ArenaArena (180 gram pressing) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Crystal Clear/Roundtable (Australia), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 31.99
A heady set of jazz from the Australian scene of the 70s – a bit funky jazz, a bit harder jamming – and a record that's got a lot more edge than its contemporaries from the European scene! Ted White plays tremendous flute and alto sax here – the latter with a sharply spiritual energy that's quite unexpected, and which gives the record a lot more soul than the usual prog-influenced fusion date of the time – a quality that's even quite different than some of the other Australian jazz material of the 70s – which, when electrified, didn't always hold onto the sharpness of its acoustic properties. Keyboards are from Peter Jones, who's nicely restrained, but makes some great contributions – and the rest of the group features Charlie Gould on guitar, Bob Arrowsmith on bass, and Graham Morgan on percussion and drums. Titles include "Turkish Defunked", "Keith's Mood", "Scrichell Cat", "Journey In Three's", "Scope", "Duke", and "The Long One". LP, Vinyl record album

Franco BattiatoSembrava Una Serata Come Tante/Gente (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Universal (Italy), 1969. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $15.99
Rare early single from Italian singer-songwriter Franco Battiato – and in a melodic, sprawling psych pop style – with is something of a surprise given his more out there experimentation on later recordings! Both tracks start out with a fairly intimate sound, but build in atmosphere as they go, with nice string arrangements and passionate vocals. A great couple of tunes! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Bee Gees/Faith No MoreI Started A Joke (colored vinyl) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Rhino, 1968/1995. New Copy ... $7.99
The Bee Gees original "I Started A Joke" is a 60s pop masterpiece – the kind of little symphony that the group did so well at the start! Faith No More definitely take a few liberties with the tune on their version from 1995 – but in a way that makes for a nicely playful package! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Big StarComplete Columbia – Live At University Of Missouri 4/25/93 (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Legacy/Volcano, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
The early 90s reunion of the legendary, short-lived Big Star – with original Big Star heroes Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens joined by proud stylistic scions Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of The Posies! Honestly, this is a reunion done right – with the principal figures getting a way too long belated warm reception by a rapturous younger fanbase – and this 2016 vinyl version includes the complete concert from The University Of Missouri in April of 1993. Includes "In The Street", "Don't Lie To Me", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "I am The Cosmos", "The Ballad Of El Goodo", "Back Of A Car", "Way Out West", the T Rex covers "Baby Strange" and "Jeepster", "For You", "September Gurls" and more – plus the previously unreleased versions of "Thirteen", "Oh My Soul", covers of "Kansas City" and "Duke Of Earl" and more. Johnny Cash & OthersBest Of The Johnny Cash TV Show 1969 to 1971 (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
A great set of classic live performances from The Johnny Cash Show from 1969 to 1971 – not only featuring some charming live cuts by The Man In Black himself – but playing a graceful host to a diverse lineup of guests including fellow period country stars George Jones, Tammy Wynette and the not-quite-yet outlaw hero Waylon Jennings, but the great and nowadays comparably overlooked Bobby Bare, rockers Derek & The Dominos, singer-songwriter heavies Joni Mitchell and James Taylor and more. Includes "Flesh & Blood" by Johnny Cash, a 3 hit medley by George Jones, "Detroit City" by Bobby Bare, "Fire And Rain" by JT, "Loving Her Was Easier" by Kris Kristofferson, "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" by Waylon, "Daddy Sang Bass" by Johnny Cash w/ The Carter Family & The Statler Brothers and more. John ColtraneRoulette Sides (180 gram 10 inch LP) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Roulette/Rhino, 1960. New Copy ... $14.99
Some of our favorite material by John Coltrane – a handful of sides recorded for Roulette Records at the start of the 60s – only issued as part of a split LP that was shared with Lee Morgan! This limited 10" LP pressing features the album's side of Coltrane's work – which features him playing with an unusual quartet that includes McCoy Tyner, plus bassist Steven Davis and drummer Billy Higgins. Higgins' gives Coltrane a modal groove that's incredible, and Trane hits these riffs that are almost Nathan Davis-ish on tracks like "Exotica", presented in 2 versions, plus "Like Sonny" and "One & Four". Legacy/Columbia, 2016. New Copy (pic cover)... $12.99
Miles Davis mixed with Robert Glasper – in a really wonderful groove! Side 2 of the single features a 15 minute excerpt of "The Ghetto Walk" – pulled from the Complete Silent Way Sessions collection of the 1969 recordings for the album – and on side two, the cut is condensed into three and a half minutes by Glasper, who adds in some great jazzy touches of his own – and also has Bilal singing vocals as well! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Dee EdwardsI Can Deal With That (voc, strings) (2016 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Soul Brother (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $8.99
