Pablo, 1981. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A late session from Ella – but a nice one! Zoot Sims blows a few solos, Toots Thielemans plays harmonica – and titles include "Dreamer", "Dindi", "Somewhere In The Hills", "Girl From Ipanema", "Water To Drink", "Song Of The Jet", "Wave", "Useless Landscape", and "Bonita". 2LPs – with lots of tracks! Ella FitzgeraldElla In Berlin – Mack The Knife ... LP
Verve, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Quite a popular live album from Ella – recorded in Berlin at the height of the cold war years – featuring a famous recording of "Mack The Knife" that almost blew away Bobby Darin's hit with the cut! The album's nicely free of some of the stodginess of some of Ella's Songbook albums from the same time – with light and jazzy backing by a group that includes Jim Hall, Paul Smith, Wilfred Middlebrooks, and Gus Johnson. Titles include "Mack The Knife", "How High The Moon", "Too Darn Hot", "Gone With The Wind", "Misty", and "Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla Wishes You A Swinging Christmas ... LP
Verve, 1960. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years – a date that was maybe done as a seasonal one-off for singer Ella Fitzgerald, but one that's gone on to become one of her best-selling records of all time! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – upbeat and swinging, very much as promised in the title – with a quality that makes the tunes move, and avoids some of the too-blue and more melancholy modes that can sometimes get in the way of making a Christmas jazz vocal album work this well! Fitzgerald has great arrangements here – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia – on a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! (Holiday Music, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Verve Records Inc pressing with deep groove. Includes Verve inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole, mild corner bump, light surface wear, ink stamp on the back.)

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongElla & Louis ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good- ... $7.99
A legendary pairing of two classic postwar singers – each of whom were really finding their own sort of sound in the 50s, then found a way to make some real magic together on a record like this! Louis Armstrong was very much senior to the younger Ella Fitzgerald – but both had become such beautifully expressive singers, their voices here really ignite a special sort of energy that maybe even elevates the record past some of their solo sets of the time. Backings are in a nice small combo mode – with Armstrong on both trumpet and vocals – and Ella and Louis carry most of the set with their great vocal interplay – warm, personal, and pretty darn charming – in a mode that should be hokey, but comes across great, thanks to the quality of both vocalists! Titles include "April In Paris", "Can't We Be Friends", "Isn't This A Lovely Day", "Under A Blanket Of Blue", and "A Foggy Day". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s EU reissue in a barcode cover, with a small peeled spot in back.)

Ella Fitzgerald/Tommy Flanagan TrioMontreux 77 (80s pressing) ... LP
Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Ella Fitzgerald swings it nicely with the Tommy Flanagan Trio – a small group on the date for backup, but one who give this Montreux performance almost as much bounce as Ella's 70s live dates with a bigger ensemble! Tommy seems to have a bit more punch in his piano than usual, and Fitzgerald really makes great use of that quality – hanging her groove on his bold lines nicely, with support from Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Day By Day", "Billie's Bounce", "Too Close For Comfort", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "One Note Samba", and "Ordinary Fool". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 80s OJC pressing.)

Sarah VaughanTime In My Life ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $1.99
Sarah Vaughn's looking pretty groovy on the cover of this album, and she's sounding pretty groovy too – thanks to some sweet 70s backings from Ernie Wilkins! The style isn't exactly funky, but it's got some fully soulful sounds, and some great electric moments too – modes that almost feel more like some of the best Kudu Records vocal sets from the time, instead of the usual Mainstream Records groove. Sarah really fits well in this sort of setting – stretching out into groovier territory than before with the same sense of change that Ella Fitzgerald or Marlena Shaw were bringing to their music at the time. Players include Jerome Richardson on saxes, Buddy Childers on trumpet, Benny Powell on trombone, Jimmy Cobb on percussion, and Earl Palmer on drums – and titles include "Inner City Blues", "Magical Connection", "Universal Prisoner", "Tomorrow City", "That's The Way I've Always Heard It", "Imagine", "On Thinking It Over", and "If Not For You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tri-color label pressing, in a unipak cover, with light wear.)

Cootie Williams & Wini BrownAround Midnight With Cootie Williams & Wini Brown ... LP
Jaro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $9.99 11.99
A cool session from Cootie Williams – working here as a vocalist as much as a trumpeter, often in the company of female singer Wini Brown! The set has both singers working together on some hip duets, then stepping apart and working on their own for some tracks too – an approach that's a bit like the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald recordings over at Verve, but handled here with a bit more swing overall! Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, who knows how to make the record move nicely – and who also keeps things away from any too-hokey territory – and titles include "Around Midnight", "Bewitched", "That Old Feeling", "Goin Around", "Lover", and "Gone Again". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono promo pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small split on the top seam, but looks great overall.)
