Franco BattiatoSembrava Una Serata Come Tante/Gente (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Universal (Italy), 1969. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $8.99
Rare early single from Italian singer-songwriter Franco Battiato – and in a melodic, sprawling psych pop style – with is something of a surprise given his more out there experimentation on later recordings! Both tracks start out with a fairly intimate sound, but build in atmosphere as they go, with nice string arrangements and passionate vocals. A great couple of tunes! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Big StarComplete Columbia – Live At University Of Missouri 4/25/93 (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP

The early 90s reunion of the legendary, short-lived Big Star – with original Big Star heroes Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens joined by proud stylistic scions Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of The Posies! Honestly, this is a reunion done right – with the principal figures getting a way too long belated warm reception by a rapturous younger fanbase – and this 2016 vinyl version includes the complete concert from The University Of Missouri in April of 1993. Includes "In The Street", "Don't Lie To Me", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "I am The Cosmos", "The Ballad Of El Goodo", "Back Of A Car", "Way Out West", the T Rex covers "Baby Strange" and "Jeepster", "For You", "September Gurls" and more – plus the previously unreleased versions of "Thirteen", "Oh My Soul", covers of "Kansas City" and "Duke Of Earl" and more. Miles Davis mixed with Robert Glasper – in a really wonderful groove! Side 2 of the single features a 15 minute excerpt of "The Ghetto Walk" – pulled from the Complete Silent Way Sessions collection of the 1969 recordings for the album – and on side two, the cut is condensed into three and a half minutes by Glasper, who adds in some great jazzy touches of his own – and also has Bilal singing vocals as well! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Moserobie (Sweden), 2016. New Copy ... $21.99
The title's a bit of a joke, but it's only Jonas Kullhamar's way of letting us know that he's working here with three very new and exciting players on the Swedish scene! The set has Kullhammar blowing both tenor and the Braithophone of George Braith – with a trio that has boundless energy and a really youthful, vibrant feel – so much so that Jonas may be more unbridled here than he has been in years! The group features Johan Graden on piano, Vilhelm Bromander on bass, and Konrad Agnas on drums – and titles include "Britta On The Rocks", "The Defiers", "Britta's Bounce", "Vem Jagar Roland", and "On Top Of Melting Iceberg". KullruskSpring Spring Spring Spring Spring (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2005. New Copy ... $16.99
Amplified saxophone genius from Kullrusk – a tremendous record that draws on a jazz legacy stretching back to Eddie Harris, John Klemmer, and Gil Melle, but one with a bold voice all its own! Reed leaders Jonas Kullhammar and Per Rusktrask Johansson play amplified alto, tenor, and clarinets on the record – blowing with that electrified feel that first crept onto Varitone sax albums of the late 60s – in a way that's sometimes soulful, sometimes experimental – really taking off from the use of the instrument on older Cadet and Atlantic albums! The rest of the quartet includes electric bass and drums from Sven Lindvall and Martin Jonsson, respectively – playing in a mode that's often got a nice funky undercurrent – really grooving the tunes wonderfully underneath the electric reeds. Titles include "Hellstone", "Children's Song", "He Ma'm", "Faidros", "Merguez", "Herkules", and "Indo". LP, Vinyl record album

All the "extra time" tracks from the Scientist Wins The World Cup album – brought together here in a wonderfully dubby setting! The album's a classic – as Scientist makes magic with the Roots Radics band – which features some especially great saxophone work from Deadly Headly! Trombone is great, too – played by Nambo – and the record also features a bit of echoey vocals from Hugh Jarrett, Wayne Jarrett, and Johnny Osborne. Titles include "Extra Time", in versions one through five – plus "Golden Goal". LP, Vinyl record album
(Very cool limited vinyl pressing – in a sleeve that has the artwork for the original album on the inside!)