One of the coolest cuts we've ever heard from Dee Edwards – a sweet mellow stepper that has a jazzy guitar lick tripping around the bottom, while Dee sings it strong on the top, but in a nicely understated way! The flipside adds in a bit of strings, but never in a way that dampens the groove at all – more like some nice bit of sweetening in the sound! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hauntingly beautiful sound library material from a pair of great composers – the versatile, rare sound library scene favorite Armando Sciascia – and lesser known, but brilliant Fabio Fabor – on an excellent selection of material recorded in the early 70s! The sounds range from soaring choral and string arrangements, to chilling bits of piano and other keyboard atmosphere, on titles that include "Foule", "Sea Spirit", "Asymetric" "Postdoctoral", "Infini", "Fingerpull", "Gliss-Cantata", "Bulldozer", "Horizons", "Contorsions", "Incubus", "Algorithmique", "Vulcan's Dream" and "Marmoreo". ✨✧ Far Out Monster Disco OrchestaFar Out Monster Disco Orchesta (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $21.99
A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". Savoy, Early 50s. New Copy ... $19.99
A nice little collection of some of Dizzy Gillespie's best bop material for Savoy – tunes that were originally recorded as 78rpm singles – then issued together on this classic album of all-star players! The tunes are short, catchy, and often very grooving – that mix of whimsy and modernism that made Dizzy stand out from the start – handled by a few different groups of players, with musicians who include Milt Jackson on vibes, John Coltrane on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Percy Heath on bass. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Star Dust", "The Bluest Blues", "The Champ", "Birk's Works", "Caravan", "Time On My Hands", and "Ooh Shoo Be Doo Bee". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/High Moon, 1969. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $9.99
Killer single from Lotti Golden – cut around the time of her classic in our eyes, though popularly underappreciated Motor-Cycle LP for Atlantic! The A-Side is a rockin' soul medley of "Sock It To Me Baby" and "It's Your Thing", a really fun number with boisterous Bob Crewe production. The flip "Annabelle With Bells (Home Made Girl)" is less wild, but similarly soul-steeped. Great stuff! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Sammy with Freedom UnitySalute To Soul ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $42.99
Sammy sings soul – not Sammy Davis Jr, but this ultra-hip Japanese singer from the early 70s – a female vocalist who works here with great backings from the Freedom Unity ensemble! The tunes are all numbers from American and British sources of the 50s and 60s – tunes you'd know from versions on labels like Stax or Atlantic, but redone here with some really groovy new inflections – including cool arrangements from Freedom Unity, with a nice blend of strings and soulful jazz elements – including some especially great keyboards and reeds on some numbers! Sammy sings in English, but with this unusual accent that really transforms the tunes – and titles include versions of "Hey Jude", "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Summertime", "What Am I Living For", "House Of The Rising Sun", and "Nobody's Fault But Mine". Sammy with Jiro Inagaki & Soul MediaWoman Robinson Crusoe – Rock Steady ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $42.99
Funky grooves from Jiro Inagaki and his Soul Media combo – and some cool vocals from 70s Japanese singer Sammy – a pretty enigmatic talent who really makes her mark with this record! The album's less island-styled than you might guess from the title or cover – and instead, it mixes these spacious vocal passages with more forceful backings from Soul Media – a groove that's got the same blend of female lead and funkier elements that you might find in a Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin project – although the lyrics here are mostly in Japanese! The set features a killer version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady", with really wild vocals and drums – plus the cuts "Memories Of That Guy", "So High", "Wanderer's Lullaby", "The In & Outer Stomp & Shouter", "Nobody Loves Me", and "My Sweet Dolls". Sammy & Count BuffaloSoul & Soul ... LP
Express (Japan), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $42.99
Plenty of soul here – and a fair bit of funk, too! A set that features great vocals from English language singer Sammy – and backings by the hip combo of Count Buffalo! The group are great on their own albums, but the really stretch out here – backing Sammy with grooves that are clearly inspired by the James Brown Band of the late 60s – with ultra-tight horns, great keyboards, and vamping rhythms that are perfect for Sammy's raspy vocals! Way more soulful than you might expect – even for the best of the funky Japanese jazz albums of the time – with titles that include "I Gotcha", "Hot Pants", "You Made Me So Very Happy", "Cozmic Blues", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Save The Country". Boddie/Numero, 1960s/1970s. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Numero does it again – unleashing an amazing batch of work for the first time ever – all packaged in a very limited Record Store Day set! The collection features material that was pressed up at the tiny Boddie pressing plant in Cleveland – a wonderful range of local artists from the late 60s through the mid 80s – all served up with the usual Numero flair! The set's a rich discovery of sounds we'd never have heard otherwise – and although it's slanted heavily towards rare funk and soul, there's also some compelling indie rock sides too – especially some homegrown, dark-toned sounds from the 80s – clearly influenced by the styles in the UK underground. The set features 17 tracks in all – including "Don't Stop Smiling" by Jus Us, "Just A Dream" by Imperial Wonders, "Love Is On The Way" by Bill Spoon, "Let Me Go" by The Harmonics, "I'm Gonna Treat You Good" by The Donations, "Good For The Gander" by Hot Chocolate, "Woman You're Gonna Pay For This" by Wicked Lester, "The Voyage Of The Nautilus" by Russell Potter, and "Snakepit" by Berlin West.
