VariousLove, Poetry, & Revolution – A Journey Through The British Psychedelic & Underground Scenes 1966 to 1972 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
The real sound of the British underground at the end of the 60s – a stellar 3CD package that goes way beyond the oft-heard modes from the classic rock and progressive years! Sure, all the big names from those years are totally great – but they've also obscured the really rich tapestry of lesser-knowns who were working in London and beyond at the time – extremely inventive groups who work here in a blistering array of fuzzy, freaky, and mad mod styles! The book's got plenty of details on the 65 tracks included in the box set – more than enough info to help situate these really unique sounds, and no doubt start you digging for more in the future. Yet there's hardly any need to dig when you've got a set this great – a package that includes "Pretty Colours" by Deep Feeling, "Ebeneezer Beaver" by The Mirage, "Amanda Jane" by West Coast Consortium, "Love" by Shy Limbs, "Santa Lucia" by Respect, "Iridescent Butterfly" by Fat Mattress, "Story Book" by Alan Bown, "Just Another Day" by Neon Pearl, "I'll Be Late For Tea" by Blossom Toes, "Am I Glad To See You" by The In Crowd, "Busy Bee" by Tintern Abbey, "Fillin A Gap" by Paper Bubble, "Creation" by Beau, and "Hurry On Sundown" by Hawkwind Zoo. ✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Underground Volume 14 ... CD
Garden Of Delights (Germany), 1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Still plenty of greatness to unearth in the Psychedelic Underground – just the sort of tripped-out grooves we've really come to love from this well-priced series! Some of the work here is as heavy on jazzy elements as it is psychedelic ones – making for a great blend that's a bit more organic at times than you might expect – a world-ranging approach to the styles that really keeps things interesting, and which nicely breaks past simple cliches of psychedelia. Plus, many of the tracks are of European origin, and from the 70s – and they've got key proggish elements as well, especially on some of the jazzier numbers. Titles include "Summer 79" by Gravestone, "Arctic Ocean" by Pancake, "Back On My Hill" by Faithful Breath, "Ala Dalona" by Emma Myldenberger, "Question" by Joy Unlimited, "Bolero" by Aqua, and "Where Is Your Home Town" by Out Of Focus. Lebron Brothers OrchestraPsychedelic Goes Latin (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Cotique/Get On Down, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Amazing work from the New York underground of the late 60s – an album that's as magical as its title implies! Latin definitely goes psychedelic on this one – burning through a cloud of smoke with a brilliant blend of soul, jazz, and the hipper rhythms of the Spanish Harlem scene at the time. Many lyrics are in English, and the groove is a punchy blend of Latin Soul, boogaloo, and shing-a-ling styles – plus a storming descarga number to cap off the end of the set! Titles include "Descarga Lebron", "Mary Mary", "My Cool Boogaloo", "Mala Suerte", "Mi Mambo", "Tall Tale", and an original tune called "Summertime Blues" that's very different than the more famous hit! The immortal collection of psychedelic era garage rock and proto-punk gems – originally released on Elektra in 1972, when it influenced many of the great 70s underground pioneers, long before being reborn as an expanded box set in the late 90s. VariousRough Guide To Psychedelic Salsa ... LP
Rough Guide, Late 60s/2015. Very Good ... $11.99
Tripped-out Latin sounds, both classic and contemporary – served up in a collection that bristles with excitement throughout! The initial wave of this music came from a late 60s stretch when the cats up in Harlem were getting a bit more freewheeling than usual – picking up not just the funky touches of the Latin Soul years, but also some big influences from the rock underground as well – which were mixed in with heavy percussion and jazzy riffs to create a whole new groove! And while this side of Latin music was quickly suppressed in the generation that followed, it's had a bit resurgence in recent years – as you'll here from some of the younger artists in the collection, who fit perfectly into the track selection. Titles include "Cannabis" by Los Pambele, "Recordando Los Soneros" by Ray Perez, "El Son Del Carangano" by Fruky Y Sus Tesos, "Naci De La Rumba Y Guaguanco" by Grupo Fantasma with Larry Harlow, "Dub Y Guaguanco" by Quantic, "Vamos Pa Dakar" by Orchestra Rytmo Africa Cubana, and "Londres" by Nelson Y Sus Estrellas. Braen's MachineQuarta Pagina (plus bonus CD) ... LP
Liuto/Schema (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... $24.99