✨✧ Sven LibaekTo Ride A White Horse (180 gram pressing) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Festival/Votary (Australia), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 31.99
One of our favorite records ever from the great Sven Libaek – an artist who's possibly best known for his underwater soundtrack work of the 70s, but who shines equally well here on a late 60s album that has him hitting the top of the waves! The music was written for a surf film in 1968, but has a vibe that's much richer than that – some vibes-heavy tracks that showcase Sven's background in jazz, and which tie nicely to some of the Bruce Brown jazz/surf soundtracks of the early 60s LA scene – mixed with other numbers that have more of an Aussie vibe, in that light wrapping of rhythmic currents and lyrical instrumentation! The vibes alone are worth the price of admission – and titles include "Bikini Girls", "The Lost City", "In The Wave", "To Ride A White Horse", "Turistas Turistas", "Bush Fire", "Break Of Dawn", and "Fun & Games". James MasonRecollection Echo – Unreleased Recordings (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rush Hour (Netherlands), Late 70s. New Copy ... $21.99
A stunner of an album from the legendary James Mason – unreleased tracks that were recorded after his legendary Rhythm Of Life album – finally issued to the world after so many years! There's a number of cuts here that would have been right at home on Mason's classic (and only) album – and share that sense of soul and spirituality that's not only completely unique, but which has gone onto make James' music a touchstone for so many other artists over the decades – a star to reach for, even if most people can't ever make it. A few other cuts have a slightly more modern vibe – a few more keyboards, with slight 80s elements – yet very much in the spirit of Mason's later "Nightgruv" single, with a moody, cosmic sort of quality. A number of cuts have the great Clarice Taylor singing lead vocals – and one even has Fonda Rae in the background – and the cuts also feature loads of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards from James. Titles include "Space Waking", "The Dance Of Life", "The Love Song", "Angel Eyes", "I've Got Your Love", "Cool Out", and "Up Jump". LP, Vinyl record album

Sammy with Freedom UnitySalute To Soul ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99
Sammy sings soul – not Sammy Davis Jr, but this ultra-hip Japanese singer from the early 70s – a female vocalist who works here with great backings from the Freedom Unity ensemble! The tunes are all numbers from American and British sources of the 50s and 60s – tunes you'd know from versions on labels like Stax or Atlantic, but redone here with some really groovy new inflections – including cool arrangements from Freedom Unity, with a nice blend of strings and soulful jazz elements – including some especially great keyboards and reeds on some numbers! Sammy sings in English, but with this unusual accent that really transforms the tunes – and titles include versions of "Hey Jude", "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Summertime", "What Am I Living For", "House Of The Rising Sun", and "Nobody's Fault But Mine". Sammy with Jiro Inagaki & Soul MediaWoman Robinson Crusoe – Rock Steady ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
Funky grooves from Jiro Inagaki and his Soul Media combo – and some cool vocals from 70s Japanese singer Sammy – a pretty enigmatic talent who really makes her mark with this record! The album's less island-styled than you might guess from the title or cover – and instead, it mixes these spacious vocal passages with more forceful backings from Soul Media – a groove that's got the same blend of female lead and funkier elements that you might find in a Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin project – although the lyrics here are mostly in Japanese! The set features a killer version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady", with really wild vocals and drums – plus the cuts "Memories Of That Guy", "So High", "Wanderer's Lullaby", "The In & Outer Stomp & Shouter", "Nobody Loves Me", and "My Sweet Dolls". Sammy & Count BuffaloSoul & Soul ... LP
Express (Japan), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99
Plenty of soul here – and a fair bit of funk, too! A set that features great vocals from English language singer Sammy – and backings by the hip combo of Count Buffalo! The group are great on their own albums, but the really stretch out here – backing Sammy with grooves that are clearly inspired by the James Brown Band of the late 60s – with ultra-tight horns, great keyboards, and vamping rhythms that are perfect for Sammy's raspy vocals! Way more soulful than you might expect – even for the best of the funky Japanese jazz albums of the time – with titles that include "I Gotcha", "Hot Pants", "You Made Me So Very Happy", "Cozmic Blues", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Save The Country". LP, Vinyl record album
