✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldDream Dancing ... LP
Pablo, 1972/1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ella swings a set of tunes by Cole Porter – her first tribute to the songwriter since a Verve songbook session of the 50s – but done with some very classic-styled backings from Nelson Riddle! Both Riddle and Ella had come up with some nice groovy elements in their music by the time of this early 70s session – and the album really benefits from those changes – picking up some of the slight bounce and undercurrents of grooviness that Fitzgerald showed on late 60s records for MPS and Reprise, which makes for some really fresh moments on these Porter tunes! The set's hardly a simple rehash of standard modes – and is more a groovy Riddle/Fitzgerald swinger overall – on tunes that include "Down In The Depths", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Anything Goes", "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", "At Long Last Love", and "C'Est Magnifique". ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla – The Lost Berlin Tapes ... CD
Verve, 1962. Used ... $9.99
Ella Fitzgerald recorded one of her most successful albums in Berlin – a smoking live set that gave the world her take on "Mack The Knife" – and this set marks a fantastic second chapter to that record – unreleased tapes that appear here for the first time ever! The concert's from a different year than the previous record, but done in a very similar mode – Ella in front of a very enthusiastic concert crowd, running through upbeat, swinging takes on a variety of classics – all at a moment when both her vocal skills and onstage personality were at an all-time high! The group is just a trio – Paul Smith on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – but they swing things as hard as an orchestra, and merge with the vocals in a really wonderful way. Titles include a great version of "My Kind Of Boy" – with Ella switching around a lot of the lyrics – plus "C'Est Magnifique", "Good Morning Heartache", "Hallelujah I Love Him So", "Summertime", "Mr Paganini", "Mack The Knife", "Angel Eyes", "Cheek To Cheek", "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", "Taking A Chance On Me", and "Jersey Bounce". ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla At Duke's Place ... LP
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the structure of the set, and Ella handling vocals. The tunes are mostly Ellington classics, but they provide a nice change of pace for the Fitzgerald of the 60s – taking Ella into more sophisticated territory on some darker themes that really surprised us. Players are all of the Ellington stalwarts of the time – and titles include "Imagine My Frustration", "Duke's Place", "What Am I Here For", "Azure", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Passion Flower", and "Something To Live For". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono MGM pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout hole, light wear and aging, a small stain at the bottom seam, light stain at the spine, and an X imprint in back.)

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla Sings Broadway ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Ella Fitzgerald sings Broadway – but in a way that makes the tunes completely her own! Marty Paich turns in some great jazzy arrangements for the set – and the tunes are far more swinging than the usual showtunes you might expect – stripped of all their stage-bound drama, and retooled by Paich as these tight little vehicles for Ella's amazing vocals! The album's arguably more expressive than even some of Fitzgerald's previous songbook sessions – even though most work comes from the same American stage mode – titles that include "Hernando's Hideaway", "I Could Have Danced All Night", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Guys and Dolls", "If I Were A Bell", "No Other Love", and "Steam Heat". A definite shot at the pop market by Ella Fitzgerald – quite possibly recorded as a follow-up to the 60s success of former singing partner Louis Armstrong, who's referenced nicely in Ella's rendition of the title hit! The first 4 tracks on the set were done in the UK, under the leadership of arranger Johnny Spence – and the remaining 8 were done back on Ella's home turf, with familiar backings by Frank DeVol, and an overall sound that's a bit more lush than those on the British numbers. Includes a hit reading of "Can't Buy Me Love", plus "Hello Dolly", "The Sweetest Sounds", "My Man", "Volare", "The Thrill Is Gone", "How High The Moon", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". CD

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldNice Work If You Can Get It – Ella Fitzgerald & Andrew Previn Do Gershwin (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Pablo (Japan), 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
Don't be put off by the Al Hirschfeld image on the front of this one – because the record's a nicely laidback effort that gets way past the show biz cover! The sound here is extremely spare – and Ella's singing with only the piano of Andre Previn for accompaniment – possibly the first time she ever worked this way, in a manner that has all the intimacy of a late nite, small club performance. The tunes are all Gershwin numbers, but presented in ways that differ greatly from Ella's Verve Songbook reading of them a few decades before – and titles include "A Foggy Day", "Nice Work If You Can Get", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off", and "But Not For Me". Ella Fitzgerald & Duke EllingtonElla & Duke At The Cote D'Azur ... CD
Verve, 1966. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
A superstar performance from the Antibes jazz festival at Cote D'Azur – one that features Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington sharing the stage, in a concert that was also recorded for a film! Most numbers here feature the full Ellington orchestra backing Ella up – but a few other numbers feature just backings from a trio with Jimmy Jones on piano and Grady Tate on drums. Duke and Ella trade the spotlight nicely – and Fitzgerald only sings on about half of the set, numbers that include "Mack The Knife", "The More I See You", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Jazz Samba", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "Going Out Of My Head". Ellington's heard on other instrumental performances – some of which are a bit more upbeat and unbridled than usual – almost in a Basie mode. These tunes include "Trombonio Bustosolssimo", "Diminuendo In Blue & Blow By Blow", "The Old Circus Train Turn Around Blues", and "The Matador". CD

