Art Blakey & The Afro-Drum EnsembleAfrican Beat ... LP
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $69.99
A completely righteous mix of jazz and African percussion – put together by drummer Art Blakey at a time when he was riding high with the Jazz Messengers, but also was willing to work on great experiments like this! The album's years ahead of its time – and arguably opens the door for countless spiritual jazz projects like this in the 70s, more proof that Blakey was a groundbreaking artist who was always opening doors for others! Blakey's own work on drums is joined by percussion from Montego Joe, Chief Bey, Garvin Masseux, James Ola, Folami, Robert Crowder, and Solomon Ilori – the last of whom would record his own record for Blue Note – and the rest of the group features Yusef Lateef on flute and tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and the great Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass – a great choice for the record, given that he was mixing together similar modes on his own records of the time. Titles include "Tobi Ilu", "Love, The Mystery Of", and "Obirin African". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty stereo pressing, with Van Gelder stamp! Cover has a small bit of splitting in one corner, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Lafayette Afro Rock BandSoul Makossa ... LP
Musidisc/Strut (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Amazing Afro Funk from one of the greatest groups of the genre – The Lafayette Afro Rock Band, a funky ensemble recording in Paris in the early 70s! The group were working in a hotbed of cross-cultural styles – and brought American funk rhythms firmly into play with African influences – creating grooves that were even heavier and harder than the work at the time by Fela Kuti, and which have stood for years as some of our favorite funk records! This album's one of their best – named after the title cut, their great take on Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (done here even funkier than the original!), and featuring other great tracks, like "Voodounon", "Azeta", and "Hihache" – all of them filled with heavy bass, tight drums, and fuzzy guitar – plus the cuts "Nicky" and "Oglenon". Orquestra Afro BrasileiraOrquestra Afro Brasileira (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Polysom (Brazil), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 42.99
Totally fantastic work from this legendary group – a very early example of African and Brazilian modes crossing together – and served up in a style that's maybe even more hard-hitting than similar projects in more recent years! There's a very percussive sound to the album – as if the group are exploring West African influences on batucada modes – with vocals that lilt and soar over the top, almost with some samba inflections – although some numbers with larger horns and other instruments take on a completely different vibe! The whole thing is fantastic – an example of fresh experimentation that's in the territory of the Afro Sambas project by Baden Powell – with titles that include "Ago Lonan", "Rei N'Aruanda", "Nagana (Senhor)", "Xango". "Os Oinho De Iaia", "Babaloxa", "Tire O Calundu", "Palmares", "India", "Mo-Fi-La-Do-Fe", "Saudacao Aos Orixas", and "Canto Para Omolu". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Solomon Ilori & His Afro Drum EnsembleAfrican High Life ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the most roosty albums on Blue Note – and a fairly straight session of African percussion tracks by Solomon Ilori and his Afro Drum Ensemble. Unlike similar albums by Art Blakey, this one lacks any strong sort of jazz component – and really just features fairly straight African tracks, with heavy percussion, and touches of highlife grooves. The record features guitar by Jay Berliner, bass by Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and flute by Hosea Taylor – plus work by Montego Joe, Garvin Masseux, Chief Bey, and Robert Crowder, who often show up on other 60s sessions of this nature. Titles include "Follow Me To Africa", "Tolani", and "Ise Oluwa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lafayette Afro Rock BandMalik ... LP
