AmanazAfrica (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". Blue Mountain EagleBlue Mountain Eagle (180 gram pressing) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cotillion/Atantic, 1970. New Copy ... $24.99
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". LP, Vinyl record album

Barry BrownThompson Sound (7 x 7 inch single box set) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Hot Milk (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 7 x 7 inch ... $58.99
Rare work from Barry Brown – all material arranged and produced by Linval Thompson – including singles, dubs, and unreleased album tracks! There's a really unified feel to the work, despite the space of a few years – given that the Roots Radics handled backings at the Channel One studio, and Scientist mixed all the tracks at King Tubby's – with a nice dub undercurrent that really helps the rhythms float and dip along with Brown's vocals. Titles include "Please Officer (version)", "Ketch A Fire", "Can't Stop Natty Dread", "Free Dreadlocks", "Life Is So Funny", "Love Jah So", "Love Is Pure", and "You Don't Know Who To Trust (version)". 14 tracks on 7 singles – all packaged in a limited box! 7-inch, Vinyl record

E&A return with a new full length with a few dizzyingly strong cuts – and a slew of others that aren't quite so hot, but still register. DJ Abilities lays down some pretty rocking beats and Eyedea's flow is simply astounding on the best cuts – particularly the single "Now" . One of these days the boys will make a full length as tight as that track. "Reintroducing", "Kept", "Now", "Exausted Love", "Star Destroyer" "Get Along", "Two Men And A Lady", "Act Right", "Glass" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out Monster Disco OrchestaFar Out Monster Disco Orchesta (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $14.99
A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". Curtis FullerBlues-Ette (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Savoy, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being a sideman for most of the rest of his career?) The set's cut in that laidback blowing session mode of the Savoy hardbop years – with tremendous work from Benny Golson on tenor, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Al Harewood on drums – all working through easily-handled tunes that include "Minor Vamp", "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Twelve Inch". Think soul jazz with a slight touch of mysticism! LP, Vinyl record album

Jef GilsonJef Gilson Et Malagasy (4CD set) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99
An amazing blend of jazz and global elements – and some of the most exciting material ever from French jazzman Jef Gilson! Gilson was a modernist right from the start – an artist whose piano work of the 60s was on a par with Martial Solal, and who was already beginning to branch out by the end of the decade into a range of unusual projects! The material here has Jef really coming into his own – exploring the sounds and styles of Madagascar with his Malagasy group – one of the most important cross-cultural acts on the European scene of the 70s – with a power and presence that's only being fully appreciated today. This beautiful set brings together four rare albums by Gilson and the group – originally issued on his own Palm Records label, and lovingly repackaged by Jazzman with full notes on the music in both French and English. The style is quite unique – sometimes electrified a bit on tracks that feature guitar and Gilson on Fender Rhodes – sometimes more acoustic and organic when the percussion takes over a bit – and always with these wonderful reed passages that reach out with lots of spiritual energy, and tones that rival the best of the post-Coltrane generation in the US. Different albums include Malagasy/Gilson, Madagascar Now, Malagasy At Newport-Paris, and Les Touches Noires – the last of which features a number of unissued or rare tracks by the group. Really wonderful stuff – and work we'd put up there with the best MPS Jazz Meets World recordings, or 70s treasures by Mulatu, or some of Lloyd Miller's best! CD

GodsGenesis (mono) (splatter colored vinyl) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Parlophone, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A tremendous debut from this overlooked late 60s group from the UK – a powerhouse that would later go onto fuel bigger groups like Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Uriah Heep! This initial outing has a surprisingly soulful feel at times – still very rockish in the presentation, but with a style that's still tipping out of the Brit beat group years too – so that even when things are freewheeling and almost progressive, you can still feel some bluesy undercurrents in the vocals and keyboards! John Glascock handles bass, Ken Kensley keyboards – and both sing as well, along with guitarist Joe Konas. Drummer Lee Kerslake completes the group – and titles include "Radio Show", "Farthing Man", "I Never Knew", "Towards The Skies", "Looking Glass", and "Candles Getting Shorter". Linda JonesHypnotized (180 gram pressing – with bonus 7" single) (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Loma/Soul Brother (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the greatest female singers on the east coast scene at the end of the 60s – heard here on a classic Warner Brothers set that includes some of her best-remembered tracks! At some level, the set's a prequel to Linda's later recordings for the Stang/All Platinum label – as it features production and arrangements by the great George Kerr – who really has a way with slow-moving soul tunes, and the kind of sad-tinged tracks that Jones always did so well! Plus, his raw production really brings out some of the deeper soul qualities in Linda's voice – a mode that's quite a surprise at times, and presented here in a way that's far beyond any of the Aretha Franklin-styled cliches of other singers. Jones is a tremendously unique talent in female soul, and this album's her lasting legacy – a true treasure with cuts that include the hit "Hypnotized", plus loads of other nice ones like "Last Minute Miracle", "Give My Love A Try", "You Can't Take It", "What've I Done", and "I Can't Stand It". Also comes with a bonus 45 – with "I Just Can't Live My Life" and "My Heart Needs A Break"! LP, Vinyl record album

KinksKinksize Session EP (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
BMG/Sanctuary, 1964. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $12.99
Early Kinks in all of their glory – showing a bit more of an R&B influence than in their later years, but still already working with all the wit and imagination that won us over many years ago! The tunes have a surprising roughness, if you're only used to the group from a few years later – but that makes kind of a nice change too – almost a distillation of the early Davies brother ideals at their start – without any overblown concepts to get in the way. This EP was originally British-only – and features the tracks "I've Got That Feeling", "Things Are Getting Better", "I've Gotta Go Now", and "Louie Louie". 7-inch, Vinyl record

KullruskSpring Spring Spring Spring Spring (2015 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2005. New Copy ... $26.99
Amplified saxophone genius from Kullrusk – a tremendous record that draws on a jazz legacy stretching back to Eddie Harris, John Klemmer, and Gil Melle, but one with a bold voice all its own! Reed leaders Jonas Kullhammar and Per Rusktrask Johansson play amplified alto, tenor, and clarinets on the record – blowing with that electrified feel that first crept onto Varitone sax albums of the late 60s – in a way that's sometimes soulful, sometimes experimental – really taking off from the use of the instrument on older Cadet and Atlantic albums! The rest of the quartet includes electric bass and drums from Sven Lindvall and Martin Jonsson, respectively – playing in a mode that's often got a nice funky undercurrent – really grooving the tunes wonderfully underneath the electric reeds. Titles include "Hellstone", "Children's Song", "He Ma'm", "Faidros", "Merguez", "Herkules", and "Indo". LP, Vinyl record album
