with the fluidity of some of the better-known crossover players of the era, but the harder edge and sharper notes of the boppers, plus just a touch of nascent soul jazz in the rhythms. Backing is by Red Mitchell on bass and Chuck Thompson on drums – and titles include "Hamps Blues", "Carioca", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Blues The Most", "Easy Living" and "All The Things You Are". Hot 8 Brass BandVicennial – 20 Year Of The Hot 8 Brass Band ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A tremendous tribute to one of the greatest brass bands on the Nola scene – a group who celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, and who are still going strong! The Hot 8 Brass Band have always been one of the funkiest groups on the New Orleans scene – and they've continued to win us over with their great releases for the Tru Thoughts label – records that take an old school street brass approach, and fuse it with some harder, funkier currents in the process – but all without ever losing any sort of Crescent City roots. And despite any fears you might have about tourist cliches, these guys are definitely far from that – as their approach is super-fresh, super-unique, and widely appealing to most fans of other funky styles too. The album features older recordings, remixed and reworked with sublime sound – and titles include great covers of "Sexual Healing", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and "Just My Imagination" – plus "Royal Garden Blues", "Get Up", "What's My Name", and "New Orleans After The City". ✨✧ Thelonious MonkMonk's Music (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1957. Used ... $3.99
A landmark in jazz – easily one of Thelonious Monk's greatest albums ever, and a magical crossroads of talents that brings together a variety of jazz traditions! The work is performed by an ambitious Monk septet that includes both Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane on tenor – and if you've ever doubted the brilliance of Hawk, this is the record to change your mind. The rest of the group is equally great – with Ray Copeland on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – all coming together with Monk to craft a perfect set of tunes that are virtually the definition of "modern jazz". Titles include "Abide With Me", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule With Nellie", and "Epistrophy". CD features 2 bonus tracks! CD

PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
The twentieth volume in this wonderful series – one we've been trusting for years for the best in 80s groove! The music here is all from the post-disco years – awash in sweet keyboards and boogie basslines – all stepping along at a pace that's mostly midtempo, with a groove that's much nicer than most of the mainstream club work of the time! The collection features a few bigger names, but most of the numbers are the kind of cuts that bubbled underground back in the day – and still sound super fresh all these many years later. Titles include "Can't Get Close To You" by Nicci Gable, "Stay With Me Tonight" by Richard Jon Smith, "Forever & Ever" by Juicy, "Don't Throw Away Your Love (ext)" by One Touch, "Pull My Love String" by Doc Shaw, "Sexy Body" by Magic Lady, "Liberated Woman" by Neddy Smith, "Stop Playing On Me" by Vikki Love with Nuance, "Fox On the Run" by Sky Trane, "We Can Go To Your House" by Maurice Messiah, and "Do What You Wanna Do" by Starpoint. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful girl group and solo sounds from vaults of Red Bird – that wonderful label founded by songwriting giants Lieber & Stoller in the 60s – stereo masters from '64-'66! A stunner of a set of soul tracks – self-described as "a collection of shameless oldies played in the golden era of Northern Soul!" The set features 20 tracks that broke big at the Wigan Casino – home to some of the most fervent action on the UK soul scene back in the late 60s – and as such, it's kind of an "instant classics" set that shows how even rare numbers could become super-huge with the UK soul dance set! Titles include "Little Miss Soul" by The Lovettes, "Till You Give In" by Bobby Patterson, "Sweet Sherry" by JJ Barnes, "It's A Woman's World" by The Gypsies, "Baby Reconsider" by Leon Haywood, "With My Love & What You've Got" by Jean Wells, "Mother Of Shame" by Loleatta Holloway, "Running Away From Love" by Skip Mahoney & The Casuals, "Ain't That Good Enough" by John Edwards, "Baby I Need You" by Lorraine & The Delights, and "Can It Be Me" by Mel Williams. ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyKnow What I Mean? (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful early work from Cannonball Adderley – and a record that's quite different than most of his better known sets from the time! The album's more spare and stripped-down than usual – with Cannon's alto in a quartet alongside Bill Evans on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. The style is almost more that of Evans than it is Cannonball – lightly lyrical, with a good sense of space – in a way that has Adderley playing out front very strongly, cutting some beautiful lines with his solos, in a really unfettered way! Titles include versions of two of Evans' tracks – "Waltz For Debby" and "Know What I Mean?" – plus nice moody takes on other material, like John Lewis' "Venice", Clifford Jordan's "Toy", and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye". CD features 4 bonus tracks too. CD

Tabu, 1978. Near Mint- ... $18.99
Anacostia make the move to Tabu Records for this sweet second set – and they seem to have picked up more of a groove along the way! The same elements as before are firmly in place here – production by Charles Kipps, with supervision from Van McCoy – but the groove is a bit more focused, in ways that slide out spaciously with that warmer modern soul feel that made Tabu a real up-and-comer of a soul label in the late 70s. There's hints of 80s groove on the record, but at an earlier, warmer stage – mixed with some mellow cuts that really send the album home! A remarkably strong trio set from Chicago heavy hitters Jeb Bishop, Jason Roebke and Frank Rosaly – Bishop compositions, some that have been in his arsenal for quite a while, so good for us that they've finally been recorded and with such an excellent couple of players! It must be said that it feels sharp and fresh and not like the fruition of a long brewing process, with ample space for improvisation along with the trio's impeccable sense of melody. Bishop plays trombone, Roebke is on bass and Rosaly is the drummer – each have played on many a top shelf jazz set the over the past decade or more and work together excellently here.
