✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla – The Lost Berlin Tapes ... CD
Verve, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ella Fitzgerald recorded one of her most successful albums in Berlin – a smoking live set that gave the world her take on "Mack The Knife" – and this set marks a fantastic second chapter to that record – unreleased tapes that appear here for the first time ever! The concert's from a different year than the previous record, but done in a very similar mode – Ella in front of a very enthusiastic concert crowd, running through upbeat, swinging takes on a variety of classics – all at a moment when both her vocal skills and onstage personality were at an all-time high! The group is just a trio – Paul Smith on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – but they swing things as hard as an orchestra, and merge with the vocals in a really wonderful way. Titles include a great version of "My Kind Of Boy" – with Ella switching around a lot of the lyrics – plus "C'Est Magnifique", "Good Morning Heartache", "Hallelujah I Love Him So", "Summertime", "Mr Paganini", "Mack The Knife", "Angel Eyes", "Cheek To Cheek", "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", "Taking A Chance On Me", and "Jersey Bounce". Ella FitzgeraldNewport Jazz Festival – Live At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Columbia, 1973. Used 2CD ... $6.99
A great set from Ella Fitzgerald – recorded at Carnegie Hall during a stretch when Fitzgerald was hitting new worldwide fame, and singing a lot of groovy contemporary tunes – but done here in a very old school style that hearkens back to Ella's earliest days in the jazz world! The orchestra here is that of Chick Webb, directed by Eddie Barefield – who brings a vintage swing to the music that's mighty nice, and free from some of the more modern modes of some of Fitzgerald's studio work of the time. The live setting allows for Ella to open up nicely on some tunes – especially some of the medley numbers, which may well be some of the most entertaining on the record. Ella sings with some backing from Ellis Larkins on piano on a few numbers – and a few other tracks are instrumental, with work by Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, and Al Grey on trombone. Titles include "Stardust", "Some Of These Days", "I've Gotta Be Me", "C Jam Blues", "Smooth Sailing", "Indian Summer", and "Lemon Drop". CD

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldWishes You A Swingin' Christmas ... CD
Verve, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years – a date that was maybe done as a seasonal one-off for singer Ella Fitzgerald, but one that's gone on to become one of her best-selling records of all time! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – upbeat and swinging, very much as promised in the title – with a quality that makes the tunes move, and avoids some of the too-blue and more melancholy modes that can sometimes get in the way of making a Christmas jazz vocal album work this well! Fitzgerald has great arrangements here – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia – on a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! Ella Fitzgerald & Jazz At The PhilharmonicJazz At The Philharmonic – The Ella Fitzgerald Set ... CD
Verve, 1949/1954. Used ... $8.99
Ella Fitzgerald at the height of her powers – heard here on a set of Jazz At The Philharmonic recordings that feature the singer really stretching out in a small group setting! The tracks are all live, and not only feature Fitzgerald charming the crowd with her presence, but also effortlessly hitting the kind of perfect phrasing and timing she always does so well in the studio – maybe even more striking here, given the occasional unbridled energy of the audience. Players include Hank Jones on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich or JC Heard on drums – and the recordings also feature some contributions from Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto, and Lester Young and Flip Phillips on tenor. Tracks come from 1949, 1953, and 1954 JATP performances – and titles include "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Hernando's Hideaway", "Later", "Perdido", "Somebody Loves Me", "Robbin's Nest", "A New Shade Of Blues", "Old Mother Hubbard", "Flying Home", "Oh Lady Be Good", "How High The Moon", "Why Don't You Do Right", and "Bill". Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassSophisticated Lady ... CD
Pablo, 1975/1983. Used ... $4.99
Live duets between Ella Fitzgerald and guitarist Joe Pass – done in the same stripped-down style as their studio albums for Pablo! The pairing of talents is quite unique – and makes for some of the most compelling Fitzgerald material you'll hear from the time – really open, free tracks that have Ella pushing things even more than usual – an incredible demonstration of her rich talents, which were sometimes lost amidst more conventional record dates. Pass has a clear, clean tone that's mighty nice – and the record brings together material recorded in Tokyo and Hamburg, with titles that include "One Note Samba", "Bluesette", "Old Folks", "Wave", "Mood Indigo", "Take Love Easy", "Satin Doll", and "Gone With The Wind". Classic duets between Ella & Louis – done in a sweet mode that only could have been handled by Verve in the 50s! Backings are in a nice small combo mode, and Ella and Louis carry most of the set with their great vocal interplay – warm, personal, and pretty darn charming – in a mode that should be hokey, but comes across great! Titles include "April In Paris", "Can't We Be Friends", "Isn't This A Lovely Day", "Under A Blanket Of Blue", and "A Foggy Day". CD

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongPorgy & Bess ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". Ella Fitzgerald with The Roy Eldridge SextetLive In Stockholm 1957 ... CD
Verve/Lonehill (Spain), 1957. Used ... $9.99
A really great document of the live power of the Verve enterprise at its best – heard here in an extended concert performance from Stockholm in 1957, featuring Roy Eldridge and Stuff Smith with the Oscar Peterson Trio – plus a full second set of vocal tracks by Ella Fitzgerald! Eldridge himself sings a bit on the first half of the set – in that warmly raspy way that's always a great companion to his work on trumpet – and Smith gets center stage on a few of the instrumentals, really going to town in a way that doesn't always happen on record. Ella herself is a bit more unfettered than usual too, singing in a mode that recalls her classic performance on the Live In Berlin record – egged on by a very appreciative audience here! Norman Granz introduces various segments of the performance, and Eldridge/Smith numbers include "School Days", "Lester Leaps In", "Bugle Call Rag", and "Undecided" – and Fitzgerald numbers include "Love For Sale", "It Don't Mean A Thing", "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Tenderly", and "April In Paris". Rita ReysToday – Recorded In London ... CD
Philips (Japan), 1969. Used ... $24.99
An incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". CD