Makossa/Strut, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of Afro funky soul – one of a few albums recorded by the legendary Lafayette Afro Rock Band! The set has an incredible blend of American funk, African rhythms, and European production – recorded in the heady cross-cultural scene of early 70s Paris – with a sound that's often imitated, but never duplicated! Funky guitar snakes through electric piano riffing, rolling basslines, and some really heavy percussion – occasionally supporting a bit of chorus vocals, but mostly going for a hard-grooving instrumental sound overall! The set includes the massive break track "Darkest Light", sampled by PE and others – plus the tracks "Baba Hya", "Djungi", "Raff", "Conga", "Avi-Vo", and "Malik". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnny Rae's Afro Jazz SeptetHerbie Mann's African Suite ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A confusing title, but a wonderful little record! The album's as much a Herbie Mann Latin session as it is a record by Johnny Rae – which is probably why the album's titled as such – and the group on the set features Rae on vibes, Herbie on flute, Jack Six on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums, Bobby Corwin on piano, and Jose Mangual, Patato Valdes, and Victor Pantoja on an assortment of Latin and African percussion. The groove is tremendous – Latinized jazz, but with a real tension between the heavy percussion on the bottom and the ligher flute and vibes on the top – especially on the album's more tribal, African-styled numbers. The "suite" features 7 tracks in all – 5 composed by Herbie ("Sorimao", "Beouin", "Sudan", "Ekunda", "Guinean"), plus a version of Sonny Rollins' "St Thomas", and the track "Jungle Fantasy" by Noro Morales. LP, Vinyl record album

Mira, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Groovy groovy Latin soul jazz instrumentals, very much in the vein of Cal Tjader's work for the Skye label, and with a similar vibes-oriented feel! This is the sort of stuff that we used to pass by because we didn't think it was "authentic" enough. Now, though, we really dig it for its groovy mix of styles, and it's unique approach to both Latin and jazz! Great all the way through, and titles include "Star Eyes", "Viva Cepeda", 'Discovery Three", and "Spartacus". LP, Vinyl record album

Panart, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very heavy duty Afro-Cuban material, with a focus on carnaval grooves – played by 2 different groups: Carlos Barbeira's Banda Kubavana, and Alberto Zayas Grupo Afro-Cubano. We like the Grupo Afro-Cubano the best, as they have a nice raw percussion sound, and a very hard groove with ensemble vocals. Titles include "Congas De Las Bolleras", "El Alacran", "Los Marqueses De Atares", "Conga De Santiago", and "Conga A Cecilia Valdes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Love Childs Afro-Cuban Blues BandSpandisco ... LP
Midsong, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Although the group was neither an Afro-Cuban ensemble, nor a blues band, they certainly earn the "Spandisco" title of this one – an album filled with longer club tracks arranged and produced by Michael Zager. The one nice legacy of their Afro-Cuban name, though, is a good committment to jazzy solos – played here by the likes of Frank Wess, Ronnie Cuber, Larry Feldman, and Michael Zager. Steve Gadd plays drums, so there's a nice kick at times – and the record features versions of "Oye Como Va" and "Spanish Harlem", plus the cuts "Spandisco Band", "Speak Up Mambo", and "Spandisco". ✨✧ Wali & The Afro-CaravanHome Lost & Found (The Natural Sound) ... LP
Solid State, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very hip record – especially for the sometimes square Solid State label! The group is a very percussion-heavy one, with slight touches of jazz, and a very Afro-centric approach that is said to have "mixed appeal" in the liner notes. Wali plays conga and bongos, and does a bit of vocalizing, and he's joined by "J" Murray (Juggy?) on tenor and Ray Lewis on flute, plus bass and additional percussion. The tracks are long, and build with a slow intensity as more elements join into the mix over time. Includes a strong version of "Afro Blue" – plus "Mystique", "Journey To Mecca", and "Zulu For Hugh". ✨✧ Afro-American EnsembleFree The Black Man's Chains ... LP
GSF, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pretty cool album of soul tracks, based around a political/historical theme – in a manner that reminds us a lot of Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth, by 24-Carat Black, or The Auction, by David Axelrod. The work's an extended suite dealing with the legacy of slavery and persecution in African-American heritage – and it's mostly got a mellow, spiritual sound to it. However, the album includes one great funk track – the choppy "Fair Skin Man", which has some great guitar, and a really catchy groove! Other tracks include "LOVE", "We Are Here", "Soul President", "Slave I Wanna Be Free", "Free The Black Man's Chains", and "Black Is Black". LP, Vinyl record album

