✨✧ VariousLos Alamos Grind! (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Numero, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Numero Records parodies both the Las Vegas Grind series of compilations, and the 50s sci-fi artwork of EC Comics – and turns out a surprisingly great set of tracks in the process! The material here is from the more garagey side of the Numero spectrum – tracks that are heavy on twang and guitars – sometimes instrumental, sometimes with raw early rock vocals – all laid out in a rock-solid collection that maybe beats some of the more long-running compilation series of this nature. In keeping with those, Numero has been completely restrained on including any real information on the tracks – just a groovy little comic insert that follows in the style of the cover – alongside titles that include "Classie's Whip" by Classie Ballou, "The Grasshopper Twist" by The Blazers, "Jump Back" by Eugene Blacknell, "Rock & Roll Guitar" by Johnny Knight, "The Boogie Twist (part 1)" by Cal Valentine, "Slap Stick" by Dino & The Deltones, "Bui Bui" by L Hollis & The Mackadoos, "Hot Links" by Soul Heirs, and "Aw Shucks" by JJ Jones. Andre 3000All Together Now (voc, inst) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Legacy, 2010/2017. New Copy (pic cover)... $3.99 7.99
Andre 3000 takes on the Beatles-classic, giving it a great pop funk feel that would've fit right in on his The Love Below side of that OutKast classic! Originally issued as promo single, it's pretty stunning that didn't get a proper release this 7-inch – which also includes a never before released instrumental version – which is suprisingly great itself sans Andre's charsimatic vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Fantastic fold-out cover design too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition vinyl only pressing – in a fold-out poster cover!)

Luis BacalovLa Seduzione (180 gram vinyl) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Sonor (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $28.99
A very cool record from Luis Bacalov – and one with a sound that's quite different than some of his more familiar, more sentimental soundtrack material! This one's got a wild mix of modes – from moody, atmospheric tracks, to funky bits, to more tripped-out passages – all with instrumentation that feels much more like it's from the Piccioni or Umiliani camp than the usual Bacalov styles! The whole thing's one of the more obscure numbers in Luis' soundtrack catalog – but it may well also be one of the best, thanks to titles that include "Hello Quincey", "Tucumania", "Nago", "Pinha Tamburim", "Lisa G", "Members Only", and "Anagramma". Don BlackmanDon Blackman (180 gram vinyl) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Titles include "You Ain't Hip", "Yabba Dabba Do", "Heart's Desire", "Deaf Hook Up Connection", "Never Miss A Thing", and "Holding You Loving You", and "Since You Been Away So Long". BreakwaterWork It Out – The Very Best Of Breakwater (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Arista/Expansion (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
All the best tracks from Breakwater – brought together in this one fantastic collection! The set pulls the best numbers from the group's only two albums – tracks that effortlessly blend soul, funk, and a bit of jazz – all with a style that's more sophisticated than mainstream funk and soul acts of the time, but every bit as groovy! The whole set is great – non-stop magic all the way through – and titles include "Work It Out", "No Limit", "You Know I Love You", "That's Not What We Came Here For", "Feel Your Way", "Do It Till The Fluid Gets How", "Love Of My Life", "Say You Love Me Girl", "Time", and "The One In My Dreams". Stelvio CiprianiUn'Ombra Nell'Ombra (Ring Of Darkness) (180 gram vinyl) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
Erotic demonic genius from Stelvio Cipriani – a slinky little soundtrack that's even more electric than some of his other 70s work! The vibe here is still very much in the best Ciprani mode of the time – often slightly funky, with undercurrents of groove that run through the tracks via electric basslines that step, dip, and turn nicely. But even better are the keyboards on the set, played mostly by Claudio Simonetti – sometimes in a spare and spooky way, but at others in a bolder style that recalls the best Italian scores by Goblin from the same stretch. There's less of the Goblin rock quality here, and more of the Ciprani sense of space – and the combination of modes makes the score an especially memorable one – served up in the usual Digitmovies high standards! Dave Douglas & High RiskDark Territory (with download ) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Greenleaf, 2016. New Copy ... $24.99
Great work from Dave Douglas and his High Risk quartet – a group who definitely step into dark territory here, in a heady blend of electric elements and Dave's bold frontline work on trumpet! The group electric bass, electric drums, and more electronics – plus some acoustic drums – yet somehow manage to come across with a very organic vibe, and one that's quite different than you might expect – especially in comparison to other trumpet-led projects like this, which often have the leader processed and filtered into the mix. Instead, Dave's sound is as rich and warm as ever – never a slave to the backings, and instead right out front ahead of them – blowing with lines that arc and turn beautifully, and remind us what a personal, poetic soloist Douglas can be. Titles include "Celine", "Ridge Hill", "Mission Acropolis", "All The Pretty Horsepower", and "Loom Large". LP, Vinyl record album

