Quite a popular live album from Ella – recorded in Berlin at the height of the cold war years – featuring a famous recording of "Mack The Knife" that almost blew away Bobby Darin's hit with the cut! ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldComplete Piano Duets ... CD
Verve, 1950s/1976. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful way to hear the genius of Ella Fitzgerald at its best – as the set features all tracks that just have the first lady of jazz singing alongside a piano – spare, open, and in a way that really lets you get all all the care and nuance that Ella can bring to a tune! Most of the recordings here are from the 50s – quite unusual for the time – and they're matched with one more set of duets that Ella Recorded for Pablo Records in the 70s, at a time when she was exploring more intimate modes in a really great way. There's a host of great surprises along the way – and the set begins with 8 tracks from the album Ella Sings Gershwin, with Ellis Larkins on piano – then moves to another Decca duet with Larkins on the album Songs In A Mellow Mood. The set follows with two spare numbers from the Songbook recordings for Verve – one with Oscar Peterson on piano, one with Paul Smith. Then, Smith returns on another set of 13 tracks taken from the rare Let No Man Write My Epitaph album for Verve – then adds in a spare duet with Tommy Flanagan from the 1964 A Juan Les Pins album – before ending with the full set list from the wonderful Ella & Oscar album from 1976 – 7 more duets with Oscar Peterson on piano. ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla Wishes You A Swinging Christmas (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1960. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years – a date that was maybe done as a seasonal one-off for singer Ella Fitzgerald, but one that's gone on to become one of her best-selling records of all time! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – upbeat and swinging, very much as promised in the title – with a quality that makes the tunes move, and avoids some of the too-blue and more melancholy modes that can sometimes get in the way of making a Christmas jazz vocal album work this well! Fitzgerald has great arrangements here – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia – on a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! Plus, the CD features a few tasty alternates – and the album also includes great packaging, and the groovy tune "Christmas Island"! (Holiday Music, Vocalists) CD

Ella FitzgeraldNewport Jazz Festival – Live At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Columbia, 1973. Used 2CD ... $6.99
A great set from Ella Fitzgerald – recorded at Carnegie Hall during a stretch when Fitzgerald was hitting new worldwide fame, and singing a lot of groovy contemporary tunes – but done here in a very old school style that hearkens back to Ella's earliest days in the jazz world! The orchestra here is that of Chick Webb, directed by Eddie Barefield – who brings a vintage swing to the music that's mighty nice, and free from some of the more modern modes of some of Fitzgerald's studio work of the time. The live setting allows for Ella to open up nicely on some tunes – especially some of the medley numbers, which may well be some of the most entertaining on the record. Ella sings with some backing from Ellis Larkins on piano on a few numbers – and a few other tracks are instrumental, with work by Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, and Al Grey on trombone. Titles include "Stardust", "Some Of These Days", "I've Gotta Be Me", "C Jam Blues", "Smooth Sailing", "Indian Summer", and "Lemon Drop". CD

Ella Fitzgerald & Jazz At The PhilharmonicJazz At The Philharmonic – The Ella Fitzgerald Set ... CD
Verve, 1949/1954. Used ... $8.99
Ella Fitzgerald at the height of her powers – heard here on a set of Jazz At The Philharmonic recordings that feature the singer really stretching out in a small group setting! The tracks are all live, and not only feature Fitzgerald charming the crowd with her presence, but also effortlessly hitting the kind of perfect phrasing and timing she always does so well in the studio – maybe even more striking here, given the occasional unbridled energy of the audience. Players include Hank Jones on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich or JC Heard on drums – and the recordings also feature some contributions from Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto, and Lester Young and Flip Phillips on tenor. Tracks come from 1949, 1953, and 1954 JATP performances – and titles include "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Hernando's Hideaway", "Later", "Perdido", "Somebody Loves Me", "Robbin's Nest", "A New Shade Of Blues", "Old Mother Hubbard", "Flying Home", "Oh Lady Be Good", "How High The Moon", "Why Don't You Do Right", and "Bill". Pablo, 1975/1983. Used ... $4.99