Fierce funky grooves from the legendary Nico Gomez – a set cooked up in Europe, but heavy with influences from the other side of the Atlantic – from Havana all the way up to New York! There's definitely a Latin groove to the record – one that's similar to other Gomez productions – but there's also lots of heavy funk at the bottom – with basslines that drive most numbers along boldly, really raw percussion played with a nice sense of spontaneity, and these super-tight keyboards and guitars that you might find in American funk! The mix of modes is very much in the best spirit of contemporary groups like Chakachas or Lafayette Afro Rock Band – and titles include "Caballo Negro", "Lupita", "Baila Chibiquiban", "Pa! Pa! Pa! ✨✧ Herbie Mann & The Afro-Jazz Sextet + Four TrumpetsCommon Ground ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin jazz previously on labels like Verve and United Artists – but given a bit more of the Atlantic-era punch here as well! The group features some wonderful vibes from John Rae – whose tones ring out beautifully on some of the best numbers – plus a mix of Latin and African-styled percussion from Ray Barretto, Olatunjii, and Ray Mantilla – who really make the record cook. A few tunes feature an added trumpet group, and the rest are mostly just flute and percussion – on titles that include "St Thomas", "Walkin", "Uhuru", "High Life", and "Sawa Sawa De". ✨✧ Nat BirchallAfro Trane ... LP
Ancient Archive Of Sound (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $35.99 39.99
One of the most beautiful, spiritual albums ever from saxophonist Nat Birchall – and that's really saying a lot, if you know his other records! As you can guess from the title, the spirit of John Coltrane looms large on the record – and the tracks are a mix of Coltrane classics and new material by Nat – performed in these long, flowing modes that balance soulful lines on tenor and soprano with work on percussion, mbira, harmonium, piano, and even a bit of bass clarinet – the latter of which is a nod to a key moment when Eric Dolphy stepped in to the Coltrane group! Yet despite the Coltrane influence, the sound here is very original – all Nat's own, as he layers his performances on the other instruments with really well-crafted saxophone solos – at a level that feels much more like a small spiritual combo presenting the music than just Birchall alone. Tremendously beautiful – even better on record than it sounds on paper – with titles that include "Trane's Garden", "Dahomey Dance", "India", "Folk Song For Trane", "Acknowledgement", and "Afro Train". Dig This Way (Italy), Early 1970s. New Copy ... $34.99 39.99
The cover promises psychedelic Afro Funk, and the record definitely delivers the goods – bringing together four rare singles from this obscure Nigerian group – into a set that marks the first-ever full length release of their music! The sound is lean, and inspired equally by rock and funk – especially in the guitars, which can be trippy and funky at the same time – almost with a quality that might echo the work of The Counts in the US at the time, but with production that's got the rawness of a funky 45! The whole thing is super-funky throughout – and titles include "Keep On Moving", "Rough Rider", "Jumpin Cat", "Day Dreamer", "Somebody's Gonna Win Or Lose", and both vocal and instrumental versions of "In The Jungle". OlatunjiZungo! – Afro Percussion ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of Olatunji's best LPs, and a record that breaks out of his usual straight hard percussion stuff by adding some jazz players like Yusef Lateef, Clark Terry, and George Duvivier. There's also some singers augmenting the ensemble, but they drop out in parts, and the percussion and jazz take over. Olatunji's joined by Ray Barretto and Montego Joe on congas, and the whole thing grooves like one of Art Blakey's jazz/percussion experiments. 