Louis ArmstrongLouis Armstrong & His Friends (First Editions Series – with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BMG, 1970. Used ... $6.99
Louis Armstrong hits the Flying Dutchman label – and unlocks a whole new spiritual side of his talents – a mode that's quite different than some of his crossover pop of the 60s! The style here has a bit of righteous elements in the lyrics, and lots of spiritual jazz in the backings – with full arrangements from Oliver Nelson – who heads up a dream lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor, and either Chico Hamilton or Pretty Purdie on drums! Even more amazing is a guest appearance from Leon Thomas – who sings on a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Other tunes are just as hip – and include "The Black Cat Has 9 Lives", "His Father Wore Long Hair", "Give Peace A Chance", and "We Shall Overcome". Must be heard to be believed! (Jazz, Vocalists) CD
(Out of print, digipak case has some wear and a cutout through the spine.)

Chet Baker, Helen Merrill, & OthersPassaporto Per L'Italia ... LP
RCA/Dialogo (Italy), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $35.99 36.99
A very cool album from the Italian branch of RCA Records – and a set that features a host of artists from other nations who briefly stopped over in Italy, and recorded some of these gems for the label! There's a core energy to the set, which balances contributions from a few key artists, mostly from America – and for jazz fans alone, the set is noteworthy for two tracks that have trumpeter Chet Baker blowing with orchestrations from a young Ennio Morricone – "So Che Ti Perdero" and "Il Mio Domani"! And there's plenty of other great bits too – singer Helen Merrill working with maestro Armando Trovajoli on "Nessuno Al Mondo" and "Estate" – plus Perez Prado on "Guaglione" and "Arrivederci Roma", Antonio Prieto on "Papa" and "Baciami", and even some very cool cuts from young poppers Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka. RCA, 1959. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Sublime work by a singer who should have dominated the 60s – had he not left this planet in an auto accident early in his short career! Jesse is wonderful here – getting even more coolness and class on RCA than he did in an indie setting – with help from the groups of Shorty Rogers and Dennis Farnon! Most numbers are standards, but done in a nicely soulful style – with titles that include "Witchcraft", "Guess Who", "Alright OK You Win", "Secret Love", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Now You Know", "Take Me Back To The Island", and "Funny". Diahann CarrollDiahann Caroll Sings Harold Arlen Songs ... CD
RCA/BMG (Spain), 1957. Used ... $4.99
Diahann Carroll gets some classy backings here – arrangements from Ralph Burns that really make these tunes come alive! Carroll's vocals are always great, but they seem to sparkle even more here than on other early albums – as Burns' backings feature unusual instrumentation and odd phrasing, which helps make the set way more than just another Harold Arlen songbook session. Sometimes the strings are dark and moody, and other nice bits include vibes and guitar – all helping to pull new energy out of tunes that include "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "A Sleeping Bee", "My Shining Hour", and "What's Good About Goodbye". Matt DennisDennis Anyone? ... LP
RCA, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Matt Dennis is best-known to most as the composer of the classic evergreen "Angel Eyes" – but he's also a pretty great singer and piano player, with an easy and hip style that's a lot like Bobby Troup. This album's one of the few he ever cut in this mode – and is a great small group session with backing from guitar, bass, and drums. Matt's the main star, though – and the set list is filled with great original compositions all handled beautifully. Titles include "Bless You Little Sleepyhead", "That's How Close I Want To Be To You", "Show Me The Way To Get Out Of This World", "Devil Talk", "Old Uncle Fud", "The Land Of Danger", and "Relax". A lost treasure from one of our favorite male jazz singers – the oft-overlooked Matt Dennis, known best as the composer of a few famous standards, but also a great vocalist in his own right – with a sad and torchy approach that's kind of unique! This album's got Matt singing and playing piano, with backing that icnludes guitar, trumpet, and a bit of flute – all in a moody mode that really fits the style of the album's selection of songs. Titles include "This Is My Story", "I'm Through With Love", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "Spring Is Here", "Heart Of Stone", and "For The Losers". LP, Vinyl record album

