CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

VariousBig In Wigan – 20 Northern Mammoths: From The Wheel To Keele ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 9.99
Big in Wigan, but big at Dusty Groove too – as the collection's a wonderful batch of rare soul cuts from the 60s! The set's self-described as "a collection of shameless oldies played in the golden era of Northern Soul" – but that's only part of the picture, as it's got a lot more to offer than that. The CD features 20 tracks that broke big at the Wigan Casino – home to some of the most fervent action on the UK soul scene back in the late 60s – and as such, it's kind of an "instant classics" set that shows how even rare numbers could become super-huge with the UK soul dance set! Titles include "Little Miss Soul" by The Lovettes, "Till You Give In" by Bobby Patterson, "Sweet Sherry" by JJ Barnes, "It's A Woman's World" by The Gypsies, "Baby Reconsider" by Leon Haywood, "With My Love & What You've Got" by Jean Wells, "Mother Of Shame" by Loleatta Holloway, "Running Away From Love" by Skip Mahoney & The Casuals, "Ain't That Good Enough" by John Edwards, "Baby I Need You" by Lorraine & The Delights, and "Can It Be Me" by Mel Williams. Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Mid 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99
A tightly grooving batch of dancefloor soul sounds from the 1980s – not the textbook disco you might expect from the title alone, but a double strength set of classic level groovers by BB & Q Band, Cheryl Lynn, Cashmere, Georgio, Glenn Jones and many more! Lean funky rhythms, some great little electro, boogie era production touches and other pivotal elements from the era, but with fresh soul vocals and soaring spirit, no doubt inspired by proper disco – and nice stuff from beginning to end! 2CDs with 10 full length jams each – including "All Night Long (She's Got The Moves I Live)" by BB & Q Band, "Lover's Lane" by Giorgio, "Not Tonight" by Junior, "Nail It To The Wall" by Stacy Lattisaw, "I Can't Lose With The Stuff I Use" by Khemistry, "Shake It Up Tonight" by Cheryl Lynn, "Shadows Of The Night" by Blue Feather, "Let The Music Turn You On" by Cashmere, "Funky Little Beat" by Connie and more. VariousMasterpiece Volume 20 – The Ultimate Disco Funk Collection ... CD
PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
The twentieth volume in this wonderful series – one we've been trusting for years for the best in 80s groove! The music here is all from the post-disco years – awash in sweet keyboards and boogie basslines – all stepping along at a pace that's mostly midtempo, with a groove that's much nicer than most of the mainstream club work of the time! The collection features a few bigger names, but most of the numbers are the kind of cuts that bubbled underground back in the day – and still sound super fresh all these many years later. Titles include "Can't Get Close To You" by Nicci Gable, "Stay With Me Tonight" by Richard Jon Smith, "Forever & Ever" by Juicy, "Don't Throw Away Your Love (ext)" by One Touch, "Pull My Love String" by Doc Shaw, "Sexy Body" by Magic Lady, "Liberated Woman" by Neddy Smith, "Stop Playing On Me" by Vikki Love with Nuance, "Fox On the Run" by Sky Trane, "We Can Go To Your House" by Maurice Messiah, and "Do What You Wanna Do" by Starpoint. Red Bird/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.98
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful girl group and solo sounds from vaults of Red Bird – that wonderful label founded by songwriting giants Lieber & Stoller in the 60s – stereo masters from '64-'66! The label came out of the girl group boom earlier in the decade, so some of the material blew up big on the charts while a great deal of it fell by the pop wayside. The thing is, ALL of it wonderful – sweet, soaring pop soul majesty from some of the best songwriters and loveliest voices of their time! Great singles by The Goodies, The Jelly Beans, The Ad-Libs, Ellie Greenwich, Evie Sands, The Butterflys, The Charmettes, The Young Generation and more – stuff that truly rivals The Wall Of Sound! ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyKnow What I Mean? (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful early work from Cannonball Adderley – and a record that's quite different than most of his better known sets from the time! The album's more spare and stripped-down than usual – with Cannon's alto in a quartet alongside Bill Evans on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. The style is almost more that of Evans than it is Cannonball – lightly lyrical, with a good sense of space – in a way that has Adderley playing out front very strongly, cutting some beautiful lines with his solos, in a really unfettered way! Titles include versions of two of Evans' tracks – "Waltz For Debby" and "Know What I Mean?" – plus nice moody takes on other material, like John Lewis' "Venice", Clifford Jordan's "Toy", and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye". CD features 4 bonus tracks too. CD

