AmanazAfrica (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". Albert AmmonsBoogie Woogie Stomp/Boogie Woogie Blues (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... 12-inch
Blue Note, 1939. Sealed (reissue)... $8.99
One of the first records on Blue Note – a sweet single from the days when the label was dedicated to recording the best trad jazz players in the best possible setting! Albert Ammons really stretches out on both tracks here – and the 12" reissue presents the music in a format similar to the original heavy 78rpm release! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Blue Mountain EagleBlue Mountain Eagle (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $24.99
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis FullerBlues-Ette (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Savoy, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 19.98
A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being a sideman for most of the rest of his career?) The set's cut in that laidback blowing session mode of the Savoy hardbop years – with tremendous work from Benny Golson on tenor, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Al Harewood on drums – all working through easily-handled tunes that include "Minor Vamp", "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Twelve Inch". Think soul jazz with a slight touch of mysticism! LP, Vinyl record album

Jef GilsonJef Gilson Et Malagasy (4CD set) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99
An amazing blend of jazz and global elements – and some of the most exciting material ever from French jazzman Jef Gilson! Gilson was a modernist right from the start – an artist whose piano work of the 60s was on a par with Martial Solal, and who was already beginning to branch out by the end of the decade into a range of unusual projects! The material here has Jef really coming into his own – exploring the sounds and styles of Madagascar with his Malagasy group – one of the most important cross-cultural acts on the European scene of the 70s – with a power and presence that's only being fully appreciated today. This beautiful set brings together four rare albums by Gilson and the group – originally issued on his own Palm Records label, and lovingly repackaged by Jazzman with full notes on the music in both French and English. The style is quite unique – sometimes electrified a bit on tracks that feature guitar and Gilson on Fender Rhodes – sometimes more acoustic and organic when the percussion takes over a bit – and always with these wonderful reed passages that reach out with lots of spiritual energy, and tones that rival the best of the post-Coltrane generation in the US. Different albums include Malagasy/Gilson, Madagascar Now, Malagasy At Newport-Paris, and Les Touches Noires – the last of which features a number of unissued or rare tracks by the group. Really wonderful stuff – and work we'd put up there with the best MPS Jazz Meets World recordings, or 70s treasures by Mulatu, or some of Lloyd Miller's best! CD

A killer double LP of Jethro Tull doing their inimitable thing at Carnegie Hall in 1970! KullruskSpring Spring Spring Spring Spring (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2005. New Copy ... $26.99
Amplified saxophone genius from Kullrusk – a tremendous record that draws on a jazz legacy stretching back to Eddie Harris, John Klemmer, and Gil Melle, but one with a bold voice all its own! Reed leaders Jonas Kullhammar and Per Rusktrask Johansson play amplified alto, tenor, and clarinets on the record – blowing with that electrified feel that first crept onto Varitone sax albums of the late 60s – in a way that's sometimes soulful, sometimes experimental – really taking off from the use of the instrument on older Cadet and Atlantic albums! The rest of the quartet includes electric bass and drums from Sven Lindvall and Martin Jonsson, respectively – playing in a mode that's often got a nice funky undercurrent – really grooving the tunes wonderfully underneath the electric reeds. Titles include "Hellstone", "Children's Song", "He Ma'm", "Faidros", "Merguez", "Herkules", and "Indo". LP, Vinyl record album

Lord SitarLord Sitar (180 gram colored vinyl) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
EMI (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A sweet batch of grooves with a really trippy edge! The enigmatic Lord Sitar was one of a handful of late 60s sitar players who easily crossed into the world of groovy pop – blending traditional Indian instrumental styles with shorter pop tunes that had a wild psyche-out kind of feel. This album's a true gem – wonderful stuff with Brit easy orchestrations by John Hawkins that set the sitar lines in a setting that feels like a lost Peter Sellers soundtrack from the summer of love! Titles include "Black Is Black", "Blue Jay Way", "If I Were A Rich Man", "Emerald City", "Tomorrow's People", "In A Dream", and "I Can See For Miles". LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious MonkLondon Collection Vol 2 (180 gram clear vinyl) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
ORG/Black Lion, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
Very late work from the legendary Thelonious Monk – but surprisingly great as well! The session was recorded in London – as you might guess from the title – and although Monk's not working with his regular quartet with Charlie Rouse, he does interact wonderfully with a trio that includes Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass! Blakey's drums have this nice crispness that transforms the Monk experience – and some performances stretch out in a nicely inspired way. Titles include "Evidence", "Misterioso", "Crepuscle With Nellie", "I Mean You", "Criss Cross", and "Ruby My Dear". LP, Vinyl record album

Moody BluesMagnificent Moodies (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Decca/Esoteric (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
An incredible first album from The Moody Blues – way way different than any of their later high-concept work, and much more in the best soul and R&B-drenched material of the UK mod scene of the time! A number of cuts here are remakes of American soul tracks – including their stellar take on "Go Now" – and like some of the Moodies' best contemporaries, like Manfred Mann, the group really transform the material – and don't just offer up blue-eyed takes on the tunes. Instead, there's a free sense of play with the material – leanings that are definitely rockish on the solos, even though the overall vibe is quite soulful – and done with this tightly compressed style that's perfect for the vocals of the young Denny Laine – with a vibe that's further expanded by some nice use of echo in the production. Surprisingly wonderful – and very different than "Knights In White Satin" – with titles that include "Go Now", "I'll Go Crazy", "True Story", "Can't Nobody Love You", "I've Got A Dream", and "Let Me Go". LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Dees/Barbara AcklinChild Of The Street (Cosmologist ghetto soul reconstruction)/Am I The Same Girl (Cosmologist cut n shut reconstruction) ... 7-inch
Under The Influence (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $14.99
A really wonderful cut from the great Sam Dees – one of his deepest, most righteous numbers – and a track that has the same sort of vibe as a lost Curtis Mayfield number on Curtom! The reconstruction here spaces the tune out nicely – expanding and extending some of the more righteous elements – but in ways that really continue the groove and the lyrical spirit. "Am I The Same Girl" is Barbara Acklin's Chicago classic – the same groove as "Soulful Strut" – which seems to be layered in here to extend the tune past four minutes! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Eddie BoBaby I'm Wise – The Complete Ric Singles 1959 to 1962 ... CD
RIC/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
All the best early work of the New Orleans legend Eddie Bo – his first nine singles for the Ric label, both a and b-sides – along with originally unissued tracks as well! The work here spans a short time, but really shows an evolution in Eddie's style – from an initial start as a singer with a groove that was right up there with Crescent City bests of the R&B years, to a style that begins to have some of the funk and soul touches that Bo would explore more in the 60s! As usual with Ace, the presentation of the material is wonderful – very rich notes, and full details on the origin of all the tracks, even the unissued ones, which only appeared as 7" singles on a Record Store Day box a few years ago. Tracks include "Bless You Darling", "Roamin Titis", "Nothing Without You", "I'll Do Anything For You", "Check Mr Popeye", "Baby I'm Wise", "Hey There Baby", "Warm Daddy", "Dinky Doo", "It Must Be Love", and "Ain't It The Truth Now".