Salena JonesThis & That ... LP
RCA (Japan), 1974. Near Mint- ... $13.99
A fantastic record from singer Salena Jones – recorded in the UK with backings by Brit Easy maestro Johnny Cameron, and a sweet electric groove that really makes the album sparkle! The record's similar to some of Shirley Bassey's work with Johnny Harris – in that it features familiar tunes made slightly funky, grooving with a nice mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation, taking the singer to new territory without sounding hokey at all. Includes a nice breakbeat version of "I Love You", plus surprisingly great takes on "Summertime", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "You Forgot To Remember", and "All The Things You Are". A pretty weird one! Vicky Lane's always been one of the more dramatic singers from RCA's 50s gal catalog – and she's working here with LA jazzer Pete Condoli, who conducts a small jazz combo with lots of added percussion! The style's halfway between straight vocals and hi-fi type numbers with lots of added instrumental twists – and players on the set include Barney Kessel, Jimmy Rowles, Alvin Stoller, and Joe Mondragon, plus percussionists Milt Holland, Gene Estes, Larry Bunker, and Lou Singer. Tracks include "I Love You", "My Heart Stood Still", "My Romance", "Our Very Own", "The Trolley Song", "The Song Is You", and "Love Isn't Born". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Helen Merrill & Piero UmilianiParole E Musica ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A strange and obscure session that has the cool jazz vocals of American singer Helen Merrill backed by a small Italian combo led by soundtrack composer Piero Umiliani – a wonderful mix that really makes the album an unusual one for Helen! The music was originally recorded for a TV program in Italy, and each track is preceded by an Italian voice, reciting Italian versions of the lyrics over spare musical backing – then Merrill's voice comes in with a bigger jazz group, singing each track in English – a very nice level of presentation! And although the whole thing sounds crazy, it actually works well – and gives the album a compelling edge and kind of a sexy late-night quality – with great instrumentation that includes flute from Gino Marinacci and guitar from Enzo Grillini. Tracks include "Solitude", "Everything Happens To Me", "Night & Day", "Why Don't You Do Right", and "Willow Weep For Me". CD

RCA, 1960. Very Good+ ... $0.99 7.99
Della Reese gets a Latin twist – and result is one of her grooviest albums from the early days! Backings are arranged by OB Masingill, who does a good job of mixing RCA Latin modes with the soulful settings used on Della's straighter jazz records – balancing things out nicely so that the rhythms never overtake the vocals, leaving Reese right out front to direct the whole thing strongly! Della's got a bit more punch than usual in her singing – in a good way – and titles include "Let's Do It", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", "Why Don't You Do Right", "Love For Sale", and "Come On A My House". Dinah ShoreHolding Hands At Midnight (Japanese pressing) ... CD
RCA/BMG (Japan), 1955. Used ... $14.99
Lovely 50s work from Dinah Shore – just the kind of set that reminds us why she grabbed so much respect back in the day! The package has Dinah singing in a few different settings – some lush, some more stripped-down – and the cover lists no arranger for the tracks, so we're guessing that most of the material comes from RCA singles pulled together for this sweet little set. Shore's vocals have a really heartbreaking quality at times – deep feeling, and a lot less of the hoke that we remember from later years – although on the more upbeat numbers, she also manages to swing pretty well too! Titles include "Easy To Love", "Once In A While", "It Had To Be You", "You're Driving Me Crazy", "That Great Come & Get It Day", and "Yesterdays". CD

