A handful of different Cal Tjader moments from the Monterey Jazz Festival – a frequent setting for Cal's live talents, given his close proximity as a member of the Bay Area scene! The core material here is from Tjader's 1958 performance – featured here in 5 tracks that include Vince Guaraldi on piano, Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria on percussion, and Buddy DeFranco on clarinet – the last of whom is a really unique addition to Cal's group, and makes the tunes sound quite different from his studio sides of the time. 1958 titles include "Summertime", "Now's The Time", "Tumbao", and "Cubano Chant" – and other cuts include a 1972 reading of "Manteca" with sweet electric piano, and Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry on trumpets; a 1974 version of "Afro Blue" with Jerome Richardson and Frank Strazzeri; a 1977 version of "If You Could See Me Now" with John Lewis on piano; and a 1980 take on "Speak Low" with Roger Glenn on flute. Most titles here are previously unreleased – and the collection's a great match with Cal's classic work on Fantasy. CD

Well, in our opinion, Cal went Latin right from the start, practically. Still, this "Goes Latin" LP is one of his best of the genre from the old days, and features a host of great players like Lonnie Hewitt, Chombo Silva, Mongo Santamaria, Paul Horn, and Willie Bobo. The album includes Cal's semi-hit "Black Orchid", plus "Mi China", "Bonita", "Contigo", and "Mambo At The M". Very nice, with a sound that would become Cal's trademark in the years right after this album. A hip little set that's as groovy as its cover – a whole batch of cat-themed tunes from the 50s and 60s, most of them in a hip jazzy sort of style! Things are never too kitty-creepy – as they are with that lady down the street who owns way too many cats – and instead, most of the numbers here have a clean, lean sort of sound that's more in the mode of a 50s jazz "cat" than that of the four-legged, furry type. About half the numbers here are instrumentals with a really mod feel, and the rest are vocal numbers, of a variety of different genres – all put together in a way that's surprisingly fresh, and plenty darn groovy throughout. A beautiful bit of Latin funk – and one of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Candido! The album's one of the first that has Candido stepping out of the straighter Latin jazz mode of earlier years – working with a funky lineup of players arranged by the mad genius Joe Cain, and going for a mixed electric/acoustic sound that reminds us of Mongo Santamaria's best work – only a heck of a lot funkier! In addition to killer conga licks from Candi, the album features some really heavy guitar and organ lines, plus some good choppy sax work – wailing away with a really solid soulful sound. Imagine Booker T & The MGs working in Spanish Harlem – and you've got part of the picture of this one! One of the few 70s albums as a leader from reedman Ronnie Cuber – a player who'd already been making some great appearances on studio sessions with giants like George Benson, Mongo Santamria, and Lonnie Smith – as well as even a few Steely Dan records! But despite that ability to sound tight in the studio, Ronnie really shows a completely different side of his talents here – a hard-burning approach to baritone sax, with a deftness that rivals Pepper Adams in a similar setting – a quality that almost feels like a tenor at times, given Cuber's dexterity and speed of improvisation. The rest of the group's great, too – and includes Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – who really provide the right amount of soulful hardbop to keep things crackling. Titles include "Star Eyes", "Rifftide", "Tin Tin Deo", "Samba D'Orfeo", "Misty", "Sudwest Funk", and "Prince Albert". CD

Two great lost titles from the Atlantic jazz catalog of the 60s! Horizons is a beautiful and oft-overlooked album of modal jazz tracks performed by Chicago jazz musician Ira Sullivan – who normally plays trumpet and tenor, but who also here shows his amazing talent on soprano sax. Sullivan plays in a great style that's almost a pop version of Coltrane's spiralling style on "My Favorite Things" – rolling the notes over and over in a beautiful exploratory style. This format works especially well on the set's longer tracks – like "Ninevah", "Horizons", and "Norwegian Wood" – but the whole thing's pretty great! Little Giant is a rare album by the great west coast Latin trumpeter Luis Gasca, and argubly the best album he ever recorded! The set was recorded in New York during the late 60's, and features a great lineup of musicians that includes Paul Griffin on piano, Joe Henderson on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Mongo santamaria on conga, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The style's a mix of soul jazz, Latin, and bits of modal riffing – and the record features some beautiful large arrangements by Gasca and Mark Levine, in a style that's a bit like some of Duke Pearson's work from the late 60s, but handled with a bit more of an edge. Tracks include "Coisa No. 2", "Afro Blue", "Joy Ride", and "Sweet Pea". 2CDs at a nice nice price! CD

A great little set from keyboardist Lyman Woodard – and one that's definitely got some of the Latin flavor promised by the spelling in the title! Woodard's still playing some mighty nice organ and electric piano lines, but the group here also has some added Latin percussion at the bottom – and this expansive, warmly soulful sound that almost reminds us of some of the late 70s Fania fusion funk records – especially work by Mongo Santamaria when he was using a lot of Fender Rhodes! A young Regina Carter is on the record – both vocalizing and playing violin – and the tracks are long, and really compelling – with a complexity that's different than other Woodard albums, yet still just the right sort of groove. Titles include "Itanita", "Don't Stay Away", "Dedication", and "And The Ship Sails On". CD

