✨✧ Terry CallierI Just Can't Help Myself ... CD
Cadet/MCA (UK), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums that Terry Callier ever recorded – and a masterpiece of the baroque soul crossover style that was going down at the Chess/Cadet label at the time! Terry's own folksy singing and playing would be more than enough to make this record great – but it's given an amazing edge by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney, who create these floating pillows of sound and washes of jazzy colors that fit Terry's moods perfectly, and really expand the emotional intensity of the songs. At the time of this release, the Chess empire was falling apart – but the forces that be put a great last push into the record, and Terry's backed by superb work from Chicago studio giants like Phil Upchurch, Don Myrick, Art Hoyle, Bobby Christian, Cleveland Eaton, Louis Satterfield, and Evans and Stepney themselves! Every track is a wonder, and titles include "Alley-Wind Song" , "Can't Catch the Trane", "Bowlin' Green", and "Until Tomorrow". (Soul, Vocalists) CD

✨✧ Marta KubisovaNe – The Soul Of Marta Kubisova ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn soulful work from Marta Kubisova – a late 60s singer from Czechoslovakia who was so groovy, she was banned by the Communist Party! This excellent set brings together rare tracks by Marta from the prime early years of her career – all numbers that feature very Western soul-styled backings, with plenty of funk in the mix too – and some of the odder, more offbeat arrangements you might get in the music of singers like Doris or France Gall! There's an undercurrent of pop-psyche too – which would make this package just right for the Finders Keepers camp – and our hat's off to the Vampi Soul empire for doing such a great job with this wonderful material. 25 tracks in all – with titles that include "Tajga Blues 69", "Hare Krisna", "Chci Pravo Trubky Mit", "Bily Stul", "Svlikam Lasku", "Tak Dej Se K Nam A Projdem Svet", "Ne", "Jakoby Nic", "Nepis Dal", "Ten Zlej Pav", "Modrej Vres", and "Cervencove Rano".