Nancy Sinatra & Lee HazlewoodNancy & Lee Again (with bonus tracks) ... LP
RCA/Light In The Attic, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $16.99 26.99
A rare second meeting between Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra – recorded for RCA a few years after their initial outing for Reprise, and done with a style that's even moodier than the first! Given that Nancy's less of a star at this point, Lee really dominates the album – and casts Sinatra in a space that's filled with his own dark themes of loneliness, pride, responsibility, and forbidden adult love. Backings are rich and large, but the voices are always upfront in the mix – and arrangers Larry Muhoberac and Clark Gassman really do a great job of getting the Hazlewood vision down perfectly. Most of the tracks are originals, and titles include "Got It Together", "Back On The Road", "Arkansas Coal Suite", "Congratulations", "Paris Summer", "Friendship Train", and "Tippy Toes". Also features two great bonus tracks – "Machine Gun Kelly" and "Think I'm Coming Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Leon ThomasSpirits Known & Unknown (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/RCA (France), 1969. Used ... $5.99
Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Thomas really rose to fame on Sanders' classic "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – and this set really takes off from that moment – letting Leon spin out some spiritual vibes of his own, and step into a few fresh new styles as well! The album's plenty righteous right from the start – partly because the lineup includes James Spaulding on alto and flute, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and the enigmatic "Little Rock" on tenor – who is actually Pharoah Sanders – but also because Leon serves up a shorter take on "The Creator Has a Master Plan" – done in a great style! The album also features a classic vocal take on Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", with lyrics that we totally love – plus the frenetic "Malcolm's Gone" – and the tracks "One", "Echoes", "Let The Rain Fall On Me", and "Damn Nam". CD include 3 versions of "Take The 'A' Train", 2 takes of "Walkin'", 2 takes of "Willow Weep For Me", and 2 takes of "If It Didn't Hurt So Much". CD

Lee WileyWest Of The Moon ... LP
RCA, 1956. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A great set of torchy ballads from Lee Wiley – a singer who virtually helped invent the genre on record with her classic sets for Columbia Records! This album's done a few years after those – and features backings by Ralph Burns, who brings a fair bit more sentimental moments to his work here than you might expect from some of his other more modern outings. The proceedings have a nice touch of jazz – thanks to players who include Urbie Green on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Moe Wechsler on piano – and although Lee's vocals have a slightly aging quality, that only serves to help the fragile emotions of the best numbers in the set. Titles include "You're A Sweetheart", "This Is New", "Who Can I Turn To Now?", "My Ideal", "Limehouse Blues", "I Left My Sugar Standing In The Rain", and "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now". The last album ever recorded by LA vocalist Jesse Belvin – a stupendous session that showed where he might have headed, if not for the tragic auto accident that took his voice from us far too soon! The album has Jesse moving from the smooth R&B of earlier albums into a more sophisticated style that's a bit like that of Nat King Cole, but which is done here with traces of Sam Cooke as well. Orchestrations are by Marty Paich, who's great at both the swinging and mellow tunes – and titles include "Imagination", "I'll Buy You A Star", "Let There Be Love", "Blues In The Night", "It's All Right With Me", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". ✨✧ Rosemary ClooneyClap Hands Here Comes Rosie ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderfully groovy album from Rosemary Clooney – done with arrangements from the great Bob Thompson, and some nice male harmony support in the backgrounds! The style's a bit like that used by Rosie on her album with The Hi-Los for Columbia, but there's a hipper, more finger-snapping sort of vibe going on here – that introduction of greater syncopation that showed up as the 60s vocal years approached, and which really allows Thompson a lot of room to make a bit of magic with his music! A few steps the wrong way, and the sound could be hokey – but Rosemary makes it all come off beautifully, thanks to a nice sense of jazz and swing – on titles that include "You Got", "Give Me The Simple Life", "Something's Gotta Give", "Hooray For Love", "Mean To Me", "It Could Happen To You", and "Too Marvelous For Words". The title definitely gets it right on this one – as the set's about as perfect a collection of Eartha Kitt's work as you could ever hope to find – a surprisingly huge batch of music that not only includes familiar hits and holiday classics, but also some unusual rare bits as well! At 22 tracks, the package is hardly an accidental collection of Kitt's music for RCA – and instead, it's really well-chosen, and thoughtfully put together – with remastering from the first generation session masters, and some liner notes that offer great insight to Eartha's music. Flo BennettHalf Past Lonely (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Gift/SSJ (Japan), 1962. Used ... $23.99
An obscure set, but a great one too – the only full album ever recorded by Flo Bennett, a singer who started in Denver, moved to LA, and managed to cut this sweetly jazzy session with help from arranger Ernie Freeman! The album's on the tiny Gift label, but it's got the care and poise of bigger-label sets from the time – particularly some of the late 50s girl singer sessions on RCA, especially those with a more jazz-based feel. The group's a small combo – with Plas Johnson on tenor, John Anderson on trumpet, and Irving Ashby on guitar – and the tunes themselves are mostly pretty fresh, and include some lesser-known mid-century numbers amidst more familiar standards. Flo's vocal style is nicely raspy at points – almost world-weary, despite a relatively young age – and songs include "Lonely Winter", "If You Were Me", "What To Do", "Half Past Lonely", "Saturday Night", "Out Of Town", "Laugh At Me", and "Never Been So Lost". Lena HorneLena Like Latin ... LP
CRC, 1961. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A set that features lots of great arrangements from Shorty Rogers – upbeat and jazzy, in ways that aren't exactly the Latin modes promised by the title, but still pretty darn great! Rogers his hitting nicely here on all burners – that leaner 60s approach he used in some of his own great records of the time, with rhythms that borrow a bit from bossa and Latin jazz, but turn their elements towards a west coast sort of groove in the end. Lennie Hayton conducts the orchestra, but he's definitely moving in a Rogers-directed mode – much more so than on earlier dates with Lena for RCA. Titles include "Meditation", "More", "Old Devil Moon", "My Blue Heaven", "Cuckoo In The Clock", "From This Moment On", and "Take Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Teddi KingAll The King's Songs ... LP
Coral, 1959. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The title tells the story of the album's concept – as Teddi King pays tribute to a dozen male "kings" of music – including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dick Haymes, and Billy Eckstine! The tunes are all signature numbers by each of the male stars – redone by Teddi here with a female twist, and set to backings by Lew Douglas and Johnny Richards – both of whom give Teddi some of the best support of her 50s career. Richards' backings are especially great – nicely dynamic, in a way that breaks past some of Teddi's sleepier qualities – and even on the mellower numbers, the King vocals are in full force, sung with even more promise than on previous albums for RCA. Titles include "Flamingo", "Unforgettable", "April Showers", "A Cottage For Sale", "This Love Of Mine", "Keeping Out Of Mischief Now", and "Temptation". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that's sometimes overlooked in the career of the legendary Eartha Kitt – a set that came out on MGM in the early 60s, after Kitt's initial rise to fame on RCA, and before taking off for a long stretch overseas! Eartha KittBad But Beautiful (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MGM/Verve, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
A record that's sometimes overlooked in the career of the legendary Eartha Kitt – a set that came out on MGM in the early 60s, after Kitt's initial rise to fame on RCA, and before taking off for a long stretch overseas! The set hints at the sound of that era a bit – and arrangements by Billy May and Bill Loose have this gently sophisticated style that fits the growing sophistication in Kitt's phrasing as she really develops her style. Songs follow the themes of her famous work – and titles include "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", "Good Little Girls", "Never On Sunday", "Always True To You In My Fashion", "La Dolce Vita", "All I Want Is All There Is & Then Some", and "It's So Nice To Have A Man Around The House". LP, Vinyl record album