Ella Fitzgerald & Jazz At The PhilharmonicJazz At The Philharmonic – The Ella Fitzgerald Set ... CD
Verve, 1949/1954. Used ... $6.99
Ella Fitzgerald at the height of her powers – heard here on a set of Jazz At The Philharmonic recordings that feature the singer really stretching out in a small group setting! The tracks are all live, and not only feature Fitzgerald charming the crowd with her presence, but also effortlessly hitting the kind of perfect phrasing and timing she always does so well in the studio – maybe even more striking here, given the occasional unbridled energy of the audience. Players include Hank Jones on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich or JC Heard on drums – and the recordings also feature some contributions from Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto, and Lester Young and Flip Phillips on tenor. Tracks come from 1949, 1953, and 1954 JATP performances – and titles include "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Hernando's Hideaway", "Later", "Perdido", "Somebody Loves Me", "Robbin's Nest", "A New Shade Of Blues", "Old Mother Hubbard", "Flying Home", "Oh Lady Be Good", "How High The Moon", "Why Don't You Do Right", and "Bill". Pablo, 1976. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass return to the studio just a few years after their initial meeting – once again to work in a stripped-down duet format that's completely sublime! The spare setting is one that Ella never got in the older days – and there's an intimacy here that almost makes it like we're hearing a new singer entirely – one who's not surging over bigger band arrangements, but laying back and singing in a mode that's almost more torchy than we could have ever expected. Pass' guitar is acoustic, and gentle – and titles include "All Too Soon", "One Note Samba", "Rain", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "That Old Feeling", "I've Got The World On A String", and "Nature Boy". Pablo, 1973. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways that are completely sublime, and a very nice change from some of Ella's fuller band recordings of the few years before this album. And far from being sleepy, the intimacy of the record almost seems to set a new kind of fire – one that comes from the gentle persona of Ella, which is a far cry from the glass-breaking singer that she'd come to be known as in the mainstream! Titles include "Take Love Easy", "Once I Loved", "Lush Life", "You're Blase", "A Foggy Day", "I Want To Talk About You", and "You Go To My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". Dee Dee BridgewaterDear Ella ... CD
Verve, 1997. Used ... $3.99
A surprising sort of set, one in which Dee Dee Bridgewater pays tribute to Ella Fitzgerald – a link we might never have expected in her style! Dee Dee's not totally copping Ella here, though – although she does sing a good number of tunes from the Fitzgerald songbook – and as usual for Bridgewater, there's a pretty unique flavor to most of the material, something that comes through strongly with help from arrangers Lou Levy, Slide Hampton, and Cecil Bridgewater! The band's upbeat and groovy on most numbers – and titles include the Kenny Burrell-penned "Dear Ella", done as a duet, plus "How High The Moon", "Mack The Knife", "A Tisket A Tasket", "Midnight Sun", "Undecided", "Oh Lady Be Good", and "If You Can't Sing It You'll Have To Swing It (aka Mr Paganini)". ✨✧ Blossom DearieLittle Jazz Bird 1952 to 1959 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Mid 50s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A big set of work from the lovely Blossom Dearie – one of the most unique singers in jazz, and a great pianist too! Blossom first rose to fame on the scene in Paris, but quickly returned home to the US – where she cut some beautiful albums for Verve in the 50s – sprightly vocal sides that were very different than some of the torchy modes of the previous generation, and even different than other 50s work by singers like Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan! The charms of Blossom are impossible to describe in words, but they'll grab you right away upon first listen – and you'll get plenty of listening here – as the 3CD set begins with material from her Paris years, including the album Miss Blossom Dearie Et Sa Musique Jazz Sweet, the EP Blossom Dearie Piano, and then moves onto verve albums that include Blossom Dearie, Give Him The Ooh La La, Once Upon A Summertime, My Gentleman Friend, and Sings Comden & Green. 71 tracks in all – with notes in French and English! ✨✧ Ella FitzgearldSongs In A Mellow Mood ... LP
Decca, 1954. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful lost gem from Ella Fitzgerald – very much in the mellow mood hinted at in the title, with only the piano of Ellis Larkins to back her up! The sound is incredible – and even very different than any of the work she recorded at Verve – with a moody, evocative quality that seems to offer up a whole different side of Ella than we'd ever known. Larkins is always perfect in such a setting – able to be richly emotive on the keys without interfering with the singer at all – and honestly, we're stunned to hear how much Ella makes with the empty space left on the set, and wish we'd had more of a chance to hear her in this format. Titles include "Please Be Kind", "I'm Glad There Is You", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Imagination", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lurlean HunterBlue & Sentimental ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Probably the best-ever album by this obscure bluesy singer from Chicago! Jimmy Giuffre handled the arrangements, and the record has a bit more polish than some of her other albums. The tracks feature some very nice jazzy arrangements – with Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Jones on piano, and Harry Edison on trumpet. Lurlean's voice is deep and rich, with a sound that's a mix of Ella Fitzgerald and some of the icier singers, like Chris Connor or June Christy. Tracks include "Blue Turning Grey Over You", "Just Imagine", "My Kinda Love", "As Long As I Live", and "The Song Is You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & purple label pressing with AT etch.)