A fantastic collection of music from Cuba – not the jazzy descarga styles that led to salsa, nor the more romantic singers that are maybe some of the nation's best-known artists – but instead a wealth of work that mixes raw percussion and vocals to support the spiritual practice of santeria! The music here represents a shifting spiritual culture that was taking place in the Caribbean during the 20th Century – as African and Spanish ideas were coming into play with each other – forming new modes of understanding, which also led to new musical practices as well! Many of these recordings were done at the same time that larger, more polished orchestras were dominating the Cuban scene – but they represent rootsier, rawer recordings that often just have percussion and vocals as the dominant force – sometimes quite a surprise when you might hear a bigger star as part of the lineup. As with every collection on the Fremeaux label, the package offers up a lot of music for the price, and a very detailed set of notes in both French and English – with a total of 66 tracks in all – including work by Chano Pozo, Miguelito Valdez, Celina Y Reutilio, Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Sabu, Arsenio Rodriguez, Julio Gutierez, and others – as well as a set of field recordings done on acetate in 1940! The core sound features vibes and piano jamming away nicely, really hitting some great modal rhythms – but this album's also got an added bonus in the presence of alto player Bobby Capers, an old bandmate of Mongo Santamaria, and a real killer of a player on a hard Latin groove! Capers really makes this album shine – cutting in some hard-edged sax solos amidst the warmer pulse of the vibes and piano – and titles include some hard grooving classics like "Rip a Dip", "Dilly Dali", "Blues Waltz", "Milestones", "Red Top", and "Sunday Go Meetin'". Although Hubert Laws went onto cut some pretty snoozy fusion records in later years, these early Atlantic albums find him playing with a great soul jazz groove, laying down nice slightly-funky flute solos with a very good groove. The group on the Laws of Jazz includes a young Chick (then called "Armando") Corea on piano, then a much more Latin-tinged player – and the rest of the group includes Richard Davis on bass and Bobby Thomas on drums. Laws' flute is the main solo vehicle – and tracks include "Bimbe Blue", "Miss Thing", "All Soul", and "Black Eyed Peas & Rice". A great little set of Latin jazz! At the time of Flute By-Laws, Hubert Laws was playing with Mongo Santamaria's group – and for this second solo outing, Laws borrows a lot of grooves from Mongo's bag, and also hits a few tasty lines of his own. There's some killer tight Latin numbers with a groovy 60s feel – like "Bloodshot", "Let Her Go", "Baila Cinderella", and "No You'd Better Not" – plus some other tasty jazz numbers like "Mean Lene" and "Strange Girl". Players include a host of Latin jazz crossover talents like Chick Corea, Jimmy Owens, Garnett Brown, and Ray Lucas – as well as strict Latin players like Cachao and Victor Pantoja – and the album's one of Laws' best ever! 2 live cookers from Cal Tajder – back to back on a single CD! The set begins with Night At The Blackhawk – one of Cal's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince Guaraldi on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, Willie Boby on drums, and Mongo Santamaria on congas – all musicians who'd previously helped Tjader hit some of his best Latin grooves! But the addition of Silva on a few tracks here really makes the set crackle – giving it a gutsy, soulful fee that you don't always get on some of Tjader's other records. Tracks are longish – and titles include the nice original "Bill B", plus jazzy versions of "I Love Paris", "Blue & Sentimental", and "Night In Tunisia". Live & Direct is great live work from Cal Tjader – one of a number of sets but at his home turf of the Blackhawk Nightclub in San Francisco! The album's nicely laidback, with tracks that stretch out a bit more than Tjader's studio work for Fantasy Records – often hitting a slight Latin groove at times, but with a bit more of a straight jazz vibes feel overall! The great Lonnie Hewitt's on the group on piano, coloring in the tunes with some very soulful notes – and in addition to Cal's vibes, the rest of the lineup includes Victor Venegas on bass, and Willie Bobo on drums. Mongo Santamaria on congas and Rolando Lozano on flute join in on the track "Mambo Terrifico" – and other titles include "Racoon Straits", "Bad & The Beautiful", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". A really ear-opening set – one that introduces us to a world we'd never have heard otherwise – filled with music that's maybe even groovier and more evocative than we could imagine! There's loads of very trippy styles going on here – almost as if the whole Mongolian scene had gone psychedelic during the 60s – later than the rest of the world, and with a different flavor that mixes regional elements with cool guitar lines, fuzzy production, and all sorts of rock psych elements from the 60s that are pulled back out, and reformed in weird ways for these tunes! Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s.