Audrey MorrisAfterthoughts ... LP
Fancy Faire, 1985. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A later date from Audrey Morris – the Chicago singer who's probably best remembered for some classic RCA sessions in the 50s, but who also kept on doing her own thing for decades later in the Windy City! The set's got a very old school feel – quite different than the usual 80s jazz set – very much in classic small combo vocal mode, with Audrey's lead accompanied by piano from Bruce Robins, and some occasional tenor from Stu Genovese. And although the set was issued on a small label, it's got a very professional approach – almost an attempt to go for the classic sound that bigger labels were doing with small singer sessions a few decades before. The song choices are great, and titles include "Nobody", "I'm A Dreamer Aren't We All", "My Silent Love", "Mira", "Rain Sometimes", "But I Loved You", and "Afterthoughts". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and is bent at the bottom left corner.)

Gale RobbinsI'm A Dreamer (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Vik/BMG (Japan), 1958. Used ... $11.99 14.99
All girl singers should be this lucky! Gale Robbins is a pretty nice vocalist, although nothing fancy – but on this set, she's lucky enough to have some great backings from Eddie Cano – whose orchestra picks up the pace with plenty of musical flourishes, and the occasional light Latin touches! The tunes are sung by Gale in a style that's a bit torchy and a bit boozy – as much from the chest as from the heart, if you know what we mean – and Cano's backings really make the set a late 50s standout from RCA. Titles include "Best Of All", "Golden Earrings", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Here I Go". CD
(2008 Japanese pressing – includes obi!)