7 tracks: "Masque Dance", "Zungo", "Ajua", "Esum Buku Wa-Ya", "Gelewenwe", "Jolly Mensah" and "Philistine". Incredible! This is a stunning set of African-inspired jazzy percussion tracks – similar to some of the work done by Art Blakey on his Orgy In Rhythm albums, but with a lot better horn work, and with an overall conception that's much more unified! AK Salim did some sleepier work for Savoy in the 50s – but by the time of this 1965 recording, he was emerging as a progressive composer with a strong talent for bringing together disparate moods and styles. This rare recording was one of his best works ever, and it's one of the most unusual sides cut by Prestige in the 60s. It features Johnny Coles, Pat Patrick, and Yusef Lateef out front on horns – plus backing by a host of Latin and African percussionists. Rare Afro Rock from Nigeria's Semi-Colon group – and it's an astonishingly strong record! It's got fuzzy guitar grooves and spacey electic piano that are indebted to the global psych soul and rock scenes of the late 60s and early 70s – but the rhythmic sensibility, percussion and vocals are prime 70s Nigeria. The record has 3 great jams per side, which is perfect – allowing each number plenty of space to stretch, and sink into to a hypnotic groove, but they're just succinct enough to leave us wanting more! Excellent work by Lonnie Smith – a free-flowing album of long jazzy grooves that's kind of an extension of his Blue Note albums, touched with more of the electricity of his 70s playing! There's some killer rhythms on the album – courtesy of drummers Jamey Hudad and Ben Riley, and electric bassists Ron Carter and Ralphe Armstrong – and Lonnie's on organ grooving alongside a young Joe Lovano, who plays some killer tenor and soprano sax – and the album's got these really long, open cuts that definitely hint at the more spiritual look of the cover. Titles include the 15 minute jammer "Spirits Free", plus "Afrodesia", "Favors", "Straight To The Point", and "The Awakening". LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Weston & Langston HughesUhuru Afrika – Afro-Percussion ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good Gatefold ... $48.99
Incredible work by Randy Weston – light years ahead of his trio material from just a few years before! The album is one of his most progressive from the early years, and features an extended suite dedicated to the newly-won freedoms of the African Nations – with occasional lyrics by Langston Hughes, and arrangements by the great Melba Liston! The material's political, radical, and modernist – but it never fails to groove, and uses its politics to achieve an added emotional punch, as in the best work from the same time by Max Roach and Charles Mingus – and some of their larger progressive projects. The group is much larger than you'd expect from Randy – with Benny Bailey and Richard Williams on trumpets, Slide Hampton on trombone, Sahib Shihab on reeds, and Candido and Olatunji on percussion – which really dominates the record. The whole thing is amazing – one of the purest realizations of the African influence in Weston's music – and movements of the suite are entitled "Uhuru Kwanza", "African Lady", "Bantu", and "Kucheza Blues" LP, Vinyl record album

Four Flies (Italy), Mid 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 39.99
A whole new world of grooves we've never heard before – music from a short stretch on the Italian scene when local artists were really taken with the new developments in Afro Funk, and started to serve up some fresh styles of their own! The music here is maybe a blend of West African sounds and sound library modes – often leaner than the large group ensembles of Fela and some of his contemporaries, which also makes the tracks perfect for the clubs as well – but with a vibe that's sharper and tighter than some of the Afro/disco crossover cuts of the time! The selection of tracks is wonderful, and the whole thing is very revelatory – with titles that include "Why O" by Beryl Cunningham, "Kumbayero" by Weyman Corporation, "L'Unica Chance" by Walter Rizzati, "Amore" by Chrisma, "Tabu Tuba (part 1)" by I Robots, "Africa Sound" by Jean Paul & Angelique, "Contrabbando Di Fagioli" by Ramasandiran Somusundaram, "MAAGO" by Prognosi Riservata, "The Voodoo Lady" by Lara Saint Paul, and "Soul Makossa" by African Revival. Reedman Nat Birchall digs deep for this masterful set – creating timeless music that easily stands next to the work of some of his key ancestors in jazz – especially musicians of the generation of John Coltrane! The set is one that has Birchall layering his tenor, soprano, and baritone solos with other self-created sounds – on piano, organ, balaphon, shruti box, bass, and other percussion – all with this slow-building, extremely spiritual quality that never lets up! The music feels much more like the work of a cohesive jazz combo than it does a solo performance by one artist – and that's another testament to the ever-growing powers of Nat, one of our favorite forces in jazz for more than the past decade! An album that really lives up to its title, and one that brings together a host of rare singles from this legendary group – all of which are maybe even funkier than some of the tracks on their albums of the time! The bulk of the record is from very rare 7" singles issued on the Albarika Store label, and the set's completed by two rare compilation cuts as well – and the result is a record that's overflowing with hard-edged gems that really show off the unique funky sound of the TP Orchestra Poly Rhythmo – lots of heavy drums at the bottom, cool criss-crossing organ lines, and a style that's a lot leaner than that of Fela and some of his contemporaries. Titles include "Mi Si Ba To", "Minko E So Non Moin", "Gbeti Ma Diro", "Segla", "Kou Tche Kpo So O", "Mi Ve Wa Se", and "Aiha Ni Kpe We". LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". LP, Vinyl record album

