✨✧ Richard HarrisTramp Shining ... LP
ABC, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Pretty stunning work from the team of Richard Harris & Jimmy Webb – a shining point in both of their careers! Harris wasn't much of a singer, and was mostly known as an actor before these two albums. He teamed up with Jimmy Webb as the perfect foil for some of Webb's late sixties song-stories – crafted here into extended arrangements penned and conducted by Webb, who was just a wee lad at the time. The album went onto become a genre-busting superhit, and pretty much burned out the career of both parties involved – but with brilliance like this, you could hardly expect otherwise! The highlight here is the original 7 minute version of "MacArthur Park", but there's loads of other tracks that are great too – and titles include "Didn't We", "Lovers Such As I", "A Tramp Shining", "Paper Chase", and "In The Final Hours". Extra credit for being known as the original 'Dumbledore' from Harry Potter movie. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anita O'DayLady Is A Tramp ... LP
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Anita's strongest for Verve – featuring backing by a few different groups. One features Ralph Burns on piano and arrangments, leading a septet that includes Bill Harris, Cecil Payne, and Roy Eldridge – on the tracks "Rock N Roll Blues", "Love For Sale", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". Next up is Roy Kral, playing piano and arranging a quintet that includes Earl Backus on guitar and Jim Wilson on bongos – on tracks that include "No Soap, No Hope Blues", "Strawberry Moon", and "Speak Low". The last four tracks feature arrangements by Larry Russell – and they include "Pagan Love Song" and "Somebody's Crying". LP, Vinyl record album

Frank SinatraPal Joey ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good ... $4.99
A soundtrack as important to the sound of Sinatra on Capitol Records as High Society – maybe even more so, as it features seminal readings of Rogers & Hart standards "Bewitched", "I Could Write A Book", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and "There's A Small Hotel". Arrangements by Nelson Riddle, too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla At Juan-Les-Pins (Deluxe Edition) ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A hugely expanded version of the classic double live album by Ella Fitzgerald – featuring a total of 48 tracks in all, recorded over 2 nights at a French jazz festival in 1964, with backing by a group that includes Roy Eldridge and Tommy Flanagan. More than half of the set appears to be previously unissued – and the whole thing's packaged in a wonderful wraparound cover, with great art and notes, and new remastering on the CD. Titles include "Day In Day Out", "Just A Sittin & A Rockin", "People", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Boy From Ipanema", "The Cricket Song", "Perdido", "Summertime", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "I Love Being Here With You", "Goody Goody", "Cutie Pants", and "Mack The Knife". Some of the cuts repeat over the course of the performance, but they're done in slightly different versions. CD

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldLive At Mister Kelly's (previously unreleased) ... CD
Verve, 1958. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A real treasure from Ella Fitzgerald – a huge batch of previously unreleased live recordings from the 50s, all done at the legendary Chicago nightclub Mister Kelly's! However, the set's noteworthy not just because it's rare, but also because it offers Ella up in a relaxed, unfettered setting – a nice contrast to the smoother sound of the Verve studio albums of the time – or some of the more hyped-up festival appearances too – and instead, there's a personal, intimate sound here that's quite wonderful throughout, and which has really re-ignited our love of Ella's music! The sound quality is great – no dodgy crowd recording here – and the backing is by a trio that includes Lou Levy on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. 2CD set is divided up into a "main show" and a "late show" – and titles include "Perdido", "Your Red Wagon", "I'm Glad There Is You", "Bewitched", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Joe Williams Blues", "Witchcraft", "In The Wee Small Hours", "Exactly Like You", "S'Wonderful", and "My Funny Valentine". ✨✧ Ayako HosokawaMr Wonderful ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mellow vocals from the lovely Ayako Hosokawa – one of Japan's greatest jazz vocalists of the 70s, singing here in a warm and intimate setting. Ayako sings in English, mostly American standards plus a few pop numbers – and the backing for the set includes keyboards, tenor, guitar, and strings – flowing out in the best mellow style of the Three Blind Mice label of the time. The real standout cut is Ayako's great reading of "Feel Like Making Love" – worth the price of the album alone for its dope 70s groove – and other cuts include "When You Smile", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Misty", "Mr Wonderful", and "The Lady Is A Tramp". CD

