Albert AmmonsBoogie Woogie Stomp/Boogie Woogie Blues (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... 12-inch
Blue Note, 1939. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99 15.98
One of the first records on Blue Note – a sweet single from the days when the label was dedicated to recording the best trad jazz players in the best possible setting! Albert Ammons really stretches out on both tracks here – and the 12" reissue presents the music in a format similar to the original heavy 78rpm release! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Blue Mountain EagleBlue Mountain Eagle (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $24.99
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album

Barry BrownThompson Sound (7 x 7 inch single box set) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Hot Milk (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 7 x 7 inch ... $58.99
Rare work from Barry Brown – all material arranged and produced by Linval Thompson – including singles, dubs, and unreleased album tracks! There's a really unified feel to the work, despite the space of a few years – given that the Roots Radics handled backings at the Channel One studio, and Scientist mixed all the tracks at King Tubby's – with a nice dub undercurrent that really helps the rhythms float and dip along with Brown's vocals. Titles include "Please Officer (version)", "Ketch A Fire", "Can't Stop Natty Dread", "Free Dreadlocks", "Life Is So Funny", "Love Jah So", "Love Is Pure", and "You Don't Know Who To Trust (version)". 14 tracks on 7 singles – all packaged in a limited box! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Dixie CupsChapel Of Love (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Red Bird/Varese, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The big hit record by The Dixie Cups – and a different sort of record than their New Orleans soul sounding one for ABC! Leiber & Stoller produced, and the LP includes the classic title cut, plus "Iko Iko", "Girls Can Tell", "People Say", "Another Boy Like Mine", and other nice tracks by Barry & Greenwich (a couple with Phil Spector co-credit) like "Gee Baby Gee", "All Grown Up", "Gee The Moon Is Shining Bright" and still hugely popular "Chapel Of Love". Columbia, 2015. New Copy (pic cover)... $10.99
A couple of standout cuts from Dylan's Shadows In The Night, his surprisingly endearing album of songs popularized by Frank Sinatra back in the day – in a cool picture sleeve, too! Includes "The Night We Called It Day" and "Stay With Me", but done in relatively spare settings with Bob's excellent road and studio band, who shine a lot on the strength of the songcraft. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Brian EnoMy Squelchy Life (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Opal, Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
One of rarer efforts in the Brian Eno canon – originally slated for release on Warner Brothers in 1991 – but was ultimately pulled from the release slate and languished officially unreleased all the up to 2014, when it was included as a bonus disc on the All Saints remaster/reissue of '92's Nerve Net! Finally issued here, after all this time in a stand alone 2LP release, and the titles include "I Fall Up", "My Squelchy Life", "Stiff", "Some Words", "Juju Space Jazz", "Rapid Eye", "Everybody's Mother", "Little Apricot", "Over" and more. Rhymesayers, 2004. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
E&A return with a new full length with a few dizzyingly strong cuts – and a slew of others that aren't quite so hot, but still register. DJ Abilities lays down some pretty rocking beats and Eyedea's flow is simply astounding on the best cuts – particularly the single "Now" . One of these days the boys will make a full length as tight as that track. "Reintroducing", "Kept", "Now", "Exausted Love", "Star Destroyer" "Get Along", "Two Men And A Lady", "Act Right", "Glass" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out Monster Disco OrchestaFar Out Monster Disco Orchesta (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $21.99
A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". LP, Vinyl record album

Curtis FullerBlues-Ette (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Savoy, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being a sideman for most of the rest of his career?) The set's cut in that laidback blowing session mode of the Savoy hardbop years – with tremendous work from Benny Golson on tenor, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Al Harewood on drums – all working through easily-handled tunes that include "Minor Vamp", "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Twelve Inch". Think soul jazz with a slight touch of mysticism! LP, Vinyl record album

GodsGenesis (mono) (splatter colored vinyl) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Parlophone, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A tremendous debut from this overlooked late 60s group from the UK – a powerhouse that would later go onto fuel bigger groups like Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Uriah Heep! This initial outing has a surprisingly soulful feel at times – still very rockish in the presentation, but with a style that's still tipping out of the Brit beat group years too – so that even when things are freewheeling and almost progressive, you can still feel some bluesy undercurrents in the vocals and keyboards! John Glascock handles bass, Ken Kensley keyboards – and both sing as well, along with guitarist Joe Konas. Drummer Lee Kerslake completes the group – and titles include "Radio Show", "Farthing Man", "I Never Knew", "Towards The Skies", "Looking Glass", and "Candles Getting Shorter". 2 never before released M+M mixes of a pair of club classics! "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is an excellent single from the godlike hands of Patrick Adams & Greg Carmichael – and a club-heavy update of the Motown classic – done here in the M+M dub mix w/reprise. ✨✧ Linda JonesHypnotized (180 gram pressing – with bonus 7" single) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Loma/Soul Brother (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". Also comes with a bonus 45 – with "I Just Can't Live My Life" and "My Heart Needs A Break"! LP, Vinyl record album

KinksKinksize Session EP (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
BMG/Sanctuary, 1964. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $12.99
Early Kinks in all of their glory – showing a bit more of an R&B influence than in their later years, but still already working with all the wit and imagination that won us over many years ago! The tunes have a surprising roughness, if you're only used to the group from a few years later – but that makes kind of a nice change too – almost a distillation of the early Davies brother ideals at their start – without any overblown concepts to get in the way. This EP was originally British-only – and features the tracks "I've Got That Feeling", "Things Are Getting Better", "I've Gotta Go Now", and "Louie Louie". 7-inch, Vinyl record