The record's incredibly hip – and even on material like "Theme From Love Story", "Fire & Rain", and "Passacaglia In C Minor", Laws and the group soar away into another plane of being! The set features a stunning mix of jazz and Latin playing, in a manner that was to forever shape the future of both musics – with solo work by Flip Phillips and Charlie Parker, and Latin percussion by Mario Bauza, Jose Mangual, Candido, and Machito. The writing and playing is superb, and Chico O'Farrill arranged the whole thing with an energy level matching his best early work! LP, Vinyl record album

Massive Afro Funk! This slammin' batch of funky African (and African-sounding) tunes was put together by the same team who did the Africa Funk set on Harmless – and it's even better than that one was! Like Africa Funk, this set compiles a whopping batch of rare tracks from the 70s, plus a few from other eras that have a 70s feel – and the mix of tracks is filled with heavy drums, pounding percussion, funky keyboards, and choppy guitar riffs. You might have a few of the cuts on here, but most of them are quite rare, and the set's well worth having for newcomers and trainspotters alike! Titles include "Silver Black Summer Day" by Living Funk, "Rhythm On Rhythm" by Sookie, "Jungle Funk" by Nkengas, "Samba" by Miriam Makeba, "Everybody's Groove" by Ashantis, "Karam Bani" by Buari, and a nice remake of "Soul Makossa" by The Gaytones! A long-overdue follow up to the legendary first Ghana Special collection – and one that presents a second chapter of work – not just from the regional scene, but from a time when some of its best artists were also recording in other nations too! The result is a more powerful, soulful style than before – not in a too-commercial "world music" way, but instead blended with elements of soul, funk, and newer club styles to really kick up the groove a bit more – while still keeping all the best elements of the 70s groove intact! There's definitely some drum machine rhythms along the way, but the overall vibe is still nice and warm – and very different than more electro-styled work from the South African scene of the time – and as always with Soundway, the notes and track selection are superb. A completely unique little session – and a record that's every bit as musically striking as you might guess from its title and cover! The date's a rare Latin-tinged one for trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a record that takes his usually smooth sound and sets it up against octet backings with horns from JJ Johnson on trombone, Cecil Payne on baritone sax, and Hank Mobley on tenor – plus piano from Horace Silver, bass from Oscar Pettiford, and drums from Art Blakey – plus added congas from Patato Valdes! The expanded group plays with a great sense of power – really pushing Kenny's sound tremendously – and although the album also features a few tracks by a smaller group with less percussion, these also have a bit of a Latin/exotic tinge too. Some of the rhythms have an Ethiopian sense of slinkiness, while others hit more of a full-on Nigerian groove – and the whole thing's never forced, never gimmicky, and instead just the right sort of setting for Julius to re-emerge as a true giant of his generation. Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Although most Nonesuch Explorer sessions were ethnographic ones, recorded in the field by the label's engineers – this one's a studio session, recorded in New York by a group that's reputedly from Ghana, but which seems to be kind of a "fake" one from our perspective. Why? Well, because Charles Earland's playing tenor, for one – and although his native Philly was kind of far away from New York, we never heard it referred to as "Ghana"! Other players here are US-based jazz ones, too – like drummers Sonny Morgan and Robert Crowder, vibist Garvine Masseaux, and bassist George Brooks. Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos of the past few decades! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. The players come together here in a really wonderful sound – partly extending from the postwar multi-trombone experiments of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, but with occasional nods to New Orleans music, Afro Funk, and other styles that can be heavier on the horns! Female trombonist Nabou Claerhout leads the group, which features four other trombonists on most tracks – and the leadoff track also features guest work from Robin Eubanks. Titles include "Wistful", "A Duet For Three", "Hutch", "Murphy All The Way", "Slide Unit", and "A Day At The Huge Field With A Little House". LP, Vinyl record album