Easy BeatsVigil (mono pressing) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
EMI/Varese, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The Easybeats are maybe looking a bit trippier than usual on the cover – no surprise, as the album's from a time when they were moving past simple jaunty pop and into some slightly headier territory! Songs are still short, and catchy in all the right places – but it's also clear that these guys are drinking a bit deeper of the British scene of the time, even from their long distance in Australia. Yet the set also has a bit of Brit help, too – including vocals from Steve Marriott on one track, and piano from Nicky Hopkins on a few tracks – in a set of titles that includes "Good Times", "See Saw", "Land Of Make Believe", "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", "Come In You'll Get Pneumonia", "Hello How Are You", and "The Music Goes Round My Head". Lubos FiserValerie & Her Week Of Wonders EP (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Finders Keepers (UK), 1970. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99
A dark little soundtrack that we'd pitch right up there with The Wicker Man or Rosemary's Baby – and one with a sound that's somewhere in between those two classics! The work was penned for an obscure early 70s film in the Czech new wave – and features music that's sometimes a bit folksy, sometimes a bit spiritualist – served up in a blend of light orchestrations, occasional choral passages, and eerie isolated instruments that include flute, harpsichord, organ, and bells! There's a darkly brooding quality that really reminds us of Komeda's last great moments for Polanski – but the overall sound is a bit freer, and more illustrative as well – little snippets of poetry in sound, created with a feel that's as evocative as the images they were designed to accompany. This Record StoreDay releases features seven previously unreleased variations, vocal tracks, and newly resurrected themes from the original master tapes. 7-inch, Vinyl record

GoblinNotturno (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1982. New Copy ... $29.99
A nice set of crime/cop themes by the great Goblin – scored for this obscure thriller from 1982! Some of the music's a lot more funky than some of Goblin's other scores, with loads of nice keyboards, basslines, and some funky drums – and despite the date of the film, the music feels more like it was lifted from some mid 70s cop show on TV, than some of the stiffer, colder styles that were coming into play on other 80s soundtracks. There's also still a few moody atmospheric pieces that are like the group's other work, but the overall mix is pretty nice – and there's a total of 14 tracks that includes "Nocturne", "Bass Theme", "Landing Strip", "Est", and "Helycopter". TelevisionLive At The Old Waldorf ... LP
Elektra/Record Store Day, 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $33.99 35.98
The rare, long unreleased Television live album! Recorded at San Francisco's Old Waldorf in the summer of 1978, on the one-and-only US tour the band ever did as a headliner in their original 70s run, it's a revelatory and all too rare treasure. Television's well-known legacy as a mainstay in the NYC club scene of the punk era precedes just about any discussion of their work, but relatively few people ever had the opportunity to hear that early live side of the band, especially given the iconic status of their immaculately recorded Marquee Moon and underrated Adventure LPs. So it's no wonder Live At The Old Waldorf has sold out immediately the couple of times it's ever been issued! Rawer and a little buzzier, heftier and more angular then the studio recordings, but very much the same band. Amazing stuff! Includes "The Dream's Dream", "Venus", "Foxhole", "Careful", "Ain't That Nothin'", "Friction", "Marquee Moon" and cool cover of The Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sammy with Jiro Inagaki & Soul MediaWoman Robinson Crusoe – Rock Steady ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Funky grooves from Jiro Inagaki and his Soul Media combo – and some cool vocals from 70s Japanese singer Sammy – a pretty enigmatic talent who really makes her mark with this record! The album's less island-styled than you might guess from the title or cover – and instead, it mixes these spacious vocal passages with more forceful backings from Soul Media – a groove that's got the same blend of female lead and funkier elements that you might find in a Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin project – although the lyrics here are mostly in Japanese! The set features a killer version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady", with really wild vocals and drums – plus the cuts "Memories Of That Guy", "So High", "Wanderer's Lullaby", "The In & Outer Stomp & Shouter", "Nobody Loves Me", and "My Sweet Dolls". Plenty of soul here – and a fair bit of funk, too! A set that features great vocals from English language singer Sammy – and backings by the hip combo of Count Buffalo! The group are great on their own albums, but the really stretch out here – backing Sammy with grooves that are clearly inspired by the James Brown Band of the late 60s – with ultra-tight horns, great keyboards, and vamping rhythms that are perfect for Sammy's raspy vocals! Way more soulful than you might expect – even for the best of the funky Japanese jazz albums of the time – with titles that include "I Gotcha", "Hot Pants", "You Made Me So Very Happy", "Cozmic Blues", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Save The Country". Gary Calamar & Phil GalloRecord Store Days – From Vinyl To Digital & Back Again (paperback) ... Book
Sterling, 2010. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Somebody's finally gone out and written a book about one subject we can really get behind – the Record Store – and not only that, they've done a beautiful job with the entire package too! The book takes a look at the importance of the record store – not just historically, but culturally as well – with an especially important focus on the need for stores in the digital age, as a way of keeping both the music, and interest in the music, alive and well for generations to come! As you might guess from the subtitle, authors Calamar and Gallo have a bit of an agenda in their portrait – but they really pave the way with some great recollections of record stores past, incredible bits not just from folks who owned and worked in stores, but also from famous shoppers, artists, and collectors too. And even cooler, the book is filled with lots of great photographs – wonderful images of old stores in color and black and white, plus lots of great sidebar bits that help draw a focus on key issues in record retail. If you, like us, get a bit of a rush every time you walk into a record store, then you'll be sure to get an equal rush from this book – a wonderful tome that's one we can send home to our parents, and finally show them we've got a career worth a bit of respect! 238 pages, hardcover, and really beautifully done.
