Blue Mountain EagleBlue Mountain Eagle (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $16.99 24.98
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album

Linda JonesHypnotized (180 gram pressing – with bonus 7" single) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Loma/Soul Brother (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". Also comes with a bonus 45 – with "I Just Can't Live My Life" and "My Heart Needs A Break"! LP, Vinyl record album

KullruskSpring Spring Spring Spring Spring (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2005. New Copy ... $26.99
Amplified saxophone genius from Kullrusk – a tremendous record that draws on a jazz legacy stretching back to Eddie Harris, John Klemmer, and Gil Melle, but one with a bold voice all its own! Reed leaders Jonas Kullhammar and Per Rusktrask Johansson play amplified alto, tenor, and clarinets on the record – blowing with that electrified feel that first crept onto Varitone sax albums of the late 60s – in a way that's sometimes soulful, sometimes experimental – really taking off from the use of the instrument on older Cadet and Atlantic albums! The rest of the quartet includes electric bass and drums from Sven Lindvall and Martin Jonsson, respectively – playing in a mode that's often got a nice funky undercurrent – really grooving the tunes wonderfully underneath the electric reeds. Titles include "Hellstone", "Children's Song", "He Ma'm", "Faidros", "Merguez", "Herkules", and "Indo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Thelonious MonkLondon Collection Vol 2 (180 gram clear vinyl) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
ORG/Black Lion, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.98
Very late work from the legendary Thelonious Monk – but surprisingly great as well! The session was recorded in London – as you might guess from the title – and although Monk's not working with his regular quartet with Charlie Rouse, he does interact wonderfully with a trio that includes Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass! Blakey's drums have this nice crispness that transforms the Monk experience – and some performances stretch out in a nicely inspired way. Titles include "Evidence", "Misterioso", "Crepuscle With Nellie", "I Mean You", "Criss Cross", and "Ruby My Dear". LP, Vinyl record album

Savoy, 1945/Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 19.98
Well, it's not the whole Charlie Parker Story – but the album does feature some great material from a very famous session, recorded on 11/26/1945, originally issued on 78s, along with extra tracks, compiled here in one of Savoy's posthumous Bird LPs from the early 60s. The group includes Miles Davis on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Max Roach on drums – and titles include original and alternate takes of "Thriving From A Riff", "Meandering", "Koko", "Now's The Time", and "Billie's Bounce", all in early famous versions! Brian Reitzell30 Days Of Night (colored vinyl) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Ipecac, 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $38.99
One of more chilling modern horror soundtracks, for the creepy, unflinchingly dark, remote Alaska set 30 Days Of Night! It's composed by Brian Reitzell, whose had a pretty fascinating career – from being a drummer and percussionist for bands as varied as punk/power pop/glam stalwarts Red Kross and French soundcape gurus Air. Like some of his other soundtrack work, there's a moody, almost shoegazy haze to it – but this one is appropriately steeped in eerie, disquieting elements. Includes "Prelude/Last Day Of Sun", "Girl Bait", "Vampires On The Horizon", "The Bloody Fruits Of Barrow", "The One Who Fights", "Daybreak" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Sandra WrightWounded Woman (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Soul Brother (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
A lost southern soul album from the 70s – recorded down at Muscle Shoals by singer Sandra Wright, and originally intended for release on Stax Records – but never issued at the time! Sandra's a great singer – deep soul, but with a touch of class, too – and the approach here shows that maturing Muscle Shoals sound, recorded at the Broadway Studio by David Johnson – at a level that's a bit in the Ann Sexton side of the spectrum – a sparkling, sophisticated feel that almost reminds us of the best female soul coming from Detroit or Chicago at the time, but with a slightly deeper range. Stax issued a few singles, but never issued the full album – which makes this one even more of a treasure for collectors of that time! Titles include "Wounded Woman", "The Sha-La Bandit", "Midnight Affair", "I Come Running Back", "I'm Not Strong Enough To Love You Again", "Please Don't Say Goodbye", and "A Man Can't Be A Man". Cultures Of Soul, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 7 x 7" ... $34.99 49.98
A great US take on the Jam Up Twist sound of DJ Andy Smith – the groove he explored on a previous compilation in the UK – now served up here in a different lineup for the states! The music is a mad mix of R&B, jump blues, rockabilly, and other raw sounds from the tail end of the 50s – very much like the sort of territory that Keb Darge has explored on his excellent sets with Little Edith – and the kind of sounds that go way way beyond well-known hits from the period! Smith digs very deep in the crates, and gets some help with selections from Deano Sounds as well – on this smoking set that includes "Honey Child" by Johnny Williams, "What's My Chances" by Chuck Flamingo, "Thanks Mr Postman" by Bobby King, "Lonesome Shack" by Ernie Washington, "Doing All Right" by Eddie Cash, "Swingin & Surfin" by Les Brown Jr, "Ever Again" by Gene Woodbury, "High School Caesar" by Reggie Perkins, "Monkey's Uncle" by Ray Sharpe, and "Pack Shack & Stack" by Billy Nelson. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Put together by Numero Group's Numbero imprint, with packaging that's a sly parody of the dodgy rock compilations of yore, and the tracks include "In The Midnight Hour" and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" by Montaris, "Keep On Running", "I Can Only Give You Everything" and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" by Dearly Beloved, "Hey Joe" and "Mister You're A Better Man Than I" by Here And After, "Tobacco Road" and "Show Me" by Bobby & The Fantastics, "La Do Da Da" by Changing Times and more. VariousRough Guide To Latin Rare Groove (180 gram vinyl – with download) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rough Guide, 2014. New Copy ... $13.99 18.98
A wicked little set that really gets at the way that Latin record collecting has moved way past the usual sounds from New York, Puerto Rico, and Cuba – to embrace a whole host of styles from around the globe! In a world of collections that feature oft-reissued numbers from the Fania catalog, this set goes way further to dig up a whole host of gems from north and south of the border – and even a few from the other side of the Atlantic as well – mostly older numbers, but also including a few contemporary cuts that fit well alongside the vintage numbers. Pablo Yglesias handled the track selection, with the same quality he brings to other Latin projects too – and titles include "Bamba Cure" by Mario Allison, "No Pago Na" by Alfredo Gutierrez, "Esa Mujer" by Los Kenya, "Denisth" by Grupo 2000, "Funky Tumbao" by Setenta, "My Shingaling Boy" by Spanglish Fly, "Domingo Por La Manana" by Carlos Pickling, "Black Shadow" by Orchestra Dee Jay, "Pensamiento" by Piper Pimienta, "Do You Want To Be Free" by Gilberto Sextet, and "Chevere" by Joe Quijana. VariousRough Guide To Psychedelic Cambodia (with download) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rough Guide, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
Unusual Cambodian grooves from the psychedelic years – recorded at a time when the nation was getting plenty of influences from western sources! Many of the tracks here are cover versions – done with lots of echo on the surfish or fuzzed-out guitars – and recast with local lyrics that may well completely change the mood of the tunes – kind of a new Cambodian culture rising up in the wake of the nation's relationship to the Vietnam war. Recording details on most of the tracks is sparse, but that's also the charm of the material too – mysterious sounds from a scene that was all but destroyed by the Khmer Rouge, but recently revived in two more contemporary tracks included here. Titles include "Cyclo" by Yos Olarang, "Paem Nas Sneha" by Pan Ron, "Jam 10 Kai Theit" by Ros Seresyothea, "Bros Ey Kov Prerl" by Pan Ron, "Thgnai Kor Chrer" by Sin Sisamouth, and "Komlos Sey Chaom" by Ros Seresyothea. Also includes contemporary cuts – "Tiger Phone Card" by Dengue Fever and "Whiskey Cambodia" by The Cambodian Space Project. LP, Vinyl record album