Live duets between Ella Fitzgerald and guitarist Joe Pass – done in the same stripped-down style as their studio albums for Pablo! The pairing of talents is quite unique – and makes for some of the most compelling Fitzgerald material you'll hear from the time – really open, free tracks that have Ella pushing things even more than usual – an incredible demonstration of her rich talents, which were sometimes lost amidst more conventional record dates. Pass has a clear, clean tone that's mighty nice – and the record brings together material recorded in Tokyo and Hamburg, with titles that include "One Note Samba", "Bluesette", "Old Folks", "Wave", "Mood Indigo", "Take Love Easy", "Satin Doll", and "Gone With The Wind". Classic duets between Ella & Louis – done in a sweet mode that only could have been handled by Verve in the 50s! Backings are in a nice small combo mode, and Ella and Louis carry most of the set with their great vocal interplay – warm, personal, and pretty darn charming – in a mode that should be hokey, but comes across great! ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongPorgy & Bess ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". A beautiful late duo set from Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass – who'd worked together on a number of terrific sets in the 70s & 80s – always with an excellent, intuitive communication – which culminated in the lovely Easy Living in the early 80s! Here they work with material largely culled from the Broadway and film music canons – some of quite well known if not acknowledged standards, and others that are are little more obscure. A real late charmer from Ella & Joe! Includes "My Ship", "Don't Be That Way", "My Man", "Don't Worry 'Bout Me", "Easy Living", "Days Of WineAnd Roses", "I Want A Little Girl", "I'm Making Believe", "On A Slow Boat To China", "Love For Sale" and more. Ella Fitzgerald with The Roy Eldridge SextetLive In Stockholm 1957 ... CD
Verve/Lonehill (Spain), 1957. Used ... $9.99
A really great document of the live power of the Verve enterprise at its best – heard here in an extended concert performance from Stockholm in 1957, featuring Roy Eldridge and Stuff Smith with the Oscar Peterson Trio – plus a full second set of vocal tracks by Ella Fitzgerald! Eldridge himself sings a bit on the first half of the set – in that warmly raspy way that's always a great companion to his work on trumpet – and Smith gets center stage on a few of the instrumentals, really going to town in a way that doesn't always happen on record. Ella herself is a bit more unfettered than usual too, singing in a mode that recalls her classic performance on the Live In Berlin record – egged on by a very appreciative audience here! Norman Granz introduces various segments of the performance, and Eldridge/Smith numbers include "School Days", "Lester Leaps In", "Bugle Call Rag", and "Undecided" – and Fitzgerald numbers include "Love For Sale", "It Don't Mean A Thing", "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Tenderly", and "April In Paris". Fremeaux & Associates (France), Mid 50s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A big set of work from the lovely Blossom Dearie – one of the most unique singers in jazz, and a great pianist too! Blossom first rose to fame on the scene in Paris, but quickly returned home to the US – where she cut some beautiful albums for Verve in the 50s – sprightly vocal sides that were very different than some of the torchy modes of the previous generation, and even different than other 50s work by singers like Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan! The charms of Blossom are impossible to describe in words, but they'll grab you right away upon first listen – and you'll get plenty of listening here – as the 3CD set begins with material from her Paris years, including the album Miss Blossom Dearie Et Sa Musique Jazz Sweet, the EP Blossom Dearie Piano, and then moves onto verve albums that include Blossom Dearie, Give Him The Ooh La La, Once Upon A Summertime, My Gentleman Friend, and Sings Comden & Green. 71 tracks in all – with notes in French and English! Blue Note, 2021. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
A really special sort of collection – one that features a fair bit of new material mixed in with some of the key cuts from the Blue Note years of singer Gregory Porter – an artist who started in jazz, but who's clearly had a huge impact on the world of soul music in recent years too! Porter's got a hell of a voice, and a majestic way of presenting his music – as you'll hear on the wide variety of work included here! The first half of the record features four new tracks, a few new arrangements and covers, and some older Blue Note material – titles that include "Dry Bones", "Illusion", "Real Good Hands", "Love Runs Deeper", "It's Probably Me", "No Love Dying", "1960 What", "Concorde", "If Love Is Overrated", "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad", and "Bad Girl Love". CD2 features duets – some freshly recorded, others that use studio work to add Porter's voice to now-passed singers – a lineup that includes songs with Jamie Cullum, Ella Fitzgerald, Moby, Julie London, Lalah Hathaway, Lizz Wright, Nat King Cole, Lisa Fischer, Dianne Reeves, and Renee Fleming. Rita ReysToday – Recorded In London ... CD
Philips (Japan), 1969. Used ... $19.99
An incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". CD