The set includes two takes on "Impressions", one more out than the other, plus "Blue Valse", "Afro Blue", and "Naima". Good live stuff that shows a new dimension of Coltrane, but which also doesn't succumb to the craziness of some of his other live sets. LP, Vinyl record album

The tracks are a mix of styles, but they all have a fairly traditional Afro-Cuban groove. Titles include "Que Coco", "El Mantequero", "Micaela", "Maria Teresa", and "Borinquen". That's quite an image on the cover, and Curly Castro follows through strongly with all the Afro-Futurist expectations it might trigger – not just in his words, but in the way the album comes together – as some sort of a moody, unified document – powerful words in the frontline, but all this sort of darkly shimmering static at the back! The intensity of the record never lets up, and contributions from Billy Woods, Mr Lif, Margel The Sophant, and Breeze Brewin only seem to add fuel to the fire – on tracks that include "Kill Her Priest", "Freehuey Fitteds", "Killmonger Was Right", "Khujo Taught Me", "Bleek Shadows", "F Stands For Hampton", "Black August", "Weapon 13X", and "Raynathan & Romello". Yussef Dayes works here under a title that was first coined by Rahsaan Roland Kirk to refer to jazz – but Dayes takes the term to a whole new level with this groundbreaking set – really moving past jazz to unlock a whole field of soulful expression – served up an excellent group at the core, and key contributions from very hip guests throughout! Dayes has always been someone who defies expectations, but here he's going past just some sort of unconventionality to really make his own mark in music – letting an instrumental solo take center stage when needed, or working through vocals in another moment – but all with this effortless flow that really comes together over the course of the album! The group features Charlie Stacey on keyboards, Alexander Bourt on percussion, and Venna on tenor – and guests include Shabaka Hutchings, Leon Thomas, Miles James, Theon Cross, Chronixx, and others. The killer debut as a leader from percussionist Modesto Duran – an artist who played on a whole host of albums in the 50s and 60s – Latin records, exotica gems, and plenty more – all of which seem to resonate strongly with the work on this album! The set's got a vibe that echoes the cover nicely – Latin music, but with a definite hint of more tribal elements too – which means plenty of Modesto's percussion in the mix, on tracks that often have a nice conga solo somewhere there in the mix! Production is great, with plenty of echo – and the album is somewhere in the same space as better-known work from Sabu Martinez or Augie Colon from the time. A lost early chapter in the career of Roberta Flack – material recorded during the sessions for her legendary First Take album, but unissued at the time – and presented here with an amazing demonstration of the depth of her young talents! All the genius of First Take is in place here – that groundbreaking territory between jazz and soul that set Roberta apart from the pack, right from the start – but there's also a wider range of currents going on – maybe some more jazz-based numbers, mixed with other soul-referenced titles too – a wider span that furthers the role that Flack plays as a bridge between the 60s innovations of Nina Simone and a host of others to follow. The group is just a trio – Flack on piano with Marshall Hawkins on bass and Bernard Sweetney on drums – but the tunes have a very wide-open vibe that's very visionary, and every bit as great as Roberta's debut! Titles include a stunning version of "Afro Blue", plus "It's Way Past Suppertime", "This Could Be The Start Of Something", "Groove Me", "To Sir With Love", "The Song Is Love", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out", "The House Song", and "Hush A Bye". One of Joe Henderson's greatest albums ever – a real treasure from his electric years at Milestone Records, and a set that showed he really had a lot more to