Art BlakeyCaravan (20 bit remaster with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside, 1962. Used ... $4.99
One of the best non-Blue Note sessions from Art Blakey in the 60s – a really searing set that features the sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers – a group that's filled with legends who include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Reggie Workman on bass, and Cedar Walton on piano! The sextet format really pushes the energy of the group – and allows for even more wonderful horn interplay than before – while still allowing for lots of solo space for individual voices. Tracks are long and open, with a bouncing lyrical groove that's more soaring than some of the heavy-hitting earlier albums from Blakey, but no less pleasing – and possibly even a bit more soulful! Titles include "Sweet N Sour", "This Is For Albert", "Skylark", and "Thermo". CD

A very cool inner sleeve for CDs – perfect for storing them in LP-styled covers! The clear plastic sleeves are similar to the ones you get in Japanese Paper Sleeve packages – and they're great for using if you lose your sleeves from any of those, or if you've bought LP-styled CD packages from other outlets – and want something to protect the CD inside! Antistatic, and very well constructed. Record Care

CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Item ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Very high quality resealable plastic sleeves for your jewel case CDs! The sleeves are very well made, and crystal-clear – just as nice as some of those fancy LP sleeves you'll find for vinyl from Japan. Eddie CostaGuys And Dolls Like Vibes (20 bit remaster Japanese pressing) ... CD
Coral/Universal (Japan), 1958. Used ... $9.99
Forget the theme of this one – because the album's a lot hipper than you'd expect! Sure, it's one of those "jazz meets showtunes" albums – in this case, tunes from Guys & Dolls – but the group's a sharply modern one, and features the vibes of Eddie Costa in a quintet that includes Bill Evans on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – a lineup you can definitely expect to do way more than usual with the tunes! The Evans/Motian axis is especially strong, and frees the tracks from their usual readings – bringing Costa into territory that he rarely hits on record this well – a totall great sound on longish titles that include "Adelaide", "Guys & Dolls", "If I Were A Bell", "I'll Know", and "Luck Be A Lady". ✨✧ Jackie McLean4, 5 & 6 (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1956. Used ... $3.99
An unusual title, but one that refers to Jackie McLean in quartet, quintet, and sextet formation – a growing lineup that develops along the course of the record, as new players are added into the mix with a casual, almost blowing session approach! The set begins with Jackie's alto set out in spare territory with Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plenty of space to solo on "Sentimental Journey" and "Why Was I Born" with sharp changes and deeply soulful tones that really push past the conventions of the tunes – and as the record moves on, Hank Mobley steps in on tenor and Donald Byrd on trumpet – expanding out the sound for nicely-blown versions of"Abstraction", "Confirmation", and "Contour". Sonny RollinsSaxophone Colossus (20 bit mastering) ... CD
Prestige, 1956. Used ... $3.99
Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St. Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". Mal WaldronLeft Alone (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Bethlehem, 1960. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful album by Mal Waldron – recorded in 1960, after the passing of Billie Holiday, and a very loving tribute by Waldron, who was her accompanist for a number of years. The set moves way past the usual "Holiday songbook" mode, and features instead a dark batch of tracks, two written by Waldron – "Minor Pulsation" and "Cat Walk" – a third written by him and Holiday, the famous tune "Left Alone". Jackie McLean plays some fantastic alto sax on the CD's version of "Left Alone", and the rest of the tracks are trio tracks played by Waldron, Julian Euell, and Al Dreares. The set also features one very strange track – "Mal Waldron: The Way He Remembers Billie Holiday" – which is an interview with Waldron about Billie! And sure, there were many cash-in records after Billie Holiday died, but this is one of the best, and it comes from a very legitimate source! CD