Gladys KnightBefore Me ... CD
Verve, 2006. Used ... $6.99
Gladys Knight pays tribute to a range of singers who came before her – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and others – all the while earning our respect for her new inflections of these classics! The style here is less "torch revival" than you'd expect – and in a surprising turn, Knight doesn't simply revisit the older modes of singing, but works here in a more progressive, more positive approach that's got a really bold sort of sound. Arrangements are by Billy Childs and John Clayton – and instrumentation is a mix of small combo backing and other numbers that feature the fuller Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra. Titles include "This Bitter Earth", "The Man I Love", "Come Sunday", "Stormy Weather", "I'll Be Seeing You", "But Not For Me", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me", and "God Bless The Child". Gregory PorterStill Rising ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
A really special sort of collection – one that features a fair bit of new material mixed in with some of the key cuts from the Blue Note years of singer Gregory Porter – an artist who started in jazz, but who's clearly had a huge impact on the world of soul music in recent years too! Porter's got a hell of a voice, and a majestic way of presenting his music – as you'll hear on the wide variety of work included here! The first half of the record features four new tracks, a few new arrangements and covers, and some older Blue Note material – titles that include "Dry Bones", "Illusion", "Real Good Hands", "Love Runs Deeper", "It's Probably Me", "No Love Dying", "1960 What", "Concorde", "If Love Is Overrated", "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad", and "Bad Girl Love". CD2 features duets – some freshly recorded, others that use studio work to add Porter's voice to now-passed singers – a lineup that includes songs with Jamie Cullum, Ella Fitzgerald, Moby, Julie London, Lalah Hathaway, Lizz Wright, Nat King Cole, Lisa Fischer, Dianne Reeves, and Renee Fleming. ✨✧ Rita ReysToday – Recorded In London ... CD
Philips (Japan), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". CD

Sarah VaughanTime In My Life ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Sarah Vaughn's looking pretty groovy on the cover of this album, and she's sounding pretty groovy too – thanks to some sweet 70s backings from Ernie Wilkins! The style isn't exactly funky, but it's got some fully soulful sounds, and some great electric moments too – modes that almost feel more like some of the best Kudu Records vocal sets from the time, instead of the usual Mainstream Records groove. Sarah really fits well in this sort of setting – stretching out into groovier territory than before with the same sense of change that Ella Fitzgerald or Marlena Shaw were bringing to their music at the time. Players include Jerome Richardson on saxes, Buddy Childers on trumpet, Benny Powell on trombone, Jimmy Cobb on percussion, and Earl Palmer on drums – and titles include "Inner City Blues", "Magical Connection", "Universal Prisoner", "Tomorrow City", "That's The Way I've Always Heard It", "Imagine", "On Thinking It Over", and "If Not For You". Cootie Williams & Wini BrownAround Midnight With Cootie Williams & Wini Brown ... LP
Jaro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A cool session from Cootie Williams – working here as a vocalist as much as a trumpeter, often in the company of female singer Wini Brown! The set has both singers working together on some hip duets, then stepping apart and working on their own for some tracks too – an approach that's a bit like the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald recordings over at Verve, but handled here with a bit more swing overall! Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, who knows how to make the record move nicely – and who also keeps things away from any too-hokey territory – and titles include "Around Midnight", "Bewitched", "That Old Feeling", "Goin Around", "Lover", and "Gone Again". (Jazz, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album