✨✧ Sammy Davis, Jr.That's All! ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The greatest entertainer ever? We think so – and this 2LP set offers Sammy D in the best possible way to get him: live, and in the very familiar turf of the Sands Hotel. This live album, and it's counterpart (At The Cocoanut Grove, also on Reprise) are, in our opinion, Sammy's best recordings – because they feature him ripping through a bunch of material, doing lots of great impressions and medleys, and really swinging with a tight little combo led by Michael Silva, the drummer. The groove is really jazzy – way jazzier than on some of Sammy's studio LPs from the time – and he runs through a range of material from pop tunes to standards, done in a style that's far different than you'd expect for the titles. The vocals are tight, heartfelt, but also given a professional little finesse that really makes them sparkle. Titles include "Ain't I", "Another Spring", "On A Clear Day", "As Long As She Needs Me", "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and 2 fantastic medleys with lots of jazzy songs. Heck, Dean Martin never got a chance to cut a double live album – and Frank really ever did one – so given that Sammy got a chance to do two of them, you've gotta figure the format really worked for him! This is the real Mr. Entertainment, and you owe it to yourself to hear him as he really was. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Richard Harris/Arif MardenProphet – By Kahil Gibran ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A spoken word classic – Richard Harris' reading of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet – all set to some sublime backings from Arif Mardin! Harris has an even more pointed style of pronunciation than on some of his previous records on ABC – less of a shining tramp than the British actor who first rose to fame – adding a colonialist twist to Gibran's words, which are then transformed into something else entirely by Mardin's backings. Music features keyboards from Bob James and Pat Rebillot, woodwinds from Phil Bodner, and some cool percussion too – making the set much more of a 70s groovy effort than you might expect – so much so, that Harris' vocals almost sound out of place (any chance of just hearing the instrumental tapes from the session?) Titles include "On Love", "On Marriage", "On Crime & Punishment", "The Farewell", and "On Death". (Spoken Word, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

Dino starts to experiment with the sort of 60s hobo/tramp/loser country songs that always worked perfectly with his alcoholic style. Titles include "King Of The Road", "My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You", "Bumming Around", "Birds & The Bees", "Born To Lose", and "Welcome To My World". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mel TormeLulu's Back In Town (aka Mel Torme & The Marty Paich Dek-Tette) ... CD
Bethlehem/Rhino, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Mel Torme – easily his best set ever, and a record that helped raise the bar for all other singers back in the 50s! A key part of the success of the set is the presence of Marty Paich as an arranger – as Marty swings the whole thing with a fluid groove that's really amazing, and which is a style that hadn't ever been done on record this well before. The group is filled with hip west coast players like Pete Candoli, Jack Montrose, Bob Cooper, and Bud Shank – all of whom really soar together, and elevate Mel's vocals from the older velvet fog mode, into a leaner, hipper style that's really tremendous! Titles include "The Blues", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Lulu's Back In Town", "The Carioca", "Sing For Your Supper", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". CD

✨✧ Junko Mine with Sleepy MatsumotoI Wish You Love ... CD
All Art/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really classic-styled vocal set from singer Junko Mine – one that also features superb tenor solos from the great Hidehiko Sleepy Matsumoto – who punctuates the music in all the right ways! The set's a 70s album, but done with the care and class of a Verve Records vocal session from back in the day – mixing Junko's vocals with some small combo backings and some larger arrangements – all wrapped around a set of American standards that take on a great new life here, thanks to Mine's unique phrasing. The set features a great bongo-driven version of "On A Clear Day" – plus "Where Or When", "Spring Is Here", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "I Wish You Love", All The Way", and "I've Got You Under My Skin".