Rough Guide, Late 60s/2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A mad mix of sounds that definitely lives up to the title – as sitars, tabls, and other traditional Indian instruments come into play with fuzzy guitars and freaky rhythms! The work here is partly from the 60s, partly from later years inspired by the roots of the style – and the collection mixes together music from a nicely diverse array of sources, all in search of a new genre that really comes together in the course of the album. Titles include "Chamber Of Dreams" by Jazz Thali, "Thillana" by Jyotsna Srikanth, "Moksha" by Ray Spiegel Ensemble, "A Mystical Morning" by Debashish Bhattacharya with John McLaughlin, "Dancing Drums" by Ananda Shankar, "Dance Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Dum Maro Dum" by Asha Bhosle, and "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" by Sunday Driver. Eddie BoBaby I'm Wise – The Complete Ric Singles 1959 to 1962 ... CD
RIC/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99
All the best early work of the New Orleans legend Eddie Bo – his first nine singles for the Ric label, both a and b-sides – along with originally unissued tracks as well! The work here spans a short time, but really shows an evolution in Eddie's style – from an initial start as a singer with a groove that was right up there with Crescent City bests of the R&B years, to a style that begins to have some of the funk and soul touches that Bo would explore more in the 60s! As usual with Ace, the presentation of the material is wonderful – very rich notes, and full details on the origin of all the tracks, even the unissued ones, which only appeared as 7" singles on a Record Store Day box a few years ago. Tracks include "Bless You Darling", "Roamin Titis", "Nothing Without You", "I'll Do Anything For You", "Check Mr Popeye", "Baby I'm Wise", "Hey There Baby", "Warm Daddy", "Dinky Doo", "It Must Be Love", and "Ain't It The Truth Now". Under The Influence (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
A really wonderful cut from the great Sam Dees – one of his deepest, most righteous numbers – and a track that has the same sort of vibe as a lost Curtis Mayfield number on Curtom! The reconstruction here spaces the tune out nicely – expanding and extending some of the more righteous elements – but in ways that really continue the groove and the lyrical spirit. "Am I The Same Girl" is Barbara Acklin's Chicago classic – the same groove as "Soulful Strut" – which seems to be layered in here to extend the tune past four minutes! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Boddie/Numero, 1960s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
Numero does it again – unleashing an amazing batch of work for the first time ever – all packaged in a very limited Record Store Day set! The collection features material that was pressed up at the tiny Boddie pressing plant in Cleveland – a wonderful range of local artists from the late 60s through the mid 80s – all served up with the usual Numero flair! The set's a rich discovery of sounds we'd never have heard otherwise – and although it's slanted heavily towards rare funk and soul, there's also some compelling indie rock sides too – especially some homegrown, dark-toned sounds from the 80s – clearly influenced by the styles in the UK underground. The set features 17 tracks in all – including "Don't Stop Smiling" by Jus Us, "Just A Dream" by Imperial Wonders, "Love Is On The Way" by Bill Spoon, "Let Me Go" by The Harmonics, "I'm Gonna Treat You Good" by The Donations, "Good For The Gander" by Hot Chocolate, "Woman You're Gonna Pay For This" by Wicked Lester, "The Voyage Of The Nautilus" by Russell Potter, and "Snakepit" by Berlin West.