Stunning sound library material from Braen's Machine – one of the coolest, grooviest, and most obscure acts that were part of this underground Italian scene in the 70s! Quarta Pagina follows into even more trippier territory than the group's famous Underground album – a wild blend of psychedelic elements with hip soundtrack styles – the kinds of aspects that Piero Umiliani and Alessandro Alessandroni brought to the group, but with an even weirder feel. Track are all nice and compact – no overindulgent jams, but there's still a wonderful range of sounds in the short tunes – and most numbers are vocals, filled with guitars, keyboards, and loads of odd elements – but there also seems to be an Edda Dell'Orso-like singer in a few spots too. Titles include "Frode", "Addescamento", "Rimorso", "Il Covo", "La Vittima", and "Nel Penitenziario". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ O TercoO Terco (1972) (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Discos Mariposa (Argentina), 1972. New Copy ... $4.99
The second album from O Terco – the guitar-heavy power trio who were one of the hardest things going in Brazil during the early 70s! The album's got a style that's somewhat progressive, but which also still holds onto plenty of late 60s psychedelic elements – qualities both sweet and dark, often compressed into the arrangements with an approach that's a bit like some of the more underground South American rock of the time. Side one of the album features 5 shorter tracks – "Deus", "Voce Al", "Estrada Vazia", "Lagoa Das Lontras", and "Rock Do Elvis" – and the second side features the 19 minute suite"Amanheger Total" – a soaring, building number with lots of changes throughout! CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Tributo Ao Sorriso" and "Adormeceu". CD

Modern Harmonic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99
Something weird, and something very cool too – a set that brings together a whole host of strange and unusual tunes from the glory days of exploitation cinema! These cuts are all from a time when the b-movie underground was playing it fast and loose – trying to get more folks into the theaters with some ultra-sleazy themes – which resulted in wilder music than you might have heard in movies just a few short years before! The package is presented by Something Weird – the video company who've reissued lots of these exploitation films over the years – and the package is kind of a "best of" their on-screen efforts – as it also includes some spoken passages from films, which further make the tunes sound great. The package is divided up into themes – Psychedelic Hippie Freak Out, Rock O Rama Go Go, Deliriously Demented Ditties, and Sleazy Swinging Sounds – with work by Johnny Hawksworth, John Barry, The Group, The Love Generation, Joe Bisko, Alan Hawkshaw, Lee Dowell, The Penny Arcade, Billy Lee Riley, Betty Dickson, John Gabriel, Neil Patrick, Meg Myles, and The Huntington Astronauts. ✨✧ Blossom DearieThat's Just The Way I Want To Be ... LP
Fontana/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing record – one that we'd never part with! The session is one of Blossom Dearie's greatest records ever – a sublime set of tunes recorded in London, at the end of the 60s, with larger arrangements than usual, and a feel that's almost psychedelic. Backings were arranged and conducted by Brian Gascoigne – with a host of Brit underground jazz players that include Harold McNair, Ian Carr, Kenny Wheeler, and Ray Warleigh. More incredibly than that, though, is the set of tunes that Blossom wrote and chose for the record – tunes that have really dark edges, playful turns, and which go past the simplicity of some of her other work. The whole thing's truly amazing – really – and is a record that we've been coming back to again and again and again over the years! Titles include "I Know The Moon", "Long Daddy Green", "Hey John", "That's Just The Way I Want To Be", "Dusty Springfield", "Will There Really Be A Morning", and "I Like London In The Rain". ✨✧ Dr JohnGris Gris ... LP
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ ... $39.99
The great Dr John at his freaky deaky best – working here in a mindblowing mix of New Orleans roots and late 60s psych – all served up in some heady studio space and instrumental touches! The sound's unlike anything that ever went before – and is way better here than on some of John's later, straighter material – clearly the work of years of creative genius, as the Doctor, Mac Rebennack, draws on both his heritage from the Crescent City, and his years of work in the underground rock scene in LA! Harold Batiste handled the arrangements – and the record really paves the way for so many famous LA/New Orleans albums to come in the 70s – but never with results this mindblowingly trippy. The tracks are wild, funky, and messed-up New Orleans R&B filtered through a heavy dose of psychedelics – and titles include "Mama Roux", "Croker Courtbullion", "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", and the original version of "I Walk On Guilded Splinters".
