Two great
Cannonball Adderley sessions! The first set features the sweet vocals of
Nancy with the classic
Cannonball quintet for a great set of soul jazz tunes that was one of Capitol's biggest selling jazz sides in the 60s! About half the cuts feature
Nancy on vocals – on tunes like "Save Your Love For Me", "Never Will I Marry", "Happy Talk", and "The Masquerade Is Over" – and the other half feature Cannon's group playing instrumentally – on cuts like "Teaneck", "One Man's Dream", and "Never Say Yes". Pop, but hip – nice and hip! Back Door Blues is an incredible album – originally issued under Eddie Cleanhead Vinson's name – but who moves way past his usual bag thanks to the hip backing of
Cannonball Adderley! The group here includes
Cannonball – plus Nat, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes – and there's one track in particular that's amazing – "Arriving Soon", an instrumental that has Vinson soaring on alto, wailing with an almost Coltrane-esque level of freedom. It's a killer modal track, and is worth the price of the album alone. There's another instrumental called "Vinsonology", plus vocal numbers like "Hold It", "This Time", and "Kidney Stew" – all with a nice groovy
Adderley quintet kind of groove.