offer for the scene of the 70s! The sound here is quite different than Joe's earlier work for Blue Note – a style that's sometimes soaring, sometimes mellow – but always moving forward with a tremendously fluid approach to the tenor sax. Joe's sense of phrasing and timing is impeccable – quite subtle at times, with these dark notes that hang beautifully in air on the ballads – and some sharper-edged qualities that really burst out strongly on the more upbeat tunes. The group's a great one too – and features Herbie Hancock on both acoustic and electric piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus additional trumpet by Mike Lawrence on 2 tracks. The tracks are each just titled "Variations" – and Femi's performance definitely seems improvised throughout, and set to these keyboard heavy grooves created by Hood – who also delivers lots of great keyboard solos too! There's a lot more jazz here than you'd expect on a Femi Kuti album – yet the set also nods to some Afro-styled grooves at points too – a real delight over the course of the eight tracks on the set. The quality of the work is excellent – better than on any of the group's American releases in later years – and this one time Cuban-only release is the kind of gem that's was unjustly hard to track down in earlier years – all the while deserving of worldwide love! There's a bit more focus than before – still energy that's a lot like the best righteous jazz groups coming out of Chicago or St Louis at the same time, but maybe a bit more direct, too – and really showing some of the stronger spiritual tones that would only blossom more strongly in later years! Reedman Plunky Nakabinde is firmly at the helm of the group – on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – but the set also features great work from Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Babatunde on congas and drums, Phil Branch on bass, and Al-Hammond Raul on piano and percussion. The sounds are a bit less Afro-styled than on the Oneness records, but still have all the great spiritual currents – and titles include an excellent version of Pharoah Sanders' "Black Unity", plus the original tunes "Contradiction","Nia", "Black Experience", and "The End Of The Butterfly King". You've heard Kuroda play with Jose James over the years, but he comes up with a rich new groove here on his own – a mostly-instrumental mode that has his cool, compressed lines over some sweet contemporary funky backings – heavy on Fender Rhodes from Kris Bowers, and some tightly snapping live rhythms that really add a lot of energy to the record! James guests on one track – a great remake of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – and also produced the whole set – but the core strength of the record comes from Kuroda's trumpet, and the great keyboard lines of Bowers. One of Sun Ra's greatest albums of the 70s – recording during the same sessions that yielded the famous Space Is The Place record for Blue Thumb, and done with a very similar feel – an expansive configuration of the Arkestra in peak form! The range of expression is really incredible – from the spiritual soul jazz of "Pan Afro", to the lightly grooving June Tyson vocals of "Neptune", to the extended suite "Discipline 27-II", a stretched-out spacey number with vocal "dramatizing" by Ra, Tyson, Ruth Wright, and Judith Holton. That track's a particularly great one, with the kind of spiritual resonance behind the spacey approach that rarely comes through as strongly on other albums – but the whole set is wonderful, and judging how reminscient of it some of the best, similarly-minded underground jazz is decades later – the whole thing is an amazing testament to how strong Ra's influence is today. Some of the tightest funky 70s jamming ever – a lost gem from Ray & His Musical Court, a group that perfectly fuses JB/Horny Horns funk with beat-heavy Afro-Cuban groove! Ray and the group are one of the more obscure funky combos of the era, and it's a damn shame, because the group's tight-as-can-be amalgam of JB's style horn riffing and thumping Afro-Cuban percussion is some of the absolute best of its kind. A vintage set from the great Ebo Talyor – an artist who's been recording new music in recent years, but who sounds even better here on one of his classics! Ebo's got a fair bit of jazz mixed in with his sound – a layering of flute, trombone, tenor, guitar, and keyboard parts with a strong sense of solo – a bit like South African jazz of the period, especially in the way the instruments really open up in the midtempo grooves! Rhythms are laidback, but still nicely present – not as speedy as Afro-Funk, but not much slower either – and there's also room for plenty of lyrics on the tracks, too – although it's the instrumental solos we think we like the best. Titles include "Reality", "If You Care", "Come Along", "Egya Edu", "Enye Wo Nyame Nko", and "Gyae Su Na Nkomo". LP, Vinyl record album

