Joan BaezBlessed Are (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP LP format
Vanguard, 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $14.99 22.98
A important record from Joan Baez – one that has the singer expanding her sound, but in all the right possible ways – bringing in some Nashville elements to her folksy roots! The record features some larger backings arranged by producer Norbert Putnam – with bits of strings, The Memphis Horns, and some backup vocals – but most of a focus around the core combo of the album, which includes Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Pete Wade and Norman Blake on guitars. Titles include "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Three Horses", "Last Lonely & Wretched", "Lincoln Freed Me Today", "Gabriel & Me", and "Fifteen Months". LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out Monster Disco OrchestaFar Out Monster Disco Orchesta (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP LP format
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $21.99
A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". Jef GilsonJef Gilson Et Malagasy (4CD set) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... CD CD format
Jazzman (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99
An amazing blend of jazz and global elements – and some of the most exciting material ever from French jazzman Jef Gilson! Gilson was a modernist right from the start – an artist whose piano work of the 60s was on a par with Martial Solal, and who was already beginning to branch out by the end of the decade into a range of unusual projects! The material here has Jef really coming into his own – exploring the sounds and styles of Madagascar with his Malagasy group – one of the most important cross-cultural acts on the European scene of the 70s – with a power and presence that's only being fully appreciated today. This beautiful set brings together four rare albums by Gilson and the group – originally issued on his own Palm Records label, and lovingly repackaged by Jazzman with full notes on the music in both French and English. The style is quite unique – sometimes electrified a bit on tracks that feature guitar and Gilson on Fender Rhodes – sometimes more acoustic and organic when the percussion takes over a bit – and always with these wonderful reed passages that reach out with lots of spiritual energy, and tones that rival the best of the post-Coltrane generation in the US. Different albums include Malagasy/Gilson, Madagascar Now, Malagasy At Newport-Paris, and Les Touches Noires – the last of which features a number of unissued or rare tracks by the group. Really wonderful stuff – and work we'd put up there with the best MPS Jazz Meets World recordings, or 70s treasures by Mulatu, or some of Lloyd Miller's best! CD

Le OrmeFelona/L'Equilibrio (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch 7-Inch
Philips/Universal (Italy), 1973. New Copy (pic cover)... $13.99
Quite a cool one from this hip prog band – a special single in a very cool cover – with great sound throughout! "Felona" begins with this cool bell-like chime – ringing out over strummed acoustic guitar with the tune's joyous lyric – before the whole thing then hits a heavier proggish keyboard and electric part in the middle! "L'Equilibrio" starts with a wicked keyboard line right at the start – as great as anything that Yes or Genesis might have produced at the time – especially the latter – and the solo near the end is worth the price of the whole single! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Alexis ZoumbasLament For Epirus – 1926 to 1928 (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP LP format
Angry Mom, Late 20s. New Copy ... $24.99
An amazing violinist from Greece, but one who recorded in New York during the 20s – on a host of rare 78rpm material presented in this lavish set! Alexis Zoumbas has a wonderfully melancholy feel to his instrument – a style that mixes virtuostic passages with these deeper, bluer qualities that are more folkloric – often supported with just a bit of work on acoustic bass for the recordings, or a bit of very cool cymbalom as well! The quality of the package and music reproductions puts this one right up there with collections of ethnic 78s on Tompkins Square or Honest Jons – and titles include "Alimbeis", "Tzamara Arvanitiko", "Syrtos Sta Dyo", "Frasia", and "Epirotiko Mirologi". Gary Calamar & Phil GalloRecord Store Days – From Vinyl To Digital & Back Again (paperback) ... Book Book
Sterling, 2010. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Somebody's finally gone out and written a book about one subject we can really get behind – the Record Store – and not only that, they've done a beautiful job with the entire package too! The book takes a look at the importance of the record store – not just historically, but culturally as well – with an especially important focus on the need for stores in the digital age, as a way of keeping both the music, and interest in the music, alive and well for generations to come! As you might guess from the subtitle, authors Calamar and Gallo have a bit of an agenda in their portrait – but they really pave the way with some great recollections of record stores past, incredible bits not just from folks who owned and worked in stores, but also from famous shoppers, artists, and collectors too. And even cooler, the book is filled with lots of great photographs – wonderful images of old stores in color and black and white, plus lots of great sidebar bits that help draw a focus on key issues in record retail. If you, like us, get a bit of a rush every time you walk into a record store, then you'll be sure to get an equal rush from this book – a wonderful tome that's one we can send home to our parents, and finally show them we've got a career worth a bit of respect! 238 pages, hardcover, and really beautifully done.
