Don BlackmanDon Blackman (180 gram vinyl) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Titles include "You Ain't Hip", "Yabba Dabba Do", "Heart's Desire", "Deaf Hook Up Connection", "Never Miss A Thing", and "Holding You Loving You", and "Since You Been Away So Long". Brother AliUndisputed Truth (3LP 10th Anniversary edition – with download) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2007. New Copy 3LP ... $32.99
Minnesota's own Rhymesayers camp continue their tradition of heartfelt Mid-West boombap. This time around Ali draws inspiration from within, sharing his innermost feelings and personal struggles without coming off preachy or like aughties emo rap, while at the same time celebrating the elements that nurtured him up to the present, dropping sly references throughout. Ali's flow is strong and melodic, maintaining a delicate balance between battle braggadocio and introspection. Longtime affiliate Ant's sample-driven production bounces things along at a nice pace, varying in mood without disregarding coherency. Lyric sheets are included for further digestion. Songs include the banging opener "Whatcha Got", "Truth Is", "Pedigree", "Letter From The Government", "Here", "Listen Up" featuring Prince Whipper Whip (!), "Uncle Sam Goddamn", and "Ear To Ear". 3LP deluxe 10th Anniversary edition! ✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiUn'Ombra Nell'Ombra (Ring Of Darkness) (180 gram vinyl) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Erotic demonic genius from Stelvio Cipriani – a slinky little soundtrack that's even more electric than some of his other 70s work! The vibe here is still very much in the best Ciprani mode of the time – often slightly funky, with undercurrents of groove that run through the tracks via electric basslines that step, dip, and turn nicely. But even better are the keyboards on the set, played mostly by Claudio Simonetti – sometimes in a spare and spooky way, but at others in a bolder style that recalls the best Italian scores by Goblin from the same stretch. There's less of the Goblin rock quality here, and more of the Ciprani sense of space – and the combination of modes makes the score an especially memorable one – served up in the usual Digitmovies high standards! Jerry Cole/101 StringsAstro Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000 (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Alshire/Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $13.99 14.99
An absolute treasure of tripped-out, space age symphonic funk from 101 Strings! On this set the undocumented group of session players run through a whole bunch of spacey cuts, complete with fuzzed out electric guitar and sitar, weird period electronics, and more than a few funky drum breaks. It's the kind of record that could only be born of the late 60s scene – filled with huge, stratospheric string charts that soar with pure classical chops, as filtered through the groovy, anything-goes era of late 60s space age grooves. The tracks are as groovy as the titles, which include "Re-Entry to Mog", "Bad Trip Back to '69", "Trippin On Lunar O7", Where Were You In 1982?" and "A Disappointing Love With A Desensitized Robot". Lubos FiserValerie & Her Week Of Wonders EP (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Finders Keepers (UK), 1970. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99
A dark little soundtrack that we'd pitch right up there with The Wicker Man or Rosemary's Baby – and one with a sound that's somewhere in between those two classics! The work was penned for an obscure early 70s film in the Czech new wave – and features music that's sometimes a bit folksy, sometimes a bit spiritualist – served up in a blend of light orchestrations, occasional choral passages, and eerie isolated instruments that include flute, harpsichord, organ, and bells! There's a darkly brooding quality that really reminds us of Komeda's last great moments for Polanski – but the overall sound is a bit freer, and more illustrative as well – little snippets of poetry in sound, created with a feel that's as evocative as the images they were designed to accompany. This Record StoreDay releases features seven previously unreleased variations, vocal tracks, and newly resurrected themes from the original master tapes. 7-inch, Vinyl record

GoblinNotturno (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1982. New Copy ... $29.99
A nice set of crime/cop themes by the great Goblin – scored for this obscure thriller from 1982! Some of the music's a lot more funky than some of Goblin's other scores, with loads of nice keyboards, basslines, and some funky drums – and despite the date of the film, the music feels more like it was lifted from some mid 70s cop show on TV, than some of the stiffer, colder styles that were coming into play on other 80s soundtracks. There's also still a few moody atmospheric pieces that are like the group's other work, but the overall mix is pretty nice – and there's a total of 14 tracks that includes "Nocturne", "Bass Theme", "Landing Strip", "Est", and "Helycopter". Ennio MorriconeBarbablu (aka Bluebeard) (with bonus tracks) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rustblade (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A great Ennio Morricone soundtrack – also known to the world under the title of "Blue Beard". Richard Burton stars in this nutty film that features a host of lovely ladies – including Raquel Welch and Joey Heatherton – and Morricone's score is a lot moodier and darker than you'd expect for a femme-heavy film like this! The main theme is pretty and nice, with kind of a "plink plonk" approach, similar to that used in Morricone's western work. The other tracks shift the theme into darker versions – but occasionally open out into lighter orchestral passages. Titles include "Dedicato All Quarta", "Barbablu", "Preludio All Prima Moglie", "1928", and "Brutta Fanfara". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastically jazzy score from Roberto Nicolosi – a set that's got all the dark, swirling sounds you'd love from a early 70s Italian horror soundtrack – but served up with instrumentation from some of the best of Rome's jazz scene! Players include Gianni Basso on tenor, Cicci Santucci on trumpet, Dino Piana on trombone, Franco D'Andrea on piano, and Antonello Vannucchi on organ – all musicians who really bring an extra flair to the set, and do way more than just follow simple charts in the studio! Most tracks are short, but burst out with jazzy creativity – and titles include "Canzona", "Risultanze", "Alchimia", "Rose Di Mondo", "Pallore", "Il Declino", "Sospiro", "Cercando Te", "Concentrazione", and "Lampada Accesa". An amazing little soundtrack that's every bit as groovy as its cover – a great blend of 60s mod and Italian jazz, all in support of the skeleton-costumed master thief Kriminal! This set represents the first full length presentation of the film's soundtrack – a long-overdue masterpiece that steps off the jazzier modes used in Italian films of the early 60s, touched by some of the more dynamic production and arrangement styles that were creeping in later in the decade – all served up over short, sweet tracks that dance with delight and drama throughout! There's even a bit of the British and American spy modes of the time creeping into the mix – no doubt a way of highlighting the "international crime" reputation of lead character Kriminal. 29 tracks! ✨✧ TelevisionLive At The Old Waldorf ... LP