VariousAmerican Folk Blues Festival – Live In Paris 20 Octobre 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1962. New Copy 3 CDs ... $18.99 29.99
A beautifully-recorded concert from early 60s Paris – one done as part of the legendary folk-blues tour, and featuring a great selection of musicians, all with introductions from Memphis Slim! Slim's a hell of an MC for the event, and really provides this warm context that seems to open up the singers and musicians – who play here in a style that's every bit as crucial and faithfully handled as some of the early 60s blues performances at Newport – with none of the fake modes you might fear from a performance of blues for European audiences. The 3CD package seems to capture the entire concert, even in the way that Memphis Slim helps move from artist to artist – and in addition to solo performances by John Lee Hooker, Shakey Jake, Willie Dixon, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, T Bone Walker, and Helen Humes – there's also a few numbers by the full ensemble of singers too. Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 9.99
Big in Wigan, but big at Dusty Groove too – as the collection's a wonderful batch of rare soul cuts from the 60s! The set's self-described as "a collection of shameless oldies played in the golden era of Northern Soul" – but that's only part of the picture, as it's got a lot more to offer than that. The CD features 20 tracks that broke big at the Wigan Casino – home to some of the most fervent action on the UK soul scene back in the late 60s – and as such, it's kind of an "instant classics" set that shows how even rare numbers could become super-huge with the UK soul dance set! Titles include "Little Miss Soul" by The Lovettes, "Till You Give In" by Bobby Patterson, "Sweet Sherry" by JJ Barnes, "It's A Woman's World" by The Gypsies, "Baby Reconsider" by Leon Haywood, "With My Love & What You've Got" by Jean Wells, "Mother Of Shame" by Loleatta Holloway, "Running Away From Love" by Skip Mahoney & The Casuals, "Ain't That Good Enough" by John Edwards, "Baby I Need You" by Lorraine & The Delights, and "Can It Be Me" by Mel Williams. AnacostiaAnacostia (1978) ... LP
Tabu, 1978. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Anacostia make the move to Tabu Records for this sweet second set – and they seem to have picked up more of a groove along the way! The same elements as before are firmly in place here – production by Charles Kipps, with supervision from Van McCoy – but the groove is a bit more focused, in ways that slide out spaciously with that warmer modern soul feel that made Tabu a real up-and-comer of a soul label in the late 70s. There's hints of 80s groove on the record, but at an earlier, warmer stage – mixed with some mellow cuts that really send the album home! Titles include "Take It Or Leave It", "I Don't Need", "All For You", "Ain't Nothin To It", "You've Got Love On Your Side", and "Anything For You". LP, Vinyl record album

ArenaArena (180 gram pressing) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Crystal Clear/Roundtable (Australia), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 31.99
A heady set of jazz from the Australian scene of the 70s – a bit funky jazz, a bit harder jamming – and a record that's got a lot more edge than its contemporaries from the European scene! Ted White plays tremendous flute and alto sax here – the latter with a sharply spiritual energy that's quite unexpected, and which gives the record a lot more soul than the usual prog-influenced fusion date of the time – a quality that's even quite different than some of the other Australian jazz material of the 70s – which, when electrified, didn't always hold onto the sharpness of its acoustic properties. Keyboards are from Peter Jones, who's nicely restrained, but makes some great contributions – and the rest of the group features Charlie Gould on guitar, Bob Arrowsmith on bass, and Graham Morgan on percussion and drums. Titles include "Turkish Defunked", "Keith's Mood", "Scrichell Cat", "Journey In Three's", "Scope", "Duke", and "The Long One". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare early single from Italian singer-songwriter Franco Battiato – and in a melodic, sprawling psych pop style – with is something of a surprise given his more out there experimentation on later recordings! Billy BauerBilly Bauer Plectrist ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good ... $69.99
Guitarist Billy Bauer will long be remembered as one of the key players who helped create Lee Konitz's icy sound of the mid 50s – but apart from his work with Konitz, he barely made any other recordings, and this one album on Verve is the only one we know that has him as a leader! The session's rare as hen's teeth in any format – and it features Bauer's guitar in the lead, with rhythm backing by a trio that includes Andrew Ackers on piano, plus Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson. The set includes some nice originals by Bauer – like "Night Cruise", "Lincoln Tunnel", and "Moon Mist" – all of which are as evocative as their titles, and which show Bauer's style on the guitar to be one of the more compelling modernist ones of the 50s. Beastie BoysPaul's Boutique (20th Anniversary edition) ... CD
Capitol, 1989. Used ... $7.99
The Beasties' masterpiece – and one of the original nightmares for sampling opponents everywhere – the cut & paste hip hop classic Paul's Boutique! The Dust Brothers unapologetic way of weaving very famous samples with the deepest soul, funk and film score obscurities would steal the show if not for the infectious, boisterous rhymes of the Beastie Boys – they couldn't possibly have cared less about alienating the massive frat boy fan base built with License To Ill, and it's a joy to behold. It's one of those mindblowing pop transformations on par with the Beatles (who the Beasties and Dust Brothers were so brazen to sample several times on this album) and the Beach Boys on the pop maturation scale from earlier hits to later artistry – even if the wild lyrics and deft back & forth rhymes by the Beasties are the antithesis of maturity. From classic rock dinosaurs to soul and disco classics, from the Jaws score to "Dueling Banjos", it all finds it's way into the beatcraft – and both mainstream pop and underground hip hop are better now because of this record. Tracks include "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump", "High Plains Drifter", "Shadrach", "Johnny Ryall", "Eggman", "Car Thief", "What Comes Around", the "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" suite and more. CD
(Anniversary edition features remastering overseen by the band – and includes a free digital download featuring a track-by-track commentary by the Beasties!)

Vocalist Ann Rhodes joins Anthony Braxton for this set – a 2CD package that features some pretty compelling improvisations by the pair! The first disc features "Composition 339" – a work that begins almost tentatively, with eerie non-verbal vocalizations by Rhodes moving alongside Braxton's sonorous reeds – sometimes blown in familiar saxophonic modes, other times almost coming across with an electronic sort of energy. "Composition 340" is on the second disc, and is somewhat more dynamic from the start – lots of vocal acrobatics by Rhodes, which are matched nicely by Braxton! CD