✨✧ VariousAmerican Folk Blues Festival – Live In Paris 20 Octobre 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1962. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully-recorded concert from early 60s Paris – one done as part of the legendary folk-blues tour, and featuring a great selection of musicians, all with introductions from Memphis Slim! Slim's a hell of an MC for the event, and really provides this warm context that seems to open up the singers and musicians – who play here in a style that's every bit as crucial and faithfully handled as some of the early 60s blues performances at Newport – with none of the fake modes you might fear from a performance of blues for European audiences. The 3CD package seems to capture the entire concert, even in the way that Memphis Slim helps move from artist to artist – and in addition to solo performances by John Lee Hooker, Shakey Jake, Willie Dixon, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, T Bone Walker, and Helen Humes – there's also a few numbers by the full ensemble of singers too. An excellent compilation of the funky sounds of Colemine Records – a contemporary indie label/labor of love with roots in Oxford, Ohio – who've been putting out some of the best singles in the post-millennium funk underground for years! The label has been delivering solid funk 45s for years, and it's about time they collected 'em on tight compilation. We've only ever seen most of the tunes on the original 45s, and it's great to have so many top shelf funk tunes together at last – numbers by Jungle Fire, Orgone, Tee See Connection, Los Sospechos, Dojo Cuts, Jive Turkeys, Ikebe Shakedown, Geno Washington & The Ironsides and more. 20 tracks in all! Includes "Comencemos (Let's Start)" by Jungle Fire, "Don't Get Caught" by Droptones, "Black Mamba" by Tee See Connection, "Authoritay" by Alan Evans Trio, "Don't Stop" by Orgone, "City Heights" by Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, "Don't Throw Your Love Away" by Gene Washington & The Ironsides, "Like Yesterday" by Monophonics and more. Tabu, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Anacostia make the move to Tabu Records for this sweet second set – and they seem to have picked up more of a groove along the way! The same elements as before are firmly in place here – production by Charles Kipps, with supervision from Van McCoy – but the groove is a bit more focused, in ways that slide out spaciously with that warmer modern soul feel that made Tabu a real up-and-comer of a soul label in the late 70s. There's hints of 80s groove on the record, but at an earlier, warmer stage – mixed with some mellow cuts that really send the album home! Titles include "Take It Or Leave It", "I Don't Need", "All For You", "Ain't Nothin To It", "You've Got Love On Your Side", and "Anything For You". LP, Vinyl record album

ArenaArena (180 gram pressing) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Crystal Clear/Roundtable (Australia), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 31.99
A heady set of jazz from the Australian scene of the 70s – a bit funky jazz, a bit harder jamming – and a record that's got a lot more edge than its contemporaries from the European scene! Ted White plays tremendous flute and alto sax here – the latter with a sharply spiritual energy that's quite unexpected, and which gives the record a lot more soul than the usual prog-influenced fusion date of the time – a quality that's even quite different than some of the other Australian jazz material of the 70s – which, when electrified, didn't always hold onto the sharpness of its acoustic properties. Keyboards are from Peter Jones, who's nicely restrained, but makes some great contributions – and the rest of the group features Charlie Gould on guitar, Bob Arrowsmith on bass, and Graham Morgan on percussion and drums. Titles include "Turkish Defunked", "Keith's Mood", "Scrichell Cat", "Journey In Three's", "Scope", "Duke", and "The Long One". LP, Vinyl record album

Horacee ArnoldTales Of the Exonerated Flea ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. Very hip stuff, with titles that include "Benzele Windows", "Tales Of The Exonerated Flea", "Euroaquilo Silence", "Puppet Of The Seasons", "Sing Night Jar", and "Delicate Evasions". ✨✧ Beach Boys20/20 ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Very Good ... $9.99
An understated masterpiece from The Beach Boys – a record that's probably best known for its inclusion of some key tracks from the Smile sessions – but an album that stands pretty darn nicely on its own! The group are really maturing here – and the mix of Smile-era songs and some of their later ones is really great – a wonderful follow-up to material explored on Friends, and a great hint at the genius to come on Sunflower. The album's essential listening if you dig post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys – especially before they hit their mix of nostalgia and indulgence in the 70s – and titles include the sublime "Cabinessence", plus "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Be With Me", "All I Want To Do", "I Want To Sleep", and "The Nearest Faraway Place". Searingly soulful work from Hamiet Bluiett – easily one of his greatest sessions of the late 70s, and a record that has a sense of focus that's sometimes missing from his other work! The group on the set includes Don Pullen, Fred Hopkins, Billy Hart, and Don Moye – coming together with a real cohesiveness behind Bluiett, and directing his musical visions with a strength that's clear from the very first note of the record. There's a sense of greatness here that cannot be denied – a key link in a heritage that includes Albert Ayler's best later moments, and some of the tighter early recordings of the AACM. Titles include "Flux/A Bad MF", "Happy Spirit", "Head Drake", and "Before Yesterday". LP, Vinyl record album