Thiiird PlaceThis Is Thiiird Place ... LP
Toyokasei (Japan), 2024. New Copy ... $36.99 44.99
An excellent funk group from Japan – one who pick up some of the fuller horns of the Stax Records or Afro Funk generations, mix it with some leaner rhythms at times – and also make a strong nod towards contemporary funk modes as well – but all without sounding like anyone else at all! Part of the strength of the set is the female vocals that come into play on some of the best numbers – putting forth the lyrics in a way that's not nearly as slavish to retro styles as you're used to finding in modern funk groups – a quality that's also echoed by the instrumentation in the group, which can sometimes be as jazzy as it is funky! Titles include "Miles Day Blues", "Ears", "Shoes", "Pass The Soup", and "Welcome To Third Place" – as well as a cover of the Pat Metheny tune "Last Train Home" and Pharoah Sanders' "Healing Song". Pat ThomasStage Two (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 28.99
Mad funky genius from Ghanian singer Pat Thomas – an artist who first rose to fame in the group of Ebo Taylor, and who's maybe even more fantastic here in the spotlight in the lead! The cover of the album maybe looks a bit more like a 60s photograph than the 70s stretch in which it was issued – and Pat's vocals often have an old school deep soul sort of approach too – sometimes mixed with jagged Afro Funk rhythms, other times in more laidback settings that allow him to flower even more as a singer! At points, there's almost some rocksteady organ work in the mix – which just adds to the charm of the record – on titles that include "I Need You Around", "Fishes", "Let Me Feel As I Am", "We're Coming Home", "La La La La La La", and "Let's Think It Over". Justin ThurgurNo Confusion ... LP
Funkiwala (UK), 2021. Near Mint- ... $13.99 16.99
Trombonist Justin Thurgur has spend time on the more global side of the scene in London during recent years – and here, he brings that experience to bear on a jazz set with a very unusual vibe! It's not easy to pick the straight influences of the tunes – there's currents of Afro Funk and South African jazz – but the end result is something else entirely, very contemporary, and very much Justin's own groove! The trombone is combined with piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond from Kishon Khan – in a shifting array that's heavy on percussion, guitar, and plenty of added horns too – all with a very righteous vibe. Titles include "Then & Now", "Straight Down To My Soul", "Meditations", "Mr Perceptionalization Is King", "No Confusion", and "You've Got To". LP, Vinyl record album

Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers NationalNo Condition Is Permanent ... LP
Mississippi, Early 70s. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
Seminal sounds from the Nigerian scene at the start of the 70s – music from the key figure of Celestine Ukwu, an artist who helped to reinvigorate the highlife style of years past, and pave the way for Afro Funk changes in years to come! Celestine's sound is nice and lean here – very rhythmic, with the guitar wrapped around the percussion and basslines in beautifully snakey action – while the vocals also have a quality that's maybe more personal than before – at points almost the raspy intimacy we love in some Brazilian singers! The package brings together work from three different albums from the early 70s – all long tracks that include "Tomorrow Is So Uncertain", "Onwunwa", "Ejina Uwa Nya Isi", "Ilo Abu Chi", and "Okwukuwe Na Ncheckwube". Vibro Succes Intercontinental OrchestraDrunkard ... LP
Ben/Dig This Way (Italy), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 39.99
A funky Nigerian gem from this lost 70s group – a combo who have a way of folding Afro Funk styles with some of the leaner West African styles of the time! There's horns in the group, and lots of bold percussion – but the guitars are really the key to the whole set – mixing together and ringing out with all sorts of cool chromatic elements alongside the vocals! The approach hints at highlife, but has a vibe that's all its own – and a nicely rough around the edges sort of quality that really keeps things spontaneous! Side one features the long "Drunkard" – and side two features "Matine Yanzoni" and "Herve". LP, Vinyl record album