Elektra/Record Store Day, 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The rare, long unreleased Television live album! Recorded at San Francisco's Old Waldorf in the summer of 1978, on the one-and-only US tour the band ever did as a headliner in their original 70s run, it's a revelatory and all too rare treasure. Television's well-known legacy as a mainstay in the NYC club scene of the punk era precedes just about any discussion of their work, but relatively few people ever had the opportunity to hear that early live side of the band, especially given the iconic status of their immaculately recorded Marquee Moon and underrated Adventure LPs. So it's no wonder Live At The Old Waldorf has sold out immediately the couple of times it's ever been issued! Rawer and a little buzzier, heftier and more angular then the studio recordings, but very much the same band. Amazing stuff! Includes "The Dream's Dream", "Venus", "Foxhole", "Careful", "Ain't That Nothin'", "Friction", "Marquee Moon" and cool cover of The Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". LP, Vinyl record album

Kyoto Jazz SextetUnity (Japan Record Day release) ... LP
Blue Note (Japan), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $62.99
The Kyoto Jazz sound just keeps on getting better and better – from the time 20 years back, when it was a visionary club movement spearheaded by Shuya Okino – to the point now where it's focused into a core jazz combo that brings beautiful new life to Okino's music! The group are a wonderfully strong combo – with trumpet, tenor, piano, bass, and drums – a quintet at heart, but with Okino's leadership as the sixth sextet member – as well as guest work from some other players in the Japanese scene. But maybe the most amazing aspect this time around is the return of vocalist Navasha Daya – who you might remember from the sublime Fertile Ground group years back – and who contributes fantastic lyrics to two tracks on the set – pushing the already righteous energy of the instrumental jazz on the record into even more positive territory! Daya sings on two of the album's nine tracks – which might be worth the price of admission alone – but the rest of the group is wonderful, too – and titles include "We Are One", "Ancient Future", "Mission", "Song For Unity", "Peaceful Wind", "Children Of Peace", "Rising", and "Love Light". Crown/Teichiku (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wicked funk from Japanese keyboardist Norio Maeda – also a hell of an arranger, too – as you'll hear on this superb set from the start of the 70s! The record's one of those key albums that took a 60s groovy Japanese sound much further into the future – giving the whole thing a sharper edge, with heavier drums – and using trippy guitar, weird flute lines, and keyboards to give the whole thing a vibe that's almost more blacksploitation or kung fu soundtrack than most of what Maeda had done before! Tracks are all pretty lively, and work together as a sweet set of grooves – almost with a funky Lalo Schifrin sort of vibe – and all the notes and titles are in Japanese, or else we'd have even more information to convey. Two great tunes from the legendary Terry Callier – served up here on a limited 45! "Ordinary Joe" is one of the coolest, catchiest songs ever from Terry – a track with a snapping jazzy vibe and a hell of a hook – still as righteous as his more complicated music, but a lot more compact and groovy too! "Look At Me Now" is a rare gem from the years before Terry Callier broke big on full length albums – a tune from the late 60s, but still done with Charles Stepney – but in a groove that's maybe equal parts 60s soul and Cadet/Concept sophistication – which makes for a completely sublime sound overall! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Impulse/Universal (Japan), 1972. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Two righteous tracks from Archie Shepp – served up here on a limited edition 45! "Attica Blues" might be the closest thing that Archie ever got to cutting a funk tune – thanks to some great wah-wah guitar in the groove – but the song also has a completely righteous message of power, sung by spiritual singers in a style that's right up there with the best post-Paris sound of Shepp! "Quiet Dawn" is different – moodier and mellow, but still very soulful – with this very odd-tuned vocal line over these rolling, blue-tinged rhythms – peppered gently by horns, but with a very fragile feel too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Gary Calamar & Phil GalloRecord Store Days – From Vinyl To Digital & Back Again (paperback) ... Book
Sterling, 2010. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Somebody's finally gone out and written a book about one subject we can really get behind – the Record Store – and not only that, they've done a beautiful job with the entire package too! The book takes a look at the importance of the record store – not just historically, but culturally as well – with an especially important focus on the need for stores in the digital age, as a way of keeping both the music, and interest in the music, alive and well for generations to come! As you might guess from the subtitle, authors Calamar and Gallo have a bit of an agenda in their portrait – but they really pave the way with some great recollections of record stores past, incredible bits not just from folks who owned and worked in stores, but also from famous shoppers, artists, and collectors too. And even cooler, the book is filled with lots of great photographs – wonderful images of old stores in color and black and white, plus lots of great sidebar bits that help draw a focus on key issues in record retail. If you, like us, get a bit of a rush every time you walk into a record store, then you'll be sure to get an equal rush from this book – a wonderful tome that's one we can send home to our parents, and finally show them we've got a career worth a bit of respect! 238 pages, hardcover, and really beautifully done.
